In the study of the properties of rutile pigments it became apparent several years ago that certain physical and optical properties could not be determined on particles of pigmentary size. Since reflected light is the dominant type which reaches the eye from small particles, the true color of pure rutile was not known. Most rutile pig-ments are acicular in habit, elongated parallel to the "c" axis. It was considered important to know the nature and tone of light transmitted, for example, by a basal plate. Further, as shown by spectrophotometric curves, there is a very strong absorption of light of 4000 A as measured on particles with random orientation. It would be interesting to see whether this absorption position varied with predetermined and selected orientations. Also, since the behavior of titanium pigments in a vehicle is important, a knowledge of the surface wettability of single crystals by various media should prove very fruitful. Finally, the optical properties of rutile are such that it should show, in a single pure crystal, greater fire and brilliance than the diamond. Mineralogists had long speculated that this would be the case and curiosity was strong to produce a single crystal large enough to cut. In light of the above, a project was initiated for the formation of single crystals of rutile. Method of Formation of Rutile Single Crystals Fortunately, purification of TiO2 produced from both titanium tetra-chloride and titanyl sulphate solutions had reached the stage where spectro-graphically pure starting material could be made. Spectrographic analysis of the feed material used in the initial experiments is compared with the present feed material in Table 1. It is apparent that the present large scale purification is approximately as good as the original experimental, small scale purification. Verneuil1 produced synthetic ruby and corundum in 1904 by the well-known flame fusion process, which today bears his name. Except for mechanical improvements the present commercial production of synthetics by flame fusion is essentially unchanged from his initial method. His burner consisted of an inner orifice through which was fed the feed material and oxygen. Surrounding this was a larger outer orifice through which was fed hydrogen at lower pressure. This arrangement consists then of a lance of oxygen burning in an atmosphere of hydrogen. The proportions of hydrogen to oxygen usually used in corundum production is about 3:1, providing there is sufficient temperature to reach the 2050.°C required for the fusion of alumina. From work done in the Titanium Division Laboratories2 and from the published work of Erlich3 it was known that rutile appears to lose oxygen near its melting point and that it would not be possible to grow single crystals in a strongly reducing environment. Having been occupied in inspecting and testing iron and steel these twenty years in England, and previous to that having served on the Board of Iron Masters in Sweden, I have naturally been very much interested in the subject of the use of steel for structures. I regret that I can offer but comparatively small experience on that had, having had principally to do with steel for railway plant and rails, but granting these to be a kind of "structure," and also that steel for rails has similar duties to perform in many respects, and is generally manufactured in the same way and at the same works as steel for stuctures, properly speaking, I may be entitled to offer an opinion on the use of steel in construction. In a paper recently presented to the Institution of Civil Engineers in London, Mr. Ewing Matheson has recommended that the Board of Trade rules should be amended so as to allow of a maximum straining of 8 tolls per square inch instead of 6 1/2 tons. But it is equally necessary to fix the amount of ductility or elongation of the metal for such a strain as 8 tons. Strength and ductility should always be spoken of together. Mr. Matheson says that steel can be manipulated in the factory in the same way and with the same tools as are used for iron. This can only be granted for mild steel; for hard steel would be spoilt by the rough mechanical treatment which iron can stand, such as punch ing, for instance; and the remedy for regaining the strength lost by punching hard steel, viz., annealing, cannot always be applied. Noth ing proves this fact better than the punching of steel rails of consid erable hardness, which caused fractures at an early period of steelunaking, and which resulted in the stipulation for drilling instead of punching the bolt-holes, which had been formerly applied to iron rails without any damage. Most pellets swell only slightly during reduction, but some swell so enormusly that their increase in size is termed catastrophic. Since catastrophic swelling produces irregularities in blast furnace operation, an understanding of the phenomenon is of practical as well as theoretical interest. Observations have shown that catastrophic swelling is characterized by the growth of a network of fine iron filaments. Evidence is presented to show that the growth of these filaments is promoted by the presence of calcium in the magnetite lattice of the original ore. During reduction, the limited mutual solubility of CaO and FeO produces an unstable condition that inhibits the uniform nucleation of metallic iron. Other elements in the magnetite lattice whose oxides are continuously soluble in FeO in the critical temperature range have no effect. Magmatic segregation or pyrometasomatic replacements are the most likely deposits to contain calciferous magnetite. Over the past few years there has been an increasing concern throughout the iron and steel industry over the tendency of pellets to swell during reduction. Although the tendency for swelling is only one of several attributes that determine the behavior of pellets in the blast furnace, swelling-reduction tests are now part of the normal evaluation procedure of many pellet consumers. During a swelling-reduction test, pellets display either the moderate increase in size known as normal swelling, or the enormous expansion known as catastrophic swelling. This paper is concerned with the origin and control of catastrophic swelling and how it is enhanced or inhibited by the presence of minor elements. Swelling Behavior The swelling behavior of pellets during reduction is indicated in Fig. 1. The lower curve represents normal swelling and the upper curve catastrophic swelling.' During the initial stages of reduction, that is, up to about 20-25% reduction, the two curves are considered to be equivalent. Beyond this point normal pellets undergo a gradual decrease in size with increased reduction. By contrast, pellets which exhibit catastrophic swelling show a second dramatic expansion between 25 and 70% reduction. The initial normal swelling develops as the hematite of the pellet is successively reduced to magnetite, and then to wustite. Work by Edstrom' and others has shown that the reduction of hematite to magnetite is accompanied by a 25% volume increase, whereas the magnetite to wustite stage shows a volume decrease. The volume increase overlaps the wustite field because magnetite is formed simultaneously with the wustite during topochemical reduction of the pellet. THE recrystallization and grain-growth phenomena of cold-worked metals have considerable industrial importance because of their role in the fabrication of metals. For this reason, and because of the general academic interest in the subject, these processes have received consider-able attention since the time of J. E. Stead's paper1 on The Crystalline Structure of Iron and Steel. There are considerable differences of opinion regarding the theory of recrystallization and grain growth and also differences in the observation of the modus operandi of the processes themselves. The value of many of the existing quantitative data on grain growth is decreased by the failure to distinguish between the grain sizes just after complete recrystallization and those resulting from coales-cence. For this reason also, the value of the diagrams of stable grain sizes, like those produced by Bass and Glocker2 and Czochralski3, is lessened in so far as an interpretation of the facts of recrystallization is concerned. It is hoped that the data presented in this paper will help to clarify and to simplify the facts relating to recrystallization, and at the same time will show that some of the present-day conceptions are unten-able. A paper on the theory of recrystallization, with additional data, will be completed in the near future by the writers.

The hot water process for Utah tar sands differs significantly from that used for Canadian tar sands due to inherent differences in respective bitumen viscosities and the nature of bitumen-sand association. These differences have led to the identification of certain design criteria necessary to achieve satisfactory phase disengagement during digestion (Sepulveda and Miller, 1978; Misra and Miller, 1980). Subsequent flotation of digested tar sand is a subject of current attention and is considered in this publication for the Asphalt Ridge deposit. Although contact angle measurements of solvent extracted Asphalt Ridge bitumen indicated moderate hydrophobicity, air bubble attachment to the bitumen concentrate is not possible. This surprising result suggests that flotation separation is dependent on air bubble entrapment rather than on air bubble attachment due to surface hydrophobicity. The entrapment of air bubbles in the bitumen was apparent from examination of the bitumen concentrate, especially at lower flotation temperatures. A factorial design of the major operating variables in flotation separation indicated that the quality of separation was significantly dependent on the flotation temperature and to a lesser extent on the degree of agitation. For a flotation temperature of 77°C a recovery of 96.7% was realized at a grade of 61.0% bitumen. The improved separation at higher flotation temperatures was found to be due to the decrease in bitumen viscosity resulting in more effective rejection of coarse sand from the concentrate. This research effort, which has been sustained for the past six years at the University of Utah, is being continued to provide necessary design data for the construction of a pilot plant to treat Utah tar sands.

Fuller's earths fall within the general group of bleaching clays and gradually the commercial term "fuller's earth" has been applied to natural clays originating, for the most part, in the southeastern section of the United States. FOR several years, the Bureau of Standards has been working in cooperation with an Advisory Committee on non-ferrous metals on various phases of the production and testing of zinc bronzes. The work has dealt, especially with the type of metal known as "Admiralty bronze" in England and as "Government bronze" in this country and consisting of 88 copper, 10 tin, and 2 zinc. Several reports have been made on this subject and these should be considered in connection with this paper.1 FIRST SERIES OF FIVE FOUNDRY TESTS A very brief summary of the first series of five foundry tests has been made,2 but for the sake of clearness the results are given here in different form. The five foundries cooperating in this investigation were: Ohio Brass Co., Mansfield, Ohio; Titanium Alloy Mfg. Co., Niagara Falls, N. Y.; Packard Motor Car Co., Syracuse, N. Y.; National Cash Register Co., Dayton, Ohio; Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C. The object of the work was to determine whether uniform results could be obtained with this alloy in different foundries working under definite instructions. One of the participating foundries prepared, from virgin metal, a stock of ingots of the composition 88 copper, 10 tin, 2 zinc, and at the same time poured nine test bars from this melt of virgin metal. The results of the physical tests of these bars are shown in Table 1. Examination of this table shows that the highest and most nearly uniform results were obtained when the virgin metal was cast flat in chill molds and the lowest and most variable results were encountered when it was cast vertical in green-sand molds. Chemical analysis shows the partition of the magnesium addition between the metal and the graphite is independent of whether the graphite is in the form of nodules or flakes. The bright central spot observed in nodular graphite polished sections is shown to be due to the structure of the nodules. DURING the past few years numerous papers have been published on the production1-7 and heat treatment" of nodular cast irons. However, very little information is available on the structure of the nodules and the reason for their formation. It would appear that an explanation of the phenomenon of nodulation must await a detailed knowledge of the nature of the nodule. Disagreement exists among various workers on such a fundamental point as to whether or not a nodule actually contains a microscopically visible, nongraphitic nucleus.9-11 Work was initiated with a view to obtaining definite information on this and other aspects of the problem. Chemical Separation and Analysis Microscopic appearance had indicated9-11 that a nongraphitic core might exist in nodules (Fig. 1). It appeared that a chemical comparison of separated nodules and flake graphite would be profitable, for if the core is nongraphitic a relatively large amount of certain elements would be found in the nodules as compared to the flake. This comparison could best be made by obtaining nodules and flake from the same melt of cast iron, part of which had been in-noculated with a suitable addition reagent for the formation of nodules. A 300 lb melt was produced. About half of this was innoculated in the ladle with an Fe-Si-Mg alloy to produce nodules and cast into keel blocks; the remaining half of the melt had silicon added in an effort to compensate for the silicon in the innoculant used in the other half of the melt and this was cast into similar keel blocks. The analyses of the resultant irons are given in Table I. Nodules and flake were chemically extracted from 2 kg samples of metal as described in the appendix. While this method dissolved the iron and chromium carbides, it did not dissolve the titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum carbides. These latter carbides could have been removed by nitric acid, but in other experiments it was found that it attacked pools of metallic iron entrapped in the nodules which had, until the nitric acid treatment, been protected from the attack of the sulphuric, hydrochloric, and hydrofluoric acids. It will be shown in the next section that entrapped iron exists in nodules but not in flake. On microscopic examination many tiny irregular particles were observed to accompany both the nodules and the flake. These were identified by tabling a sample of nodules from which a sufficient fraction was obtained for X-ray analysis. A good pattern of titanium carbide was obtained indicating that this was the predominant compound present. Since it was not possible to determine how completely the carbides could be removed mechanically and since their removal from flake is much more difficult, it was decided not to resort to any separation as this would render further comparisons more difficult. Halogen vapor-transport synthesis of Ga(As,-,Px) and its preparation into laser junctions are described. Electrical and optical properties of Ga(As,-,PX) laser junctions are discussed. The present limitations in these properties are related to material proble?vzs and the very early state of development of Ga(As,-,PX), and are discussed in this context. Inhonzogeneity problems, fluctuation of As :P ratio, and problems with deep-level contaminants are described and related to Ga(As,-,PX) junction performance. Laser junctions are demonstrated which operate to wavelengths as short as 6470 A (77°K). The prospect that Ga(As,-,P,) will operate to wavelengths perhaps 100A shorter is mentioned. IN this paper we wish to describe some of the more important features of almost 1 year of experience in the preparation and properties of Ga(As,-,P,) p-n junction lasers. Because much data so far available are far from complete, some of the results still must be considered tentative and subject to correction and revision as work on Ga(As,-,P,) crystal problems progresses. Although the electrical, optical, and device properties of Ga(As,-,P,) junction lasers are understandably of considerable interest, the work to date points out that by far the most serious problems extant and those deserving first attention are problems involving the growth, doping, and perfection of Ga(As,-,P,) crystals. One of the most formidable of these is to grow Ga(As,-,P,) sufficiently free of deep levels, either due to contaminants or to structural imperfections, to allow fabrication of laser p-n junctions which can be cooled and not suffer from "freeze-out" of carriers on deep levels (and consequent double-injection behavior). In addition to the problems of growing crystals adequately free of deep levels and generally of the highest perfection, so that the best possible laser junctions can be realized, the further goal remains of increasing the phosphorus content well beyond 40 pct in an attempt to determine the practical lower wavelength limits of laser action in the Ga(As,-,P,) system. Even though the laser junctions prepared in Ga(As,-,P,) are of importance in their own right, we have considered them at this point mainly a means to study the growth and crystal problems of the material. It can be concluded that the laser junctions now available are almost completely limited by the purity and structural deficiencies of Ga(As,-,P,) crystals, and cannot be fairly compared with, for example, GaAs p-n junction lasers until Ga(As,-,P,) crystal growth has been more extensively developed. The basis for the statements above will become evident in the following sections which describe Ga(As,-,P,) crystal and junction preparation, and laser-junction properties. G(As,-,P,) CRYSTAL GROWTH As previously reported,2 we have found it convenient to employ the halogen vapor-transport process3 for synthesizing Ga(As,-,P,) crystals for use in laser junctions. Commercially available GaAs and Gap, separately prepared by halogen vapor tranport, are sealed in the desired ratio in a quartz vessel with a quantity of column-VI donor and a small quantity of metal halide which supplies the halogen for transport. The sealed ampoule, as shown in Fig. 1, is heated at a temperature in the range from 1025" to 1100°C at the position of the source GaAs and Gap. THE advance made in recent times in this branch of metallurgy is indicated y the attention the subject is receiving from important American copper-producing companies. Reference to the files of publications devoted to the mining industry discloses that some 20 American companies are actively investigating the amenability of their ore, or other material, to leaching methods, and that plants of varying capacities up, to 10,000 tons per day are under construction or are projected. Several leaching works are in commercial operation. It has been frequently pointed out that no method of leaching is universally applicable, for the reason that each ore differs in some particular from apparently similar ore found elsewhere, and also because local conditions are rarely the same even where the ore closely approximates in character that being worked at some other point. For this reason the older companies are approaching the matter in a conservative manner, experimentally determining for themselves the salient features in each instance. In considering a leaching proposition three factors at once fix the attention: (1) disengaging the metal from mineralized forms in Which it is found in nature; (2) recovering the metal in a commercial state after it has been dissolved; (3) the apparatus best adapted to carrying out the several operations.

In 1948 the shaft sinking record in the Republic of South Africa was held by the Van Dyk Consolidated Mines Ltd. for a ventilation shaft with a footage of 461 ft sunk during the month of August 1941. This record remained for some ten years; but in the ensuing nine years it was broken no less than 13 times. Table I gives shaft sinking records throughout the world for the 21 years, 1940 to 1960. History shows that the wide, deep, timbered rectangular shaft had passed its peak of popularity by 1948, although it still had a great deal to commend it, both from the sinking and operational points of view. In sinking, it is easy to clean manually, and water can be handled by bailing when wet ground has to be negotiated; its shape also lends itself to equipping concurrently with sinking. In operation it provides the most convenient "in line" hoisting arrangement, and if the ventilation requirements so demand, it offers the simplest solution in that it can be divided into upcast and downcast sections. Furthermore, in the case of a multi-level mine, the shaft compartments can be reduced conveniently if the full area of the shaft is not required to serve all levels.

In an interesting article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev., W. T. Stuart describes how a difficult water problem, or one phase of it, may be evaluated by means of a small scale test. Test data are plotted by a method rendering, under certain conditions, a straight-line graph that can be projected to show how much the water table will be lowered by pumping at any specified rate for a given time. A formula is then used to determine the size of opening, or extent of workings, necessary to provide sufficient inflow to enable pumping to be maintained at that rate. At first glance this might seem the answer to a miner's prayer, but a word of caution is in order. It may not be the whole answer. Moreover, results obtained by the method described are reliable only for conditions approximating those assumed. Even where conditions do not meet this requirement, however, it may be possible to draw helpful inferences from the results, perhaps enough to facilitate another approach to evaluation of a problem.

Ontario Division of The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, operates five under- ground mines and one open pit on the rim of the Sudbury basin. In 1962, the total underground ore production was over 10 million tons which was mined mainly by blasthole and caving methods with the remainder by cut-and-fill, square set and undercut-and-fill techniques. Because of the large expenditures required annually for explosives, a great deal of study has been devoted toward cost reduction in this field. The large saving effected by ammonium nitrate-fuel oil combination at the open pits, along with reports of its success in underground mining in Sweden, generated much interest in the possibility of its use as a replacement for high explosives in the underground operations at Inco. In June, 1960, a research engineer was assigned to this project, and preliminary investigations soon indicated substantial savings and important safety advantages. The final results of the program were successful beyond any expectations and ANFO is now used exclusively in all Inco mining operations in Ontario except shaft sinking.

Dr. Clark has given an excellent resum6 of the recent theoretical re- search work that has been done on the generation and propagation of stress waves in various types of media.1 Unfortunately the dynamic properties of rock do not fit the assumed properties of the idealized media. As a result, none of the theoretical solutions for the generation of stress waves by applied pressures to interior boundaries of the spherical or cylindrical cavity appear to be completely satisfactory to explain experimental data. This fact does not mean that the theoretical work is in error. It simply means that the appropriate dynamic properties of rock have not been taken into account in the present theoretical derivations. Because of the difficulty of theoretically accounting for the crushing and cracking that takes place when explosives are detonated in spherical or cylindrical cavities, it seems advisable that future theoretical studies should attempt to separate the generation of stress waves from the propagation of stress waves. Perhaps if these two problems are separated, we may be able to solve one of them satisfactorily so that theory and experimental data agree. Dr. Clark's resumé of the research work on scaling and crater formation by point charges is aimed at obtaining a basic understanding of the physical theory of rock breakage, wave generation, and wave propagation. A cursory reading of Dr. Clark's paper shows that there is very little information summarized that can be used by the practicing engineer in the field of blasting. IN the flotation of iron ores laurylamine derivatives have been used for considerable time.1, 2' To effect satisfactory separation of the gangue, pre-dominantly silica, from the iron oxide minerals, the addition of specific depressants for the iron oxides has been found necessary. Starches and starch products have been used for this purpose.V here is, however, very little published information on the effects of these materials and other variables on this process. In some cases it has been found that prior acid scrubbing and desliming are essential," and depending upon the efficiency of the subsequent washing step, there will be accompanying changes in pH. It was the object of this investigation to test and observe the effects of the above factor as well as to examine and compare the action of various starches and starch products. Ore Preparation The ore used in this experiment was a wash-ore tailing obtained from the western Mesabi range. Microscopic examination and x-ray analysis of the ore showed it to consist of hematite, goethite, and quartz. Physical properties of the iron minerals ranged from hard and crystalline to earthy and ocherous. The quartz grains were discolored either because of iron-oxide inclusions or because of a sur-face coating of iron oxide. The ore assayed 27.52

Introduction Historically, the presence of methane has been a problem, mainly in and around the working areas of active coal mines, and only in these areas has drainage been considered. Drainage, where practical, has been achieved through the drilling of holes forward into the coal and the surrounding strata from the working area. These holes generaly have been short in length, although where methane drainage operations around a longwall face have been undertaken, the holes have had to be longer in order to adequately drain from the center of the face into the access gate roads. In recent years, attempts have been made to degasify the coal seams in advance of mining, without disruption of the mining cycle. This is done by drilling much longer horizontal holes through the coal in advance of the working area. Under the aegis of the federal government, methods have also been developed for draining coal seams of their methane content in advance of mining, but from shafts sunk from the surface, without using the active area of the mine as the location for the drill holes. Development of methane drainage has recently been encouraged by the potential use of the drained methane as a commercial energy source, with a need, therefore, to adequately organize a collection system, separate from mining the seam for coal. This has already been successfully accomplished, for example, in the Federal No. 2 mine of Eastern Associated Coal Corp. starting in 1975 (Johns). However, whether the system gains access to the coal through horizontal drilling from a pre- existing mine or via access through a separate shaft from the surface, long horizontal holes are required to adequately tap the methane reserve. It is to this regard-the actual drilling of the horizontal holes-that this paper is directed. It will examine potential benefits that may accrue, both in conventional horizontal hole drilling from a mine site underground, and also in drilling from the surface if a high pressure water jet drill is used to drill the degasification holes. Long Hole Drilling from an Underground Site Personnel from the Bureau of Mines have recently examined methods for conventional drilling of long horizontal holes to gain access for methane drainage. They have shown that it is possible (Cervik, Fields, and Aul) to drill out some 610 m using a conventional drilling system. Three types of bit were used in the program and by alternating between a drag bit, tricone bit, and plug bit, advance rates of between 0.6-3.6 m/min were achieved. Hole diameters varied from 7.6-9.2 cm in surface tests at bit thrusts of 1360 kg. A hole was then drilled and maintained in relative alignment within the coal seam for a distance of 640 m. Thrust levels had to be lowered to between 363-680 kg across the bit. Because the loads were smaller than those used in the surface trial, advance rates in the hole were of the order of 10-38 cm/min. The thrust level was lowered since it was found that the level of the thrust controlled the inclination of the drill so that, for example, a thrust of 363 kg caused the hole to incline downward, while at greater than 544 kg the hole inclined upward with the 9-cm-diam bit. Thrust levels increased 227 kg when the hole diameter was raised to 9.2 cm, although in such a case penetration rates in excess of 56 cm/min could be achieved. Horizontal Water Jet Drilling of Coal The University of Missouri-Rolla has recently undertaken research for Sandia Laboratories on the use of high pressure water jets as a means of drilling through coal. The initial experiment in this program called for drilling a hole horizontally into a coal seam from the side of a strip pit using water jets as the cutting mechanism. A very simple setup [(Fig. 1)] was used in this program and a 15-m hole was drilled at an approximate drilling speed of 1.2 m/min. The nozzle was designed so that the hole dimension was approximately 15 cm across [(Fig 2)] and the thrust was maintained at levels below 91 kg in moving the drill into the coal face. The system used was very crude and comprised a high pressure water jet drill enclosed within a 5.7-cm outer diameter galvanized water pipe to provide rigidity to the drilling system. This pipe sufficed to maintain hole alignment over the 15-m increment. While it is premature to make long-term predictions on ultimate applicability of this sytem to long hole drilling, certain inherent advantages of water jets can be delineated from research results and suggest considerable advantage to further research in development of this application. High pressure water was supplied at approximately 62 046 kPa from a 112-kW high pressure pump, with a 83 L/m flow through the supply line to the nozzle. The drilling system consisted of a nozzle rigidly attached to the front end of the galvanized piping. THE reverberatory copper-refining furnaces at the Great Falls Reduction Dept. of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. have used successively, as fuel, lump coal on grates, pulverized coal, oil and natural gas. In no other plant, so far as can be ascertained, has such a variety of fuels been used. This fact affords a unique opportunity for comparing the relative efficiency obtained with these several fuels under nearly identical conditions. FURNACES The present furnace refinery at Great Falls was placed in operation in April, 1916. The original installation consisted of two furnaces, each with hearths 36 by 14 ft. and provided with fire boxes 10 by 12 ft. for firing lump coal on grates. These furnaces had air-cooled sand bottoms and chrome-brick side walls both above and below the metal line. The roofs were of 12-in. silica brick. Each furnace was provided with a waste-heat boiler of approximately 400 boiler-hp. capacity. We soon found that chrome brick was very unsatisfactory as sidewall material because of its excessive spalling. At the first opportunity the furnaces were rebuilt, using magnesite brick below the metal line and silica brick from the metal line to the roof. At the same time the thickness of the side walls was increased, thus decreasing the width of the hearth to 13 ft. At about this time also, the thickness of the furnace roofs was increased from 12 to 15 in. No further changes occurred in furnace design until 1922, when the use of lump coal on grates was abandoned in favor of pulverized coal.

The following investigation was undertaken to develop a method for determining with reasonable accuracy the depth of overburdens of 100 ft. or less. Seismic methods seemed to offer good possibilities. The problem differed from that of the familiar salt-dome location in that the depth of overburden to be determined is much less than is encountered in oil prospecting. This means that a much shorter time interval must be measured with accuracy. Refraction methods seem at present to offer greater possibilities than reflection. The air sound persists for from 0.1 to 0.5 sec., because of echoes, and seismic reflections coming during this time are difficult to detect. A seismometer sensitive to vertical vibrations only offers possibilities and has been used here with some success. It is hoped that the application of this type of seismometer to reflection shooting in this region may be investigated still further. The apparatus used consisted of a carbon-button seismometer followed by a three-stage, transformer-coupled, vacuum-tube amplifier and a General Radio string oscillograph. Time marks are provided by a 1000-cycle, 600-r.p.m., synchronous motor provided with five spokes which intercept the light to the camera at 1/50 sec. intervals. This motor is driven by a two-stage vacuum-tube amplifier of 3 watt output, actuated by a tuning fork. The power supply for the seismometer amplifier is one 2-volt storage and one 45-volt B battery. The motor amplifier is powered by a 6-volt storage battery and 6 to 225-volt, 15-watt motor generator. The temperature-frequency characteristics of the tuning fork have been determined and for ordinary working temperatures the error in time that would be introduced is less than M millisecond for time intervals up to 100 milliseconds. The impact is produced by a sledge blow for surface distances less than 100 ft. and dynamite for greater distances. Two steel balls with wires attached form an electric circuit through a 1-ft. piece of railroad rail upon which they rest. BECAUSE of the nature of the environments in which metals are handled, it is natural that gases should be suspected of intruding into metallurgical operations, there to produce effects both beneficial and detrimental. The problem of tracing and controlling such effects is often made difficult by the complexity of the conditions surrounding 'their occurrence, even though the fundamental mechanisms involved may be simple and of familiar type. Many gas-metal reactions are known to be implemented by processes of diffusion. These form a homogeneous group of phenomena which become more readily understandable when viewed together, in that the knowledge gained from one serves to interpret the next. It is the purpose of the present paper to present, by means of examples drawn from practice, a brief survey, of the ways in which gas-metal diffusion serves and obstructs the purposes of the metal-fabricating industries. The selection of the cases described was made by consulting more than thirty-six practicing experts whose combined experience provided an extensive coverage of the field and who were in a position to supply examples of occurrences of present day interest. The response was generous and it is regrettable that space permits the description of only a limited number of typical examples with but brief mention of parallel cases. THE NATURE OF GAS-METAL DIFFUSION The term "gas-metal diffusion," although commonly used, is ambiguous in so far as it implies that a definite group of substances may be identified as gases and may be expected to behave in a manner distinct from other substances in association with metals. "Gases" such as oxygen and hydrogen when diffusing through a liquid or solid metal are properly components of the liquid or solid solution; they behave as alloying elements and are not to be distinguished in their diffusion characteristics from other elements, except that each has an individual rate of diffusion. On the other hand, a number of metals in certain temperature ranges are volatile to the extent that they may appear in the form of vapor in metallurgical operations. For the sake of greater definiteness, therefore, it will be convenient to- regard as "gas-metal diffusion" any process in which the result depends upon one or more of the diffusing elements appearing, at some stage, in the gaseous state, or as a compound gas.
