The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure were exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geochemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont province of Cabarrus and Stanly counties, N.C. The area chosen for study is shown in [Fig. 1], lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, N.C. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low metamorphic grade. The area is considered to be an early Paleozoic active, continental margin. l As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. [Figure 2] is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in [Table 1]. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses completed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hi11. 3, 5, 6 In separate studies, well waters, 5 B-zone soils,3 and vein and float from the area were sampled and analyzed. Each study concluded separately that geochemical anomalies in the vicinity of the ores justify use of that specific sampling technique in a geochemical exploration program. To mine very weak carboniferous schists subjected to high ground pressures the underhand cut-and-fill stoping method was proposed using an artificial plate roof. An experimental stope was mined using three consecutive levels. Rock pressures, deformation of the reinforced concrete plate, and the quality of stowing were evaluated. It was found that roof deformations were minimized if the reinforced concrete plate and uncemented backfill were replaced with cemented backfill containing reinforcement near the bottom. The mining method prevented the occurrence of high rock pressures at the face. The method is suitable for mining subvertical ore bodies with large horizontal areas.

Consideration is given to creater formation with shallow, contained, chemical explosions in rock masses which exhibit different inherent physical and mechanical properties as determined by standard laboratory techniques. The primary purpose is to determine whether or not a simple but useful generalized correlation can be established between explosive crater formation and one or more common rock properties. Such a correlation could be beneficial in predicting with some degree of reliability the size of a crater which could be expected in a particular rock type for a given input of explosive energy. A series of crater formation experiments employing constant weight charges of Gelex 2 explosive was conducted in five submembers of the taconite formation at the eastern end of the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota. Five mechanical and physical properties-unconfined tensile and compressive strengths, Young's modulus of elasticity, longitudinal wave velocity, and density-were determined by conventional laboratory techniques using core samples from the taconite submembers. Although insufficient data were obtained to warrant the use of mathematical methods in the determination of empirical relationships, the results provided a fairly strong indication that with an increase in magnitude of any one of the five rock properties definite decreases in the optimum crater volume and surface area occur. Furthermore, for a constant explosive energy input, the presence of bedding planes and joint systems in a rock mass influences the formation of craters in such a manner as to increase the volume of rock broken substantially above that expected from the same rock mass without joint systems and, in particular, without bedding planes.

The mine and mill of the Climax Molybdenum Co. are at Climax, Colorado. Climax is on Fremont pass directly on the Continental Divide, at an elevation of 11,400 feet. Description of Ore The Climax ore-bearing rock is essentially an altered and highly silicified granite, fully half of the gangue being quartz. Molybdenite is the only mineral of economic consequence and most of it is intimately associated with quartz in the form of fine veinlets and stringers. Other minerals are molybdite, pyrite, and chal-copyrite. While the molybdite may be readily extracted by hydrometallurgical methods, its content is too low to make such operations profitable. The pyrite content ranges from 2 to 5 per cent and that of the chalcopyrite from 0.03 to 0.05 per cent. There is not enough copper to make its recovery attractive and one of the metallurgical problems is the elimination of it and the pyrite from the product. On account of the close association of the molybdenite with the quartz and the necessity of eliminating the pyrite and chalcopyrite from the final product, fine grinding followed by flotation is the only feasible method of concentration. History Construction of the first milling unit was started in 1917 and it was operated during parts of 1918 and 1919. In the postwar years, there was almost no demand for the product and production was at a standstill until 1924. The Company's research campaign to develop the use of the metal began to show results in that year. From r926 to 1932 production ranged from 500 to 1200 tons per day. In 1931 an additional mill section was built and production was gradually increased until in 1934 and 1935 about 3000 to 4000 tons was milled per day. This tonnage overtaxed the milling facilities, and as the demand for inolybdenum was growing constantly, additional milling equipment was needed. In 1936 and 1937 another crushing plant, six additional mill sections and the necessary auxiliary plants were constructed and brought into operation. This plant was designed to mill I0,000 tons per day, but it was not long before 12.500 tons was being treated during periods of peak demands. During the summer of 1941, to meet defense needs, the mill has been required to treat 15,500 tons per day. This has been accomplished with little plant expansion and at no loss in recovery, as will be described later. TO increase capacity still further, one more primary section is now being built. This will bring capacity to 18,000 tons per day, which can be stretched to 20,000 tons at a small sacrifice in recovery. Crushing There are two crushing plants: No. I, of 5000 tons capacity (flowsheet in Fig. I) and No. 2, of 15,000 tons capacity (Fig. a).

It has been known for many years that when a wire is moved in a magnetic field, an electromotive force is developed which is proportional to the rate at which the wire is moved in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic intensity and to the magnetic intensity itself. If the ends of the wire are connected to a current indicator, the current behaves exactly as though the source of electromotive force were a galvanic cell. If a wire is wound circularly and rotated uniformly around a diameter not parallel to the intensity, the current flowing through the wire will be alternating of sinusoidal shape. If, instead of a single loop, there are several turns wound in a short helix, the electromotive force developed will be approximately proportional to the number of turns, the area of the helix and to the speed of rotation. The maximum electromotive force will be developed when the axis of rotation is perpendicular to the field; if this is not so, only the component of the intensity that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation is effective. This is the principle of the usual earth inductor. With a few turns of wire and comparatively slow rotation, it is possible to produce a considerable deflection of a galvanometer. If two similar coils are rotated together at two different points for which the magnetic field intensities perpendicular to the axes of rotation are different, the electromotive forces developed will each depend on its corresponding intensity and be a measure of that intensity. If the intensities are sufficiently different so that the electromotive forces may be compared, the two intensities may be compared. This is the principle

While most of the Pittsburgh coal horizon is dependably regular, there are areas where it is dis-turbed by sandstone cutouts which can seriously hamper mining operations. Because these channel sandstones often cut out the coal abruptly, they are difficult to detect by core drilling; and mine operators, for want of a better way to discover them, have largely trusted to luck to avoid them. This paper, based on a study the author is presently conducting, is an attempt to point out some sources of information and signposts which might aid the operator in determining the presence of a cutout before he begins to mine. The presence of sandstone cutouts in the Pittsburgh coal has been known for many years. Some of these irregularities were observed at outcrops and others were discovered by drilling, but the majority were and are found during mining operations. These sandstone cutouts are commonly called "faults" and have been a bane to mining companies wherever they have been encountered. Profiles of some typical deposits appear in Fig. 1. The cutouts disrupt the normal system of mining, replace valuable coal reserves, create ventilation problems by emitting large quantities of gas and sometimes oil, limit the number of entries that can be economically driven, affect the quality of the coal, disrupt the normal structure of the coal, and create roof control problems. It might be expected that such severe disturbances in the structural regularity of the coal would instigate determined and extensive searches for possible cutouts prior to mining operations, but this apparently has not been so except in isolated cases. Two reasons may be cited to explain this lack of exploratory work. The first and probably the strongest reason is the over-all regularity of the Pittsburgh coal. No coal seam in the country exhibits the horizontal continuity and relative regularity of the Pittsburgh coal. It lies in an almost unbroken sheet across southwestern Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia, and has been recognized as far east as the Potomac Basin of western Maryland. Over 5729 square miles are underlain by this coal, of which 2077 square miles are in Pennsylvania, 2214 square miles in West Virginia, 1410 square miles in Ohio, and 28 square miles in Maryland. The area covered by this study is outlined by the map in Fig. 2. Over most of this territory the coal has the following characteristic structure as illustrated in Fig. 3: roof coal, draw slate, breast coal, parting, bearing in coal, parting, brick coal, parting, and bottom coal. With such regularity of thickness and structure, mines were opened and laid out with confidence that the coal would be present. Extensive drill testing was considered unwarranted and it was also quite expensive because the coal dipped to the west away from the Monongahela River. SEVERAL investigators1-8 have reported evidence of the existence of native or connate water in oil-and-gas-bearing strata. Both water and salt have been detected in cores of oil sands that yielded oil and gas exclusively when produced. Electrical logs often reveal unexpectedly low resistivity through oil and gas sands, indicating the presence of some material that is a considerably better conductor of current than oil and gas. Furthermore, calculations9 of the oil and gas content of reservoirs based upon production and reservoir-pressure decline data indicate appreciably lower values than are arrived at under the assumption that the pore space is occupied completely by oil and gas. ORIGIN AND OCCURRENCE OF CONNATE WATER IN OIL-AND-GAS-BEARING FORMATIONS The view has been expressed,10-15 and is generally agreed upon, that the expulsion of oil and gas material from source beds and the subsequent migration and accumulation occurred in the presence of salt water. As the strata that usually form reservoirs for oil and gas were laid down by, or in the presence of, ancient seas, the pore space within the strata must have been saturated with salt water before the entrance of the oil and/or gas. Thus, the accumulation of oil and/or gas in the upper regions of structures suitable for reservoirs must have required displacement of the connate water therefrom. In the absence of any forces other than gravitational, it would be expected that the displacement of the connate water out of the zones finally occupied by gas and oil would be complete, and that the vertical distribution of gas, oil, and water in a reservoir would be strictly in the order of their densities. Apparently, however, surface and interfacial forces that will not permit complete segregation of the fluids are active within the capillary spaces comprising a reservoir. The effects of these forces on both accumulation and production of oil and gas have been the subject of study by a number of investigators. 16-37

THE literature on the binary alloys of iron and silicon has been reviewed by Stoughton and Greiner.1 Another even more extensive and detailed survey of the present knowledge has been prepared under the auspices of the Alloys of Iron Research Committee by Greiner, Marsh and Stoughton. Since the latter survey has already been issued in its preliminary form, it will be unnecessary to review the literature in the present article. However, in this connection there should be noted the important work on the crystal structures of the iron-silicon alloys by Phragmén,2 who investigated the entire system, identified the various phases and determined the homogeneity ranges of these phases. It was evident in the surveys cited above that in the range from 0 to 15 per cent silicon, which includes the commercially most' important alloys, the results obtained by thermal analysis, microscopic examination and the determination of electrical, magnetic and mechanical properties were extremely confusing. From time to time various compounds between iron and silicon have been postulated to account for the results yielded by the classical methods, and much argument has ensued. It was presumed that if compounds occurred which are sufficiently diverse in their properties to account for the characteristics of the alloys, they should be recognizable as separate phases but satisfactory proof of this sort has not been found by thermal or microscopic methods. Contrib-uting to the confusion is the fact that the electrical, the magnetic and some of the mechanical properties are "structure sensitive"; i. e., they are influenced to a marked degree by the presence of minute amounts of impurities, the specific characters of these impurities, the grain size, the character of the grain boundaries, small general or local strains, etc. Thus interpretations of the discontinuities in the various property versus composition curves that identified these discontinuities with phase changes or compound formation have always been open to question.

In a former paper laid before the Institute, entitled Lead and Silver Smelting in Chicago, I endeavored to give a description of the manner in which argentiferous lead ores from the far West were treated in that city, and also described the method employed in the desilverization of the silver-lead produced from the ores. It will perhaps be remembered, that very siliceous ores, principally from the Emma mine, Utah, containing over 40 per cent. of silicic acid, were then being treated at the works of the Chicago Silver Smelting and Refining Company in the reverberatory furnace, with the use of metallic iron, in the form of borings, as a precipitating medium for the lead ; and that the extraction of the silver from the resulting bullion was effected by the Balbach process. The Swansea Works, also the works at Brighton, just outside of this city, and those of S. P. Lunt, were at that time treating ore of a similar character by the same method. The inadequacy of the process for the ores then under treatment was, in a manner, pointed out by me in the paper above referred to. Since the time of its writing, many and important improvements have been made in the metallurgical treatment of western ores in Chicago. Most ores are now roasted previous to reduction, and the latter operation is conducted in the shaftfurnace instead of the reverberatory. Such is the fact at least at the Swansea Works, the largest in the city, and here it was where the first steps were taken in this direction. In selecting these works as the subject of this paper, I am in hopes that the description given of the varions metallurgical operations, as they are there now conducted, will serve to give an idea of the improvements introduced

A review of the published literature on the mechanism of depression of sulfide minerals shows that a unified theory is not yet available. Various mechanisms that have been postulated include competition between depressants and collectors to adsorb at the surface sites, creation of thermodynamic conditions nonconducive for formation of a metal collector salt, or formation of a hydrophilic coating on the surface. The hydrophilic coating may or may not effect the adsorption of collectors. In another mechanism, the depressant may participate directly in oxidation/reduction reactions between collectors and sulfide minerals. Examples from the literature highlight oxidation/reduction effects in the depression of sulfide minerals.

COMMON salt is mentioned in the most ancient writings as an impor-tant article of diet. It is fairly certain that it was used by men and animals long before the dawn of civilization. Its presence in natural springs has often been the determining factor in colonization; wars have been fought for possession of salt deposits; trade routes have been estab-lished expressly for the purpose of traffic in salt. Naturally this led men into adventures and discoveries that altered history and advanced civilization. In the early days the uses for salt were few and the methods of manu-facture were crude and the purity low when compared to salt of the pres-ent day. Then the salt came largely from springs, shallow wells or the ocean, while today deep wells must be drilled to the natural brines or beds of rock -salt and spacious shafts sunk so that the ancient deposits may be made to yield their supply of stored mineral.

Previous studies of activation in flotation have directed attention to the action of the activator on the mineral to be floated rather than to the relationship of the activator to the collector. The latter phase of the problem, however, seems to have definite scientific, if not also practical, interest. In the investigation reported in this paper, experiments were carried out, largely with quartz as subject, barium as activator, and oleate as collector. The results obtained indicate that a I: I ratio of collector ion to activator ion gives optimum results, and that a 2:1 ratio almost fails to achieve activation and flotation. Yet, a 2:I ratio would have been expected on stoichiometric grounds, had the coating been a normal salt of the activator ion with the collector ion, since barium is a divalent cation and oleate a monovalent anion. To interpret and rationalize the observations, considerations of the crystal chemistry of quartz are helpful. The point of view to which these considerations lead may be of general applicability to systems involving suspensions of solids in liquids; they confirm that an adsorbed coating is inescapable. Apparatus and Supplies The experimental work consisted in barium-ion abstraction tests, hydrogen-ion and hydroxyl-ion abstraction tests, flotation tests, and determinations of the surface of the crushed quartz. The flotation machine was built according to the design of D. W. McGlashan.* It consists of a drill press in which the bit has been replaced by a stainless-steel impellor surrounding a stainless-steel sta-tor, as in the Fagergren laboratory machine. The air intake is controlled by a valve, and the cell consists of a beaker. The quartz was obtained from vein quartz stored in large chunks. It was first crushed to 20 mesh, then sized on a 28-mesh screen. The 20 to 28-mesh size alone was retained for use. This size was freed of coarse iron by passage through a Ball-Norton magnetic separator, bleached with boiling hydrochloric acid to remove residual abraded iron, washed with distilled water until the washings were thoroughly free of ferrous, ferric, and excess hydrogen ion, and stored in covered Pyrex beakers under water until used. The barium was used as barium chloride, Baker's analyzed C. P. The oleate was used as sodium oleate. It was prepared from sodium hydroxide, Baker's analyzed C. P., and oleic acid purified by R. R. de Arellano3 in the laboratories at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The purification procedure was elaborated from the recent $researches of Brown and Shinowara.2 It consisted in: (I) saponification of olive oil with potassium

George IV. Goetz, Milwaukee, Wis.: Mr. Campbell deserves much credit for his interesting paper. The literature of the development of the open-hearth process is distributed in many technical journals, and is difficult of access to many engineers. Since the development of the basic process, the open-hearth furnace has been raised from a subsidiary to an independent position. Certain high grades of soft steel can be produced in the basic open-hearth furnace, which cannot be produced by any other known process. In the United States the charges for the acid process generally consist of either scrap and pig-iron or so-called wash-metal and scrap : the pig-and-ore process, as carried out in England, is practiced but very little. The introduction of the basic process has made it possible to use about four times as much pig-iron with scrap as can be used in the acid mixtures. The availability of a cheap pig-iron, very low in silicon and sulphur, and carrying several per cent. of manganese, is one of the reasons why the basic open-hearth process has developed so rapidly in Germany, as regards the output per furnace and the excellent quality of the material produced. The acid Bessemer steel has an inherent stiffness, which is plainly shown when spring steel is made by the Bessemer and by the openhearth processes. In order to get them of about equal stiffness, the open-hearth steel must have about 0.60 per cent. carbon ; whereas, the Bessemer steel must then have ahout 0.45 carbon, the remaining constituents being apparently about the same in each product. It has proved impracticable, with American coke-pig-iron, to interrupt blowing at a certain point in order to make hard steel; and experience has therefore shown that it is best to eliminate nearly all the carbon, and then to recarburize to the desired point. THE present state of iron blast-furnace practice is metallurgical rather than mechanical; the tend-ency is toward intensity rather than toward ex-tension. The engineers have built blast furnaces big enough and strong enough, and have furnished accessory equipment ample and accurate enough for the present state of the art, but the metallurgical side has been too much neglected; the metallurgist, rather than the engi-neer, is now the man on whom the present and future progress in iron blast-furnace practice depends. The mining engineer has produced great tonnages of iron ores, and has kept ahead of the demands for quantity; now the metallurgist is improving the chemical and physical qualities of this product by ore-dressing and other forms of beneficiation. For a generation or more, the principles of mechanics have had most influence in the advancement of iron blast-furnace practice; atten-tion now is given more to the principles of metallurgy, chemistry, and ore-dressing. This metallurgical progress is taking place inside and outside the blast furnace. The two great determining factors of the inside operation are the slag, and the rate of combustibility of the coke. Outside the fur-nace, the progress is, and will be, along the lines of more careful mixing of ores and iron-bearing materials, in the sizing and washing of limestone, and in the char-acter and structure of byproduct coke.

The brittle fracture of a Tic-lnconel cermet at room temperature is shown to occur primarily as a result of the cracking of the larger carbide particles (at a tensile strain of approximately 0.3 pct), followed by cracking of adjacent, smaller carbides and, finally, by the rupture of the lnconel matrix between cracked carbides (at a strain of-1.2 pct). No evidence was found for separation at the interface between carbide and matrix at any point in the fracture process. MATERIAL used in this study was a Tic-Inconel cermet prepared by infiltration (50 pct Tic, 50 pct Inconel: designated as TC66-I). In recent years, solders containing 20 per cent tin with no bismuth or cadmium have been developed by a few companies, and personnel have been properly instructed in their use. In addition, since the tin shortage, a number of solders containing less than 10 per cent Sn, and some with no tin, are being used in special applications; however, a solder of this type has yet to be developed that is satisfactory for general use. The Purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin, with no cadmium or bismuth, having solder properties equivalent to or better than those of substitute solders now specified containing 18 to 20 per cent tin (Table I), or even approaching the properties of the standard 40 to 60 tin-lead solder. The wartime restriction of bismuth and cadmium, elements that have beneficial effects on fluidity, solidification range and strength, makes it increasingly difficult to develop a general-purpose solder containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin. In the course of this investigation, 11 elements were used in various combinations with the basic I5-85 tin-lead alloy. These elements were antimony, silver, copper, indium, thallium, lithium, calcium, barium, potassium, sodium and arsenic. In all, 116 low-tin solders were investigated, with the idea of developing a solder that will give satisfactory working properties, specifically in regard to "wetting" of copper, brass and iron, solidification range, capillarity and shear strength of a soldered joint. The relative importance of these various properties plays an important role in the search for substitute solders, since it is almost impossible to retain all of the desired qualities of a high-tin solder and still make drastic changes in the alloy composition. Because of the expected uses of a general-purpose solder, it is necessary that it have properties, especially in regard to wet-tability, that will enable it to be used on the metals in common use. The recovery of gold and silver from their ores by means of the cyanide process has been so successful in the last few years that ally radical improvement would seem impossible; yet the appliance to which I wish to call attention in this paper is really a radical departure from the methods now in general use. Balancing the prodigious iron ore deposits of Western Australia are the equally vast coal resources of the Bowen series of eastern Queensland. The Bowen series is a Permian basin stretching 500 miles in a north-south line. The beginning of what will be large scale mining of the Kianga-Moura coalfields in Dawson Valley was made by the Australian company of Thiess Bros. in July 1961. Then Peabody Coal Co. of St. Louis, Mo., joined Thiess. Later, Mitsui & Co. Ltd. received a 20% interest in the firm Thiess, Peabody, Mitsui Coal Pty. Ltd. Rtitsui was to lend the company money for development. Queensland Parliament, by special act, granted the company exclusive franchise over the Kianga-Moura coalfield, an area of 350 square miles. The rights do not include other minerals. The company is to have a 120-mile railroad completed to Gladstone or some other port in seven years. It must produce at least 500,000 long tons of coal annually until the line is built, after which production is to be upped to 2 million tons. By December 1962, these arrangements were completed.
