INTRODUCTION Before an understandable discussion concerning coal dewatering processes can be initiated, it is necessary to define some terms of usage. The many different meanings and interpretations of terms preclude development of standard definitions so the terms defined in this chapter should be regarded primarily as working terms intended to facilitate communication.

THE five serpentine masses exposed within the northern half of Riley County, Fig. 1, constitute a major part of the few exposures of igneous rock in Kansas.' Although not many subsurface data are available for this part of Riley County,2 six deep wellsV indicate that the basement complex lies between 2500 and 3000 ft below the earth's surface. A northwestward-trending ridge in the present basement surface, which extends across the northern half of Riley County, is indicated on Mettner's contour map.' The serpentine masses lie in a region that was active during Pennsylvanian and Permian time along two main tectonic trends, which may, in part at least, have developed contemporaneously." One trend is northeasterly, as evidenced by the Nemaha anticline, the Abilene anticline, the Voshell anticline, and many other smaller northeastward-trending folds. The other trend is northwesterly, as evidenced by the central Kansas uplift, the Salina basin syncline, and smaller northwestward-trending folds. The area of the Abilene anticline was actively deformed during much of this time, and the present surface rocks, for the most part Permian in age, show many normal faults." The Bala and Leonardville intrusions lie within a mile of the axis of the Abilene anticline, Fig. 1, as mapped by Wallace Lee;' the Randolph No. 1 and Randolph No. 2 intrusions lie within about 5 miles of the axis; and the Stockdale intrusion lies within about 8 miles of the axis. The igneous rocks have intruded horizontal or gently dipping limestones and shales that are late Permian in age.V he period of intrusion, according to Moore and Landes, was probably Cretaceous.' At present a detailed description of the petrography is available for only the Bala intrusion. Moore and Haynes' describe the rock at Bala as a green, serpentinized, porphyritic, peridotite breccia containing inclusions of shale. The ground mass consists chiefly of serpentine and calcite with considerable chromite (5 to 10 pct) and some magnetite. The phenocrysts consist principally of altered olivine with some altered augite and biotite. Although probably different in petrographic details, all the serpentine masses are somewhat similar in that 1) they consist of a dark green, fine-grained ground mass of igneous rock containing many xeno-liths composed of fragments of the neighboring sedimentary rock; 2) they tend to form small mounds on the landscape, thus indicating their greater resistance to weathering and erosion; and 3) they are magnetic. Previous Magnetic Survey of the Bala Intrusion: To the writer's knowledge, only the Bala intrusion had been surveyed with a magnetometer prior to the magnetic surveys discussed in this paper. THE shutdown of Homestake by Government order L-208, with its consequent disruption of a very stable and trained working force, coupled with postwar inflation and the coincidence that a mining depth had been reached that posed problems of ventilation, access to exploration areas, and choice of mining methods that would be applicable to zones of greater rock pressures made a very searching analysis of every phase of Homestake's operations a necessity. Any changes to be made had not only to meet the problems of deeper mining but also had to provide greater efficiency so that the mine might operate at a substantial profit until such time as a gold price adjustment might be forthcoming that would offset post-1945 inflation.

THE experiments described in this paper constitute the preliminary work of an investigation outlined to determine the combined effects of steam and temperature on the endurance properties of certain steels. Essentially of a fundamental nature, it was found necessary, in order to make the investigation comprehensive, to test materials treated to give a wide range of properties. The work reported deals chiefly with nickel steel with one series of tests including nitriding steel. Such a study involves numerous variables, and requires an endurance-testing machine of rather special design.

The classification here used is one of convenience only; it is not intended to include all known types of ore deposits. The characteristic features of the several well-marked types of primary mineralizations are described without reference to the ultimate source of their metals. The minerals of many deposits of obscure origin were probably introduced through fissures that are now healed, or are due to the migration of metals from such deposits. [ ] It is not within the scope of this book to enter into a general discussion of the genesis of ore deposits but, in view of the progress being made in our comprehension of the conditions under which ore deposits were formed, mention should be made of recent work. J. E. Spurr's two volumes, "The Ore Magmas," are recommended as crystallizing the views of those who are inclined to ascribe the origin of most ore deposits to a differential precipitation from magmatic rock masses and to the migration and precipitation of the viscous, liquid or gaseous exhalations from those masses. I. INTRODUCTION. THE superficial alteration of ore-deposits is a recognized principle of geology, in the same way as is the superficial alteration of any of the common rocks. Its importance in some classes of ore-deposits is also well understood, as in many precious-metal deposits; while in other classes, its importance has been proved in individual cases, as in the Lake Superior iron-deposits. The causes and effects of superficial alteration in many classes of deposits, however, are not so generally understood; and it is the object of the present paper to show that such changes almost invariably give rise to exceedingly important chemical and physical phenomena, while in many deposits, the question as to whether they can or cannot be profitably worked depends largely on the extent and character of this alteration. The various treatises on ore-deposits published in the United States and Europe make frequent mention of superficial alteration, but have not treated the subject fully. As early as 1554, however, before which time but little accurate information was had on the geologic nature of ore-deposits, Prof. J. D. Whitney in his classic volume, The Metallic Wealth of the United States, describes the alteration-products, or gossans, in certain deposits and mentions others. On the more purely chemical side of the question, the work of Bischof, Daubrée, Roth, Rose, Hunt, Breithaupt, Blum, Julien, Deville, Debray, Volger, Moissan, Fremy, Lévy, Fouqué, and others has afforded much valuable information and many useful suggestions. ABOUT fifty pages of Henry M. Howe's profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neumann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211}. Attempt's to develop the structure of the bands by various methods so that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent. of nickel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2 was reproduced in. the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form {211}. Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form {211} as sketched in Fig. 2.

Experiments in laboratory and mine have clearly demonstrated the usefulness of radioactivity detection for directly measuring the potassium content of potash ore as mined. This paper presents the results of these tests and documents the design of a system for automatically grading and sorting potash ore on the basis of radiation detection. It is shown how the experimental results in the subject mine lead directly to the design of this kind of an automatic control system. The system is capable of grading the ore with an accuracy of approximately ±2% K20 content or better. Due to the usual stratification of the ore body, mining potash seldom presents an extreme problem of gangue separation. Nevertheless, it is frequently necessary to transport within a potash mine and even hoist to the surface considerable quantities of halite and other valueless materials. Up to recent times it has been customary to recognize and route these materials by simple visual and manual techniques. However, the work reported here clearly demonstrates that it is now practical and economical to improve upon these techniques by continuous measurement1 of the naturally occurring radioactive isotope, potassium-40. It was the purpose of the work reported here to investigate this technique and assess its applicability. LOCALE OF EXPERIMENTS The work described here was carried out in a potash mine in Carlsbad, N.M. At the working face of this mine the potash ore is freed by blasting; it is then transported a short distance by shuttle car to a moving-belt system which conveys it to the main shaft where it is hoisted to the surface. Quantities of gangue which are also produced in the mining operation are disposed of in mined-out sections of the mine where possible. Otherwise, this material which contains only a small percentage of potassium (as K2O) must also be transported by the conveyor-belt system to the main shaft and then hoisted to the surface and discarded. With this situation, any measuring device for automatic control purposes must be capable of clearly distinguishing between gangue containing insignificant amounts of K2O and ore containing larger percentages of the same mineral. The conveyor-belt system transports the material from the mine face to a rotary crusher and then to temporary storage pits at the main shaft. This is shown in Fig. 1. Upon leaving the conveyor belt the material enters either one of the two storage pits according to the position of a manually operated gate. It was decided that all experiments should be carried out at the conveyor belt between the crusher and gate with a view to the possibility of providing a signal which could operate the gate automatically. THEORETICAL BASIS AND LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS In principle it is possible to grade potassium-bearing ore on the basis of radioactivity. Natural potassium contains 0.012% K40, which is radioactive with a half-life of 1.3 x 10' years. Although about 89% of the K40 disintegrates to Ca40 by beta decay, the other 11% changes to Ar40 by electron capture and the emission of gamma rays. Unlike the ß-rays which are readily absorbed in the first few millimeters of ore surrounding the disintegrating nucleus, the y-ray photons will escape from an ore sample several inches in size. A detector rigidly mounted under a conveyor belt loaded with potash ore will intercept some constant fraction of all the photons emitted from the ore within its field of view. Under these

The history of the South Lorrain mining camp is given and comparisons are made between the local topography and general geology and that of the Cobalt camp. The character of the silver-bearing veins and their analogy to those of Cobalt are given and the theory regarding the cause of the deep seated oxidation in South Lorrain, particularly at the Keeley Mine, is outlined. The oreshoots are described, also the conditions governing their occurrence and position. The mining and metallurgical practice are briefly considered. IN THE numerous districts subsidiary to Cobalt, and carrying mineral deposits similar in character to that world-famous mining camp, the most interesting recent developments have occurred in South Lorrain. The district, the center of which lies about 16 miles southeast of Cobalt, was the scene of a rush in 1907 but, in spite of the success of the Wettlauffer mine, the locality soon lost its popularity, largely on account of the unsavory early history of the Keeley mine. In recent years, following the successful development of this property by the London operators, who acquired it from the liquidator of the original company, and the later conspicuous progress made on the properties of the Mining Corporation contiguous to the Keeley on the north, the district has again come into prominence and, at present, is doing much toward maintaining the gradually declining production of Cobalt itself. Apart from the Mining Corporation of Canada and the Keeley Silver Mines Limited, the principal concerns now operating in South Lorrain are the Lorrain Consolidated, the Trout Lake Mines (operated by English interests associated with the Mining Corporation) and the Canadian Lorrain Silver Mines (operated by the Huronian Belt Co., of London). A number of minor prospects are also active. The Wettlaufer and Currie, on both of which considerable work was done some years ago, are now closed.

THE consensus of opinion in the published literature on. Grecian magnesite is that it has been formed by alteration of the serpentine, which in turn was itself a product, of metamorphism from the original olivine intrusion. The general opinion seems to be that the magnesite was formed by descending waters heavily charged with CO2. Inasmuch as this opinion is held by engineers far better qualified than I to speak authoritatively on this subject, I hesitate to dispute that theory. However, certain occurrences coming under my observation do not, to me at least, seem to-entirely substantiate this theory. LOCATION Most of the Grecian magnesite comes from the Island of Euboea, although more recently some deposits have been opened on the mainland near the City of Saloniki, which prior to the war was Turkish. The island, comprising a state or province in the Greek political structure, is roughly 110 miles long and varies from 10 to 30 miles in width. It lies off the east coast of the Greek peninsula in the AEgean Sea with its long axis extending in a northwest-southeast direction. It is separated from the mainland by a long narrow arm of the sea known as the Atalanti Canal. Chalkis (Halkis), the capital on the west coast of the island, is the northern terminus of a branch of the state-owned railway and is connected with the mainland by a single-span, movable, highway bridge, roughly 150 ft. long.

Vague references to tin-deposits in Mexico are scattered throughout technical literature, and that country has been looked to as a likely source of a part of the world's supply of till at no very distant date; but thus far nothing but occasional small lots have come forward, so that the notion has arisen that these mines are either mythical or unworkable. So far as I am aware, there has not yet been published any description of the tin-deposits of Mexico except a few brief references; and this paper, based on a study of them made in 1892, is therefore offered.

THE correct sampling of coal and coke is becoming important to an ever increasing number of producers and consumers. This, therefore, may be an opportune moment to examine where we stand with regard to existing and proposed methods. In this paper an attempt will be made to review, as briefly as possible, some of the considerable amount of painstaking research which has been done in the last 10 years, and which has unquestionably led to a much better understanding of the subject. In so doing we shall try, on the one hand, to make clear where substantial progress has been made, and on the other hand, to draw attention to points that require further investigation. The paper is divided into sections in order to emphasize the major divisions of the subject; further, in order to retain this emphasis, detailed consideration of some of the points has been relegated to appendixes. No attempt has been made to give a complete survey of the literature, as this has already been done by L. A. Bushell.2 The following abbrevia-tions will be used: A.E., average error; P.E., probable error; S.W.R., size-weight ratio; B.S.I., British Standards Institution.

IN the field of mineral exploration, 1956 can be looked upon as the International Geochemical Year. This is not because of unusual developments in geochemical prospecting but rather because of the world-wide effort in geochemistry and the realization that geochemistry is now an established exploration method. Use of mining geophysics has continued to increase. Those extensively employing exploration techniques indicate that developments of the past few years have permitted better programming of methods, from reconnaissance to location of drill- holes. There is greater diversification of methods- reliance is not placed on results of one. However, it is realized that often it is more economical to drill an anomaly than to conduct additional expensive geophysical surveys

AS IS evident from the discussion in previous chapters, the methods by which an open-hearth heat may be made are numerous, but any heat, in the ingot form, may be classified as one of three types, depending upon the degree of deoxidation to which the metal is subjected. These are rimmed, semikilled, and killed, and desirable ingot structures, from the standpoint of distribution of porosity, are illustrated in Fig. 63. These are the most useful types of ingot structure [ ] and represent three stages in the continuous series from "wild" to "dead killed" (see Fig. 23, page 46) ; some of the variations of each type are discussed later in the chapter. The choice of ingot structure and of finishing practice used to produce the desired metal action in the molds is determined by consideration of: 1. Specified final analysis. As an example, the production of rimmed steels is mostly limited to carbon contents below 0.30 per cent and manganese contents below 0.60 per cent; on the other hand the production of low-carbon killed steel requires greater care.

Rock mechanics research was carried out in the Anvil Points mine, Rifle, Colo., in the period 1964-1968, with the dual purpose of providing oil shale to the retorts of six major oil companies and to perform research on mining cycle operations to maximize extraction under safe conditions. An 80% extraction ratio within the mining area proved feasible. Test results provided data on optimum pillar and roof design. Studies of mine orientation showed that the mining headings should take into account the prevailing joint patterns and also the directions of the principal in-situ stresses acting in the region.
