C. G. McLachlan—In the foregoing paper the author has presented a very neat method for calculating the solution recovery for a countercurrent flowsheet. He has, however, based his calculations, as he states, on the assumption that "the concentration of dissolved value must be exactly the same in the overflow and underflow of any thickener." This assumption, which is usually made regardless of the type of calculation used, is "not strictly correct because diffusion of the dissolved gold in the solution associated with the solids as it progresses through the countercurrent system is far from being instantaneous, with the result that on a ton for ton basis, the assay of the solution in the thickener underflow is higher than in the corresponding thickener overflow. An agitator introduced into the flowsheet between thickeners will reduce, but not entirely eliminate, this difference. In practice we have found that the best way to take care of this condition— in addition to the use of one or more intermediate agitators—is to circulate 20 pct or 25 pct more solution than called for by the cheoretical calculation. This presents no difficulty provided that adequate thickener capacity is provided in the original design of the countercurrent circuit.

An equation governing the concept of constitutional supercooling under the combined effect of concentration and temperature gradients was used to produce platelike Al-CuAl2 eutectic composites for mechanical properties studies. Compression specimens were prepared from a single-colony Al-CuA12 eutectic composite ingot, 2 in. in diam and 12 in. long. The specirrzens were cut such that the platelets were oriented parallel, 45 deg, and perpendicular to the compression direction. Since the ingot was of eutectic composition, The aluminum-rich matrix could dissolve 5. 7 wt pct Cu in solid solution, and therefore could be strengthened by precipitation hardening. Specimens were tested at room temperature and elevated temperatures in the unidirectionally solidified, solution-treated, and solution-treated plus aged conditions. The results were compared with those for the conventionally cast and extruded specimens. For the controlled material, the highest strengths were obtained with platelets oriented parallel to the compression axis. In the unidirectionally solidified condition, 0.2 pct offset yield strength was 32,000 psi; however, this was increased to 59,000 psi by solution treatment, and further increased to 90,500 psi by solution treatment and aging. The attainment of high compressive strengths in the Al-CuAl2 eutectic composites was interpreted in terms of the buckling of elastic CuAl2 platelets in the plastically deformed a aluminum matrix. SINCE the discovery of high-strength whiskers,' scientists and engineers have made significant progress toward incorporating these whiskers into metallic matrices, forming composites for basic studies and structural application. The general procedure is to produce the whiskers first and then to bind them together with a ductile matrix. The production of whisker-reinforced composites requires tedious handling techniques,, particularly when it is desired to align the whiskers unidirectionally. Furthermore, the interfacial bond between the whisker and the matrix is frequently poor3 so that the resulting composite has strengths lower than expected. These disadvantages are generally true for any metallic composite produced by physically mixing the components. It is possible to eliminate these shortcomings by growing whiskers directly in the matrix material by eutectic solidification.4-8 In eutectic solidification, the matrix phase and a whisker phase are grown approximately simultaneously from a liquid of the same overall composition at the eutectic temperature. If the solidification process is controlled by varying the freezing rate, the temperature gradient, and the impurity content, platelike or filamentlike whiskers are produced parallel to the growth direction. The morphology of the grown-in reinforcement, i.e.. plates or rods, generally depends on the volume fraction9 of the dispersed phase present in the eutectic mixture. Since the unidirectional eutectic solidification is a one-step process, i.e., the liquid-solid transformation process, an excellent interfacial bond between the matrix and whisker is obtained. An additional advantage is that no special handling technique for whiskers is needed. In recent years, many investigators10-13 have studied the effects of growth variables on the micromorpholo-gies of binary eutectic alloys produced by controlled solidification. The study of their mechanical properties was initiated by Kraft and coworkers14-16 who found that the strength of cast A1-CuA12 eutectic alloy can be increased threefold by unidirectional solidification. In the A1-AL3Ni system, a strength of 50,000 lb per sq in, was reported for the unidirectionally solidified eutectic alloy, a value five times higher than for conventionally cast material. Thus, the unidirectionally solidified eutectics can be used as fiber-reinforced composite materials. In this paper, we shall first use an equation17 as a guide for the production of eutectic composites in general and the Al-33 wt pct Cu eutectic in particular. Experimental data supporting the theoretical prediction are given. Second, the compressive properties of the grown A1-33 wt pct Cu eutectic were thoroughly investigated in terms of platelet orientations, thermo-mechanical treatment, and temperature. The experimental data are interpreted in terms of a buckling model of fibers in elastic fiber-plastic matrix metallic composites. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Crystal Growth. The following experimental procedure was adopted for the production of controlled microstructures in the A1-33 wt pct Cu eutectic alloy. The controlled solidification was accomplished with a movable resistance-wound radiation furnace. Fig. 1 is a schematic drawing of the solidification apparatus. A water-cooled chiller was placed into a degassed high-purity graphite crucible containing the charge. Rubber stoppers wrapped with aluminum foil were used to seal both ends of the quartz tube through which a dried argon atmosphere was passed under a slight positive pressure. At both ends of the quartz tube, radiation shields were used to minimize heat loss. The quartz tube was held in place by two steel clamps and the furnace was drawn vertically by means of a steel cable against the steel truss which permits the furnace to move without touching the tube. The drive mechanism consisted of two pulleys, a counter weight.

(communication to the Secretary): In presenting some notes on the "Heine's Blue Test" Mr. Smith expresses a preference for fresh standards and a cheaper bottle; but this is rather a reversion to the old method, since I devised in 1897 the newer method of preparation and preservation of' permanent standards, which were not used with any success in the original method. Many busy western assayers no doubt value a method for preparing a permanent set of standards in air-tight glass-stoppered bottles, whose use brings the method as near perfection as one could desire as regards rapidity of color-reading and avoidance of unnecessary work. Mr. Smith notes that his color-readings were compared with an electrolytic assay of another ore-sample, and that my electrolytic assays were made on the " blue test" solution from colorimetric assay. He omits, however, reference to the fact, showing the advantage of my procedure, that the next column in table of

The surface, gain boundary, and twin boundary energies, as well as the surface diffusion coefficient, of cobalt were determined from tests at 1354°C in pure hydrogen. A value of 1970 ergs per sq cm was calculated for the surface energy, using the zero creep method. It was possible to measure the creep strains at room temperature because the phase transformation was accompanied by negligible irreversible strain and no kinking. Established techniques based on interference microscopy were used to obtain values for the other three properties. The gain boundary and twin boundary energies were 650 ad 12.7 ergs per sq cm, respectively, while a value of 2.75 x l0 sq cm per sec was determined for the surface dufusion coefficient. In the course of a general study of cobalt and cobalt-base alloys, information was required about the surface energy of cobalt. Hence, the present program was undertaken to measure the interfacial free energy, or, briefly, the surface energy, of the solid-vapor interface of cobalt. The microcreep method was selected for this measurement because other surface properties could also be determined from the accompanying thermal grooving at grain boundaries and twin boundaries. A brief summary of the methods for determining the various surface properties follows. At very high temperatures and under applied stresses too small to initiate slip, small-diameter wires will change in length by the process of diffu-sional creep described by Herring.1 The wires acquire the familiar bamboo structure and increase or decrease in length in direct proportion to the net force on the specimen. For a specimen experiencing a zero creep rate, the applied load, wo, necessary to offset the effects of the surface energy, y,, and grain boundary energy, y b, is given by the relation: where r is the wire radius and n is the number of grains per unit length of wire. The first results obtained from wire specimens were reported by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff.' udin3 later corrected these results for the effect of grain boundary energy. The grain boundary energy is determined from measurements of the dihedral angle 8 of the groove which develops by thermal etching at the grain boundary-free surface junction. For an equilibrium configuration: Measurements of the angle 8 can be made on the creep specimens4'5 or on sheet material, as was done in this investigation by a method employing interference microscopy.= If the vapor pressure is low, the rate at which grain boundary grooves widen is determined primarily by surface diffusion and, to a lesser extent, by bulk diffusion. The surface diffusion coefficient, D,, is obtained from interferometric measurements of the groove width as a function of the annealing time, t. As predicted by Mullins~ and verified by experiment, the distance, w,, between the maxima of the humps formed on either side of the grain boundary increases in proportion to if grooving proceeds by surface diffusion alone. For this case: where fl is the atomic volume and n is the number of atoms per square centimeter of surface. When volume diffusion also contributes to the widening, the surface diffusion contribution can be extracted from the data by the method described by Mullins and shewmon.8 Where a pair of twin boundaries intersects a free surface, a groove with an included angle of A + B (using the groove figure and notations of Robertson and shewmong) forms by thermal etching at one twin boundary-free surface junction. If the "torque terms", i.e., the terms in the Herring10 equations describing the orientation dependence of the surface energy, are sufficiently large, an "inverted groove" with an included angle of 360 deg-A'-B' develops at the other intersection. The angles A + B and A' + B' are measured interferometrically. When the angle, , between the twinning plane and the macroscopic surface plane is near 90 deg, the twin boundary energy is calculated from the relation: 1) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Five-mil-diam wire containing 56 parts per million impurities was used for making ten creep specimens. These specimens had about 15 mm gage lengths with appended loops of wire and carried loads (the specimen weight below the midpoint of the gage length) ranging from 3.7 to 149.8 mg. The wires were hung inside a can made from 99.6 pct pure cobalt sheet. Beneath the wires were placed small specimens of 20-mil-thick, 99.9982 pct pure cobalt sheet from which the relative twin boundary and grain boundary energies and the surface diffusion coefficient were measured. All the specimens were annealed at a temperature of 1354" i 3°C which is 92 pct of the absolute melting point of cobalt. The furnace atmosphere was 99.9 pct pure hydrogen that was purified further by a Deoxo catalytic unit, magnesium perchlorate, and a liquid-nitrogen cold trap. The current ejyiciency of aluminum cells was derived from the metal produced over a period of time and the theoretical faradaic yield. The difference in the actual amount of aluminum in the cathode at the beginning and end of the period must be determined. The weight of aluminum in the cathode was calculated from the dilution of an added quantity of impurity metal. Use of multiple indicator metals, copper, manganese, and titanium, demonstrated that the weight of aluminum in cells can be determined to within 1 pct with routine but careful chemical analyses. Over intervals of the order of 30 days, current efficiencies reliable to within 1 pct can be obtained. INVESTIGATIONS beginning with those of Pearson and waddington ,' through the most recent published work of Georgievskii,9-11 illustrate the direct relationship between the composition of the anode gas and the applicability of analysis of anode gases to the control of alumina reduction cells. McMinn12 noted the lack of an independent method for measuring cell production efficiency over the short term. There is no doubt that changes in the current efficiency are immediately reflected in the composition of anode gases. However, the accuracy of faradaic yields calculated from gas analyses depends upon the degree of interaction between primary anode gas and Carbon.6 A conventional industrial practice of obtaining long-term current efficiency for production units from mass balances and quantity of electricity is generally insensitive to the impact of planned control of any one or more of the influential reduction cell parameters such as temperature, alumina concentration, and mean interelectrode distance. Consequently, there is a real need in the aluminum industry for a procedure to obtain the absolute cell current efficiency over a short term—10 to 30 days—both for the calibration of values obtained from gas analysis6 and for evaluating the effect of controlling specific parameters in the reduction process. The amount of aluminum produced may be determined by considering the cathode pool as a reduction of an impurity metal in aluminum. Analyses over a period will show a decreasing concentration of the impurity due to the accumulation of aluminum solvent. The increase in aluminum inferred from analyses is the amount produced by the cell during the period. Combining weights of the cell aluminum in the cathode at the beginning and end of a specific period, weights of aluminum tapped and the quantity of electricity passed during the interval will yield the current efficiency. Smart,I3 Lange;4 Rempel,15 Beletskii and Mashovets,16 and winkhaus17 have used dilution techniques to determine aluminum inventory in alumina reduction cells. A technique for determining the weight of aluminum in production cells by addition of small amounts of copper to the aluminum cathode was described by smart.13 The precision in values of the aluminum reservoir through dilution of copper in the cathode ranged from about 1 to 3 pct depending upon the quantity of copper added in the range 0.2 to 0.01 wt pct, respectively. Because the method appears so direct and apparently simple, one would not anticipate difficulties in application to industrial cells. The objective of this study was to resolve this problem associated with the trace metal dilution technique for determining the amount of aluminum in a cell. The approach in evaluating trace metal dilution as a basic factor in determining the weight of aluminum in the cell reservoir, and the absolute current efficiency of the Hall-Heroult cell, was to dilute more than one trace metal in the aluminum cathode so that we could discriminate among complications arising from physical mixing, the possibility of separation of intermetallic compounds, loss of the added elements, and chemical detection. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS These experiments are not complex but require standardized procedures. The technique involves addition of the trace metals to the cathode, knowing when these metals are homogeneously distributed in the liquid cathode, timing of the sampling, employing accurate and precise analytical methods, using reliable procedures for monitoring the amount of electricity passed through the cell, and accurate weighing of aluminum removed from the cell during the particular period. More accurate results might be obtained if the increment in concentration of the added indicator metals were of the order of 0.1 to 0.2 wt pct. The method must be applicable to production units and, hence, the contamination of the aluminum minimized. For this reason, the concentration of trace metals in the cathode was kept below 0.07 wt pct and generally at 0.04 wt pct level. Trace quantities of copper, manganese, titanium, and silicon are already present in virgin aluminum and are suitable as additives from electrochemical and analytical points of view. Concentration of silicon is quite dependent upon the characteristics of the raw materials and was not used extensively in this work. Chemical Analyses. All instrumental analyses require calibration against an absolute technique such as a gravimetric, volumetric, or spectrophotometric method which represents the ultimate in sensitivity, precision, and accuracy. Though production began in Canada only a short time after the discovery of oil in the United States, it has never attained large proportions, and if we were to judge entirely by the past the reserves of Canada would be put at a very low figure. There are only two areas from which oil is marketed at the present time; one, the old district around Petrolia in southern Ontario, and the other is the small Sheep Creek field near Calgary in Alberta. The former district has produced between 200,000 and 800,000 bbl. annually for the past 40 years, recent figures being near the minimum amount. Sheep Creek has produced about 12,000 bbl. annually for the past five years. The known reserves in proved territory in each of these fields are exceedingly small, when considered in terms of world reserves. The chief hope of Canada for reserves of considerable magnitude lies in the western provinces. Sedimentary rocks similar to those in the productive fields of the United States occupy thousands of square miles in the western provinces, so that it seems likely that somewhere within this great area the peculiar conditions necessary for the presence of oil pools will be found. Prospecting is being carried on energetically by several large companies, as well as by many independents. The Dominion Government, which controls most of the public lands, is pursuing a fairly liberal policy toward the prospector, which should stimulate wild-catting, although the province of British Columbia, which controls public lands within t.hat province, is at present unwilling to give adequate encouragement to make wildcatting attractive. As there is really no assurance that any productive pools will be found in western Canada, the estimates of reserves are subject to a wide possibility of error. In making estimates, the various areas within which geologic conditions are more or less uniform are discussed separately; the estimates given for each area are not given with the idea that there is a reasonable probability of their eventually proving to be correct. It is hoped that an average of these estimates, taken together with those made for other undeveloped countries, will give a correct total of reserves

A premature explosion might be described as an explosion that, occurs before the miner expects it. Notwithstanding that it is unexpected, a premature is generally within the miner's control. A hangfire explosion is a blast that occurs after the miner expects it,, and in all instances, except where the explosives or blasting accessories are defective, hangfire explosions are within the miner's control. Causes of Premature Explosions Generally, there are seven methods of shot-firing in anthracit,e mines; namely: (1) cap and fuse with dynamite, (2) fuse with pellet powder, (3) squib with black powder or pellets, (4) exploders and delays with dynamite or black powder, (5) exploders with dynamite, (6) delay ignitors with black powder or pellets, (7) electric squibs with black powder or pellets. Cap and Fuse.—This method of firing seems to produce the greatest number of premature explosions. This is not solely because of the method, but is the result of mispractices which are possible with this method of firing. The two most common mispractices followed with cap-and-fuse blasting are the firing of multiple holes and the use of short fuse.. In the firing of multiple holes by cap and fuse, investigations have shown that in nearly every instance where the miner was injured by this method of firing he remained too long at the face lighting the several fuses, so that the first shot went off before he could reach a place of safety. Such accidents could have been avoided either by accurate judgment by the miner of the relative lengths of the fuses or by the use of electric firing. Rules exist in nearly every mine forbidding the lighting of more than one hole at a time where the cap-and-fuse method of firing is practiced. Where it is desirable to fire more than one hole at a, time, electric firing should be used. It is difficult to understand why so many premature explosions result from the use of short fuses, inasmuch as the cost of fuse is practically a negligible item in the expense of a day's work. Notwithstanding this, however, we frequently find miners using short lengths of fuse in an effort to save one or two cents per hole, or about 15 to 20 # in a day. A practice

It is perhaps not widely realized that extraction and saturation processes carried out on oil well core samples alter the properties of these samples to varying degrees. On the other hand it is felt by some that quick-freezing of core samples increases their permeability and porosity significantly. Accordingly, laboratory tests were carried out on 49 pairs of horizontally adjacent samples in order to differentiate between the effect of quick-freezing per se on permeability and porosity of the samples, as distinguished from the effect of the identical saturation treatment on permeability and porosity of the companion samples. Also, additional field data were obtained on comparison of frozen vs unfrozen companion samples. LABORATORY INVESTIGATION OF FREEZING us SATURATION EFFECTS Procedure The samples used in these tests were two-cm cubes cut in horizontally adjacent pairs from cores from eight Gulf Coast and Mid-Continent wells, which cores had not previously been frozen. These samples were extracted with carbon tetrachloride, dried, and air permeabilities run in the conventional manner. They were then evacuated and saturated with brine of 25,000 ppm sodium chloride content, and porosities determined by gain in weight. The samples were partially desaturated by evaporation down to an average brine saturation of 68 per cent. One sample from each pair was quick-frozen by covering with dry ice after wrapping in a single layer of paper, and allowed to remain frozen for about two hours; the companion sample from each pair was not frozen. After thawing the frozen sample, all samples were immersed in tap water overnight in order to leach out most of the brine. Air permeabilities were re-run, and the samples were again saturated with brine to determine a second porosity value. For purposes of averaging of data, the samples were grouped according to four permeability ranges, from 0 to 10, 10 to 100, 100 to 1,000, and 1,000 to 3,840 md. Average permeability and porosity changes for the frozen vs the unfrozen adjacent samples are shown in Table 1. Discussion As may be seen from Table 1, the averages of the per cent permeability increases for the quick-frozen samples ranged from 3.8 to 12.9 per cent among the four permeability groups. The average changes among the four groups of unfrozen companion samples ranged from a decrease of 0.2 per cent to an increase of 9.3 per cent. There was no particular correlation of these changes with magnitude of permeability; however, the increase for each group of frozen samples paralleled the increase for the corresponding unfrozen samples. The differences between the two sets of values are believed to be a valid indication of the effect of the quick-freezing in itself, since the treatment of the two samples in each pair was identical except for freezing. The permeability changes which are strictly the result of the quick-freezing are shown in the sixth column of Table 1. These range from a decrease of 0.9 per cent to an increase of 4.0 per cent; the overall weighted average is 1.2 per cent, as compared to an average increase of 6.8 per cent caused by the saturation treatment of the samples not frozen. The average porosity changes are in general smaller than the changes in permeability, and range from a decrease of 2.3 per cent to an increase of 3.3 per cent. The overall weighted average change ascribed to the quick-freezing is 1.0 per cent of porosity. Many factors can contribute to the changes in permeability and porosity observed when subjecting cores to the simple processes used in these tests. Such are: hydration and swelling of clay, adsorption of ions, changes in surface structure and wettability, expansion and compression effects due to ice formation, shrinking and cracking, leaching of salts and colloids, displacement of particles resulting in either blocking or enlarging of pore openings. Whatever particular mechanisms are involved. however, it is apparent not only from this study but also from other investigations in the literature' not directly concerned with quick-freezing, that the effects produced by commonly used extraction, saturation and drying techniques may be of considerable magnitude The results of this study indicate that for the particular samples and techniques used, such effects are of the order of five to six times the effect of quick-freezing. insofar as changes in permeability are concerned. It may be argued that these samples might not include extremely shaly material where the effect of freezing upon permeability may be much greater. However, had such material been available for these tests, it would undoubtedly have been very susceptible also to alteration by the extraction and saturation treatment used. To investigate this point further, the individual sample data were re-grouped according to the magnitude of the average per cent permeability increases for the pairs of samples, irrespective of permeability. INVESTIGATIONS of the constitution of the system Mg-Ba were first made by Grube and Dietrich1 between 0 and 47 atomic pct Ba and then by Klemm and Dincke1acker" ver the whole composition range. Klemm and Dinckelacker corroborated intermediate phases of the approximate formulas Mg9Ba and Mg4Ba, and showed a third compound to have the formula Mg2Ba, rather than Mg5Ba, as suggested by Grube and Dietrich. Mg2Ba had been previously recognized by Hellner and Laves3 s a MgZn2 (C14) type structure. The main discrepancies between the results of Grube and Dietrich and those of Klemm and Dinckelacker exist, however, in the liquidus temperatures and solidification equilibria of alloys containing more than about 10 atomic pct Ba. The liquidus temperatures measured by Grube and Dietrich, and the outline of the liquidus of Klemm and Dinckelacker are plotted in Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale. Although there are strong reasons to prefer the results of Klemm and Dinckelacker, it was considered worthwhile to remeasure liquidus temperatures of some alloys in the controversial composition range. The alloys, made up from sublimed magnesium and 99.5 wt pct pure barium, were melted in an Armco-iron crucible in a dynamic argon atmosphere. Thermal analyses were taken using a Speedomax auto- matic recorder. Careful stirring during the solidification process was required in order to avoid segregation. After thermal analysis some of the cast alloys were chemically analyzed. The intended and analyzed compositions of the ten alloys prepared are listed in Table I. Since standard barium determinations cannot differentiate between barium present as element and as oxide, both the barium and magnesium contents of the alloys were analyzed. The fact that the sum of barium and magnesium was close to 100 pct in each case was taken as evidence that no excessive oxidation had occurred. The liquidus temperatures measured are listed in Table I and plotted in Fig. 1. As can be seen, they are in good agreement with the liquidus found by Klemm and Dinckelacker. This leaves no doubt that the thermal results of Grube and Dietrich above 10 atomic pct Ba are incorrect. Recent investigations1,2,3,4 have conclusively shown that the strain hardened state of metals depends upon the temperature and strain rate of pre-straining as well as on the total plastic strain. A typical example of the effect of temperature of prestraining on the work hardening of metals is reproduced in Fig 1. When pure aluminum is strained at liquid nitrogen temperature the upper solid stress-strain curve (OFGH) is obtained. But when pure aluminum is prestrained to e2 = 0.153 at atmospheric temperature and the test is then completed at liquid nitrogen temperature, the curve OBCD results. Thus a prestrain E2 = 0.153 at atmospheric temperature gives a flow stress C when continued at liquid nitrogen temperature, whereas a higher flow stress G results when the specimen is strained exclusively at liquid nitrogen temperature to the same strain E2. Consequently the metal strain hardens more rapidly at the lower temperature. Obviously the strain alone is not a measure of the strain hardened state in metals. Inspection of Fig 1 reveals that the flow stress at C is identical with that at F. This fact suggests that a strain E2 = 0.153 at atmospheric temperature induces the same work hardened state as a strain E1 = 0.058 at liquid nitrogen temperature. But this concept of equivalent strains is also in error. If curve CD is shifted to the left so that point C falls on F, point D becomes D'. Inspection of the curves reveals that the rate of increase of stress with strain at C is greater than the rate of increase of stress with strain at F even though the flow stresses are identical. Consequently C and F do not represent identical work hardened states. It therefore becomes important to ascer- tain how the strain hardened states at C and F might differ from each other. In a more recent report1 it was shown that straining at higher rates of strain increases the amount of strain hardening in a manner quite analogous to straining at lower temperatures. These observations suggested that the flow stress is not only a function of the strain but also a function of the strain rate-temperature history of straining, perhaps in accord with the Zener- ?H Hollomon parameter p = Ee /RT (where

ASIDE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute participates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the Institute itself has five major awards to make annually for excellence in technical papers, as follows: The Robert W. Hunt Medal and Prize, The J. E: Johnson, Jr. Award, The Lewisohn Platinum Prize to senior members, and the James Douglas Medal. ROBERT W. HUNT MEDAL AND PRIZE The partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to' establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes; first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term" iron and steel" shall be determined by the sub-committee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition. of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A sub-committee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October Meeting, and the award be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be ,designated "The Hunt Medallist." This prize is administered by the Iron and Steel Committee. J. E. JOHNSON, JR. AWARD This award is made from the income of a fund of $3000 donated by Mrs. Margaret Hilles Johnson in memory of her husband, J. E. Johnson, Jr., who was a prominent engineer, author of two valuable volumes on iron blast-furnace construction and practise, vice-chairman of the Institute's Iron and Steel Committee, and a frequent contributor of papers to the Institute's Transactions. This prize is administered by the Iron and Steel Committee. The intent of the donor is to encourage young men in creative work in branches of the metallurgy or manufacture of pig iron with which the professional activities of Mr. Johnson were chiefly concerned. The control of the fund and distribution of the awards having been vested in the Board of Directors of the Institute, this Board has made 'the following regulations concerning it:

For the past year, MBD has been engaged in a lively discussion on a name change for the Division. To complicate things, more than one name change has been proposed! There has been much discussion on the subject, as anyone who has attended the Annual MBD Business Meeting or read [jE] knows. The position of many of our members is well known. There is, however, one group that has not been heard from. These are the future members-the present students and those even younger who are yet to elect our profession. As one who has traversed the academic-industrial interface several times, I think I am qualified to speak for this group. Before going further I think it wise to state unequivocally that our Division should adequately represent our profession. The whole profession is just too small to chop into a plethora of pieces: "I'm not a mineral processing engineer, I'm an ore dresser-well, actually, I specialize in comminution, specifically in grinding, mostly in autogeneous grinding-primary autogeneous grinding that is-and my 'thing' is really iron ores, taconites, mind you!" Enough to confuse even those that keep the faith, and certainly we can't build a profession on such narrow pieces. Either an employer can hire a professional who knows the entire profession or he can't. As more and more companies search out opportunities in the mining and metallurgical fields and as environmental considerations bring into question even our technically well proven processes and procedures, there is a greater need than ever be- fore for a well-rounded mineral processing engineer well versed in all of the process possibilities. What is needed is one who can take an ore-or municipal trash for that matter-and produce there from a valuable product by the most appropriate means. It doesn't really matter if this is done physically, chemically or thermally.

We have recently found that many lots of Zircaloy-2 and -4 tubing tested in tension deform to cross section shapes that are "polyhedral" rather than circular. The noncircular cross sections seem to result from a circumferential variation in plastic proper -ties and, therefore, in texture. We examined the diffracted X-ray intensity from (OOOl), {1010), {ll20}, and {1011} planes parallel to the tubing surface around the entire circumference. Tubing that deformed to a circular cross section showed <5 pct variation in diffraction intensity around the circumference from any of these planes. Greater intensity variations were found for all the tubing materials that developed non-circular cross sections during deformation. In each instance the number of intensity maxima and minima was consistent with the number of sides of the &apos;polyhedral" cross section. THE effects of crystallographic texture on the mechanical properties of zirconium, zirconium alloys, and other anisotropic hexagonal materials such as titanium and hafnium have been intensively studied. If the natural crystallographic anisotropy of these materials could be controlled by selected fabrication operations, a material could be produced with a texture, or preferred orientation, in which the maximum strength directions are in the stress directions of the structure. The permissible stress levels of the structure could then be increased. Rittenhouse and Pickle-simerl have shown that highly textured Zircaloy-2 plate can vary from 52,000 to 70,000 psi in tensile yield and from 62,700 to 122,000 psi in compressive yield strengths as a function of specimen orientation. Similar texture effects have been observed in Zircaloy tubing, whose mechanical properties differ depending upon whether the tubing has basal poles predominantly radial or tangential and upon the mode of testing. These same texture effects might be troublesome if the texture in the tubing is not uniform around the tube walls. This paper is concerned with the effects of nonuniform texture on the strain behavior of commercial Zircaloy tubing. BACKGROUND Previously, various lots of commercial Zircaloy tubing were tested under selected stress conditions as part of a program to determine the four quadrants of the yield locus. One of the testing procedures was uniaxial tension and it is the influence of texture variations on the tensile deformation behavior of the tubing that is of interest here. The effect of texture on the strain behavior in tubing is very apparent from a uni-axial tensile test.2 This behavior is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1 for three different tubing textures: 1) basal poles predominantly in the radial direction; 2) basal poles predominantly in the tangential direction, and 3) basal poles equally distributed between the radial and tangential directions. In the first example most of the grains are oriented for prism slip to operate to allow axial lengthening and diametral reduction of the tube. Reduction in wall thickness requires {1122} twinning, a more difficult operation than slip.* In the second example, the texture is such that *The singleCrystal analogy will be used quite often in this paper when strong texturesare being discussed. Diametral reduction requires twinning and again should be more difficult to accomplish. A specimen with basal poles equally distributed between the radial and tangential directions should exhibit about equal diametral and wall strains.* Table I shows the *Diametral strain is accomplished by a combination of circumferential and longitudinal strains. But, for the purposes of this paper, it will be considered as a strain causing a change in the length of a specified diameter.__________ strain behavior of two lots of tubing with different textures. The first tube has a texture with basal poles equally distributed between the radial and the tangential directions. The ratio of true thickness strain to true diametral strain is almost unity. The second tube has a predominantly radial basal pole texture and it is apparent that most of the total strain has occurred by diameter reduction, just as one would predict. There is over three times as much diametral strain as thickness strain. RESULTS We found that specimens from certain lots of commercially fabricated tubing did not retain round cross sections during uniaxial testing. Instead, the speci-

BORN a Chicagoan, on Aug;. 31, I879. Oscar Johnson lived in that city until young manhood. As a youth delivering newspapers he set his sight on the l university of Chicago and at sixteen years of age he began working summer vacations in the foundry of the Pullman Company. Misfortune came to his family during the summer of 1898 when tuberculosis took his only sister and brother. His mother, apprehensive of Oscar&apos;s health, urged him to try the West at least for awhile. So late summer found Oscar in Salt Lake City, employed by the Trent Engineering & Machinery Co. At that time it was busy building equipment for use in the war with Spain. Though he did not know it then, Oscar war was laying the groundwork for his present membership on the Mining Equipment Industry Advisory Committee of the W.P.B., a post which keeps him commuting between Denver and Washington.

BORON as a hardenability agent of commercial importance has been the subject of extensive study in recent years. It has been suggested in the past that boron increases hardenability by combining with nitrogen, thus rendering it innocuous.&apos; More recently it has been proposed that boron increases hardenability by reducing the free energy of sites of ferrite and pearlite nucleation.&apos; The segregation of boron to grain boundaries, the primary site of nucleation, would account for the large hardenability effect of minute additions of boron in steel. This grain boundary theory has found general acceptance while the concept of boron as a nitrogen scavenger has been disregarded. However, the interaction of boron and nitrogen in steel is considered to be important to hardenability because boron may be made ineffective by combination with nitrogen.". * The present work was undertaken to examine some of the effects of boron and nitrogen arid their interaction in steel. A base composition of moderate hardenability was chosen. This was a 0.35 pct C steel containing 2.50 pct Ni and 0.30 Mo. This composition was used because it contained no strong carbide, nitride, or Table I. The other alloys examined were modifications of the base composition and contained nitrogen, boron, or nitrogen plus boron. The compositions of the four alloys used are listed in Table I. The alloys were vacuum melted from electrolytic iron, electrolytic nickel, ferromolybdenum, and fer-roboron. When required, nitrogen was added by admitting a partial pressure of nitrogen over the melt after vacuum melting. The alloys were cast into 21h-in. diam ingots and hot rolled to %-in. sq bars. No ingot pattern was discernible on the polished and etched cross sections of the hot-rolled bars. The alloys were normalized at 1650°F, then machined into standard %-in. diam end-quench hardenability test bars. Four different austenitizing treatments were used: 60 rnin at 1550°F, 45 rnin at 1800°F, 30 rnin at 2000°F, and 20 rnin at 2000°F followed immediately by 30 rnin at 1550°F. The 1550" and 2000°F treatments were carried out in duplicate for each of the four steels. In order to prevent surface oxidation the bars were austenitized while buried under charcoal in an atmosphere of argon. After quenching the bars in a conventional end-quench fixture, the hardness surveys were made in the usual fashion on parallel flats ground along opposite sides of each bar. These were ground 0.050 in. deep rather than the conventional 0.015 in., to avoid decarburized or deboronized regions.5 The austenite grain sizes which resulted from each heat treatment were observed metallographically using Vilella&apos;s etch for martensite. The criterion used as a measure of hardenability was the distance from the quenched ends of the bars at which a hardness of RC 35 was observed. This hardness represented the inflection point on the hardness vs distance plot. Fig. 1 shows the hardenability of each steel after the several heat treatments. The duplicate tests demonstrated excellent reproducibility; the distance to Rc 35 was reproduced within 1/16 in. for duplicate test bars. All four alloys had the same grain-coarsening characteristics. Neither boron nor nitrogen had any observable effect on grain size. The grain sizes resulting from the various austenitizing treatments were ASTM 7 at 1550°F, ASTM 4 at 1800°F, and ASTM 2 at 2000°F. The small amount of boron in the boron steel greatly enhanced hardenability when the samples were austenitized at 1550°F. The low hardenability of the boron plus nitrogen steel showed that nitrogen eliminated the boron contribution to hardenability. Both steels containing nitrogen, with and without boron, exhibited lower hardenability than the base composition when quenched from 1550°F.

ELECTRICAL methods of geophysical exploration attracted major attention at the three sessions devoted to geophysics on Monday and Tuesday. At the opening&apos; meeting Monday morning Hans Lundberg gave the paper by himself and Folke Kihlstedt; he described the use of the Racom, discussed last year, and the method whereby it is possible to eliminate all but subsurface, effects in electrical exploration. In the discussion Theodor Zuschlag pointed out some of the theoretical considerations behind the field procedure. Karl Sundberg&apos;s paper on the effect of impregnating waters was presented by title only, and S. F. Kelly then gave an abstract of a paper on the electrical properties of ores, by J. J. Jakosky, R. N. Anderson and Clyde H. Wilson. , This dealt with an exhaustive series of laboratory tests on the variation of -conductivity of ore specimens with the frequency of the energizing current, and of the effect of moisture content in typical clays and gouges on their conductivities at various frequencies. Considerable discussion was provoked during which the authors came in for some-criticism on their measuring circuits and for their assumption that a solid conductor could be compared with linear ones. They were praised, however, for making a start toward a compilation of resistivities for ores and rocks. Dr. Slichter disagreed with them that the conductivity of an orebody was primarily capacitive. He also called attention to the fact that it was high time geophysicists adopted the standard physical expression of ohm-,centimeters or ohm-meters to express resistivities. This same point was the burden of the next paper,. "Uniform Expression for Resistivity," by Sherwin F. Kelly, presented by title only.
