Metallurgical changes in SAE 52100 ball-bearing components resulting from overload testing are described. Changes in microstructure, hardness, and resiclctal stresses crre discussed zuitlz re.ference to material cleanliness obtained by various steel-melting practices and are compared with work by otlzer investigators. Evidence is presented to show that the initialion and development of microstruc-tural alterations are characterized by two separate reactions: the appeavance of a "dark etchingJ' constituent, and "gray lines" or a light etclzing constituent. The dependency of these tzvo reactions on material cleunliness, running tirne, and contact stresses is discussed and a failure mode related to material cleanliness and microstructural transformation is proposed. THE study of ball- and roller-bearing contact fatigue has been paced by a strong emphasis on bears ing application performance. Particular attention has been paid to conditions that effect the spalling-type failure that is characteristic of rolling contact fatigue in through-hardened components. Some of the conditions investigated are lubrication and atmosphere,1-3 material characteristics and finish,475 and speed and design fa~tors."~ A typical spalling-type failure is shown in Fig. 1. The arrow shows the motion of the ball relative to the inner-ring race surface. The leading edge of the spall is usually sharper than the trailing edge. The race surface near the trailing edge also shows small dents caused by debris from the spall. In this type of testing very little metallurgical investigation is done on failed bearings. Emphasis is placed on test conditions and statistical analyses of endurance data. More basic work has been done relating micro-structural changes to fatigue performance. Dyer" and Wood, Cousland, and sargant9 have used mostly simple materials, such as single crystals and single-phase polycrystalline specimens, under simple alternating strain to identify a systematic process of fatigue damage. drutowski" was concerned primarily with the relationship between steel structure, contact stress, and energy losses in rolling contact. dones11 and Bush, Grube, and Robinson12 utilized changes in microstructure and residual stress in overload-tested rolling contact elements as a means of investigating the fatigue process. Work is being done on an ASME-sponsored contract,13 using both simple and complex materials, but there is still a long way to go before such theories as pore and void growth in simple structures can be applied to the relatively complex bearing steel microstructure. The purpose of this paper is to report on an investigation into the effect of steel cleanliness on the structural alteration and residual stress changes found in overload-tested ball bearings. Using these results and those of previous investigators, we will propose probable failure mechanisms in both overload- and normal load-tested ball bearings.14,15 PROCEDURE Ball bearings? 3208 size, were fabricated from SAE 52100 steel obtained by five different melting practices. The melting practices, chemistry, and inclusion ratings for the five lots of steel are summarized in Tables I and 11. The nonmetallic inclusion ratings were determined by the Jernkontoret method described in ASTM E45-51 Method A. This technique consists of microscopically examining a series of polished samples taken from specified locations in the ingots, billets, or bars. Each sample is surveyed at XlOO magnification and the inclusion types and sizes are compared to standard fields. The purposes of this study are (a) to determine the accuracy of a previously proposed method for calclrlating average reservoir pressure and (b) to find a method for estimating the shape of the drainage area of each well in a bounded reservoir. Both numerical and experimental methods are used to determine the pressure distribution and the location of drainage bounrlaries in idealized reservoirs at steady state. A number of photographs are included which show flowlines and drainage areas in reservoir models of various shapes. Results from these studies are then compared with those from the previously proposed method for calculating average reservoir pressure.' It is concluded that the previously proposed method is sufficiently accurate for most reservoir engineering purposes. In addition, some simple methods are given for estimation of .shapes of drainage boundaries. INTRODUCTION A method for the determination of the average Pressure in a bounded reservoir was previously developed by Matthews, Brons, and Hazebroek,1 and presented at the Petroleum Branch Fall Meeting in 1953.† In aP- plying this method, the reservoir was first divided into drainage volumes; second, the average pressure in each drainage volume was calculated; and third, these drainage volume pressures were averaged volumetrically to give the average pressure in the reservoir. It was shown that each well's individual drainage volume, at steady state, is proportional to the well's production rate; however. the question of how to estimate accurately the shape of these drainage volumes could not be answered. Furthermore, in calculating the average pressure for each drainage area, the actual drainage areas, which are in general quite asymmetric in shape, are replaced with one of the symmetric prototypes given in T.P. 3876. A question may then be raised as to how accurately the symmetrical figures depict the pressure behavior of the actual unsymmetrical drainage areas. The study reported on in the present paper was made in an attempt to shed light on the above questions. METHODS It was shown in T.P. 3876 that after a period of steady rate of withdrawal the rate of pressure decline becomes constant at every point in a bounded reservoir containing a single-phase fluid whose compressibility is small and constant and whose viscosity is con-

The following is a brief report on how they do it-their techniques and equipment. Depth of working in British mines varies from about 150 ft to more than 3000 ft, with the average being about 1300 ft. Average seam thickness is approximately 40 in., but working seams vary from 16 in. to as much as 14 ft.

The Cook Ranch Field produces from a very permeable lens of Cook Sand of lower Permian or upper Pennsylvanian age, occurring at an average depth of 1.300 ft. The field was discovered in 1926, and has been operated with low pressure gas injection since July, 1927, one of the first such projects in Texas. Cumulative recovery to Dec. 31. 1950, was 14,701,131 bbl of crude oil, an average of 1,013 bbl per acre-ft of oil rection. and 72.5 per cent of the oil originally in place. Analysis of the reservoir performance indicates that grav-ity drainage has been an important factor in the producing mechanism. The high permeability and uniformity of the reservoir were extremely Favorable tor this type of operation. INTRODUCTION The Cook Ranch Field is the largest of a number of relatively small, shallow producing areas near .Albany, in Shackelford County, Texas. This field is one of the first to be operated by gas injection in Texas, and probably is the most successful low pressure gas injection project ever attempted. The field is owned entirely by Koeser and Pendleton, Inc., and Continental Oil Co., and has been operated by Roeser and Pendleton, Inc., since it was discovered. This study has been made possible through the cooperation of Roeser and Pendleton, Inc.. in making availahle a remarkably complete set of records covering all phases of their operations. The purpose of this paper is to present a summary of the history of the operations through Dec. 31, 1950, and to analyze some of the factors which appear to be responsible for the success of the project. Information concerning the physical plant and the early gas injection history has been presented in an earlier paper.' RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS production in the Cook Ranch Field is from a large lens of Cook Sand. of lower Permian or upper Pennsylvanian age, occurring at an average depth of 1.300 ft. The average dip of the sand body, as shown in Fig. 1. is only about 50 ft per mile to the northwest. The reservoir has an area of 930 acres and contains 15,512 acre-ft of Sand, consisting of about 14.512 acre-ft of produc-tive oil zone. and an estimated 1.000 acre-ft of primary gas-cap. The iso-pachous map (Fig. 2) was prepared from drillers' logs. Recent coring in the field has proven these logs to be quite accurate. The productive limits of the field are defined by shale on all sides but the southwest where a small zone of edgewater was encountered. This water does not appear to have encroached into the reservoir, and water production has been small. A smaller producing area to the south of the Cook Ranch Field also produces from the Cook Sand. but is separated from the reservoir under consideration by a band of shale. The sand consists of well sorted, coarse grained. rounded and subangu-lar quartz fragments. very poorly cemented. The analysis of 46 chip-core samples from two recently completed test wells indicates a range of porosity values between 12.5 and 28.2 per cent. wit11 an arithmetic average of 24.0 per cent. Air permeability values range between 50 and 2,300 md, with an arithmetic average of 1.200 md. The reservoir where cored is a Solid sand body. with no discernible major shale breaks or impermeable streaks. Vertical permeability appears to be of the same magnitude as the horizontal permeability. A core of the Cook Sand was cut ill the smaller field to the south, using lubricating oil as drilling fluid. The connate water content of the sand in this core was found to average about ten per cent, and the porosity and permeability were comparable with the values reported above. This paper will discuss a US Bureau of Mines project designed to assess and predict the impacts which surface coal mining will have on the regional shallow groundwater systems in the Powder River Basin. The primary objective will be met through the accomplishment of the following: (1) The design and establishment of a regional network for monitoring shallow groundwater systems in the basin; (2) monitoring the direction and rate of flow, water quality, and aquifer characteristics of the shallow groundwater systems; and (3) development of a regional groundwater simulation model, with appurtenant subroutines to determine local effects.

An investigation has been made of the multiplying factors for some of the more common alloying and deoxidizing elements for use in calculating hardenability of steel according to Grossmann's method. The factors for manganese, silicon, and aluminum that were reported in an earlier communication2 have been confirmed by microscopic determination of the half-martensite structure rather than on the basis of an empirically determined hardness corresponding to a half-martensite structure. Measurement of ideal critical diameter by microscopic examination was found to be necessary for other alloying elements, and multiplying factors for nickel, chromium, molybdenum, zirconium, vanadium, titanium, and boron have been determined. The nature and order of magnitude of the multiplying factors reflect the effect of the alloying elements on the structural character of the steel. Except for nickel and vanadium, the multiplying factors agree fairly well with previously published results. Good correlation between actual and calculated ideal critical diameters has been found in developing the multiplying factors and in checking the results against fairly simple steels. However, some discrepancies have suggested the need for a more thorough study of low-carbon and complex steels. Testing Procedure The investigation was conducted principally on steels made at the Union Car- bide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., in high-frequency induction furnaces using Armco iron and standard alloying materials. However, a few open-hearth steels were used in establishing the effect of nickel, and the hardenability factor for boron was based primarily on open-hearth steels. All bars were normalized prior to the machining of Jominy hardenability specimens. The Jominy test was carried out under conditions standard for the test.3 Austenitizing temperatures judged to be appropriate for the compositions of the steels were used. Chemical analysis was determined on a sample taken adjacent to the Jominy specimen. Residual amounts of phosphorus, sulphur, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and copper were determined on only one heat of each group made with the same materials during the same period. "Acid-soluble" aluminum and zirconium rather than total amounts were determined, as it is considered probable that the acid-soluble amount is more representative of the effective alloy. As tin was present to the extent of only 0.002 per cent, its effect was neglected. The method used to determine boron in the steels shown in Table 9* was developed by Galen Porter, Vincent Napoleon, and Thomas R. Cunningham, of the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., and is a modification of J. Naftel's procedure for boron in soils

Some form of wage incentives has been used traditionally in the mining industry to determine miners' pay. However, very little is actually known about the administration of such wage incentive plans in mining. As far as the authors know this is the first time a general examination of wage incentive systems as applied to underground mining has been undertaken.* This article reports the results of an investigation pertaining to the administration of wage incentive programs for miners who drill, blast, and load- mainly in underground metallic mining operations. This investigation was conducted to obtain management's views and attitudes towards wage incentives; therefore, the results do not necessarily represent accurately the thoughts of the miners themselves nor those of any organized union of miners.

A review of the movement of coal in water is undertaken from a practical rather than a theoretical view point. Installations are described in which coal is transported on gradients down to 2.5' and others which move coal at a water-coal ratio of 1:l by weight. The water cycle of the hydraulic mining system is discussed. In many applications this can be a closed circuit. The coal dewatering system is illustrated, making particular reference to the problems of storage of coal-water mixtures between the mine and the plant. Water treatment is done in thickeners down to 100 ppm which is normally sufficient for re-circulating through high pressure pumps and monitors.

Complete automation of concentrator operations through computer control has been under increasing consideration by American engineers for several years. Although justification for full-scale automation of a mill must ultimately be economic- added profits exceeding instrumentation and development costs-the technical feasibility of automation will be determined by the availability of requisite, detailed knowledge of the various unit operations in the plant. This poses problems. BASIC PROBLEMS WHICH MUST BE CONSIDERED A hypothetical porphyry copper mill will be used here to illustrate these problems. Its flowsheet will involve: mining, crushing, storage, grinding and classification, flotation, product de-watering, and disposal.

Operators of coal preparation plants use equipment such as large-capacity dump trucks and bulldozers to haul, spread, and compact refuse material to conform to federal and state regulations governing the disposal of solid waste. For example, federal regulations require that refuse be spread and compacted in layers not more than 0.6 m (2 ft) thick. If the refuse layers or piles have poor load-bearing characteristics, movement of equipment over them becomes extremely difficult. The increasing cost and limited space for the construction of settling ponds extensively used for fine refuse disposal are leading to the growing practice of dewatering the fine refuse by means of vacuum disk filters and combining the resulting filter cake with coarse refuse for waste bank disposal. However, this filter cake usually contains more than 25% moisture. Therefore, when it is combined with coarse refuse, the moisture level of the total refuse may become high enough to impair the load-bearing strength of the refuse. Precisely this problem and the attendant difficulties of moving heavy equipment arose when vacuum disk filters were installed at a preparation plant in West Virginia. Combining the moist filter cake with the coarse refuse generally results in a 12% moisture level for the total refuse at this plant. At this moisture level, the refuse can still be handled with some dif¬ficulty by the equipment. However, the problem has frequently been compounded after rains. The experimental program described in this paper tested the following methods of improving the load-bearing properties of coal refuse: moisture reduction, addition of crushed coarse refuse, addition of fly ash, addition of lime, and addition of a mixture of lime and fly ash. In terms of a balance between economic and technical considerations, the most effective method was demonstrated by laboratory and plant tests to be a 2% to 5% addition of lime. Test Program During formulation of a test program aimed at improving coal refuse stability, a number of treatment techniques were selected for evaluation of their effect on refuse load-bearing characteristics. The reduction of refuse moisture was the first technique considered, since moisture content plays a key role in the bearing strength of a bulk solid. The reasoning was that a very small reduction in refuse moisture, provided it could be accomplished with minimal effort and cost, would be sufficient for eliminating refuse disposal problems most of the time. At the same time, it was recognized that periods of rainy weather would offset moisture-reduction measures. Other techniques selected for evaluation because of their potential for improving refuse-bearing strength at reasonable cost were: addition of crushed coarse refuse, the addition of fly ash, and the addition of lime. A simple one-dimensional laboratory compaction test was designed for evaluating the effect of each of these techniques on refuse-bearing strength. Those techniques that gave best results in the laboratory would then be tested in the preparation plant in West Virginia. Laboratory Tests The laboratory test for evaluating each of the techniques involved the application of weight to a load module placed on a refuse sample in a container. The distance the load module sank with an increasing amount of applied weight was measured, and the relationship between module displacement and loading was obtained. The refuse container was large enough to minimize the influence of wall effects, and to decrease the effect of the container bottom, a test was terminated when the load module sank to about three fourths the depth of the container. Initially, an attempt was made to conduct compaction experiments with samples of total plant refuse. However, the presence of + 0.13 m (+ 5 in.) material in the refuse interfered with the mechanics of the test, and the large amount of material required for a representative sample made testing extremely tedious and time-consuming. To avoid this problem and because it was believed that only the fine components of the refuse were the major cause of the stability problem, tests were conducted with 13 mm X 0 (1/2 in. X 0) material from the total plant refuse. The equipment consisted of a 0.46 m (18 in.) cubic container, a loading module with 62 cm2 loading area, weights totaling 450 kg, and a portable concrete mixer for combining water and additives with the refuse. Refuse samples of about 110 kg dry weight were used for each test. Experimental compaction test data were evaluated by plotting the linear displacement of the load module vs. loading. The Mascot-Jefferson City zinc mining district in eastern Tennessee has been a major zinc producer for over 60 years. The district lies within the Tennessee division of the Appalachian Valley and is underlain by folded and faulted Paleozoic rocks. The local formations are composed of limestones and dolomites with occasional shales, and sand- stones, and thin and scattered chert nodules. The regional structure of the district is unique in that it is complicated by irregular, distorted, and broken anticlines, synclines, domes, and major and minor post-ore folding and faulting.

Zinc vapor from a reservoir of liquid zinc maintained at lower temperatures was diffused into sets of copper-zinc alloys at 759° and 870° C and into sets of silver-zinc alloys at 650° and 700° C. Each set of ,four copper-zinc alloys consisted of pure copper and 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30 brass. Similarly the set of silver-base alloys consisted of specimens containing 0, 7, 15, and 20 pct Zn. Natural markers at the initial surfaces of the specimens ware "trapped" under a thin electroplate and their depth of burying was measured after diffusion. The ratio of diffusivities of the two components determined from these data and the chemical diffusion coefficient calculated by the Matano method agreed with previously reported results. The line of markers was irregular and was often discontinuous when a grain boundary was crossed. TECHNIQUES involving the vapor phase have been widely employed in studying diffusion phenomena in metals. Many investigators have evaporated the more volatile component from an alloy, but it is generally believed that the porosity created under these conditions interferes with adequate interpretation of the experimental results. The extensive work of Gertsriken6 has been criticized on this score. Accary1 found that the diffusion coefficient for de-zincification of brass is larger by a factor of five than that for zincification, although he attributed the difference to a higher vacancy concentration under conditions of dezincification. Balluffi and siegle2 thoroughly investigated the technique of adding a more volatile component to a less volatile base metal as a means for studying diffusion. They verified that no porosity forms in a brass under these conditions and that the diffusivities of the two components can be determined from observations of the motion of markers originally placed on the surface of the specimen. The mathematical analysis that they developed for treating the experimental data was modified in a later note, but essentially it involved using the graphical Boltzmann-Matano method that is customarily applied to solid-solid diffusion couples. The experimental method used in the present research was similar to that employed by Balluffi and Siegle except for two modifications. Balluffi and Siegle used alloy chips as the source of metal vapor. This procedure has the disadvantage that the concentration of solute at the surface of the specimen changes during the diffusion experiment as the alloy content of the chips is gradually decreased. This disadvantage was overcome by employing liquid zinc as the source of zinc vapor in a manner similar to that described by Herasymenko.9 There was then no limitation on the amount of solute usefully available, and several relatively large specimens could be diffused in a given experiment. The second modification was the use of natural markers on the surface of the specimen rather than larger, artificial markers, such as the alumina powder employed by Balluffi and Siegle. It was expected that the fine, natural markers would permit more precise measurement of the buried interface as in the case of ordinary sandwich specimens.10 EXPERIMENTAL The experiments were designed so that zinc from the vapor phase would maintain a constant zinc content at the surface of pure copper (or silver) and

Here the world's largest titanium mine produces 5200 long tons of ore per day and pours 8000 long tons of waste rock over its dumps. Concentrated ilmenite is sent by rail to National Lead Co. pigment plants, and a second product, magnetite, is sold to steel producers in raw form or is agglomerated and shipped as sinter. Several earlier attempts had been made to produce iron from the deposits, which have been known since 1826. These attempts failed, chiefly because of titanium impurity. In 1941 the present owners re-established the operation for production of war-scarce ilmenite, and the impurity became the main product.

The paper "Design of Surface and Near-Surface Construction in Rock" by Deere, Hendron, Jr., Patton, and Cording discloses a principal difference between civil and mining engineering as applied to openings in rock. Generally, the civil engineer considers an opening as an asset, where a mining engineer finds that most of his openings are a liability. The openings, or rock surfaces, treated in the paper by Deere and coauthors are designed for lasting stability and the foundations for dams, the diversion tunnels, abutments, and surface excavations are expected to be stable for long periods or provide continuous access and other useful purposes. Except for those openings used for the transportation of men, materials, ore, and for ventilation, the mining engineer finds that his underground openings serve no useful purpose once the mineralized rock has been removed. Usually, these openings create problems such as reduced ventilation efficiency, added requirements for scaling, sealing, and other tasks necessary to maintain or isolate the openings. The surface openings and mine plants present another liability to the mining engineer. After the product has been removed from the earth, the abandoned pits or strips, tailing ponds, dumps, and buildings sometimes become hazardous, unsightly, or occupy surface areas that could be used for other purposes. As a general rule, the various disciplines involved in rock mechanics have different objectives and uses for openings; however, the basic concepts regarding the design or control of openings in rock are similar for each discipline. The review by Deere and his coauthors contains examples of the duplications in this technology, and, in particular, the common approaches used by civil and mining engineers. At the Troy meeting of the Institute, in October, 1883, I presented a paper entitled "Smelting Notes from Chihuahua, Mexico,"" in which was briefly described a cupellation-hearth, commonly met with in the northern part of Mexico, called in the vernacular un vaso. Since writing the paper I have had occasion to construct a hearth of this description for myself, using it, in conjunction with a waterjacket, for the reduction of a very refractory ore in the form of concentrates ; and I now avail myself of this opportunity to qualify some of the statements made in the paper referred to. Forecasters, in estimating long-term energy requirements and supplies, have predicted a bright outlook for coal. Some predictions have annual coal output reaching 800 million tons by 1980, almost twice the average of the last five years. These projections assume that ultimate consumer energy products will be supplied adequately not only in volume but also by kind and type. The consumer energy schedule shifts continually as it reflects the changing demands for numerous uses. Its appearance, expressed generally in proportions of solids, liquids, gases and electricity, is quite different today from what it was in 1940. It may change even more by 1980. Thus, the shares that coal and the other energy sources will have In total supply will depend upon how well each source can be processed into products that will be accepted by consumers.

Twenty years ago, the northern Oquirrh Mountains overlooking Salt Lake City were bare. Heavy logging and overgrazing combined with erosion and uncontrolled forest fires had severely denuded the mountains by the turn of the century. As a final coup de grace, a copper smelter was built there in 1906, and for the next 50 years its sulfurous fumes killed off what little vegetation remained. In 1956, Paul Rokich, a biology student at the Univer¬sity of Utah, started to surreptitiously restore the mountains. For the next 17 years, Rokich devoted his spare time and money to replanting the Oquirrhs, with the result that several thousand acres of the mountains are green again, and animals have returned: deer, elk, and rabbits thrive among olive, maple, and fruit trees, wheat grass, and sunflowers.
