In tank-lixiviation, the extraction of the silver from chloridized ore by solutions of hyposulphite salts is performed by filtration. The ore-particles are kept stationary, while the solvent moves down through the mass of ore. The quickness of extraction, other conditions alike, is in direct proportion to the rapidity of the movement of the solvent through the ore. The solution, if left in contact with the ore without moving, displays but very little solving energy. If the filtration is interrupted for ten or twelve hours, and thus solution and ore are left in complete contact for that length of time, it mill be found that, when filtration is started again, the outflowing solution is but very little more saturated with silver than it was at the time of interruption, and that the ten or twelve hours were almost a perfect loss in the total time of extraction. Notwithstanding the long contact, the solution had not become saturated with silver chloride to its full solving capacity. A rapid movement of the solvent through the ore is essential to a quick extraction. This fact is well known ; and the endeavor of leachers has been to hasten extraction by increasing the rate of filtration. Siphons, vacuumpumps and other devices have been used with more or less success; but none of them have given full satisfaction. I have found that, if chloridized ore is brought into rapid contact with a proper volume of moving sodium hyposulphite solution, the silver chloride contained in the ore dissolves almost instantly, and that it is rather the volume of the solvent than its concentrated state which produces this effect. Such favorable conditions cannot be attained in tanks. The rapidity with which a certain volume of the solvent can be brought into contact with the ore-particles is limited by the speed with which the solution descends through the ore; and thus the leaching-time in tanks cannot be shortened beyond the limit set by the filteringcapacity of the ore. In 1890 I mas manager of a mining enterprise in the State of Michoacan. The ores were composed principally of iron pyrites (much decomposed), in a quartz matrix, with native gold in very irregular grains. Some portions, however, carried their metallic value in a matrix of calcite arid siderite. The mill in which the ores were treated consisted of two 800-lb. stamps, two amalgamating-plates, four pans, two automatic washers, two Frue vanners, and the necessary accessories for assaying, retorting and refining gold. The plant, originally erected with American capital, and directed by competent Americans, passed in 1890 into the hands of Mexican owners. On taking charge of the business I found on hand a large amount of ore assaying 35 grammes of gold per metric ton (about 1 oz. Troy per ton of 2000 lbs.); but the company was losing money, and was about to abandon the business. Obviously, the difficulty lay in the treatment of the ore. The extraction of gold scarcely reached one-tenth of the assayvalue ; the loss of mercury was considerable; and high freight; charges excluded the alternative of exporting the ores. This situation naturally suggested that amalgamation was not applicable to these ores, and that a more appropriate method must be adopted. The cyanide- and chlorination-methods had been tried already, without practically satisfactory results. For the first few months I employed a combined system, extracting a part of the gold by direct amalgamation, and cyaniding the concentrates. This saved 32 per cent. of the assay-value, but the cost of milling still exceeded the proceeds. Meanwhile I observed

DOCTOR Albert Sauveur, distinguished scientist and Honorary Member of this Institute, predicted in the first Howe Memorial Lecture that the privilege of delivering this annual address would be considered a highly significant honor. The intervening years have well borne out Sauveur's prophecy. I wish to assure the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers that I also deeply appreciate this honor, recognizing at the same time the present and even more the future responsibilities with which it is accompanied. Several of the previous lecturers had the good fortune to attend the classes of Professor Howe and to work in his laboratories. I was similarly favored, although in my instance and to my great regret the period was all too short. However, Howe's book, published in 1903, "Iron, Steel and Other Alloys," afforded me abundant opportunity to continue these studies. How well I remember the inspiration I derived from this famous book by Howe, the metallurgical master, pioneer, and educator! Remembering that Professor Howe contributed numerous papers to The Metallographist, a magazine supported from a technical point of view by the world's pioneers in metallography, I was curious a few days ago to learn the nature of Howe's early contributions to this magazine. The first paper by Howe in the first year of The Metallographist (1898) dealt with the allotropic theory; the second also treated of allotropy, and I quote the first sentence of that paper: The allotropic theory of the hardening of steel may, like so many other important theories, have to be accepted or rejected not on direct proof or disproof, but on the accumulation of circumstantial evidence for or against it. Howe's ability to stimulate others by his deep understanding and clarity of expression was truly remarkable; but just as striking was his intuitive judgment concerning the implications of metallurgical data in the arts and sciences. It therefore seems fitting that this lecture comprise a broad treatment of the subject chosen, rather than a closely documented thesis on any one phase of the problem; that in it attention be focused

IT is customary to ascribe two general modes of occurrence to natural gas, namely shale. gas which, as the name indicates, is found in' shale, and reservoir gas, which occurs ill sandstone, conglomerate and dolomitic limestone. Both of these types are found in the Cleveland district. The shale gas has been produced on a small scale for a long period of years, probably dating back as far as 1883. Shale gas is a low-pressure gas, small in volume with variable pressure, and is limited to no definite horizon. It is generally independent of oil, may last for a long time, and is not dependent to any great extent on the structure of the rocks. There are many such wells in the district which range from 400 to 1,840 ft. in depth, although most have been completed at about 800 ft. This indicates that the wells pass through the Cleveland and Chagrin shales into the Huron or Portage shale of the Upper Devonian. During the last 2 years great interest has developed in a deeper-seated reservoir gas. What is commonly called reservoir gas is generally a high-pressure gas occurring in large volume at a definite horizon. Oil may, or may not, be associated with the gas, and in most regions in which reservoir gas is found, the geological structure is of great importance. This type of gas occurs in all large fields such as those of West Virginia which have been supplying Cleveland until the recent discovery of local gas at great depths in commercial amounts.

The history of labor relations in the coal industry of the United States is a study of its collective bargaining. This study of collective bargaining is largely the history of the United Mine Workers of America and its contractual relations with the various coal mining employers who have produced this country's coal over the years under a free enterprise system. There have been other unions in the picture from time to time and some coal miners have mined coal without representation by any union. Even today some 25% of the nation's coal is produced outside of the collective bargaining relationship with the UMWA. However, more than 100,000 coal mine wage employees - well over 75% of the total in the industry - are covered by labor agreements negotiated for them by the UMWA. Practically all of these work in bituminous mines.

A determinatioil of the hydrogen content of molten steel by means of the Vacuum-extraction method, as reported here, consists in first casting a sample of the bath in a bomb, so that the gases evolved during solidification are trapped for analysis. A portion of the cast steel sample is then prepared and heated at a temperature of 600" to 800°C. under high vacuum, and the gaser given off during this vacuum extraction (which are shown to be hydrogen), are collected and measured. Analysis of the gases evolved on solidification and the gases in the solid sample enables an accurate determination of hydrogen in the molten steel. Fig. I shows the bomb and accessories that have been found suitable for trapping the gases evolved on solidification. The bomb is made of scamless steel pipe, approximately 7 in. long by 136 in. i.d., and welded at the bottom. An ordinary pipe cap has a vacuuni-type metal stopcock threaded and brazed in its upper end. This pipe cap fits onto the bomb by means of machined threads. A flange is brazed to the pipe at the point where the cap starts to tighten up, and a rubber gasket is placed between the flange and cap. Heavy vacuum grease is used between the flange and gasket and the gasket and cap. The weight of the complete bomb and it? interval volume is known before the sample is cast. In practice, a sample of about 400 grams of steel is poured into the bomb, the funnel quickly swung out of the way, the bomb cap spun down the threads and tightened against the gasket, and the bomb set in a pail of water to keep the gasket and vacuum grease cool. It is estimated that at least 80 per cent 01 the gases evolved from the liquid sample during solidification are trapped in the bomb."

Shortly after the middle of the nineteenth century, the invention of the regenerative open-hearth furnace and the development of the Bessemer process stimulated a rate of steel production whose magnitude created an unprecedented demand for pig iron. Revolutionary improvements in furnace design, auxiliary equipment, and operating technique enabled the blast furnace to keep abreast of the constantly increasing requirements of the steel mill. The development of improved blowing equipment, more adequate facilities for material handling, and particularly the general use of anthracitc and coke to replace the physically weaker charcoal, led to a rapid expansion in both the height and volume of furnaces. Beyond a doubt, however, the greatest single factor in blast-furnace improvement at this time was the use of the higher blast temperatures made available by the replacement of the recuperative iron pipe stoves by the regenerative Cowper brick stove. The increased blast temperature not only resulted in greater output but also reduced fuel consumption . far more than could be explained by the additional heat content of the blast. The progress of iron manufacturing was thus largely mechanical and thermal. Little attention was given the chemistry of the process until the publication of the investigations of Sir Lowthian Bell.1 Bell's painstaking experiments and investigations gave to the blast-furnace man his first real scientific conception of blast-furnace chemistry. Bell's recognition of the dual function of the carbon, the technical importance of reversible reactions and chemical equilibria, and his conception of the degree of oxidation of the carbon as shown by the analysis of the outgoing gases as a criterion of furnace efficiency, laid the foundation upon which has since been erected the structure of blast-furnace theory. Prominent among those availing themselves of Bell's data as .a basis of further study was M. L. Gruner,2 professor of the French School of Mines. An investigation of the problem of separating two minerals by a moving inclined plane has revealed that only minerals with considerable difference in sliding friction coefficients separate readily; that it is possible to separate two minerals when only one of them has a rolling friction coefficient; that difference in geometrical shape of the minerals is important to separation which improves as grain size increases; and that the thickness of the stream falling on the belt influences the grade of separation - the thinner the stream, the smaller the interference between the grains of the minerals to be separated and the higher the degree of separation. The problem of separating two minerals with different friction coefficients and shapes by a moving inclined plane has been investigated. Friction separators can be used to separate two materials that differ in shape and in friction coefficient. 1,3 Gladkov has presented some theoretical aspects of using a moving plane to clean corn and podded seeds; this method, however, did not result in practical application. When considering the separation of minerals, only those with considerable difference in sliding friction coefficients can be taken into account. Furthermore, it is possible to separate two minerals when only one of them has a rolling friction coefficient. The difference in geometrical shape of two minerals is also important to separation. It has been found that the separation of two minerals improves as the grain size increases. For example, coal and slate over 2 in. in grain size separate much better than materials of smaller grain size. As Table I indicates, the slate grains smaller than 25 mm gradually lose their flat shape with decreases in size and are more rounded than larger grains, which are almost flat. The smallest grains of slate in first and second fractions slide down the belt since their friction coefficients decrease and approach the value of the rolling coefficient. The percentage of separation of the first fraction is, therefore, low. Thickness of the coal stream falling on the belt also influences the grade of separation; the thinner the stream, the smaller the interference between the grains of the two minerals to be separated and the higher the degree of separation.

A full survey of the laboratory and blast furnace tests carried out on two types of acid pellets is given. From the lab tests it appears that type B has a better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A. The chemical composition and swelling indexes do not differ for both types. From the blast furnace test periods, carried out with a charge of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter, it follows that both types of pellets lead to the same pig-iron production, blast furnace permeability, and blast furnace dust production. It also can be concluded that type B pellets cause a significantly higher coke consumption.

PINE Creek mine of Union Carbide Nuclear Co. is some 23 miles northwest of Bishop, Calif., in the Sierra Nevada Mts. Office and mill are 7800 ft above sea level, the 1500 level portal is at 9300 ft, the A level portal at 10,800 ft, and the 3050 portal at 11,500 ft. Original claims were located in 1916, and the mine worked intermittently until 1936, when it was purchased by Union Carbide Corp. Since then the property has been operated continuously, except for two brief periods when operations were suspended because of manpower shortages. Mine production through 1956 amounted to 2,792,425 dry tons of ore.

I HAVE been asked to discuss "What Can be Done to Revive the Mining Industry," particularly from the standpoint of the copper industry. It is impossible to consider this problem, if in fact there can be one, from an isolated position. The mining industry is but a part, although a very important one, of that exceedingly complicated machine characterized as commerce, which comprises within its operation and functions the-multitudinous activities that, combined, make up the sum total of the production, manufacture, distribution, sale and utilization of goods and products resulting from the agrarian, industrial and commercial effort of mankind. We survey a world today with its disturbed mass of humanity permeated with discontent, passions loosened by brutal combat not yet brought under control, class hatreds aroused, national prejudices in a state of stimu-lated excitement, governments for the most part enfeebled, some destroyed to their foundations, with fragile structures raised in place of those that seemed enduring, and which have disappeared. A burden of indebtedness incurred in defiance of all economic law exists, to meet the exactions of which, levies of taxation that constitute a grievous burden upon effort and industry are exacted by the needs of those nations that are most favored, while printing presses are busy manufacturing currency that either has, or approaches, a negative value among those less favored. This picture, while not pleasant, is one that should be looked at squarely and carefully appraised in estimating the immediate future. For four years the world marshalled, and exerted without stint, its combined endurance, vitality and resource in an effort of destruction, which violated no less the orderly working of physical and economic laws than it did the conventions of social and civic relations. To have imagined that without travail the orderly processes that governed the relations of mankind could at once be reestablished and begin functioning, was, as has been demonstrated, fallacious; perhaps no more so than the error that is committed today by those opportunists who fail to take cogni-zance of basic conditions which must be remedied be-fore the world can resume its progress to a universally prosperous and satisfactory condition. Please do not gather from this somewhat unpleasant recital that I regard the future with gloomy foreboding or entertain pessimistic doubts, for, emphatically, I do not.

A well can flow exclusively through the casing or exclusively through a tubing but can also flow partly through a casing and at the top part through a tubing. The main principles of the flowing of wells under these conditions were explained in the author's former paper.' Practically all factors that influence the regular flow are dealt with therein. The question of irregular flow, however, will be discussed briefly here. As a rule, an irregular flow must be avoided, as it may be assumed that the efficiency is thereby very small, while on many fields it is injurious to the sand of the oil-bearing layer. Periodical flowing often occurs with rising mixtures of gas and liquid. The phenomenon can be explained if it is accepted that two conditions are possible in the mixture; namely, the foam condition and the mist condition. If there is no stabilizer in the liquid, the foam condition can exist only when the liquid forms a greater portion of the volume than the gas. The mist condition, on the other hand, can exist only when the liquid occupies a smaller part of the volume than the gas. The foam condition occurs when there are gas bubbles in the liquid mass, while in the mist condition drops of liquid are disseminated in a gas-filled space. For sake of simplicity, it has been assumed that the mist condition prevails when 50 per cent. or more of the volume is occupied by gas, while with less than 50 per cent. gas the foam condition will arise. For distilled water and for oils which do not tend to form stable foams this is probably approximately true. If this does not hold good, however, two cases are possible: (1) The fields of the two conditions overlap or (2) they do not meet. If the fields of the conditions overlap there is an intermediate field where either of the two conditions can exist, depending on the history of the mixture. A detailed description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in 1920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E. Hunner, M. H. Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,³ it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice. Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved. † The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Tacenite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with inter-bedded slate layers. :'paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers inter- bedded in the iron formation, high in phosphorus, alumina and moisture. The iron ores fall into two classes: (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite). The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high-manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Bessemer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden-removal and shaft-mining costs. Stripping Practice Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer, In- the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of paper. and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be overequipped and high depreciation charges Will have to be absorbed.

THE properties and casting characteristics of sand-cast Mg-Al-Zn alloys, used commercially in this country and abroad, have been discussed in a number of articles during the past few years.'-" In addition, broad surveys of many compositions in the magnesium corner of the Mg-Al-Zn diagram between 0 and 12 pct A1 and 0 and 6 pct Zn have been presented by Busk and Marande7 and by Fox." The purpose of this paper is to furnish a comprehensive survey of the changes in tensile properties, micro-structure, and dimensional stability of two magnesium alloys, AZ92A and AZ63A,+ as a function of aging time and temperature after solution heat treatment. Rates of precipitation in Mg-Al-Zn alloys are slow enough so that a substantially homogeneous, supersaturated solid solution can be maintained even when these alloys are air-cooled from the heat-treating temperature. Consequently, even though it has been demonstrated9 10 that significantly higher strengths can be developed in some alloys in the aged condition by quenching rather than air cooling from the heat-treating temperature, general practice is to air-cool magnesium alloys. All the work discussed in this paper is based, therefore, on aging studies performed on material air-cooled from the heat-treating temperature. This investigation was intended to be a study of commercially practical aging cycles; the tensile properties were determined, therefore, up to aging times of 25-hr duration. The alloys, used in this investigation were prepared in the laboratory by remelting commercial ingots of the appropriate composition according to the procedures described in a previous paper" as the "crucible method." All melts were given the standard superheating treatment in order to insure the maintenance of a uniform grain size of 0.003 to 0.004 in. Standard test bars, 61/2 in. long with a 2½ in. long reduced section having a diameter of Y2 in., were cast from these melts in green-sand molds using a four-bar pattern. The alloys were heat treated according to the following schedules: AZ92A alloy: 500" to 780°F in 2 hr + 780°F (24 hr) AZ63Aalloy: 500" to740°Fin2 hr + 740°F (16hr) In commercial practice," AZ92A alloy is heat treated at 770°F for 18 hr and AZ63A alloy is heat treated at 730°F for 10 hr. The productive area of asphalt-bearing sandstone in Missouri is near the Missouri-Kansas state line near Nevada, the county seat of Vernon County about 100 miles south of Kansas City. While production thus far has been confined to Vernon and Barton counties, there are known deposits in adjacent counties. The area is served by four railroads: the Missouri Pacific, the Kansas City Southern, the Missouri-Kansas & Texas, and the St. Louis & San Francisco. The plant of the Reliance Rock Asphalt Corporation is in Vernon County, about 5 miles west of Nevada, at Ellis, a flag station on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad. A siding has been built to the plant SO that the finished product can be loaded directly into railroad cars. The property consists of a lease of 240 acres in one block. All portions of the property not required for quarrying or processing the asphalt-bearing sandstone are used for farming by the fee owner. The entire tract is very flat so that there are no transportation difficulties from quarry to plant. Geology The commercial asphalt-bearing sandstones are all of Pennsylvanian age, the major portion of the production coming from the Cherokee formation, the basal member of the Des Moines group. The Cherokee formation includes all beds between the base of the overlying Fort Scott limestone and the Mississippian limestones below. The productive area of asphalt-bearing sandstone in Missouri is near the Missouri-Kansas state line near Nevada, the county seat of Vernon County about 100 miles south of Kansas City. While production thus far has been confined to Vernon and Barton counties, there are known deposits in adjacent counties. The area is served by four railroads: the Missouri Pacific, the Kansas City Southern, the Missouri-Kansas & Texas, and the St. Louis & San Francisco. The plant of the Reliance Rock Asphalt Corporation is in Vernon County, about 5 miles west of Nevada, at Ellis, a flag station on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad. A siding has been built to the plant SO that the finished product can be loaded directly into railroad cars. The property consists of a lease of 240 acres in one block. All portions of the property not required for quarrying or processing the asphalt-bearing sandstone are used for farming by the fee owner. The entire tract is very flat so that there are no transportation difficulties from quarry to plant. Geology The commercial asphalt-bearing sandstones are all of Pennsylvanian age, the major portion of the production coming from the Cherokee formation, the basal member of the Des Moines group. The Cherokee formation includes all beds between the base of the overlying Fort Scott limestone and the Mississippian limestones below. This paper examines the difficulties of applying the finite element (FE) method of analysis to quantitative design of cable bolt systems. Cable bolt systems are in general use for ground control in VCR (Vertical Crater Retreat) topes throughout the world. However, despite their widespread use and importance, design of cable bolt systems is highly subjective. Two difficulties with the FE approach are examined: (i) the use of standard elements with a high aspect ratio (slender elements) to represent bolts, and (ii) the influence of cable bolts on hanging wall stability of a VCR study stope. Analysis results indicate that the use of slender elements for bolts is practical in large scale finite element analyses of VCR stopes. There are significant advantages in this approach to the engineering design of cable bolt systems in underground mining.

The occurrence of outcrops of bituminous schists and sandstones impregnated with heavy asphaltie petroleum first directed attention to the São Pedro area as a possible source of commercial production of petroleum. Since 1920, more than 20 wells have been drilled in this area. The discovery of oil shows and small quantities of natural gas in some of the early wells led to the continuation of drilling in the hope that more important findings would result. During the early part of 1934, detailed magnetometer observations were made in this area, and a considerable number of torsion balance stations were occupied. The results of these geophysical observations help considerably to clarify the structure of the area and the very considerable amount of geologic information available makes possible a much more exact interpretation of geophysical anomalies. In presenting the results of these observations, and interpretation of the geophysical data, certain actual case problems are included; i.e., geophysical anomalies due to anomalous masses of which the forms and positions are more or less known. Although anomalies due to igneous intrusions are probably more important to geophysicists in Brazil than in other countries, these data have a certain interest for all geophysicists, particularly because they were obtained in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the lines of magnetic force are directed upward, and in a region of moderately low inclination. This is considered as a geological-geophysical problem, and only passing mention will be given to the petroleum possibilities of the area. General Geology The location and general geology of the São Pedro area are shown in the sketch map of Fig. 1, which is adapted from the geologic map of South Brazil compiled by Oppenheim1,†- who gives the geologic column of South Brazil (So Pedro and vicinity) as follows:
