Current research by the US Bureau of Mines to develop technology for improving efficiency and productivity in metal/nonmetal mines is described. The research program addresses a wide variety of problems associated with each of the major categories of mining: underground mining, surface mining, m situ mining, and premining investigations. An overview of the Bureau's research activities is given with emphasis on underground mining. In particular, two innovative and promising concepts currently under development are described: a unique shaft sinking system that uses an impact hammer for rock fragmentation, and a low-profile portable crusher for underground hard-rock applications.

The rise of drain holes drilled from a well to improve productivity is becoming increasingly common. This paper presents data on the productivity increase that may he expected. The data were obtained by use of an electrolytic tank mode1 of a reservoir. Parameter varied in the study to show their effect on productivity include the length, number, and arrangement of drain holes, formation thickness, and damage near the well-hore. The most important results are that very large increases in productivity can be expected only ill damaged wells. The distance, to which drain holes penetrate is of primary importance. Additional length is more effective than increasing the number of drain holes. INTRODUCTI O N In planning the use of drain holes to improve productivity, it is important to he able to estimate the increase in production that can be obtained for a given expenditure. It is also important to know what combination of parameters related to the use of drain holes can he chosen to give the largest production increase. This paper presents data on the productivity increase that may be expected, as obtained by use of an electrolytic tank model of the reservoir. In this study, :! number of parameters were varied to show their effect on productivity. These included the length, number, and arrangement of the drain holes. The presence or absence of a damaged zone of low permeability around the well-bore and the thickness of the producing formation were also considered. The productivity increase that might be expected due to drain holes is presented as the ratio: productivity of a well after drain holes are drilled and completed to the productivity of the same well in an undamaged state without drain holes. The symbol Q/Qo is used to represent this productivity ratio. Thus, the comparison in each case is with a formation of uniform and undamaged permeability. Additional notation includes I;, for the radial extent of the damaged zone, which is assumed to be cylindrical and concentric with the wellbore. Thus the effect of an actual block is approximated by a discontinuous varia-tion in permeability. For purposes of this paper, the permeability within the damaged zone, denoted by kb, is assumed to be 1/25 that in the remainder of the formation, or k. A necessary assumption in making comparative tests using an electrolytic model is that reservoir flow behavior can be approximated by single-phase, steady-\tate flow according to Darey's Law. In addition, the formation must be assumed to be homogeneous with equal horizontal and vertical permeability. The well-hore diameter in this study is assumed to be 11¾ in. and the drainage radius of the well equal to 500 ft. The drain holes are considered to have been completed without damage. The basic operating properties of the DorrClone are discussed and certain metallurgical applications which exploit these properties are presented. An effective method of controlling the consistency of the DorrClone underflow is described. THIS paper presents in a general manner some of the applications of the DorrClone (Dutch States Mines cyclone) in the metallurgical and heavy chemical fields. Technical or mathematical analyses of the design factors and of the mechanism whereby the cyclone effects its separation have been capably treated in a series of previous papers.'-' Engineering and operational aspects of a few installations and laboratory tests have been chosen to emphasize the unique classification characteristics of the DorrClone and to illustrate its utility in certain difficult situations. Its use in coal washing and heavy-media operations are not considered. Some 25 or more industrial installations and applications of the DorrClone in the metallurgical fields are operating at present, ranging from single trial units to complete batteries composed of a multiplicity of units. The data were obtained in part from some of these, and in part from operations of units at the Westport Mill, the laboratories and testing plant of the Dorr Co. at Westport, Conn. The DorrClone was developed, in principle, by the research dept. of the State Mines, Limburg, Holland, during World War 11. Its first use was to dewater a —50 micron sand used as a dense medium in coal washing. The metallurgical wet cyclone was first publicized by Driessen and Yancey and Geer.6 ince then the cyclone has been studied as a means of de-watering, heavy media concentration, and fine size classification. The DorrClone is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. pulp to be treated is pumped through the feed nozzle, A, into the feed cylinder, B. The feed nozzle is of rectangular cross-section, the outermost edge being tangent to the feed cylinder walls. Feed shims, C, may be attached to the innermost walls to adjust the open area of the feed nozzle available to entering pulp. The tangential injection of feed under pressure supports the vortex action of the pulp that has been detained in the cyclone; the centrifugal forces of this vortex throw the coarse particles to the walls of the cone, D, where they collect and pass downward and out through the adjustable apex opening, E. The fine particles contained in most of the water that entered with the feed pulp move to the inner spiral of the vortex and flow out through the vortex finder, F, contained in the orifice plate, G, which forms the top of cyclone chamber. The overflow pulp may then spray freely into a spray chamber, H, surmounting the cyclone or pass directly into a 90' elbow, I, of somewhat larger diameter than the vortex finder. Installation Where more than one cyclone is to be installed, best overall efficiency and ease of control are obtained with equal distribution of both pulp volume and weight of solids among the cyclones, and with the same pressure being maintained at each cyclone feed nozzle. Fig. 3 is a suggested arrangement for feeding two or more cyclones in parallel. Feed pressure control: Under normal operating conditions it is not unusual for some surge to exist in the feed that is to be sent to the cyclone. As will be discussed later, surges in the solids content of the pulp are usually not of great operational consequence, but surges in feed volume are a problem. Several systems have been devised for absorbing surges in feed volume, each involving a surge tank. There is interest in the use of rhenium metal films as resistive elements in thin-film circcits, and already some zvork has been done using er)aporated rhenium films. It has been found that rheniim films protected from the atmosphere by an evaporated layer of silicon monoxide show excellent electrical stability. Unprotected films, however, are subject to aging- effects, notably the increase in electrical resistivity as a function of time. This phenomenon can be understood as primarily one of oxidation of the thin films. This paper is concerned with the study of the oxidation and crystallization behavior of such unprotected films. It has been found that the oxidation rates are a function of the substrate temperatures used during the deposition of Lhe metal films. The strictures observed in the films are correlated with the film resistivities and some data are presented to establish the existence of the various types of oxides of rhenium. ThERE is some interest in the use of thin films of rhenium metal as resistive elements in monolithic, thin-film integrated circuits. Some work has been done using evaporated films and it has been found that such films, if protected from the atmosphere by an evaporated layer of silicon monoxide, show excellent electrical stability up to temperatures of 500"." Rhenium films unprotected from the atmosphere tend to age and the electrical resistivity of the films increases as a function of time. Rhenium films, of the order of <100A thick, prepared by electron-beam evaporation techniques are found to oxidize very readily when exposed to dry air at room temperature. It would seem, therefore, that this aging phenomenon could be attributed to the oxidation of the metal films. In this investigation, the oxidation and crystallization behavior of thin films of rhenium evaporated onto silicon monoxide substrates were studied as a function of the substrate temperatures used during the evaporation. The films were examined using electron-microscopy and electron-diffraction techniques. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Rhenium metal was evaporated onto suitable prepared substrates which were heated to various temperatures. The evaporations were performed in a vacuum of approximately 5 x 1CT5 torr. The evaporation was carried out at a rate of approximately 10A per omin. The final film thickness was approximately lOOA and the resistance ranged from 5000 to 10,000 ohms per square. The substrates used for supporting the metal films were made by evaporating 75A of silicon monoxide onto freshly cleaved mica. The silicon monoxide film was then floated off the mica by immersing the composite in water. The film could then be picked up on a clean nickel grid. Silicon monoxide substrates were chosen because of their similarity to quartz and glass substrates commonly used for making thin-film resistors. Fuschillo, Gimpl, and McMas-ter have also shown that silicon monoxide films have only minor structural changes at temperatures up to 800°C. This fact simplified the interpretation of any changes observed in the electron micrographs or electron-diffraction patterns obtained from the deposited rhenium films. After the evaporations were completed, the substrates were cooled to room temperature, except where noted differently, before the coated substrates were removed from the vacuum system. All aging of the deposited films was done in a desiccator. The evaporated films were examined in an electron microscope equipped with a hot stage that would permit continuous observations of the samples up to temperatures of 1000°C. RESULTS A series of electron micrographs of the rhenium films deposited on the silicon monoxide substrates are shown to Figs. 1 to 3. In all cases, the metal films are approximately 100A thick and the micrographs were taken 1 hr after the deposition was completed. here was no apparent structure in the films deposited on the substrates held at the higher temperatures. Introductory.-There are many interesting and important events connected with the petroleum problem. The remarkable men who conceived the thought of transporting petroleum by pipe line, conserving the by-products of the commodity, and conducting extended investigation and research whereby the flash point of the oil was raised, its cost reduced and its Supply assured, are deserving of the gratitude of this nation. It was primarily the success attained by Captain Lucas, after his comprehensive search for oil in Texas and Louisiana, that was the impelling cause. which &apos;prompted the Navy Department to conduct the extensive series of liquid fuel-oil tests that were made from 1901 to 1903. The sensational discovery of oil at Spindle Top made a deep impression upon Rear Admiral George W. Melville, then Engineer-in-Chief of the Navy, and the discovery of the vast oil field in Texas convinced him that, within a generation, if not within a decade, crude petroleum was going to play a very important part in warfare, and that the commodity might possibly develop into a necessary munition of war. The United States&apos; Commanding Position as a Petroleum Producer.¬ In the study of the various problems relating to the world&apos;s production of crude petroleum, the position of the United States is one of commanding importance, whether viewed from the industrial or the military aspect. The present yield of this country is practically double that of the rest of the world, and, in view of the productive and prospective fields possessed by various countries, together with the comprehensive and exhaustive search that has been made throughout the world for petroleum, it is extremely probable that this lead will be maintained for the next decade. As regards the character of the crude-oil yield of different countries, America possesses the greater part of the supply that contains a paraffine base, and therefore a considerable portion at least of the American product produces the best illuminant. Of all the crude-oil distillates, kerosene is in many respects the most important, and the Appalachian product for this purpose is favored, particularly in the Far East, above that of any other petroleum yield of the world.

The mining town of Pribram is situated in Central Bohemia, on the western slope of the Heiliger Berg. 30 miles southwest from Prague. Birkenberg, the village ill which most of the shafts and ore-dressing establishments are situated, is built on a mountain of the same name. It is about a mile from Pribram, is 1700 feet above the sea, and is surrounded by graywacke rocks of Silurian origin, which arc intersectd by greenstone dikes, and in the southerly, southeasterly, arid southwesterly direction are bounded by granite. The graywacke formations consist on one side of graywacke sandstone and quartzite, and on the other of graywacke slate. These last are separated from the first in the immediate vicinity of the mines by a graywacke seam converted into clay. For many years this so-called clay seam (lettenkluft) was considered as a boundary of the ore deposits in both zones of graywacke. The graywacke formation L divided according to its harduess, structure, texture, and color, into fine, coarse, compact, slaty, whitish-gray, reddish-gray, and black graywacke. The miner divides the formation into four divisions. The first or lowest division, which is in contact with the granite, consists of a fine-grained dirty gray slate; the -second is a very fine to a very coarse schist, white to reddish-gray in color, and rich in quartz, but containing little mica; the third consists of a slate with a confused cleavage, which has a dirty gray, dark gray, and very often black color and is often graphitic in its composition; the fourth consists of a fine to coarse-grained graywacke schist, of a grayish-white or reddish-gray color, and rich in quartz. The cleavage in all four divisions strikes from northeast to southwest, and the dip is sometimes northwesterly, sometimes southerly, and often vertical. IN recent years, the damping capacity of metals has come to be recognized as an important index of certain types of structural change. In a number of instances, this property has proved to be particularly sensitive, but insufficient work has been done to permit a general inter-pretation. There is considerable question at the present time as to just what factors are responsible for the internal dissipation of energy when a metal is carried through a cycle of stress, and these factors must be ascertained if the value of the damping method as a metallurgical tool is to be determined. Since internal stresses are among the chief causes of dissipation of internal energy, or damping capacity, it was thought that a study of the changes in damping during the recovery and recrystalliza-tion of a cold-worked metal might throw some light upon the subject, particularly if the damping changes were correlated with other properties that are better understood. Probably more work has been done on the recrystallization phenomena of alpha brass than on any other metal, so this was chosen as the material for the present investigation. Damping measurements on brass have been made by Förster and Köster.1 They showed that the annealing of a brass that had been cold-drawn to 50 per cent reduction produced a rapid fall in the damping, a flat minimum occurring at approximately the temperature of recrystal-lization. The damping remained at a low value until grain growth was well under way and then it increased rapidly with increasing grain size. Köster and Rosenthal2 continued the work in greater detail. They pointed out that the damping decrease does not correspond to the hard-ness drop but occurs at a lower temperature, suggesting that the relief or redistribution of internal stresses has a large effect while the actual recrystallization effect is small. They also show the increase in damping at the higher annealing temperatures. Their curves are reproduced in Fig. 1.

Measurements of impact hardness of ß-brass are reported for a wide range of temperatures. Abrupt softening is observed when temperatures are raised above 425ºC, accompanied by abrupt widening of deformation bands in the deformed samples. Current theories of these effects, and of the lack of twinning, are discussed. HARDNESS1 and flow stress2 of a sample of ß-brass at room temperature depend upon the temperature from which the sample is quenched. It is believed that the state of order in the superlattice is responsible for this dependence—not the order within individual domains, which reaches near-perfection during the quench from any temperature, but the size of the domains which is presumed to be a minimum in the hardest samples, those quenched from temperatures near the critical disordering temperature of 468°C. Measurements of impact hardness made over a range of temperatures and microstructural studies of samples deformed both rapidly and slowly over a range of temperatures, reported herein, should be of aid in reaching a more complete understanding of the underlying factors controlling the properties of the disordered body-centered-cubic material and the ordered material. The recovery of the heavier components from a gas cap or retrograde pool is shown to be the greatest when the sand is cycled with a dry gas at a low pressure. This conclusion is in direct opposition to the belief that the most efficient production program is pressure maintenance and cycling at or near the dew point. The results are calculated from: (I) constant volume, variable composition pressure-volume-temperature tests on a mixture of trap gas and liquid from a producing well; (2) published equilibrium constant data and the measured composition of the dew-point material; and (3) the fact that in a sand section of homogeneous permeability, injected gas displaces reservoir gas nearly, quantitatively. The results are based on the simplifying assumption that variable permeability systems may be defined by the ratio of two statistical parameters, and that gas injected into an actual sand will behave as though the sand were composed of many layers, each of constant permeability. Introduction Pressure decline in gas-condensate type reservoirs is accompanied by the formation of a liquid phase throughout the reservoir. Over the past ten years the processing of the material from these types of reservoirs for the heavier hydrocarbon components and the return of the light fractions to the reservoir ("cycling") has become increasingly popular. It has often been stated that the purpose of such a program is to prevent the loss of the retrograde liquid phase formed in the reservoir. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of laboratory tests and computations concerned with several possible methods of producing a gas cap or condensate type of reservoir. The results show that the recovery of heavier hydrocarbons for this type of reservoir is not a maximum under conditions of cycling at or near the dew-point pressure. Instead, variations in permeability and the ability of the dry injected gas to revaporize condensate, point to cycling at a considerably reduced pressure as the optimum production-method. In addition the paper suggests a way of evaluating sands for their permeability variation. The calculations presented in the following sections of the paper are in terms of the production of the butanes and heavier fraction from the gas cap of a field which had an original pressure of approximately 3000 psi. Specifically, the calculations show: 1. To what extent the condensate formed in the reservoir after pressure decline can be recovered by the cycling of a dry absorber-plant gas through the sands. 2. Whether there would be greater recovery of hydrocarbons if cycling were instigated at the original reservoir pressure.

The existence of phosphate of lime within the State of Florida has been known for over a decade; but until the spring of 1887, the extent and value of its deposit.;, possibly with one exception, were unsuspected. In that year Col. T. S. Moorehead, induced by a statement made by Mr. J. F. Le Baron, examined the gravels of the Peace river, recognized the importance of the deposits, acquired such tracts as were regarded as desirable, and established the pebble-phosphate industry, making his first shipment in May, 1888, to the Scott Manufacturing Company, of Atlanta, Ga. The establishment of the pebble-phosphate industry upon Peace river was followed, a year later, by the discovery in Marion county of an entirely different class of phosphate, now commonly known as hard-rock phosphate. This discovery was made early in June, 1889, by Mr. Albertus Voght, in a well which he was sinking upon his place near the site of the present town of Donnellon, about 20 miles southwest of Ocala. To it, more than to any other cause, is due the rapid and remarkable development of the present great industry of the State. It was, however, Mr. John F. Dunn, of Ocala, who turned to advantage the accidental discovery of Mr. Voght. After acquiring a knowledge as to the chemical composition and value of the material, Mr. Dunn and hid associates purchased several thousand acres of land and organized the Dunnellon Phosphate Company for active operations. From Dunnellon as a center, prospecting rapidly extended in all directions, until at the present day important mines have been opened over a well-defined tract more than 200 miles long and about 6 miles wide. Oil well drilling muds prepared with lubricating aids such as oil, graphite or mica will not produce a sufficiently strong protective lubricant film for the bit bearing surfaces under high load conditions encountered in drilling operations. Consequently, the damage to the bearing surfaces resulting from the absence of such a film frequently results in a shortening of the drill bit life. Several different types of extreme pressure lubricating additives for use in muds have been developed. These arlrlitives are capable of providing a protective lubricating film for bearing surfaces subjected to high load pressures. A modified version of the Timken lubricant tester, an instrument commonly used for testing the extreme pressure lubricating properties of oils, is used for measuring and controlling the lubricating qualities of the mud. Comparison tests made in the laboratory with 55/8-in. tricone bits drilling on steel plates immersed in extreme pressure lubricating muds and conventional muds showed that the bearing life of those bits tested in the lrrbricating mud was three to four times greater than obtained with conventional muds. Drilling tests made with extreme pressure lubricating muds in West Texas increased over-all bit life three to fourfold, reduced drilling torque and wear on drill pipe and drill collars. INTRODUCTION Roller bit cones contain roller, ball and journal-type bearings that are subjected to very heavy loading during drilling operations in which the only lubricant available for these bearings is either water or drilling mud. These bearings must be able to operate satisfac- torily in order for the cutting structures on the surface of the cones to be fully utilized. Frequently, the bearings wear to the point that the cones freeze and the bit must be pulled before the cutting structures on the cones become worn. In some instances the bearings continue to turn with severe wear but the cones, which are held on the bit by the bearings, drop off; and this causes an expensive fishing job. In other instances the bearings wear to the point that the cones pinch in causing an undergauge hole and delays to ream the hole. The advantage of increasing bit bearing life is self-evident. Because of inability to control the internal wear of bits while drilling, it was felt that improvement of the lubricating qualities of the circulating mud would be helpful. However, the often-discussed lubricating property attributed to muds has been a rather vague and intangible one. The literature has implied that the oil-emulsion muds are more effective lubricants than non-emulsion muds. Actually, there has been no direct method of measuring the lubricating property of muds which would indicate that one mud was better than another; there has been no way to determine whether the lubricating property of any mud was adequate. Furthermore, in comparing lubricating properties of muds, two qualities should be considered—the coefficient of friction and the extreme pressure lubricating qualities. For example, graphite can reduce the coefficient of friction, but does not provide a strong enough lubricating film to protect bit bearings subjected to high loads. The primary object of the investigation reported herein was to find a method for prolonging the bearing life of drill bits; and considering the heavy loads used in drilling, it was felt necessary to find both a method of measuring lubricating properties under high load conditions and methods of establishing effective lubrication under these conditions. Extreme pressure lubrication deals with that realm of lubrication where metal surfaces are in rubbing contact with each other under very high pressures. Instability effects in semicanductor devices have long been attributed to the motion of charges on or within oxide layers on the surface. These effects are of critical importance in metal-insulator-semiconductor MIS) field-effect devices. For this reason, the capacitance-voltage or the conductance-voltage characteristic of these devices can be used as a sensitive detector to study charge transport and polarization effects in the oxide or insulator. A review is given of the results of such studies of thermally grown SiO2 as well as of other insulating films of importance in silicon technology. Three types of effects are distinguished. The first of these is the drift of mobile cations within the dielectric, examples being thermally grown SiO, which is often contaminated with sodium ions, and a variety of other glasses in which the mobile ions are a part of the glass composition. The second effect is a dipole-type polarization which occurs in phosphosilicate glass films obtained by reacting P2O5 with thermally grown SiO2. The third effect involves the transfer of charges between the dielectric and the silicon electrode. This occurs in silicon nitride and other deposited dielectrics. It is concluded that MIS studies have provided a powerful technique joy the study of charge transport and polarization effects in insulating films. The knowledge gained from these studies has led to an understanding of surface effects on conventional transistors and diodes as well as making possible stable MIS transistors. THE metal-insulator-semiconductor field-effect transistor is conceptually the oldest type of active semiconductor device.&apos; The earliest attempts at making this device were frustrated because of high surface state densities at the interface between the semiconductor and the gate insulation.&apos; However, by using a silicon substrate with thermally produced silicon dioxide as the gate insulation, this problem was solved and metal-silicon dioxide-silicon devices with good characteristics were made as early as 1960. 3 Yet it was still over 5 years before these devices became a commercial reality. This delay was largly due, not to surface states, but to stability problems associated with polarization effects within the insulating layer which caused the threshold voltage of the device to drift under temperature and bias treatments. The solution to these problems has not only made possible stable MIS devices, but it has added immensely to our understanding of failure mechanisms in conventional bipolar transistors and has added to the reliability of ali types of planar devices. In this review, we shall first describe the effects of various types of polarization phenomena on MIS device characteristics. Then, since thermally grown SiO, is by far the most important insulator used in these devices, we shall review historically the type of instabilities which have been observed in thermal oxides, the attempts at understanding and eliminating them, and the present status of the problem. We shall then turn our attention to the various deposited insulators which have been used, including lead glasses, phosphosilicate glass, vapor-deposited silicon oxide, and silicon nitride. Interestingly enough, many of these materials show polarization effects which are quite different from those generally observed in thermally grown SiO2. THE EFFECTS OF POLARIZATION PHENOMENA ON MIS CHARACTERISTICS The simplest MIS device and the one which has been most frequently used in the study of polarization effects is the MIS capacitor. Two modifications of this structure with single- and double-layer dielectrics are illustrated in Figs. l(a) and (b), respectively. The capacitance of this structure as a function of voltage applied to the metal gate electrode is plotted in Fig. 2 for the case of an n-type silicon substrate. When the silicon surface is accumulated (positive bias) the measured capacitance is just that of the insulating layer C. When the surface is inverted (negative bias), the capacitance is that of the insulator and a silicon depletion layer in series CoCs/(Co + Cs). As Lord Kelvin once said, scientific progress can be made only if accurate data are available: "unless you measure, you do not know." The Convergence Recorder For the observation of roof movements in mines the convergence recorder has shown that it will enable us to get some of the necessary information. Results with convergence recorders were first published by Winstanley and other English investigators for rapidly moving longwall faces. In their investigations the speed of work and the heavy overburden produced a considerable amount of absolute values of convergence in a short time. Under the conditions frequently encountered in our investigations in Central Pennsylvania, under shallow, overburden and in mines with slowly proceeding extraction, the movements observed were much less in absolute value, for an equal interval of time. This mas partly because the mines in which our studies were carried on frequently had idle days, sometimes four or five in succession. Therefore continuous records were not employed and a simple convergence gauge was built. In its first models, it consisted only of two telescoping tubes pressed against roof and floor by a coil spring. At the side of the lower tube a rule divided into 1/2-mm. divisions mas fixed and a knife-edge, which was attached to the upper tube, mas slid over the scale in case of convergence between roof and floor. While the larger motions could be read on this device, it seemed to be desirable to increase the accuracy by inserting between the two tubes a dial meter reading in 1/1000 in. Such a gauge was first built in April 1937 and installed for experimental purposes in a bituminous coal mine in Pennsylvania (Fig. I). It was read at least once daily, 24 hr. apart, and if feasible at shorter intervals. After several months of experience it can be said that this type of gauge answers the scientific as well as the practical needs. SPECIAL sands are those that are employed for special purposes. They have a limited use, as compared with sands for concrete and plaster. The sands discussed in this chapter are those used for foundry purposes, glass manufacture, filter beds, abrasive purposes, sandblasting, engine sand, sand for sheet asphalt, and furnace sand. These sands are almost invariably high in silica, consisting chiefly of quartz grains. In some-for instance, glass sands-freedom from ingredients other than silica, such as iron oxide, is important. Certain grades, like filter sand, require rather careful sizing, and in foundry sands the bond, usually clay, is important. One deposit may sometimes be used to supply several grades or types of sand by appropriate methods of screening and washing. The special sands discussed here are usually obtained from deposits of unconsolidated material but sands high in silica are derived occasionally from soft sand- stones that can be disintegrated easily. Requirements are not the same for all uses, and, while certain properties may be demanded, there are no officially adopted standard tests except for foundry sands. FOUNDRY SANDS Definition-Foundry sands include those siliceous sands that are used to make the forms for casting metals. If these are employed for making molds, they are known as molding sands; if for the cores that form the hollow spaces in the casting, they are called core sands. Naturally bonded sands are those containing a variable, though not usually large, amount of clay, which serves as a bond. Synthetic sands, now much used, represent an artificial mixture of sand with usually fire clay or bentonite. Core sands may be bonded with oil, cereal binders, resin, pitch, or other materials. The foundrymen apply the term "sharp sand" to one that is free from bond. Properties-The important properties to be tested at room temperature are texture or fineness, permeability, strength, deformation, and flowability. Those tested at elevated temperatures are compressive strength, expansion and contraction, sintering point, and durability. More attention probably has been given to research on the properties

COAL MINING, as well as all the other major in-dustries of Russia, is controlled by the Soviet Gov-ernment by means of organizations in each dis-trict, known as "Trusts," such as the "Kisel Coal Trust" in the Urals, the "Donugol Trust" in the Ukraine, etc., and each Trust functions as a unit, reporting direct to the chief of the department of the government at Moscow. The responsible head of each Trust is usually a mem-ber of the Communist party and, filtered through his organization, one generally finds a fair proportion of Communists in "key" or important positions, such as purchasing agents and local managers or superinten-dents, but in the majority of places requiring technical or professional knowledge, or trained brains and ex-perience, little or no attention is paid to a man&apos;s political opinion provided, of course, he "behaves himself." These different Trusts were authorized or ordered by the Central Committee at Moscow to investigate the methods of mining and type of mines developed in all other coal producing, countries of the world, and after a period of several years of intensive investigation and study reported back to headquarters that the modern American mines were the most efficient, recommending that the program for the rehabilitation of the Russian coal mining industry should follow the lines of American practice. The Trusts were then authorized to negotiate with American engineering firms for technical service for mine designs, and invited Americans to send commis-sions to Russia to prepare and submit to the Technical Council one or more projects for a complete modern American-type operation adapted to the local conditions. A "project" is a preliminary set of designs on the entire mine, top and bottom, with specifications. cost estimates, production costs, schedule of operation, budget of expen-diture, etc., and is quite an elaborate and sizable under-taking-I might say, it took six of us working tooth and nail for over three months to finish our first project.

MINERALS used primarily for personal adornment and decorative purposes are called precious stones. To be so prized, the stones must possess beauty of color, must not be too common, and must be hard enough to withstand ordinary wear. If transparent, they must have brilliancy and fire. Almost one hundred minerals have been used as precious stones, the noble gems being the diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire; pearls are frequently included by courtesy. These gem stones, however, are sometimes equaled in beauty by fine opals, aquamarines, ourmalines, spinels, chrysoberyls (both cat&apos;s-eye and alexandrite), and spodumenes (hiddenite and kunzite). The Greeks, Romans, and medieval Europeans grouped together gem stones according to color and degree of transparency, and only as the niceties of mineralogy began to be known, about a century ago, was it realized how many different minerals have the beauty required of gem stones. Pliny, for example, did not distinguish between rubies and the red varieties of spinel and garnet, although he conjectured that the beryl and emerald were one mineral. GENERAL SURVEY Early man treasured bright colored berries, attractive shells, white teeth of wild animals and brightly colored pebbles, and used them as personal ornaments. In the eastern hemisphere, the earliest stones used were members of the quartz family (100,000 to 75,000 B.C.); then obsidian and amber (50,000 to 25,000 B.C.); the jade minerals, fluorspar and jet (22,000 to 7000 B.C.); turquoise (7000 to 3400 B.C.); lapis lazuli and garnet (prior to 3500 B.C.) ; emerald (2000 to 1800 B.C.) ; sapphire, ruby and diamond (800 to 500 B.C.). Indeed, gem mining is the oldest form of mining, and before any metals were known primitive man recognized about 18 gems and decorative stones. At first he sought them in stream gravels and residual deposits but by 3400 B.C. the turquoise mines of the Sinai Peninsula were operated.
