COROMANT is the trade name of the alloy-steel drill rod tipped with a chisel-type tungsten-carbide bit manufactured by Sandvik Steel Works Co., Ltd. Other names, such as Swedish or air-leg method of drilling, are used in various localities. Coromant drilling in Sweden was the natural sequence of the adaptation of tungsten-carbide inserts to the already established routine of drilling. By the middle thirties the percussion drill had reached practically its highest attainable efficiency as a drilling machine. Since then improvement has been in metallurgy of component parts to increase life or lessen weight, in the development of pneumatic and automatic feeds, in the use of jumbos to more quickly and easily handle machines, and in changes in drill rods and bits. By 1937, drilling in the United States and Canada was done by relatively heavy mounted drifters with positive hand or automatic feeds. In Sweden, on the other hand, emphasis had been placed on light equipment and drifting was done with pneumatic bars and reverse-feed stopers. In 1938, one of the most prominent American drill manufacturers developed an air-leg for successfully drilling the extremely variable but relatively soft iron ores of some of the northern Michigan mines. Also in 1938, a comparative Swedish test, also in soft iron ore, of a 50-lb jackhammer mounted on an air-leg, against a 100-lb reverse-feed drifter on a pneumatic bar, showed the net drilling time was increased by the air-leg set-up from 51 to 71 pct, in drilling 6-ft rounds in a 6 1/2x6 1/2 ft drift. Miners were becoming scarce in Sweden even at that time and, since the lighter equipment made the work easier and more attractive, the airleg was then made use of in some types of soft rock. In 1940, for instance, a large tunnel for a hydroelectric plant was driven with this equipment. By 1943, when tungsten-carbide inserts came into the picture in Sweden, a great many of the kinks in percussion drilling with this hard-metal had been worked out in Germany under the stress of war conditions. However, only 10 pct of the drilling machines manufactured in Sweden were jackhammers for use on air-legs and only the one manufacturer made air-legs in the United States. American practice had largely supplanted integral forging of drill bits by the detachable steel bit. Canada and South Africa were using the one-pass throwaway bit but Sweden was still using the same old integral forged bit. After a long study of the trend toward simplicity

IN a previous paper§ the authors reported on the mechanical properties of a 65 per cent copper, 10 per cent manganese, 25 per cent zinc alloy as compared with similarly processed cartridge brass. Additional investigations by these laboratories, on higher copper alloys, have demonstrated that at lower zinc concentrations even larger amounts of pure manganese may be added to copper-zinc alloys without exceeding the single-phase solid solution limits, and that similar increases in tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness may be obtained without excessive decreases in ductility. Several compositions in this range showed also a decided color change with increasing manganese. The normal "brassy" color was considerably lightened and reduced to a faint yellow cast at 15 per cent manganese. With higher manganese contents the alloys were essentially white and similar in appearance to the nickel-silver alloys. From this work it appeared that it would be desirable to determine more completely the properties of the wrought and annealed white alloys. Accordingly, a more detailed study was planned of an alloy having the composition 70 per cent copper, 20 per cent manganese, and 10 per cent zinc. This alloy remained single-phase throughout the working and annealing cycles of the preliminary tests and appeared to be about the strongest of the white single-phase alloys. The project included also an investigation of additional alloys, deviating from this composition by 5 per cent of each of the three components to evaluate the effects of variation in composition; also a study of the properties of the central alloy made with silicothermic manganese. MATERIAL PREPARATION Electrolytic manganese, wirebar copper, and electrolytic zinc were used for the preparation of the alloys. Representative analysis of the electrolytic manganese seldom exceeds 0.01 per cent iron, 0.02 per cent sulphur and 0.02 per cent lead, with no silicon or aluminum. A typical sample of the silicothermic manganese metal contained 2 per cent iron, 0.81 per cent silicon, 0.i6 per cent carbon, and 0.36 per cent aluminum. Melting and alloying were performed in a high-frequency furnace with magnesia crucibles. Melts were deoxidized with small aluminum additions and cast into 25-lb. slab ingots. Care was exercised in deoxidation to avoid excessive amounts of residual aluminum, which has been found to have significant effects on alloys in this system. Geostatistics originated as an application of a classical statistical concept, multivariate linear regression, to the solution of a practical problem, estimation of reserves in the South African gold mines. In this respect, geostatistics should only be considered as one statistical method among many that can be used to evaluate mineral deposits. R.F. Shurtz has studied possible applications of power spectrum analysis to the same problem, and these studies may result in future improvements over the presently accepted geostatistical methodology. The intention of R.F. Shurtz's paper, as stated by the author, is to "relate geostatistical doctrine to classical statistical and mathematical concepts." However, in this comparison the "geostatistical doctrine" appears to include only the simplest among the geostatistical concepts advocated by G. Matheron, while "classical statistical and mathematical concepts" are limited nearly exclusively to power spectrum analysis. The author attempts to compare the two methods, and to prove the theoretical superiority of power spectrum analysis. Unfortunately, a number of errors and incorrect statements are made concerning both the theory and application of geostatistics, which invalidate the comparison and the conclusions drawn from it. The errors made in this comparison are understandable since few scientists can claim to have expertise in two theories as diverse as those compared here. In many respects, this paper is reminiscent of polemics which occurred 15 to 20 years ago when geostatistics and trend surface analysis were compared. Each method has its own merit and limitations, and none can claim absolute superiority. The most misleading statements found in R.F. Shurtz's paper are: The definition of the semivariogram given on page 1923 is incorrect. If the maximum difference between two assays is 1, the maximum value of the semivariogram is not 1, as stated, but 0.5. The comparison of geostatistics and linear regression made in the section entitled "Insufficiency of Classical Statistics?" is not valid. The semivariogram of the sample values given in Table 1 (page 1919) has a parabolic shape indicative of a linear drift. When such a semivariogram is observed, the simplest method of geostatistical estimation (linear kriging with unknown mean) is not applicable. Universal kriging must be used that takes trends into account. On page 1921 it is stated that the use of trends "is officially disparaged in geostatistics." Again on page 1924 mention is made to "Matheron's commitment to random process (intrinsic) models and his present categorical rejection of deterministic (trend) models for mineral deposit evaluation." Indeed, from articles published by geostatisticians in the 1960s one could infer that geostatistical methods are not compatible with the presence of trends. However, even the simplest

THE Whale Lode occurs in the main range of the Rocky Mountains, Park County, Colorado Territory, at Hall Valley. It has been opened up and worked to some extent by the Whale Mine, situated some 11,300 feet above the level of the sea. The mine, with 700 feet of the lode on either side of the discovery shaft, is the property of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company. The adjacent country rock is a compact, fine-grained gneiss ; its general strike is about north and south, dipping steeply to the west. In the immediate vicinity of the mine, the strata are very nearly vertical. The gneiss incloses numberless veins of a reddish granite, in which the feldspar largely predominates over the quartz and mica, the latter oftentimes being scarcely perceptible. As a general rule these granitic veins seem to more frequently follow the lines of stratification of the gneiss than otherwise. They are of varying width, some large, some small; the larger are from 5 to 6 feet wide. Gash veins of feldspar and quartz are also of very fre¬quent occurrence. The general trend of the lode is about northeast and southwest, intersecting the country rock at about an angle of 45° to its stratification. It dips to the northwest at an angle of 65°. I am unable to state accurately how far this lode has been traced upon the surface, but it is at least well known to extend entirely through the mountain upon which the mine is situated, and is traceable over the ridge by a hollow extending for some distance along the surface, in which the lode crops out. This hollow in the surface rock has probably been formed through decomposition of the vein matter by atmospherical influences. The width of the crevice is variable, generally between 5 and 10 feet; the pay vein varies from an inch, or less, to 36 inches. The vein is generally accompanied both on foot and hanging walls by a whitish, semi-decomposed rock, composed of quartz and decomposed feldspar, and in some places-where the process of decomposition has not reached as advanced a stage-a light-greenish or black mica. This rock, therefore, is in places composed of all the constituents of gneiss, and is undoubtedly nothing more or less than the same in a decomposed condition. THE Omaha District, Corps of Engineers, has been doing subsurface exploration work for a number of years, both by contract and with its own forces. Certain practices and procedures concerning the recovery of large diameter cores have been developed which will be described in this paper. GEOLOGY Most of the drilling to date has been in connection with structures on the main stem of the Missouri River above Sioux City, Iowa. A wide variety of subsurface conditions has been encountered. The bedrock formations appear in regular order from the oldest to the youngest, traveling upstream; or in other words, the general regional dip is to the northwest. The oldest formation is the Carlile shale, a compaction or noncemented waxy shale of Cretaceous age. Because of its uncemented, soft nature this shale has a tendency to grind or wash away when drilled. It also has a tendency to rebound or expand when the overlying pressures are removed. A 25-ft bed of sharp, friable sandstone called the Codell member is present near the top of the Carlile shale. This member is a cemented sediment, but in drilling, many of the sand grains are broken loose and exert extensive abrasive action on the core barrel and bit. Above the Carlile shale is the Niobrara chalk, a soft calcareous deposit with shaly horizons and some thin beds of bentonitic clay. The average thickness of this deposit is about 145 ft. It is soft enough to be sawed or bored with ordinary woodworking tools, yet is compact enough to be used as building block. The Pierre shale, the formation above the Niobrara chalk, is over 800 ft in thickness and is the most widespread material in the area. It is a dark colored, compaction shale containing numerous thin bentonitic clay seams and at certain horizons, hard manganese concretions. The shale has numerous faults and in addition, along the valley walls, has undergone considerable - slumping. Joints, fault planes and slickensided surfaces are common features encountered in drilling and add to the difficulties of high core recovery. East of the Missouri River the bedrock is generally covered with from 100 to 200 ft of glacial till, composed of clays, silts, sands, gravels and boulders. The valley itself is filled with alluvial deposits, mostly of the sand and gravel sizes, and contains a buried preglacial or interglacial channel over 100 ft in depth. The overburden deposits require sampling in connection with engineering studies and must also be cased before the underlying bedrock can be cored. The diameter of the required overburden samples can thus have an indirect effect on the size of core recovered from the bedrock. The Getchell mine, a comparatively recent gold discovery, is in the old Potosi mining district, Humboldt County, Nevada. All ore is mined from open pits using Diesel shovels and gasoline trucks. Two types of ore are mined, oxide and sulphide. Oxide ores are siliceous or shaly; sulphide ores either gougy, siliceous or shaly. In mining, the sulphide ore is segregated into hard and gougy ore, because the gouge must be dried before it can be crushed. The oxide ore is not segregated. General Metallurgy The oxide ore is the leached outcrop that overlies the sulphide ore body. All of the iron and arsenic sulphides found in the sulphide ores have been thoroughly oxidized. The sulphur and arsenic have been leached out while the iron is present as hematite and limonite. The oxide ore is amenable to direct cyanidation, and although no visible free gold is present it is released at a comparatively coarse grind. The sulphide ore is more refractory, since the gold is all of micron size and some of it is locked in fine sulphides. It has been established microscopically that the free gold is coated with an impervious shell, which is probably some form of iron compound. The sulphide ores contain from 1.5 to 2 per cent of arsenic, which is present as orpiment and realgar with minor amounts of arsenopyrite. The orpiment and realgar are of a later mineralization than the gold and are barren. Roasting and washing of the sulphide ore prior to cyanidation is necessary to eliminate , the arsenic, to alter the gold coating from an insoluble form to a soluble form, and to release the gold associated with the fine sulphides. Washing the ground calcine in weak sulphuric acid, trona, or hot water are beneficial in the order named, but to date the water is the best from an economic standpoint. Metallurgical tests as well as plant practice indicate that a certain amount of gold cannot be recovered even by going beyond economic practices. On this basis metallurgical results are viewed in the light of an optimum tailing rather than a percentage of extraction. Milling Practice Crushing (Fig. I).—There are three primary ore bins, one each for oxide ore, gougy sulphide ore, and hard sulphide ore. In front of each bin a substantial yard is maintained, which makes it possible to Stockpile 2500 tons of oxidized ore, 1000 tons of hard sulphide ore, and 1000 tons of gougy sulphide ore. This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplishing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowledge the very great willingness of these outstanding scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is possible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydrocarbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to complete an analysis. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis. The Mass Spectrometer The mass spectrometer should not be confused in any way with the optical 01 grating type of spectrograph now in general use. The operation of the mass spectrometer is entirely different in principle and bears practically no resemblance to the optical or grating instruments. The original conception and development of the mass spectrometer dates from and is generally credited to Aston, of Cambridge, England. An early accomplishment of his research, about 20 years ago, was the discovery that the inert gas neon was actually a mixture of two kinds of atoms, one of the atomic weight 20 and the other of atomic weight 22. These two components occurred mixed in such proportion as to yield the usual atomic weight of 20.2. A speiss is an artificial arsenide, sometimes an antimonide, formed in lead smelting, smelting of oxide copper ores, and in some lead-refining operations. The production of speiss is closely allied with the amount of arsenic and metallic iron in the blast-furnace charge, while dross is produced mostly from the copper and sulphur, with varying amounts of antimony, arsenic and nickel. Most speiss is essentially an iron arsenide containing some sulphur, copper and nickel, if these elements are present in the furnace. The recent introduction of the soda treatment of lead drosses has produced a speiss high in copper. Speiss is not miscible to any extent with molten copper, lead, matte or slag. Miscibility increases with temperature. This property of the speiss is clarified in the latter part of this paper. Most speisses are produced in conjunction with matte and their sulphur content points to the solubility of matte in speiss. . Some plants have insufficient speiss to warrant separate treatment. When arsenic is high in the blast-furllace charge, there may be sufficient speiss to tap separately from the first settler. Arsenic From the foregoing, it is obvious that a study of the treatment of speiss would not ,be complete without consideration of arsenic. Inasmuch as perhaps go per cent of the blast-furnace feed may be sinter, a definite knowledge of the properties of arsenical ores and compounds that go in to the roaster and sinter feeds is of value. Lcad smelters obtain their arsenic from ores and concentrates, as well as from flue dusts shipped from other plants, particularly copper smelters. The percentage of arsenic in ores is usually low, although occasional lots of high arsenical products are smelted. These crude ores may be sulphides, as arsenopyrite; or oxides like scoiodite, which carry gold or lead minerals. The small amount of arsenic in the original ores received is greatly increased by a circulating load of arsenic in secondary products at are resmelted for their lead or precious metals. More important than the arsenic present directly in the concentrates treated is that in fumes and dusts that may originate in the blast furnace or sinter plant of the lead smelter, or may come from a copper smelter as lead-bearing converter fume or roaster dust. Thus the lead smelter not only must treat its own arsenic but is compelled to handie that from some copper and perhaps other lead plants. Where copper and lead plants exchange products, each plant may be forced to re-treat part of the arsenic it has shipped ,outside its own confines. Speiss from the lead blast furnace contains chiefly iron and arsenic with some lead, copper and sulphur and often appreciable amounts of gold and silver. If its copper content is sufficient this speiss may be sent to the copper smelter where usually it is treated in the converter and the copper is separated as blister. The effects of various antifreeze agents on the formation of hydrogen sulphide hydrate have been studied. On a molar basis the relative lowering of Tm (the maximum temperature at which solid hydrogen sulphide hydrate can exist in equilibrium with the given solution) for the various agents is: sodium chloride 1.00, calcium chloride 1.71, methyl alcohol 0.57, ethyl alcohol 0.68, ethylene glycol 0.73, diethylene glycol 0.73, sucrose 0.87, dextrose 0.71. On a weight basis the relative lowering of TM is: sodium chloride 1.00, calcium chloride 0.91, methyl alcohol 1.08, ethyl alcohol 0.89, ethylene glycol 0.69, diethylene glycol 0.41, dextrose 0.23, and sucrose 0.15. Introduction The solid hydrate of hydrogen sulphide, H2S.6H20,1 is in equilibrium with water and liquid hydrogen sulphide at 85°F at a partial pressure of hydrogen sulphide approximately equal to the vapor pressure Of hydrogen sulphide at that temperature. At temperatures below 85°F, in the presence Of excess hydrogen sulphide (greater than the amount required to react with the water present) the hydrate is in equilibrium with liquid hydrogen sulphide at approximately the vapor pressure Of hydrogen sulphide. In the presence of excess water, the solid hydrate is in equilibrium with liquid water, containing dissolved hydrogen sulphide, at a pressure lower than the vapor pressure of liquid hydrogen sulphide at the same temperat~re.2 The lower the temperature, the greater the difference between the decomposition pressure of the hydrate and the vapor pressure of liquid hydrogen sulphide at that temperature. Conditions conducive to the formation of solid hydrogen sulphide hydrate may exist in wells producing a gas containing a high percentage of hydrogen sulphide under high pressure, or in the lead lines from such wells. This paper gives the results of tests made with various antifreeze agents which might be useful in decomposing the hydrate or in preventing the formation of the hydrate of hydrogen sulphide Apparatus Fig , shows a diagram of the apparatus used. The sample under observation was contained in a glass tube 34 cm long, having a 6 mm id and a wall thickness of 2.5 mm. The lower end of this tube was closed- with a plug of butyl rubber. The upper end of the tube was connected to a diaphragm gauge, with a stainless steel diaphragm, a manometer, a vacuum pump, and a cylinder of hydrogen sulphide, The tube was held nearly horizontal, with the liquid resting along the lower side of the tube. It was found that when the tube was held in a vertical position, it broke with ex. plosive violence as soon as it became filled with solid hydrate. Presumably this was caused by the expansion which occurred on solidification of the hydrate. The difficulty disappeared when the tube was held in an inclined position during the tests.

Mines are valued from necessity, for the following reasons: (a) Transfers of titles. (b) Dissolutions of partnerships or corporations. (c) Mergers of mining companies. (d) Appraisals for the purpose of State and Federal taxation. (e) Establishment of the fact of worth as a basis of loans. (f) Determination of values as frequently required in litigation. (g) Listing of stock for sale by a reputable stock exchange. For the majority of purposes a valuation is required as at the present time, but for some purposes valuations as of bygone times may more nearly reflect the intrinsic worth of a mine because its subsequent history can never be, entirely ignored, but valuations made as at the present time are better indicators of cash values. Many mines with great intrinsic worth have been sold for small cash prices. The object of legitimate mine valuations is to deter-mine salable value, or that price in cash at which a transfer of the property from a willing seller to a willing buyer might be consummated, assuming that both vendor and vendee have knowledge of all pertinent data and that the owner, is not forced to sell at a sacri-fice-the definitions of fair market value precluding a forced sale.

TAX TREATMENT OF EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT EXPENSES Exploration Expenditures General Principles. Exploration expenditures are expenses incurred within the United States or the Outer Continental Shelf for the purpose of ascertaining the existence, location, extent or quality of any deposit of ore or other mineral. Section 617 of the Internal Revenue Code permits a taxpayer to elect to deduct these expenditures currently. In default of election, exploration expenditures must be capitalized and included in the basis of the mineral property for purposes of determining cost depletion. Entitlement to Deduction. In order to qualify for current deduction, exploration expenditures must be incurred prior to the commencement of the development stage, i.e., when mineral deposits are shown to exist in sufficient quantity and quality to reasonably justify commercial exploitation. Generally, expenditures for geological and geophysical investigations, reconnaissance, surveying, testpitting, trenching, drilling, driving of exploration tunnels and adits and similar types of work constitute exploration expenditures if incurred prior to the commencement of development. However, expenditures to further delineate the extent and location of an existing commercially marketable deposit are not exploration expenditures. Exploration expenditures may be incurred from within a producing mine to ascertain the existence of what appears to be a different ore deposit. Expenditures for property which is subject to an allowance for depreciation are not deductible under §617. However, depreciation properly allowable on assets used in exploration is an exploration expenditure. Election to Deduct Exploration Expenditures. The election to deduct exploration expenditures is made by deducting these expenditures in the return for the first taxable year for which such treatment is desired. The election applies to all properties of the taxpayer. Once the election is made all exploration expenditures, in the year of election and thereafter, must be deducted, unless the election is revoked with the prior consent of the Commissioner. The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982 (TEFRA) made substantial changes in the treatment of exploration expenditures. For exploration expenses incurred after 1982 and before 1984 by a corporation, the amount currently deductible is limited to 85% of the expenditure. The remaining 15% must be capitalized and recovered over a five-year period. Although exploration costs capitalized under this provision are not part of the basis of the property for cost depletion purposes, investment credit may be claimed with respect to these expenditures. Further changes have been added by the Tax Reform Act of 1984 with respect to expenditures made after 1984. The Act reduces the amount of otherwise currently deductible costs from 85% to 80%. Additionally, it limits the availability of the investment credit for capitalized mineral exploration costs to deposits located in the United States. TEFRA also allows individuals a special method of recovery under which exploration expenditures may, at the election of the taxpayer, be amortized ratably over a 10-year period beginning with the year in which the costs are paid or incurred. If taxpayer does not use this method, the excess of the exploration expenditures actually deducted over the amount that would have been deducted if 10 year amortization had been elected is an item of tax preference subject to the alternative minimum tax.

The title of this study may fairly lead to misunderstanding unless its basal viewpoint is explained at the start. There is of course no chance of misunderstanding the term strategic minerals-for some years past it has been rather generally used to cover those mineral supplies, important for war use, which do not occur in adequate amount on the territory of the Power under consideration. Even here, however, I might add a note of warning. It is commonly understood that the list of strategic minerals will vary, according to what country we are considering; but it is rarely understood, even in Staff studies, that it varies equally according to the particular adversary we happen to be considering. In the present study I have stated the definition in the broadest possible terms, and have at this stage purposely avoided limiting it to any one country or war situation, with the express purpose of being free to bring out certain implications which are commonly, if not always, overlooked. The more important opportunity for misunderstanding is, of course, that my views on the phenomena war and peace do not coincide with those currently fashionable, particularly in advanced intellectual circles. For we must face the fact that for a decade past the natural reaction from war conditions has shattered the public mentality so completely that our public discussions of such questions have very little relation to fact; they are excursions into ideal rather than Realpolitik. And as such they serve merely to prevent public discussion or accept-

Regression analysis was used to correlate the physical properties of 478 sandstone and 90 carbonate core samples. Porosity, permeability, electrical formation resistivity factor, capillary pressure and the sonic velocity of the shear and compressional waves were measured. Prediction equations for porosity, permeability and electrical formation resistivity factor were found which should be useful in understanding the relationships between the physical properties of porous media in formation evaluation. INTRODUCTION The physical properties of porous media are important to the petroleum engineer and geologist. To evaluate fully the potential and behavior of a subsurface formation such as a petroleum reservoir, certain physical properties of the porous medium must be known. The problem of accurately determining physical properties of subsurface formations has not been solved because many determinations must be made by indirect measurements and because of the difficulties caused by complex pore structure and presence of clays in most naturally occurring porous media. Due to the difficulty in measuring some of the physical properties of porous media, it would be advantageous to be able to predict a certain physical property of a rock from other physical properties of the rock which could be measured more easily and more accurately. Since most potential reservoir rocks are heterogeneous, relationships between the physical properties are very complex and thus far no satisfactory correlations based on theory or laboratory models have been developed. It appears that empirical relationships obtained by measuring the physical properties of a large number of samples of naturally occurring porous media and applying regression analysis to develop equations for one physical property in terms of other rock properties is the best approach. REVIEW LITERATURE The three physical properties used as dependent variables for correlating purposes were porosity, permeability and formation factor. Since formation factor is more difficult to determine, a brief review of the literature is provided on this property. The first work on determining formation factors was published by Archie1 in 1942. He defined this property of a porous medium as F - Ro/Rw......(1) where Ro is the resistivity of the porous medium when completely saturated with a brine of resistivity Rw. Archie found the best correlation between formation factor and porosity was the following equation, where is the porosity fraction and m is the constant characteristic of the rock. The value of m was 1.3 for unconsolidated sand packs, and ranged from 1.8 to 2.0 for consolidated sandstones. In 1950 Patnode and Wyllie2 and De Witte3 observed that the formation factor as determined by Eq. 1 was valid only when the porous medium contained no conductive solids such as clay or shale. When conductive solids are present the formation factor is also dependent on the resistivity of the saturating fluid. Therefore, in samples containing conductive solids the formation factor decreased as the resistivity of the saturating fluid increased. Because of this. the measured formation factor was called the apparent formation factor and was designated Fa. Patnode and Wyllie proposed the following equation,

When a blast furnace has a certain defined burden and is operated under fixed conditions of blast temperature, etc., the fuel efficiency is determined by the extent to which the reducing gases can remove oxygen from the burden in the furnace stack. This is determined by two distinct factors: 1) The uniformity of gas-solid contact, and 2) The ease with which oxygen can be removed from individual pieces of burden. This latter is often called burden reducibility. When burdens were poorly prepared the first factor was by far the most important and a study of the reducibility of individual lumps was of rather academic interest. In recent years good burden preparation with emphasis on uniformly sized material has led to greatly improved gas distribution in the stack, and thus the second factor has become much more important and there has been a marked increase in interest in methods of measuring reducibility. This paper explores the Linder method of measuring such reducibility. The measurement of reducibility of burden materials must be carried out under conditions duplicating, as nearly as possible, those of the blast furnace stack. This is very difficult since the blast furnace process is a counter-current one, and thus the initial conditions encountered by the solid (gas temperature, composition, etc.) are the result of heat and mass transfer occurring lower down the stack. Any method of burden testing which does not take this into account is, at least to some extent, based on arbitrary assumptions. In an attempt to study blast furnace reactions under non-arbitrary conditions BISRA adopted the SCICE technique as a method of investigation. This technique has been used with a measure of success.' The SCICE technique, however, was found to be too slow for use as a routine test for burden materials and it was decided to construct additional equipment for burden testing. A test was required which would: 1) Be as realistic as possible. 2) Be quick and easy to operate. 3) Give some indication of the breakdown likely to take place during reduction in addition to a reducibility index. After a critical assessment of the reducibility tests which have been proposed it was decided to adopt the Linder test equipment and procedure as a basis for burden testing. THE LINDER TEST APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The apparatus which was constructed (Fig. 1) was the same as that described by Linder2 except for minor changes in design. Linder also laid down a test procedure which he had derived from the results of investigations on Swedish blast furnaces. The variations of temperature and gas composition during the test were defined; these are shown diagram-matically in Fig. 2. BISRA's intention was to use the standard temperature and gas composition programmes for testing a variety of burden materials and also to investigate the influence of different programmes on standard burden materials, making use of information from the SCICE apparatus wherever this is possible. Up to the present, effort has been concentrated on the first part of the programme, and work on the second part has only just commenced. For each test 200 g of coke and 500 g of burden material were used. Linder had recommended that the coke and burden material should be between 1 and 1 1/2 in. and this was adhered to in early experiments on ores and sinters. Since the eventual aim of this work was to relate the test results to blast furnace operation, it was decided to carry out subsequent experiments using burden material in the size range used in the blast furnace, as far as this was possible. If the main interest was, for example, a comparison of the products resulting from different methods of agglomeration, then there would be advantages in using burden materials as close as possible to a standard size. After the charge had been placed in the reaction tube and this had been connected to the gas supply, rotation of the reaction tube at 30 rpm was started and the reduction programme was commenced, the gas temperature and composition being manually controlled according to the programme shown in Fig. 2. After the reduction test the charge was cooled in a nitrogen atmosphere. It was then removed from the reaction tube, the coke and burden separated, and the extent of burden breakdown assessed by screening it at 10 and 30 mesh. The extent of reduction was then

Thermal deco7nposition of Pyrite particles in a fluidized bed with inert gas stream was studied. Assuming that heat transfer from the surroundings to the fluidized particles controls the overall decomposition rate, rate equations for the batch process and for the continuous process were derived. In the batch experiment, a linear rate equation satisfies the experimental results and the overall heat transfer coefficient calculated from the rate constant agrees fairly well with that obtained by Leva.l1 For the continuous process, two rate equations were derived, one on the assumption of complete mixing of particles and another on the upward piston flow of particles in a fluidized bed. The former holds for a bed containing a higher fraction of decomposed pyrite realized at lower feeding rates. The latter can be applied for a bed at higher feeding rates. Thus, segregation of particles in the fluidized bed was indicated at higher feeding rates. Bed temperatures also correspond to these conditions. ThERMAL decomposition of pyrite may be represented by Eq. [I]. The pressure of diatomic sulfur gas reaches 1 atm at about 690°C. The thermodynamics,' kinetics,2'3 composition, and properties3-5 of decomposed products of such a reaction have been studied. Pyrite is a very common sul-fide mineral and is often accompanied with other sul-fides. It is of basic interest in nonferrous metallurgy to clarify the behavior of pyrite in the pyrometallur-gical processes of sulfide minerals of metals such as copper, lead, zinc, nickel, and so forth. Interest in this reaction increased recently because of possible elimination of arsenic from pyrite in processing highly purified iron oxide pellets. Producing elemental sulfur from pyrite, instead of sulfuric acid, also aroused interest in this reaction. It is indicated that the thermal decomposition of solid particles, such as calcium carbonate, proceeds through three major sequential steps: heat transfer, interfacial chemical reaction, and mass transfer.637 It is known that the decomposed product of pyrite is very porous2, 3 and the diatomic sulfur gas evolved can easily escape through this layer of decomposed product. It depends upon the circumstances, therefore, whether the heat transfer to the interface within particles or the chemical reaction at the interface determines the overall decomposition rate. The enthalpy change in the decomposition of pyrite is about 33 kcal per mole FeS2 which is comparable to that of calcium carbonate. The decomposition of calcium car- bonate becomes more and more dependent on the rate of transport of heat when reaction temperature increases, such as occurs in a fluidized bed.6'7 It is reasonable to presume, therefore, that the thermal decomposition of pyrite, an endothermic process, carried out in a fluidized bed may be analyzed according to the heat transfer controlling model. This work intends, first, to propose a mathematical model that determines the overall rate in a fluidized bed for the decomposition process and, second, to investigate a few characteristics of the fluidized bed based upon the experimental results obtained. KINETICS OF THERMAL DECOMPOSITION IN A FLUIDIZED BED It is intended in this section to obtain rate equations for thermal decomposition of pyrite in a fluidized bed by assuming that the overall rate is determined by heat transfer from the surroundings to the particles. Both batch and continuous processes are considered. 1) Batch Process. To obtain the rate equation in the batch process, the following two additional assumptions are made. First, the temperature of preheated inert gas, tg, blown into the fluidized bed is assumed to be the same as the temperature of the fluidized bed, tf. Thus, no heat exchange occurs between the gas and particles in the bed and only the heat transfer from the reactor wall kept at tw to the particles is to be considered. Second, the decomposition is assumed to start at the outer surface of the particles and to proceed toward the center. At any given time during decomposition, undecomposed pyrite remains in the tori at a temperature: td. The decomposed shell is composed of FeS1+x whose outer surface is at tp Diatomic sulfur gas evolving at the interface is heated to tf during its escape through the decomposed shell. PeRhaps of all the scientific economic questions which have been claiming the attention of capitalists, metallurgists, manufacturers, directors of public utilities, and the general public of America, during the last few years, none have been of more importance than the one relating to the wear and safety of steel rails. The discovery of the Bessemer process made possible modern railway development. In that growth, as has generally happened in all progressive movemeuts, all its departments have not remained equally balanced. Iron rails permitted the construction of roadways for the passage of power-driven vehicles. In time the speed and weight of such carriages proved too much for the wearing-qualities of the rails, and the limit of railway capacity seemed to have been reached. Bessemer made his invention, which was soon perfected and developed, especially as related to steel rails, and thereby increased the limit of capacity, and vastly greater railway progress was made pgssible. The Siemens-Martin open-hearth process followed, and was later supplemented by the Thomas-Q-ilchrist basic improvement. For a time the Bessemer steel rails of commerce were more than equal to all that was asked of them, but this did not long continue, as evidenced by the records in our Tansactions. Revolutionary changes occurred in the industrial world, and in no part of it more than in steel-rail manufacture. Great and powerful commercial combinations were made, whose financial resources made possible the supplanting of the then most efficient blast-furnaces, steel-works, and mills, by others of theretofore unimagined capacity. Old traditions and practices of steel-making were wiped away, and, in too many cases, output was apparently the chief aim, with the result that much dissatisfaction with the wear and safety of rails was felt by railway officials, and the general public was concerned as to its safety when traveling. THIS paper presents briefly some of the principal results of 3 ½ months field work during the summer of 1938 in the Chichagof mining district, southeastern Alaska. The report is preliminary and presumably will be followed later by a more complete report to be published by the Geological Survey. The paper is concerned principally with the structural geology of a block of steeply dipping graywacke as revealed underground in the Hirst Chichagof and the Chichagoff mines, the two principal mines of the district. The two mines have produced about $16,000,000 worth of gold and silver. The attitude of the graywacke, which is locally cut by dikes and sills of aplite, is remarkably uniform and trends about N. 62° W. The average dip is about 67° SW. The graywacke is cut by large faults, the best known of which are the Hirst and the Chichagof, whose average trends are about N. 30° W. and average dips about 75° SW. The faults at some places split into the bedding of the graywacke and at others are deflected from their normal trends for considerable distances along the bedding. The relative movements along the faults was northwest and up at about 30° for the south-west or hanging-wall sides. The ore bodies are elongate quartz lenses in the faults. Most of the quartz is mineralized but locally large quartz masses are too low grade to be mined. The emplacement of the ore bodies appears to have been structurally controlled in large part by the intersections of the faults with the bedding surfaces. Places where the faults split or are deflected appear to have been particularly favorable places for ore deposition. There has been some post-quartz movements along the faults but it is thought that such movements have not been extensive enough to greatly modify the original positions and shapes of the ore bodies.
