Adequate treatment of the difficulties surrounding the valuation of mineral lands requires that agreement be first reached defining value as understood for the purpose of appraisal. To define value as the price of a product is not sufficient, and does not assist us in using the factors that cause variations in values and in relative values. The real value of any product depends primarily upon its relation to the necessities, comforts and pleasures of mankind. As the necessities, comforts and pleasures of the civilized races differ from those of more primitive man, the value of products varies with the degree of civilization and the environment of the consumer. Coal has no value to the savages of warm climates, and arrow-head flint none to the residents of New York. It has long been recognized that what has been termed " intrinsic value " must be limited to materials that are essential to existence—air, water, food. But " intriusic value" cannot be measured in monetary terms. The intrinsic value of a bushel of wheat is due to the fact that it will support the life of an individual for a certain definite time, but this fact does not enable us to measure or to express that value in monetary terms. It has often been proposed to adopt as a measure of the value of any product the quantity of labor necessary to produce it, but this method is of limited application, and will not apply to what may be termed " intrinsic values." For many reasons it might be well, while assenting to the fact that any material may be intrinsically valuable, to abandon the use of the term " intrinsic value." One of these reasons is the tendency to confuse the idea of intrinsic value with a value that is conferred by economic conditions, that is purely artificial and that may be permanent or evanescent. THE changes that have occurred in metal mining in the past 75 years include almost everything that we know about modern mining. It is true that in odd corners of the world mining is still carried on as it was before that period, but in the United States such instances are rare. Everything has changed to some extent. Even picks and shovels have changed in design and materials. At the beginning of this period steam power had been used for pumping and hoisting for nearly 75 years, but almost every other operation underground was performed by manpower. Although mining was carried on in a small way east of the Appalachian Mountains before the Revolution, and continued thereafter on an increasing scale for more than 100 years, it was not until the discovery of the iron and copper deposits in Michigan and Minnesota and the opening of the mineral areas of the West after the building of the transcontinental railroads that the real development of modern metal mining began. In the same period many problems of deep mining in South Africa were solved by new techniques in shaft sinking and hoisting. Before this time knowledge of mining and skill in its performance were handed down from father to son by the apprentice system, and the son learned to do things in the way his father and grandfather had done them. THE melting point of molybdenum is 2625° ± 50°C. Heretofore the metal has been considered too refractory to be melted in commercial quantities; hence, it has been formed into rod, wire, and sheet by the methods of powder metallurgy, wherein the temperatures do not exceed 90 per cent of the melting temperature. The manipulation of liquid metals at temperatures of about 2000°C. and above presents some difficult problems in heat transfer, in purification, and in container materials. For metals melting at such high temperatures, it is generally regarded as expedient to circumvent the more common melting and casting process by resorting to powder metallurgy. This circumvention is not accomplished without some penalties, the more notable of which are the relatively high cost of the powder metallurgy method and particularly the size limitations of its product. In an effort to overcome the inherent disadvantages of the powder metallurgy method, especially in respect to the limit of size, a project was begun in 1943 at the Climax Molybdenum Co. laboratory to develop a method of melting and casting molybdenum capable of producing larger bodies of molybdenum than were then obtainable. Later, from Feb. 1, 1944, to Aug. 31, 1945, the project was under the supervision of the National Defense Research Committee, Division One. In peacetime, too, there are needs for molybdenum, which make consideration of another process desirable; for example, large parts for heat engines generally, the omnipresent demand for metal of higher quality and lower cost, and the development of molybdenum-base alloys. This paper describes methods for melting and casting molybdenum, with details of the special process needed to make molybdenum castings ductile, and reports some of the properties of what may be regarded as a new, or at least modified, form of the metal. FIRST PROCESS FOR MELTING AND CASTING MOLYBDENUM The maintenance of a temperature greater than 2625°C. in a space large enough to melt several pounds of molybdenum may involve the loss of heat at a very considerable rate. For melting molybdenum, therefore, the source of heat must be of high potential and of fairly high power. Evidently, also, the source of heat must not impair the purity of the product. The electric arc operating in vacuum appeared to meet these requirements and was accordingly the first choice as a source of energy. A number of arc devices for melting molybdenum were examined, and several were tried. In the first experiment, a 20-kw., 60-cycle-per-second alternating-current arc was operated between two horizontal and opposed electrodes of molybdenum. In this arrangement the falling droplets of molybdenum solidified below the arc in an irregular mass. This experiment did not produce a useful casting, but the data obtained indicated that

Exploration activities were maintained at a high level throughout 1966. Numerous significant discoveries and developments in which geologists played an important part were announced. Although the complete results of exploration activities carried out during the year by private companies have not been announced, the following are among the more important developments that have been made public knowledge. In the western states, exploration for practically all of the metals continued at a high rate. Substantially increased interest in uranium occurred this year, and it is felt by many that a real boom in the demand for uranium may come about in the near future. The reasons have been the more rapid acceptance of atomic power than had been anticipated, and that uranium producers can now sell their product to private interests and even foreign countries. A tremendous demand for uranium is anticipated by many, and this has rekindled exploration activity. On the Colorado Plateau, in Wyoming, and in the area around Grants, N. M., a number of companies have undertaken uranium exploration programs, among which are Kerr-McGee, Homestake, Anaconda and Utah Construction. A new uranium orebody in Texas was brought into production early in 1966 by Susquehanna Western.

The grades of spelter demanded by the consuming industries were not definitely established until the American Society for Testing Materials undertook to fix specifications, based on the varying percentages of the common impurities (lead, iron, and cadmium) as follows: Total, Not Leap, Iron, Cadmium, Over. Prime western............... 1.50 0.08 The question which grade was the best for certain purposes and why was left unanswered. The conservatism of the zinc-smelting industry and the unwillingness of the spelter-consuming industries to engage in research work prevented the full benefits being obtained that such standardization promised. The custom smelters, producing spelter in pigs or plates, found it impossible to adhere closely to the established limits on account of the variety of ores treated; and the smelters with long-established and known brands, or those manufacturing their metal into marketable products, like sheet zinc, did not have to abide by the newly established grades based on chemical percentages. Smelters engaged in the smelting of custom ores had occasional complaints about the quality of their metal, as some of the consumers, especially brassmakers and some galvanizers, used the rigid standards of the A. S. T. M. as a basis for obtaining redress from zinc smelters whenever some of their work was faulty. Indirectly, much good resulted from such complaints; for while the brassmakers and galvanizers, on the whole, did not know what was wrong, the metallurgists in charge of zinc smelters were induced to abandon their conservatism and study the influence of impurities in spelter from the point of view of the consumer. W. 0. HOTCHKISS,* Madison, Wis.-When we began to do geological field work in the Lake Superior region, we found a correlation in existence, and, as youngsters, accepted all that as settled. Both Mr. Allen and I, since that time, have seen a great many things that were not apparent nor visible to Van Hise, and those who worked with him; we realize now that the correlation was not final and that much remains to be determined concerning geology of the Lake Superior region. My attitude on this matter is that we should not publish an amended correlation as a final thing. We should avoid, in every way possible, foreclosing the minds of those who follow us in working in the geology of this region. As a matter of fact, no correlation can be final at present, because facts and data are accumulating so rapidly that every classification must be immediately modified to fit further observation. Consequently, my attitude in this matter would be, instead of saying that the iron formations of the Lake Superior region are all Middle Huronian, to say that there may be three Huronians-or four or five- we do not know. I believe it is better policy to hold to our present correlation. I do not believe there is any economic benefit to the mining man or the geologist working on problems relating to explorations for iron ore, that cannot be just as well solved by maintaining our present correlation, with a. wholesome idea of our lack of knowledge and the necessity for further detailed work. Then, if any new horizons are discovered in any particular range, the minds of the investigators will not be foreclosed because some one has said that all the iron formation is in the Middle so that there is no use looking elsewhere for it. There is use looking elsewhere, in many cases, as the ore deposits become exhausted.

With the workable area of coal prospected and known as to workability and quantity and sampled and tested for desired quality comes the determination of the projection and method of working. The best method will be the one supplying the greatest degree of safety, the most merchantable product, the minimum average cost per ton with the largest yield of recoverable coal. Based on coal elevations, taken at the bottom of the seam on all known outcrop exposures, prospect openings or drill holes, coal contours are made on the map to be used in developing the mining plan. The contour interval should be as close as available information will permit. For general utility in layout of mining, haulage, drainage and ventilation, a map scale of 400 ft. per in. is preferable. In mountainous sections, location of the main out- crop opening or hoisting shaft is often limited by the available railroad route and amount of land level enough for a plant site. In level country, where a tipple and hoisting shaft may be placed at will, choice of the plant site should depend on the minimum average underground haul for the total coal to be worked to the new

Many investigators have used the response of the "dimensionless aquifer" to a unit pressure drop or a unit fluid-withdrawal volume to calculate the performance of an aquifer in supplying water influx to an oil reservoir. In the past, these response functions have been calculated with the aid of the Laplace transform. With the advent of ultra highspeed digital computers, it becomes practical to solve for the response functions with finite-difference techniques. The computer method also permits extension of the dimensionless-aquifer concept to include the nonhomogeneous aquifer wherein the permeability and other properties vary as a function of the space co-ordinates. This paper gives results of calculating the response functions for a series of nonhomogeneous aquifers. Response functions are presented for both linear and radial aquifers whose thickness, permeability-viscosity ratio and porosity-compressibility vary. These functions are new and should prove useful to the petroleum engineer in analyzing the behavior of nonbomogeneous aquifers. Results are presented in the form of charts that can be easily used by the field engineer. INTRODUCTION Aquifers which surround many oil and gas reservoirs have the ability to supply water influx to such reservoirs as oil and gas are withdrawn. This water influx, called natural water drive, provides one of the most effective driving mechanisms for the production of oil and gas. In producing a reservoir, therefore, it behooves one to make the maximum use of natural water drive. To achieve the maximum use, the reservoir engineer must be able to predict the performance of an aquifer under a variety of production schemes that may be proposed for the reservoir. Unfortunately, the physical properties which dictate aquifer behavior often are known only within limits. Seldom do wells penetrate the porous strata of the aquifer. Even when they do, quantitative information regarding porosity, permeability and water compressibility is seldom available. It is known, however, that the water efflux from most aquifer systems is governed by a single, relatively simple, linear, partial differential equation. Also, the general physical location of the aquifer boundaries often are known. A technique originall proposed by Hurst1 and van Everdingen and Hurst2 has been found useful in analyzing reservoirs in this situation. The idea was later expanded by van Everdingen, Timmerman and McMahan3 to include the mathematical technique of least-squares fitting. This latter method will be referred to as the VTM method. The basic assumptions of the VTM method include the following. 1. The location of the physical boundaries of the aquifer are known. 2. The flow conditions at these physical bound-daries are also known. 3. The aquifer is homogeneous; e.g., thickness, permeability, water compressibility and porosity are constant throughout. In the VTM method, a material balance is made on the fluids entering and leaving the reservoir. In the balance equations, the water-influx term is represented as the product of the water influx from an arbitrarily-selected, dimensionless aquifer system times an unknown conversion number. This balance can be formed as many times as there are data points in the history of the reservoir. Each time, the conversion number can be evaluated. If the reservoir engineer has picked the correct dimensionless aquifer to represent the real aquifer, the conversion number remains constant for all balances that have been made over the history period. If such a situation occurs, the reservoir engineer can then predict the performance of the reservoir for any type of production scheme by using the function associated with that particular dimensionless system and the derived conversion number. INTRODUCTION The first installation of large, commercial, high gradient-high field cannister and matrix magnetic separators for removal of impurities from kaolin was made in 1973 (1). Since then the technology and equipment have been widely adopted for clay processing with about 12 units in commercial use. These new separators have filled a need, caught the imagination of many and become a technology worth fighting for. A fight has occurred, and a resolution on royalties for kaolin processing, at least, has been achieved. LIMITATIONS TO APPLICATIONS OF MAGNETIC SEPARATORS Other than the use of these magnets on kaolin clay, no other application has yet achieved widespread adoption. Dr. Iannicelli blames inertia, and1 would agree that it is a factor. There are other reasons too, and if they are examined, they may isolate problems that R&D can significantly assist in solving. I'd like to break the problems into two areas. Machine limitations - the mineral properties are there but performance is insufficient or uneconomic. Separation limitations - the mineral properties aren’t there, but the magnetic separation would perform well if the properties were there (size is right; concentration is right, etc).

SAN MANUEL orebody is a disseminated copper deposit in quartz monzonite, monzonite porphyry, and diabase. Quartz monzonite, which is Pre-Cambrian1 in age, is exposed in an area including No. 1 and No. 4 shafts and extending about 2400 ft southeast from No. 1 shaft. It is also exposed in the bottom of No. 2 shaft and in a zone roughly 500 to 1200 ft southeast of No. 2 shaft having its long dimension along a northeast-southwest axis. Churn drilling has shown all these exposures to be parts of a contiguous mass of quartz monzonite lying within and beneath the ore zone.

IT is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly some recent large power stations for blast furnaces, where the blast is exclusively supplied by gas engines using furnace gas. The stations are given in the chronological order in which they were designed, in order to indicate the various improvements suggested by experience. Fig. 1 shows the blowing-engine station of the Bethlehem Steel Co. at Bethlehem. Although the picture shows only five blowing engines, the house now contains 11 engines. In the diagrammatic. plan the arrow shows the position and direction of camera. This station handles five modern blast furnaces of 450 to 500 tons capacity each. In this, as in all the other stations described in this paper, each furnace is blown by-two single tandem gas engines. Ten engines are thus required for five furnaces, leaving one single tandem spare engine. This spare capacity has been shown by several years' experience at Bethlehem to be adequate to insure continuous operation. The engines in the Bethlehem station are right hand and left hand, arranged in pairs. The outboard bearings of each pair are close together so that there is not room for passageway between them. On the right of the picture are shown the inclined drums communicating with the cold-blast lines outside of building, so that any engine may be operated on any furnace. The illustration shows four cold-blast gate valves with pipes passing through wall, but since the photograph was taken the drums have been extended to take care of a fifth valve for a fifth furnace. At the extreme back of the picture can be seen the tubs of three twin vertical-horizontal Southwark steam blowing engines, which, although of modern design and as good as new, are not operated because of the greatly reduced blowing cost shown by the gas blowing engines.

Very recently there has been a quickening of research effort in the field of silicate mineral flotation, particularly as regards the flotation of beryl.' These studies have already contributed much to the understanding of both anionic and cat-ionic flotation of silicates. Of particular interest concerning anionic flotation has been the work done on heavy metal activation of silicates by M. C. Fuerstenau and co-workers.4,7 In addition. in the paper by Fuerstenau, Rice, Somasundaran and Fuerstenau7 attention was paid to low pH anionic flotation of beryl in the absence of activators. US 4,183,794 - Electrowinning zinc from a zinc sulfate solution produced by leaching zinc ore with sulfuric acid. The leach liquor is subjected to electrolysis in a first cell having an insoluble anode to deposit primary zinc on the common electrode. The coated electrode is transferred to a second cell having an alkaline electrolyte, and electrolysis is effected in the second cell to transfer zinc from the common electrode to the second cell cathode in a spongelike form which is readily stripped. The stability of lead ethyl xanthate precipitate in aqueous environment of different pH (4.5 to 10.5) and at temperatures 25°C-60°C was investigated. Dissolution leads to a wide variation of pH, xanthate, and lead ions concentration in solution and to a deposition of solid products of reactions. X-ray diffraction patterns of these solids enabled identification of Pb(OH)3, PbCO3, and PbS as constituents of the remaining undecomposed Pb(EtX)1, together with some unidentified compounds (which give rise to intensive peaks with d values of 2.82A and 1.71A, and numerous peaks of lesser intensity).

Belt conveyors generally are conceded to be the most economical method yet devised for the transportation of large quantities of bulk materials within plants. Belts are coming into greater use for transportation over long distances and are replacing other forms of long-haul conveyance. It is not the intent of the writer to comment on the design of belt conveyors, but to offer some suggestions for improvement in the operation of conveying belts, based on many years experience with belts in several stone-crushing plants. It is the contention of this writer that opportunities for improvement not fully realized by most operators exist in many plants and that a study of the individual conveyors can result in lower unit belt costs. General Reliability It is the fool-proof nature and general reliability of the belt conveyor that is responsible for its neglect. Even when abused, a belt will carry large tonnages and last a long time, often outlasting the personnel responsible for its care. Some operators look upon the purchase of a new belt as an expensive outlay every so many years, rather than a constant and steady cost amounting in belt wear alone to several dollars every operating day. This belt wear for all conveyors in one stone-crushing plant known by the writer costs 1 /12 cents per ton or $12 to $15 per hour, based on the present cost of belt replacements. The fact that these replacement costs are double those of prewar quality emphasizes the necessity of improving the conditions that make belts wear out. Some of those conditions are the responsibility of the conveyor designer, and if a serious original error has been made, this handicap cannot be overcome by the operator. If the belt is too narrow, too steep, or too fast for good loading, the operator finds that he has an inherently expensive belt. The other factors that decrease the life of a belt are more or less under his control. The two factors of most importance are the loading conditions and the alignment. Most of the cover wear and carcass cutting occurs at the loading point and if the alignment is not good under all conditions, edge wear or damage may result, Fig I. Henry Marion Howe, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius. Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: " Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up—by masses of graphite ..." Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in I900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on "The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe's theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication.
