ANGANESE today overshadows all strategic materials in our planning for national se-curity," according to a report issued recently by the American Manganese Producers Association. By far the greater part of the manganese ore used in the United States is imported. "We have enough manganese ore in the United States to last from one hundred to three hundred years and longer, but most of the deposits are undeveloped. As in the case of copper, lead, and zinc, manganese ore, both foreign and domestic are low grade. Manganese ores have to be concentrated and processed. After being processed, domestic ores are higher grade than foreign." Most of the manganese ore found in this country, however, is not amenable to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Manganese Products, Inc. has developed a sulphurous-sulphuric acid leaching process for the recovery of manganese from low-grade, intermediate manganese ores. By the term "intermediate manganese ores" is meant those ores in which the manganese in the form of manganese oxides is found to have two different valences, usually two and four, as is probable in Mn,O, or the ore may be a mixture of manganous and manganic oxides. "Intermediate" manganese siliceous ores are ores in which the silica is a constituent of the ore and is loosely linked to the manganese by water of crystallization. This process has been carried out with the type of manganese ore found in the Olympic Peninsula of western Washington; Clough, N. C.; and Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, as well as just recently with manganese ore from Las Vegas, Nev. As far as the manganese leaching process is concerned, these ores differ primarily in the form in which the manganese oxides occur. The tetravalent manganese, the manganese existing in the dioxide form, is soluble in a sulphurous acid solution. To dissolve the divalent manganese, sulphuric acid is required. To dissolve the type of ore found in Washington and North Carolina, a mixture of both sulphurous and sulphuric acid is used. Whereas to dissolve the type of manganese ore found in Idaho and also in Montana, sulphurous acid alone is sufficient. The Nevada manganese ore is of the same type as that found in Idaho as far as the leaching process is concerned. It has long been known that manganese ores, with the exception of rhodonite, which is a true manganese silicate ore, can be dissolved readily in sulphurous and sulphuric acids.' The removal of the impurities such as silica, iron, and alumina from the resulting solution is the step that has been difficult. The process worked out by Manganese Products has been carried through pilot-plant equipment. This process has also been extended to the production of ammonium sulphate. THE question is often pondered whether the flotation process is still an art or has become a science. The fact is that flotation is a science in so many variables that only art can blend them. It is demonstrable that no less than one hundred variables are involved in any flotation operation, most of them immeasurable on a routine basis. The behavior of every one of them is always governed by orderly and unchanging law, as no man can doubt. There is nothing truly indefinite about that behavior; the only indefiniteness is in our knowledge of it, either in general or from hour to hour in the circuit. In dealing with a simultaneous equation in, say, one hundred variables, all not only affecting the outcome to some degree but many influencing each other as well, it is small wonder that the mineral-dressing profession presents a case history of debate and controversial opinion. The statement of the subject of this symposium-a symposium on flotation machines-seems to delimit and define the matters to be considered and at least the general nature of the conclusions sought. Nevertheless, in such a meeting it is not possible to meditate upon all the variables that do in one way or another affect performance of flotation machines. To attempt it would be much like trying to operate a hundred-ring circus. Perverse variables being what they are, one could expect the elephant in ring 36 to squirt a trunkful of water at the tightrope performer in ring 37 to ruin that artist's act, just as our learning to depress pyrite in the early 1920's ruined the act of the formerly faithful old Callows. HONEST DISAGREEMENTS Selective flotation dates from 1922 or 1923, when several plants established their regular flotation operations on a selective basis. Since then, two decades of efforr have gone into the development of better and better flotation machines. Many have come and gone. The competition has simmered down to perhaps a dozen machines, each one of which is staunchly defended by some operators as being the best for their particular jobs, and as scornfully dismissed by at least a few others elsewhere as being positively the poorest for theirs. These disagreements are honest disagreements, honestly arrived at after plenty of sweat. In many a flotation plant, one machine has been tried out against another under conditions as fair as they could possibly be made. Sometimes the results are on a par but more often one machine shows a consistent and unmistakable margin of superiority over the other. In equally honest and enlightened tests, machine A may win over machine B in one place, and machine B over machine A by as great a margin in another. This paper purposes to identify some of the more prominent reasons why this is so,

Among the many cases of replacement of one mineral by another, that of quartz or silicates by pyrite, or even other sulphides, is not uncommon, but the reverse of this process does not appear to have been recorded, even if it has been observed. The application of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to support the planning, design and analysis of coal mines is discussed. Traditional two-dimensional GIS structures are modified to produce a three- dimensional GIS system that combines the efficient topologic description of a cubic grid cell skeletal structure with the precision surface representation of a Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN). The surface terrain and any subsurface strata, such as a coal seam, are represented by separate TIN'S. Any attribute data to be assigned to the TIN'S are stored in polygon overlays. Any remaining spatial data are stored as link strings or nodes in a global data set. The most valuable application of the system is the production of map products. Both projections and cross-sections of surface or subsurface structures are possible, in either horizontal or vertical planes. Engineering data, including lengths, areas, or volumes, can be calculated.

In view of the extensive use of vanning-machines in this country, a brief comparison of the results obtained by the plain belt generally employed, and the corrugated belt which was introduced a few years ago, may be of interest. The data given below have been abstracted from a working-journal, and hence lack the precision, and also, in several desirable particulars, the detail, which would naturally have been secured in special experiments ; but they have the advantage of being working-figures, and are sufficient as the basis of a fair comparison between the two kinds of belt working on similar ores. THE term Boulder batholith was first applied in 1897 by W. H. Weed'2 to the extensive mass of granite in western Montana within whose borders occur the ore, deposits of Butte. In a general, way this was known to extend from Helena on the north to the Highland Mountains near Butte on the south, and to be relatively narrow in its east-west diameter. Its intrusive relations to the surrounding sedimentary , rocks, and its probable Tertiary age, were described by Weed, but in many ways his statements, based upon incomplete data, have required revision. Most notable of the errors of this description of the batholith were the failure,3 since corrected, to recognize the intrusive contact of the granite with the capping of andesite, and the complete absence of any reference to the many extensions of the granite beyond the somewhat narrow limits of its largest exposure.

One of the most productive iron-ore districts of the southern Appalachians lies in the vicinity of Cartersville, in northwestern Georgia, where the ore-deposits are so directly related to the stratigraphic and structural features of the region that a description of its geology possesses economic as well as scientific interest. Stratigraphy.—The area shown on the accompanying map, Fig. 1, occupies the southeastern portion of Bartow county, Georgia. It is about equally divided between the older crystalline and metamorphic rocks which occupy the Piedmont plateau and Appalachian mountains on the east, and the Paleozoic formations which occupy the Appalachian valley on the west. The line separating these two groups of formations enters the mapped area near the northeastern corner, and, pursuing a somewhat irregular diagonal course, leaves it, as shown on the map, near the southwestern corner. ALTHOUGH everybody is familiar with coal, few persons have an exact idea of, the great impor-tance of this precious fuel. Coal is the black bread of industry. Without it, industrial activity is much restrained; and so the great industrial countries of Europe and the United States of America are the great producers of coal. The 1913 production of coal in Belgium was 22,842,-000 tons, valued at 418,700,000 fr., nearly a half billion. In 1919, it was 18,483,000 tons, about 81 per cent. of the production before the war; in 1920, it had reached 22,414,000 tons, approximately the production before the war. To show the importance of coal production of Belgium, let us say that the coal industry employed 168,000 workers in the year of 1920, the metallurgical industry only 129,000 and the textile industry 103,000. The coal industry, then, employs the greatest number of workers. The value of the coal production in 1919 is estimated at 1,121,000,000 fr. On the basis of the production before the war, the value of the production of iron in 1919 would have been 701,000,000, of finished steel 1,086,000,000, and of zinc 415,000,000; therefore, in 1919 the value of the coal industry was greater than that of the metallurgical production.

At Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd., Japan there are three mills, treating a total of 6400 t/d of lead-zinc Ore. In the lead-zinc bulk differential flotation at Shikama Mill the addition of reagents is automatically controlled by the feed rate, the lead and zinc content in feed, froth and tailing, the pH and the concentration of cyanide ion in the pulp. As the zinc thickener overflow at Shikama Mill contains CU(CN)3--, ZnS, CdS, CN-, xanthate and frother, all the ingredients in the over- flow other than CN are floated by using the Nagahm flotation machine, and the water containing only CN- is effectively recycled to the lead- zinc differential flotation circuit. In the lead-zinc straight differential flotation at Mozumi Mill, the overflow of tailing pond is recycled especially to the cleaning flotation circuit by decreasing the pulp density. Thus the integrated recycling of wastewater greatly reduces environmental problem and in addition, it generates sizeable profit.

The use of interference colors is the simplest experimental way to determine the approximate film thicknesses of oxides formed on liquid metals. A large amount of data under various conditions can be obtained easily and quickly. The oxidation of liquid lead has been studied by several investigators,1-5 but all of these studies have been on thick oxide scales. The purpose of- this work was to investigate the range 0 to 2000A film thickness. By using electron diffraction, Jenkins concluded that the surface of the film on molten lead is yellow orthorhombic PbO with the (110) planes parallel to the surface. This was confirmed by Shimaoka and Yamai7 who also used electron diffraction from the melting point of lead to 730°C. The rate of oxidation of pure liquid lead in air was measured in the temperature range 453" to 643°C by observing the rate of formation of interference colors on static lead baths. Approximately 170 g of lead (99.999 pct) was placed in a refractory dish having a working surface of 13.8 sq cm. This crucible was placed in a deep-well resistance furnace open to the atmosphere. The times at which the various interference colors appeared, after wiping the molten metal surface clean, were determined at 453", 533°, 600°, and 643°C. THE purpose of this paper is to present certain facts relating to Cordilleran differentiation and metallization. Theoretical discussions concerning the exact modus operandi of differentiation, the causes that led up to it, and the original distribution of the magmas have been omitted because the author feels that his knowledge is deficient. These subjects have been adequately treated in the admirable works of Iddings, Daly, Harker, Tyrrell, Shand, and Wolff. The facts here set forth seem to indicate that differentiation and metallization form one continuous process during the eastward movement of the magmas, culminating in the alkaline province of the eastern border of the Cordilleran Ranges.

Uranium was the prima donna of 1978, and the exploration pace was fast and furious in traditional uranium producing areas such as the Powder River Basin, Grants mineral belt, San Juan Basin, and Uravan mineral belt. Adding fuel to the fire were several significant discoveries: The Date Creek Basin of western Arizona, the McDermitt caldera of northern Nevada, and Tallahassee Creek in Colorado's intermontane basin. Advances in solution mining haw resulted in deeper drilling on the Texas Coastal Plain, and the price of uranium has encouraged widespread exploration in frontier areas and non-sandstone environments.

"When l hear - I normally remember 10 percent When I hear and see - I can remember 15 to 25 percent When I hear, see, and do - I usually remember up to 50 percent" While this is not a truism in relation to each and every individual; on the average, this is the case. If we use this as a premise in training operator and maintenance personnel, then it must be obvious that we can't rely on a mere presentation, even one which includes the needed classroom participation and/or hands on work, to do a thorough job and to make this personnel totally proficient - 100 percent proficient. We have to have some other device some other means to make this a continuing process, a process wherein the people can grow in knowledge while performing their normal duties. We have to feel that the words "normal duties" are the key to the whole program. If you would ask a crusher operator what his duty is, he might say "To run this crusher so that we produce 250 tons per hour of a minus 13mm (minus 1/2 ") product." A maintenance man could say "To fix the unit when there is a problem." Both of these answers are legitimate but, they are only a part of the total picture. In order for each of these individuals to do the best job, he must know not just the specifics about the machine he works with or on - he must know the interrelation of all the machinery in the crushing circuit - how the efficiency of each machine affects the others - why a minor problem on one piece of equipment can generate a major problem for another unit which follows it or precedes it. In short, you cannot separate machine operation and maintenance from the application of the equipment in the crushing circuit - and obtaining this knowledge must be a part of the normal duty of crushing plant personnel. As an example a crusher - any crusher - is designed to crush oversize material. It is not designed to accept feed which is already at or less than the required product size. If sized material goes to the crusher, increase wear results by using the crusher as a chute or the crushing chamber can be clogged up with the fines. This latter point is particularly true with cone crushers, especially in the third (Short Head) stage of crushing. When a Gyradisc is used (fourth stage crushing) it is even more critical that the product be removed before the material goes to the crusher. The crusher cannot control this - the screen ahead of the crusher does. The screen must be of adequate size and be functioning properly to allow the crusher to work at optimum. Screening is both an art and a science. Since there are so many variables which affect the output of the screen, it is always best to have a screen which is larger than the sizing calculations dictate. The screens are the most important elements in the circuit. Without screens, specification materials cannot be made and the size of the screen will ultimately aid or hinder your ability to get the most production possible out of the plant.
