Longwall methods to mine coal in the United States provide the potential advantages of greatly increased productivity, improved safety, and a higher percent recovery. However, use of longwall systems during the past 10 years has increased much more slowly than was anticipated. This paper discusses some of the problems inhibiting the increased use of longwall systems and a proposed research program to address one of the most critical problem areas.

Flotation responses of chrysocolla and rhodonite are correlated with electrophoretic mobility and infrared spectroscopy measurements. Flotation is effected in the pH ranges in which hydrolysis of the metal ions comprising the mineral occurs. The roles of mineral solubility and precipitate formation are suggested.

In this investigation, a method to measure the basic characteristics of comminution has been developed. These characteristics are expressed by the three major comminution functions - crushing probability function, energy function, and breakage function. By testing three different minerals, quartz, calcite, and jasper, these three functions are determined. It is shown that the crushing qualities of a material can be valued by three constants which define the two first comminution functions. These two functions give the relation between particle size, probability of crushing, and the energy input.

To produce such a facility In today's environment requires correlation by the engineers involved of geologic data, mine planning, scheduling, future planning, water resources, power, land availability, testing, design, start-up and environmental considerations. At Jim Walter Resources Alabama coal property, the first of twelve projected longwall mining systems started to operate In March, 1979, at the No. 3 Mine. The second longwall started to mine adjacent to the original workings in June, 1980. At the end of 1980, 2 ½ panels had been extracted using the same basic ventilation plan. A single split of air ventilates each longwall panel with intake air traveling the headgate across the face to the tailgate where it is directed and controlled to a 1500 foot deep fan shaft specifically located to exhaust from the longwall area and the gobs associated with longwall extraction. The simplicity of the system makes it easy to understand, apply and control In a relatively gassy coal bed.

Phosphate clay wastes, as currently produced, leave montmorillonite clay in a highly dispersed and disintegrated form. Alternative processing, where the extent of swelling and self-disintegration of such clays is controlled or limited, may result in improved settling and consolidation behavior. In this study, a method to control montmorillonite dispersion, through preservation of clay tactoids, was examined. Through this process, significant improvements in settling rates and sediment solids concentrations were achieved in both pure clay systems and on simulated phosphate clay wastes.

One of the problems facing both the designer and the user of magnetic separators is the evaluation of the body forces acting on particles in the magnetic field of the separator. Perhaps the most elegant method of evaluating the body force associated with a drum-type magnetic separator is that recently suggested by W. F. Brown.' A two year study was made of the waste disposal of the pebble rock phosphate industry. Solid slimes are impounded in large settling areas and the process water is re-used. Clear effluent was not found to be toxic to fish or animal life in field tests or in controlled experiments.

MINE operators have a choice of several classifications of mechanical loaders. Within each classification there are many types and makes available. Table I lists loaders on which manufacturing data as to operating characteristics are available. This paper discusses the conditions met in a mine as they affect these characteristics. It is assumed that management will provide satisfactory engineering, supervision, power, maintenance, loader service within a concentration of workings, and a balanced working cycle served by balanced production equipment. These are factors which affect the optimum operational efficiency of a loader. The conditions which determine loader choice are:
