Large amounts of limestone fines coproduced during the processing of crushed limestone may be useful in the sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2). Accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) is proposed as a low-tech method to capture and sequester CO2 from fossil fuel-fired power plants and other point-sources such as cement manufacturing. AWL reactants are readily available, inexpensive, and environmentally benign. Waste CO2 is hydrated with water to produce carbonic acid, which then reacts with and is neutralized by limestone fines, thus converting CO2 gas to dissolved calcium bicarbonate. AWL waste products can be disposed of in the ocean. Feasibility requires access to an inexpensive source of limestone and to seawater, thus limiting AWL facilities within about 10 km of the coastline. The majority of U.S. coastal power generating facilities are within economical transport distance of limestone resources. AWL presents opportunities for collaborative efforts among the crushed stone industry, electrical utilities, cement manufactures, and research scientists.

IN a previous study of hypereutectoid Ti-Ni alloys' a substructure was observed in quenched powder specimens when the constitution was 100 pet retained ß body-centered-cubic phase. The alloy powders were quenched from 1000°C by a blast of helium gas and precautions already described were observed throughout the work, to minimize contamination. Ogden et al.2 have previously observed subboundaries in the ß phase of a Ti-Mn-N alloy; but this structure was attributed to nitrogen-rich a precipitation. The nitrogen content of the Ti-Ni alloys does not exceed 0.02 pet and the quenching rate was sufficiently rapid to suppress precipitation reactions. Since X-ray diffraction results have confirmed the absence of any second phase which might account for this phenomenon, it seems unlikely that this substructure is explicable in terms of nitrogen content. Fig. 1 shows the substructure in adjacent grains of 100 pet ß phase in a quenched 6 atomic pet Ni alloy. Fig. 2 shows adjacent ß grains in a similarly treated alloy; one grain contains marked intracrys-talline boundaries and the other is completely free from any substructure. The suberystals appear to have fairly regular shapes, suggesting a regular orientation relationship among them. Tempering the retained ß structure at temperatures below the eutectoid eliminates the substructure at an early stage of ß decomposition. At the present time it is possible only to guess at an explanation for this subboundary phenomenon, since very little work has been reported on substructures resulting from phase changes. Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Co. is developing a full-scale pad injection program as part of the overall operational plan for the Valley Leach Facility. As part of the development process the mechanics of the injection methodology are evaluated in the context of physical injection measurements, outcome from geophysical monitoring, and gold leaching theory. The results indicate that hydraulic fracturing analogies advanced heretofore do not accurately describe injection phenomena in unconsolidated and noncohesive material typical of leach pads. A new interpretation is presented and extended to define operational strategies for maximizing gold production.

The influence of soil improvement replacement area in foundation settlements is discussed for soil improvement methods used in Southeast Florida. A 3D Finite element analysis is used for two typical conditions in the area: foundations bearing on loose sands and foundations bearing on a crust of limestone underlaid by very loose sands. Particular attention is given to Jet Grouting as a soil improvement method. The potential impact of the stiffer jet grout columns on the structural foundation design and quality control issues are also discussed. It is shown that in loose sand conditions 15 to 20% area replacement produces substantial reduction in total settlements. Reduction in total settlements for mixed profile is less significant but the use of the method in those cases is directed to reduce punch through potential.

Transplanting the steps used in exploring and developing mineral deposits on land into the marine environment will help developers. While familiar to oil and gas explorers and many other sea-based industries, the marine environment is so alien to the 90s terrestrial miner that the phrase ?terrestrial mines in the sea? is useful for reinforcing the fundamental parallels in mining sulphides at sea and on land. As on land, the processes of ?pre-feasibility study? and ?feasibility study? will determine the economics of mining a deposit. For many, the step into the sea can detract from the need to follow these familiar and recognised steps used when any new deposit is found on land. The technology to mine sulphides in the 1500 to 2000 m depth range exists. Currently, it is not found in a single, integrated and commercially available system but every element available to build such as system is. Transplanting the thinking of the leaders of the terrestrial mining industry into the sea will perhaps be the greatest challenge and reinforcing the basic steps of discovery - pre-feasibility through to feasibility is the best way to achieve this. After all on land one doesn?t ask ?Can we profitably mine it?? before one can authoritatively answer ?What have we found??. Research by Nautilus Minerals Corporation suggests that the mining of seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) will not only be profitable but potentially lower in both capital and operating costs than prevail in most terrestrial deposits. Nautilus is also acutely aware that with the first SMS deposits under title, it will be setting the standards for seafloor mining into the new millenium. Indeed, we have trained on us not only the eyes of the mining industry waiting to see if SMS deposits really do offer radically better returns, but other stakeholders of the sea and the capital markets. Mistakes by any SMS developer could land all developers in ?hot water?. The rush to exploit our deposits for economic gain will be tempered by ensuring there is adequate public debate and consultation for our environmental code. Failure in any facet of a marine mining development could set back the move to the ocean floor.

Na parte inicial das curvas de escoamento plástico a relação sc/sp = 0,92 é relativamente alta, sendo um indicativo que o amaciamento promovido pela DRV é intenso, corroborado a moderada EFE, ?sfe = 66,86 mJ/m2. The current state of the mass transit industry in America will be examined. How and why this important urban activity shifted entirely, or almost entirely, from the private sector to the public sector. Who pays for transit? For day to day operating costs? For capital investment? The prospects for transit's future will be the next major issue addressed. In a word, they are rather good. Over the past decade there have been major new transit investments made in Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Miami, as well as constant re-investment in such cities as New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. While the current administration has put a temporary halt on the initiation of any major new rail transit projects using Federal funds, there are several mechanisms localities have for using other resources for such projects. These will be explored.

SINCE the development of dispersion-hardenable lead-antimony alloys1 in the laboratories of the Western Electric Co., Inc., studies have been made of the effect of various third constituents on these alloys.2 This paper covers a study of the effect of small amounts of arsenic. This element is important since it occurs as an impurity in many commercial antimonial leads and the results obtained are particularly interesting as indicating a class of addition agents which exert a stabilizing effect on dispersion-hardened alloys. EXPERIMENTAL In order to-study the effect ,of increasing amounts of arsenic, a series of alloys were made up containing 1 per cent. antimony, and arsenic varying from 0. to 0.10 per cent., the balance Doe Run lead (99.997 per FIG. 1..-CHANGE OF MICRO-BRINELL HARDNESS WITH TIME OF 1 PER CENT. Hong Kong’s Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) Stage I involves the provision of a system of deep tunnels for transporting to a central treatment works wastewater collected from a number of catchments around Victoria Harbour. For the SSDS Stage I works, about 24 km of tunnels have been excavated in hard rock at depths ranging from about 80 to 150 m below Victoria Harbour and the surrounding heavily developed areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong. Five tunnel boring machines(TBMs) with diameters ranging from 3.2 m to 4.3 m were used to excavate the tunnels. Tunnel excavation has been completed and tunnel linings are in progress. Major tunnelling issues such as ground stabilisation and water control encountered in the project are summarised. An overview of one of the possible future tunnel systems that might be adopted in subsequent stages of SSDS is also presented.

"This paper deals with the results of the variation of thermal conductivity of rocks with pressure on a laboratory scale. For this purpose, the authors have added a pressure-supplying unit to the apparatus developed by Mousset-Jones and McPherson (1986), Önder (1995), Ashworth and Ashworth (1979), and Innaurato and Occella (1989) in order to measure the thermal conductivity under pressure. The values obtained from the tests performed by this new apparatus have been stated using a regression analysis and the related graphs have been drawn. Results have shown that the thermal conductivity of rock varies digressively with pressure. The same results have been obtained in different rocks types. IntroductionOne of the most important tasks of mining engineers is that of establishing, maintaining and sustaining safe and healthy working conditions in underground mines.Heat can have a profound effect on safe and healthy working conditions and is one of the main problems in deep underground mines. In this regard, the temperature of the air passing through the mine openings increases steadily and causes a decrease in the efficiency of workers due to the unwanted physical effects to human bodies in the working area. At the same time, the hot and humid environment resulting from heat and temperature rise causes some important occupational diseases and increases the accident risks in the related openings."

The one free surface blasting of a concrete block was simulated by Discontinuous Deformation Analysis(DDA) method. Comparing the simulated results with the concrete block blasting experiment, the crack growth and the free surface displacement which were simulated by DDA were observed with a high speed camera.

The Homestake Gold Mine at Lead, South Dakota, has been proposed as the host site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. The laboratory will house neutrino experiments in mine workings at the 7400-foot depth, as well as research in geomicrobiology, rock mechanics, and ground-water flow. Initial plans for the laboratory were developed in 2000 after Homestake Mining Company announced the closing of the underground gold mine. Homestake’s owner, Barrick Gold Corporation, had agreed to donate the mine for a laboratory if it could be protected from environmental liability. That initial agreement was delayed, and Barrick turned off the mine’s pumps in 2003, allowing lower levels of workings to begin to flood with water. In early 2004, the Governor of South Dakota signed an agreement with Barrick that would indemnify the company and eventually transfer ownership of the mine to a state laboratory authority. South Dakota’s governor also announced plans to ask the state legislature for funds to help in the initial construction of the laboratory. A consortium of scientists from several states is currently preparing a detailed laboratory proposal for the National Science Foundation.

"The major losses of PGM and base metals in the beneficiation of platinum group deposits occur during the separation of gangue from the value minerals by selective flotation. A number of studies have shown that this negative impact on flotation is due to surface passivation, caused by various ions that may originate from the external water supply or, as is likely in the majority of cases, from the oxidation of the mineral surfaces and the grinding media. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect surface passivation and inadvertent activation have on flotation and how this can be managed so as to increase the separation of pentlandite and pyroxene. The aim was to minimise the percentage pyroxene reporting to the concentrate and simultaneously maximise the pentlandite recovery. The testwork incorporates the addition of an activator (copper sulphate), a complexing agent, such as DETA (diethylenetriamine) and a dispersant (polyphosphate) at pH 6 and pH 9 in an attempt to alleviate the surface passivation of pentlandite and inadvertent activation of pyroxene. Both synthetic minerals and plant ores were studied in order to determine the effect surface passivation and inadvertent activation have on mineral surface alteration and floatability. Zeta potential determinations, microflotation, ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) analyses, laboratory batch flotation tests and continuous flotation testwork were used as tools to study the surface alteration and/or floatability.Zeta potential determinations and ToF-SIMS analyses showed that copper adsorption is non-selective. Both pentlandite and pyroxene become copper (II)-activated in the presence of copper sulphate and subsequently, in the presence of xanthate, adsorption of the collector will occur onto copper activated mineral surfaces. Zeta potential determinations also showed an alteration of the surface charge in the presence of polyphosphate, thereby inhibiting surface passivation of sulphides by slime coatings due to surface repulsion."

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept.9, 2006 at the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The four inductees are Earl H. Beistline (1916 to present), R.A.F. Penrose (1863-1931), Robert M. Reininger (1912-2006) and John Stanton (1830-1906). The inductions will bring to 193 the number of mining “greats” whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements induced by blasting operations at five different sites located close to the residential areas. Within the scope of this study, ground vibration components were measured for all blast events over a long period of time in order to predict peak particle velocity and determine the slope of the attenuation curve for five sites. During the study, while the parameters of scaled distance were being recorded carefully, suitable monitors for all blast events of five blasting sites measured the ground vibration components. At the end of evaluation of the data pairs, an empirical relation, which gives an average line at 95% confidence level, and upper bound 95% prediction line with a good correlation coefficient was established and suggested for each site

The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The ?slope stability radar? (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR remotely scans rock slopes to continuously measure any surface movement and can be used to detect and alert users of wall movements with sub-millimeter precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many metalliferous and coal mines throughout the world. Over 80 systems are currently being used with current operations in 17 countries. Greater than 200 rock slope collapses and waste dump failures (from several to millions of tones) have been monitored, with ?warning? precursor movements recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper will present recent case studies of the SSR operation in coal and metalliferous mines. Slope Stability Hazards and Rock Slope Monitoring in Open Pit Mines Surface mining often creates excavation boundaries which are steeper than those would be created under natural processes in the same rock type. They are also undertake quite rapid stress changes during mining and are influenced by significant external forces such as blast vibrations and changes in groundwater. These conditions are likely to allow some degree of instability to develop in the pit slopes. The hazards associated with this instability of pit slopes can be extremely variable in character; ranging from small cobble sized rocks dislodging and falling from mine benches to complete collapse of entire pit walls. It is usually the position of mine geotechnical or geological staff to assess these hazards for mine operations. The assessment of hazards due to unstable slopes can be done by visual observation of precursor signs such as fracturing or rilling of loose material. A more reliable indicator of instability involves the quantitative measurement of outward movement and acceleration of material as an instability mechanism develops. There is strong evidence that small precursor movements of a rock wall occur for an extended period prior to rock slope collapse (Hoek and Bray, 1981). Development of a monitoring system, adopting acceptable slope deformation criteria coupled with warning systems and design of stabilization or risk reduction measures if appropriate has become a standard method of dealing with slope instability. Framework for Slope Hazard Management using the SSR A framework for the management of slope hazards is shown in Figure 1 (discussed in detail in Harries, 2007). Although this framework is specifically for use with the Slope Stability Radar, a similar framework could be developed for other monitoring technologies for monitoring slope deformation. An important point to consider is the sequential nature of the hazard management framework from selecting the context ? identifying hazards ? analysing hazards ? evaluating hazards ? treating hazards. [ ] Once the context of the system has been developed (for example ? to monitor for rapid bench scale collapse), the identification of hazards is the next stage in hazard management. Identification of slope hazards can be relatively straightforward due to the visual nature of the information that the SSR system produces. The areas of excessive wall deformation are highlighted in color maps of the mine slope with a co-aligned photographic image to review the actual site of interest. The responsible personnel must then analyses this data, usually reviewing the deformation style and rate, as well as the size of area that appears to be failing. This information can then be evaluated against organisation protocols (for example it may be only a small sub-bench failure that will be ?caught? by existing benches and hence can be categorized as a lower risk). Once these hazards are evaluated they can then be treated if required. Two major options are available to reduce the risk during this treatment option. We can reduce the likelihood of failure ? for example by buttressing the failure or de-pressurising of water pressures in a slope. However, the most likely plan of action is to reduce the consequence of the failure. One of the most successful opportunities to reduce the consequence of a slope failure is to ensure that no personnel or mining equipment is present at the location of a slope failure when collapse finally occurs. This has been the major benefit of the SSR system to the different mining operations around the world. "A gold has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution and several leaching conditions have been studied. The leached solution has been recovered by solvent extraction and the optimum conditions have been investigated.SUMMARYIn this investigation, a sponge gold sample (99.92% pure) has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution. The effects of CuSO4, (NH4)2S2O3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4OH and retention time on the gold leaching % (extraction %) and thiosulfate oxidation % (consumption %) have been studied. The copper ion acts as a catalyst in gold dissolution. On the other hand, it also accelerates oxidation of thiosulfate (consumption). It was found in this study that the best gold extraction condition was obtained at 43.2 ks with 0.8 – 1.0x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2S2O3, 30 mol/m3 CuSO4, 2.0 – 3.0x103 mol/m3 NH4OH, 0.4 – 0.5x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2SO4, pH 10±0.2 and 150 rpm. The thiosulfate oxidation was about 15% of the initial concentration."
