Economic deposits of barite occur in Missouri in two main districts. The most important, the Southeastern or Washington County district, is in the southeastern part of the state, mostly in Washington County with a small extension into the northeastern part of St. Francois County. Roughly, it embraces nine townships or about 200,000 acres and accounts for from 80 to 90 per cent. of the state production. The Central district, is in the central part of the state, includes most of Morgan and Miller counties, and parts of Camden; Benton, Moniteau and Cole counties. The area embraced is much larger than the Washington County district, but the deposits are more infrequent. The location and general area covered by the two districts is shown in Fig. 1. There is another small area in southern Franklin County but so far its production has been of small consequence. It might be considered as a northward extension of the Washington County field. An, area in the central part of Hickory County has also produced a small amount. The outline of the districts as shown indicates the general area in which deposits have been found. The total area covered by deposits of barite is only a small part of this, as, in the Central district especially, there may be miles of supposedly barren areas between ore-bearing areas of an acre or two in extent. The date when barite was first mined in Missouri cannot be definit stated, but the industry probably dates back to about 1860. The occurrence of barite was known long before this, as it was encountered in the lead mines in Washington County and mentioned by several earlier writers." Missouri is reported as producing 8000 tons in 1882 so it is evident the industry was well under way in the seventies in order to have arrived at this substantial production. By 1893 Missouri production had increased so that it ranked with that of Virginia, then the largest producer it increased until in 1914 Missouri accounted for about 65 per cent. of the total United States output.

A mutispectral scanner (MSS) obtains remotely sensed data of the earth's surface in vector form, one vector element for each spectral sensing band of the MSS. Data generated by either airborne or orbiting MSS systems are organized in a lattice of scan lines and elements within scan lines. Each element, called a pixel, is represented by an observational vector and corresponds to a relatively small specific area on the ground. The total observations for a sensed scene frequently are in the millions and are composed of a number of populations, each representing a different land form category. Based on samples from the populations, the mean vectors, or spectral signatures, and the covariance matrices for the categories may be estimated. From these, an among category covariance matrix and a combined within category covariance matrix can be found. The total among category variance is the trace of the among category covariance matrix. Canonical analysis finds a linear transformation matrix such that the first transform variable accounts for the maximum possible part of the total among category variance. Similarly, the second transform variable, orthogonal to the first, accounts for the maximum possible part of the remainder of the total variance, and so on. Such transformation often results in over 95 percent of the total variance accounted for in the first three canonical variables, even though the initial number of spectral bands exceeded twenty. Transformation of bulk data into three canonical variates allows color map products to be developed by assigning each variable to a different basic color. Such color products are believed to be more useful for photo-interpretation than color products resulting from any combinations of three of the initial spectral bands.

The extent to which hot metal from the blast furnace affects open-hearth practice and the quality of steel produced has been discussed widely. Open-hearth operators have attributed difficulties experienced in making satisfactory steel to characteristics of the pig iron not disclosed by ordinary analysis. The commonest criticism of the iron has been that it is "physically cold" or "dirty." Often when the blast furnaces are working irregularly the quality of the iron is questioned. A cold hearth, slipping and hanging, the use in the past of unsintered flue dust, and the use of ores difficult to smelt have been associated with the production of iron of poor quality. The difficulty of the situation is that we have no proven yardstick for quality aside from ordinary analysis. Uniformity in analysis is recognized as being important, but the difficulty of changing the open-hearth practice when the iron analysis varies widely may not always be fully appreciated. Although the problem of correlating the characteristics of steel with those of pig iron is admittedly obscure, the effort of producers of quality steel to investigate all factors that may have a bearing on the final product is justified. This report contains data on the oxides in several hundred casts of basic iron produced in a furnace during the course of normal operation on Lake ores. Incidental to the study of the oxides in the iron, it was desirable to follow closely the temperature of the iron. The effect of temperature of the iron upon the silicon and sulphur present is discussed. A general relation between the basicity of the slag and the sulphur in the metal was developed. The amount and composition of oxides in the hot metal and in the steel bath during various intervals between melt-down and tap are discussed. Heats of rimmed steel, killed steel, and semikilled steel were investigated. IN order to understand more fully the complexities of the reactions occurring between the liquid steel and the slag in the basic open-hearth steelmaking furnace, investigations in this country and abroad have turned to laboratory equilibrium studies. This paper is one of a series of reports on investigations being conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The experimental work was completed early in 1942. The slag systems found in the basic open hearth are very complex, being made up of at least eight major components and as many others whose effect might be classified as minor. The first two papers of the series, by Fetters and Chipman,l,2 as well as the paper by Taylor and Chipman,3 dealt with the simplest possible slag system that would resemble those found in the basic open hearth-the slag system consisting of CaO-MgO-SiO2-FeO. (Taylor's rotating induction furnace eliminated the necessity of contamination of the slag by MgO.) Having arrived at some reasonable conclusions regarding the physical chemistry of the reactions between molten iron and the simple slags at equilibrium, the next step was to investigate more complex slag systems. The major purpose of the present investigation was to determine what factors control the distribution of phosphorus between molten iron and the more complex basic slags at equilibrium, and to what extent these factors are influential. The slags used contained CaO, MgO, Si02, FeO, Fe203, P205, MnO, A1203 and CaF2, but not all of the slag samples contained all of these components at one time. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Although a number of interesting papers have been published on the subject of dephosphorization of an iron bath, there are as yet no results from laboratory studies that give thoroughly reliable information on the dephosphorization reaction. Even for the supposedly simple Fe-O-P system involving iron-phosphorus melts and iron oxide-iron phosphate slags, the experimental results are contradictory and no formulas have been established that adequately fit the equilibrium conditions. The Fe-O-P system has been studied by Schackmann and Brings4' von Samson-Himmelstjerna,5 Oelsen and Maetz,6 Bischof and Maurer,7 Diepschlag and Schürmann,8 and Herty,9 and the results of their investigations appear in Table I. HAYWARD.-I do not want it understood that I think that the conclusion that the time of tempering temperature is immaterial has been definitely proven, but since these are the first definite figures put out, I thought before continuing on more work ourselves, it would be well to present them as progress and for information. J. A. MATHEWS, Syracuse, N. Y.-I think that if Prof. Hayward would consult the paper of Profs. Barus and Strouhal,1 1885, he would find about 250 pages, mostly figures, on this subject, in which they investigated the tempering effect by electrical and magnetic methods. There are so many figures in the paper that it is very difficult reading. One point particularly brought out was that even at a low temperature, such as the boiling point of alcohol, about 60° C., there is a tempering effect, increasing up to 4 hr. One reason they obtained those results, with which the present authors are at variance, was that they started with a high-carbon steel which hardens thoroughly, whereas the steel Prof. Hayward and his collaborator used was a comparatively mild steel which does not take a great deal of hardening. About 3 years ago Mr. Stagg and I published 2 a few figures bearing on the same subject, but we used .a low-carbon alloy steel of high tempering qualities and found a great deal of improvement, particularly in ductility, by continuing the drawing up to 4 hr. We used a chrome-vanadium steel showing after heat treatment 250,000 tensile strength. On short drawing, we got almost no ductility, but by continuing to 4 hr., we raised it to 12 per cent. I believe Prof. Hayward's results are due to using comparatively mild steel, whereas Prof. Barus used drill rod and carried out a, wonderfully exhaustive

Samples of copper-lead concentrates from the mine of Cia Minerals Santander, Inc., a Peruvian subsidiary of the St. Joseph Lead Co. were recently subjected to special analysis. This concentrate was known to contain bismuth which, under some circumstances, might have incurred a smelter penalty. In this case, customers for the concentrate accepted it and requested a higher concentration of bismuth. Although chemical analysis would disclose the presence of the metal, it was not possible with equipment available at the mill in Peru to determine the mode of occurrence in the fine grained ores.

A high seam geologic condition exists at Jim Walter Resources No. 4 mine that requires immediate rib support after a continuous miner cuts a place. High seam mining heights are typically 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 9 ft) and a thick rock layer is present in the upper portion of the coal rib side. The 610-m (2000 ft) mining depth at No. 4 mine induces horizontal rib line movement after excavating an entry. Horizontal rib movement greater than 305 mm (12 in.) have been noted. When lateral movement occurs in the high seam areas, the thick rock layer, and the coal above the rock layer, become fractured and tend to roll into the entry. If not adequately supported, large rib rolls develop in the place being bolted as well as in previously mined areas that endanger men and equipment. To control this, rib support must be installed in the roof bolting operation as the bolting crew works toward the face. A rib control system has been developed for this high seam mining condition using a mechanical anchor bolt placed at an angle in the rib and installed with a modified Fletcher DDM-15 bolting machine. More than 120 km (75 miles) of entry have been supported with angle rib bolts. These angle bolts constitute 43% to 60% of the total roof and rib bolt footage in the high seam portions of No. 4 mine. The angle rib bolting system has proven safer, more effective, and more efficient than the earlier support method using bolts installed horizontally into the rib. No rib roll accidents have occurred since the angle drill bolting machines were placed in service in 1981. By securing the broken rib material with an angle bolt anchored above the coal pillar, a more effective means of rib control is achieved. Angle rib bolting does not interfere with continuous miner productivity. In addition, bolting crews are now reduced from three to two people. Total drilling supply costs are about 60% the previous cost, when compared to the previous support method using horizontal rib bolts:

Fluorspar is the commercial name for fluorite, which is the mineral having the composition CaF2, calcium fluoride. Its valuable properties are due to its content of fluorine, and it is the only important commercial source of that element. The name is derived from the Latin fluere, to flow, because the mineral melts easily and is a good flux. History The mineral has been known since Greek and Roman times, when it was used for drinking cups and ornamental slabs. Various peoples including the Chinese and the American Indians have carved ornaments from large crystals. Its usefulness as a flux was known to Agricola, who wrote about it in 1546.1 Mining began in England about 1775 15 and at various places in the United States during the period 1820 to 1840.28 Substantial production was achieved first in the period 1888 to 1900 in consequence of the development and widespread adoption of the basic open hearth method of making steel, in which fluorspar is used as a flux. After that, production and usage was stimulated by growth in the steel, aluminum, chemical, and ceramic industries and accelerated by World Wars I and II. The organic fluorides called "Freons" entered the picture in 1931, and the use of anhydrous HF as a catalyst in the manufacture of alkylate for high octane fuel blends began in 1942. The development of the froth flotation process in the late 1920's, a differential flotation scheme for separating fluorspar from galena, sphalerite, and other minerals in the 1930's, and the application of heavy-media concentrating methods to the treatment of low-grade ores in the 1940's were outstanding technological contributions that enabled increased production of fluorspar concentrates. Composition and Properties Fluorite in its purest form contains 51.1 pct calcium and 48.9 pct fluorine. Substitution of small percentages of cerium and yttrium for calcium have been noted.4 Mechanical inclusions of gases and fluids such as petroleum and water, and of other solid minerals such as pyrite, marcasite, and chalcopyrite are common. The fluorspar of commerce contains attached and admixed mineral impurities, chiefly calcite, quartz, barite, celestite, and various sulfides. It is interesting that the purest commercial form in which the mineral is sold, acid grade concentrate, contains a minimum of 97 pct CaF2, and as such is of comparable purity to many reagents used in chemical laboratories. Fluorite has a marked tendency to occur in large, well-formed crystals sometimes six to ten inches on a side. It crystallizes in the isometric system, frequently forming cubic and octahedral crystals or combinations thereof. The mineral also occurs in massive and in earthy forms, and in crusts or globular aggregates with radial fibrous texture. Crystalline fluorspar exhibits a great array of colors, from colorless and water clear to yellow, blue, purple, green, rose, red, bluish and purplish black, and brown. The colors are often arranged in alternating bands parallel to cube faces. They may be altered by exposure to X-rays, heat, ultraviolet light, and pressure, and are caused by a variety of factors including the presence of trace impurities and displaced ions in the lattice. Sometimes the changes induced by X-rays can be reversed by ultraviolet radiation. The mineral has a hardness of 4, and is the model of that hardness on the Mobs scale.

Members of the Society, it is a very great honor for me to be here today and to have the opportunity of telling you about some things that have been accumulating in the back of my mind for some time. Before attempting to do so, I should acknowledge my debt to the many people who are responsible for my presence here this afternoon. To do this properly, however, would consume much of my allotted time and I will therefore mention only two men, both of whom were directly involved in the discovery of the Henderson ore body. The first of these was Robert Henderson, now dead, who at the time the work was going on was vice president of Western Operations of the Climax Molybdenum Co. Truly, he provided the environment that permitted the exploration program to function effectively, and the deposit appropriately bears his name. The second man I meant to mention was resident geologist at Urad at the time of the Henderson discovery. I think I should explain right here that the Urad ore body and the Henderson ore body, although entirely separate, are closely related deposits, and that both are located at Red Mountain in Clear Creek County, Colo.

MINAS DE MATAHAMBRE, S.A. is a Cuban mining corporation with mines located in the Matahambre district about 100 miles westerly from Havana in the Province of Pinar del Rio. The port of entry is the subport of Santa Lucia on the north coast of Cuba. The mines are located six miles inland at the town of Minas de Matahambre. Minas de Matahambre and Santa Lucia are connected by a 9-mile automobile road, and a 30,000-ft. Leschen aerial tramway. At the subport of Santa Lucia the company maintains docks, concentrate bins, tugs, lighters, and miscellaneous shipping equipment. The power plant of the company is also located at Santa Lucia. Connection between the power plant and the mine is effected by a 30,000-ft. transmission line. In the town of Minas de Matahambre are located the mines, concentrator, shops, and warehouses. The con-centrates are transported to Santa Lucia by the Leschen aerial tramway. The mines are equipped with three shafts, viz., Nos. 1, 2, and 3. (Fig. 1.) No. 1 Shaft is a three-compartment vertical tim-bered shaft and has reached a depth of 1825 ft. This is the present main hoisting shaft. No. 2 Shaft is a four-compartment vertical shaft lined with steel sets and native hardwood lagging. Certain portions where the ground is heavy have been lined with re-inforced concrete. Practically all production will be hoisted eventually through this shaft. No. 3 Shaft is a three-compartment vertical timbered shaft. It has reached a depth of 1090 ft. Its purpose is for prospecting, ventilation, and handling men and sup-plies through the north section of the mine.

In a recent paper, Held1 showed that rolling conditions can have a marked effect on the volume fraction of surface texture produced in low-carbon steel. This variation in rolling texture is reflected in the recrys-tallization texture and affects the plastic properties of the annealed sheet. The fact that roll friction can influence the surface deformation texture in iron and steel has been known for some time;'= but the magnitude of the effect has never been shown quite so clearly before. The analogous effect during wire drawing has been recognized for many year.4 Dillamore and Roberts5 examined surface textures in warm- and cold-rolled aluminum and copper. They found that when a surface texture was present it could be described as the interior texture rotated about the transverse sheet direction. The angle of rotation was a function of the type of lubrication, the amount of reduction per pass, and the temperature of rolling. The purpose of the present note is to show that surface textures in cold-rolled iron can also be described as interior textures rotated about the transverse sheet direction. Vacuum-melted electrolytic iron* was straight- rolled 90 pct at room temperature in a two-high rolling mill with 5-in.-diam rolls. Two rolling procedures were used: a) no lubrication with reductions of about 0.035 in. per pass, and b) heavy lubrication with lano-line and reductions of about 0.002 in. per pass. The final sheet thickness was 0.030 in. (110) pole figures were determined by transmission through specimens taken from the sheet surface and sheet midplane. The surface texture of the sheet cold-rolled according to procedure a is shown in Fig. l.* The shapes of the low-intensity contour lines indicate that the texture can be described as a partial fiber texture with a (110) fiber axis normal to the sheet. The approximate range of orientstions present is (011)[211] — (0ll)[100] — (011)[211]. This range of orientations is what one would obtain by rotating the interior texture 90 deg about the transverse sheet direction. The intensity of (110) and (222) reflections from planes parallel to the surface was measured after removing metal from the surface by chemical polishing. RECENTLY a prominent Brazilian' doctor wrote to an American friend: "I feel that cultural relations between the American and Brazilian people could be promoted in a very speedy and effective way by establishing contacts between men of the same professions. . . . A Brazilian mechanical engineer could be immediately interested in relations with American colleagues, even if he had never heard of Longfellow and was not interested in Stokowski's orchestra. . . . A large number of cultural ties could be established between specific groups of men who have already some common interest, and who, whenever they meet, can do something that naturally brings them closer, that is, `talk shop."' In appointing a committee on Inter-American Engineering Relations to cooperate with the Department of State in its program of fostering cultural relations with the other republics of this hemisphere, the American Engineering Council has taken a step which should lead to a greater sense of unity and fraternity among engineers of the Americas. That such unity and fraternity are part and parcel of the moral defense of the hemisphere is obvious. For years engineers of the United States have been traveling South and South-east to construct roads and bridges, dam rivers, harness waterfalls, build ports, install and operate mining equipment, and erect buildings and plants, often at the risk of life. Those in the teaching profession in this country have had as pupils a growing number of students from our neighboring republics whom they have sent back home trained in the most efficient engineering methods. In a sense, however, these relations with the other nations on this side of the globe have been haphazard and left to chance. Personal acquaintance among engineers has played its role but no organized attempt appears to have been made to take advantage of the natural relationship which geographical and historical factors should encourage.

IT has always been understood, in northern West Virginia where both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams are mined, that pillaring or splitting in the lower Pittsburgh seam could break the interval strata and make mining in the overlying Sewickley difficult or impossible. In some instances, however, mining methods practiced in the overlying Sewickley have reversed the problem, resulting in a shifting of the intermediate layer and destroying valuable acreages of the Pittsburgh seam below. The Pittsburgh seam in this area is, on the average, 102 in. thick. About 18 in. of low-quality head coal are left for roof protection as it is mined. Immediately over the coal are two draw slates, two rider 'seams, and a good hard black shale, locally called black rock, which serves as a permanent roof where draw slates and riders are taken down on certain main haulroads. In most areas mined in this seam in the past the bottom has been satisfactory but soft. However, in areas now being mined by the Christopher Coal Co. in Monongalia County the bottom is very hard and unyielding. The Sewickley seam, lying 85 ft above the Pittsburgh, will average nearly 70 in. in thickness and is overlain by massive shales and sandstones. Much of the seam is mined only down to the "sheep skin," a hard band about 4 in. above the bottom, which is composed of relatively hard shale. Fig. 1 shows a typical cross-section through the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams in the area being discussed. The thin Redstone seam is not deep-mined but is stripped in some locations where it outcrops. Most of the Sewickley seam in the Morgantown areas has been mined out from 10 to 30 years. There are at present only two large mines and five or six others of small production operating in that seam. Mining systems in the past were generally of the room and pillar type with some full pillar extraction. This seam in the Scott's Run area was operated by as many as thirty or forty different companies at one time, during an era beset with strikes, market failures, and depressions. Most of the barrier pillars along the many main haulroads were abandoned, and blocks of Sewickley coal that would be fully recovered with today's machinery were left unmined when conditions became anything less than favorable. Consequently the mined-out Sewickley is spotted throughout with solid blocks varying in size from 100x100 ft to 200x400 ft and larger. It is these unmined Sewickley blocks surrounded by worked-out portions that have caused transmissions of roof stresses to underlying Pittsburgh mining areas, see Fig. 2, resulting in untold difficulty. As the Christopher Coal Co. operates both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams, accurate maps of workings in both seams are readily available and are regularly consulted. The first Pittsburgh squeeze attributed to overlying Sewickley blocks occurred in the Arkwright mine, where a shuttle car crew was developing a section consisting of seven panel headings. These entries were being driven in solid coal 3400 ft from the nearest worked-out Pittsburgh area. As mining advanced it was noticed that certain ribs began to slough and certain areas to show signs

This paper describes briefly the topography and geology of the region where the mica-bearing pegmatites are found and discusses prospecting, the quality of the mica, its preparation, and evaluation of the deposits. Muscovite mica occurs in a number of widely separated localities in Brazil, but production has come largely from deposits in the southeastern and eastern part of the State of Minas Gerais (Fig. I). There the deposits form a discontinuous zone, which starts at a point go km. north of the city of Rio de Janeiro and extends north for some 500 km., roughly parallel to the coast. A maximum width of 180 km. is reached along the Rio Doce. To the west in Minas Gerais, and extending east into the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, the mica zone proper is fringed by areas in which there are scattered occurrences of mica-bearing pegmatites. A few of these outlying deposits have produced commercial mica, but most of them are unimportant. To the southwest, in the State of Sao Paulo, there are a number of mines, which at one time produced a very considerable amount of sheet mica, largely as a byproduct of kaolin mining. These deposits, and a few others lying between them and the main productive areas to the northeast, appear to be the southwestern continuation of the strong Minas Gerais mica zone. In the vicinity of Conquista, just north of the Minas Gerais boundary in the State of Bahia, and still farther north, near Jacobina, there are several known mica deposits. Their location indicates that they may be the northern continuation of the main mica zone. The major part of Brazilian mica production has come from four areas within the mica zone proper; from north to south, Governador Valadares, Raul Soares, Espera Feliz, and Muriaé.. The first is go km. from north to south and reaches a maximum width of 180 km. The Raul Soares area extends 135 km. from northeast to southwest, and in places is 80 km. wide. The Espera Feliz area is 100 km. from north to south, and reaches a width of 35 km. The Muriai. area extends 150 km. from northeast to southwest and its width reaches 40 kilometers. Between the known productive areas, and in the areas directly to the southwest and to the north of them, little mica has been produced. These gaps, as well as certain irregularities in the outline of the mica zone itself, are to be ascribed either to lack of prospecting or to conditions preventing the discovery of mica, rather than to its nonexistence. Elsewhere in Brazil mica has been reported from eastern Goiaz, Ceará, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Matto Grosso, and Amazonas. Production from these sources is negligible at present. Because of the inferior quality of the mica from the more accessible of these localities, and the operational difficulties occasioned by the remoteness of others, it is improbable that they will become important producers for some time to come.

The Espera Feliz area is 100 km. from north to south, and reaches a width of 35 km. The Muriai. area extends 150 km. from northeast to southwest and its width reaches 40 kilometers. Between the known productive areas, and in the areas directly to the southwest and to the north of them, little mica has been produced. These gaps, as well as certain irregularities in the outline of the mica zone itself, are to be ascribed either to lack of prospecting or to conditions preventing the discovery of mica, rather than to its nonexistence. Elsewhere in Brazil mica has been reported from eastern Goiaz, Ceará, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Matto Grosso, and Amazonas. Production from these sources is negligible at present. Because of the inferior quality of the mica from the more accessible of these localities, and the operational difficulties occasioned by the remoteness of others, it is improbable that they will become important producers for some time to come.

In connection with the recent visit of the Special Mission of British Ministry of Munitions to the United States, the United Engineering Societies gave a dinner to the members of the. Mission on Tuesday evening, Nov. 13. This was the only public function on behalf of the visiting commissioners while they were in New York. During the remainder of their visit they were in daily conference with bankers, merchants' associations, labor federations, and other organizations. The result of these conferences will doubtless have an important influence on the manufacture of war supplies in the United States, since it will enable our business men and manufacturers to avoid a good many of the mistakes that unfortunately occurred in England at the beginning of the war. At present, fully 90 per cent. of the employees of British munition factories are omen, and the problem of employing women in the industries of the United States will doubtless soon be encountered with increasing frequency.

ACCELERATED programs, as discussed in this paper, refer to the year-around operation of a college or university with three sixteen-week or four twelve-week terms per year, with pauses between sufficient only to allow the administrative group to perform their functions. In most engineering schools, under such conditions, the conventional four-year course can be condensed to two years and eight months. These accelerated programs of study, which now exist in most of our technical institutions, were forced upon us under the influence of the outburst of wartime patriotism, perhaps one might go so far as to call it hysteria. Many of us felt and hoped that these programs were temporary expedients, but the cold hard threat of permanency now rears its head; consequently we should examine the merits and shortcomings of the new order, and evaluate its effect on our educational system, since it may persist in some form in the postwar years, because of the changing political and financial situation. During 1916 and 1917, the E. J. Longyear Co. of Minneapolis, Minn., carried out a campaign of exploration for nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury District of Ontario. The work was initiated by W. E. Smith, a resident of Sudbury, who called the attention of W. J. Mead, Chief geologist. The E. J. Longyear Co., to the fact that explorable lands in the Sudbury District were still available. Five diamond drills were employed, and holes were drilled in the townships of Levack, Trill, Denison, Blezard; Garson, Falconbridge and MacLennan. The general map of the District, Fig. 1, shows the distribution of the lands chosen. As a result of this exploration, a large body of nickel and copper ore has been found in the western part of the Township of Falconbridge. This property lies in the eastern part of the Sudbury District, east of the Garson mine.

ANTHRACITE ALTHOUGH the unmined anthracite will last for approximately 150 years, most of the thicker and cleaner coal beds have been almost entirely first-mined and pretty well robbed, leaving much of the present and future production to come from thin and dirtier beds. Herewith is a section of one of the dirty beds being mined in the Wyoming region [ ] This section shows that 45.8 per cent of the bed is made up of impurities and that the 45 in. of coal in the bed is in five benches, the thickest of which is 19 inches. In some localities of the anthracite region there are 14 beds of minable coal. Orderly and proper mining of the coal makes it necessary to rob or second-mine-almost all beds have already been first-mined-in sequence from the top downward. Therefore the robbing of the few remaining portions of the thicker and cleaner beds is in many instances being held up by the mining of the overlying thin and dirtier coal beds. Impurities Impurities consist of fire clay, slate, rock, and bone. The latter, which is black, contains 40 to 60 per cent carbon and often resembles good coal. In some beds there are also bands of "blue" coal, which, as the name implies, is of a bluish slaty color. Although much of this "blue" coal has a carbon content almost as high as the good anthracite, it is not
