Ground control studies are being conducted in conjunction with several longwall/shortwall demonstration projects. Geologic, support performance, and strata behavior are being documented on these projects. A hypothesis is presented for the prediction of support requirements.

THE treatment of Balbach-Thum slimes at Copper Cliff by the Ontario Refining. Co. is of interest because it differs considerably from methods usually employed for the recovery of fine gold from parting-plant slimes. Owing to the comparatively high percentages of pal-ladium and platinum, wet methods are used to remove the greater proportion f these metals before electrolytic refining in the Wohlwill cells. THE PLANT The platinum-metals department, Wohlwill room, and gold-melting room extend along the north side f the silver refinery and are separated from the parting plant by a glass partition (Figs. 1 and 2). The platinum-metals department resembles a laboratory built on a large scale, with the various pieces of equipment laid out on terraces to facilitate handling. Because of the corrosive nature of the solutions, chemical stoneware is used throughout. Elevation of acids is accom-plished by means of Mariotte bottles. On the top level are three steam-jacketed stoneware kettles of 50-gal. capacity, also a packed tower. One kettle is used for digesting the slimes while the remaining kettles are used for precipitating the gold. The dissolver is equipped with a treated concrete hood, which is connected to the flue system. Gases are drawn off through the packed tower by means of a 6-in. stoneware exhaust fan. A 15 per cent solution of sodium carbonate is continually circulated through the tower. On the intermediate level are two suction filters, one for removing silver chloride and the other for the gold sand. The filter medium consists of an asbestos pad covered with a filter paper on which is a layer of twill.

The year 1926 has seen few radical changes or developments in methods of drilling and handling oil wells, but it has been a year of steady progress and development in deep drilling and production methods. Probably the outstanding development of the year was recognition by the directors of the American Petroleum Institute of the importance of natural gas in the production of oil, and the Institute directors' resolutions in December, 1926, regarding regulation of gas production with oil by state legislation. This matter is extremely important and will receive the attention of the industry in 1927. Advances in Drilling Equipment The history of the progress of deep well drilling is the solution of problems as they have confronted the operator. As the prospects for deeper production have become apparent, methods of penetrating the earth to greater depths have been devised. Rotary Equipment Improvements in the construction and in the methods of operation of rotary drilling equipment have practically caused elimination of cable tools in California for all but shallow work. The rotary drill, from 1910 when it began to be a practical factor in California, has been making steady advances, first displacing cable tools for drilling to the oil sands in proved fields and later displacing the cable-tool outfit entirely. With the perfection of machinery for taking core samples of the formation penetrated, the rotary drill has become generally used for wildcat work, continuous coring being practiced when desirable. Deep Holes The use of the rotary drill has made commercially feasible the opening of oil fields at greater depths than was considered possible with cable tools. The method of treating hazards wherein value is decreased, is cited by R. D. Parks. Quite properly, the theory of probabilities is made use of when multiple hazards are under consideration. E. F. Fitzhugh, Jr. deals with the enhancement phase graphically and uses percentage of expectancy as derived by a study of conditions and the selection of a chance factor. It is believed that both of the authors referred to fully recognize the part which human judgment plays, and as coupled with experience, training, and the application of the theory of probabilities; in that respect the composer of this paper is in accord. Within the past year, the task of arriving at a mathematical method for handling the enhancement phase, and, additionally, coupling the negative and positive phases, was explored. The discussion by Tammann and Botschwar of the transition from eutectie grouth to denrdritic plus eu-tectic growth is reviewed and applied to metallic eutectic systems. Using expevimental data on the geowth rate of the Pb-Sn eutectic, and an extrapolalion of dendritic growth rate in tin and Sn-Pb alloys , qlcantitatice prerlictiotls of the extent of the eutectic region in tin-vich Sn-Pb alloys are made. There are no experimenta1 measuvements available for detailed comparison with these predictions. EUTECTIC structures form over a small range of compositions. The theory of lamellar growth presented by Jackson and Hunt' indicates that it is in principle possible to have eutectic growth over almost the complete range of compositions between the two solidus lines. This does not occur in practice. Alloys far from the eutectic composition grow dendritically followed by a eutectic as shown in Fig. I. The transition from a eutectic to a dendritic plus eutectic interface cannot be predicted from constitutional undercooling arguments because constitutional undercooling always exists ahead of the eutectic interface.' Reasonable predictions can, however, be made using arguments originally put forward by Tammanl. and Botschwar.3 These and later workers'"*6 carried out extensive experimental investigations of the extent of the eutectic range in organic materials. They concluded that the structure formed, eutectic or dendrites plus eutectic, depended on which structure grew faster at the given undercooling. This is, of course, equivalent to the structure which grows with the smallest undercooling at a given growth rate. In this paper, we will discuss these ideas briefly and then apply them to predict quantitatively the range of eutectic growth in tin-rich Pb-Sn alloys. The temperature dependence of the growth rates of dendrites and eutectic for a typical metal alloy of eutectic composition is shown schematically in Fig. 2(a). The growth rate for the eutectic increases more rapidly with undercooling than those of the dendrites because of the short diffusion path maintained in the eutectic, see Fig. 1. For an alloy off the eutectic composition on the A-rich side, the growth rates shift as shown in Fig. 2(b). The liquidus temperature of the a phase increases, that of the 3 phase decreases, and the temperature of zero growth rate for the eutectic does not change. The curves, particularly the dendritic ones, change shape as well, but for our purposes the principal effects occur because of the change in liquidus temperatures.3-6 In an isothermal system, only a dendrites will grow above TE, Fig. 2(b). The diffision coefficient for self-diffision of plutonium in the temperature range 350" to 440°C has been measured by using puZ3 as the tracer isotope. Autoradiopaphic techniques were used to inzlestigate the possibility of grain boundary diffusion, hut only evidence for volume diffusion was found. The least-squares fit of the data gives the .following equation for the diffision coefficient: The computer least-squares technique for fitting the nonlinear equations is outlined. DETERMINATION of the self-diffusion coefficient of the fcc 6 phase of plutonium is in principle a straightforward experimental task. However, the chemical reactivity, the intense @ activity, and the toxicity of plutonium put limitations on the experimental techniques. The technique selected included roll bonding for preparation of the diffusion couples and pulse-height analysis of the @-particle activity to determine the distribution of the PU tracer in the diffusion couples. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Couple Preparation. Cylinders about 0.5 in. in diam were cast from two special stocks of plutonium, one of which had been enriched in puZ3', as shown in the isotopic analyses listed in Table I. For each roll-bonded composite sheet, a cylinder 0.437 in. in diam and 0.190 in. thick was turned from each kind of plutonium on a lathe in a 98 pct He atmosphere. The two freshly machined cylinders were positioned face to face in a tube of commercially pure aluminum which had been sealed at one end by welding and the assembly was evacuated on a vacuum manifold overnight. The elapsed time between machining the faces of the plutonium cylinders and evacuating the loaded tube was about 15 min. After overnight evacuation of the assembly the indicated vacuum was 1 X 10"5 torr or better. The aluminum tube was then warmed and pinched off with a cold-welding tool. The pinched-off weld was also fusion-welded as an additional precaution against leakage of air into the evacuated assembly. The assembly was immediately heated for 30 min in a 250°C furnace and reduced in thickness by being passed through a rolling mill with rolls heated to 200°C. The rolling schedule (four passes of 100 mils each with a 10-min reheat after two passes) reduced the thickness of the assembly to 100 mils. The rolled assembly was allowed to cool normally in air. The rolled assembly was sheared at the edges and the aluminum peeled from the composite plutonium sheet. The elliptical sheet was about 0.060 in. thick and usually three 0.383-in.-diam disks could be punched from its central portion. The sheet was heated on a hot plate to the ductile low 0 range (140°C as measured by temperature-indicating pellets) before each disk was quickly punched. The quality of the bond in the disks was evaluated by metallographic examination of the scrap sheet adjoining the hole left by the punch. Only well-bonded specimens without oxide in the interface (as indicated by metallography) were considered satisfactory for further use. More than half of the specimens so examined contained sufficient oxide in the interface to be rejected. Diffusion Anneal. Each disk to be diffusion-annealed was wrapped in 1-mil-thick tantalum foil and sealed within a Pyrex capsule evacuated to 1 x 10~5 torr or better. This capsule was then sealed within another Pyrex capsule at a similar pressure. The diffusion anneals were carried out at temperatures between 350" and 440°C in Marshall furnaces adjusted to have a temperature gradient of not more than *1/2"C over a 5-in. length. This gradient was then further smoothed by using a nickel tube as a liner in the furnace. The liner was divided into three longitudinal cavities by a septum of nickel sheet to which two calibrated Chromel-Alumel thermocouples were attached. One thermocouple was used for controlling the furnace temperature by means of a Brown Pyrovane controller equipped with a Capaciline anticipation circuit; the second thermocouple was monitored twice daily with a Leeds and Northrup K-2 precision potentiometer.

It is proposed to consider here only comparisons made between results obtained when the materials employed are precisely the same, two furnaces at the same works for example, or the same furnace under different conditions as respects temperature of blast, method of charging, etc. With this limitation, the most important point in the comparison is the amount of fuel consumed per ton of iron. This, in fact, is the only item in the prime cost of the iron which can properly be said to vary in consequence of changes in the furnace process; for of the other principal items, the ore used per ton of iron, and also the amount of fluxing material, will depend on its richness, which, under the assumed conditions, will be practically invariable when taken over any considerable period; the labor cost also, from its nature, should be very nearly constant when estimated on the ton of iron. The tabular statement accompanying this note shows the money cost in each of the three departments of manufacture, of 17 leading items, and also the proportion (expressed in a clecimal fraction) which each of these items bears to the total cost. The statement can hardly be taken for more than an average illustration of the clear showing of ratios and of results which may be made by such an arrangement, for not only will these items vary from month to month in any given works, but the methods themselves of manufacture differ widely in different works. It is obvious that such a statement, however useful it may be, must be submitted with but exceedingly little explanation or discussion, or with none at all, for the reason that to enter at any satisfac-

RUDOLF GAIL, Miami, Ariz.-Since I wrote the paper on flotation which is in your hands, important developments have taken place, and, for this reason, I will try in a few words to bring it nearer up to date as far as the Inspiration plant is concerned. You, may have noticed that in the Inspiration concentrator, flotation is not solely relied upon for the recovery of the coarser material, but that flotation tailings are split into a sand and a slime product on drag classifiers. The sand product is treated on tables which thus supplement the work of the flotation machines. Extensive tests have shown, us that, if we wanted to, we could leave out these tables and substitute additional flotation machines, as they will make fully as good, if not a better recovery than tables on the deslimed feed, but the treatment would be more expensive, especially in view of the fact that oils are required which cost more than those which we are now using in our main flotation plant. We have, however, decided to apply flotation treatment to our table middlings. I would also like to add a few words regarding the treatment of oxidized copper ores. Although our experience shows that the addition of hydrogen sulphide and other soluble sulphides effects a very good recovery of copper carbonates with certain ores, we have not been able to prove that we could use it advantageously for the ore mixture which we are treating in our concentrator, and for this reason, have looked toward leaching for extracting the carbonate and silicate copper that we are losing now. Experiments in this direction are going on and are giving very encouraging results. It may interest you to hear that we intend to use limestone for the precipitation of the copper which goes into solution, as electrolytic precipitation seems to be out of the question on account of the diluteness of the resulting solutions, and precipitation by iron was rightly objected to on account of the unavoidable contamination of the water supply. We feel very hopeful about the success of our limestone precipitation which, if it holds what it seems to promise, will develop into a novel feature of copper metallurgy.

A matter of much concern at present to the coal-mining industry of Great Britain is the effect of the working of the Coal Mines Act, 1930. This Act, which received the Royal Assent on Aug. 1, 1930, contains five parts: (1) production, supply and sale of coal; (11) the reorganization of the coal-mining industry; (111) hours of work; (IV) the Coal Mines National Industrial Board; (V) general. The first three parts are of major interest and discussion can be confined to them. Part I.—Production, Supply and Sale of Coal Under Part I of the Coal Mines Act, 1930, provision is made for central and district schemes to regulate the production, supply and sale of coal by the fixation of standard tonnage, quota and minimum prices. By Nov. 1, 1930, all the district schemes came into force with the exception of that for Scotland, where the majority of the coal-owners did not see their way to accept the amendments to their draft scheme demanded by the Mines Department. A compulsory scheme for Scotland was thereupon prepared by the Mines Department and put into force on Nov. 24, 1930. It is administered by the coal-owners of the district. The essence of the schemes is the allocation of tonnage for each district by a Central Council, and the allocation of quota for each pit in a district by an Executive Board for that district. Up to Dec. 31, 1930, the various bodies of coal-owners engaged in administering the schemes were employed in work preliminary to their full operation. Standard tonnages had to be determined and coals had to be classified. In consequence, it was not found possible to put the regulation of output into force until Jan. 1, 1931. The determination of minimum prices proved to be an even longer process, and only in a few districts were minimum price schedules operative during the first quarter of this year. The working of the schemes during the March quarter, 1931, has been reviewed in an official publication by the Mines Department,' which can be summarized as follows:

IN the course of the development of the phase equilibrium diagram for the system Zr-Cr,' the structure of an as-cast allov having the composition ZrCr2 was analyzed and established to be isomorphous with MgZn2 (C14, hexagonal lattice, 12 atoms per unit cell). In a recent paper on the same system, Hayes, Roberson, and Davies' report for the ZrCr2 phase an isomorphy with MgCu2 (C15, cubic lattice, 24 atoms per unit cell). It appeared that this conflict might be resolved by assuming a high and low temperature modification for ZrCr2. That this was the case with the phase TiCr2 has recently been demonstrated by Levinger." Specimens of ZrCr2 annealed at 1200°, 1100°, 994", 900°, 834", 800°, and 700°C, respectively, and subsequently quenched were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis. It was successfully demonstrated that a transition from the MgZn, structure at lower temperatures to the MgCu, structure did occur at some temperature between 900" and 994°C. Table I lists the observed structures at the various annealing temperatures. In Table II, a summary of line spacings and intensities is given for each of the allotropic modifications. The first six lines of the MgCu2 structures have been located in the table to illustrate the close similarity between the patterns. Lattice parameters of the two modifications were calculated by a least squares solution of equations for interplanar spacings for a series of high angle lines. The results are as follows: MgZn2 type - c = 8.262 kX, A = 5.079 kX. MgCu2 type — a = 7.195 kX. It is interesting to note that TiCr2 behaves in reverse fashion yn that the MgCu, structure is the low temperature modification and the MgZn2 structure is the high temperature modification. THIS paper reports the results of viscosity measurements on cadmium and indium undertaken as part of a continuing program of liquid metals research at the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada. For several years this work has continued with support from the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee and the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization. In the literature, existing viscosity data for cadmium are conflicting and for indium are scarce. To achieve reliable viscosity values, further work was deemed desirable. Viscosities were measured using an absolute technique applied to an oscillating closed right cylinder of liquid metal. The apparatus, constructed in this laboratory, and the techniques involved in its use have been described in an earlier paper.' In calculating viscosity coefficients from the experimental data. Roscoe's2 mathematical analysis was used. Because accurate viscosity determinations are dependent on accurate density data, and since the available data in the literature are conflicting, the densities of liquid cadmium and indium were also determined in this laboratory by a pycnometric technique. This increased the control exercised over all the variables contributing to the accuracy of viscosity measurements. For both density and viscosity determinations, cadmium and indium of 99.999 pct purity were used. These materials were obtained from Cominco Ltd. In order to suppress excessive evaporation losses and help prevent oxidation, a technique developed in measuring the viscosity of zinc' was used for cadmium. This involved maintaining an atmosphere of purified hydrogen in the viscosimeter during the rela- tively long periods while the experimental temperature was changed and stabilized between individual determinations of the logarithmic decrement. Then, immediately prior to a decrement measurement. the viscosimeter was rapidly evacuated to a pressure of about 2 X 10-6 torr. On the other hand. with indium. no difficulties arise from vaporization or oxidation. In this case. therefore. the apparatus was held under a constant vacuum of about 2 x 10-6 torr. When all sources of random and systematic error have been evaluated, the technique is considered to yield data accurate within 10.5 pct. The viscosity of cadmium was measured to a maximum temperature of 451.8°C and that of indium to 346.5°C. These temperatures are. respectively. 130° and 190°C above the melting points. Two separate runs were made on indium. The results are given in Table I and, when plotted. yield the smooth curves evident in Figs. 1 and 2. Values of A and C to fit the well-known Andrade1 equation were determined by a regression analysis. The equation is: where n = coefficient of viscosity. i = specific volume. T = temperature in °K Despite its empirical nature. Andrade's equation has been shown by many workers to describe accurately the temperature dependence of viscosity. During the current research program, this equation has been found to fit the data precisely for all the metals and alloys that have been studied.5,6 The A and C' values for cadmium and indium are given in Table 11. Comparing the magnitude of the present data with those of previous workers,7-10 as has been done in Fig. 1, it is evident that the results of Fisher and Phillips10 deviate markedly from the rest. With the exception of one point from Gering and Sauerwald,7 all other data agree within ±2.5 pct. However, the agreement between the present results and the work of Menz and sauerwald9 is especially good over the entire experimental temperature range. The oxidation of tantalum is assumed to occur by four simultaneous first-order chain reactions; solution of oxygen in the metal, nucleation and growth of a suboxide phase at the metal surface and two phase boundary processes which give rise to two different modifications of Ta2O5. A rate equation is then formulated which accounts for all principal details of oxidation behavior, unifies and correlatss the results of the principal investigations, and expresses the rate as a function of pressure, temperature, and time. For purposes of practical application, the expressions: may be used below and above 700T respectively to determine the regression rate of tantalum in cm per hr, where T is to be expressed in "K and P in atmospheres pressure of oxygm. The equations will reproduce within a factor of two all reported experimental rates in the temperature range 475" to 1400°C and pressure range 0.000026 to 40.8 atm 0. 1 HE oxidation kinetics of tantalum have been investigated thoroughly in the temperature range 50" to 1400 and pressure range 1.32 x l0-' to 40.8 atm pressure of 0,and as a result, the principal features of the oxidation of tantalum are known and have been described in considerable detail. The exposition of the characteristics of the behavior of tantalum in oxygen has been largely descriptive, with considerable attention being devoted to elucidating the structure, composition, and morphology of the resulting oxide products. The weight change vs time results have usually been reported graphically. With the exception of the linear rate below 700 C and the process of diffusion of interstitial oxygen into the metal,6'9 no effort has been made to characterize the reaction rates in functional form. It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate that when the fundamental principles of chemical kinetics are rigorously followed, the results of the principal investigations will be correlated and unified and the oxidation rale may be expressed as an analytic function of pressure, temperature, and time. In addition to accounting for the temperature and pressure dependency of the oxidation rate, the following minor features will be accounted for as a result of the basic analysis: the initial period of nonline-arity in rate at low temperatures, which decreases with increasing temperature;3'5'7 the rate vs temperature cusps obtained at constant pressure"5 the concentration gradient of oxygen interstitially dissolved in the metal.5'7 The analysis will also be consistent with the overall chemistry of reaction and with all visual, microscopic, and X-ray observations. DEVELOPMENT OF RATE EQUATION As a fundamental basis for the treatment of metal-oxygen reaction kinetics, it will be regarded that the rate of reaction is determined by the concentration and not the activity or chemical potential. It is further assumed that all metal-oxygen reactions are first order complex chain reactions" whose rate is dependent on the concentration of an intermediate species which is a complex function of the oxygen concentration, or oxygen pressure, only. The basic rate equation is therefore: is the weight of oxygen consumed by the reaction, A is that portion of the area of the metal over which the reaction is occurring (cm2), t the time (sec), kf the rate constant for forward reaction, C the intermediate species concentration and f '([Oz]) and f (Po,) are complex functions of oxygen concentration and Oxygen pressure respectively. Reverse reactions may usually be neglected in metal-oxygen systems since a large negative free energy generally accompanies these reactions. Eq. [I] takes different forms when the rate of reaction is controlled by diffusion into or through a phase or at a phase boundary. IN the western mines, the boss, engineer, geologist, or nipper in making rounds have a password which usually guarantees safe entrance to a working place from below the working miner. Most men won't climb a raise or enter a stope from below where a miner is working until they have shouted "nothin' down" and heard those words shouted back by the miners above. "Nothin' down" is a safety pledge as necessary and as binding as the truce flag to the soldier. It implies mutual confidence that work will be suspended until the person below has come abreast of the workers; and also confidence that the miner who replies "nothin' down" is reasonably sure the place is safe to enter. Like truce flags which are not infallible, so is this password subject to human errors or unexpected falls of rock, tools, or timber. Everyone knows these unavoidable hazards, but what is important to the exposed man is that in that precise moment of time when he has heard the reassurance of "nothin' down," he knows that safety is uppermost in the minds of the men above him. With such assurance we would go anywhere and so would most mining men. If that period of safety consciousness, procured by the utterance of two words, could be multiplied to equal the hours in the working day, there would not be any accidents but those by "the act of God." It is the aim of every safety program to make safety as natural as breathing. That is the reason for the posters, the conferences, instruction periods, safety engineers, and the inspections. In this tremendous surge of industrial might . to make this nation and our very families safe S from the predatory forces abroad in the world today; let us not lose sight of the fact that the . safety of our manpower is more precious than any commodity. Production without safety is detrimental to the national interest, to that of the company, and to the individual. If the words "nothin' down" can give us the best human guarantee of safety, for however brief a time, let us adopt them at least in principle as our slogan in 1952. High-volatile coals are most desirable for kiln firing. Low-volatile and even anthracite coals can be used successfully. Most periodic kilns use coal and are hand fired. A few stoker installations have been economically successful. Continuous tunnel kilns reduce fuel consumption 40 to 55 per cent. They are rapidly replacing periodic kilns in the manufacture of the finer wares. They have found great favor in the refractory industry and are successfully used in firing almost all kinds of heavy clay products. Fuel oil has found rather wide application in the Southwest and West. Natural gas is a satisfactory fuel for kiln firing. It is the principal competitor of coal and has largely replaced it for firing the finer wares but cannot compete with it in firing heavy clay products except in regions where cheap gas is available. Figures are given showing the relative thermal efficiency of coal and natural gas as used for firing ceramic ware. The ceramic industry uses from 12,000,000 to 12,500,-000 tons of coal per normal year. The principal use of coal is in firing the heavy clay products. This potential market amounts to about 9,250,000 tons per year. Coal producers could increase sales by furnishing expert firing instruction.

The Minas de Matahambre No. 2 shaft, vertical, four-compartment lined with steel sets and hardwood lagging, has been sunk 2057 ft. On account of rock structure, over-all cross-section dimensions are 23 by 6 ft. Certain sections have been concreted. Two compartments are for handling ore and men, one for supplies and men, and one for manway, cables and counterweight. Two 250-ton capacity skip pockets with air-operated gates and steel cartridge pockets have been installed underground. A steel "A" headframe, a 250-ton steel receiving bin, and skip-to-man-cage changing equipment have been provided. Skip capacity is 102½ cu. ft. The hoist is a Nordberg double-drum 10 ft. by 6 ft. 6 in. geared, electrically driven, with parallel grooving for 1-?in. cables. Maximum hoisting speed is 1600 ft. per minute. The motor-generator set, control panel, slip regulator and hoist accumulator are housed in the basement of the hoist house. The electrical equipment is General Electric. The direct-current hoist motor is 800 hp. Control is of the Ward-Leonard-Ilgner type. The motor-generator flywheel set, normal speed 720 r.p.m., consists of an 800-hp. induction motor, a 22-ton flywheel (dia. 117 in.) and a 650-kw. generator.

ROLLER—As one who has been privileged to read Mr. Poland's paper before its publication, I wish to express high praise for it and the record which it gives of the work done by the Research and Development Department of Revere Copper and Brass Inc. in developing a satisfactory furnace for the recovery of metallic zinc from secondary metals by distillation. I have also had the opportunity of studying the operation of the furnace when running on scrap brass at the Detroit plant of Revere, and I can therefore say from knowledge gained first-hand that the unit is efficient and economical when used in conjunction with distillation. However, when I read what Mr. Poland has to say in reference to the possibility of using the furnace for melting copper cathodes for the production of oxygen-free and tough-pitch copper shapes, I am constrained to be somewhat skeptical. No doubt the furnace can readily be modified so as to make it possible to melt cathodes, but that is only a part of what is required to produce refinery shapes. Because of its construction the atmosphere in the furnace is highly reducing and even without protective gases such as nitrogen the copper cathodes which are
