The kinetics of copper cementation on rotating disks of body and tear-top beverage can aluminum alloys were studied as a function of temperature and copper ion concentration. Both alloys followed the two-step kinetic regions, an initially slow rate followed by an enhanced rate. Experimental activation energy determinations (9.04 to 19.62 kJ/mol) indicated that ionic diffusion controlled the reaction mechanism between 20° and 60°C. At low temperatures (< 20°C), the system appeared to be controlled by the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film. The results of this study showed that cementation kinetics for the beverage can aluminum alloys are similar to those for pure aluminum. It was also found that the chemical removal of the oxide layer is less important for the alloys than /or the pure aluminum system. The characteristics of the resultant copper deposits were studied under a scanning electron microscope, and the reaction kinetics seemed to depend strongly on the nature and morphology of the deposits. In addition, maximum rates occurred when the deposit structures were fine feathery dendrites.

A recent research study performed under US Bureau of Mines Contract No. J0199088 "Modular Irrigation Equipment for Reclaimed Strip Mined Lands" investigated the feasibility of irrigation as a reclamation tool in the arid and semi-arid regions of the Western United States. Review of mined land characteristics, evaluation of irrigation systems, and assistance from the mining industry resulted in the design of two strategies for the implementation of reclamation irrigation using solid set systems. It is not the intent of this paper to suggest the generalizations made on the basis of a six state area can extend to the design of an irrigation system for a specific mine site. The purpose is to present two irrigation strategies that may be implemented with solid set irrigation in this six state area. The reader should note that the following is the result of research and, therefore, original concepts were presented. The ultimate validity of these concepts will be determined by future field tests.

The ore-hearth was the earliest type of furnace used in smelting Mississippi Valley lead-ores, which are very pure, and low in silver-content. The first smelters made no attempts to recover lead from the smoke; and since about 15 per cent. of the lead in the charge escaped in this manner, early practice with the hearth was decidedly wasteful. At most of the large smelting-plants blast-furnaces with auxiliary roasters were substituted for the hearths long ago. But, upon the introduction of the Lewis and Bartlett bag-process for collecting fume, the ore-hearth was used by companies engaged in the manufacture of pigments, simply on account of the large percentage of fume made by it. In fact, the extraction of lead mas kept down by the use of hot blast and other devices. During recent years, however, several smelting companies have realized that the preliminary roasting of galena for the blast-furnace is not economical, and have, therefore, replaced the roasting-furnace with a modification of the old Scotch hearth, in which a large percentage of the lead in a charge is

THE change in mechanical properties accompanying quench aging of carbon in a iron has been known for a number of years. Since the amount of carbon involved is rather small, however, no measurements could be made to correlate the property change with the state of precipitation of the carbide. Indeed, until a few years ago it was not plain which property might be used to indicate the state of the progress of precipitation. Some years ago the internal friction of solid solutions of carbon in a iron was demonstrated, and the use of this phenomenon to ascertain the amount of carbon in solid solution at any given time was developed. Shortly afterward the author made a number of measurements in which changes in electrical resistance, thermoelectric emf, and hardness were determined simultaneously with the internal friction (and hence with the precipitation) ? A little later Dijkstra and Wert measured the change in magnetic coercive force accompanying aging.&apos; The present work was undertaken to inquire into the changes in yield strength accompanying aging. The work was done on specimens made of Puron. These specimens were 0.05 in. in diam and about 6 in. long. The Lake Superior blast-furnaces probably represent the maximum economy of fuel possible in this country. They smelt an ore which is very rich and easily reducible, and as the small amount of gangue present is not all silica, but in part a silicate, the amount of limestone required is a minimum. The average yield of the ore treated at six furnaces was 63 per cent., and the average quantity of limestone 179 pounds per ton of pig. The fuel used is charcoal, so burned as to retain most of the combustible volatile part, which, before the utilization of furnace-gas, was burned away. With these conditions it is not surprising that the Lake Superior charcoal practice is extraordinary in almost every respect. In any scientific discussion of American furnace work, the establishments there will be found at the head of the list, and they work under conditions which are extremely favorable for careful study. The Bay Furnace, near Marquette, has the honor of carrying "the broom" for the largest daily make. With a capacity of 1908 cubic feet it has, for months together, produced 29 tons of pig, graded at

The copper-bearing ores concentrated at the Anaconda plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Go. are principally a mixture of copper and iron sulfides associated in a gangue consisting of quartz, lightly altered granite and feldspars, with sphalerite and galena and more rarely barite and hubnerite as accessory minerals. The predominant sulfide is pyrite. The copper minerals present are: chalcocite, bornite (erubescite), enargite, chalcopyrite, covellite, tetrahedrite and some tennantite. Normal concentrator practice removes a slime prior to ball-mill grinding. The deslimed ore is ground to approximately 10 per cent plus 65 mesh for flotation. Two selective flotation circuits are used, one for deslimed ore and one for slime. Microscopic studies of concentrator products disclose such an interlocking of copper minerals with pyrite that any material increase in concentrate grade entails additional grinding unless recovery is sacrificed to a considerable extent. The committee appointed .by W. R. Ingalls, president of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, to nominate candidates for the&apos; annual gold medal of the Society consisted of E. G. Spilsbury, J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Bradley Stoughton. This committee recommended Mr. Schneider of the Creuzot Works in France for achievements in ferrous metallurgy, which recommendation was approved by the Society. From the report of the committee, the following facts relative to Mr. Schneider&apos;s career are taken: Born in 1868, Charles Eugene Schneider undertook the management of the Schneider establishment in 1898, after the death of his father, Henri Schneider. Under his enlightened management, the Schneider establishments have been considerably extended, their activity being not only directed to increasing production, but also to spreading more and more their scope for action in all branches of industry-in metallurgy, mechanical and electrical construction, shipbuilding, artillery and ammunition, and in public works. During the 10 years preceding the war, the number of employees in these establishments, and without counting those of the more numerous subsidiaries, increased approximately 50 per cent. IN giving my opinion of the importance of Colombia as a field for investment for those interested in mining for the precious metals, I must begin by quoting Sir Clement Markham, who, in one of his presidential addresses to the Royal Geographical Society of Great Britain, called the attention of its members to the fact that " although Colombia is the least known and least developed of the South American republics, it is far and away the richest mineral country of then all." This to American investors is extremely interesting, as the country is the most accessible of all the South American republics from the United States. Almost all of the gold shipped by the Spaniards from Madre de Dios, now Colon, came from Colombia, and statistics from the Mint at Medellin, the capital of the Department of Antioquia, go to show that the total production of the precious metals of Colombia, dating from the Spanish conquest in &apos;the fifteenth century to the present time, aggregates the enormous total of $700,000,000. Of this amount, nearly 70 per cent. represents gold obtained from the placers of the Republic, more than one-half of which came from the Department of Antioquia, the balance being divided between the placers of the Choco and the rest of the Republic. The remaining 30 per cent. of the $700,000,000 represents the silver and gold obtained from the quartz mines, the silver greatly predominating.

The problem of the measurement of in situ stresses in rock masses has, in recent years, become one of the prime concerns of investigators and researchers in the field of rock mechanics. Numerous instruments have been developed for that purpose and various techniques have been used to determine the absolute values of these stresses at a point.l The "stress-relief" technique has gained the widest acceptance. In its usual application it relies on one of the two following principles: (1) Measurements of the changes in a "solid inclusion" in a borehole,2 or (2) Measurements of the diametral deformation of a borehole with a free boundary." The theoretical development, in the case of the latter, is based upon an evaluation of the deformation of a circular hole in an infinite plate under the action of a uniaxial stress field. Expressions for the deformations may be obtained by using either the plain strain or the generalized plane stress theoretical approach of the classical theory of Elasticity, which assumes that the material is linearly elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The solution for the case of a biaxial stress field is obtained by the Principal of Superposition. The circular hole becomes elliptical after deformation takes place under the action of a uniaxial or biaxial stress field applied to the plate. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND Because of the potential for large reserves from increased production in the eastern Devonian shales, the Department of Energy (DOE), Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) selected these materials for the application and evaluation of existing and novel well stimulation techniques. One technique selected for further study was pulse tailoring, or tailored pulse loading, i.e., shaping the input borehole pressure history to produce a specific fracture pattern and to increase communication with the reservoir. The complexity and expense of in-situ mineback experiments prohibits direct evaluation of pulse tailoring in various geologic formations. An alternative approach used by SRI International consisted of evaluating fracture enhancement by computational simulations with supporting laboratory experiments and using data from field tests by other agencies to validate the computational model (McHugh and Keough, 1980). Laboratory experiments were conducted on core samples to determine fracture phenomenology and parameters and to verify material properties. The fracture parameters were obtained from posttest measurements of fracture distributions and correlation with stresses calculated by a wave propagation code. Model development was guided by these experiments and similar experiments in various materials performed by other agencies. The validity of the modeling, parameters, and scaling was evaluated by comparing fracture patterns from field tests with calculational simulations.

OF no less importance nor less terrifying to consider than the marvelous effects of guns are those produced with fire by powder in underground mines. These are truly not only similar to fearful natural earthquakes, but it can perhaps be said that these made by art surpass the wrath of the earth with greater effect. For if the latter shakes it happens that it causes the things on the surface to shake and sometimes to fall into ruins, but the former not only shakes but always functions and destroys-surely a marvelous effect which is almost incomprehensible, and if experience did not demonstrate it, it could scarcely be believed. Who would say that the mountains, things of such great hardness, would yield to men, easily opening their bowels? Likewise, one who had not seen it would say that it was impossible for men to have a way of administering at will fearful and destructive thunderbolts which are of such a kind that, although men make them, they cannot protect themselves against them; indeed they cannot call themselves safe from the evilness of gunpowder even in mountains composed of very hard stones or in budded structures. ABOUT three years ago, I. L. Dunn, of Marietta, Ohio, found that wells could be cleaned by blowing with compressed air; this method has been used with great success on many wells in the Marietta, Ohio, district, where compressed air is being used to increase production, by forcing oil through the depleted sands. About a year ago, the process was successfully used to clean out wells in the Lenapah pool in Oklahoma, where an air plant had been installed, under the supervision of I. L. Dunn. Wells from 900 to 1000 ft. deep, with 40 ft. of sand and cavings in them, were cleaned out in from two to three days. The use of this process had, so far, been limited to properties using the Smith-Dunn process, where compressed air, under suitable pressure and volume, was available. For other properties, a portable compressor seemed essential; this was built and successfully demonstrated by Mr. Dunn, for the Tidal Oil Co. in September, 1924. The process of cleaning out with air has been described.1 It consists of lowering the tubing into the well, with a shoe or nipple of heavy pipe substituted for the perforated anchor on the bottom. Into the tubing, compressed air is introduced through a rotary swivel hose at the top, or by means of swing connections. The tubing is lowered to the top of the cave to be cleaned out, several barrels of water are put into the hole, and the compressed air is turned on. This blows out the material between the casing and the tubing, the tubing being lowered as the material is removed.

This compares with 434,810,000 bbl. consumed during 1935 and indicates an increase of 10.46 per cent. Export shipments amounted to 27,831,000 bbl. while in 1935 they totaled 30,613,000 bbl. Total demand, therefore, was 509,422,000 bbl., or 9.16 per cent above the 465,423,000 bbl. of 1935. Following are the figures for several years: Already we are supplying gasoline domestically and as foreign shipments at a rate almost 25 per cent greater than our low level of 1933. IN my opinion antimony* is a composition made by Nature to create a metallic mineral that is overflowing with an undue proportion of hot and dry material and with its moisture poorly mixed, with an effect wholly contrary to the composition of metals. Therefore, it comes to be, like quicksilver, a mineral deformity and monstrosity among metals. Or it might be a material that is about to reach metallic perfection, but is hindered from doing so by being mined too soon. I am persuaded to this opinion by seeing in it so many parts similar to those of metals, considering first its clear and brilliant color and its great weight and then the regulus† that it leaves at the bottom of the vessel on melting. Obviously it has in it much earthiness, as is attested by the odor of its sulphurous burning, its imperfect blending, its defective mixture, its difficult fusion, and finally the character of its regulus, for although this is very white and almost more shining than silver, it is much more brittle than glass. [28] The practical philosophers make great use of it in their alchemistic work in order, they say, to make an oil that they believe gives the color of gold to fixed silver. For this reason many of them hold it in high repute, especially the kind that has long thin fibers like a bundle of bristles. And they say that they can obtain greater results with it than with sulphur. I believe this, however, in case it is aided by sulphur, since it is nearer the metallic species than sulphur is.
