In accordance with the provision of the Constitution, notice is here given to all Members, Associates, and Junior Associates, that the dues of the year 1919 will be payable on Jan. 1, 1919, at the office of the Secretary. The clues for Members and Associates are $12 per year and the sum of. $2 additional is asked of those Members and Associates who desire to 'have the two volumes bound in the Institute's standard binding. The clues of Junior Associates are $5 per year.

The mechanism of using gold as the basis for a loan was suggested to the treasurer of a mining company operating two gold heap leach mines at a time of high interest rates. Due to the seasonal nature of cash flows from operations, and the relatively low cost of funds this scheme was attractive. The paper describes the agreement with the bank, gives an example of the transactions, and describes other types of gold loans.

Much has been written in the past about the non- cataracting ball mill as typified by the installations of the Tennessee Copper Co. at Copperhill and the three units of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. in its Humboldt and Republic mills. Because no direct comparisons are available from the Cleveland-Cliffs plants and because the published data of Tennessee Copper Co.'s London mill covered a period of development over several years, it has been difficult for engineers to grasp the full significance of the non-cataracting economics.

The Mining and Metallurgical Club of the University of Toronto held a very successful meeting at the Engineers' Club on Jan. 29, 1917. Interesting papers on the Arizona Mining Districts and on the Creighton Mine at Sudbury were read. Several members of the freshman class who have changed from other branches of engineering to mining have been taken into the Club, so that we are now booming. We are also making an attempt to have more of our members apply for junior membership in the Institute, and hope to report favorably along these lines in the near future. C. A. Two AIME sponsored symposia to be held during the year 1970 will examine copper, lead and zinc metallurgy in considerable depth. MBD and the Extractive Metallurgy Division of The Metallurgical Society will participate in both. Thus, the full field of minerals and metals processing including milling, smelting, and refining will be covered. Since these symposia hold special interest to MBD members, it was felt that a useful purpose could be served by devoting this column to a description of what has been arranged for the registrants.

PROFESSOR CECIL H. DESCH of Sheffield Univer-sity is to give the sixth annual Institute of Metals lecture in connection with the A. I. M. E. meeting in February. Professor Desch is well known to metallur-gists in this country not only from his books on metal-lography, intermetallic compounds, the physicist in metallurgy, and the chemistry and testing of cement, but also by his many published papers in the technical journals.
