As air-pollution regulations become increasingly more stringent, increased significance is being placed on the amount of sulfur present in coals used for steam generation. These regulations are aimed at minimizing the pollution of the atmosphere with noxious gases such as the sulfur oxides that are formed and emitted when coal is burned. Two meet these future requirements, a definite need exists to reduce the sulfur content of some of the coals used for steam generation. Reducing pyritic sulfur involves liberating the pyrite from the coal and then removing it. The specific gravity of pyrite is high (5.0) compared to that of coal (about 1.2, mineral-free), and standard coal-washing devices, such as wet concentrating tables, will efficiently remove pyrite particles larger than about 100 mesh. Particles below this size will be entrained in the table water and will be carried into the clean coal product. Techniques such as froth flotation are of little benefit for pyrite reduction because the flotation characteristics of pyrite are similar to those of coal.

Pegasus' Gold Ltd. operates two gold/silver heap leaching operations in the Little Rockies area of Montana. The Little Rockies has produced gold from underground operations on an intermittent basis from the 1880's to the early 1950's and from the open-pits on a continuous basis since 1979. Run-of-the-mine ore is drilled, blasted, sorted, loaded and hauled. The waste is dumped and compacted into 30 meter (100 foot) fills to be used for future leach pads. The leach pads have a central drain system and the impermeable membrane is constructed of bentonite and 30 mil PVC. The plants which have beenexpanded to 4900 Ipm (1300 gpm) capacity use the Merrill-Crowe process for gold and silver recovery. 4600 liters (1200 gpm) of the 9500 Ipm (2500 gpm) spray capacity is recycled through the old leach pads for upgrading before being processed. The gold/silver precipitate is smelted and the resultant dore' is shipped to a buyerhefiner. 1983 projected production is 2,177 kg (70,000 02s) of gold at a cost of less than $10/gm.

A plan which has just been approved by President Wilson, by, the Secretary of the Navy, and the Naval Consulting Board, provides for the active cooperation of the Associated Advertising Clubs of the World with the 30,000 engineers who will soon undertake the task of making a card index survey of American industry, so that it may be prepared for national defense, if need comes. Herbert S. Houston, President of the Associated Clubs of the World comments on the plan. "Through the great power of advertising we expect-to arouse manufacturers, workingmen, businessmen, in fact the whole country, to the vital need of making industry the basic line of defense so that, if necessity arises, it can supply munitions quickly and abundantly. "This is not a war measure, but a peace measure. The militarist will support it and so will the pacifist, as well as the great body of Americans in between. So the slogan `national defense and international peace, has been adopted believing that the two causes will be best served by linking them together. "While the primary thing, of course, is service to the country, it is manifest that this work of the engineers will be of the greatest service to industry in times of peace. If industry is mobilized for defense, it will be placed on a basis of efficiency to meet the keen competition that will surely follow the present war." Howard E. Coffin, one of the leaders of the American automobile industry, in outlining the far-reaching plans of his committee, the Committee of Industrial Preparedness of the Naval Consulting Board, said: "At the outset I wish to emphasize the absolutely non-partisan nature of this work. I am not even familiar with the political affiliations of the great majority of the members of the Board or of my committee. In setting out to, mobilize the industrial resources of the United States, we are concerned only with the benefit to the nation, and to that end we have called into being an organization made up of the best technical and business brains of the country, and that organization will work along business lines with strictly business methods. I think it reasonable to say that this is a movement perhaps unique in the history of national governments, and one geared up to the highest standards of twentieth century efficiency. "It is vitally necessary that American industry be made aware of the part it must play in the national defense. Our whole conception of warfare has been changed almost overnight. Our military heads at Washington are largely, of course, graduates of the very best technical schools, have been taught the profession of fighting, and are masters of that profession. As members of the Naval Consulting Board, we are unable to tell these men how to do their work. But while these departmental heads have lived with military problems all their adult years, we on the other hand have slept and eaten and lived with the industrial problems of the country. The two questions are wholly distinct, and the masters of one cannot possibly be the masters of the other. We are confronted then with the necessity of interlocking these two vast elements of our national life into a great working organization for the national defense. It is that which we are about to do.

INTRODUCTION One cannot discuss the subject of "Raising Capital in the 1990s" without having a crystal ball and a reliable fortune teller. This discusses "Raising Capital for the 1990sW, which is what Metal1 Mining Corporation did in 1987. We raised (3166 million in an IPO (initial public offering) that was originally planned for only some (375 million. Why did we raise this money? How did we do it, and why was this IPO so successful? The answer to the first question requires a description of the promoter and principal shareholder of Metal1 Mining Corporation, Metallgesellschaft AG. This West Germany company was founded over 100 years ago in Frankfurt as a trading house for non-ferrous metals. It has developed into one of the world's leading firms in the non-ferrous metals industry. The company's worldwide activities in all areas of that business include mining, smelting and refining, the trading of ore, base and precious metals, the production of semi-fabricated and finished metal products, and the provision of engineering, construction and transportation services. Metallgesellschaft AG has also diversified into many other areas, the most significant of which are manufacturing, the production of chemicals, the development and application of technical and chemical processes, the planning and construction of industrial plants, and activities associated with finance, insurance, shipping and freight forwarding, and the provision of barter and countertrade services. The company maintains a network of more than 100 offices around the world; it employs some 25,000 people in its worldwide activities. METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG Figure 1 depicts an overview of Metallgesellschaft AG before and at the time the initial public offering of Metall Mining Corporation's shares took place. It shows that mining was far from the centre of Metallgesellschaft's activities. Therefore, it could not expect to receive an extraordinary amount of board attention. Thus, mining investments not only had to compare well with other mining opportunities, but were in fierce competition with projects from other divisions. In addition, mining was sub-divided into two separate departments -- domestic and international. These two departments had different management styles and diverging interests which resulted in a minimum co-operation between them. The domestic mining department was primarily interested in the survival of the local mines. These mines were characterized by rising operating costs and declining ore grades. It took a special commitment and continued ingenuity to develop and adjust to local conditions, and modern mining and processing technology, in order to remain competitive, or at least survive within the international mining industry. Vermiculite is the name used for those micaceous minerals with a ferromagnesian aluminum silicate composition and the unique property of exfoliating to a low density material when heated. Commercially, the exfoliated products are also called vermiculite, or more exactly, expanded vermiculite. In its exfoliated state, vermiculite serves many markets, chief among them construction, agriculture, horticulture, and general industry. Composition and Properties Vermiculite, in a natural state, has the characteristic mica habit, splits readily into thin laminae, flexible but inelastic. In a mineralogical sense, vermiculite is a hydrated silicate with no exact chemical composition. The structural formula for a macroscopic, trioctahedral vermiculite may be written: [ ] The structure of vermiculite is basically that of a talc, and it could be regarded as a trioctahedral member of the smectite group. Macroscopically, vermiculite displays the prominent monoclinic crystal faces that are commonly marked by lines at 60° and 120°. Hardness varies from 1.5 to 2.8 or more; specific gravities are between 2.1 and 2.8; color is amber, bronze, brown, dark green, or black. When heated quickly to an elevated tempera¬ture, vermiculite expands by exfoliating at right angles to the cleavage, into wormlike pieces (the name vermiculite is derived from the Latin `vermiculare,' to breed worms). This characteristic of expansion, the basis for commercial use of the mineral, is the result of the mechanical separation of the layers by the rapid conversion of contained water to steam. The increase in bulk volume of commercial grades is 8 to 12 times, but individual flakes may expand as much as 30 times. All expansion occurs at right angles to the basal cleavage. Vermiculite may also be expanded by a number of chemical processes such as soaking in hydrogen peroxide, weak acids, and other electrolytes. There is a color change during expansion that is dependent upon the composition of the vermiculite and furnace atmospheres. Heating in an oxidizing atmosphere produces dull gray colors. The iron is generally not oxidized during chemical expansion. The exfoliation of the vermiculite crystal results in large pores being formed between groups of platelets. Thus exfoliation can make available a large increase in void volume without significantly changing the surface area of the platelets. This characteristic is important in the chemical carrier applications of vermiculite. Although there has been much research on the chemical and structural composition of vermiculite, an exact formula and composition cannot be described. This is to be expected since vermiculite derives from a number of different mineral sources. As has been proposed, vermiculite is not a single mineral species, but families of related minerals. Additionally, commercial interest in the end product has resulted in the name vermiculite being applied to the very voluminous, bloated products from calcination of baueritized (bleached) phlogopite. This has also resulted in many names for the specific vermiculite found in a particular deposit. All of this difficulty arises from the nature of its crystal chemistry. Consequently, vermiculite is now thought of as several related variable mineral series rather than a group of related species. The vermiculites have a common silica tetrahedral sheet structure with separating ions. It is now generally agreed that vermiculites must also be regarded as true clay minerals. Glass beads have been surface treated with Dri-film to render them oil wet by n-octane to varying degrees, and capillary desaturation curves have been determined by the restored state method. The desaturation curves show a regularity of increasing displacement pressures as the oil wetness increases. This has been used to compute apparent contact angles between n-octane and water on glass. The family of desaturation curves also shows a regular crossover, such that the residual wetting liquid saturation values are in reverse order to the displacement pressures. A semi-logarithmic variation is shown between the apparent contact angle and the residual saturation. The desaturation data are interpreted to mean that the wetting liquid ceases to be a continuous phase within individual pores before the capillary pressure can be raised sufficiently to force out the wetting phase completely. The saturation of wetting liquid at which this break in liquid continuity occurs is higher as the oil wetness decreases. INTRODUCTION The petroleum industry has for some time been using measurements of capillary pressures on porous media for research correlations and engineering calculations. It has been generally recognized that the capillary desaturation curve reflects the character and arrangement of the pores within the media and the distribution of fluids within the pores. Methods have been proposed for computing pore size distributions, tortuosity factors. and relative permeabilities from capillary desaturation data.' There is little doubt that the interactions between porous rocks and their contained fluids resulting from surface forces play a dominant role in determining the magnitude and direction of capillary pressure measurements. There have been attempts to introduce as variables two quantities — inter-facial tension and contact angle — generally used to char- acterize surface forces, but in spile of the wide interest in these quantities as important variables, few definite conclusions have been drawn concerning their qualitative or quantitative significance. INTERFACIAL TENSION The interfacial tension appears in a capillary pressure function given by Leverett for correlating capillary desaturation type curves. Use of the interfacial tension in this function seems to be justified by other experiments reported. Apparently, interfacial tensions have little bearing on wetting phase residual by desaturation. CONTACT ANGLE The contact angle was utilized as a variable by Bartell and co-workers"." in tests on displacement pressures, later recognized as the initial point of capillary desaturation. Although Leverett did not include contact angle in his original formulation of the capillary pressure function, later workers suggested its addition. Few reports are available to show variation of residual liquid with contact angle as a result of capillary desaturation.' The problems attendant to measuring contact angle within a porous medium are great. As a consequence of the lack of a concrete approach to a measurement. the workers in this area of research have adopted the general expression of "wettability" to indicate the relative position of two liquids saturating a porous body. It has been shown that gross measurements on porous systems, including capillary desatura-tions, are sensitive to wettability. Attempts at giving a scale to wettability in terms of contact angle through capillary desaturation curves have been made and these apparently are steps in the right direction. In these attempts presence of many other variables precludes attainment of exactness. Also, as a result of other variables, it has been impossible to correlate changes in apparent contact angle with changes in other physical measurements of the systems in question. The present work is an attempt to eliminate as many variables as possible in measuring capillary desaturations resulting from changes in contact angle within a porous medium.

ALL strata not yielding oil or gas in commercial quantities or a corresponding amount of water may be called dry in a wide sense. In petroleum geology,, however, we may exclude all sands of too low or fin porosity to yield gaseous or fluid contents to the hole drilled in the sand before any original pressure that its contents may be under is disturbed. Most rocks are of this class and they are not reservoirs in our definition; their "dryness" is wholly a matter of course. What are the contents of the pores or what is the exact porosity of such rocks is of almost no concern to us, for economically they are "dry." What does interest us is the content of a rock having sufficient porosity and the pores of sufficient size to yield oil or gas in commercial quantities, if they were present under original pressure: Dryness of these reservoirs is a matter of supreme practical importance. Three views current as to such dryness seem, to me, to apply in a few cases only. It is the purpose of this paper to give reasons for this position and for believing that, in ordinary sedimentary rocks, there is only rarely a reservoir of competent porosity and undisturbed pressure that is dry in the sense of not yielding water, oil, or gas when first penetrated. 1. Gardner1 writes of some Kentucky sands, "There has never been present any salt water or other water in the sand." Absence of water cannot demonstrate this position. It is necessary to show that the rocks were not laid down in water, but in air, and that they became so enclosed, while still above the water-table of the, ground water, that water has not been able to enter since. Most of these sands, and certainly the productive limestones, were deposited in water; and such sands as have been commercially productive show no reason for believing that the overlying shale or limestone was not laid down progressively from one direction and in water that would have flooded it. No adequate explanation has been offered for this hypothesis, which is so inherently improbable.

Slag control is adjustment of the composition of the slag, especially with respect to the FeO content. The theoretical method of slag control would be to charge a mixture of pig iron and scrap of given composition into the furnace, to melt always at the same carbon, and, after a uniform ore addition, to tap with a constant slag composition. Such conditions are not even approximated. Both scrap and pig iron are of variable, and, in many cases, unknown composition. The charge is oxidized to a variable extent during melting. The result is that the FeO content of the slag, and consequently of the metal at tap, varies over a wide range. In order to make a nearly uniform product, this variation must be compensated for in some way. One way is to adapt the ladle deoxidation to the requirements of the metal. The other is to control the slag. In a general sense slag control may be considered as a method of compensating for variations in the composition of the charge and in oxidation during melting. The method of slag control for low-carbon steel was developed by Dr. Herty at our Butler plant3. Use of this method enables the furnace operator to tap heats at a more nearly constant FeO content and, therefore, to use a more nearly uniform deoxidation practice. The desired FeO and the accompanying deoxidation will depend on the application of the product. This statement implies that 0.10 carbon steel finished with a 15 FeO slag may be essentially different from a 0.10 carbon steel finished with a 30 FeO slag. In making low-carbon steel, the desired carbon places a lower limit on the FeO content of the slag, because the slag must be sufficiently oxidizing for proper carbon elimination. With this degree of oxidation, the phosphorus specification is met without difficulty, and there is little danger of phosphorus reversion. Thus a limiting factor in high-carbon heats is of slight importance in low-carbon heats. For heats of 0.05 to 0.07 per cent carbon, the FeO content of the slag may be controlled at

THE Morning mine is operated through one main working adit, known as No. 6 or 800 tunnel level. At a distance of 10,000 ft. underground from the portal is the vertical four-compartment, main working shaft, which extends to the 3050 level, a distance of 2250 ft. below the collar, or 800 level. Shaft-stations are cut and levels opened every 200 ft. of depth and the ore is stoped to the next level above. The vein is nearly vertical and the ore is usually fairly massive and brittle. Both walls are soft and slabby and much difficulty is therefore experienced in holding them. Stopes are usually carried up in short sections, approximately 200 ft. in length, that are mined as rapidly as possible in order to avoid a too great replacement or repair of stope timbers. The four-compartment vertical shaft, 110 ft. in the footwall of the vein, is the sole medium of outlet for all ore mined below the adit level. Two compartments of this shaft are used exclusively for hoisting ore, except at the time of changing shifts, when one compartment is used to handle some of the men and timber. The third compartment is equipped for handling men, tim-ber and all general supplies and is operated by a Nord-berg 300-hp. electric hoist. This hoist has a lifting ca-pacity of 14,000 lb. with an average rope speed of 800 ft. per minute. The fourth compartment is used solely as a manway and pipeway.

Ernest R.. WOAKES, Cana, Colombia: The allusion in this paper, under the heading " Mining on the Isthmus," to the Espiritu Santo mine at Cana is neither according to fact nor worthy of the most interesting and able summary of the mining districts of Colombia contained in the remainder of the paper. The following remark is certainly open to contention: "The most widely-known mine of this department is the Espiritu Santo, at Cana, a quartz-mine opened up in 1680 and abandoned in 1727 on account of the attacks of the Cana Indians. This mine undoubtedly produced great quantities of gold, although many of the accounts given of its ancient richness are probably exaggerated. In 1884 it was rediscovered and reopened by the Darien Gold Mining Company, and under the able management of Mr. Thomas H. Leggett, now prominent in South African mining circles, produced for a time successful results ; but later the veins became pockety and the output unsatisfactory." The mine here referred to, though situated at Cana, was not the Espiritu Santo mine, and was closed down in 1892. Mr. Leggett, however, ran ten stamps on the ore from it for some two or three months in the year 1890, when he left Colombia. The Espiritu Santo mine was not reopened by the Darien Gold Mining Company until the year 1894. For the last three years the ore from the old Spanish workings of this mine has been yielding in the mill 1 ounce to the ton, and has served to keep the mine going whilst extensive development-works have been

The clay-resources of Colorado are but little known, for the reason that little has been published concerning them, and also on account of the hitherto small demand for clay products in the Rocky Mountain region. At the present day the wares manufactured from clay which are used in Colorado include common and pressed brick, terracotta, sewer-pipe, pottery and refractory articles. Most of these are brought from a considerable distance; but with an increasing demand for such goods in the West and a better knowledge of the available materials, there should be considerable expansion in the clay-working industry of Colorado in the future. The notes here presented are an abstract of those collected by the writer in October, 1896, in a reconnaissance of the clay-bearing formations of Colorado. Clay-bearing Formations. We may roughly divide the clay-bearing formations of Colorado into three groups : 1. Loess and alluvial deposits. 2. Jura-Trias and Cretaceous clays. 3. Tertiary clays. . The loess forms an extensive deposit of large area, though not very thick, extending from north to south across the State, and eastward from the foot-hills. It is generally a very sandy clay, with little plasticity, and is underlain by a gravelly stratum, which determines the workable depth. Clay similar to the loess is found underlying the river terraces in many of the broader valleys, such as those of the Arkansas, Grand River, etc. The Mesozoic formations extend along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains, and also occur in some of the deeper valleys tributary to the foot-hill belt. (communication to the Secretary): It has always appeared to me that each coalseam has its peculiar character or habit, due to the conditions of its formation, by virtue of which it is either persistent or variable in its section over extended areas. One seam will hold its thickness, chemical character, number and position of partings, beds of slate, etc., over a large area, while another will be found to vary in some of these characteristics every few feet. As the position of the outcrop is an accident of the topography, depending on folding and erosion which have taken place since the bed was formed, no one opening in the outcrop, or, in fact, anywhere else, can supply reliable evidence as to the general character of the seam. To determine the character of an untried seam, a number of sections are necessary from widely separated points, in order to show such variations as may exist. IN the utilization of natural resources owner, operator, and consumer should share the attendant benefits. Development needs to be planned under terms recognizing fully the interests of all concerned, for any undue advantage given to any one of these participants is apt to involve even greater and disproportionate injury to one or both of the others. For this reason it is well to preface any consideration of needed reforms in legislation affecting the disposition of public land with a survey of certain fundamental principles that determine the general conditions of all land transfers preliminary to development, utilization, and production. The disposition of any undeveloped natural resource, whether timber, oil, coal, or water power, as a transaction to which hand owner and prospective developer are parties, must be based in theory upon a division of expected returns. Whatever the terms of such disposition, neither party can reasonably ask for anything other than an equitable division of the returns. Under this analysis three and only three questions need to be discussed ; namely, what are those profits, how is this division to be accomplished, and what is the equitable basis of division ? The answer to the third question should probably be found by applying to the problem the principles of theoretical sociology, and' the question need not be mentioned further at this time, inasmuch as it does not involve the practical considerations to be kept in mind in connection with the other questions, which are concerned with only the measure of returns and their division. That is to say, whether the land owner's equity is to be stated as 95 per cent. or as 5 per cent. of the profits attending the development of the particular resource, no change would be necessary in the method to be adopted of arriving at the closest approximation of the prospective total profit.

DURING the last few years, there has been a constant tendency toward increasingly high temperatures in many lines of industry. The necessity for increased production of coke gave a 16-hr. coking period where we used to have 24 or even 30-hr. periods. Mechanical stokers have increased the temperatures in boiler furnaces. The use of a chain-grate stoker with coke-breeze fuel necessitates a low arch in the furnace and temperatures run much higher than firebrick were formerly called upon to stand. These higher temperatures have necessitated more rigid tests and the separation of even high-grade firebrick into separate classes. More severe tests mean higher temperatures and closer control, and this, in turn, means better pyrometer tubes. Platinum couples do not have a very long life when used at temperatures exceeding, say, 1200° C., but the proper selection of a high-grade brick to be used in a-boiler setting will save the cost of several couples; and with freight rates continually increasing it becomes increasingly important to know where brick may be bought, nearest the job, that will prove satisfactory. Couples that will stand continuous use at higher temperatures, of tungsten, molybdenum, or other metal, will doubtless be forthcoming as soon as the need becomes sufficiently urgent. There are on the market several tubes that are entirely satisfactory for temperatures up to 1300° C., if properly protected from heat shock. The Semet-Solvay Co. makes a practice, however, of testing silica and clay firebricks at 1450° C. for 72 hr., and so far we have been unable to find a tube that- is entirely satisfactory for this purpose. A graphic record of the temperature during the entire test is extremely desirable and hence we have been trying out anything that gave promise of success. Several years ago we were using insulating tubes, made purely for electrical work, of vitrified porcelain. These tubes stood up under any temperature we were able to reach and were apparently impervious to gases. When this stock gave out, due to mechanical breakage, we tried other insulation tubes only to have them melt down like glass. THE pyrites used in making sulfuric acid in the United States have been largely imported from Spain and Canada, the Spanish imports amounting to nearly 1,000,000 tons per annum in the pre-war period. The greatly increased use of sulfuric acid and the cutting off of these Spanish imports, incident to war conditions, brought about a threatened shortage of sulfur supplies during the war period. The bituminous-coal mines of certain districts have, for many years, furnished a small tonnage of pyrite in the form of coal brasses. A mechanical concentrator at Danville, Ill., for a number of years, has been treating hand-picked lump pyrite and coal from the picking belt and from the mines and a small plant near Gillespie, Ill., for a few months has been recovering pyrite from washery refuse. Many mines throughout Illinois, Indiana, Western Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania have shipped an occasional car of the hand-cleaned lump pyrite. Only a very small percentage of the available pyrite has been recovered in this way, however, as usually the miners throw such lumps into the gob with slate and other impurities. It has been estimated that the western Indiana coal field could furnish more than 100,000 tons of pyrite per annum. The present production is very small. The possibility of furnishing the domestic trade with pyrites recovered as a byproduct from coal-mining operations appears attractive but there are certain features difficult to overcome. Pyrite, to be used in acid making, must meet with certain requirements as to size and purity. Lump ore for grate burners should be under 3 in. (7.6 cm.) and over 1 in. (2.5 cm.) in diameter. Fines for use in mecnanical roasters should be under quarter mesh. The material should be high in sulfur, free from arsenic and phosphorus, and as low in carbon as possible. The pyrite obtained from coal can be made to meet all the above requirements, but it is difficult to remove all the carbon. The pyrite in coal occurs as bands and nodules of varying thickness and size and of comparative purity, but mixed with this is more or less web sulfur. RECENTLY a comprehensive investigation of the various sigma binary alloys was published by Duwez and Baen.1 It was shown that the following conditions are necessary for the formation of the sigma phase: (1) the difference in atomic diameters of the two alloying metals must not be more than about 8 pct; (2) of the two elements which form sigma, one must exhibit a body-centered cubic structure while the second metal must be face-centered cubic, at least in one of its allotropic forms. In addition, a tetragonal unit cell was proposed and powder patterns of six sigma phases were indexed for d spacings greater than 1.640 kx. Since the indexing, based on tetragonal symmetry, led to only fair agreement, the possibility of sigma being orthorhombic was investigated. Various methods for indexing orthorhombic powder patterns are de- scribed in the literature.' The method used in this investigation was a graphical examination of the differences in values of sin' 9 for the adjacent lines of the powder diffraction pattern. This method led to a complete indexing of the Cr-Co (60-40) pattern. Because of the strong similarity between the various sigma alloys, it was then possible to assign indexes to the patterns of Fe-Cr (50-50), Fe-Cr-Mo (30-30-40), Fe-V (50-50), Co-V (50-50), and Ni-V (50-50). The values of sin' 9 and indexes of the six sigma alloys, together with visually estimated intensities, are presented in table 1. In general, the similitude between the six patterns is quite good. For spacings greater than 1.75 kx a few differences are noticeable. In the Ni-V pattern, no (320) exists and the two strong lines (030) and (031) are separated by only two lines of lower intensity, unlike any of the other sigma patterns. However, very little is known about the Ni-V phase diagram and it is possible that the equal atomic percentage composition in this system lies in a two-phase region. The Alta and St. Louis mines of the Alta Mines, Inc., produce a somewhat oxidized ore with a talc gangue that presents quite a problem in milling. For several years the mill recoveries were relatively low and there seemed to be no cure for this condition even with increasing the various collecting agents and frothers to two or three times of what they should be. The usual alibi of "oxidized ore" was given as the reason for these results and the matter stood there for some time until these investigations were started. Flowsheet As a brief outline of the flowsheet the ore is crushed to minus I in. in a Telsmith jaw crusher and then fed to a 64½ Marcy grate mill. The resulting product from the grate mill is passed over a trommel where the coarse particles (plus 7 mesh) are returned to the grinding circuit through the classifier. The under 7-mesh pulp is passed over two Denver mineral jigs where a high grade concentrate is produced, thence over two Wilfley tables where a table concentrate is produced and about 80 pct of the oxide lead recovered. The tailings from these tables are pumped back to the classifier and after classification the 30 pct pulp density product, which overflows the lip, is passed into a series of 10 Denver economy flotation cells where a lead-copper concentrate is produced. Three products are made and shipped to the smelter termed jig, table and float concentrates. Results with various Reagents In March of this year work was started on the metallurgical problems of the mill and, as is shown in Table I, the results obtained were not too efficient. Tests were run with various reagent combinations that were recommended for ores of this nature but there was no appreciable effect on the recoveries. The grades of the flotation concentrates were reduced by the insoluble picked up and retained by these more powerful collectors and frothers. Results with "Metso" In past work on ores of this type the use of "Metso" had improved gold and lead recoveries, but no effect on the silver and copper recoveries had been noted. To

When coal is deposited on the decks of pneumatic tables, all fine particles clinging to the larger pieces are blown free by the air. Inasmuch as the air retains an appreciable residual velocity after passing through the bed of coal, it is capable of suspending particles of goodly size. This velocity is dissipated gradually and, unless confined, can readily extend beyond the limits of the plant. Today the ideal in the design and operation of pneumatic cleaning plants is not that they be no dustier than the ordinary tipple, but rather that they be as clean as an office or shop. This degree of perfection may not yet have been attained in any commercial plant, but it is not impossible of achievement. Not until recently has the recirculation principle been applied to pneumatic separating plants. In the writer's estimation, it has not yet been proved entirely satisfactory in commercial installations. A serious obstacle lies in the fact that it is practically impossible to provide a truly closed circuit. The air circuits must be interrupted at certain points, if only for the introduction of raw material and for the recovery of the finished product. It is feasible to prevent the escape of polluted air at these points, but this can scarcely be accomplished without admitting additional air into the circuit. These additions of air are cumulative, which necessitates means for emitting to the atmosphere the excess while still carrying its objectionable burden, if provisions are not made for conditioning. If it must be provided at all, conditioning is frequently simpler and more economical if applied to the entire volume of air involved. This procedure eliminates the extra initial cost and operating expense of the closed system. Crane Cheek Experiments The first noteworthy commercial installation of pneumatic equipment was made in 1922, at the Crane Creek plant of the American Coal Co. of Allegheny County, at McComas, W. Va. Six tables for cleaning coal between the limits of and 3 in. comprised the initial installation. Dust was collected by hoods connected by a system of ducts to exhauster fans. In this installation the unit dust burden was small, owing to the removal of fines from the feed by vibrating screens.

EVERY dry thing that burns easily and multiplies or maintains fire by its own intrinsic nature can be put into an incendiary composition and various effects are produced. Some of these things are mineral combinations, like sulphur or its oil; some others, [163v] hot, dry, and subtle substances, like saltpeter; and some are. unctuous things, like fats and oils of any kind; while some serve because of dryness, like pith and wood. Some of these things are natural and some artificial But now I set aside the search for these differences in their composition. This is what I have found among all the ancient and modern things that I have been able to seek, and first, back in the time of Alexander the Great. Marcus Graecus, who was perhaps the inventor or a great experimenter and practicer of such things, writes of many of them. I have chosen some among these, and one* is this: In order to make it, he took Grecian pitch, alchitran, live sulphur, tartar, sarcocolla, niter, and petroleum oil, one part of each, and, in addition, a double amount of quicklime. He mixed it all with oil of egg yolks. Having put it in a well-covered and closed vessel of glass or glazed earthenware under warm manure, he left it for a month. Then, having liquefied it over a slow fire, always keeping the vessel well closed, he finally put this liquor in hollow sticks, in little pots, or in vessels expressly made, all with a little fuse fitted in the middle. If I should have to do this, I would say that a little gunpowder should be put in, which should give beginning to the fire so that it would ignite more easily. I have also found that another fire is made. For this sulphur is taken, or oil of sulphur if it is possible to obtain, petroleum oil or some rock oil, juniper oil, very well-refined saltpeter, and for one part of each of these five parts of asphalt; in addition, take goose or duck fat, pure black pitch, varnish, pulverized dove's dung, and enough aqua vitae to cover all the aforesaid things..
