It will be of interest to compare the statistics of the gas-producer plant at Aspen, Colorado (recorded by Mr. W. S. Morse in a paper read at the Montreal Meeting, February, 1893*), with those at the Marsac mill, Park City, Utah, where such a plant was first introduced by the writer in July, 1890. In both mills a Stetefeldt furnace is used for roasting; but the Marsac mill has the old-fidsdshioned revolving dryers, while at Aspen, shelf-dryers are at hand. At Aspen, separate Taylor-producers are provided for the Stetefeldt furnace and the shelf-dryers; at the Marsac mill one 7-foot producer supplies gas to both the furnace and the dryers. Hence, in the latter case, the quantity of coal consumed for each apparatus can only be estimated, based upon the relative consumption of wood before gas was introduced. According to Mr. Wilson's statement, the relative consumption of wood in the Stetefeldt furnace and the revolving dryers was as 3 to 2. In the year 1892 the Marsac mill put through the dryers and the Stetefeldt furnace the following quantities of ore and salt (approximate dry weights) : ore, 22,800 tons; salt, 2262 tons. There were consumed in the Taylor-producer 2,714 tons of Rock Springs coal. The 27th Regiment of Engineers was organized in the Army not long ago for special mining service at the front (or, we might even say, in advance of the front). In military engineering in warfare, the "sappers and miners" are one of the ancient branches of the corps of engineers; but in modern warfare the importance of this service has been greatly magnified. The 27th Engineers is a. special mining regiment, which is being recruited from mining engineers and miners from all districts of the country, already containing representatives from all the mining states between Arizona and Montana and from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast. Those of us who cannot go to the front should not-be content to tell the young fellows to go, and then forget them. We want the men of the 27th Engineers to know that they represent our industry and their industry; and that the industry is going to think about them and back them up. Expressing the above views, the Engineering and. Mining Journal instituted a fund for the aid of the 27th Engineers. It has already raised a considerable sum of money, and contributions are coming in fast; but there is no limit to what is wanted. This money is being spent in providing the regiment with athletic equipment, both outdoor and indoor; with games for the barracks; with cigarettes and smoking tobacco; with contributions to the funds of the several companies that the men raise among themselves. It is contemplated, moreover, that there will be need to extend aid and comfort to some of the families whom the men have left behind. Contributions of books, sweaters and other knitted articles are also being received.

ARTHUR PHILLIPS,* Bridgeport, Conn. (written discussion?).-It is to, be regretted that the very valuable paper by Messrs. Bassett and Davis did not appear in the early war period. The data presented would have been of inestimable service to inspectors, of cartridge brass who, admittedly, had little or no knowledge regarding the relation of grain size to temperature of anneal, and no real appreciation of, the significance of the Brinell hardness test. The paper is of considerable interest to, metallurgists also. WALTER R. HIBBARD, ? Bridgeport. Conn. (written discussion§).-The writer has carefully studied Messrs. Bassett and Davis's paper with considerable interest, inasmuch as our laboratory has tested cartridge brass by means of a Brinell machine. In March, 1917, at the suggestion of the Technical Department of the American Brass Co., we started a comparison of grain-size measurements and Brinell hardness of-cartridge brass with a gage of 0.1 in. or greater. This was continued until March, 1918, when we adopted the Brinell hardness test as standard for brass 0.1 in. gage or greater, and discontinued grain-size measurements upon this metal. The data collected during the test showed that the Brinell hardness indicated more accurately how the metal acted in actual working operations. It was also more reliable because two manipulators check themselves closer by the Brinell test than by the grain-size measurements. It also consumed less time in making the tests. Alfred V. de Forest, formerly assistant research engineer of our laboratories, has described the apparatus and some of the checking results in a paper read June, 1918, before the American Society for Testing Materials.1 The writer hopes that a more satisfactory. method for testing cartridge brass and gilding in gages thinner than 0.1 in. may be devised than the present method of grain-size measurements.

The general curtailment of activities, so marked in 1931, was continued and intensified in 1932 and although production was maintained at approximately the level of the previous year, 1932 was chiefly characterized by the virtual cessation of drilling in many of the proven fields, a further decline in wildcatting activities, particularly in the Maracaibo Basin, and the relinquishment of large blocks of unfavorably located acreage. A total of only 60 wells was completed during the year of which six were wildcats, while at the same time concessions aggregating approximately. 3,222,000 acres were renounced and reverted to the National Government. The maintenance of production at the previously established level was made possible through the large potential built up by drilling in previous years and by a gradual increase in pumping and gas-lift installations. Towards the end of the year there was a slight but perceptible tendency towards increased drilling in certain of the proven fields. Total production for the year came to 118,076,000 as compared to 118,418,000 bbl. for 1931, while exports amounted to 114,758,000 as against 116,683,000 bbl. in 1931. Table 1 shows production and exports and the average rate per day for the first half of 1932 as compared to the second half. The Nicola Valley coal-field is small, but it seems likely to become important because of its commanding position in a rich region that is developing rapidly. Bituminous coking-coal in workable quantity has not been found at any other point between the Crow's Nest Pass region, about 400 miles to the east, and Vancouver island, 250 miles westward. The Canadian Pacific railway reached the Nicola valley two years ago ; two other lines, the Canadian Northern and the Great Northern, are building towards the valley. The vast region between the Rocky mountains and the Pacific coast, extending northward for several hundred miles from the international boundary, which has been the scene of extensive mining- and smelting-operations for many years, is filling up with settlers, who are attracted by the wealth of minerals and timber, the rich soil of the valleys, and the fine climate. The Nicola river, flowing westward through the valley of that name in the Yale district, discharges into the Thompson river, which is the eastern branch of the Fraser. The transcontinental line of the Canadian Pacific railway crosses the mouth of the Nicola river at Spence's bridge, 178 miles from Vancouver. From Spence's bridge the Nicola branch line ascends the valley for 40 miles to Merritt, the coal-center, and continues 7 miles farther to the town of Nicola. Thus the haul from the mines at an elevatioiz of 2,000 ft. to salt water is 218 miles down river-grades. The Nicola branch will be continued about 150 miles farther eastward to Penticton, where it will connect with an extension of the line through the rich Kootenay and Boundary districts. The Canadian government has granted a subsidy of $6,000 per mile, to which the provincial government is planning to add $5,000 per mile, to assist in the construction of the Nicola extension. A method is proposed for the preliminary design of coal mine openings and pillars using existing design formulas. The suggested method incorporates geophysical and core logging techniques, as well as the structural properties of the rock. Some of the existing design equations have been simplified and are included. Pink Tennessee Marble was tested for wedge bit penetration characteristics at static and dynamic (10 - 250 ft/sec) loading rates. No significant differences were found within the dynamic range as far as the energy required to remove a unit crater volume and the force used to cause a certain penetration. Under static loading, however, both the energy and the force required were significantly lower. Tests run on bits of varying width indicated that as the wedge bit narrowed to an almost conical shape, the energy used per unit crater volume became considerably lower.

The Grand Forks Energy Research Center (GFERC) and Commonwealth Edison of Chicago jointly conducted tests in which 400 tons of subbituminous and lignite coals were dried in a commercial scale dryer, oil sprayed and cooled, then shipped from Pekin, Ill., to Grand Forks, N.D., and stockpiled. Cars containing raw coal and dried coal which had not been sprayed, were also transported for comparative purposes. During transit, observations were made of changes in the coals' moisture content, dust losses, and temperature.

Electrochemical measurements were made wing chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite electrodes in aqueous solution containing a xanthute collector and ground ore mineral particles. The purpose was to investigate the electrochemical reactivity of ozone with respect to dissolved xanthute, surface adsorbed xanthute, and the sulfide mineral itself. Electro-chemical evidence for the removal of xanthate coatings from chulcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and platinum surfaces by ozone is presented. The oxidizing power of ozone is compared with that of oxygen and other common oxidizing agents to portray the superiority of ozone as an oxidant.

Results of a long-term program of electrical parameter measurement in underground coal mine working sections, performed by The Pennsylvania State University under US Bureau of Mines (USBM) sponsorship, are utilized as the basis for an analysis of the electrical energy requirements during operation. A model section is hypothesized, developed from the average or most representative characteristics as determined from tabulations of the measurements. Performance factors of the model section's machine complement are then analyzed, particularly with regard to the energy required per ton of raw coal cut and delivered from the section. Results are given in kilowatt -hours per ton.

Geotechnical techniques to evaluate conditions in underground metalliferous mines change through a mine's development from prefeasibility to remnant mining. The objectives of this paper are to determine the geotechnical requirements of typical underground metalliferous mining projects, to determine any shortfalls in conventional geotechnical techniques in satisfying these requirements, and to determine the costs of such investigations in proportion to the project expenditure. Finally, areas for future research and development are discussed. A group of over one hundred case history studies are examined to generate data on typical mining problems. The case studies include projects at most Australian underground metalliferous mining operations supplemented with case studies in Canada, Africa, Asia and Europe.
