Evidence has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its ('Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,l-l2 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends— including coals numbered I to 55B, inclusive —which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or 18-in. cylindrical retorts.13 In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from 0.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the 90 coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

In Bessemer-steel practice, air is blown through a bath of iron, or projected strongly upon its surface to burn out silicon, manganese, and cafbon. Toward the end of the blow, when the iron is not protected from oxidation by these elements and the excess of air becomes great, there is oxidation of the iron. In open-hearth practice, the same difficulty is experienced with dissolved gas and oxides in the product, though not to as great or severe a degree as in the Bessemer process because the oxidizing conditions grow less severe as the end of the heat is approached, and if the bath is allowed to boil for a time it undoubtedly frees itself from a large part of the gas and oxides which have been absorbed in the earlier part of the process. Basic open-hearth steel is usually assumed to contain a larger proportion of oxides than acid open-hearth steel, but it may be said that all steel, Besserner and open-hearth, contains more or less oxide of iron dissolved in the fluid metal at the end of the "blow" or "heat." That certain metals are solvents for their respective oxides has been shown, in the case of copper, by Heyn, and, in the case of iron, by Law. It is indicated that the solubility of iron oxide in iron increases with the purity and temperature of the metal. This confirms what is observed and known by operating men, and these observations may be summarized as follows: 1. Cast iron. is rarely subject to oxidation, as is logical from its composition. 2. Normal steel, unless deoxidizers are added, contains blow holes. 3. Steel known to be oxidized is full of blow holes. 4. The addition of deoxidizers prevents, to a greater or less degree, the formation of blow holes in normal steel. With these observations in mind, it is logical to deduce that the cause of blow holes lies in part in the presence of dissolved oxide of iron in the molten steel and its consequent reaction with the carbon of recarburizers, when these are added, to form gases. Success in this operation is much promoted by adhering to a definite plan. Random work is of little account. In general, anything done that will enable the blast to pass through the obstruction, providing the melted products can be got away from the tuyeres, is all that is necessary. Hence the utility of high explosives in breaking up the chilled mass in the hearth. (This, by the way, should be done with the wind on, so as to prevent the filling of the tuyeres with the usual rush of cinder following the explosion.) If from any cause it is not expedient to use explosives, the simple but very effective instrument known as the kerosene or hydro-carbon blow-pipe can be depended upon to perforate the contents of a blastfurnace hearth to any extent required. It consists, as used in the Champlain district (first by Mr. Charles H. Foote), of several pieces of gas-pipe, liberally supplied with elbows (five in number) so as to be flexible; one end being connected to a tuyere-stock and the other brought to bear upon the place to be melted out. A 1/4-inch pipe leads from the last length, or blow-pipe proper, to a reservoir of kerosene or crude oil, set high enough to overcome the blast-pressure, This 1/4-inch pipe should have a valve conveniently located to regulate the flow of oil, and also another next to the reservoir. With a good hot blast and a surprisingly small quantity of oil, this apparatus will melt, burn or mechanically dislodge anything around a blast-furnace hearth excepting firebrick and water-cooled castings or plates. It may be helped by vigorous prodding with a suitable steel bar, to detach the fused but sometimes sticky material. A very good way to operate on a chilled hearth with it, is to open up a hole from a cinder- or iron-notch to the nose of the most convenient tuyere and then make a blow-pipe of the tuyere by turning

Oil burners, oil furnaces, and methods of installation, have been the subject of many articles, but information concerning oil-burning systems, based upon scientific principles, is still in great demand, especially in the manufacturing districts of our country. Fuel oil, as it is termed (this being the residuum from oil refineries), has for many years been of great service to our manufacturers, and has justified its popularity not only by producing a superior manufactured product, but by turning out approximately 50 per cent. more product than can be made with coa1 fuel under like conditions. To install a system requiring only an oil-storage tank, a small pump, and an oil-supply main with numerous laterals leading to the various burners, furnaces, boilers, etc., is a comparatively simple matter; and, because fuel oil is very volatile, it is not necessary to heat it, even during the winter months in a very cold climate. Furthermore, only a small amount of power is required to atomize fuel oil, this often being done by a positive pressure blower, or by a mechanical burner. An analysis of fuel oil, together with that of various other liquid fuels, is given in Table I.

A digital computer program to mathematically simulate the effect of limited changes in feed rate in the range of 80 to 95 tph on a plant-scale wet grinding circuit has been developed and tested. The circuit studied included an 8-ft-diam X 12-ft rod mill operating in open circuit and feeding two parallel 12-ft-diam x 10-ft pebble mills, each one operating in closed circuit with an 8 X 32-ft rake classifier. The simulation is an empirical one based on two sets of data collected manually from the operating circuit under what was said to be steady-state feed rates of 80 and 95 tph with all other operating variables also at steady state. The procedure is a combination of several published approaches to the modeling of grinding mills and classifiers and it is applicable to a wide range of circuits. The program permits the computing of the size distributions of all feeds and discharges of all grinding units and classifiers in the circuit for a specified feed rate. The data used in this report for demonstrating the program are unsatisfactory since the circuit was not operating under steady-state conditions when it was sampled. Consequently the circuit model parameters could not be accurately estimated. The predictive power would be greatly improved if new data were obtained under true steady-state conditions.

Grain boundary M23CB precipitates have been shown to form by a process involving the migration of an austenite grain boundary, and each plate of precipitate is in parallel orientation with one of the austenite grains constituting the boundary. The carbide distribution and morphology appear to be sensitive to grain boundary mis orientation. Some areas of austenite grain bowzdary permit the development of an array of M,C, particles, some of which are in parallel orientation with one grain and some with the other grain constituting the boundary. Massive carbide at grain boundary triple points is also shown to be in parallel orientation with one constituent grain. PREFERENTIAL precipitation during aging of carbides of the type (Fe,Cr)23C6, usually written MZ3C6, in grain boundaries of quenched austenitic stainless steels has been widely recognized. M23C6 has a complex cubic crystal structure' which contains ninety-two metal atoms and twenty-four carbon atoms per unit cell. Less energy is involved in forming grain boundary precipitates than in the formation of intragranular precipitates, and the process is further enhanced by the accelerated diffusion rates in the boundaries and by the probability of segregation of chromium atoms and carbon atoms to the region of the grain boundaries during prior solution heat treatment in order to reduce lattice strain. Early electron micrographic studies2, 3 involving either extraction replica or normal replica techniques established the geometric or dendritic form of the carbide particles, although this approach led to dis- pute as to whether the particles grew within the plane of the boundary or grew into the matrix.4-6 More recent thin-foil studies' have claimed to identify a discontinuous precipitation process involving M23C6 at grain boundaries, and the object of the present work was to attempt to clarify the situation using modern electron micrographic and diffraction techniques. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.1) Material. The steel selected for this work had a base composition of 24 pct Ni-25 pct Cr-3 pct Ti and contained about 0.04 pct C. The full analysis if given in Table I. This alloy was in the form of strip which had been hot- and cold-rolled to a thickness of 0.6 mm. 1.2) Heat Treatment. Specimens 4 cm long by 1 cm wide were solution-heat-treated for 3 hr in argon at 1150°C, followed by water-quenching. Specimens were subsequently aged in vacuo at 750°C for periods up to 500 hr. 1.3) Preparation of Electron Microscope Specimens. The heat-treated strips were cut bv spark machining into discs of 3 mm diam and 0.6 mm thickness. he-discs were dished on both sides using an electrolytic jet of 15 pct HCl electrolyte at 80 v. Final electro-polishing of the discs was carried out using 10 pct perchloric acid, 20 pct glycerol, and 70 pct ethanol at 10 v. The current density was kept below 300 ma. cm"2 by cooling the electrolyte to 0" to 5°C. As soon as a small hole appeared, the electropolishing was stopped and the specimen was quickly washed with ethanol.

INTRODUCTION The importance of determining dips of subsurface formations in wells, especially in wildcat wells, is self-evident and need not be enlarged upon. Various dipmeter instruments have been described in technical literature1,2,3,4 over the years. The introduction of the continuous dip-meters3,4 has made the earlier types obsolete. Continuous dipmeter logs are run by at least two different major service companies. Included as part of the service are a limited number of dip calculations—usually 10—made at different levels from the log. Very frequently this is the total result of a dip survey. It is believed that dipmeter surveys would be of considerably more advantage if geologists and engineers were able to make their own calculations from the original records. Determination of dips from the dipmeter record starts with the correlation of three log curves taken at different sides of the borehole. It cannot be over-emphasized that the quality of the results hinges primarily on this correlation. Nobody should be better qualified to correlate logs than a subsurface geologist or field engineer. The next requirement is to have an easy yet accurate way of computing the dip from the correlated points. Service companies use a mechanical device for this purpose. Directions for a graphical method were given in a recent article by B. 0. Prescotts. This paper describes a different graphical technique which, in our experience, is simpler, faster and at least as accurate. The entire manipulation is carried out on the stereonet in a number of easy moves. The paper is divided into two parts. This first part contains the introductory sections and full explanation of the geometry involved. The second part reviews the reading of data from an actual field log and summarizes the practical rules for computation of dips, the whole process being illustrated by an example. Following the outlined procedure, one could calculate a good many levels in a relatively short time, thus being able in particular to check suspected anomalies such as fault zones or unconformities in as close detail as the log will permit. GENERAL EXPOSITION OF THE METHOD Prnciple of the Dipmeter The position of a plane in space is defined by the location of three points, not on a straight line. Referring to Fig. I, if a borehole traverses a bedding plane, we can determine the strike and dip of the bed by finding three points which are not in line along this plane. Such points as A, B, and C are obtained with the dipmeter. The device consists of three electrodes (or caliper arms)1, 2, and 3 spaced at 120 angles, as schematically indicated, whose readings are separately recorded (Curves 1, 11, 111, to the right). When electrode 1 passes the boundary of the bed, Curve I will kick, etc. From these curves, we know the relative distances of points A, B, C, measured along the axis of the hole. If A is at zero, then B and C are at levels d1 and d2 up the hole,

If the total volume of a diffusion couple changes during the diffusion, the measurement of distance becomes ambiguous. Use of distance parameters as suggested by Hartley and Crank is discussed. For small concentration differences, the standard form of Fick's second law is retained with conventional length units and the in- terdiffusion coefficient D. It is shown how D can be calculated from experiments involving large concentration differences and analyzed in terms of distance parameters. 'The merits of incremental diffusion couples involving small concentration differences are emphasized. THE conventional form of Fick's second law for one-dimensional diffusion of component B in a binary solution of A and B is where c, is the concentration of component B; x, the distance; t, the time; and D, the interdiffusion coefficient which may depend on ca. Hartley and Crank' have pointed out that Eq. 1 applies only if the total volume of the diffusion couple does not change during the diffusion process; otherwise, the definition of x becomes ambiguous. No change in total volume takes place if the specific volume of the solution is a linear function of the weight fraction Wb, or if the molar volume is a linear function of the mol fraction N. In some alloys, however, these relationships do not hold, and then it is necessary to introduce a modified measure of distance, 4 in order to retain the general form of Eq. 1. The application of Hartley and Crank's suggestions to diffusion in alloys has been discussed by Wagner.' Relation Between Measure of Distance and Units of Concentration The definition of [ depends on the choice of units for the concentration c,, as follows: 1—If the concentration ca is measured as the weight fraction W, (or weight percent), [ = 5, has to be defined so that equal increments of contain equal increments of mass m of the solution, e.g., dm = pSdx = Sdw [2] where p is the local density of the solution, and S is the cross-sectional area in sq cm which is taken to be constant in this problem of one-dimensional diffusion." * da Silva and Mehla have demonstrated the constancy of the cross-sectional area in the usual type of diffusion couple. In my paper on " End-Lines and Side-Lines in the Mining Law," read at the New York meeting of February, 1889 (Trans., xvii., 787), I discussed certain points involving the rights of a locator, B, who had located and surveyed a piece of ground, X + Y, of which only Y was properly subject to location, X being already held by another claimant, and had applied for and received a patent, granting X + Y, " excepting and excluding X." The paper concluded with the following questions : " Is there any difference in effect between the grant to him of Y simply and the grant of X + Y, ' excepting and excluding X' ? Why should any mining locator stake out his boundaries upon another location, and thus appear to assert a claim which he immediately withdraws? What is the legal force of such boundaries, established upon the land of another?" After calling attention to the fact that the entrance upon another's land for such a purpose is a trespass, and the principle that no trespasser can create by his trespass any right which he would not have without it, I reserved to another occasion a review of the history of the absurd practice of imaginary boundaries for mining claims, and a discussion of their legal effect. This practice is founded, of course, in the regulations and decisions of the United States General Land Office. There is nothing in the Revised Statutes which hints at it. On the contrary, the terms of Section 2322, giving to a locator " the exclusive right of possession and enjoyment" of the surface of his claim, seems clearly to forbid the use of that surface for the boundary-stakes of another locator. But the Act of 1866, though it provided for the issue of patents upon payment to the Government of so much per acre, and really by implication (as I have always believed) involved the absolute grant of the surface, was not so construed by the courts generally, or by the Land Office. INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining disturbs the original in-situ conditions which induces a series of strata activities and results in creating "mine pressures," the source of all ground control problems. Adoption of self advancing powered supports in modern longwall mining adds a new dimension to ground control problems and thus research. Roof stability, in general, refers to the integrity and stability of the immediate roof which is measured by the maximum exposed area and time duration without support. There are many factors that con- tribute to roof stability problems. In addition to mining height, rock property and stratum components and caving angle of the immediate roof, characteristics of joints and fissures and their degrees of development, faults and underground water, the operational techniques also play a very important role. This paper summarizes these operational techniques and methods of controlling stable and unstable roof. CLASSIFICATION OF THE IMMEDIATE ROOF There are many ways of classifying the roof (1). For practical purpose, the immediate roof in this paper is divided into three groups, i.e. unstable. medium stable and stable. TODAY'S mining industry is witnessing a transition in labor utilization. The drill-jumbo operator, the mucking-machine operator, the blasting crew, the scaling and timbering crew are all specialists. The all-around miner is rapidly disappearing. As mechanization has resulted in a higher order of underground skills; specialization of labor has been a natural consequence, as has the need for more supervision and engineering. Mines now are cleaner, neater, safer, and have a greater productivity per man-shift than ever before. Nothing spectacular like the continuous miner has yet come to the underground metal mines, but t a gradual improvement in methods, equipment, and technical knowledge is achieving the increased efficiency. With the exhaustion of the rich ores and large profits and who-cares-about-the-costs, mining has become a business; that of producing low value ores at costs below selling price. Charles A. Chase, patriarch of Colorado mountain mining men, manager of the Shenandoah-Dives, was one of the first to preach and prove his preachings that mining is a business. He has been mining a lead-copper-zinc-gold-silver ore, much from elevations above 1.3,000 ft, for a quarter century without a shutdown.-The ore is of such low value that most engineers and investors still would consider it foolhardy. Yet he has kept Silverton, Colo., alive, has paid wages without a lapse, has produced $25 million of new wealth and maintained a steady return to the investors. This type of responsibility is increasingly apparent in the mining business and is one feather that can be worn proudly. .Much emphasis is being placed on improving, the productive mining operations-breaking, loading and transportation. Breaking in underground metal mining is done by drilling and blasting. To the writer's knowledge, no chain or rotary-type machine has been developed for mining strong, abrasive rock. Drilling Percussion drills are still the standard drilling machines underground. Diamond drills, that: were the rage a decade ago for drilling long holes, are being superseded by the rock drill. The development of the hard abrasion-resistant carbide bit permits full-gage long holes to be drilled by percussion drills at a lower cost than diamonds. The change in the use of percussion drills is chiefly in the method of mounting. The column and arm are disappearing and the jackleg and rubber-tired or track-layer jumbo mountings are taking its place. At the Homestake mine .lightweight jackhammers mounted• on pneumatic legs using 7/8-in. hexagonal drill. rods and 1 1/2-in, tungsten-carbide detachable bits have been found more portable and maneuverable. They have less air consumption, lowered, dynamite consumption, and more footage and tonnage per man-shift than with 3 1/2-in. drifters on a column mounting. Drills now are mounted on longer feed carriages, drilling up to 20 ft without changing steel. These mountings result in great savings because the driller can set up quickly, drill the entire depth of the hole without changing the drill rod or bit using carbide and one-use bits, and can move his machine quickly to the next hole. One man to the machine is becoming general practice. The result is longer rounds rounds drilled at a lower cost than the previously used short rounds. A jumbo developed in the Tri-State can be extended to mine ore left in the roof up to 65 ft above the floor. Drill-rod life was formerly considered to be about 250 min of actual use. The increase in the drilling time per rod per day has gone up considerably with the development of the jumbo and the long-feed carriage, resulting in which is apparently more rod breakage., Consequently, a great deal of research is being done in the attempt to develop an alloy-steel rod with longer service life to offset the greater cost. Some reports indicate that alloy steel or Swedish steel results in cheaper drilling than conventional drill rod. However, several tests have shown only slightly increased life for alloy drill rod. Undoubtedly, the blow of the rock drill, the length of the drill rod, and the resiliency of the rock being drilled are important factors in the life of drill rod, so it follows that alloy steel might work well in some mines and result in no savings in others. The bit forged on the drill rod is seldom encountered and steel detachable bits are not as common as in the recent past. The one-use bit is gaining popularity because of. the difficulty in rehardening reconditioned steel bits satisfactorily. It is thought that the, carbie-insert bit is most applicable to drilling hard 'rock' where the steel bit is unable to drill out a full change, for instance, in extremely abrasive

A study of waterflood efficiency, given in terms of oil recovery at water breakthrough and u1timate recovery, has been made on short, consolidated Pyrex glass cores rendered oil-wet by chemical treatment. Contact angle. interfacial tension, permeability and porosity were the variables considered. Oil and water viscosities, core length and velocity of flooding were held constant. The data permit interfacial tension, contact angle, porosity, and permeability to be grouped into a scaling coefficient along with viscosity, velocity of flooding and length of core. Correlation of the .scaling coefficient with recovery at water breeakthrough is found to follow prediction; correlations of ultimate recovery demand a scaling coefficient different from that which correlates breakthrough recovery. The work indicates that, with proper control, a group of similar natural cores, of permeability plug size, call he correlated 10 indicate basic flooding performance. INTRODUCTION The fraction of oil recovered from a porous medium is related to both reservoir conditions and production techniques. An investigation of all factors that enter into this relationship is necessary in order to arrive at the optimum method of exploitation for oil reservoirs. To define this relationship, laboratory studies have been made by a great many investigators. However. an important obstacle arises if the results of these experiments on water flooding are to be applied to practice. Ditferences in behavior are to be expected between reservoirs of the dimensions encountered underground and those used in laboratory work. Factors which play an important role under laboratory conditions may be of no consequence in reservoirs. Laboratory operating practices generally differ from field operating practices. Thus. a mere understanding of the mechanism of the displacement of oil by water is not enough. It is just as necessary that the process be analyzed dimensionally to give continuity and validity to the conversion from laboratory to field. The theory of oil displacement that has come to be accepted by the majority of those who are associated with reservoir mechanics had its beginning in the work of Leverett¹ and Buckley and Leverett2. The banking of oil, observed by many previous workers, was described by the "fractional flow" and the "frontal advance'' equations. The validity of the Buckley-Leverett theory was substantiated by the experimental and theoretical work of Terwilliger et al³; moroever, the theory was extended by the introduction of the idea of a "stabilized zone" to describe the banking of oil. Levine5 showed that the Buckley-Leverett equations gave reasonable agreement between calculated and experimental breakthrough recoveries only if the capillary pressure and gravity terms were included. Rapoport and Leas1 investigated the properties of linear floods and showed that both breakthrough and maximum recovery are related to a "scaling coefficient'' derived from the Buckley-Leverctt equations. Jones-Par-ra and Calhoun6 presented another scaling coefficient which included both viscous and capillary variables. Such scaling coefficients should suffice to predicl waterflood efficiency. However, some experimenters report data which does not appear consistent with the healing coefficient approach. Mine fires, in the Butte district, have been a source of trouble and expense for the past thirty years, for while the actual fire area in most of the mines has been comparatively small, the handling of the gas has generally been a much larger problem than the actual putting out of the fire. The chief causes of these fires have been: Defective electrical equipment, incendiarism or carelessness, and spontaneous combustion. While fires from the first two causes have been numerous, they have generally been discovered and extinguished before they became very serious. Spontaneous combustion has been the cause of most of the large fires. Sufficient heat has been generated by ground movement, high rock temperatures, and decomposition to set fire to inflammable materials (tarred ropes, canvas, dry timber, manure, and hay) left in the gobs some years ago. Also, the heat resulting from the oxidation of the fine broken sulfide ore is sometimes sufficient to set fire to the timbers. In 1906, a fire was discovered on the 1100-ft. level of the Minnie Healy mine about 400 ft. (122 m.) west of the Minnie Healy shaft, which presumably originated, in one of the upper levels, from spontaneous combustion. The fire was walled off by concrete bulkheads and a pillar of ground 100 ft. (30 m.) thick was left below and mining resumed underneath. During subsequent operations, this pillar became cracked and broken and the fire passed into the new workings. It travelled downward and spread rapidly until, in 1917, it had become necessary to wall off portions of the Tramway, Leonard, and West Colusa mines on the 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1800, 1900, and 2000-ft. levels, and the tops of the 2200-ft. raises were sealed. The fire area now consists roughly of a block 1000 by 1200 ft. and from the 600-ft. to the 2200-ft. level. This block is composed largely of a series of parallel northwest-southeast nearly vertical veins and stringers that form a large orebody, with no well-defined walls but badly fractured and faulted, and known locally as "horsetail ore." These veins, or orebodies, are mined by the square-set or the rill method.

AT the meeting of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, held in Denver last September, papers were read by F. H. Brownell, a vice-president of the American Smelting and Refining Co. and chairman of its finance committee, and by H. Foster Bain, former director of the United States Bureau of Mines and now secretary of the A. I. M. E.. which dealt thoroughly with certain phases of my sub-ject. These addresses can hardly have failed to awaken serious reflection in all who listened to them; but their implications have apparently not penetrated the con-sciousness of bankers, economists and statesmen, whose business it is, or should be, to prepare for the economic and social changes which must inevitably follow, if the conclusions which I shall outline hereinafter are true. In discussing this subject I wish to disclaim any intention or desire to forecast the course of the metal markets or the immediate prospects of the mining in-dustry. The facts' adduced must inevitably influence the value of metals, the activity and profitableness of mining, and perhaps also the social status of those en-gaged in it. But my forecasts do not refer to this year, next, year, or the year after. The nearest ap-proach to a date on which I will venture is that the relative scarcity of gold may begin to make itself felt in something like ten years from now, but its effect will not culminate for several years thereafter. Scarcity of new gold is likely to be offset, to some extent, by increasing use of currencies based on credit; but unless it is found possible to dispense with the gold standard altogether, this can hardly prevent a great ultimate fall in commodity prices. This fall, moreover, is likely to be more severe in manufactured goods than in what are, popularly termed raw ma-terials; and most of all in those manufactured goods which are susceptible to the greatest degree to cheapen-ing by mass production, and which are least counter-affected by increasing metal prices; by which I mean those in which the cost of metal contained forms a relatively small, element in the total cost of production.

The existing large stocks of raw materials have induced misgivings in the minds of many as to near-view prospects for a return to higher commodity price levels. Until stocks are materially reduced—and this operation will probably extend over a protracted period—a buyers' market will continue. Meanwhile the matter of production cost becomes more and more a factor of consequence to industrial management, finance and the investing public. With many commodities a general level of costs exists with which the public has been made familiar. Certain conditions surround these industries which, at the outset, determine whether there is a basis for sound commercial results. In other words, it can generally be determined in advance whether or not the cost of production is sufficiently below the normal average price to return a reasonable profit over the years. With all domestic agricultural products there are available exhaustive Government studies in the field of production costs. Such figures as the average cost of wheat, cotton, sugar, etc., are reiterated constantly. There are many products of foreign origin such as coffee, rubber, raw silk, etc., the production costs of which are to most of us matters of deep mystery. Forest products also are so diversified that few but specialists know what a thousand feet of lumber really cost at the mill, especially where remotely located. However, with respect to products of mines, production cost information has been widely disseminated. The literature is replete with such data. Here we find that without any special help from outside agencies the industry itself has given publicity to a large variety of cost figures. For example, we know, or know where we can ascertain, the cost of producing a pound of copper from Chile, Arizona or the Lake Superior district. In many cases we can secure from the company reports a vast amount of detail leading up to the cost per ton of ore and the cost per unit of the metal yield. These records are of great assistance to the mining industry as a means of estimating on new exploitations. This industry has been production-cost-minded almost from the beginning.

Measurement of radioactivity of rocks and ores has developed into a complete method of geophysical exploration. The problem falls into three natural categories: (1) surface radiation measurement in the field and underground; (2) radioactivity logging of drillholes; and (3) laboratory analysis of samples. Portable counters are used in the field for tracing radioactive formations and for quanti tative estimates of radioactive content of surface rock. Wartime advances in battery design make it possible to construct small precision counters that can be carried easily. Even the smallest conventional diamond drillholes can be logged, and actual content of the radioactive element can be measured. The exact grade of very thin active layers or veins can be estimated only approximately. Samples may be analyzed for their alpha, beta or gamma activity, and beta assaying is the best suited to rapid routine operation. Simple calibration with standard samples is sufficient for rough work, but a density correction is necessary when greater precision is required. Samples with high emanating power should be fixed and stored for three weeks to reestablish the radium-radon equilibrium prior to precision assaying. Carno-tite can be fixed by sintering or molding with plastics. Among the important new developments, a low-voltage Geiger tube has been 'designed recently, and crystal scintillation counters hold great promise for high-efficiency gamma-ray measurement. Introduction During the last few years we have witnessed an unprecedented rise in the demand for radioactive minerals, coming as a direct consequence of the discovery of nuclear fission and subsequent developments, the full impact of which is by no means in sight even now. It remains certain, however, that radioactive minerals, and especially those which can be used as ores of uranium and thorium, will continue to be of great interest not only to the prospector and mine operator but also to the various inspection parties envisioned by most of the schemes advanced for the control of nuclear energy on a world-wide basis. It is clear, therefore, that the measurement of radioactivity in rocks in the field as well as in samples in the laboratory has become a method of geophysical exploration of some importance. If we consider the recent technological advances in the general fields of nuclear physics and electronics it seems proper to review the present status of the methods and procedures of radiological exploration. General Considerations Equilibrium If we take a fixed amount of uranium that has just been purified, some of it will immediately start decaying into its first daughter element which in turn decays into its own daughter and so on down the line until the last daughter is reached—a stable isotope of lead. The rate at which a radioactive element decays is frequently expressed as the half-life, which is the length of time required for the decay of half the atoms in a given amount. In the course of the persistent and rapid advance of our country towards the goal she has set for herself, of commercial and manufacturing supremacy, there stand out certain periods or cycles of prosperity or depression, succeeding one another with a comparative regularity as to their ultimate trend, but of varying lengths and intensities. I might compare this course to that of a railroad between two points at different levels, with intervening mountain ranges and valleys, the up-grades climbing towards the final upper terminal of prosperity, while the down-grades retard the ascent, and tend to return to the valleys below. Just at the present time we are evidently at the bottom of one of these valleys, and, before starting to climb the next divide, it may be prudent for us to look into the condition of our rolling-stock, and especially into that of our brakes, and see what the experience of our downward journey has taught us, and whether we are properly equipped for the new upward advance which now lies before us. Probably no previous period of the same duration has produced in all branches of mining and metallurgy improvements SO many and so various as have the last ten or twelve years.
