THE increase in the production of iron has been accompanied by a growing demand for an improved quality, and more especially at the present time, in the manufacture of Bessemer steel, which is rapidly becoming an important branch of industry. This has led the makers of pig iron to a careful investigation of the composition of the materials from which their metal is produced, the inquiry being greatly assisted by a cordial alliance of science and practice. Formerly, chemical science was held in abeyance, or admitted in a hesitating experimental way ; but now it is received as a valuable auxiliary, and its decisions are accepted as final and conclusive. It is called on to assist the iron-maker in determining the quality of his stock, and to detect the presence of injurious elements in his fuel, ores, flux, or iron. The object of this paper is to submit the method now in use at the furnaces of the Kemble Coal and Iron Company in the Broad Top coal and iron region, for removing, by a process of crushing and washing, slate and other impurities from coal, designed, when coked, for furnace fuel. It is not contemplated to claim very advanced progress in this work, believing that it is susceptible of improvement, but to show that some progress has been made in a comparatively new field, and it is hoped in the right direction, since coke is probably destined to become the principal fuel in the metallurgy of iron. The Broad Top coal region occupies an isolated geographical position, standing 25 miles east from the Alleghany field. It is associated with the latter by the structure of its coal, and more closely with the Cumberland field by a similarity in the quality of coal.

The history of this refinery has been one of expansion. It now has the capacity to produce 240,000 tons of cathodes annually. A general flowsheet and descriptions of the plant layout, operations involved, and equipment used at one of the world's largest and most modern electrolytic copper refineries are presented. THE El Paso copper refinery of Phelps Dodge Refining Corp. was originally constructed by the Nichols Copper Co., in association with Phelps Dodge Corp. and the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., in order to refine anode copper produced at the smelters of the two latter companies. Initial production was obtained from the plant in January 1930 and its annual refining capacity was 100,000 tons of anodes. In order to keep pace with Phelps Dodge Corp.'s increasing copper production in the Southwest, it became necessary in 1937 to increase the El Paso plant's refining capacity to 160,000 tons of cathodes annually. This was accomplished by adding two sections to the electrolytic tank house, increasing the number of anodes placed in each commercial electrolytic tank from 33 to 37, and making changes in the dc circuits which made it possible to put three generators on each of the two circuits instead of two, thus increasing the amperage on each circuit from 10,000 to 14,800 amp. The capacity of the two furnaces from which refined shapes were cast was increased by raising the sidedoor bays on the furnaces 6 in. An increase of 70 pct in the productive capacity of Phelps Dodge Corp.s Morenci Branch in 1942 again made it necessary to expand refining capacity. In order to accomplish this, Defense Plant Corp. set up a project to increase the capacity of the El Paso plant to 240,000 tons of cathodes annually. This project consisted of enlarging the tank house approximately 50 pct, the construction of another wire- bar furnace, and corresponding increases in other departments where necessary. The engineering work on this expansion was begun in March 1942. Actual construction was under way by August 1942, and the work was completed by March 1944. These additional facilities were purchased from Defense Plant Corp. by Phelps Dodge Refining Corp. in August 1949. The plant is in El Paso about eight miies east of the center of the city and near Highway 80 and the main lines of the Southern Pacific and Texas & New Orleans railroads. The plant site covers approximately 494 acres of company-owned land that is ideally adapted for its use, being well-drained sandy soil and having enough slope so that a minimum amount of excavation was required when the plant was constructed. There is still ample room on the plant site for any future plant expansion. The plant is constructed on four different ground levels and so arranged that the unrefined copper is unloaded on the highest level at the north side of the plant and the refined copper is shipped out from the lowest level on the south side of the plant. The receiving or unloading platform, weighing and sampling rooms, main floor of the tank house, acid and condensate storage tanks, and the slimes and copper sulphate plants are on the first or highest level. The tank house basement, yard scales, charging and furnace bays, balloon flue and stack, brick-storage building, substation and power house, boiler feedwater treating plant and pump house, water storage tanks, and change houses are on the second level. This second level also contains ample yard area for setting-up furnace charges, and for storage of custom scrap, cathodes, scrap anodes, blister, coke, and poles. Microscopic observations during creep tests were made on AI-20 pet Zn, 80 pet Ni-20 pet Cr, and 25 and 3S aluminum specimens. All these materials failed in an inter-crystalline manner under certain stress and temperature conditions. Particular atten-tion was given to the initiation and propagation of intercrystalline cracks in coarsegrained AI-20 pct Zn specimens. The geometry of the grains and grain boundaries in these specimens was known before the tests. On the basis of the observations and a knowledge of the interaction between grains and grain boundaries, a mechanism of intercrystalline fracture and propagation of the fracture has been proposed. METAL, and alloy fracture occurs essentially in two ways: transcrystalline and intemrystalline. In the past most of the work done in this field was centered on the determination of stress criteria for fracture. The specimens used for these studies were tested under varying conditions of stress state, temperature, and strain rate. Unfortunately, very little attention was given to the initiation and propagation of the fracture, whereas the nature of fracture was examined closely only after failure. Several extensive reviews of these studies have been published by Orowan, Smith, Barrett, and Petch.1, 4 It is well known that a material which exhibits a ductile and transcrystalline fracture can be made to exhibit a brittle and intercrystalline fracture by modifying its composition and by heat treatment. This modification may or may not result in microscopically observable precipitation in the grain boundaries." In the creep of any one alloy the transition of transcrystalline to intercrystalline fracture is a function of stress, strain rate, and temperature." The tendency for intercrystalline fracture to occur increases as the strain rate decreases and the testing temperature increases. Extensive work on high purity aluminum (99.995 pet) under creep conditions showed the importance of the interaction between grains and grain boundaries, and the different responses of grain and grain boundaries to the variables: stress, strain rate, and temperature.7, 8 It was also shown that grain boundary deformation necessarily has to be accommodated in the grains by various deformation means as. for example, fold formation. The type of fracture resulting from the creep of high purity aluminum was invariably found to be transcrystalline. On the other hand, 2S and 3s aluminum were, under certain conditions, found to fracture in an intercrystalline manner." One reason given for this was that the grains could accommodate to a lesser extent the deformation of the grain boundaries.19 It was decided to examine this line of reasoning in greater detail and to investigate the particular interactions between grains and grain boundaries that result in the incidence and progression of inter-ct,ystalline fracture. It is also the purpose of this paper to show where and how intercrystalline cracks start and how they propagate to result in fracture. Several alloys—Al-20 pct Zn, 80 pet Ni-20 pet Cr, 2S and 3s aluminum-— were used for this study, but attention was paid mainly to the behavior of an A1-20 pet Zn alloy, since its general creep behavior has been established." From the results of this study a mechanism of intercrystalline fracture is proposed. Experimental Procedure The experimental procedure was similar to that used in previous work and has been detailed elsewhere.' Two parallel flat surfaces were milled from an originally round specimen, giving a gage portion which was 1x0.09X0.17 in. Some round specimens, 1/4 in. round by 1 in., were also tested. The A1-20 pet Zn specimens. which were annealed at 1030°F for 24 hr, showed two to four grains across the width of the test bar, and most of the grains occupied the whole thickness of the specimenu. INTRODUCTION Slurry systems and mechanical conveying, represent the main methods of transporting solids from one area of a mineral processing plant to another. A well-designed slurry handling system can assist in lowering plant capital costs by reducing building size, simplifying plant layout and reducing operating costs by lowering maintenance and labour costs. This Paper has been prepared with the object of providing a practical approach to designing slurry systems. SLURRY CHARACTERISTICS Slurry is a mixture of crushed or ground rock mixed with water or a chemical solution, and can flow under several different conditions: (a) As a homogeneous suspension; (b) As a heterogeneous suspension; (c) With a moving bed (saltation); (d) With a stationary bed. Homogeneous flow takes place when the solids are uniformly distributed throughout a pipe and when particle sizes are smaller than 325 mesh. Heterogeneous is the most common slurry suspension. In this system, there is a gradual increase in concentration of solid particles towards the bottom of a pipe. There is a fairly wide range of velocities that fall within this system. In moving bed systems, the coarse particles settle out and bounce along the bottom of a pipe. Operating under these conditions tends to minimize wear and power requirements, but because this system operates within narrow velocity limits, pipelines frequently plug. Stationary bed conditions exist when coarse material has settled in the bottom of the pipe restricting the available area. These conditions should be avoided. DESIGNING A SLURRY SYSTEM Slurry can be transported either by pumping through a pipeline or by developing a gravity head and flowing through a pipe or along a launder. When considering any slurry system, whether for the design of a new plant or to make modifications to an existing operating plant, design criteria are required. The design criteria provide the information for calculating the material balance and sizing the equipment. The quantities on the material balance can then be assigned to the flowsheet for reference. The little town of San Nicolás, Tamaulipas, Mexico, lies approximately 60 miles east of Linares, situated in the State of Nuevo Leon, and 150 miles SE. of Monterey, as shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1. The place is reached from Monterey by the Tampico train as far as Linares, a distance of 92 miles, and then by coach the rest of the way. It is situated in a narrow valley between low hills, the houses forming one main street and a plaza. It is peopled by about 500 inhabitants. The climate is temperate, the thermometer ranging from 90" in summer to a few degrees below freezing-point in winter; but this severe weather only lasts a day or two at a time, when the " northers " blow. There are no streams in the vicinity, but water sufficient for the use of the people is obtained from wells. The rainfall is about the same as that in the rest of NE. Mexico. The rainy months are July, August, and September. The rest of the year is practically dry, with an occasional showery day or two during the winter, when a " norther " is blowing. Timber is abundant in many localities. There are two varieties of oak, besides mesquite, ebony, "maguira," "patol," and a number of other kinds of trees indigenous to this region. I. History. On the discovery of the silver-lead bearing veins occurring in this district, the mining-camp of San Nicolás was founded in 1767 by the Spaniards, and numerous mines were opened and worked for a distance of about 3 miles east and 5 miles west of the town. For the purposes of this paper, the boundaries of China and Siberia will be taken as they stood about 1907. Except in the Caspian region, it is doubtful if all the oil ever produced in these countries would equal one day's flow of a good Texas well. Considering the vastness of the regions and the variety of strata, it seems strange that these two countries should have made so small a showing in the petroleum industry. No doubt the condition is caused partly by lack of prospecting and of modern methods of development; in larger measure, however, it is evidently because of unfavorable geological conditions over nearly all of east-central and northern Asia. China The known oil occurrences in China are very few. For many years, perhaps a barrel a day has been obtained by primitive methods from wells near the city of Yenchang in the northwestern province of Shensi. A like amount was obtained from wells bored for salt water in the vicinity of Kiating in southwestern Szechwan. The little oil was separated from salt water by allowing it to stand in jars. The salt wells yield also considerable natural gas, which is used to evaporate the salt and also for domestic purposes. There is evidence that wells were bored in this part of China before the third century. It is said that more than 1200 wells have been sunk in that district to depths of 1600 to 2000 ft. (485 to 610 m.) in connection with the salt industry. The scarcity of petroleum in China may be ascribed to three general geologic conditions: First, China contains practically no marine sediments of Mesozoic or Cenozoic age; second, the Paleozoic sediments are not for the most part of the types that generally contribute petroleum; third, the rocks of nearly all ages have been strongly folded, faulted, and more or less intruded by igneous rocks in all parts of China except certain areas in the west and northwest. The occurrence of minerals of nickel and cobalt at Mine La Motte is probably known to every mineralogist. I will not attempt to describe these minerals, but, before entering on my subject, will briefly mention the ores, etc., which call for metallurgical treatment and enter into the composition of our mattes. Our staple lead-ore, the dressed galena, is the chief source of nickel and cobalt. It carries but a small percentage of these metals, viz.: 0.2 to 0.3 percent. usually, though when much copper pyrites is contained in the gangue, the amount of nickel and cobalt may be as great as 1.0 to 1.5 per cent. Next in importance is the ((middle product" of the dressingworks, consisting of the sulphides of iron (and copper) with gangue and galena. This usually carries 20 to 23 per cent. of lead, 0.5 to 1.0 per cent. of copper and 2.5 to 3.5 per cent. of nickel and cobalt. A larger percentage of copper always carries with it an increase of nickel and cobalt. In some few cases 12 to 15 per cent. of copper gives 6.5 to 8.0 per cent of these metals. The microwave region of the radio spectrum was effectively utilized in radar designs during the recent war and it has become of increasing interest in the field of communications. Work in this field has led to an important use for silicon—that of the point contact rectifiers†1 in the frequency converter of microwave (radar or radio) receivers—and has stimulated considerable interest in the electrical properties and preparation of silicon and its alloys. Silicon is an electronic semiconductor. Its conductivity at room temperature results principally from the presence of certain impurities. While for metals an increase in impurity content increases the resistivity, for semiconductors such as silicon the opposite occurs and, in general, the addition of impurities lowers the resistivity. Silicon materials may be classified into one of two groups depending upon the manner in which the impurities contribute to electrical properties. These have been termed for convenience p-type or n-type. P-type silicon develops a very large positive thermal emf against metals, has a Hall coefficient of positive sign and a low resistance direction in point contact rectification with the silicon positive with respect to the point. N-type silicon, on the other hand, develops a negative thermal emf against metals, has a Hall coefficient of negative sign and a low resistance direction in rectification with the silicon negative with respect to the point. Impurities which produce n-type silicon are called donors inasmuch as these elements contribute to electrical conductivity by donating electrons to an unfilled energy band in the silicon. On the other hand, elements which produce p-type silicon are known as acceptors as these impurities contribute to the electrical conductivity by accepting electrons from a filled energy band permitting what is known as conductivity by "holes" in which the sign of the carriers appears to be positive. A general treatment of the mechanism of conduction in semiconductors from the viewpoint of modern band theory has been given recently by Pearson,2 by Becker, Green and Pearson,3 and by Torrey and Whitmer.4 In this investigation boron and aluminum have been found to be acceptors, and phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony to be donors in silicon. Data on the effect of boron and phosphorus on the electrical properties, when present singly and in combination, have been acquired. These data are discussed in the present paper. Raw Materials Used and Methods for Adding Seeond Constituents Silicon from two sources was used in this work and these will be referred to as A and B respectively. Silicon A is a material of high purity supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. It is prepared by chemical purification of "commercial" silicon obtained from the arc furnace reduction of SiO2. It contains 99.8 pct silicon, minimum, with small amounts of calcium, iron, aluminum, boron, and phosphorus as the principal impurities. This material was extensively employed in these studies as well as in the commercial preparation of rectifier materials. Silicon B is a material of high purity from the du-Pont Co. It is prepared by a pyrolytic reduction of Sicl4 and is free of analytically detectable amounts of boron and phosphorus. Its use permitted study of the effect of boron and phosphorus individually on the properties. This material contains, however, spec-troscopic traees of a number of metals, some of which affect electrical and rectification properties. Typical analyses for the two grades of silicon are given in Table 1. To make controlled additions of boron to the charge it was necessary to employ a low boron content master alloy since the quantity of boron to be added was usually only a few thousandths of one percent. The alloy containing nominally one percent boron was prepared by melting chemically pure boron with silicon A using the melting techniques for 320 g silicon

The reduction of manganese oxide from a basic slag by silicon dissolved in liquid iron at steelmaking temperatures was studied to determine the rate-controlling step for the process. The experiments were carried out under an argon atmosphere in a resistance-heated vertical-tube furnace. The two liquid phases, slag and metal, were held in zirconia crucibles. Sampling and chemical analysis of the slag phase led to time-concentration curves for the system. Results obtained by varying parameters such as temperature, stirring rate, concentration, and melt geometry defined the limiting reaction mechanism. The reduction of manganese oxide by silicon is a fast reaction and reached equilibrium within 90 min. The rate of stirring has a marked effect on the reaction rate, while, on the other hand, the effect of temperature is very small. This identifies the rate-controlling step as diffusion rather than interfaciul chemical reaction. The variation of other parameters revealed that a) diffusion of manganese in the iron phase is the slow step, b) the value of D/6 for manganese in iron at 1550°C is 7x 10-4 cm per sec, c) the energy of activation for the apparent rate constant is 7 kcal per mole, and d) increasing the amount of silicon in the iron decreases the diffusion coefficient of manganese. THE equilibrium relations pertinent to the reduction of manganese oxide from a steelmaking slag by silicon dissolved in liquid iron have been studied, but little is known about the mechanisms that control the rate of the process. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the rate of reduction by silicon and to determine the rate-limiting step. The effects of stirring rate, temperature, composition, and melt geometry were investigated as a means of identifying the controlling step. On the laboratory scale, relatively little work has been done in the area of slag-metal kinetics, primarily because of the problems confronted in attempting to contain liquid slags and metals in laboratory crucibles at steelmaking temperatures. Since graphite is an ideal material for a crucible, several investigations have been carried out on the reduction of various oxides from a slag by carbon in graphite-saturated iron and on the transfer of sulfur between a slag and graphite-saturated iron. Most of this work has been performed in induction furnaces. Studies where the container was not graphite are extremely limited. A single kinetic study of manganese transfer between molten iron and basic slags was carried out by Sano, Shiomi, and Matsushita.' These investigators prepared calcium oxide and titanium oxide crucibles to contain the two-phase system. Only a few experiments were carried out and the results had to be treated qualitatively. Despite the paucity of kinetic data, a large quantity of information is available in the literature concerning the thermodynamics2-12 and physical properties'3-21 of the slags containing manganese oxide and the dilute liquid iron alloys containing manganese and silicon which were involved in this research program. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A vertical-tube resistance-heated furnace was used in this investigation to study the slag-metal reaction Although most previous slag-metal studies were carried out in induction furnaces, a resistance furnace has several advantages including better control of temperature and stirring rate. Hence, a resistance furnace was selected for this study, and its design is shown schematically in Fig. 1. It is proposed to present some of the results of observation of the geologists of the Appalachian division during the past seven years, and of experimental study during the past three years, on the subject of structural geology in the Appalachian Province. The article must be brief, even at the risk of obscurity; but a more complete and fully illustrated paper will appear in the Thirteenth Annual Report of the United States Geological Survey. Certain Facts. The following facts are first to be taken account of: From the Cambrian age to the Carboniferous there existed a conti nent stretching southeast from the present range of the Blue Ridge, covering what is now eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, eastern Vir ginia, North and South Carolina and eastern Georgia, with some un known part of the present Atlantic ocean-bed. Northwest from this continent lay a sea, reaching to the west and north of the Mississippi. Sedimentary deposits derived from the land accumulated with or ganic remains, in the sea; the greater part fell in a narrow zone along the shore, the remainder spread in a comparatively thin sheet over the bottom of the Mediterranean of North America. The resulting strata measure, near Mauch Chunk, Pa., 30,000 feet; over much of Pennsylvania, 20,000 to 25,000 feet; over eastern Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, but 10,000 to 15,000 feet. The stratified mass, considered with reference to its broad physical char acters, consists of three members: A base of shale and sandstone ; a middle of limestone, 2500 to 6000 feet thick—a stratum probably not equalled in the world for uniformity of character and massive ness; and a top of shale and sandstone, 5000 to 23,000 feet thick. This mass has been folded. In a zone 900 miles long and 50 to 125 miles wide, the strata exhibit such attitudes and relations as could result only from a force of compression acting from north west or from southeast, or from both directions. THE production of metal-working tools has been revolutionized within the last 18 years, since the invention by Taylor and White of a process of heat-treating steel tools, which resulted in increasing their cutting capacity several fold over what it had been before. This was an exceedingly important invention, although it consisted principally, in establishing this fact overheating when it accidentally, occurred in the ordinary:-process of forging, spoiled the steel, but if carried very much farther or to-a point that would have been considered absolutely ruinous to the steel under the old ideas, it resulted in imparting a cutting power several times as: high as had ever been obtainable before. The quality that gives the steel this power eventually received the name of "red hardness." This name originated in the fact that tools possessing this property retain their resistance to deformation even when subjected to, such severe cutting stresses that the metal just back of the point is heated, under certain conditions, to a visible red. It is interesting in this connection to note that the edge of the tool itself does not become red because it is continually cooled by the fresh metal into which it is forced. The result of Taylor and White's invention was an intensive study, of tool steels all over the world and, although there was-great diversity of analysis in the high-speed steels of the early days, these steels today generally have an approximately similar composition, the principal constituents being froth 15 to 20 per cent. of tungsten, from 4 to 6 percent. of chromium, from 1 to 2 per cent. of vanadium, and from 0.50 to 1 per cent. of carbon. It is probably safe to say that standard brands of such high-speed steels will do from five to ten times as much work in a given time as the carbon steels, and even the Musket steels, which were the sole dependence up to the beginning of this century, when the Taylor-White process was discovered. With the increasing cost of labor, it is not surprising that these steels have driven froth the market, for all but limited purposes, the older types of steel.

A process for low-temperature dehydration of natural gas utilizing Joule-Thomson effect in expansion through a throttling orifice has been tested in a full-scale field installation. The results of these tests are presented in the form of performance curves from which the process may be easily evaluated. The effect of separation temperature on condensate recovery from the process is also shown. INTRODUCTION The transportation of natural gas from producing well to the consumer has always encountered the problem of hydrate prevention. This problem has become increasingly important in the past ten years due to the rapid increase in produced gas volumes, production pressures, transportation pressures and distance from producing wells to consumer. Natural gas, as normally produced from gas or gas-condensate wells, is saturated with water vapor at well-head conditions of temuerature and pressure. The solution of the hydrate problem require; but one basic process — dehydration of the gas to a water content which will result in a water dew-point below the minimum temperature to be encountered from the producing well to the point of consumption. Much of the recent development of gas and gas-condensate reserves in the Gulf Coast Area has been in locations which are accessible only by water. High well-head pressures, pipeline construction and maintenance costs and the desirability of final central gas-condensate separation facilities have stimulated the development of dehydration equipment which can be installed at each well and which will permit hydrate-free transportation of both gas and condensate in the same line to central facilities. There are four types of natural gas dehydration processes now used: 1. Adsorptive processes. 2. Absorptive processes. 3. Chemical reaction processes. 4. Refrigeration processes. The first three of these processes are indirect in that they require use of adsorbents, absorbents or reactive chemicals. These materials require regeneration and part of the total gas stream is consumed in the regenerative process. Indirect processes have a wide range of flexibility as defined by allowable operating pressure and temperature, but most are not easily adapted to automatic operation. The refrigeration process described in this paper was designed for installation at the producing well-head. It requires no regenerative cycle and with normal well-head temperatures no external source of heat. The flexibility of this process is limited only by the pressure drop which may be allowed between well-head and transportation line. The mass of these hydrates has low continuous porosity and permeability. Joule-Thomson effect. or the reduction in temperature which occurs when natural gas is throttled throusll a restrictive orifice, is the basic phenomenon which permits efficient use of refrigeration for the purpose of dehydrating natural gas. A process for low-temperature dehydration of natural gas utilizing Joule-Thomson effect in expansion through a throttling orifice has been tested in a full-scale field installation. The results of these tests are presented in the form of performance curves from which the process may be easily evaluated. The effect of separation temperature on condensate recovery from the process is also shown. INTRODUCTION The transportation of natural gas from producing well to the consumer has always encountered the problem of hydrate prevention. This problem has become increasingly important in the past ten years due to the rapid increase in produced gas volumes, production pressures, transportation pressures and distance from producing wells to consumer. Natural gas, as normally produced from gas or gas-condensate wells, is saturated with water vapor at well-head conditions of temuerature and pressure. The solution of the hydrate problem require; but one basic process — dehydration of the gas to a water content which will result in a water dew-point below the minimum temperature to be encountered from the producing well to the point of consumption. The introduction of the scintillation counter into field use for gamma-ray well logging has provided a new tool with special utility for the deternzination of natural radioactivity of sediments. Previous subsurface gamma-ray measurements have indicated only the total amount of radioactivity of the sediments. With the scintillation counter, the relative amounts of the elements which emit gamma radiation can be determined. Sediments logged included 35 zones in wells located in the Teras Gulf Coast, East Texas, and West Teras. Although the data obtained from measurements made to date are not sufficient to evaluate the possibilities of spectral logging, it appears likely that spectral measurements will yield information of geologic value. INTRODUCTION Although variations in the natural radioactivity of sediments were recognized as early as 1909,1 the appli- cation of such variations to borehole logging was not made until almost 30 years later. A group of Russian workers in the early 1930's were successful in making crude measurements of natural gamma activity in an oil well borehole. The first practical gamma-ray logging system was developed by Howell and Frosch2 in 1939. Induced radioactivity, or neutron, logging appeared soon after the introduction of gamma-ray logging. After early work had demonstrated the potentialities of radioactivity logging, development of sensitive and stable logging equipment for field use followed, so that neutron and natural gamma logs are now run routinely and have proved to be extremely valuable in characterizing subsurface formations. Even though tremendous strides have been made in developing radioactivity logging, it is apparent that the ultimate in the method of logging has not been reached, for, until very recently1 in none of the commercially available logging systems has advantage been taken of the fact that gamma radiation is composed of a spectrum of rays, each ray having a distinct and characteristic energy. An individual gamma ray originates in a single element and has energy determined by the element. The inten- sity of radiation, or number of rays emitted from unit volume in unit time, is determined by the concentration of the element. If it were possible to sort out these gamma rays and assign them to their parent elements, thereby essentially analyzing for the elements, a wealth of new information descriptive of formation material and fluid content would be at hand. For example, if in natural gamma logging, the gammas due to potassium and to the thorium and uranium series were measured individually, data would thus be available on the concentrations of each of the three elements, adding materially to the information content of the log. In contrast, conventional gamma logs measure only a quantity proportional to the combined concentrations of uranium, thorium, and potassium. The naturally radioactive elements occur in sediments in concentrations dependent on source material of the sediment, and through their chemical characteristics, on conditions of deposition,' so that the individual concentrations may be diagnostic for particular formations. These concentrations, particularly if measured in situ, could lead to a powerful tool for correlation and for reflecting environmental conditions under which sedimentation took place. The Ti-Al-V system has been delineated from 50 to 100 wt pct Ti and front 600 to 1400°C by X-ray and ntetallographic techniques. Isothermal sections were delineated at 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, and 1400°C. X-ray and metallographic evidence indicated the presence of two phases and in addition to those reported by previous investigators of the ternary system'-3. T HE titanium-rich region of the Ti-Al-V system as originally proposed by Rausch et UZ, and Jordan and Duwez3 was based on the binary Ti-Al diagram as proposed by Bumps et uZ. As additional phases have been shown to exist5-' in the region previously thought to be all a, the titanium-rich region of the Ti-Al-V system is open to serious question. Therefore, in order to determine the effect of the indicated changes in the Binary Ti-Al system on the ternary Ti-Al-V system the present investigation was initiated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedures in this investigation are the standard techniques used in the study of titanium-alloy systems which have been described in detail previously.1° Consequently, only details pertinent to the present work are discussed. The alloys employed for the delineation of this system were prepared from titanium obtained from the Bureau of Mines (73 BHN) 99.99 pct Al and 99.7 pct V, by the consumable arc-melting technique. The titanium was premelted into buttons of 25 g because spattering during the first melt caused uncontrollable loss of alloying constituents. Typical analyses of the material used have been reported elsewhere Attempts to hot roll the alloys prior to heat treatment were made on the first series of alloys prepared, but as the area of extensive hot workability was fairly restricted, see Table I, this practice was discontinued. The times of isothermal annealing are given in Table 11. A preliminary heat treatment of 96 hr at 1000°C was used prior to heat treatment at lower temperatures. The standard techniques used for polishing specimens involved belt-grinding, grinding on emery paper, polishing electrolytically, and etching with Remington "A" etch. In the low-alloy region it was found that the oRo etch, developed by Ence and Margolin,o gave better contrast between phases. Where this procedure did not differentiate between phases clearly, the method of stain etching developed by Ence and was used. It has been previously reported15 that filing of titanium alloys is not desirable for producing X-ray powders, since the powder becomes contaminated by the file material. Therefore, for those samples not brittle enough to Crush, the procedure described below was used. The specimen was wrapped in molybdenum sheet and placed in a vacuum system and evacuated to 0.03 p. Palladium-pur if ied hydrogen was then admitted to the system until a partial pressure of 5o Cm of H was reached. The specimen was heated in the system to the temperature of original heat treatment and was slowly cooled over a period of 3 hr to 400°C while the partial pressure of hydrogen was maintained. The sample was removed from the system after it had completely cooled and was crushed to a powder of 230 to 270 mesh. The powder, wrapped in molybdenum sheet, was dehydrogenated at the temperature of original heat treatment until a partial pressure of 0.03 p was maintained in the system for at least 1/2 hr. During the past ten or twelve years, the average reader of newspaper and magazine articles has been led to believe that enormous deposits of high-grade coal exist in the northland and that these can be mined for practically nothing. But much of the reputed glitter and attractiveness of Alaskan coals disappears when viewed at close range. Many areas of coal-bearing rocks are widely distributed geographically from Cape Lisburne, on Bering Sea, to Admiralty Island, south of Juneau. Bituminous coal is found at Cape Lisburne, on the Bering Sea, at Five Finger Rapids on the upper Yukon, and at Herendeen Bay and Chignik Bay; lignite is found on the Kobuck River, along the Yukon River from points near the mouth to Tonakat, near Rampart, at Dawson, on the east shore of Cook Inlet, and in the Tanana Valley, 50 mi. south of Nenana. The Susitna and Matanuska Valleys contain coal ranging from lignite to anthracite, and in the Bering Lake district, there are coals ranging from semi-bituminous to anthracite. No effort will be made to describe all of these fields, but the writer will confine himself to the four principal fields, namely, the Nenana field! in the interior of Alaska, tributary to the Fairbanks district; the Matanuska field, in the Matanuska Valley; the Kachemak Bay field on the east shore of Cook Inlet; and the Bering River field, east of the mouth of Copper River. Nenana Coal Field The Nenana field occupies an area east of the Nenana River 70 mi. (112 km.) southwest of Fairbanks and approximately 50 mi, from the town of Nenana, which is located at the junction of the Alaskan Railway and the Tanana River. It is on the northern flank of the Alaskan Range and occurs within the foothills of that district. The elevations range from 1000 to 4000 ft. (304 to 1219 m.). Future developments may prove the field to extend from a considerable distance west of the Nenana River to the headwaters of the Tanana River. The coal measures are of Tertiary age and are probably Eocene. They are not badly deformed by folding, but portions of the field show

In view of the great interest now taken in the tests of castiron and details of foundry practice, with the number of investigators at work, and recent improvements in the methods of research, it would seem that the time is ripe to attempt the solution of some of the many problems with which iron founders have to contend. Recent papers and discussions on these subjects* have opened up s large field for investigation, and have emphasized the importance of many considerations generally overlooked. With the view of promoting a comprehensive and systematic discussion, I have attempted to tabulate, in conveilient form, some of the most important points for investigation, on the general plan suggested, with such good results, by our former President, H. M. Howe, for the discussion on the Physics of Steel, at the Virginia Beach meeting, last year.
