A current trend amongst producers is the increase in dewatering of iron ore fines (<0.5 mm), due to an increase in wet beneficiation processes used to upgrade lower quality ore deposits, increased water content in orebodies located below the water table, and increasing focus on transportable moisture limits (TML). Vacuum filtration is commonly used for dewatering of iron ore fines, and as with all filtration processes performance decreases with particle size. Significant improvements are possible with the use of filter aids, usually anionic surfactants and flocculants. Anionic surfactants reduce the surface tension of the associated water, which is then removed more readily leading to improved filtercake moistures. Anionic flocculants used correctly can improve cake permeability, in turn, decreasing cake formation times and increasing filtration rates. In addition to increased throughput, savings and benefits for producers can include: moisture limit penalties, improved handleability, along with energy and water savings.The effect of filter aids on two iron ore fines samples from the Pilbara region were evaluated using a lab scale vacuum filtration unit. The first sample showed a reduction in the filtercake moisture content by 2.3 per cent weight/weight (w/w) with the use of BASF’s Drimax® 1234. For the second sample a reduction in the filtercake moisture of 3.4 per cent w/w along with an increase in filtration rate of 20 per cent was achieved by using a combination of Magnafloc® 5250 and Drimax® 1239 NF, as both filter throughput and cake moisture were considered important by site.CITATION:Haskell, T, Dickie, S and Joe, Y, 2017. "Syncrude Canada operates the largest oil sands crude oil production facility in the world and produces over 13% of Canada’s total oil requirements. To achieve this, Syncrude mines the oil sands in open pits, extracts the raw oil known as bitumen from the sand using water-based processes and upgrades it into sweet light crude oil by fluid coking, hydroprocessing, hydrotreating and reblending. The final product, Syncrude Sweet Blend (SSB), is sent by pipeline to three Edmonton area refineries and then to pipeline terminals which ship the SSB to refineries in Canada and the United States.As parts of the Mildred Lake base mine reached their economic life, they were replaced with new facilities at the Aurora Satellite mine. Aurora is situated on Oilsand Leases 10, 12 and 34, 35 km northeast of the Mildred Lake facility (Fig. 1).In 2000, the first hydrotransport low-energy extraction production train started up at Aurora. A second production train is scheduled for start-up in 2003. Open pit mining at Aurora occurs using two hydraulic shovels, two cable shovels, and trucks ranging from 320-ton to 380-ton payload capacities (Fig. 2).Once the oil sands is excavated, the trucks dump the ore into a crusher designed to break up the big lumps of oil sands and rock at peak rates of 11 000 t/hr. The ore is then transferred by conveyor to a surge pile and then to a mixing box which combines the oil sands with hot water. Following bitumen separation in the primary separation vessel, froth is delivered to Mildred Lake for processing via the intersite pipeline (Fig. 3).The goal of this paper is to illustrate how high precision shovel GPS (HPGPS) is being used at the Aurora mine to aid in mine planning. This can be accomplished by first describing the function of the mine planning department, describing the Aurora orebody, and finally explaining how the HPGPS system functions and how it is employed at Aurora.The short range mine planning department ensures a steady supply of ore is delivered to the plant at the desired grade in a sequenced and economical manner. This is done by creating a mine plan that consists of shovel dig locations that require the shovels to mine in a specified area at a specified elevation."

Cameroon's mineral industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The country's economic development depended on the production and export of crude oil. Oil output was estimated to be 56 million barrels in 1984 compared with 47 million barrels in 1983 and 39 million barrels in 1982. The country's only refinery processed approximately 16,000 barrels per day of crude oil in 1984, operating at slightly over 50% capacity. This volume, however, supplied the domestic need for motor fuel and heating oils. Cameroon's economy continued to expand despite problems and setbacks stemming from the attempted coup of April 6, 1984. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth in 1984 was 6.5%, the same rate as in 1983. Offshore crude petroleum production was the chief factor in the sustained economic growth. The country also maintained a relatively strong balance-of-payments position through oil exports. Investment, ranging up to 25% of the GDP, greatly contributed to sustained growth. The oil sector contributed approximately 14% to Cameroon's GDP in both 1983 and 1984.

Tailings and water management facilities are essential and integral components of mine and mill operations. They must be managed for the long term in order to ensure that safe and environmentally responsible stewardship is achieved. Toward this end, in 1998, The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) published A Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities, which recommended the implementation of a tailings management framework (Figure 1) to integrate environmental and safety considerations into each stage of the life cycle of a tailings facility, from initial site selection and design, through construction and operation, to eventual decommissioning and closure. By February 2000 it was becoming apparent that while mining companies were making significant progress toward implementing and documenting tailings management systems, and integrating them with overall environmental management systems, further effort was warranted in their application at the operational level. In particular, a need was identified for further guidance in preparing manuals that outline procedures for the safe operation, maintenance and surveillance (OMS) of tailings and water management facilities.

Reducing mining costs has become such an important factor in the German coal industry that operators are forced to work only those areas where production costs can be kept low. These areas will normally be located close to the mine shafts because they are easily accessible. Even the shaft pillar is now being considered as part of the winning zone. Before working coal in shaft pillar zones it is essential to assess the impact this will have on the shaft lining. There is a huge difference between sliding and strata-anchored shaft systems. However, if the overburden comprises lightweight soil both types of shaft will have a tendency to protrude from the surrounding ground. This paper presents the geomechanical reasons underlying this reaction and the methods used for predicting and measuring it.

"Crusher sizing and application in mining operations is the selection of a crusher or a series of crushers to reduce run of mine ore to a size suitable for either autogenous or conventional grinding. It is important that the crusher or crushers be sized to operate within the range to which they have been designed. By the range to which they have been designed, we mean that the reduction ration must be held between specified limits. Reduction ration is the relationship between feed size to product size.In todays plants reduction is usually accomplished in three stages by primary, secondary and tertiary crushers.Primary crushers are either jaw or gyratory and are designed to handle run of mine feed at an open side setting of 5-1/2” to 7”. Reduction ration should not exceed 7 to 1.Jaw CrushersThe model size of a jaw crusher signifies the feed opening. A model 60 x48 jaw has a feed opening 60” wide by 48” long. The 48” is the dimension between the top of the swing jaw and the top of the stationary jaw. The 60” is the width between the two side frames. The crusher open side setting is the discharge opening at the bottom of the crushing chamber with the jaws in an open position. When corrugated jaw plates are used, the open side setting is measured from tip of one jaw plate to the valley of the opposite jaw plate. If a jaw crusher has a 6” open side setting with a 1” jaw motion, you could also say it has a 5” closed side setting."

The Round Mountain gold mine, located 90 km (55 miles) north of Tonopah, NV began large-scale production in 1977. During 2008 Round Mountain Gold Corp. (RMGC) relocated the primary crusher facility approximately 300 m (1,000 ft) to make room for the next phase of openpit mining activities. This facility was installed in 1988 and used a log-crib retaining wall and dump pocket. RMGC selected Hilfiker Retaining Walls and Collins Engineers, Inc. to provide design and materials for a new 17-m- (56-ft-) high mechanically-stabilized embankment (MSE) wall to support the haul trucks at the new location. The construction contractor was EarthTech West Ltd. of Norwood, CO. An MSE wall with a cast-in-place concrete face was chosen as a durable, yet less expensive alternative to the reinforced concrete dump pocket that was originally designed for the project. The arrangement of the MSE wall is of an unusual configuration to meet a variety of operational and maintenance requirements. This paper outlines the selection process, design and construction of the MSE wall.

This paper recognises the 25th year of the Morgantown International Ground Control in Mining Conference, by offering a twenty five year review of ground control in the Australian mining industry ? primarily in underground coal. The paper provides an overview of the developments in ground control design methodologies, practices and products. It not only summarises what has been done, but attempts to highlight at least some of the major issues, significant developments, controversies and areas of contention, plus some of the continuing gaps in our understanding or capabilities as we go forward into the next 25 years. Some of the issues included are in relation to: the development of the high strength bolt and cable reinforcement practices widely adopted today and the contrast between stiff and soft systems; a focus on local detail, at the expense of understanding regional stability concerns; dramatic improvements in the use of, and systems available for underground geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring; some of the ground control management trends, including occupational health and safety concerns, availability of suitably trained staff and legislative requirements; the opposing approaches of the empiricists versus the numerical modellers ? is there some middle ground?

The purpose of this study is to develop a mathematical model to describe the oxidation of cyanide with SO2as proposed in the Inco process. This research employed a direct method for measuring the change in cyanide concentration with respect to time as effected by varying concentrations of SO2, copper and pH. Developing this model may be applicable in determining optimum conditions in a process well known and used in the mining industry. It was determined that the reaction is first-order with respect to cyanide, SO2and [Cu+2].The reaction order is 0.15, or zeroth order with respect to [H+] at pH range from 8.0 to 9.5.The activation energy, Ea, is 21.6 kJ/mol. An extensive design phase testing program in which 10 piles and 2 drilled shafts were instrumented and statically load tested to failure, was undertaken to establish relevant foundation design parameters for two bridges in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The bearing strata at both test sites was a calcareous, overconsolidated, firm to very stiff, slightly sandy, clayey silt (locally known as Cooper Marl). Confirmation dynamic and static loading tests on production piles indicated only 50 to 60% of anticipated pile capacities; including consideration of time effects. Supplemental subsurface explorations did not reveal any significant variations in marl properties. Ultimately, 22 static and 75 dynamic tests were performed on production piles for a 2 mile section of the project. Pore water pressures in the marl were also monitored during and after pile driving. A study of unit skin friction in the marl as a function of time revealed two distinct trends: piles driven in areas with a sand overlaying the marl gained more capacity significantly faster than those driven through a clay or silt. Although the insitu marl properties are apparently similar across the site, the material immediately above the marl evidently has a large effect on pile capacity. This effect of overburden on pile capacity was verified by testing piles over a period of two years.

The Marlin gold-silver deposit is in western Guatemala, 15 kilometers south of a major transform fault that separates the North American and Caribbean plates. A district-scale, northwest-trending graben controlled deposition of a greater than 1200 meter thick upper Tertiary quartz latite to rhyolite volcaniclastic sequence. These volcanics were subsequently intruded and unconformably overlain by a small intermediate, latite to andesite, volcanic complex. Classic low-sulfidation, quartz-calcite-adularia veins and stockwork formed a 2.2 million ounce gold deposit, in association with late-stage andesite dike swarms, along a west-northwest striking normal fault on the eastern flank of the volcanic complex.

A finite element model was generated of a Søderberg electrode in a ferromanganese smelter. In this model, the casing and fins were modelled explicitly, and temperature-dependent material properties were included. A two-stage analysis procedure was used, the first part being a coupled thermal-electrical analysis using an applied DC current. As the casing material was non-magnetic, the DC current was deemed sufficiently accurate for this initial analysis. The proximity effect was not considered. Thermal boundary conditions based on assumed temperature distributions in the furnace were applied. Calculated temperatures agreed well with measured values. The joule heat calculated in this step was applied as a load to a coupled thermalstress analysis. The model was applied to a comparative study of alternative materials for the casing and fins. A number of different combinations of materials for the casing and fins were evaluated in a comparative study. The position of the baking zone was used as the criterion for evaluating the potential of each material combination. Based on this analysis, some material combinations were discarded as being entirely unsuitable, whilst the two most suitable combinations will be tested experimentally in the furnace. The stress analysis was performed on the most suitable option. The practical advantage of this analysis was that a number of what-if scenarios could be evaluated and discarded prior to embarking on expensive experimental work, thus limiting the amount of experimental effort required. A mathematical model allows for the comparison of options under controlled conditions, where parameters of interest can be varied individually, with all other parameters remaining the same, a condition which is difficult to achieve in an operating furnace.

Labrador City is some 912 air kilometers northeast of Montreal, and 417 ratl kilometers north of Sept-Iles, Quebec.Over 2,800 employees work at the Carol Project to produce some 20.0 million tonnes of concentrate and 10.5 million tonnes of pellets annually.In 1979 our Training Department started to develop the DACUM System of training for our Concentrator Operations Department.DACUM is an individualized, self-learning, training program. It is both a curriculum plan and an evaluation instrument.To date, the DACUM System has been completed for all occupations in the concentrator and work will commence shortly to develop DACUM for our Pellet Plant and Mine Operations Departments."

Introduction The Energy Metals Corporation (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin including the JAB Property, one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope Uranium Project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report has been completed for the JAB property. This report estimates total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 3,555,022 pounds U3O8 contained in 2,400,875 tons at an average grade of 0.073 % U3O8 at a .25 GT cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB Property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42o 14’ North and Longitude 108o 00’ West (Figure 1, Location Map). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming State mineral leases comprising approximately 2,100 acres.

Load testing is important for controlling the quality of piled foundations. The Statnamic test is an alternative to existing testing methods with a load duration that lies between that for static and dynamic tests. Current methods of analysis offer excellent correlation between static and Statnamic tests for coarse-grained soils but often over-predict the capacity for fine-grained soils. Thus a calibration chamber is being used to produce instrumented beds of clay with reproducible properties. A model pile placed in the beds can be loaded at varying rates using a computer controlled servo-hydraulic system. Results from the modelling will be used to improve methods of analysis and govern the design of a full-scale study. Initial results suggest the rate effect can be represented by a power law relating pile velocity and resistance. Statnamic loading of the model pile produced large negative pore pressures in the clay bed.

Long-range projection of demand for domestic crude oil indicates a continued upward movement and accentuates the need for increasing the recovery from known crude-oil resources to supplement expected future discoveries. Consequently, the industry and Government have given special attention to the viscous or heavy-oil deposits because they offer the distinct possibility of large order increases in ultimate recovery. This report presents data pertaining to 150 heavy-oil reservoirs in Arkansas including oil characteristics of samples from 38 of these reservoirs. To January 1, 1967, about 600 million bbl of heavy oil has been recovered from the 150 reservoirs in 63 oilfields; however, about 4.5 billion bbl, or 88 pct, of oil remained in the ground. Of prime importance is that much of this heavy-oil resource is in reservoirs having characteristics considered favorable for thermal-recovery operations. Data for the thermal projects initiated [thus Ear are presented in individual field discussions. Also discussed is the t crude oil supply-demand situation in the State.

The technical development of the niobium-bearing products is to a great extent influenced by the striving of the respective industries to maintain or strengthen their positions in all fields of application against competing materials. South East Asia, China, Eastern Europe and CIS are slowly becoming significant consumers of ferroniobium. As a result, the world niobium market has been stable despite the slowdown in steel production in 2001. This paper will describe present producers, capacities and the current market conditions.

Employee safety and health is of paramount importance for SME and its members. Many SME members work daily in our Nation's mines or have a direct impact on others that work in the mines. SME supports the mission and purpose of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), which is to prevent all injuries and disease from mining and to promote safe and healthful workplaces for the Nation's miners. SME supports the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and university research geared toward prevention of all occupational injuries and illnesses. SME maintains that laws and regulations governing the mining industry need to be based on sound scientific principles to ensure that workplace solutions can be readily implemented and that solutions to safety and health problems are fully realized.

The Harris No. 1 Mine, located in Boone County, WV, has been longwalling the Eagle Coalbed for over 30 years. Harris has experienced numerous interactions associated with the extensive room-and-pillar and longwall mining operations which have been conducted in the overlying No. 2 Gas Coalbed. The problems have included roof falls, excessive rib sloughage, and gateroad and bleeder entry closure. A detailed evaluation of the multiple seam experiences at Harris No. 1 Mine was conducted as part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) nation-wide multiple seam mining case history data base. One observation from the Harris gateroad case histories was that smaller, critically loaded, upper seam pillars seemed to cause more severe ground conditions than did wider pillars. The LaModel program was used to investigate this supposition, and the results confirmed that "critical" sized pillars do transmit the highest amounts of stress to adjacent seams. In addition, the data suggest that the probability of a major multiple seam mining interaction increases when the depth of cover is 1,000 ft or greater and when the Eagle seam pillars have a Analysis of Longwall Pillar stability factor less than 1.50.
