Pumping solids through a pipeline is not new but until very recently other means of transportation were cheaper. Many proposed pipelines for transporting solids, while technically feasible, have not been attractive enough to warrant the financial risk involved. In some instances, the difference in transportation cost was negligible. In others, the threat of pipeline competition resulted in a slashing of rates on existing transportation to the point where a pipeline could no longer be justified. In others, a competitive product was cheaper. FIRST IN PLACERS The earliest record of solids being transported in a pipe was in the late 1850s in California placer mines. Water under pressure was used to force gold-bearing gravel up through a pipe, from 30 to as much as 55 ft, to a point where it could be discharged into a flume or sluice.

The stabilization of the R, a-Mn, and 0-Mn phases have been studied in the Mn-Ti-Fe and Mn-Ti-Co systems. Iron and cobalt both appear to stabilize the (Mn-Ti) R phase to almost the sarne extent. The R-phase region was found to extend from the lowest e/a to slightly beyond the maximunz e/a limit known for this phase. But, while iron appears to stabilize the a-Mn phase, cobalt tends to stabilize the p-Mn phase. In the two systems manganese appears to get replaced by iron and cobalt in each of the mentioned phases. The instability of the a-Mn phase in the Mn-Ti-Co system and the /3 -Mn phase in the Mn-Ti-Fe system cannot be explained on the basis of adverse size effects because atomic diameters for both iron and cobalt (C.N. 12 at. diam) are ziery similnr and not much different from manganese which they replace. Qualitatively, the reason for the stability of the a-Mn and the p-Mn phases can be traced to the more favorable e/a ratio prevailing in the respective systems and to a competing tendency between the two phases. In transition metal alloy systems the o, p,P, R, a- Mn,' and p-Mn2 phases have been claimed as electron compounds. A large volume of work has been done to establish the criterion for the formation of the o phase but until very recently practically no systematic work was done on the a-Mn and the /3-Mn phases. A recent investigation on the P-Mn phase3 indicates the e/a criterion for p-Mn phase stabilization. Since the R phase was first known to appear only in certain ternary systems1 no detailed work was then possible for this phase. The R phase has been recently discovered as a binary intermetallic compound in the Mn-Ti~ and Mn-si~-' binary systems. The existence of binary R phases opens up the possibilities of studying the effect of alloying elements on the stabilization of the R phase. Of the two binary systems possessing an R phase, the Mn-Ti system appears to be more interesting because at a suitable high temperature it is possible to find the three electron compounds, the a-Mn, p-Mn, and R phases, side by side and it is possible to study the effect of a third transition element on these three electron compounds. For the present investigation iron and cobalt, so called B elements for the formation of electron compounds, have been used as the third element to study the stabilization of the a-Mn, P-Mn, and R phases. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared by using 99.9 pct pure electrolytic Fe and Mn, 99.5 pct Co, and crystal bar titanium, supplied by Semi Elements Inc., New York and Gallard Schelsinger Mfg. Co., New York. Weighed amounts of the components were melted in recrystal-lized alumina crucibles in an inert atmosphere (argon) high-frequency induction melting unit. Titanium was made into fine chips for easy dissolution and a special charging procedure was adopted to avoid contacts of titanium chips with the alumina crucibles. Up to 20 at. pct Ti, the maximum titanium content in the investigated alloys, there was no visible sign of reaction of titanium with the alumina crucibles. With a careful control of melting time and temperature the losses were minimized and were always found to be below 0.1 pct. Because of such small and almost constant weight losses, the alloys were not finally analyzed. The alloys were wrapped in molybdenum foil and annealed in evacuated and sealed silica capsules at 1000" * 2°C for 72 hr and subsequently quenched in cold tap water. Annealed samples were examined metallographically and by X-ray diffraction. For all high manganese alloys oxalic acid solutions of various concentrations and 1.0 pct HN03 solution were found suitable as etching reagents. Best contrast between the a-Mn and the R phases could be obtained by using freshly prepared 60 pct glycerine + 20 pct HN03 + 20 pct HF solution. For high iron and cobalt containing alloys, especially for alloys containing the a-Fe, y-Fe, and P-Co phases, 15 cc HNOJ + 60 cc HC1 + 15 cc acetic acid + 15 cc water solution was found to be the best etching reagent. All X-ray diffraction work was carried out (using specimens prepared from annealed powders) with a 114.6 mm diam Debye-Scherrer camera using unfiltered FeK radiation at 25 kv and 10 ma. All calculations for X-ray diffraction work were carried out using an IBM 7044 digital computer RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The two ternary systems, MnTiFe and MnTiCo, were investigated near the manganese rich end, Figs. 1 and 2, and show some common features. In both alloy systems large extensions of narrow R phase regions occur at almost constant titanium contents. At titanium contents higher than that of the single phase R-phase alloys, the same unidentified X phase was found in both ternary systems. The extensions of the X phase close to the Mn-Ti binary indicate that this phase could be the TiMns phase. Too few X phase diffraction lines were present in the diffraction patterns to make positive identification of the X phase. In contrast to this similarity the two systems show opposite behavior in the extensions of the a-Mn and 8-Mn phase regions; while iron tends to stabilize the a-Mn phase, cobalt

Two methods for the rapid valuation of oil properties are in common use. The one best known and most widely used is the "per barrel" value, based on the present daily production of the well, without regard to its past performance or the history of the sand or pool from which it produces. The second method is the "time to pay out," or the lengt of time required for a well to place itself upon the credit side of the ledger, from which time the returns from its production (less the operating expenses) will be clear profit. The time basis for valuation is also commonly used in the appraisal of an undeveloped lease. In most oil fields, it is not thought good business to invest in production that will not pay out in at least 4 to 5 years. Nearly all buyers (except in certain regions of very persistent production like the deep-sand territory of the Appalachian field) expect wells to pay out in considerably less time than this. Like the barrel-per-day price, the time necessary for a well to pay out has been determined for each field, so that one frequently hears a field or district referred to as having a certain time to pay out. This is considered the norm for that field or district and the buyer and seller base their value, to greater or less extent, on their belief in the accuracy of this time. The writer long ago became convinced of the inaccuracy of the barrel-per-day method, except when greatly modified for local conditions, such as the age of the wells, their economic limit, operating conditions in the field, the future price of oil, and the persistence of the sand as a producer. When so modified, this method becomes more of an analytic or predicted probable-yield valuation. While the appraiser may not go through each step in a valuation based on future returnable revenue, his knowledge of the field and the local conditions surrounding his leases make it possible for him to estimate a fair sales value that, in many cases, will be a close approximation to the truth. This is quite different from she commonly understood barrel-per-day value, in that the conditions turrounding the sale of one lease or property at a fair market value may

A method is presented for estimating the effective directional permeability ratio and the direction of maximum and minimum permeabilities in anisotropic oil reservoirs. The method is based on the principle that production from a well in an anisotropic reservoir results in elliptical isopo-tentials about the well, rather than circular. Bottom-hole pressure data from three observation wells surrounding a producing well are required to apply the method. The method involves fitting field pressure data to a set of general charts of isopotentials and making a few simple calculations until a solution is found. The method is based on a steady-state equation for homogeneorrs fluid pow. In addition to the method, a brief discussion of the theory underlying it is presented. INTRODUCTION The existence of a different permeability in one direction than another in oil reservoirs has been mentioned in several papers. Hutchinson' reported laboratory tests on 10 limestone cores and pointed out that one-half of them showed significant, preferential, directional permeability ratios, the average being about 16:1. Johnson and Hughesz reported a permeability trend in the Bradford field in the northeast-southwest direction with flow being 25 to 30 per cent greater in that direction. Barfield, Jordan and Moore -eported an effective permeability ratio of 144:1 in the Spraberry. Crawford and Landrum4 showed that sweep efficiencies could often vary by a factor of two to four, and sometimes considerably more, due to variations in flooding direction and patterns in anisotropic media. These findings indicate that the poss'bility of anisotropy may be worthy of consideration in the development of an oil field. In considering this, it should first be determined if anisotropy exists. If it does, the direction of the maximum and minimum permeabilities and the ratio of their magnitudes are quantities which can be of value in planning the most efficient well-spacing patterns. Past methods of determining these quantities have included analysis of oriented cores and analysis of flooding performance of pilot injection patterns. In recent work, Elkins and Skov5 resented an analysis of the pressure behavior in the Spraberry which accounted for anisotropic permeability. This work was based on the transient pres- sure distribution in a porous and permeable medium, with the solution expressed as an exponential integral function involving rock and fluid properties. The purpose of this study is to provide a method, based on steady-state equations, of estimating the direction and relative magnitude of permeabilities in an oil reservoir from field pressure data and well locations only. The method presented is based on work by Muskat6 which shows that Laplace's equation represents the steady-state pressure distribution for homogeneous fluid flow in homogeneous, anisotropic media if the co-ordinates of the system are shrunk or expanded by replacing x with it is desirable that data be obtained early in the history of a field because knowledge of an anisotropic condition would allow new wells to be spaced in such a manner that reservoir development and subsequent secondary recovery programs could be planned more efficiently. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS A brief discussion of the theoretical basis on which the graphical solution was developed is presented in this section. Muskat's two-dimensional6 olution for the pressure distribution in an homogeneous, anisotropic medium with an homogeneous fluid flowing can be algebraically manipulated to show that the isobaric lines are perfect ellipses. The ratio of the major axis to the minor axis, a/b, is related to the permeability ratio, k,/k,, as follows. alb = dk,/k,--...........(1) It can also be shown that the pressure varies linearly with the logarithm of the radial distance from the producing well. However, the gradient along any ray is a function of the orientation of that ray, and a ..xiable is present when anisotropy exists which cancels out for a radial (isotropic) system. For a system such as that described, a dimensionless pressure-drop ratio was developed which is completely independent of the actual magnitude of the pressures. This was done by arranging Muskat's solution in such a way that aIl variables cancelled out except k,/k, and well positions. However, this solution depends on having a co-ordinate system with axes coinciding with the major and minor axes of the elliptical isobars. Thus, it was necessary to introduce a co-ordinate system rotation factor. The two unknown variables are then k,/k. and 0, and the two measured dimensionless pressure-drop ratios are related to the unknown variables as follows.

Weston Portable Electrodynamometer The Weston Electrical Instrument Co. of Newark, N. J., believes that problems hitherto considered impossible of solution in the designing of portable electrodynamometers have been solved in its new models. The voltmeter, Model 341, is an instrument' of precision adapted to use on alterating- or direct-current circuits, guaranteed to an accuracy of 0.25 per cent. full-scale value either on direct or alternating-current circuits of any frequency to 133 cycles per second and commercial frequencies even as high as 500 cycles per second with very slight error. The polyphase electrodynamometer, Model 329, is accurate to 0.5 per cent. under the same conditions.; Double ranges are furnished in all instruments of this model. All current ranges can be used for 100 per cent. overload indefinitely without introducing error in Models 310 and 329.

Natural carbon dioxide has recently been exploited in the United States in consequence of oil and gas developments in the Western States and the growing demand by transcontinental and transoceanic shippers for solid carbon dioxidc. The discovery by drilling of commercial deposits resulted in consideration of its geographic and geologic distribution and occurrence. Its wide distribution in nature is evidenced by its occurrence in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. The question of origin of carbon dioxide involves consideration of theories similar to those concerning natural hydrocarbons, although available evidence favors an inorganic rather than an organic source. Areas favorable to development of commercia1 production appear to be those in proximity to igneous rocks or in the vicinity of decadent volcanic activity, where, it has long been known, the gas is evolved either free or dissolved in the waters of fumaroles, geysers or mud pots. Structure contour maps are presented showing the Wagon Mound anticline in New Mexico and the Farnham anticline, Utah. A well drilled on the latter supplies gas to a 20-ton plant manufacturing solid carbon dioxide at Wellington, Utah, on the Denver and Rio Grande R.R., whence it is shipped to surrounding territory and to the West Coast. Before funds are invested in a plant for the manufacture of liquid or solid carbon dioxide, whether supplied by wells or springs, an effort to ascertain the volume of gas available is advisable. The use of present methods of estimation of gas reserves with modifications to account for the quantity absorbed by any water present in the producing formation is recommended. The Farnham anticline is used as an example and computations are made of the probable volume of gas originally present in the structure. No attempt was made to compute reserves in the Niland area, California, for the reason that in such areas it is believed the volume is indeterminate. Introduction Carbon dioxide, in liquid and solid form, has found a wide variety of uses other than its primary application in carbonating beverages. It is now used in more than 40 different ways, ranging from cooling or freezing to use in gas or liquid form for mechanical purposes, chemical industry, explosive, fire extinction, and tire manufacturing. Undoubtedly the chief supply of carbon dioxide is obtained from industrial plants or artificial sources and until recently natural deposits of the gas have received little consideration. The following is not offered as an extended paper on the subject of shaft sinking, but more as a description of the present practice of shaft sinking in the Butte district. The Anaconda company is sinking at present the following shafts: Badger State, Moose, Mountain Consolidated, Mountain View, Pennsylvania and Tropic. At the High Ore and Leonard mines the shafts are being deepened by sinking two compartments and will subsequently be enlarged to the full working size by raising alongside the compartments which are now being sunk. The following other companies are also sinking shafts: Butte-Alex Scott, Butte and Zenith City, Boston and Corbin, North Butte Mining Co. (at the Granite Mountain shaft), East Butte Co. (at the Pittsmont shaft), and the Rainbow Lode Development Co. Shaft Timbering. The shafts of the Butte district, generally speaking, are of three compartments arranged in a straight line, and the pump compartment is usually arranged for the use of an auxiliary hoisting cage, as well as for carrying pipe lines and electric wires. The Rainbow shaft is practically square, and of three compartments. The length of the shafts outside of timber will vary from 17 to 22 ft., and the width from 6 ft. 6 in. to 7 ft. Fir timber is used in all shaft work. This may be obtained from the Coast, when it is known as Coast fir, or from Idaho or Montana, when it is known as native fir. The native fir seems to be the tougher wood, but it is hard to obtain clear lumber in the lengths and sizes necessary for shaft work. Some of the shaft timber of the Anaconda company has been treated with creosote as a preservative, but this practice has not come into general use, as the ground of the camp is so heavy that the timbers usually crush before they rot. The size of timber most used for shaft work is 12 by 12 in., while 10 by 12 in., 10 by 14 in. and 12 by 14 in. are used for some of the special pieces around the shaft. The new Leonard shaft is timbered with 14 by 14 in. wall plates throughout.

IN discussing the classification of iron to-day, we are to leave out of consideration the general division into non-malleable or cast iron and malleable iron, as to the adequacy of which no question has been raised; and to confine ourselves to the subdivisions of malleable iron. This has been classified, according to the extent to which the properties imparted by carbon are present (viz., resilience, hardness, strength„ and, above all, the capacity for being hardened by sudden cooling from a high temperature), into (1) wrought iron which cannot be hardened, and (2) steel which can be hardened; and this classification I shall, for briefness, term the carbon classification. Until within a few years all authorities, both metallurgical and general,, have concurred in explicitly recognizing the carbon-given qualities, and preeminently the capacity for being hardened, as the essential qualities of steel ; this is laid down with clearness by every writer on the subject. For several years this old classification has not been sufficient to, meet all our needs, since the genius of Bessemer, Siemens, and, I may add, Holley, has produced wrought iron which has been perfectly melted, and thus freed from certain mechanical adhering impurities. This causes what we call homogeneousness for want of a better word, and gives rise to many important qualities which the old wrought iron had not;. qualities universally recognized, though not readily described. I shall, for briefness, style them the fusion qualities, and a classification based on them., a fusion classification. The investigation herein described was carried out for the purpose of studying, both by chemical and metallographical means, the extent of over-oxidation of steel that can be accomplished by excessive overblowing in a Bessemer converter. 111 addition there are appended some results of basic open-hearth and crucible steels. Remarks on Chemical Methods. The test block used was hemispherical in shape, 4.5 in. in diameter and 2 in. thick. Drillings for analysis were obtained by drilling through the entire solid part of the block, carefully avoiding all cracks and blow-holes and mixing these drillings thoroughly. Drillinga were carefully examined for scale and the finest were gone over with a microscope to be sure all scale from whatever source had been removed. Oxygen was determined by the well-known method of Ledebur, modified according to Cushman,1 with, however, the removal of the preheating tube, which was found unnecessary. This method has been found to give concordant results. Blanks run from 0.0003 to 0.0006 g. Duplicate determinations varied not more than 0.001 to 0.003 per cent. It seems to be generally supposed that the hydrogen method gives only that oxygen which is combined with iron. Whether this be true or not, the content of oxygen existing as iron oxide no doubt predominates sufficiently, so that the result obtained is sufficient to indicate whether the steel is over-oxidized or not. We are well aware that the oxides of manganese and chromium, when existing alone, are not reduced by hydrogen at a red heat. Steam-injection tests in the field have shoum that heat transport into the oil/water region, ahead of the steam zone, may have a significant effect on the production process. Earlier theoretical work on reservoir heating by hot-fluid injection can be used to describe the growth of the steam zone, but only if heat transport from steam zone into oil/water region is neglected. It therefore became necessary to re-examine and extend the earlier theory. It was found that this theory ceases to be consistent with the physical model of the process at a certain critical time, tc, which depends on reservoir thickness, temperature, and quality of the steam. The critical time marks an important change in the heat flow across the condensation frovt: the heat flow, which is purely conductive during 0 < t < tc&apos; becomes predominantly convective at t = tc. Accordingly, at t = tc, the equation which governs expansion of the steam zone changes. On the basis of the new equation, an approximate description for the steam-zone growth during t > tc is developed by making use of upper and lower bounds for the exact solution of the problem. The boundary conditions for heat and mass flow inside the oil/water region are established, and a simple method of detennining the saturation at the downstream side of the condensation front is presented. Experimental results show that the theory gives an accurate description of steam-zone expansion before the critical time. At times near critical time, and also after critical time, experimental data show theoretical steam-zone volumes to be high. Even so, the accuracy of the calculated steam-zone volumes is sufficient for practical purposes. THEORY OF STEAM-ZONE GROWTH INTRODUCTION The engineering evaluation of steam-drive processes is based mainly on a mathematical description of reservoir heating by hot fluid injection presented several years ago by Marx and Langenheim.l This theory can be used to determine the growth of the steam zone,2 provided the flow of heat from the steam zone into the liquid zone ahead of the condensation front (Fig. 1) is neglected. Since we must expect, however, that heat transport into and inside the liquid region (the region between condensation front and production wells) will affect both the water/oil flow and the growth of the steam zone, it is necessary to re-examine and to generalize the Marx and Langenheim theory as applied to steam drive, which will hereafter be termed the "old" theory. Observations made in several field tests emphasize the need to study the heat flow across the condensation front (CF). On several occasions it was discovered that heat was transported in the liquid zone far ahead of the advancing CF, resulting in an early breakthrough of warm water. A well drilled on the latter supplies gas to a 20-ton plant manufacturing solid carbon dioxide at Wellington, Utah, on the Denver and Rio Grande R.R., whence it is shipped to surrounding territory and to the West Coast. Before funds are invested in a plant for the manufacture of liquid or solid carbon dioxide, whether supplied by wells or springs, an effort to ascertain the volume of gas available is advisable. The use of present methods of estimation of gas reserves with modifications to account for the quantity absorbed by any water present in the producing formation is recommended, The Farnham anticline is used as an example and cornputationa are made of the probable volume of gas originally present in the structure. No attempt was made to compute reserves in the Niland area, California, for the reason that in such areas it is believed the volume is indeterminate. INTRODUCTION Carbon dioxide, in liquid and solid form, has found a wide variety of uses other than its primary application in carbonating beverages. It is now used in more than 40 different ways, ranging from cooling or freezing to use in gas or liquid form for mechanical purposes, chemical industry, explosive, fire extinction, and tire manufacturing. Undoubtedly the chief supply of carbon dioxide is obtained from industrial plants or artificial sources and until recently natural deposits of the gas have received little consideration. INTRODUCTION Where and how to spend the exploration dollar to net the greatest economic return, has always been a major problem for mining companies. Minerals are being consumed in ever increasing quantitie: throughout the world and the mining industry is being called on to meet this demand. In view of the present world-wide nationalistic trend, it is becoming more difficult to determine where exploration money can be spent most profitably. An exploration project should be evaluated continually--in the beginning, to define economic targets and later to determine, as early as possible, whether a project has a chance of developing into a venture that will make a profit acceptable to top management. At this point, a decision can be made whether or not to proceed with plans to bring in a new mine. Exploration, evaluation, and development, therefore, must be fully integrated in transforming an exploration project into a profitable mining venture. DEMAND FOR LEAD AND ZINC Lead and zinc are metals basic to our economy and the demand for them will continue to rise as the population in the world increases. If the population continues to grow at the present rate, it will about double by the year 2000. The accelerating demand for these metals is shown by statistics. Nearly half as much lead (48%) and more than half as much zinc (55%) have been mined between the two world wars as in all pre- ceding history. (1)

A method is presented for the accurate calculation of the cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressures of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures of known composition. The mixtures may contain six and quite possibly any number of components including paraffins, isoparaffins, olefins, acetylenes, naphthenes and aromatics. The approach is similur to that used for calculating critical pressures and cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperatures. The critical pressure, the normal boiling point and the approximate vapor pressure behavior of each component are all that art required. A stepwise culculation procedure is necessary for mixtures containing more than two components. From an analysis of 22 binary systems and 118 mixtures, the average deviation of calculated cricondentherm pressures from reported values is 2.4 per cent. For nine multicomponent mixtures the average deviation is 1 per cent. Considering 19 binary systems and 108 mixtures, the average deviation of calculated cricondenbar pressures from reported values is 1.7 per cent. For 15 multi-component mixtures, the average deviation is 2.2 per cent. INTRODUCTION A knowledge of the phase behavior in the critical region of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures is of value both in industrial processing operations and for the optimum operation of gas condensate reservoirs. Accurate methods of calculating the critical temperatures and critical pressures4,6,7,8,9,23 and cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperatures6p10 of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures are available in the literature. If the cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressures could be calculated with equal accuracy, the entire phase diagram of a multicomponent hydrocarbon mixture could be well approximated. The work of Etter and Kay6 is limited to systems containing the normal paraffins and has not been tested on systems containing a heavier component than heptane. In addition, the development of their multicomponent equations is based upon a limited number of mixtures containing from three to six components. Silverman and Thodos have considered systems containing both paraffinic and non-paraffinic hydrocarbons, but their correlation is limited to binary systems and is highly inaccurate for methane systems. Eilerts has done extensive work on the cricondenbar pressure; he has produced an excellent correlation for binary systems. However, his procedure for multicomponent mixtures is chiefly useful for highly complex mixtures requiring a knowledge of the vapor-liquid equilibrium behavior of the mixtures; he has not considered the cricondentherm pressure. The objective of this study was the development of an accurate and rapid method for the calculation of the cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressures of multicomponent mixtures containing all types of hydrocarbons and having a wide volatility range. The approach that was adopted is similar to that used by Grieves and Thodos for cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperaturesl0 and for critical pressures.9 However, methane systems had to be considered separately and a modified stepwise calculation procedure was utilized for the cricondertherm pressure. The correlations were developed in a manner similar to those for critical pressures and cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperatures. Based upon binary data reported in the literature it was observed that the ratios of cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressure to the pseudocritical pressure (molar average), pt/ppc and pp/ppc, respectively, in two-component systems depended upon the mole fraction of the low-boiling component and upon the diversity in properties of the two components. A dimensionless boiling-point parameter Tb,/Tb was chosen to represent the diversity in properties of the components. For a binary system, Ti,&apos;is the molar average of the normal boiling points of the two components involved. For a multicomponent system it is either the molar average of the normal boiling points of all of the components involved or the molar average of the normal boiling point of the pure low-boiling component and of the atmospheric boiling point of the low-boiling-free mixture of

This paper is a description of the opera-tion and results of a Humphreys Spiral Silt Cleaning Plant at the Powderly Colliery 01 The Hudson Coal Co. during the first nine months of operation and follows a preliminary description given at the .Institute cite Institute in May, 1947, in a paper titled "Preparation of Anthracite Silt for Boiler Fuel in a Humphreys Spiral Test Plant" by H. H. Otto, V. H. Wilson and W. L. Dennen. This plant is considered a full size op-erating test plant and, like all new plants, numerous minor changes in the methods of operation have been made from time to time to secure the results desired. Views of the silt preparation plant and of the screening house are given in Fig I and 2. This plant consists of 48 spirals in 8 batteries of 6 spirals each, 36 of which were to be operated as primary spirals and the remaining 12 as secondary spirals. A brief description of the plant and its operation follows. The only material cleaned at the plant during 1947 was that carried in the underflow from the Thickener which han-dles the Breaker waste water. This under-flow, amounting to approximately 2000 gpm of water and containing 12.6 pct of solids, is pumped to vibrating screens where the plus 3/16-in. material is removed. (Fig 3). This oversize material drops into a pocket from which it is trucked to the run-of-mine tipple for re-preparation.

Discussion of the paper of F. C. NEWTON, presented at the New York meeting, Feb-ruary, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 473 to 477. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.-The results of these large-scale experiments, which were carried on at Perth Amboy, show that there are many differences between theoretical conceptions and their applications to work on a large scale. The author has given reasons why the results of bringing a desilverizing kettle to the high melting point of the zinc-silver alloy, Zn3Ag2, melting at 665° C., are not satisfactory. In all probability the alloy is dissolved in the lead; it may also be decomposed by the lead; the practical result is that this high temperature does not work. It remains now for the laboratory man to carry on systematic experiments

The study of the relations between gases and metals is one of pcren-nial interest to all who are connected with the production of high-grade metallurgical products. The data reported here are the outcome of work of which the object is to determine the effects of dissolved gases upon the properties of metals and to gain a more detailed knowledge of the reactions between gases and molten metals, particularly iron, under definitely controlled conditions. We have attempted to reduce our margin of error by dealing with relatively large quantities of metal, from 4 to 13 Ih. (2 to 6 kg.), and keeping the ratio of refractories to metal as small as practicable. The ingots produced are large enough to provide adequate material for making determinations of magnetic and other physical properties. In choosing the bell-jar type of furnace we were influenced by the results of considerable experimentation along the same general line which indicated that, for the scale on which we were to work, it was important to have the furnace structure independent of the vacuum enclosure. The use of a bell-jar surrounding the entire furnace accomplishes this and also gives great freedom of observation during operation and ready accessibility for the replacements which are necessary after each run. Our choice of analytical method was made in the light of the results secured by H. M. Ryder, who used a method similar in principle for the analysis of very small quantities of gas extracted from strips of metal heated electrically in high vacuum. We have presented some selected preliminary experirnental data as being illustrative of the quantity and nature of the gases which occur in iron of different origins, but do not urgc any hypothesis at this time. The Furnace Our furnace may be described as "a high-frequency induction furnacc of the bell-jar type." It is similar in a general way to that described by Cain and Peterson1 though we have introduced certain refinements of
