THE object of the writer is to call attention to a rather unique aggregation of economic products distributed over a line of succeeding formations about 3 mi. long, to be seen within a few miles of La Salle, Ill. Fig. 1 is an ideal section of the stratification exposed and exploited along a distance of 3 1/5 mi. in a southwesterly direction from the quarry of the Utica Hydraulic Cement Co. located near the historic site of Kaskaskia village to the Oglesby, shaft at Oglesby. No attempt has been made to cover the whole field, special mention only being made (with the exception of two places) of the operations found along the course or parallel to the direction assumed in the ideal section. I have used Fig. 2, after J. H. Bent and De Witt Kelly, to locate the relation of the La Salle anticline to the coal mines of this district and to show the operation of No. 1 and 3 mines of the Illinois Zinc Co.

This paper contains a review and discussion of the major design parameters of a block caving mine, with special attention given to access, development, and operational methods. Information will be provided on the economics and costs of various design alternatives, and how they can influence financial results of a particular project. Technical and economic factors that pertain to an actual operation, Freeport Indonesia, Incorporated's block caving mine in Indonesia, will be provided, and highlights of the planning, development and operation of this mine will be presented. The major thrust of the paper will be to emphasize the importance of good planning and to encourage economic analysis of various methods of layout and design.

Stimulated by the hearing protection clauses in the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Law, attempts were made to determine what safety hazards, in terms of warning signal discrimination, are attendant upon the wearing of hearing protectors. Warning signals of dangerous roof conditions were collected and analyzed from 11 different coal mines in four different coal seams. Primarily, signals of audible level emanating from roof, floor, or coal were recorded. The interpretations of these signals were seen to be very dependent upon coincident visual and tactile signals. Acoustic character of such signals is shown to be dependent upon the spectral energy distribution of the pulses. Roof talk signals generally have broad-band spectra concentrated below 5 kHz. Reverberation times of acoustic pulses are generally less than 0.5 sec in duration. Indications have developed which link the coal mine entry dimensions with the nature of noises recorded there. Related experiments suggest that roof talk can be discriminated from background noise equally well when wearing protection as when not. This conclusion is only appropriate when noise levels warrant the wearing of protection. When quiet, the wearing of protection somewhat reduces discriminatory ability.

This study of the relationship of the accumulation and drainage of oil to the structural conditions in the Wilmington oil field is presented with the hope that the data contained herein will aid in efficient exploita-tion of other fields where similar conditions exist. It is also probable that the conditions observed in this field will enable accurate comparisons of various well-spacing programs as to efficiency of production and ultimate recovery. Ore deposits are commonly divided into two classes, syngenetic and epigenetic, according to whether the ore was deposited together with the enclosing rock or was introduced after its deposition or solidification. Epigenetic deposits, which are by far the more important class, owe their formation to the channels that permitted the ingress of their metals, and both classes are subject to great modification by post-mineral changes in the containing rocks. A discussion of the structural features of rocks, therefore, necessarily precedes any consideration of ore deposits or processes of ore deposition. The arrangement of sediments in parallel and approximately horizontal layers is called stratification, and is an original prop¬erty of sedimentary rocks. Successive strata of the same sedimentary bed commonly differ from each other in some minor characteristic, such as texture or color, which results in a bedded or stratified appearance. The subjection of a rock to pressure develops within it parallel planes of weakness, called cleavage planes, along which the rock breaks into relatively regular slabs or blocks; the direc¬tion of these cleavage planes, which bear no relation to stratifica¬tion, is determined by the direction of the pressure that produced them. Where there are more than one set of cleavage planes, one of them is likely to be more prominent than the others. In sedimentary rocks, the cleavage may coincide with the stratifica¬tion but more commonly cuts across it. Van Hise has defined cleavage as the "capacity present in some rocks to break in some directions more easily than in others." Cleavage, therefore, does not imply the existence of subdivisions, but rather the tendency to subdivide along certain planes.

The fact that iron expands when heated, until fusion takes place, and that molten iron is consequently less dense than solid iron of the same grade, is now universally admitted. It was proved by the extensive experiments of Mr. Thomas Wrightson, reported in the Jownal of the Iron and Steel Institute (1890, No. 1, p. 72, and 1891, No. 1, pp. 75, log), and, in a manner, is illustrated in heavy founding by the shrinkage 'of the molten metal, which must be " fed " in order to obtain solid castings. This decrease in volume requiring " feeding" while the metal is still liquid I call " shrinkage," applying the term " contraction" to the decrease in volume which takes place after solidification, while the iron is cooling to atmospheric temperature. The light-work founder, not having the opportunity to make heavy castings, in which shrinkage can be observed, is apt to confound the two; but they are in fact distinct, and are separated by an act of expanion, which takes place at the moment of solidification. The fact of this expansion was first practically demonstrated by Mr. John R. Whitney, of Philadelphia, Pa., whose experiments are recorded in the National Car and Locomotive Builder of May, 1889. Experiments recently made by the writer indicate that there is a constant relation between this expansion and the preceding shrinkage and forcibly demonstrate the necessity of " feeding " a casting to make its interior solid. This is a matter with which all makers and users of castings have experienced difficulty. The founder being heretofore unable to define correctly the principles involving the urgent necessity of " feeding " has failed to impress the moulder with its importance in making sound castings.

As a result, agricultural objectives have become more manageable, prompting governments to shift priorities to the accelerated development of their industrial sectors. The basis of any sustained industrialization program, the governments concede, is the development of a vibrant minerals sector.

THIS investigation was undertaken to determine some of the factors contributing to the embrittle-ment of glass-coated silver wire on heat treatment. The materials used in this investigation were 22 and 23 AWG silver wires obtained from Handy and Harman as "fine quality, soft temper." A wet analysis of one sample showed 99.8 pct Ag. An investigation was made of ground response to pillar retreat mining in a 1.7 meter thick seam at 108 meter depth at a site in northern West Virginia. This paper describes mining-related stress changes and movements at mine level, displacements within the overburden, ground surface subsidence and groundwater level variations. Subsidence approached 40 per cent of the mine height and continued more than a year after mining. Water levels declined in certain deep-lying strata.

"SWELLING GROUND" delivers pressure on mine timbers that originates in expansion of the wall rock, whereas "heavy ground" delivers only gravitative pressure. Of the several possible causes considered, the swelling is attributed to the physical surface action of water on gouge and flaky rocks at the periphery of the mine opening.

INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY The Kimberley Division of De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited includes four underground mines in Kimberley viz. Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, De Beers and Wesselton Mine and two outside mines, viz. Finsch, an opencast operation and Koffie- fontein, an underground operation. Figure 1 is a map of the Kimberley district showing the location of these mines. Finsch is 150km west of Kimberley and Koffiefontein is 80km south of Kimberley. The head office of the De Beers Company is in Kimberley. The diamond sorting and trading companies for diamonds produced in South Africa are also in Kimberley. Diamonds were first discovered in the Kimberley area at Hopetown in 1866 on the banks of the Orange River. This, and later finds, triggered the start of the great "Diamond Rush". In 1870 the Jagersfontein (now closed) and Dutoitspan pipes were discovered, followed by those at Bultfontein, De Beers and Kimberley Mine (now closed) in 1871, Koffiefontein in 1880 and Wesselton in 1891. Finsch Mine was a more recent discovery in 1961. Finsch, due to go underground in 1986, and Koffiefontein, are fully self-contained with their own treatment plants, housing, services etc. The four Kimberley mines deliver ore by conveyor to a central treatment plant and use joint ser- vices. ,+lining is presently carried out mainly by Block Caving which has replaced the earlier Chambering method. De Beers Mine, on a limited scale, and Wesselton Mine have recently started to use Sub-Level Caving, and both Bultfontein and Du- toitspan are scheduled to use the same method at a later date. The combined ore tonnage produced by the Kimberley Mines is 17 400 tons per day, Koffiefontein 12 000 tons per day and Finsch Mine 17 000 tons per day. THE EVOLUTION OF MINING METHODS Initially, the open-cast mining was carried out to as great a depth as safety would permit. In the early stages of open-cast mining, the Kimberlite was removed in horizontal slices from levels 13m to 20m apart. The rock broken in the workings was raised to the surface by means of endless rope haulage inclines. As lower levels were attained these rope haulages were replaced by aerial hoists, inclined shaft haulages or inclined skip-ways. These methods were dependent upon the strength of the unsupported pipe walls, which became increasingly unstable with depth and a system was adopted whereby the ground mined in open excavations was tipped down passes to tunnels connecting with vertical hoisting shafts sunk in the country rock. As work in the open pit became more and more impracticable due to extensive falls of ground, this system was replaced by a combination of open-cast and underground mining, and eventually by wholly underground methods. Chambering With the advent of underground mining, a system known as "Chambering" (or "Inclined Chambering") was evolved. It was essentially a combination of shrinkage stoping and caving, whereby advantage was taken of the high pressure exerted by the loose rock that had accumulated in the open excavations due to the collapse of the pipe walls. This mining method was introduced around 1890 and was successfully employed, with little change, up to the early nineteen seventies. In this system each mine was served by a main hoisting shaft situated about 300m in the country rock. Main haulage cross cuts were driven from the shaft to the pipe at 200m (600ft) vertical intervals. A sub-vertical shaft, situated close to the pipe provided access to the working levels. Chamber levels were established from the sub-vertical shaft at 13m (40ft) intervals. See figure 2. On each of these levels successive 6,8m wide “cuts" were mined out across the pipe, from one rock contact to the other, and extended vertically to the footwall of the level above. Every 6,8m cut was made up of a chamber and a "back-pillart1, each approximately 3,401 wide. The chamber was mined by overhand shrinkage stoping. The levels were carried "en echelon", with each chamber on a level approximately three cuts ahead of the chamber on the level

Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd.'s Kunitomi Smelter has been treating in the blast furnace copper concentrate containing bismuth. The bismuth is concentrated in the electrostatic precipitator dust and the converter dust. Bismuth contained in the converter dust is leached by a mixture of salt and sulfuric acid, and is then recovered by a cementation process using scrap iron. The bismuth cake thus recovered and the electro- static precipitator dust are reduced to crude bismuth metal which is further refined to a high purity bismuth metal by the pyrometallurgical refining process. Details of this process are elaborated in this report.
