The Cortez gold mine is located in Lander County, NR, about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Elko. Cortez Gold Mines (CGM) is a joint venture between Placer Dome US Inc. (60% operator) and Kennecott Corp. (40%). The claims that supply oxide and refractory ore feed to the Cortez milling facility are located in both Lander and Eureka counties. These include the Cortez and Horse Canyon deposits, all operated by the joint venture. Other deposits outside the CGM claim area include Fire Creek, Buckhorn, Gold Bar and Tonkin Springs. These deposits all occur along the Battle Mountain-Eureka Trend. History Mining in the Cortez district began in 1862 with the discovery of high-grade silver ores. Grades in the hundreds of ounces per ton occurred in an area 7 km (4.5 miles) southeast of the current CGM mill site. Underground mining through the Garrison and Arctic tunnels provided the bulk of the ore production between 1864 and 1895. To a lesser extent, the Mill Canyon area also supplied ore until 1930.

Recent advances in GPS, machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50mm (2 inches).Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining – even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste: tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine: real time productivity monitoring: detailed post accident safety analysis: tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

In this study, a computer program to design tunnel blasting pattern has been developed. The program consists of two parts; one is for tunnel blasting pattern design and the other is for blasting modeling to estimate the peak particle velocity, the distribution of fragmentation and the excavation damage zone. We modified the design method of tunnel blasting pattern suggested by Langefors because it provided undesirable pattern in blasting practices such as considerably large center cut and too large burden for Vcut as drilling length increased. As a result, the burden and spacing were reduced to practically appropriate amounts. In addition, the correlation between rock mass rate, RMR, and rock constant in blasting, c, was analyzed based on the data collected from twenty three tests of tunnel blasting. It was concluded that the correlation between them was fairly good enough to be applied in cut design. In order to check the validity of the modified methods and their practical applicability, test blasting was carried out at two different tunnel construction sites in Korea. The results were satisfactory in that the average rate of advance was 90% and the overbreak did not cause additional support. Futhermore, the developed program is capable of estimating peak particle velocity by using (a) the existing vibration equations, (b) the vibration equation obtained by test blasting to check out the practical applicability of the designed blasting pattern. Feedback is implemented into the program to adjust the designed blasting pattern and control the vibration.

Mount Isa Mines Limited first installed electronic data processing equipment in 1959. The decision to replace this equipment with a computer was motivated by the need for greater processing power and the availability of new and less expensive computers. Consideration of hardware software and delivery features of available equipment, resulted in the selectIon of an ICT 1900 series computer which was installed in March 1966. Special air-conditioning and power stabilization equipment was also required.Systems design and programming was carried out by personnel recruited from within the Company and trained by the computer manufacturer. Early work was hindered by the problems of remote location.Initial applications were basically accounting functions whIch were taken over from the EDP installation. Subsequently computer applIcatIOns of a more complex technical nature have been undertaken. Future work will include both "scientific" and data processing applications.

Vein swarms in metamorphic terranes such as the Otago Schist Belt, New Zealand provide evidence of past hydrothermal flow systems leading to fault initiation and reactivation. A major episode of hydrofracturing and fluid redistribution occurred during early Cretaceous exhumation of the schist belt. As a result, presently exposed lower greenschist facies greyschists in NW Otago are pervaded by abundant quartz-filled hydraulic extension fractures with associated normal faults hosting quartz¦scheelite¦gold mineralisation. Once the effects of Cenozoic folding have been removed, a regional subhorizontal schist foliation contains an aligned array of subvertical hydrofractures striking NNW, striking parallel to a set of low-slip conjugate normal faults; the array extends over an area >1500 km2 and over a depth interval >5 km. The hydrofracture array comprises a mesh of interlinked extensional-shear and pure extension veins. These veins show mutually cross-cutting relations. Two structurally and mineralogically distinct sulphiderich veins cross-cutting the disseminated sulphides of the Nairne Pyrite Member appear to be products of local remobilization of sulphides under fracture-induced free energy gradients during regional metamorphism and tectonic deformation.The contrasting mineralogy of the two vein types may have arisen as a result of differences in the structural orientation of the veins and!or the relative ages of the veins.

Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016. Nowadays, with such a focus on environmental protection, surface mining activities have come under pressure to ensure their activities do not adversely affect the local surroundings. As part of the extractive process, blasting activities are an integral part of a mining company’s operational cycle. Consequently achieving beneficial blast results while complying with environmental requirements has become a key focus. This especially is the case when firing blasts within close proximity of residents where additional control measures need to be implemented to control vibration. One case where this occurs in Indonesia is in the Paringin Pit, one of the operational areas of the company's. The pit has complex geological conditions and is surrounded by several residential areas. Between 2014 to 2017 there were 12 cases of ground vibration exceedance due to blasting. As part of a continuous improvement project the company's targeted minimizing the vibration exceedance in this area. A project was undertaken to research and develop a method to confidently predict vibration. It was decided that the scaled distance formulas were not adequate to predict vibration when using non-electric detonators, as accurate wave propagation could not be achieved. The problem is how to manage of complex geology condition related with wave propagation in ground vibration control. Geological condition mapping with specific spatial range can and combine with Signature Hole Analysis be a solution to make wave propagation easier to accommodate in ground vibration control. With this new approach geological condition mapping with specific spatial range was produced that would minimize vibration while ensuring beneficial blast results. Introducing the new prediction produced nil cases of vibration exceedance in 2018 and beyond and proved that the Signature Hole Analysis in specific spatial range of geological condition is the preferred method to optimize blast result and maintain vibration control.

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and use of a computerized ore control system at the Cyprus Copperstone Gold Mine near Parker, AZ. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blasthole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation and ore zone stake out, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blasthole information being processed, analyzed and reported daily. Copperstone Gold management has been progressive toward new, efficient methods regarding ore reserve estimation, long-term mine planning, short-term mine planning, ore control and surveying. Technological advances, including powerful personal computers, applicable mine planning software and surveying instrumentation, have become readily available and affordable. The computerized ore control procedures used at Copperstone include sample data collection, laboratory automation and computerized data management. These have reduced the time to complete ore control on a blast pattern by 50% to 75%. The final product - ore control - is generated in a more timely and accurate manner.

This paper discusses the progress of the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine from the pre-feasibility study completed in 2005, through commencement of development access in 2008, completion of the feasibility in 2010 and cave initiation in late 2015. This fourth lift of caving in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is located 500 m below the currently producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and represents approximately half a billion tonnes of ore and around 1900 planned drawpoints, scheduled to be mined at a peak of 80 000 t/d.The paper reviews the mine design, access requirements, planned footprint sequence and major fixed facility installations such as ventilation, oreflow and shops. THE Jacksonville plant of Humphreys Gold Corp., operating under leases from National Lead Co. and Rutile Mining Co. of Florida, recovers rutile, ilmenite, zircon, and monazite from an ancient beach deposit containing about 2.5 pct of these minerals in combination. The location of the plant is unique, being situated about ten miles from the center of Jacksonville, Fla., surrounded by a thriving suburb. Two four-lane highways pass within 1 ½ miles of the plant. An expressway now under construction will pass over the tailing pile, within 500 ft of the mine office. The elevation at the plant site is approximately 50 ft above sea level. This is one of two mines producing titanium minerals and zircon in Florida. Another mine is also operated by Humphreys at Starke, about 50 miles southeast of Jacksonville. In geophysics we say that the earth-tides phenomenon is the elastico-viscous response of the earth's body to the attraction potential of moon and sun. By the fact that the tides on the planet take place in a regular periodic frequency, due to the earth rotation of 24 houres for one cycle, the rotation of the moon in about 28 days around the earth and finally to the rotation of the earth-moon combination around the sun in 365 days this phenomenon is a very important one in geophysics. The exact calculation of the acting forces is possible and the comparison of the earth's body response to these forces as well.

No completely reliable method for characterising and quantifying airborne dust risk exists. A new monitoring technology has been developed whereby dust collected from four-way directional and high volume samplers is analysed for mineral content and particle size for integrated dust mapping. A dust database was set up for the area surrounding the Ffos Las open cast coal site in South Wales. It included XRD directional traces from 17 gauges over 20 months, XRD traces from window ledges in the nearby communities, the major soil types in the area, dust data from haulage roads and public roads and reference-type mineral samples. The database can be accessed relationally to compare and analyse the data using mineral, direction, time, weather and geographical relationships. The successful installation of long piles driven into very dense sands relies on the occurrence of the reduction in local friction with increased pile embedment, a phenomenon known as ?friction fatigue?. The underlying mechanisms controlling friction fatigue are poorly understood, with some design methods including an adjustment for the influence of pile diameter while others do not. This paper back calculates the installation resistance of 0.356m to 2m (14in to 78in) diameter open ended piles driven into very dense sands using wave equation analyses. Cone penetration test data are used to link soil properties to installation resistance. The study illustrates consistent interpretation of a variety of case histories of open ended piles driven in very dense sands using newly developed analysis techniques and normalized parameters. Results provide information on methods for incorporating friction fatigue into drivability studies as well as a discussion of mechanisms related to pipe pile installation resistance in sandy soils.

Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 2005 at a record $758 million (21 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 2005 include salts (halite, potash, and magnesium salts), Portland cement, sand and gravel, carbonates (lime, limestone, and dolomite), phosphate, crushed stone, clays, lightweight aggregate (expanded shale and perlite), gypsum, silica, sulfur and sulfuric acid, and building stone. Commodities produced in smaller amounts include diatomite, pumice, gemstones, ornamental stone, fluorspar, and mineral and fossil specimens. Utah is in a period of rapid growth in industrial rock and mineral production; however, some commodities have grown faster than others. Feed slurries are typically flocculated in a thickenerÆs feedwell to increase the settling rate, underflow density and overflow clarity. High molecular weight polymeric flocculants are normally used, but present a number of challenges in terms of make up, dilution, delivery and mixing with the feed slurry.Various aspects of the flocculant dilution and delivery system have been studied with a combination of flow visualisation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). An open topped flocculant dilution/mixing box has been developed to replace a conventional flocculant manifold, with improvements to the mixing, fault diagnosis and ease of determining the flow split to the various dosing points. The addition points to the feedwell have also been studied, both in terms of where the flocculant is added, and how. While conventional multi-hole spargers are effective in dispersing flocculant, they are prone to blocking and have been replaced by open-ended pipes. The required dispersion is provided by an efficient mixing element placed in the dilution port. Adding the flocculant into the feedwell dilution stream prior to mixing with the slurry also provides super-dilution of the flocculant that can further improve the flocculation process and reduce flocculant consumption.CITATION:Heath, A R and Arbuthnot, I, 2013. Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is a copper, gold and magnetite mining and processing operation located 38 kilometres north east of Cloncurry in the Mount Isa - Cloncurry mineral district of north west Queensland, Australia. The EHM ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite.At the end of 2009, after a series of promising laboratory test work, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. Laboratory test work also indicated that with the use of high chrome media, the pH was able to be reduced with no negative impact on plant performance. At high pH values (above 10.5), the forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response.This paper provides an overview of the effects of reducing the pH in the EHM copper rougher flotation circuit. The pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 to determine the impact on the rougher performance and the subsequent performance of the whole copper flotation circuit. It was found that there was a slightly increased improvement in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold.With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. A calibration of the Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator relates the current in the electromagnet and the transverse slope of the chute to the specific susceptibility at which separation is being effected. In addition to providing a rapid measure of the specific susceptibility of minerals and composite grains, the calibration provides a guide to operation of the Frantz isodynamic separator for mineral separation, and to the nature of composite grains. The most sensitive magnetic separation is obtained by using the highest practicable current and transverse slope, and the lowest practicable longitudinal slope.INTRODUCTIONProbably all minerals have a magnetic susceptibility measurable by sensitive techniques. However, magnetic separation between minerals which have low but different specific susceptibilities, and which for many purposes are considered essentially non-magnetic, has only become practicable with the development of the Frantz isodynamic separator.The construction and principle of this highly sensitive separator has been described by S. G. Frantz as an appendix to a description by 'Gaudin and Spedden (1943) of its application to the separation of sulphides constituting mill products.Various publications (e.g. Hess, 1949, Hutton, 1952) refer to its use in separating the mineral constituents of rocks, ores, and unconsolidated sands.As used in this study the Frantz isodynamic separator consists of a vibrating chute mounted centrally between the pole pieces of an electromagnet (Fig. 1). This unit may be inclined in any direction by the universal mounting, and the electromagnet current is continuously adjustable from 0 to 1·5 amperes.
