This paper presents the art of on-stream particle size and elemental analysis used at iron ore concentrators, followed by the results and experiences from several sites.Online particle size analysis is rather common at medium- to large-sized concentrators. Online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis, however, is only used in some iron ore concentrators, while it is a routine practice in base metal concentrator plants. Online XRF analysis is applicable for process monitoring and control down to four to five per cent silica by measuring Fe assays accurately. With lower silica content, direct measurement of silica and other light elements is required. Some light element analysers that are based on the prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) method have been developed, but they have not performed up to expectations with slurry analysis. Other methods have been tried though these have not been used beyond prototype installations. Operating online light element slurry analyser installations are not common in iron ore applications.There is an economic incentive to mine lower and variable grade iron ore resources, which require concentration and removal of several impurities to produce high-quality concentrates for pellet production. Monitoring such operations by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits, and there is a need to develop a dependable slurry online analyser for Si, Al, Mg and other light elements. During the last five years there have been significant improvements in face support monitoring techniques particularly in respect of face pressure. The measurement of support loading pressures was originally conceived as a maintenance aid for the hydraulic systems but recent work has also included geological loading displays of the complete face as well as individual supports. This paper briefly examines the means of obtaining this information, together with some examples of actual face data. Also included is a summary of the benefits of such monitoring and an outline of future development work.

Economically significant gold-silver mineralization occurs in Miocene andesitic flows and tuffs at Golden Cross, eight kilometres northwest of Waihi, New Zealand. The highest grade mineralization occurs in a steeply dipping elongate zone of strong quartz veining and brecciation underlying, but contiguous with, a gently dipping tabular quartz vein stockwork containing potentially open-pittable lower grade gold-silver mineralisation. The stockwork zone is enveloped by argillic alteration and overlain by unaltered Pliocene andesites and recent tephra. Evaluation of the prospect involved underground and surface geologic mapping, rock and soil geochemistry, IP-resistivity, magnetic and gravity surveys as well as 1844 metres of reverse circulation drilling and over 30 000 metres of core drilling. The paper outlines the exploration history of the area and describes the results of the various exploration techniques used at Golden Cross.

A variação da resistência à compressão de argamassas geopoliméricas foi estudada em função da razão ativador/precursor e da molaridade da solução ativadora. As argamassas estudadas foram confeccionadas com metacaulim (precursor) ativado com solução composta por hidróxido de potássio e água destilada, e areia normal brasileira. De acordo com os resultados, a resistência aumenta com a diminuição da razão ativador/precursor e com o aumento da molaridade da solução ativadora. Além disso, os valores encontrados condizem com os presentes da literatura e com possíveis aplicações para argamassas de múltiplo uso.

This report summarizes the results of a nationwide investigation completed in 1964 to determine the nonferrous base metal ore reserves and potential sources of ore and to evaluate criteria for their ultimate exploitation. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines contacted mining company officials, reviewed reports and Government records, and where necessary made personal appraisals in arriving at the results. The estimates are presented by metals in ores in geographic regions and include some of the problems affecting the reserves and potential sources. The recoverable metal in the measured ore category and in the total ore reserves was estimated as follows: [ ] At the 1963 rate of domestic mine production these total reserves would be adequate to provide copper for 62 years, lead for 121 years, and zinc for 42 years. Data also are given for gold, silver, and other coproducts. Reserve estimates greatly exceed those of previous investigations; some prior estimates of copper reserves are included for comparison (table 23). Projections of requirements for base metals indicated the United States will need approximately 45 percent more copper in 1970 and 110 percent more by 1980 than was consumed in 1960; similar projections for lead indicate increases of 20 percent by 1970 and 45 percent by 1980; zinc projections are 40 percent more by 1970 and 90 percent by 1980. Much of the production of gold and silver is a coproduct of base metals recovery and the projected need for the precious metals exceeds all the United States can produce. Some problems of the industry are mentioned. A graphic evaluation of the economic availability of the reserve and potential sources is shown.

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry, in 1932 was 24, a decrease of 6, or 20 percent from the number killed in 1931. The decrease in the number of fatalities occurring in 1932 caused the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry to reach its lowest point in 10 years. Changing conditions in the oil industry--reduced personnel, decreased active field development, and curtailed production--have undoubtedly caused a part of this decrease, but continued accident-prevention efforts by the industry have also contributed to the reduction in the number of fatalities for 1932. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed and reported annually the fatalities in the California petroleum industry for a period of 10 years. Figure 1 shows the trend of fatal accidents during that period.

A stand-alone instrument especially designed for recording strong ground motions was used in this study to create a large data base of peak particle velocities measured on stope hangingwalls. A total number of 58 sites located in stopes mining the Carbon Leader Reef, Ventersdorp Contact Reef, Vaal Reef and Basal Reef were monitored. The peak particle velocities were measured at the surface of the excavations to identify the effect of the free surface and the fractures surrounding the underground mining. From the monitoring results obtained, the velocity criterion of 3 m/s will bean adequate value that support systems have to sustain during a rockburst in most cases. However, PPVs in excess of this criterion were recorded, and some PVDs were damaged or irretrieveable, a consequence of which was that possible extreme events were not recorded. The data recorded on the skin of the excavations were compared to the data recorded by the mine seismic networks to determine the site response, defined as the ratio of the measured peak ground velocity to the peak ground velocity inferred from the mine seismic data. The site response measured at all mines studied was found to be 9 ±3 times on average. Values of the site response did not vary significantly with seismological parameters such as peak ground velocity, hypocentral distance and source radius.

Effective solids suspension is a necessary precondition for particle collection, and solids suspension is largely dependent on the hydrodynamics of the flotation cell. This study attempted to correlate the status of the suspension of apatite particles of different sizes in a Denver laboratory flotation cell versus the impeller rotational speed (N) adopted to operate the machine. The latter variable (N) influences the impeller capacity to lift the particles from the bottom of the tank and also to disperse them throughout the volume of the vessel. Such an impeller capacity can be characterized by the critical impeller speed for the accomplishment of solids off-bottom suspension (Nz) and also by the velocity of the radial water flow discharged by the impeller (U) divided by the particle terminal settling velocity (Us). This way, the status of the suspension of apatite particles inside the flotation cell can be characterized by one of three categories: ?segregation? (N/N2 < 0.60 and Us/U > 0.08); ?suspension? (0.60 = N/N2 < 1 and 0.06 < Us/U < 0.10); and ?dragging? (N/N2 = 1 and Us/U = 0.03). The range of impeller rotational speed (N), which was able to suspend the finest particles (Dp = 90 µm), was unable to suspend the coarsest particles (Dp = 254 µm). Conversely, the high value of N (N > 1,300 rpm), which is adequate to suspend the coarsest particles, may promote the entrainment of the finest particles to the froth layer.

Approach: An inspection and repair port with a multiple start thread which provides a permissible joint has been developed and tested. How It Works: The inspection port screw thread has a large pitch, which allows the port cover to be rotated from fully closed 10 fully open, in less than one revolution. See Figure 1. When the cover is screwed back in. it be-gins engagement within one eighth turn because the screw design has eight separate threads. To prevent Its unauthorized opening, the port cover has a bolt guarded by ears which accept a padlock. Critical and strategic metals are often present in small quantities in low-grade domestic ores. When these ores are leached, the resulting solution usually contains the metals in very dilute quantities. Selective electrowinning from dilute electrolytes was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. A metal deposit containing 84 pct nickel was electrowon from the leach solution of a complex domestic ore bulk flotation concentrate originally containing approximately 2 wt-pct nickel. Key to achieving accelerated deposition rates, in the case of dilute solutions, is the rapid movement of the electrolyte through the electrowinning cell. Pure, synthetic nickel electrolytes were used to establish deposition parameters, and to optimize electrolyte velocity or mass transfer rates. Hydrodynamic and electrodeposition parameters for both the synthetic and leach electrolytes are presented and the experimental research described. Selective electrowinning appears to offer a viable alternative to physical separation methods to obtain separate metal "concentrates" from low-grade ores.

A methodology has been developed for qualitative safety hazard evaluation and quantitative reliability analysis of mine monitoring and control systems. Detailed application of these techniques were made to two commercial monitor/control systems and to a West Virginia University distributed microprocessor-based system. A controlled environmental test was conducted on a set of one of the commercial system&apos;s outstations. A software reliability evaluation methodology was also developed and applied.

One does not know which has the ultimate maximum effect. In his presentation yesterday, Alan Peers, our SHEQ leader, covered a lot of detail with the way we are managing safety at Modikwa. I have attempted to identify some of the key essentials in making the mine safe. Passion Safety is addressed with a passion that is unbelievable at times. When I get phoned because an incident has occurred and in reporting the incident, there are already action plans being put in place to prevent re-occurrences, you understand the commitment to put employees? safety first. You hear the disappointment in your subordinates? voices when they have to share the fact that an incident or accident has occurred.

Industrial minerals and rocks are those which are economically important because of desirable physical and/or chemical properties rather than metal or energy content. The evaluation of these resources for investment purposes in general follows established procedures after due consideration of well documented input data. However, in view of the sensitivity of many industrial mineral projects to specific inputs they require very careful analysis. The characteristics of the industrial minerals and the industrial minerals industry are reviewed and the significance of logistics, customer requirements, technology and marketing are discussed. Implications in relation to resources/reserves terminology are considered with phosphate rock used as an example. It is concluded that industrial mineral projects as a consequence of technology and market dependence in particular can give a high level of investment risk. The industry, however, offers most interesting and challenging employment opportunities for geologists, mineral engineers and economists.

"GENERALThe Outokumpu Company is today an important European producer of metals from its own mines: copper nickel cobalt, ferro chrome and zinc being the main products. In 1972 about 4 million tons of ore was hoisted from eleven mines.Outokumpu Oy has gained experiences on the various aspects of on line computer control since 1968. This knowledge has been combined to develop a standard computer control package for concentrator control. Before the development of computer control package was started Outokumpu Oy had three large computer control systems. The first system was at the Pyhasalmi Concentrator, thee second at the LokkolaPlant, and the installation of the third system at the Vuonos Concentrator was just started.The characteristics of general computer software packages - both control and executive ones - were thus well-known as well as the practical usage of control theory. Furthermore Outokumpu had developed the Courier analyzer which included a so-called minicomputer. This project had given experience both 1n totally self made real tire executives and in computer hardware and peripheral d=vices. The instrumentation of the Outokumpu concentrators was designed and installed traditionally by the engineers of Outokumpu themselves."

Numerous fatal/nonfatal accidents involving underground workers struck by powered machinery occur yearly, with continuous miners and roof bolters involved in the majority of these accidents. In an attempt to reduce these accidents, researchers at the the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted studies of operator interactions with the motions of continuous mining machines and roof bolter boom arms. These operators generally perform their tasks in close proximity to the equipment in confined workspaces, often employing awkward postures. Since experiments with human subjects using the actual equipment were not feasible due to safety concerns, researchers opted to conduct controlled experiments in laboratory settings. Utilizing motion capture technologies and computer simulations, the studies collected data on equipment and operator movement in a range of seam heights and working postures. This article details the results of these studies to examine operating speeds based on usage and seam height.
