Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels. The predictive program was initiated on the P&H Model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

"The recovery of gold by leaching is influenced by the size of the gold carrier particles and the chemical environment. Using the relationships between the leaching rate, infinite recovery and particle size for a given set of chemical conditions, it is possible to simulate gold recovery for various feed size distributions. However the use of these particle size relationships is only valid if the leaching of gold from a given size class is independent of the production history of this size class. For instance, to use these relationships it is necessary to verify that gold recovery from the leaching of the 200-270 mesh size class remains the same if the size fraction is taken from a coarse or finely ground ore sample. Several laboratory tests were carried out to answer that question. Results of the tests show that within the large error margin associated to gold content measurements, the history of the production of a size class does not affect the gold leaching from that size class. Emphasis of the discussion is put on the difficulty associated with the processing of data containing significant measurement errors as it is the case for gold assays of leaching tests.INTRODUCTIONMore than 75% of the gold produced in the world is extracted by cyanide leaching of gold ores. The ore is ground to expose the gold carriers and the ground material is reacted in an oxygenated cyanide solution that dissolves gold, leaving solids gangue minerals that are disposed to tailings ponds or returned in underground mines as paste fill. The gold contained in the solution is recovered by either the carbon in pulp process or by cementation onto zinc powder, before being melted and casted into a brick (Marsden and House, 2006)."

TRANSVERSE rupture tests have been commonly used in mechanical investigations of brittle materials. The specimens are simple, easy to prepare, and loading presents no difficulty. Owing to the complexity of stress distribution in bending1 one can determine stresses rigorously only for the elastic range. The bend-test results, however, are at times converted into tensile-strength data, determined as maximum fiber stress. The assumption is made that for small plastic deformations the linear stress-strain relation applies. This problem was experimentally investigated by Bach3 who tested cast iron in bending and in tension and found that the maximum fiber strength obtained in bending exceeded the experimental tensile strength by a factor depending on the geometry of the tested piece. The factor varied from 1.57 for a rectangular cross section to 2.12 for a circular cross section of the tested beam. Since this work was carried out 60 years ago, the cast iron used could be expected to have been highly brittle, thus the extent of plastic deformation prior to fracture very small. We have therefore carried out a number of tests on magnesium-modified cast iron with an average elongation of -5 pct. It was hoped that the data obtained from the tests would serve as a guideline for comparing data obtained in tension and bending for brittle materials. Mechanical properties were measured at room temperature on an Instron tensile machine at a crosshead speed of 0.05 in. per min. The three-point bend test employed cylindrical bars 0.20 in. in diameter with a 1.0-in. span. For the tensile test, cylindrical tensile specimens with a gage length of 0.85 in. and a diameter of 0.160 in. were used. Results are summarized in Table I. "Methane hydrate is of interest as an alternative energy resource in Japan and the R&D program has been ongoing for ten years (MH21: http://www.mh21japan.gr.jp/english/). Rare-earth element-rich deep-sea mud (REE Mud) is also of interest as an alternative resource in Japan and an exploration program has been launched in 2013.For methane recovery from the hydrate, a depressurization method pumps up water in a production well and has been successfully applied in field production tests (MH21: http://www.mh21japan.gr.jp/english/). However, micro-bubbles, which appear in the hydrate dissociation and water recovery processes may present an environmental issue. It may stick on clay and silt particles that accompany the recovered water, and may disturb settling of the particles in the water separation tank. For exploitation of REE Mud, an air-lift system has been proposed in the feasibility study (Abe et al., 2012). The same micro-bubble issue is expected during the air, water, and mud particle separation processes. In this research, the authors conducted a preliminary tank experiment for clarifying the effect of micro-bubbles on settling behavior of fine kaolinite particles. The behavior was continuously recorded by a still camera and the images were analyzed by the gray scale intensity. From the results the authors found a suspension effect for the settling of fine particles as the result of micro-bubbles. The effect should be studied in detail for preventing some serious environmental impacts during deep-sea mining."

This paper investigates the performance of the neural network technique in a placer deposit situated at the Nome district in Alaska. Initially a single neural network model was constructed to estimate the gold grade. However, at a later stage, an ensemble model consisting of multiple networks was also constructed via the Adaboost algorithm. The reason behind the use of the ensemble model of the Adaboost algorithm was to examine if the ensemble model provided superior performance to the single neural network. As indicated by other studies, Adaboost did not have a better performance than a single neural network in this specific application. This may be due to the high noise inherent in the gold data used in this project. Consequently R2 values of gold prediction are also poor for both the single and multiple networks.

"When performing a valuation of a mineral property, a developing mine or perhaps an ongoing operation, the appraiser is typically provided with a range of information prepared by the property owner. This information can include ownership records, geological interpretation, assay data, an estimate of the reserves or resources believed to be on site (tons and grade), mine plans, production forecasts, capital and operating cost projections, and so forth.The appraiser familiarizes himself with the data, analyzes the various reports and then prepares the appraisal. There is usually a site visit, and there may be some effort at comparison of the particular mineral deposit with others in the region or with those of similar depositional characteristics, but for the most part, the appraiser is relying on the corporate documents, tempered by his/her experience in the field. Time is usually of the essence, the cost for the assignment has been trimmed, and therefore independent verification of the various components comprising the underlying data base (legal review, redrilling portions of the deposit, collection of new samples, re-assaying, etc.) is unlikely in most situations.In the case of high-value commodities — gold, silver, diamonds, perhaps the platinum-group elements — there have been numerous examples of the property owners attempting to increase the value of their holdings by nefarious methods. Most of these involve salting the deposit in some fashion; i.e., introducing small amounts of the commodity into samples being sent to a laboratory for analysis so that the resultant assay shows a higher grade (Donaldson, 2002; Greeley, 2001; Lechler et al., 2008 and Meech, 2001). Other schemes to enhance the apparent worth of a property include the use of nonstandard assay procedures, incorrect handling or withholding of the underlying information, and false reporting."

Enclosed cabs have been used for many years to isolate workers on mobile equipment in the mining industry for health and safety reasons. These enclosed cabs create a microenvironment for workers where they can be either more protected or more vulnerable to contaminants. Over the past decade, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has performed substantial research efforts to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment. In these efforts, NIOSH has partnered with mining companies, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and manufacturers of filtrations and pressurizations systems in a synergistic effort to reduce respirable dust and improve the air quality inside these enclosed cabs. Various field studies over this time have shown an array of results ranging from very minor to very significant reductions (protection factor: 3 ? 89) in respirable dust levels inside these enclosed cabs. In addition to and concurrent to the field work, NIOSH also performed a comprehensive laboratory study to evaluate all the factors involved in cab filtration and pressurization systems and identified those factors that were most significant for an effective system. From this comprehensive research effort, the key components for an effective filtration and pressurization system have been identified in an effort to provide the best air quality, thus minimizing the respirable dust exposure, to equipment operators inside of enclosed cabs of mobile mining equipment.

Energy consumption and wear of grinding media and liners are the major cost factors in milling plants. Since the beginning of the last century, much effort has been directed at the prediction of the power draw as affected by the mill operating conditions. This paper explores the prediction of the liner wear using the discrete element method (DEM). A mathematical model taking into account adhesion, abrasion and impact wear which occur in dry mills is derived in order to predict the loss of material on liners. The mathematical model is implemented in the DEM code using an objective function in order to produce realistic simulated profiles. "INTRODUCTIONCominco Limited, one of the free world's largest producers of lead and zinc having majority ownership in Pine Point Mines Ltd., operates a mining and concentrating complex on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. The mine was developed in 1963-64 and commenced operation late in 1964 with the direct shipping of high grade ore. The concentrator started production in November 1965 at a design throughput rate of 5,000 T.P.D.In 1968, the Company acquired the mining rights to a large ore body located to the east of the Pine Point claims and subsequently an expansion program at the concentrator raised the throughput rate to 8,000 T.P.D. The expansion included a third grinding circuit and additional flotation capacity. The flotation capacity took the form of a completely separate circuit from the existing flotation plant. In 1972, the zinc flotation circuits were modified to include two additional stages of cleaning. This change concluded the ""Pre-Consolidation Flotation"" circuit at Pine Point.In considering these modernization programs of the flotation section of the concentrator, the philosophy was to utilize the largest available machine having proven and modern technological changes. With the advent of the large capacity machines available in the late 1970's, it was considered a suitable time to revamp the entire flotation circuit at Pine Point in 1979. The Circuit Consolidation Project was developed to meet this requirement."

Changes in reductant and energy inputs which are required to adjust the slag composition in anilmenite smelter to a higher or lower FeO content are calculated. The calculated changes are based on the assumption that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining constrains the slag composition to follow a eutectic groove in the TiO2-FeO-TiO1.5phase diagram. Calculated equilibrium conditions along the eutectic groove are presented, and form the basis of the calculations. The inputs of energy and carbon need to deviate strongly from the steady-state values to adjust the slag composition. The inputs required at any given time depend on the desired rate of change of the slag composition, and the current slag composition. The steady-state relationship of a change in energy input of 5 kWh corresponding to a 1 kg change in carbon input does also hold for the changed inputs during transient changes in FeO content. U.S. Borax’s mine in California’s Mojave Desert is the source of nearly half the world’s supply of refined borates. These minerals are used in hundreds of products, including essential plant nutrients that increase crop yield and quality, and safe building products that protect homes from insects and the elements. Borax’s workforce is also safe. In fact, it is among the safest in the nation. In 2003, the company was recognized by the U.S. Mine, Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for achieving the best safety record among large U.S. mining operations. It was also recognized by its parent company, Rio Tinto, for achieving the best record among its nearly 80 worldwide mining operations. Borax’s safety performance is five times better than the national average. And its workforce recently achieved more than two million hours without a lost-time injury.

Massive pillar failures were observed at two underground coal mines. The results of stability analysis using traditional pillar design formulae did not agree with the underground observations. Finite element models were used to analyze the causes and mechanisms of the pillar failures. The results were confirmed by the underground observations. Finally, the improved mine plan for each case was derived to ensure the stability of the underground structure.

Soon New York City will have a new train station. A tunnel project is under construction to extend Line 7 to a new station that is located near the Jacob K. Javits Con-vention Center. This is also part of the Hudson Yards redevelopment project that is intended to aid redevelop-ment of the west side of Midtown Manhattan around the Long Island Railroad?s Caemmerer Railyard. The station, or ?cavern? as it?s called by those excavating it, will be the portal for that growth. In the city, public transportation means high-rise residential proper-ties will have better access to the business district, and those outside the area will have greater access to event facilities ? two factors that are critical for development investment.

Prolonged, extensive exposure to hand-transmitted vibration could cause a series of vibration-induced disorders in the vascular, sensorineural, and musculoskeletal structures of the human hand-arm system, which have been collectively called hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 To assess the risk of HAVS the international standard ISO 5349-1 (2001)1 recommends using the root-mean-square (rms) acceleration of the measured vibration with a frequency weighting. While a few epidemiological studies have reported results consistent with the predictions made according to the recommendation, many other studies have reported results with large discrepancies.2 This may be partially attributed to the time-averaging effect involved in calculation of the frequency components, especially for impact type tools. Because the spectral characteristics of impact tools change dramatically with time, a time-frequency (T-F) analysis can provide better characterizations of such highly transient vibrations. The analytic wavelet transform (AWT) is an ideal T-F analysis tool because it possesses the advantages of both the Fourier transform and the wavelet transform.3 The objective of this study was to explore the application of the AWT method for characterizing the impact tool vibrations and assessing their exposure risk. Methods Five tools (two chipping hammers, two riveting hammers, and one concrete cutting saw) were used in this study. The saw vibration was measured when it was used to cut a section of road pavement during a repair. The vibrations on the other tools were measured by the procedure specified in ISO 8662-2 (1992).4 A sampling rate of 16,386 Hz was used in the measurement. The AWT and Fourier analysis were applied to these signals and to identify their characteristics. Results Figure 1 compares the T-F characteristics of the accelerations measured from the relatively steady concrete saw and a riveting hammer. The frequency weighting specified in ISO 5349-11 was applied in the calculations. The comparison clearly shows that the two tools have completely different T-F characteristics.

This paper presents and discusses some of the computer models developed and currently used at the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). These include the performance models for full and partial face machines. Examples of input and output of these models will be illustrated for typical mining operations by using machines such as Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), Continuous Miners (CM), Marietta borer miners and longwall drum shearers. The general approach to modeling and the available models are discussed and some examples of these models are presented. The comparison between the estimated and achieved performance, as well as the degree of improvement in the performance due to balancing and modification in cutterhead design are also discussed.

In longwall mining, premining prediction of methane emission rate depends on a number of geological factors, geographical factors, and operational factors. These same factors also can impact the selection of a specific degasification system. This study proposes a principle component analysis (PCA) and artificial neural network (ANN) approach to predict the ventilation methane emission rates of U.S. longwall mines and the optimum combination of degasification boreholes based on the given characteristics of the mine. Artificial neural networks, more than conventional computer models, are adaptable systems that can solve problems such as non-polynomial or very complex relationships that are difficult to describe mathematically. Data on ventilation emissions and degasification system design were obtained from 63 longwall mines in 10 states and were combined with corresponding geological, geographical, and operational parameters for the period 1985-2005. PCA was used to determine the variables that most influence ventilation emissions and degasification system design. Different combinations of variables in the data set and network structures were used for network training, cross-validation, and testing. The resultant ANN models predicted ventilation methane emissions with a 90-95% accuracy and were superior to multi-linear and second order non-linear models. The ANN-based expert classification system was able to classify the design of the degasification system (no degasification, gob vent borehole, horizontal and gob vent borehole, and horizontal, vertical and gob vent borehole) with more than 80% accuracy. The models can be used as prediction and decision tools for the ventilation emissions and degasification system selection for specific site and mine-design conditions.

In England, the provision of aggregate is determined by the historical relationship between construction and aggregate consumption. This approach does not necessarily lead to sustainable decision-making and can be seen as being driven by political expediency, rather than reasonable environmental consideration. The introduction of the statutory requirement for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) in the UK has provided the opportunity to examine this issue on a more rational basis. This paper provides a practical application of a SEA based approach, to the provision of aggregates at a regional level. The process, underpinned by relevant information on resources and environmental assets, suggests that alternative supply scenarios for aggregate provision are tested in a transparent, consistent manner with increased genuine stakeholder consultation. It supports a move away from "predict and provide" approaches to one where aggregates are sourced with the best balance of environmental costs and benefits.

Sequential grid mining has been employed as the primary mining strategy at the AngloGold West Wits Elandsrand Mine since the inception of stoping operations from the sub-vertical shaft system in 1988. Little has been published on sequential grid mining as a mining strategy since, and the purpose of this paper is to describe sequential grid mining, its history, its implementation at Elandsrand, and the outcome to date. The results obtained using sequential grid mining have been evaluated from seismic data, productivity statistics, and rock related accident statistics. Comparisons with neighbouring mines namely Western Deep Levels and Deelkraal, have been made to substantiate the improved conditions observed at Elandsrand, and to compare sequential grid mining directly with longwall mining in similar conditions and at similar depths. Sequential grid mMining is shown to be cost-effective, more flexible, and safer than long wall mining in similar conditions, at least on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef in the western part of the Carletonville Goldfield. More work is necessary to establish it as the favoured mining strategy at depths exceeding 3000 metres, and for reefs other than the Ventersdorp Contact Reef.
