The oxidation of structural materials at high temperatures in gas-cooled systems can be greatly retarded by the addition of small amounts of hydrogen to the inert coolant. In experimental equipment for gasifying coal with heat transferred by helium, the oxidation of graphite and metals (molybdenum, tungsten, and certain stainless steels) by trace impurities in the coolant helium was virtually eliminated by adding 0.1 to 1.0 percent hydrogen. The reaction of hydrogen with praphite does not preclude its use to retard oxidation; at 2,400° F. only 0.2 pound of graphite per square foot per year is lost for each percent of hydrogen in the helium. The addition of hydrogen appeared to prevent the mass transfer of carbon often associated with oxidation of graphite, without causing noticeable embrittlement of stainless steels and molybdenum or other damaging effects. This method has been tested in precision gas-recycle systems and applied successfully for more than a year in a pilot-scale unit operating at 250 pounds per square inch gage and 2,400° F. It is now used routinely and can be applied to many gas-cooled systems operating at high temperatures.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 475 natural gas samples from 17 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 454 samples were collected during calendar year 1971. The remaining 21 samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the analyses were not received until 1971. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Thirteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,427 gas analyses prior to 1971. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale experiments to determine whether or not surface waters with a high organic content could be purified sufficiently to be used to replace the natural high-quality deep well water currently being used in the silica flotation step of phosphate rock beneficiation. Waters abundant in organic matter were collected from two central Florida streams, flocculated with a cationic polyethylenimine polymer, and processed in a sand filter. This treatment removed most of the organic materials from the water. Untreated surface water, treated surface water, and distilled water were used to compare the flotation response of the acid insolubles in an amine flotation circuit. Surface water treated with PEI-1000 was shown to be as effective as distilled water for the acid-insoluble-flotation step. Flocculation and filtration can therefore produce water suitable for amine flotation of quartz, which would permit substitution of surface water for deep well water.

Ultrasonic ranging sensors are inexpensive, have no moving parts, have no lenses to clean, are normally small and unobtrusive, and can measure distances through moderate amounts of dust, smoke, and humidity, so they are well suited to underground mines. In the work reported here, conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, researchers tested ultrasonic ranging sensors for their abiity to define rib line features for computer-aided navigation of underground mine mobile equipment. The investigation began with laboratory tests of field of view, angle of incidence, intersensor variation, and ranging accuracy of the individual rangers in a ring array produced by Denning Robotics of Wilmington, MA. The results showed that the sensors have good accuracy and low variability. Additional experiments at AMAX's Henderson Mine showed the sensors could accurately and reliably measure the distance to mine features, including convex and concave corners and rib intersections. The results showed that when used properly, the ranger data are accurate enough for reliable mine vehicle navigation When used incorrectly, ultrasonic rangers do not provide the anticipated data. Therefore, this report explains the principles of ultrasonic range measurement, describes the ranger's strengths and weaknesses, and explains proper ranger use and data analysis.

Continuing a program of thermochemical investigation of compounds of to ferroalloy elements, this paper contains ins values of the heats of formation of two sodium molybdates (Na2Mo04 and Na2Mo207) and three sodium tungstates (NO2W4, Na2W207, and NA2W207, and Na2W4013). The experimental method was solution calorimetry. The solution medium was sodium hydroxide solution, except that hydrofluoric acid solution was used for sodium tetratungstate. The heat of formation values are given with reference both to the constit¬uent elements and to the constituent oxides. These data are of prime impor¬tance in the thermodynamic consideration of these substances, as their accumulation includes the most difficult and time-consuming steps toward evaluating the free energies of formation and thus the potential reactivities and thermal stabilities. Except for values for sodium monomolybdate and monotungstate, no previous similar data were contained in literature sources.

Data obtained from a copper mine were used in a comparative study of the reserve estimates generated by applying geostatistical methods to surface borehole data, underground core drilling results and assay values from chip sampling. Global estimation of the deposit performed by kriging of the low-density sampling data from the surface boreholes did not provide reliable results, but could identify the potentially mineralised zones. The reserve generated from core drilling results correlated well with that estimated from chip sample data and with that estimated by the conventional methods used at the mine. A satisfactory reserve evaluation could, therefore, be obtained by kriging of the data from the underground core drilling alone, provided that a systematic sampling procedure was adopted. Estimates based on chip sampling information could be used as a check, which could avoid the current practice of chip sampling of most of the mine workings. The aim should be to develop a semi-variogram for the deposit, which could be used to estimate the reserves by kriging

Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

Portable communications equipment is becoming increasingly important in underground mining. Proper selection of microphones and hearing devices to be part of these communication systems is essential if the messages are to be transmitted intelligibly. In this program a thorough study of the requirements for these transducers was made with respect to intelligibility, mechanical configuration, human factors and safety. A computer analysis was made to predict how several combinations of transducers would perform at typical mining noise levels. A survey has been made of those microphones and hearing devices on the market today that might be applicable to the miner communication system. Several systems are proposed and evaluated.

Existen tres métodos para la determinación cuantitativa de cuarzo: El método químico, el de difracción de rayos X y el petrográfico. El método que presenta mejores beneficios es el de N. A. Talvitie, puesto que se basa en la propiedad del ácido fosfórico, donde se forma complejos solubles en agua con los silicatos y óxidos metálicos, quedando el cuarzo prácticamente inalterado.

The behaviour of iron ores and fluxes in the high temperature zone of a sintering bed is extremely complex. Following a review of current knowledge, an attempt is made to define relevant terminology to describe the processes that occur in this part of the bed. A deformation temperature is used to quantify the initial formation of melt, which is produced predominantly by reactions between fine particles in the sinter mix. The subsequent assimilation of larger particles is considered to depend on the reactivity of the melt and the assimilation resistance of these particles. Novel laboratory experimental techniques are used to quantify these parameters. Results demonstrate that the properties of the raw materials used have an extremely important influence on the initial processes of melt formation and assimilation and also on the nature of the sintering reactions and sinter-bonding phases.

In deposits of the John Muir Wilderness, tungsten is the principal metallic element. Gold, silver, copper, and molybdenum could be recovered as by-products from most of the tungsten deposits. More than 1 million tons (0.9 million t) of tungsten resources are estimated to be along the fringes of metasedimentary roof pendants. Gold-silver deposits and silver-copper-lead-zinc deposits with small resources are found at several localities. The association of metal deposits with the intrusive-metasedimentary rock contacts and the widespread existence of these contacts, suggests additional resources exist. The area has no known potential for coal, oil, gas, or geothermal energy.

The belt conveyor is one of the major pieces of equipment for transferring bulk material in mining operations. However, considerable amount of respirable dust may be generated whenever the bulk material is loaded, dumped, or transferred. This report identifies and evaluates various dust control technolgies applicable to belt conveyors, and describes how an integrated systems approach can reduce dust emissions at a transfer point. Phase I of the program consisted of literature search and a critical evaluation of various dust control technologies. The work established that a comprehensive approach to calculating exhaust volumes for dust collection system does not exist. The parameters that affect the wet dust suppression efficiency were also reviewed. Based on the Phase I work, bulk material handling system and dry dust collection or wet dust suppression systems were designed and installed at a number of transfer points in a limestone processing facility, a surface mine selected as a field test site. Field test data were used to determine the validity of various exhaust volume calculations at the different transfer points. The field test data also formed the basis for the evaluations of the relative effectiveness of commercially available and wet dust suppression systems in controlling respirable dust emissions.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Mongolia is known in western countries as the location of rich dinosaur fossil fields. However, the country is even richer in mineral resources. The Ministry of Industry and Trade reports 6,000 mineral occurrences of 80 metals and minerals. Mongolia has already attracted much foreign investment in the mining sector. Mining is the country’s largest industry. It is responsible for 17 percent of the gross domestic product, 65 percent of industrial output and 57 percent of export earnings.

A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t Au, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5- 40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects. Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26 per cent of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77 per cent. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88 per cent, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au. Re-cyanidation of some of the dried tailings from the initial tests extracted most of the remaining gold giving a tailing assaying 0.5 g/t Au. This indicated that most of the gold was available for dissolution by cyanide. The poor dissolution of gold by cyanidation of the untreated concentrate was attributed to the presence of flotation reagents. It was shown by UV spectrometry that xanthate-containing compounds were present in the solids fraction of the original pulp and that they were partly removed by pre-treatment. MIBC was also present, and dithiophosphate, which was used in the flotation step, was also probably present. The results indicated that the improvement in gold extraction after filtration and oxidation of the original pulp was due to partial removal of the flotation reagents, and illustrates the detrimental effects that residual flotation reagents can have on the extraction of gold by cyanidation of a flotation concentration.

Currently, underground mining of deeper massive deposits with lower grades, harder rock conditions in high strength environments, entails difficulties in caving, fragmentation and seismicity of the orebody.So far, the use of preconditioning (PC) with hydraulic fracturing (HF) has shown positive results in terms of seismic response and caving performance, while PC combined with explosives aims to weaken the rock mass, causing an additional effect on fragmentation.In particular, mines commonly referred to as ‘supercaves’, operated by caving methods, have the need to integrate mine to plant processes, where rock fragmentation appears as a key tool. In fact, it implies making mining and comminution processes more efficient to the plant and for mines, it justifies the search of innovative solutions in drilling and blasting techniques to precondition the rock mass. The following paper aims to show the feasibility of numerical blast modelling to weaken the rock mass using explosives, mainly through sensitivity analysis applied to designs to minimise bias and uncertainty in the results. It is shown how the presence of structures, their geometry and in situ stresses influence or interfere with the PC method being used.From the work, it is concluded that better knowledge on the application of explosives weakening allows specialists to strengthen numerical models associated with every design and therefore previously validate their applicability, helping to understand complex phenomena such as the propagation of mechanical waves in non-elastic heterogeneous media. In this sense, it is understood that while there are studies (Sanchidrián, Segarra and López, 2006) showing that the transfer of energy in the rock mass could be even greater in a confined environment, the more competent rock mass and higher in situ stresses interfere mostly on the effectiveness of a technique using explosives.CITATION:Gottreux, I, Córdova, E, González, P and Videla, J, 2016. Many of the gases and vapors used in anesthesia form explosive mixtures with oxygen or air. Sources of ignition for these mixtures always have existed, in operating and anesthetizing areas. When ether was first introduced, candles and gas-lights and coal stoves caused fires and mild explosions of the vapor-air mixtures. Today the chief causes of ignition are electrical. Fires and explosions are still much too frequent; and, because many of the mixtures are rich in oxygen, the explosions sometimes are very violent. Obvious sources of ignition, such as electric-power sparks and arcs in open motors, switches, and receptacles, as well as exposed incandescent wires and hot plates, usually are recognized by hospital personnel and corrected. A source of ignition that is not so obvious to many is static electricity. Until quite recently the presence of this hazard in a large majority of anesthetizing areas was not even suspected. However, numerous explosions -many of them fatal to patients -have been attributed, with good reason, to sparks from static electricity. In this paper the authors present facts to show the prevalence of static electricity in the average hospital anesthetizing area, and the degree to which this easily developed electrical form of energy constitutes an explosion hazard. An effort is made throughout to explain how static electricity behaves, why it is a hazard, and why certain safety measures are needed and recommended. Following the introduction and a short general discussion of static electricity, which incorporates a glossary of pertinent electrical terms, an account is given of inspections and tests made in a number of hospitals. This account includes many suggestions that should be useful to any person who plans to make similar inspections and tests. However, a comparison of materials and equipment used with those described in the report will reveal, in many cases, the potential dangers and obviate the necessity for tests. The hospital work was supplemented by considerable laboratory research designed to determine the spark energies required to ignite anesthetic-gas mixtures and the exact amount of time involved in developing the usual static charges. The results of this research are reported and the implications examined. The paper concludes with a general discussion of static and related hazards in anesthetizing areas and of the most urgent preventative measures.

The Sugarloaf RARE II area (No. 5296) covers 11,100 acres in the northern part of the White Mountain Range, in the Inyo fictional Forrest. It is in Nevada, about 45 mi north of Bishop, California. A mineral survey was conducted by On U.S. burro of Mines in 1982 and by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1980-1982. The Bureau reviewed pertinent literature, searched Esmeralda and Mineral County mining records, obtained current claim information from the administrative agencies, and contacted claim owners. Thirty-six properties were examined, and 674 samples were taken from them to help assess win oral resources and potential. The Geological Survey evaluated the regional mineral potential by geologic, geochemical, and Geophysical surveys.

This report presents the results of a search for viable-self-drilling roof bolt concepts, detailed development, design, and manufacture of such bolts that drill their own holes, and testing in the laboratory and in the field in two different coal mines of three self-drilling roof bolts. Three new types of bolts were designed and tested, which drill their own holes and then anchor in continuous operation. These were a spring-actuated mechanical expansion shell, a slot and wedge, and a self-contained resin anchor bolt. Such bolts when fully developed for mine use would allow safer and remote installation of ground support and increase productivity. Recommendations are given for further work to improve drilling and anchorage performance.
