For a state whose roots are in mining, most Colorado residents probably do not realize that the industry still contributes heavily to the state’s economy. In 2005, the industry contributed, directly and indirectly, about $8 billion to the state’s economy, according to the Colorado Mining Association (CMA). It employed nearly 10,000 people at mines and support businesses. And the mining industry in Colorado is one of the highest paying occupations in the state, averaging about $80,000 a year in wages and benefits. The state’s coal mining industry produced nearly 36 Mt (40 million st) of coal in 2005, valued at $800 million, the CMA said. That was seventh in the nation. And Colorado’s only major gold mine produced 10.2 t (329,000 oz) last year, valued at $124 million. That was third in the nation. And Phelps Dodge’s Henderson Mine produced about 12.7 kt (28 million lbs) of molybdenum, valued at $350 million. Colorado is the largest molybdenum producing state in the nation.

Deer Island is the site of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) wastewater treatment plant which, when completed in 1999, will serve 43 cities and towns in central eastern Massachusetts. Deer Island is located in the Boston Harbor, as shown on Figure 1. The existing wastewater treatment plant on Deer Island is being upgraded to include secondary treatment to comply with Federal require­ments. The new treatment facilities will process an average of 455 million gallons of sewage per day; total capacity will be about one billion gallons per day. The new treatment facilities will cover virtually the entire island. [ ]

The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on coal dust explosion suppression. The investigation took place on a beltway in the double-entry of the Bureau's Experimental Mine. Using conditions that simulate those in a working mine, the investigation showed that a coal dust explosion can be readily initiated in a conveyor belt entry. Also, the explosion can spread into adjacent entries through opened crosscuts (stopping destroyed by explosion) to propagate for long distances even though the adjacent entries are rock dusted in compliance with regulations. Passive water barriers (water-filled tubs) were found to be effective in suppressing explosions on a beltway; however, barrier efficiency was reduced by opened crosscuts. The study indicated that the beltway barrier should be the distributed type consisting of continuous rows of water-filled tubs covering long distances along the entry. A plan is outlined for the installation of a water barrier system in a working coal mine for the protection of a beltway.

In this study, the flotation performances of ethoxycarbonyl thionocarbamate (ECTC), dialkyl thionocarbamate (DATC) and xanthate copper sulfide collectors are compared by the structure-reactivity relationship using generalized perturbation theory and density functional calculation at the B3PW91/6-31G(D) level. The electron-donating power of xanthates is strong and, therefore, xanthates can strongly react with metal cation on the surfaces of copper and iron sulfide minerals through the formation of normal covalent bonds. This explains the poor selectivity of xanthates and also the high pH levels (above 13) required for the flotation separation of copper/iron sulfide minerals. DATCs are more selective for copper sulfide flotation, particularly against gangue iron sulfides. Although less powerful than xanthates, DATCs can perform copper/iron flotation separation at lower operating pH (commonly at pH levels below 11.5). ECTCs use an ethoxycarbonyl replacing an alkyl N-substituent in DATCs. The presence of the ethoxycarbonyl group effectively changes the functional group of collector from -C(=S)NH- to -C(=S)NHC(=O)-. The strong electron-withdrawing ethoxycarbonyl group adjacent to the C=S group decreases the electron density of the sulfur atom, which improves ECTC?s selectivity against iron sulfide minerals at slightly alkaline conditions. The lowest unoccupied molecular orbit (LUMO) of ECTC, which is constituted by the pz-orbit of every atoms in the conjugate -O-C(=O)-N-C(=S)-O- group and which is pleased with accepting richly d-orbital electrons (feedback electrons) from the (t2g)6(eg)3Cu(II) or t6e4Cu(I) configuration of copper cation on the surfaces of copper sulfide minerals, resulted in the formation of dative p-bond. The iron atom, which has a (t2g)6Fe(II) or (t2ga)3(ega)2 Fe(III) configuration on the surfaces of iron sulfide minerals (Fe(III) is the predominant composition at alkaline conditions), has difficulty in offering its d-orbital electrons (feedback electrons) to ECTC?s LUMO. ECTC collectors are powerful for copper sulfide minerals and very selective against iron sulfides, which has been further confirmed by UV spectra and bench-scale and industrial-scale flotation tests.

A series of controlled experiments was conducted at four surface coal mines to study the effects of certain blast parameters upon the ground and air vibration. Preliminary scale-model blasts were conducted at a quarry to provide basic data. It was found that the amplitudes of the ground and air vibration were controlled by the maximum explosive weight per delay. Either cube root or square root scaling could be used for the seismic amplitudes, and cube root scaling could be used for the overpressure amplitudes. Both amplitudes were not significantly affected by the total charge weight per blast, the attitude of the boreholes, or the charge length or diameter. The overpressure amplitudes were affected by the charge depth, the use of cover over surface detonating cord, and the use of adequate stemming. The length of the delay intervals and the spacing of holes were important in determining the potential for reinforcement of the amplitudes in certain directions from the blasts. In downwind directions from the blast, the attenuation of the overpressure with distance decreases. Surface terrain t did not significantly affect the overpressure amplitudes within the range investigated. The type of overburden affects the generation of both amplitudes and the propagation of the seismic amplitudes. Spectral analysis of the ground and air vibration is reported. A bibliography of pertinent literature is included as an appendix. A scaled distance of 300 ft/lb1/3 should produce a peak particle velocity of less than 1 ips and an overpressure of less than 128 dB linear peak. For square root scaling, a scaled distance of 75 ft/lbl/2 should limit the ground vibration to less than 1 ips.

A petrographic and microthermometric study of fluid inclusions in the Kentstown Granite, crosscutting quartz (VI) and calcite+quartz (V 2) veins in the granite and calcite+quartz (V 2) veins in the overlying sediments was performed on samples taken from the borehole. Comparisons of the type 1, type 2 and type 3 fluid inclusion populations recorded in the present study with those from other Irish Caledonian granites strongly suggest a similar fluid evolutionary history. Furthermore, the low-temperature CaC12-rich brines (type 5) of this study, which must be syn- to post-Lower Carboniferous in age, have correlatives both in Irish Caledonian granites and in the Lower Carboniferous base-metal deposits of the Irish midlands

Dust surveys were conducted at six underground coal mines to determine if deep-cutting practices expose face workers to higher levels of respirable dust. The surveyed mines were able to successfully mine deep cuts without significantly increasing the dust exposures of face workers. For exhausting face ventilation, field data indicate that scrubber airflow is the most important factor for controlling dust. Data collected for this study indicate that 20-mesh screens should be cleaned for every 40 ft of advance because 22% of the deep cuts surveyed for this study experienced a 20% to 35% decrease in scrubber airflow over the course of the cut. For blowing face ventilation, field data and past research indicate that dust control is aided by maintaining a proper curtain-to-scrubber airflow ratio of 1.0 (measured before scrubber activation) as well as a curtain setback distance that allows the miner operator to stand at the mouth of the curtain for the entire cut. Dust levels on the bolting faces did not appear to be affected by the longer cycles associated with deep-cut mining when good ventilation practices were used.

"Abstract The lateral earth pressure of vertical circular shaft is investigated by using experimental tests and a theoretical analysis. The emphasis was quantifying on the magnitude and distribution of a lateral earth pressure measured by three-dimensional arching effect. A framework for determining the earth pressure distribution on the basis of both centrifuge model and full-scale field test results is introduced. Through these studies, it is found that the lateral earth pressure decreases within active displacement (dh/H: 0.2×10-2, dh: horizontal displacement, H: Height of vertical shaft) of wall at deep excavation and the arching effect is more significant for deep excavation than for shallow excavation. It is also found that the lateral earth pressure acting on a vertical circular shaft considering arching effect is 70% smaller than that calculated by Rankine theory, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of realistic earth pressure for vertical circular shaft subjected to arching pressure.INTRODUCTIONIn South Korea, an increasing need for underground excavation and the application of the vertical circular wall (i.e. vertical shaft) is becoming an important issue in engineering practice. Here the vertical circular wall is generally embedded in soft or hard rocks through weathered soil varying thicknesses ranging up to 15 m. Since 1980, a number of huge excavation projects such as underground space for constructing power stations, subways, high-speed railways, and many lifeline constructions have been performed in urban areas (Jeong and Seo, 2004). Although there have been considerable advancements in construction techniques involving vertical circular wall, it is still very important for tunnel engineers to control the lateral earth pressure. Additionally, Proper estimation of earth pressures is a key factor in design of vertical circular wall. Because of three dimensional arching effects, i.e. convex arching and/or inverted arching, the earth pressure acting on a circular type of wall is less than other types. Thus, the vertical circular wall is generally used."

Continuing the systematic investigation of the influence of elements on the properties of lead(1). If the effects of additions of copper (up to 0.3%) on Port Pirie lead have now been determined in so far as creep rate is concerned.The results in the present paper contain also a survey of the influence of copper on the micro-structure of lead, a feature which has not appeared in the previous papers of this series. Further, it has now become known that creep is but little related to the more usually determined properties such as hardness and tensile strength. Since, however, these properties are of considerable importance in connection with the fabrication and use of this metal. Brinell hardness determinations have also been made and are here included.It is becoming more and more realised also that to be useful, creep data should refer to stresses of the order of those used in practice. This is due to the fact that as soon as deformation takes place, the properties of the metal are automatically changed. Lead does, of course, creep during industrial use, and probably (in lead chamber construction for example) extensions of the order of 5%...

Middle Proterozoic sulphide ore mineralisation occurs in isolated blocks of the NE-SW trending Delhi fold belt composed of Delhi Supergroup rocks. The Ajari-Basantgarh-Pipela belt forms part of the longest, widest and westernmost tectonic unit of the Delhi fold belt and consists of amphibolites, metapelites, quartzites and carbonates. The metapelite lenses and associated amphibolites host pyritic copper mineralisation. Mineralisation takes the form of sheet-like bodies consisting of ore lenses of various sizes interlayered with host or associated rocks. Massive, banded and disseminated varieties of ore are found. Pyrite is dominant with subordinate chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Pyrrhotite, galena, cubanite, mackinawite, marcasite and freibergite constitute the minor minerals. The characteristic features of the ores suggest a possible correlation with Besshi-type deposits, and the closely associated amphibolites are interpreted as low-K tholeiites of a fore-arc setting

Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties as well as the behaviour of the mould fluxes during melting, important in order to improve continuous casting operations. Lubrication and control of heat transfer in the mould are the more relevant functions of these materials. Values of physical properties like viscosity and surface tension at melting range temperatures are required, as much as the thermal behaviour under process conditions. The heat extraction from the liquid steel has an important effect in the final quality of products. Mould fluxes are constituted by different oxides, and may form glasses and crystal phases during cooling. The solidification rate and the chemical composition determine the proportion, type and crystalline morphology, which are responsible of the thermal transfer processes. In this paper, viscosity values are reported in the melting range temperatures calculated by means of the Riboud model and compared with fluidity results obtained by the inclined plane technique. Also the linear expansion of the mould fluxes at high temperatures was determined by dilatometry. The crystallization in two different fluxes was determined by DTA tests and correlated with the basicity index. Crystal phases were evaluated by scanning electronic microscopy on quenched samples at 1300°C. This information is relevant to increase the knowledge on the peritectic steel grades casting process in order to improve its quality. Mesoporous gold sponge has the unique property of being both metallic and highly resistant to oxidation. It has potential application in catalysis, in bio-sensors, in optical coatings, in analytical chemistry and, as we show here, as the basis for a new kind of ultra-capacitor. Due to the cost of gold, the most probable niche for a gold-based ultra-capacitor would be in the high-power/high-energy regime, a region where gold would compete with devices based on RuO2. A high internal resistance limits the power that can be usefully drawn from existing carbon-based ultra-capacitors, and that this problem can potentially be overcome by gold-based devices. A simple proof-of-concept ultra-capacitor based on mesoporous gold is described and its behaviour during charge and discharge cycles examined. In this work a step change in the input or output voltage of the device was used as the controlling parameter. There was also a residual faradaic current resulting from traces of undissolved aluminium left over from the AuAl2 precursor used to make the sponge, and some charge storage due to polarization of the solution. Deconvolution of these three effects was not entirely accomplished, but an ostensible capacitance of about 7 to 14 mF/g Au was demonstrated. Further improvement from these early results seems likely.

Ground support performance is critical to the safe and economical extraction of ore. This is particularly important for mass mining extractions at great depth, which are currently being considered by a large number of mining companies worldwide. As the in situ stresses concentrate around critical excavations, failure occurs at the excavation boundaries and ground support is required for the excavations to remain safe and accessible for their intended lifespan. Ground support consists of reinforcing elements that are installed within the rock mass to modify its internal behaviour (generally to within one excavation radius) and surface support elements that are installed at the exposed boundaries to retain the failed pieces of rock. For surface support to be effective, the loadings need to be transferred to the reinforcing elements; however, the combined performance of rock bolts and mesh is poorly understood in terms of the energy dissipation capacity available for a typical ground support scheme implemented at most mass mining operations.Over the last 15 years or so, a large number of large-scale laboratory experiments have been completed at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) Dynamic Test Facility for reinforcement systems and surface support systems loaded separately. The objective of more recent testing has been to establish the combined energy dissipation capacity of typical and enhanced reinforcement systems combined with mesh surface support. Total energy dissipation has been separated into energy dissipation attributable to the reinforcement and to the mesh. Over the years as surface mining operations have become more sophisticated, angle drilling has become a more popular blast design technique, especially in areas where overburden and stripping ratios have increased. Another method of blast design is the staggered pattern, which greatly improves explosives distribution within the blast. While both methods present some engineering challenges, this paper will discuss how the two methods can be combined to enhance fragmentation, improve cast percentage, drill production ratios and highwall control. A practical engineering approach will be presented as well as a discussion on the discipline required to maintain a quality blasting plan.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers mounted in suspension components can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a Global Positioning System is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, then the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck.

The site of the First Quality Tissue plant is located on a previous paper production facility in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. The new development, which included the construction of a tissue machine building, baled building, converting building, various storage buildings and an electrical switchgear building, required the use of deep foundation systems to transfer loads below compressible fill and alluvial soils. Loading details provided by Jacobs Engineering, the project structural engineer, detailed braced steel frame buildings with typical column loads ranging from 75 to 150 kips and slab live loads of 250 to 300 psf. As an exception to this, however, the tissue machine and stock preparation building, which had a roof height ranging up to 85 feet, had column loads ranging up to 800 kips in addition to high dynamic loads. The First Tissue plant is located in a river valley in the hills of Western Pennsylvania. To evaluate the proposed site conditions and to formulate recommendations for the structure foundations, a geotechnical study was performed by the owner. Approximately 30 borings were advanced to bedrock, with wire-line coring performed in the tissue machine building. The borings disclosed a soil profile comprising of the following:
