"A shallow till sampling program was completed on a 1 km grid over the St . George Batholith in southern New Brunswick. The ""B"" soil horizon was analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Co, Mo, U and Sb and the heavy minerals from the ""C"" soil horizon were analyzed for W, Sn and A u. The results delineated four of five recorded W occurrences, three of four recorded Mo occurrences, all recorded Cu occurrences and one recorded Au occurrence. The results indicate that shallow till sampling in conjunction with bedrock and Quaternary mapping can inexpensively define exploration targets in terrain similar to that underlain by the St. George Batholith.A similar program was carried out in eastern Ontario involving the analysis of four separates from the till, the ""8"" soil horizon, the -50 mesh fraction, the -250 mesh and the heavy mineral fraction of the ""C"" soil horizon and humus. Also sampling was carried out near known gold occurrences at closer spacings. Regionally, anomalous results from all sample media clearly defined a large auriferous shear zone and associated splays. Over one known showing all media clearly defined the showing and a secondary zone. On the regional scale the heavy mineral fraction gave the best anomaly definition and contrast, but the -250 mesh fraction was found to be the most cost effective for defining exploration targets. For detailed surveys, humus was found to be cost-effective."

All compounds are placed on the maps according to boiling point. The accompanying text illustrates by structural formulas the several types of hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon compounds identified, presents some quantitative data, and points out the possible geochemical significance of a number of the compounds. The possibilities of the Petroleum World of the future are discussed as a function of needed research,

Structural blast vibration limits should be based on the strength of the structure, the stress induced by blasting, and a responsible factor of safety. In this paper a methodology that uses direct strain measurements to determine the stress induced by blasting is described. The methodology has been used to measure strain resulting from blasting, and establish appropriate blast vibration limits on a brick sewer tunnel, an underground mine heading, brick veneer houses, a water pipeline, and transmission tower foundations. An outline is given of the use of the methodology to establish limits for the main entry heading of an underground coal mine, and transmission tower footings. The methodology that is described has reduced uncertainty factors, and permitted the specification of higher blast vibration limits than had been previously used.

In mid-1991, the design/build contractor set to work on the Pergau HEP in a remote corner of Malaysia, armed with only a slim volume of conceptual drawings. The next five years saw roads, power lines, buildings, dams, and over 30 kilometers of tunnel constructed, followed by two years of E&M installation and commissioning. Along the way, the project overcame geothermal groundwater, faults, land disputes, monsoon rains, marauding tigers, and those most fearsome of foes, politicians and the press. This paper is a testament to the ingenuity, commitment, and persistence of the construction industry professionals who brought this massive project to fruition.

A methodology for assessment and remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) developed at the Sullivan Mine in the West Coast Region has been applied to the closed Blackball Mine, Blackball, West Coast Region. AMD from the Blackball Mine has low pH, high acidity, and elevated levels of iron, aluminium, manganese, nickel, zinc and arsenic. The AMD flows at a variable rate (36 - 101 L/s) into adjacent Ford Creek, causing an increase in acidity and trace element concentrations in the creek. To test the effectiveness of treatment with a simple limestone-based treatment system, a column leaching experiment was conducted over a nine day period. The results show effective removal of acidity, reduction in the concentrations of iron, aluminium, manganese and zinc, and production of alkalinity. To determine if this treatment method reduces the toxicity of the AMD to aquatic invertebrates, a 96 hour ecotoxicity experiment was conducted. The results show a significant decrease in mortality in the treated AMD compared to untreated. The column experiment, in conjunction with the ecotoxicity work, suggest that a passive treatment system consisting of a limestone leaching bed and an open limestone channel may be sufficient to treat the AMD from the Blackball Mine. Further work, such as large-scale treatment trials, is recommended.

"AbstractWith the increasing demand in reuse of inner city areas and the urgent need for deeper foundation pits under cramped circumstances, adjacent structures close to and high ground water level, the well-known established technologies especially with small to mid-sized dimensions are often too time consuming and occasionally not economic to install lateral support systems. The alternatives for these specific cases could be the usage of the deep mixing technology to create lateral support systems in reinforcing the deep mixing elements additionally to transfer the horizontal loads from earth – and water-pressure.With increasing demand in depth and water tightness, verticality and overlapping of single column solutions are becoming the key in execution. In addition, for some applications subsoil-conditions were not ideal for wet deep mixing technologies. The tubular soil mixing system (TSM) as a combination of mechanical mixing and support of hydraulic cutting by jet grouting can provide solutions toovercome these challenges.1. Current market conditions and trendsThe present financial crisis and the efforts not only to consolidate national budgets, but also to rescue certain banks, have not left the building industry unaffected either. Some drastic cutbacks to public budgets, along with the increasingly restrictive granting of credit for the financing of construction projects, have led to enormous over-capacities in the building sector, with purely negative impact. As a consequence of these negative developments, many companies are experiencing the pressure to restructure more quickly and to reduce costs but at the same time to keep the consequences of all activities, both externally and internally, within limits acceptable to employees, owners and finance institutions and last but not least consumers."

The interaction of flotation collectors with sulfide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulfides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidised to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidised xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulfides is discussed briefly.

"Ultramafic Ni ores present significant challenges in processing in that both recoveries and grades are not satisfactory, due to the presence of Mg silicates in large amounts. Significant quantities of xanthates and CMCs are generally used for their recovery by flotation. Additionally, given that some of these ores are processed under acidic conditions, CS2 generation due to xanthate decomposition presents some safety hazards. Technology to replace xanthate has been developed for which the safety and health issues are absent. Collector S-10294 shows significant improvements in Ni and overall S recovery at a dosing rate of one half that of xanthate. New polymeric modifiers have also been developed that help reduce the Mg content of the concentrates at very low dosages. The reagents are custom designed for use in normal or hypersaline water, and acid or alkaline conditions.INTRODUCTION The use of xanthates in sulfide mineral flotation is reported to have started as early as 1925 (Nagaraj 2005). The reagent is now ubiquitous in the mining industry, accounting for 40-50% of total collector consumption. In recent years, the development of more selective reagents has rendered xanthates largely obsolete in Cu flotation. However, xanthates continue to be sold in large amounts in the Au, PGM and Ni flotation industry, where bulk sulfide flotation is required. The low cost and easy availability is the largest driver for the use of xanthates in the minerals industry. Of particular interest to this study is the use of xanthates in the flotation of Ni sulfide ores. About 60% of the world’s annual nickel output is obtained from sulfide Ni ores (Hoatson, 2006). A strategically important category of these ores is the ultramafic hosted sulfides, such as those of Western Australia and Canada. These ores are characterized by low Ni grades (<1%), with the Ni minerals being pentlandite, violarite, millerite and mackinawite, and gangue minerals comprising an array of altered Mg silicates, mostly serpentines. The challenges associated with treating these ores are well documented (Eltham et al. 1973; Claridge et al. 1975). One challenge is that Ni recoveries from these ores are lower. This has been attributed to the increased pulp viscosity, as discussed in detail by Vasudevan et al., 2010. Additionally, Mg silicates tend to report to the concentrate in large quantities, which is problematic for two reasons: a) concentrate dilution, and b) the high melting point of Mg silicates tends accelerate wear on the refractory lining of smelters. This has been attributed to network transport to the froth phase via bubble flux and entrainment (Patra et al, 2010)."

On April 1, 1982, the Bureau of Mines and the Department of Energy entered into an Interagency Agreement to develop an enhanced computer cost model for uranium in situ leach mining. The original computer cost model contained data base information related to two regions; the Wyoming basin region and the South Texas trend area. The enhanced cost model contains additional information on San Juan Basin type deposits. This addition is significant because it expands the model&apos;s capabilites to include one of the largest uranium producing areas in the United States and developes costs related to uranium production from in situ leach mining. The data base was expanded and modified to include changes necessary for San Juan basin type deposits. These changes included, but were not limited to, state and local taxes, royalty payments, depth of deposits, drilling costs, and electrical costs. Also site visits were taken to verify many of the base case parameters. Consequently, the data base has been incorporated into the computer program and existing software was modified to provide for the additional data. Information was obtained on drilling coats and therefore the current program more accurately reflects these costs to depths of 2500 feet. This depth parameter has been expanded to include Wyoming Basin and South Texas scenarios also. Verbal communications were held with one operator in the Crownpoint, New Mexico area as well as the state regulatory agencies to help validate the expanded model. As a result of these changes, several tables have been included, summarizing changes in the new default parameters and the overall range of input parameters.

Mine seals are used in underground coal mines throughout the United States to isolate abandoned mining areas from the active mine workings. The objective of adding inert gas to a sealed mine area is to quickly reduce the oxygen concentration in the sealed area to a level that will not support combustion. In the US, this process is typically conducted from the ground surface and because surface-to-mine access is constrained by so many variables, it is very difficult to provide a source of inert gas to the place where it is needed underground. To alleviate this problem On Site Gas Systems, under a NIOSH contract, built a nitrogen (N2) generation plant that operates in the underground environment. The purpose of this work was to create a reliable in-mine mobile plant that would extract N2 gas from the mine atmosphere and use the gas to create and maintain a safe sealed mine area. The plant is based on a novel design using pressure swing adsorption technology and is sized to fit on a standard shield car or mine dolly for easy transport in and around an underground coal mine. The plant is capable of producing about 900 scf/min of N2 gas at ambient mine conditions. After an exhaustive series of laboratory tests, the plant was field tested at the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) where a portion of the mine was sealed and rendered inert. During the test, the movement of the injected gas was monitored at several underground points to observe the progress and extent of the inerting process. This paper describes the plant design and the results of the field test at the SRCM. "INTRODUCTION In a previous reports results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June,- 1929, to July, 1930, in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. Considerable time was spent in this initial investigation in developing a suitable detector for determining the range of explosibility of the gases found in manholes. About 17,000 tests have been made with the detector since the investigation was started and its utility has been verified and its accuracy checked, by having complete analyses made of such samples that showed combustibles present equal to or above 25 per cent of the lower explosive limit, and those found deficient in oxygen.The initial investigation made in 1929 and 1930 demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATI0N DURING 1931The investigation carried out during the year 1931 has been along lines similar to that conducted during 1929 and 1930. In the present investigation the Edison Electric Illuminating Cc. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., have cooperated with the Bureau of lanes. The Boston Consolidated Gas Co. serves a major part of the territory under discussion with gas, but the tests covered the Edison territory irrespective of the gam company furnishing manufactured gas. A test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and one an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., has been continuously employed during the year in the testing of games in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigation, all manhole tests were given test numbers. The test data sheets on which the information regarding the tests were recorded were prepared in triplicate, one copy going to the Edison Company, one going to the Gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh. These test data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record pf each manhole tested was immediately available. The studies previously made on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace have dealt with the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah,4 and on the smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Smelting Co.5 at Kellogg, Idaho. The International plant may be considered representative of the traditional custom smelter. The lead smelter of the future seemingly will have to treat increasingly richer lead charges. This feature was then stressed in describing the Bunker Hill plant.

"During installation of pile, a soil column is formed inside the pile. For small depths, the height of the soil column typically equals to the penetration depth (full coring state). As the penetration depth increases, the developed internal shear stresses become larger and reduce the amount of soil to penetrate. At the same time, the soil in pile at the bottom is compacted. This will continue until at a given moment, the soil column is a soil plug, and does not stop moving relative to the pile. This is because the shear stresses developed in the interior of the pile are greater than the load-bearing capacity of the ground.This paper presents the results obtained from 40 model pile tests carried out to assess the effect of soil plug on the model pile capacity. The piles are embedded in sand of different densities with different lengths of piles and types of pile-ends. The model tests are divided into two parts according to the type of end of the pipe pile used in the model pile test. The first part consists of 32 model open-ended piles with different lengths of soil plug inside the pile. The second part consists of 8 model closed-ended piles.It was concluded that open-ended pipe piles behave as a closed-ended if the soil plug formed inside piles in state partial plug or full plug. Length of soil plug depends on the type of installation and relative density. The pile load carrying capacity in dense sand is several times greater than those in medium sands especially in cases of closed ended piles or open-ended since the pipe pile can produce external and internal skin friction in addition to end bearing resistance that makes the total pile capacity close to that of closed-ended pile. Whether open-ended piles are driven or pressed in the fully coring - fully unplugged mode or in the partially plugged mode, the plug does contribute to static pile base capacity."

The regional structure of shear and deformation zones in the belt, which is recognisable in plan view on Landsat TM images, is interpreted in terms of a conjugate-shear model. Gold mineralisation is related to this framework at a variety of scales. The principal recurrent structural geometries hosting deposits at mines such as Motapa, Durban, Charliesona, Cecil, Sunace, Turk group, Queens district, How, Peter Pat, Matabele Sheba, Goodenough, Old Nic and Bushtick are associated with shear zones and folds and include conjugate systems (shears, shear intersections, kink sets), side-step systems (en echelon segmentation, duplexes, monoclinal inflections, antiform-synform couplets) and interactions of the two. Linear sections of shear zones are generally poorly mineralised. The same geometries are identifiable on all scales from local to regional, so sections of regional structural lineaments or areas within mines should be prioritised for further investigation or development on the basis of the gold-bearing geometries observed to be dominant locally

Since successful industrial lignite-burning equipment was developed in 1925, the commercial use of lignite as a fuel for power plants has increased. It has proved an entirely satisfactory fuel for generating power and can be burned efficiently by various methods.4/ Equipment to fire pulverized lignite was installed and used successfully at the Trinidad Station of the Texas Power & Light Co. as early as 1926. The lignite was predried in steam-heated grid driers before pulverizing.5/ This method of firing was used later in the Comal Station of the San Antonio Public Service Commission.6/ Both stations, however, have since been converted to use other fuels. Units for pulverizing and drying lignite are relatively new in the lignite-consuming region of North Dakota. The air which sweeps the pulverizer and transports the pulverized product to the burners is preheated to dry the lignite during pulverization. The first unit was installed in 1948 in one of the two boiler units of the Crookston Station, Otter Tail Power Co., Crookston, Minn.7/ In 1951 the 30,000-kw. W. J. Neal Station, Central Power Electric Cooperative, Inc., Voltaire, N. Oak., was designed and constructed for firing pulverized lignite exclusively. It is the largest lignite-fired, power-generating station in North Dakota. The 44,000-kw. Lewis and Clark Station of the Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., Sidney, Mont., is fired by a similar pulverizing system. Operation of this plant was begun in October 1958. At Fergus Falls, Minn., the 53,500-kw. Hoot Lake Station of the Otter Tail Power Co., also using a pulverized lignite-firing system, began operating in September 1959.

During the years 1983-1987, a research programme, jointly performed by the steel producers ARBED, British Steel Corporation, Peine-Salzgitter, Unimetal, and co-sponsored by the European Community for Steel and Coal (ECSC), has been carried out on steel H-piles of different shapes. The initial aim of the testing programme has been the improvement of bearing capacity, both in sandy and clayey soils. At two test sites, standard H-beams are compared to H-piles with different types of laggings or to H-piles grouted both under low and high pressure. In this paper and in view of the open european market in 1992, the H-pile capacities and their corresponding allowable loads, determined from codes, recommendations and computation procedures in use in Belgium/Luxembourg (B/L), France (F), Federal Republic of Germany (G), and the United Kingdom (UK) as well as their evaluation from dynamic CAPWAP and Case methods are compared to the static capacities measured in-situ. In addition, procedures for estimating the load/movement behaviour of H-piles from CPT, pressuremeter, and CAPWAP are compared to the measured curves.

Reduced intrusion-related gold deposits have become a new, low-grade, large-tonnage exploration target during the last decade. The best recognized examples of such deposits are recognized throughout the Tintina Gold Province of the northern North American Cordillera. Because such examples may have many features in common with orogenic gold deposits, such as anomalous Bi, W and Te, low salinity and CO2-rich ore fluids, and a spatial/temporal association with igneous rocks, confusion and controversy have now become commonplace in classification of many gold deposits formed along convergent margins. The best discriminators of IRGS are likely to be their: +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; regional location in deformed shelf sequences on the inboard side of a series of accreted terranes and within terranes that also contain important tin and (or) tungsten deposits; +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; local spatial association of gold ores with cupolas and contact aureoles of relatively reduced, alkaline-leaning, and volatile-rich plutons; +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; post-deformational timing of gold deposition; +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; extremely low sulfide content (commonly &lt;1 vol %) of ores within igneous bodies and the outward zoning, through proximal skarns and to distal base metal-rich veins, from the causative pluton; and +&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; low grades (&lt;1 g/t Au) of auriferous sheeted vein systems in pluton cupolas.

Mill recoveries are currently 91 YO, accounting for forecast of 98,000 ounces for 1998.New Britannia Mine's mill complex incorporates conventional crushing, grinding and carbon-in-pulp technology. The design capacity of the New Britannia Mine mill is 1850 tonnes per day. The mill has processed upwards of 2300 tonnes per day, with no required upgrades.Gold recovery averaged 89.8% for 1997 compared to the planned 87% recovery expected from projected metallurgical test work. Year to date recovery mid December 1998 stands at 91.1 %Cash costs for the 1998 year to date were down to U.S. $221.49 per ounce, down 12% from the 3rd quarter of 1997. Milling costs for 1998 YTD were at Cdn. $9.38 per tonne and Cdn. $73.50 per ounce.Geology - (Orebody Description)The Snow Lake gold deposit is located within the Aphebian Flin Flon / Snow Lake Greenstone belt. This belt is composed of an assemblage of poly-deformed volcanosedimentary supercrustal sequences intruded by pre and sin tectonic ultra mafic and mafic intrusions and sin to post tectonic granitoid.The principal gold bearing rock at the New Britannia Mine is made up of quartzcarbonate material in sequence of basic and acidic volcanic rocks contained within a shear zone. The ore itself is gold associated with the sulphide mineral arsenopyrite and contains some pyrite, pyrotite, plus chalcopyrite. Proven and probable reserves at December 31, 1997 were at 4.04 million tonnes at 4.6 g/t and underground exploration continues to confirm the extension of the ore zones to depth."
