"We will attempt to explain the basic workings of a modern seismograph and how the recorded data can be interpreted, not only for determining compliance to the regulations, but also in determining whether or not a seismograph record is accurate and valid. We will discuss some parameters that should be included in all seismographic recordings. We will give examples and use overhead slidesto show examples of both accurate and valid recordings, and tampered and inaccurate seismograph recordings. Much of the information presented will be basic in nature, and will reflect the opinions and personal experiences of the author. We ho'pe the listener will gain valuable information concerning the use and interpretation of seismographic data, as well as find interest and sometimes humor in the examples shown."

The primary function of a support slurry is to provide stability during excavation. Today foundation structures can be designed around the additional friction afforded by the absence of the filter cake attributable to the use of polymeric fluids as support slurries. These fluids use pseudoplastic fluid viscosity to advantage over the fragile thixotropic gel structures of bentonite. Many of today's polymeric fluids are environmentally acceptable for disposal directly to municipal sewers.

This report describes the total effort that went into developing environmental test criteria for general mine instrumentation. The project was a two-phase effort. Phase I consisted of research and mine visits to develop an environmental profile for mine instrumentation. The profile was translated into general requirements and then into test requirements. A review of existing government and commercial specifications was performed to determine if they matched mine instrumentation test requirements. Finally, a set of environmental test procedures was developed for the testing of mine instrumentation. Phase II consisted of selecting and purchasing sample mine instrumentation and subjecting them to the previously developed tests. The purpose was twofold: (1) to evaluate the criteria developed for use as an instrumentation test document and (2) to determine the effects of the various criteria on a representative sample of both proven and newly developed instrumentation. The test criteria were then modified, based on the results of the testing, and are listed therein.

Interlocking H sections with deep webs and high section modulus are being used for cofferdams and shore enclosures where pressures are excessive. The H sections can be as much as a meter deep; they can be used as continuous interlocked wall. A steel saving alternate is spacing the H and driving deep for stability then filling between with shorter interlocking sheet piles. Templates provide for exact positioning.

Charcoal is an interesting reducing agent because it is produced from growing wood which is renewable and does not contribute to global warming, provided that there is a balance between the felling of timber and growth of trees. In the biocarbon project the possibilities for using charcoal is investigated as well as other biological based and renewable reductants for ferroalloy production. The background for the project is that the Norwegian ferroalloy producers wish to contribute to reduction of CO2- emissions. This paper focuses on the use of charcoal instead of coke for the production of manganese alloys, and the consequences of doing so. Results from practical SiMn smelting experiments on a pilot scale have previously been reported, where only 12-14 % Si in the metal was obtained when charcoal was used. Recently we have attained satisfactory 18 %Si also for charcoal, but good results are indeed dependant on good furnace performance. There is no tradition for using charcoal for manganese production in Norway. A change from using mainly coke to the use of some charcoal will demand new routines for furnace operation, raw material and off-gas handling. Hence, characteristic properties of charcoal, which may cause change of furnace operation, have been measured and are compared to coke. The following results are presented: ?Thermal abrasion strength together with CO2- reactivity; important parameters for the performance of the upper part of the furnace. ?Coke-bed resistance; it will increase with the use of charcoal (a review of new results). ?Slag reactivity; a relevant method for testing slag reactivity of industrial reductants is of interest. The suggested method can serve for comparing slag reactivities towards graphite.

Halliburton Services and Brown & Root have developed a unique foundation system that blends oilfield and construction technologies to construct deep foundations which offer significant advantages across a variety of soil profiles. This highly efficient system is being developed to meet the construction industry's needs into the 21st Century. Based on a concept initially introduced to Halliburton Services by V.L. Schellhorn in 1987, Halliburton combined their existing cement slurry mixing and pumping technology with oilfield drilling practices and a new tool design to field test the viability of the concept. Results looked encouraging, and Halliburton asked it's sister company, Brown & Root to evaluate and further develop the process. With Brown & Root's knowledge of the construction industry, the original concept has developed into a viable and efficient foundation construction system.

"Following a significant reduction in world Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) capacity from 2003 to 2008, a major optimization initiative was successfully carried out on the lead upgrading and bulk (zinclead) flotation circuits in the Brunswick Concentrator.This paper describes the process improvements that have taken place in order to reduce the quantity of bulk concentrate:•,Increase in lead upgrading rougher flotation circuit capacity•,Installation of a closed-circuit bulk regrind utilizing MillPebs and 150 mm Cavex hydrocyclones•,Installation of two additional cleaner flotation stages on the bulk circuit•,Optimization of the manipulated variables in the lead upgrading and bulk circuitsINTRODUCTIONThe Brunswick Mine (Xstrata Zinc Canada) is located near Bathurst, New Brunswick and is one of the world’s largest lead/zinc mines. Milling of ore commenced in 1964 from the No. 12 orebody, with an expansion in 1966 to accommodate ore from the No. 6 open pit mine. The planned closure of the mine will take place at the end of the first quarter in 2013. The ore is a complex massive sulphide, consisting of approximately 20% valuable minerals, 60% pyrite and 20% silicates.A simplified flowsheet for the concentrator is given in Figure 1. The overall flowsheet involves SAG milling, secondary ball milling, selective flotation, and dewatering by thickening, filtering and drying. The complexity of the flowsheet evolves from the requirements for fine grinding and the production of four concentrates: zinc (sphalerite), lead (galena), copper (chalcopyrite) and bulk (sphalerite plus galena).Primary hydrocyclone overflow feeds the copper-lead aerator-roughers for flotation at pH 9.0 with soda ash. Plant xanthate (80-20 sodium isopropyl and potassium amyl) and AP407 are used as collectors in the copper-lead circuit. The rougher concentrate is directed to the copper-lead regrind circuit and the tailings are fed to the secondary grinding circuit. The secondary hydrocyclone overflow from the secondary grinding circuit feeds the copper-lead rougher-scavenger banks. Rougher concentrates are reground to a P80 of 28 µm prior to three stages of copper-lead cleaning. The first stage of cleaning is done in an open circuit with the tail reporting to the cleaner scavenger. The cleaner scavenger concentrate reports to the regrind circuit and the cleaner scavenger tail combines with the rougher/scavenger tail to feed the zinc circuit. The second and third stages of cleaning are performed in closed circuit with the cleaner tail being recycled to the copper-lead regrind circuit. The average final concentrate grades 23% Pb, 3% Cu and 704 g/t Ag, and is fed to the copper separation circuit."

Deep-sea mineral SMS deposits present some of the world’s most challenging conditions for drilling equipment. As robotic seabed drilling services mature so too the ways that clients engage with service providers to maximise their data requirements. This presentation reviews key considerations for planning and executing a successful seabeddrilling program in variable mineralised deposits. Some of the means of collaboration between robotic seabed drilling contractors and those hiring their services are explored; where improved efficiencies and recoveries over the period of a drilling programme could be achieved. Potentially new technology or methodology can be looked at to further improve these approaches.

Murrin Murrin Operations have not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues, many of which are the result of design decisions, have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are: the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency; the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids; the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system. In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system was improved through mechanical modification as follows:CCD1 rake mechanism was modified to allow central vertical lift of 600 mm; and CCD1 changed to forced dilution using the Outokumpu TurbodilRântechnology by replacing the E-DucânRtechnology of Eimco. The installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system changes are discussed in this paper.

El presente trabajo señala la geología, litología y mineralización del yacimiento minero El Tapado del distrito Yanacocha, situado al norte de Cajamarca. Este se encuentra conformado por diferentes depósitos auríferos epitermales de alta sulfuración, los cuales se desarrollan dentro de un vulcanismo calco-alcalino de composición andesítica a dacítica de edad Mioceno y son correlacionables con la Formación Porculla del Grupo Calipuy. La geología del depósito está conformada por rocas porfiríticas (intrusiones) y flujos piroclásticos tales como tufos de cristales, tufos líticos y brechas piroclásticas afectados por eventos eruptivos de brechas freáticas - freatomagmáticas. Todas estas rocas han sufrido posterior alteración hidrotermal con ensambles típicos de sistemas tipo ácido-sulfato. La mineralización económica está controlada por procesos hidrotermales y se encuentra asociada a sílice masiva y sílice vuggy ( 1-10 g/t Au y estructuras de hasta 136 g/t Au ) y en menor grado sílice alunita y sílice granular (moderada a baja ley).

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The formation of orogenic gold deposits is commonly a two-stage process. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. Cobalt is currently a critical metal because of the increasing number of electrical vehicles forecast for production. Copper and zinc are base metals that are used in many everyday applications, including vehicle production. Eti Bakir Co. Mazidagi Phosphate Plants in the Mazidagi district of Mardin, Turkey is a multi-product facility that produces cobalt, copper, and zinc, as well as fertilizers, from the roaster calcine. Roaster off gas is treated in a sulfuric acid plant (SAP) and the acid itself is utilized in fertilizer production. The comminution circuit, roaster, SAP, and calcine leaching process were developed by Outotec and integrated with the fertilizer production process implemented by Eti Bakir A.Ş. This paper describes the hydrometallurgical calcine leaching process used at the plant, with a focus on the oxidative pressure leaching of the cobalt, zinc, and copper-containing calcine. The cold and hot commissioning phases of the pressure leaching autoclave start-up are discussed together with experiences from the ramp-up period. The production processes of the copper cathode and cobalt and zinc-containing salts are also presented together with some of the plant’s operating parameters. INTRODUCTION The ETI Bakir A.S. fertilizer plant, Turkey, is located in Mardin Province near the border with Syria, (Figure 1). The leaching plant project was started in 2012. The purpose of the plant is to separate the valuable metals from the calcine produced by the pyrite roasters, which are used to produce a SO2 containing gas for the new sulfuric acid plant. Fertilizer production requires sulfuric acid, and for this reason a sulfuric acid plant was built; customer already had access to pyrite concentrate, which is used as the roaster feed. During the engineering phase of the roaster and acid plants it was noticed that the roasted calcine contained considerable amounts of valuable metals like cobalt, copper, and zinc. To recover these metals, a calcine leaching process was developed at the Outotec Research Center in Pori, Finland. The main process connections of the Mazidagi site are shown in Figure 2.

Engineers at the Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center have been a research program investigating the theory and application of mine sampling. Part of this program is an investigation of the efficiency of sampling methods that involves development of sampling-method theory through simulating ore-deposit samples and assays, using - electronic digital computer. Theoretical developments are checked against actual ore-deposit sampling, assay, and production data by the commonly used polygonal and triangular methods of computing grade and tonnage of ore reserves. To speed the computing procedures, a program has been developed utilizing a medium-size digital computer for computing ore reserves by the polygonal method. This program calculates nine prismoids per minute at a total cost of $0.21 per prismoid. The complete program, written for an augmented IBM 650 computer, is described in detail; it can be used without change for computing ore reserves for a low-grade deposit. Modifications necessary to convert the program to compute ore reserves for virtually any other type of deposit or grouping of ore horizons also are given; however, the program is limited to using only vertical drill-hole data.

The Pascua Lama Project is situated on the border of Chile and Argentina at an elevation of 4,800 m. The ore contains gold, silver and copper, and an initial milling production rate of 33,000 t/d is planned. The mineralogy of this deposit is unusual. The ore is hard and abrasive, and it contains a complex array of sulphate minerals, such as chalcanthite, jarosites and alunites. The sulphides are predominantly enargite and pyrite. A novel flowsheet has therefore been developed, which includes dry grinding and ore washing to remove and then neutralize the soluble salts, prior to flotation, cyanide leaching and Merrill-Crowe recovery of the precious metals. These metallurgical issues and challenges associated with plant design and construction in the high and remote Andes Mountains make this a particularly challenging project.

Previous studies and research efforts have shown that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a problem in the U.S. mining industry. In response, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been conducting a cross-sectional survey of equip­ment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to estimate the potential for NIHL within the mining community. One commodity recently surveyed was the extraction of sand and gravel from surface pits and by dredging. To address the potential for NIHL in the sand and gravel industry, sound levels on and around the dredges and processing equipment were recorded to iden­tify areas of high noise levels. Full-shift worker dosimetry, in conjunction with task observations, was documented to determine the relationship between exposure and source. This paper presents research examining noise on dredges used in several surface mine sand and gravel operations and in the processing facilities. Results indicate that there are areas on the dredges (crane, suction pumps and diesel engines) where sound levels greater than 90 dB(A) are pres­ent. In addition, crushers and screens used in the processing of the sand and gravel also generate sound levels greater than 90 dB(A). Although no surveyed worker exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA’s) permissible exposure level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA8), laborers, mechanics, oilers, helpers, pickers and greasers are the workers most likely to be exposed to hazardous sound levels and to thus develop NIHL over time

Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred at various times in several working districts of Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W.They have occurred in headings only, under both hand and mechanised conditions, and with seam gas ranging from mainly methane to nearly pure carbon dioxide. A modification of inducer shotfiring using a shear cut was introduced in 1955, and in 1961 full face firing both to a machine cut shear and off the solid was introduced. The current series of outbursts -1961 to 1963 - has been induced under these systems with full control of the time of outburst, but without prediction, and with some disappointing production features.Various aspects of current conditions and practices at Metropolitan are considered singular, such as the coarse granulometry of outburst coal, the prevalence of floor heave, the absence of strong structures at outburst sites, the possibility of outburst at any stage in pillar formation up to the last few yards, the effect of rate of advance on outburst occurrence, and the mildness of many outbursts experienced.It is concluded that inducer shotfiring is a reliable control but it suffers by comparison with outburst-free conditions, and that control by preyention would be preferable.INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas has been described in detail previously (Hargraves, 1958). Briefly, it is a combined gas and stress hazard of deep coal mining, usually occurring in virgin work and during active face advance, when coal and seam gas burst from the face into the workings.Instantaneous outbursts have occurred sporadically at Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W., since 1895. This paper will review several projects completed during the period from 1976 through 1984 which have been carried out utilizing big hole drilling concepts. The projects discussed will be from various industries to demonstrate the extent that big hole drilling methods are being used along with the current state of development. There will be a discussion of projects planned for the future where big hole drilling methods are the only technology being considered. Also included in the discussions will be an overview of the most recently completed heavy oil recovery project. During the next decade, big hole drilling methods will be used more and more in all industries where underground access is required. The safety, speed and economics associated with shaft sinking using drilling methods are becoming more and more recognized and the technology is rapidly becoming an accepted shaft sinking method.

Synthesis report on a project carried out under the EC-funded BRITE-EURAM programme. A large deposit in Spain and several smaller ones in Greece and Sweden were investigated. Beneficiation testwork, including the development of an innovative wet circuit, was undertaken in Italy. The Spanish Ilustracion deposit lies occurs in thin, white layers throughout a zone 35-40 m thick and 1.5 km long, in laminated calcsilicates. Total resources of more than 100 000 000 t include proven open-pittable reserves of 4 500 000 t averaging 35% wollastonite. The beneficiated product is suitable for various applications, including ceramics. The Swedish and Greek marble-hosted skarn deposits include Albatross, with 2 500 000 t of reserves at 30% wollastonite, and Panorama, with reserves estimated at more than 700 000 t
