As a part of its overall wealth in fuel resources, the United States possesses large reserves of coal of ignite rank. According to recent estimates of the Federal Geological Survey (3, 5),l/ the assured lignite reserves of this country amount in total to over 463 billion tons, equivalent to 24 percent of our total national coal reserve on a tonnage basis and 15 percent on a heating-value basis. Distribution and relative amounts of United States coal and lignite reserves are indicated in figure 1. By far the largest proportion of our lignite reserves, over 95 percent is found in North Central States, principally in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana, in the vast coal-bearing structural grouping designated as the Fort Union formation. Of the remaining United States reserves, all but a fraction of 1 percent are found in a series of relatively scattered deposits in Texas.

The Nokomai Gold Mining Project commenced production in January 1992. The Project continues a history of mining in theNokomai Valley which extended from 1863 to 1942. L & M Mining Limited have held interests in the valley since 1980. In 1990 the Nokomai Joint Venture was formed with the Hore family, the owners of Nokomai Station, to mine a large alluvial gold resource in the valley. The mine is located adjacent to the Mataura Brown Trout fishery and required extensive environmental studies prior to granting of permits. The mine is budgeted to work for 20 months, processing 460 000 m3 of wash material. During this period, contract miners, Downer Mining Limited, will move in excess of seven million cubic metres of overburden from the deposit.

The leaching and reduction of Cr(VI) in soils contaminated by chromium-containing slag were investigated with column experiments. The results showed that Cr(VI) concentration in leachate decreased from 988 mg L-1 to 407 mg L-1 after 7 days when water was used as leaching agent. However, Cr(VI) in leachate in culture medium treatment was not detected at above periods. In comparison, Cr(VI) concentration in leachate from autoclaved soil remained 398 mg L-1 at the end of experiment. The results indicated that the indigenous microorganism was capable of reducing Cr(VI). The amount of Cr(VI) reduction was 335 mg at the whole experiment period and the reduction rate was 67.09 mg d-1. Carbon supply showed minor effect on Cr(VI) reduction. However the reduction capability of Cr(VI) could be improved by combination of the carbon and the nitrogen. The optimal quantity was 5 g L-1 of yeast extract and 4 g L-1 of glucose.

"In regular CIL circuits, activated carbon is used for two purposes: avoiding solid/liquid separation after cyanide leaching, and minimizing gold losses in the tails. The carbon distribution and gold profiles in the successive CIL stages are operating variables, not objectives. When the CIL feed contains a preg robbing constituent however, such as native carbon, there will be competition for gold cyanide and this conflicts with minimizing of losses of gold to CIL tails. This paper examines some of the limitations of activated carbon in CIL circuits handling preg robbing Carlin Trend ores.INTRODUCTION Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) has been a great success treating regular gold ores, but the technology is still challenged by preg robbing feedstocks. Little information is available in the gold milling literature on CIL gold extraction from “free” milling gold ores which are preg robbing, or on autoclave discharge (POX’ed) slurries of double refractory ores. Neither feedstock is readily available for experimentation. No literature reference could be found describing deliberate modifications to CIL operations or CIL circuits due to the presence of two types of carbon: “native” and activated. There is some literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of native carbons (Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001). Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices (Tretbar, Arehart & Graves). In this paper, the term “native” carbon indicates (severely) preg robbing carbonaceous materials found in gold ores. There is considerable literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of man-made “activated carbons”. Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices. These tests are comparative, i.e. results relate to a standard carbon and depend on the test methodology and carbon history. The test results are equilibrium oriented, hence of limited value to CIL circuit designers or plant operators handling preg robbing solids; in CIL circuits most carbons are not loaded to capacity. Information on gold cyanide adsorption and desorption kinetics might be more relevant and that is one subject explored in this paper."

"To prevent the propagation of mine explosions, the Bureau of Mines recommends:1. That all coal and lignite mines, except anthracite mines shall be rock dusted.2. That rock dust shall be distributed upon top, bottom, and sides of all underground openings of every description, to within. at least 4o feet of all working faces and the areas not rock dusted shall be kept wet.3. That the rock dust shall be maintained in, such quantity that the incombustible material in representative samples of dust collected shall not be less than 65 percent. Where methane gas is present in the ventilating current, the minimum percentage of incombustible matter in the mine dust shall be increased 1 percent for each 0.1 percent of methane.4. That when the rock dust in any area becomes caked so thatit cannot be dispersed readily as a cloud in the air, that part of the mine shall be redusted immediately.5. That the dust to be used shall not contain more than 5 percent of combustible matter nor. more than 25 percent of quartz or free silica; all of the dust shall pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and 60 percent or more shall pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch; the dust shall not absorb moisture from the air to such an extent as to cake and destroy its effectiveness as a dry dust.6. That rock-dust barriers shall not be regarded as a substitute for generalized rock dusting.Research and experience have shown that maintenance of an adequate percentage of rock dust in all underground openings, whether gassy or not, of bituminous and subbituminous coal and lignite mines (anthracite dust does not propagate explosions) is the best means of preventing coal dust explosions. In rare instances where all fine coal particles on the floor, ribs, roof, and timbers are in a muddy condition continuously rock dusting is unnecessary.The term ""underground openings"" refers to all unsealed openings whether they contain track or not, and includes rooms, entries, crosscuts, breakthroughs, rock tunnels, slopes, haulageways, airways, and travelingways. The sealing of unused or abandoned parts of a mine in accordance with Mine Safety Board Decision avoids the necessity of rock-dusting the sealed-off openings.The kind of rock dust to be used should have the approval of the State Mine Inspection Service. Pure limestone or pare dolomite produces the best rock dust, as these dusts have low silica content, little tendency to cake, and a light color that aids illumination. To reduce tendency to cake it is preferable that not more than 75 percent of the dust pass the 200-mesh sieve. All sieve sizes are those of the Tyler screen scale. If the mine personnel is repeatedly exposed to breathing high concentrations of the dust, the percentage of free and combined silica should be as low as possible, preferably less than 5 percent. Persons engaged in the application of rock dust should wear approved dust respirators as listed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7030 or revisions thereof."

The objectives of the research were to determine whether a model health and safety program could be defined in terms which would enable its application to mines of all types, and, if such a model program could be defined to determine through evaluations in two mining companies whether it would achieve measurable improvements. This volume describes the model, how it was applied in the field, and how it was evaluated. Anecdotal data to illustrate common kinds of safety problems and their solutions are included. The literature and field research that preceded the model definition is discussed in Vol. 2, which covers the period of September, 1980 to September, 1981.

Electrochemical Behaviour of Massive Chaclopyrite Bioleached Electrodes in Presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus In this work, the monitoring of bacterial and chemical dissolution of massive chaclopyrite was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV); the mineral surface was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the elements were examined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). The electrolyte employed for the electrochemical tests was the medium used to bioleaching the electrodes (3.0 g/L (NH4)2+SO4, 0.5 g/L K2HPO4, 0.5 g/L MgSO4+7H2O and 0.1 g/L Ca(NO3)2).The results showed differences in voltagramms carried out by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus: In bioleached electrodes tested in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, the anodic and cathodic current signals were larger than with Acidithiobacillus caldus. The analysis of CV results allowed attributing the different peaks observed in both the direct and reverse potential scanning to the oxidation of chaclopyrite to a secondary copper mineral (bornite, chalcocite and covellite) and its reduction via different non stoichiometric copper sulphides intermediaries. Surface evidences were observed by SEM, and chemical elements evidences were also investigated by EDAX.

A bench-scale evaluation of coal and coal waste materials as aggregate materials for use in longwall mine supports was undertaken as part of the Bureau of Mines Health and Safety program on ground control. Performance data were obtained on portland cement concretes (PCC) prepared with coal and coal wastes as aggregate materials. The effects of high-early-strength accelerators on strength and creep and of superplasticizers on strength properties of PCC formulated with coal and coal waste were investigated. Concrete formulated with a high-early-strength accelerator and coal and coal waste has 20 and 40 pet greater compressive strength, respectively, than the control samples without admixture. A concrete formulated with coal waste and the high-early-strength accelerator, using four bags of cement per cubic yard and a water-cement ratio of 1.0, had the lowest creep value of all the coal- and coal-waste-formulated PCC's tested.

A leaching model for gold ore that takes into account the impact of cyanide and oxygen concentrations as well as gold surface exposure on leaching performance is developed. Cyanide consumption is estimated by an empirical model that is a function of ore particles size distribution as well as cyanide, copper and sulphur concentrations. Knowing more about an orebody makes it easier to exploit it profitably. Many orebodies are made up of different rock types, alteration zones or mineralogical ensembles: oxides versus sulphides or facies with different metallurgical properties for example. Being able to model the spatial layout of these different facies is vital to good mine planning and management. Kriging cannot be used to generate numerical models of orebodies with complex geometric patterns because it gives too smooth an image. Over-smoothing has the meaning of changing the natural selectivity. Conditional simulations are required to do this kind of model respecting the natural variability: honouring the natural selectivity, dilution and ore loss. Standard geostatistical simulations cannot duplicate many of the complex spatial relationships seen in the earth sciences, such as differently orientated facies, sets of conjugate veins or ore types where certain facies cannot touch. After a presentation of the case study, it will be shown why traditional methods for simulating indicators like the sequential indicator simulations, or the truncated gaussian method, cannot be used to simulate it. Plurigaussian simulations are then introduced and shown to be more powerful than the previous methods in their range of application. This is confirmed by the case study treated; a Chilean copper deposit, for which the plurigaussian simulations are seen to respect the different orientations of the individual facies as well as honouring the facies seen in drill holes, and respecting the proportion of each facies even if this varies in space (e.g. increases or decreases with depth). The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering® is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering® is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering® is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. Emerging results from collaborative site activities demonstrate potential for generating significant value, which can reverse the trend of declining productivity due to feed grade depletion.CITATION:Walters, S G, 2017. Nuclear gauging is used world-wide in almost every industry. From mining and ore-grading to finished product, the metallurgical industry is one of the biggest users of nuclear sensors for inventory, process control, and quality assurance. This paper will discuss the basic theory of gamma transmission gauging techniques found useful in mining, milling and metal production. Techniques to be discussed are gamma transmission for level and density. A major new technique will also be discussed. This technique is called gamma backscatter. The uniqueness of this technology, how to apply and the differences between transmission and backscatter will be accentuated.

The purpose of this report is to describe the work accomplished by Mine Safety Appliances Company under Contract No. H0110845. This contract required the design, installation and testing of a permissible mine surveillance and communication system for the USBM Bruceton experimental mine facility. While much of the design and operational detail of this system can be drawn from the instruction manuals delivered with the equipment, some of it will be repeated here in Volume I for the sake of clarity, but the principal objective will be to report on overall system and subsystem performance and to suggest design alternatives for future consideration. Details of the overall system design will be found in Volume II of this report.

The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline during 1950, and according to the Bureau of Mines annual refinery capacity survey there were 357 refineries January 1, 1951, compared with 367 a year ago. The total throughput capacity increased 267,344 barrels daily during the year to 6,963,644 barrels daily as of January 1, 1951, continuing the trend of the past several years to increase the throughput capacity of the refineries and decrease the number of plants. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1950 from 18,246 barrels daily to 19,506. The Indiana-Illinois refinery district accounted for 110,175 barrels, or 41 percent of the total crude-oil capacity increase, the Oklahoma-Kansas district, 17 percent, the California district, 14 percent, the East Coast district, 13 percent, and the Louisiana Gulf Coast district, 12 percent. Slight declines ill crude-oil capacity were reported in the Texas Inland, Texas Gulf Coast, New Mexico, And Appalachian refinery districts. The 160,100 barrels of additional crude-oil capacity that was building January 1, 1951, represents an increase of 10 percent over the year earlier figure. The only completely new refinery listed as under construct ion at the beginning of 1951 is located at Superior, Wisconsin. Other new construction involves enlargement of existing refineries. Plans for at least five additional new refineries are under consideration, and construction is expected to begin during the current year.

Charged sprays and fog have been evaluated for reducing respirable dust concen¬trations. Charged spray technology was reviewed for effectiveness, equipment and theoretical considerations. A mathematical model was developed for predicting dust reduction effects. Laboratory tests were made showing charged spray is considerably more effective at reducing dust on a unit water basis than hydraulic spray. Positive and negative sprays are equally effective. Combined polarity sprays are considerably less effective than either polarity alone. Little difference in effectiveness by dust type was observed. The charged cloud can present a spark hazard in explosive atmospheres. Due to this spark hazard from the charged droplet cloud this technique must not be used in gassy mines. Predictions were made for field test conditions but confirmation was impossible due to particles resulting from dissolved solides in the spray water. Dissolved or suspended solids in atomizing sprays can result in an increase of the respirable dust burden. Charged sprays are an available dust control technique best suited to applications where water usage must be limited and long contact time between spray and dust is possible.

Crud is a common concern in SX processes and is formed as a complex solid stabilized emulsion of aqueous and organic.1,3 Crud formation is highly dependent on the amount of solids entering the circuit and is influenced by a number of other operational factors. A common practice for crud processing is interfacial pumping, wherein crud, organic, and aqueous are pumped from the settlers for treatment and utilizes a variety of equipment. These mechanical means of crud processing are effective, however, require significant processing time and require oversight to prevent the return of contaminated organic. Cytec has developed a unique crud treatment process utilizing both chemical and mechanical means to enhance the solid/liquid separation. The use of ACORGA CB? 1000 crud busting reagent allows a rapid separation of solids from the organic phase and provides similar volume recovery to current practices. The process allows operations to return clean organic back to the plant more efficiently and may enable operations to process more crud. In addition, the organic quality of the recovered organic is higher than that recovered by typical means, which can lead to operational cost savings.
