The Port Authority of Allegheny County North Shore Connector (NSC) Project involves TBM excavation of twin 690 m (2,240 lf) precast segment lined light rail tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow, downtown city street. The $435 M project is funded 80% ($348 M) by the Federal Government, 17% ($72.5 M) by the State of Pennsylvania and 3% ($14.5 M) by Allegheny County. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations, modern buildings on deep foundations, and one building constructed directly over the alignment. The project includes construction of twin 369 m (1200 lf) cut and cover concrete box tunnels and an underground station shell. This paper provides an overview of general site conditions, current project status and construction challenges for the Twin Tunnels and North Shore Light Rail Station.

"Mineral prospectivity modelling of polymetallic nodule deposits has been completed over the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (CIEEZ) using the GIS based Weights of Evidence modelling technique. Polymetallic nodules, also known as manganese nodules, have been explored as a possible resource for a number of metals including cobalt since the early 1970s. Recent data on the nodule composition and abundance in the CIEEZ has led to a renewed interest in the prospectivity for manganese nodules in the region. The predictive modelling has used the most recently accepted mineral model for polymetallic deep-sea nodule deposition to identify factors that are most likely to map the presence of this type of mineralisation in the CIEEZ.Manganese nodules form on the deep seafloor as concretions formed by concentric layering of iron and manganese hydroxides around a core and they grow at a very slow rate, on the order of millimeters per million years. The available data for the CIEEZ indicates a greater abundance in the area of nodules formed by hydrogenetic processes, which are the result of slow precipitation of metallic components from seawater. The environment in which the nodules are most abundant is at depths between 4,000 m and 6,000 m in areas of low sedimentation rate. Hydrogenous nodules commonly grow on siliceous and pelagic clay sediment, they are less common on other types of sediment."

Keywords: accurate control, matte level, smelting operations, process control, tapping, sounding bar, electromagnetic measurement [ ] Accurate control of matte levels during primary matte smelting operations is desirable in order to improve process decision-making. High matte levels in the vessel could have to disastrous consequences, particularly in the new generation of intensive smelting furnace with deep-cooled copper coolers. Knowing when to commence tapping and a better understanding of melt times can only be improved if the furnace levels are monitored correctly. At Lonmin Marikana Smelter Division it has long been understood that the matte level information being provided by the manual sounding bar is only as good as the operators? following of measurement procedure, their skill in assessing what the sounding bar is displaying, and their individual interpretation of what they are looking at. This paper sets out to show how this problem was identified as an area of major concern to the plant, how a solution was sought and how an electromagnetic measurement system was installed as an alternative measurement to the matte sounding bar system. Other areas discussed in the paper are the difficulties to be overcome when first installing new equipment and how these teething problems were solved by close co-operation between Lonmin and equipment suppliers, which led to some design modifications to the delivery system. In conclusion the paper discusses the results between the electromagnetic measurement and the manual sounding measurement and how best to integrate the generated data into the plant?s process control system for improved decision making.

"The Zenith-Victoria /1/ and Jubileynoye /2/ hydrothermal fields have symmetrical structural position on the Mid Atlantic Ridge (Fig. 1). In order to compare the evolution of hydrothermal systems, we conducted mineralogical and geochemical studies of SMS from both sites.Radiochemical and geochemical investigations of massive sulfides of the Zenith-Victoria field distinguishes three major stages of evolution: initial, interim and final represented by Fe-S, Cu-Fe and Zn-Fe types of SMS respectively /3/. In this talk, we describe the results of geochemical analysis of massive sulfides from the Zenith-Victoria field. Geochemical varieties of SMS are considered to be indicators of the evolutionary stages of the hydrothermal system."

This report incorporates a review of available dewatering technology and an evaluation of its relevance to surface coal mines in the Interior Province of the United States. Guidelines for the selection, design and construction of dewatering systems are included. On the basis of documented experience, candidate dewatering systems were selected and evaluated with respect to their anticipated impact on the environment and mine operations. Included in the discussion is a summary of laws and regulations which can impact on dewatering operations. Following this discussion, geologic and hydrogeologic conditions within the Interior Province are described and potential dewatering problems at surface coal mines are identified. Model mines are developed which exhibit the most difficult dewatering problems identified, and it is demonstrated how available technology can be utilized to deal with these problems. Dewatering of coarse-grained, high permeability terrace deposits might be economically feasible today. Low permeability, saturated glacial tills or lake deposits appear to be significantly outside present economic feasibility for dewatering.

For many years line-of-sight (LOS) issues for underground mobile equipment is a growing focus of research. This research is a result of the numerous fatalities and injuries which occur in the mining industry and which are related to poor operator LOS. Three assessment methods are currently used to assess operator LOS of underground mobile equipment. The light filament (LF) method is a hands-on assessment method that is performed in the field. This method is not evaluated in this paper. The laser scan (LS) method of assessing equipment is a quick and reliable method that comes from the need to evaluate vehicles already located in the field. The computer simulation (CS) method can assess LOS issues using a computer aided drawing (CAD) model, which is useful for assessing current or prototype models. The purpose of the current research is to compare and validate different operator LOS assessment methods. Comparison of the results of the LS and CS visibility plots yielded similar quantifiable results. A visual comparison of the results further illustrate that the LS and CS methods are acceptable assessment tools for mobile equipment operator LOS evaluation. The visibility assessment methods are now being prepared as guidelines for the mining industry to assess current and potential designs.

Model experiments were carried out on the mass transfer of iodine between n-hexane and a 4 2 X 10-3 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The influence of mechanical stirring by means of small gas bubbles (ca. 0.01 ml in volume) on mass transfer was examined in independent experiments. The results were described with the help of the penetration theory and in the case of bubble stirring with the help of a mathematical model based on this theory. S LAG-METAL reactions, especially those in steel-making processes, often occur under conditions where gas is evolved in the form of bubbles that break through the slag-metal interface. It is known that stirring by means of bubbles increases the mass transfer coefficient, but there has been very little quantitative work done in this field. Because of the difficulties that attach to experimental work at high temperatures this study was confined to model experiments at room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The transport of iodine from an n-hexane layer into a weak sodium hydroxide solution was studied a) with stirring by means of bubbles and b) with mechanical stirring. The apparatus for the experiments with bubbles consisted of the cell, two Dreschel bottles filled with hexane in order to saturate the nitrogen flow, one flow meter, and a nitrogen gas cylinder fitted with a fine-regulating valve. Fig. 1 shows the cell consisting of a glass cylinder 33 cm in height with an overall diameter of 7.5 cm embedded in a copper flange. The flange is connected to a Plexiglas plate and to the gas inlet. The Plexiglas plate has holes of 0.2 mm diam bored into it which are spaced 1 cm from each other. For the experiments with mechanical stirring the bottom of the cell was sealed off by a Plexiglas plate. The upper layer was stirred by means of a glass stir-rer and the bottom layer with the help of a magnetic stirrer in a counter rotatory direction. Both stirrer speeds could be varied continuously. "This paper demonstrates the selection of grinding circuit technology for a number of recent projects including discussion of the key drivers and the role of energy efficiency. Decreasing head grades combined with a strong and sustained increase in operating costs has forced miners to examine increased project size, increased equipment capacity and efficiency improvements in order to reduce their unit operating costs and improve overall project economics. Comminution energy consumption, safety and capital cost considerations play a critical role in the success of projects. This paper presents some key guidelines for a successful and cost effective comminution circuit design and includes a case study on three projects, outlining the issues and the drivers which led to the ultimate circuit selection and the critical role that energy efficiency played.IntroductionComminution circuits for minerals processing are selected based on their suitability and efficiency in reducing run-of-mine ore to the desired feed size for the downstream process. The input material (ore) properties and downstream process requirements are the key determinants and there are standard approaches for each circumstance.The minerals processing industry has been a fast adaptor of efficiency improvements based on increasing capacity of equipment (e.g. trucks, crushers, mills, pumps) but less successful in adapting radically new technologies that disrupt incumbent flowsheets or processes.The installed power of grinding mills has increased linearly over the past 25 years (Meka & Lane, 2010) and pumps and classification equipment have kept pace. The autogenous grinding (AG) and semi- autogenous grinding (SAG) mills displaced stage crushing as a dominant method of coarse rock breakage in many applications causing crusher manufactures to increase the capacity of cone crushers to meet the competitive demand.Examples of new comminution technology in the 20th and 21st centuries are the development and adoption of cyclone classification in the 1940s (Newtech, 2016), AG milling in the late 1950s, vertical grinding mills in the 1980s, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) also in the 1980s and ultrafine milling technology in the 1990s (Meka & Lane, 2010)."

The centrifugal elevator invented and patented by the writer is designed for the purpose of conveying the tailings of a gold dredge to such a distance that it shall not impede the dredging opperations. Formerly this was usually accomplished by means of a belt of buckets travelling round a ladder set at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, but this meant heavy wear and tear on the travelling buckets and the tumblers actuating them. The centrifugal elevator throws the tailings through the air to the required height and distance and it is manifest that during their flight from the elevator to the heap there is absolutely no wear and tear, only the attraction of gravity and the resistance of the air has to be overcome. All then there is left to he considered is how to throw the stuff with the minimun of prower and wear on the elevator.The elevator consists of a cam-shaped steel casting with a disc of mild steel plate on either side: These side plates project a few inches beyond the tips of the beaters, in order to prevent odd stones from straying in an undesired direction; they serve also to prevent extra large stones from reaching the beaters, for they slide off the rims into the water.

Kriging is an interpolation technique for predicting unobserved responses at target locations from observed responses at specified locations. Kriging predictors are best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) and the precision of the BLUP is assessed by the mean square prediction error (MSPE), commonly known as the kriging variance. Both the BLUP and the MSPE depend on the covariance function describing the spatial correlation between locations and on specific parameters. The parameters are usually treated as known, whereas in practice they invariably have to be estimated and the empirical BLUP (that is, the EBLUP) so obtained. The empirical or estimated mean square prediction error (EMSPE), or the so called ?plug-in? kriging variance estimator, underestimates the true kriging variance of the EBLUP, at least in general. In this paper five estimators for the kriging variance of the EBLUP are considered and compared by means of a simulation study in which a Gaussian distribution for the responses, an exponential structure for the covariance function, and three levels of spatial correlation ? weak, moderate, and strong ? are adopted. The Prasad-Rao estimator obtained using restricted or residual maximum likelihood (REML) is recommended for moderate and strong spatial correlation and the Kacker-Harville estimator for weak correlation in the random fields.

This paper presents the results of a study on cellular acclimation of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans to sulfur biooxidation in terms of cells growth and changes in surface properties and morphologies of both cells and sulfur particles. The results showed that A. ferrooxidans cells were grown faster and demonstrated higher concentration in the soluble thiosulfate substrate than in nonsoluble hydrophobic S0 substrate. The results showed that A. ferrooxidans cells acclimated to the sulfur biooxidation by actively expressing some extracellular polymers substance and maybe some outer membrane proteins that modified the surface properties of both sulfur particles and the cells themselves. In addition, the results showed that the A. ferrooxidans cells were able to dynamically adsorb to or desorb from the surface of sulfur particles. The cells aggregating onto the S0 surface enhanced the use of S0 substrate by the bacteria cells. This mode may be one of the most important characteristics for the better growth and propagation of the cells in solid sulfur-containing media.

Recent hotel investment projects in China often involve very tight programmes for design and construction. An example given in this paper involves a 24-storey reinforced concrete hotel tower with 460 bedrooms and a 3-level podium commercial complex. The building is supported by relatively widely spaced columns and shear walls below which 88 number large diameter piers were excavated through fill, silty and bouldery clay on to dolerite and slate at depths between 15 to 3 0m below ground level. Whereas much experience has been accumulated in Hong Kong, hand-excavated pier foundation was only adopted for the first time in Dalian. This paper describes and discusses the various factors influencing the choice of the type and design of the foundation system. The criteria for determining appropriate founding levels are then explained. During installation, revisions to the acceptance procedure were made to cater for local conditions. Emphasis is placed on the role of the geotechnical engineer in making on-site decisions during construction. The advantage of the foundation system in accommodating on-site changes resulting from local complex ground conditions is demonstrated. The pier foundations were successfully completed ahead of programme.

Oxyfuel combustion is currently one of the principal technological options being considered for capturing carbon dioxide from pulverised coal power plants. In oxyfuel combustion, coal is burnt in a mixture of recycled flue gases and added oxygen instead of in air. In principle this yields a flue gas containing only carbon dioxide, water vapour and small amounts other impurities. Oxyfuel combustion is superficially similar to combustion in air, but there are inevitable differences. This paper describes ignition tests on pulverised coal suspensions using a suite of coals of different rank and from different countries of origin and over a range of oxygen and coal concentrations of interest for oxyfuel combustion. The ignition tests were carried out using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 20-litre explosion chamber. The purpose was to determine how easily the various coals ignite and burn in mixtures of O2 and CO2 compared to their combustion in air. The residual char volatile and ash contents for the ignition residues were measured using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), allowing Q factors (i.e., enhancement in apparent volatile yield due to higher heating rates and/or heterogeneous reactions) to be determined and compared. An ignition index has been derived from the explosion and char data. This index has been used to rank low volatile coals for ignition propensity in air. The results show that to obtain ignition and combustion comparable to that in air, the oxyfuel O2-CO2 gas mixture must contain over 30% O2. Keywords: CO2 capture, combustion, pyrolysis, oxyfuel.

"Cameco operates the high-grade McArthur River uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan, and is constructing the high-grade Cigar Lake uranium mine. Cameco has studied the concept of underground milling of high-grade uranium ore. Compared to conventional milling on surface, the underground milling scheme appears to offer significant cost savings and a lower environmental impact. The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr203. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 1.6 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, scope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider scopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

Diagrams of pc-pH for the complex ions concentration and pH value and -g- for activity coefficient and ionic strength ln±MnSOI4had been drew based on the thermodynamic principle of coordination chemistry and combined with Pitzer theory at 298.15K. The diagram of -g- indicated that -gincreased sharply from 0.0000 up to 1.2147 when I changed from 0.00 ln±MnSOIln4±MnSO4to 0.09; The increase of -gbecame slowly when I was more than 1.00 and less than 1.69; kept still when I ln±MnSOln4-g±MnSO4was more than 2.25 and less than 4.00. Diagrams of pc-pH illustrated that the minimum solubility of Mn(OH)2(s) increased with the increase of I, the pc increased from 6.5 to 5.5 when I increased from 0.00 to 4.00; The pH of the minimum solubility of Mn(OH)2(s) increased with the increase of I, the pH increased from 11.80 to 12.76 when I increased from 0.00 to 2.89, the pH kept still when I (I was less than 4.0) increased. There is single function relationship between the minimum solubility of Mn(OH)2(s) and relevant pH in different I.

PNEUFLOT® technology has been applied for the past 20 years in coal, ore and other minerals processing plants. During the last two years this technology has achieved a breakthrough with some 42 units being sold signifying a rising trend. »Humboldt Wedag Coal & Minerals Technology« has performed extensive research and development work over the last five years. The results of which were used to design a new fourth generation aerator. Humboldt Wedag, through its association with EKOF, can offer a holistic solution encompassing both flotation equipment and reagents. It is the only company in the world able to offer such a package. The association with EKOF strengthens the Humboldt Wedag product offering, especially as the company in-troduced pneumatic flotation cells to the South African market in the form of the PNEUFLOT®. Before starting pilot scale test work, a mineralogical analysis has to be carried out to determine the mineral com-position as well as the liberation grade. HW-CMT works together with independent institutes. Different reagent regimes can be tested in laboratory scale. Pilot machines, each packed in a 20? container, are available to carry out extensive test work at customers? processing plants. A group of engineers from HW-CMT is involved in the pilot test work. The flexible pilot machines are designed to cater for coal, ores and other minerals. The small feed rates of 7 ? 12 m³/h only means the pilot machines do not disturb the operation of process plants. Batch tests have to be carried out to determine the numbers of PNEU-FLOT® stages. New applications in iron ore, copper ore, platinum group minerals, rock phosphate and potash were suc-cessfully tested in the last three years. In applications where the feed material is very fine, PNEUFLOT® technology is able to achieve high recoveries with particle sizes where conventional technology failed.

The progressive development of underground mines frequently requires increased ventilation flow rates through mine shafts that were originally designed for lower rates. Where these shafts are equipped with conveyances running on rope guides, the higher air flow rates adversely affect the lateral motion of conveyances and could cause conveyances to collide with the shaft walls or with one another. Hence the safety impact of higher flow rates requires proper assessment. This can be undertaken by use of computer simulation models to predict the dynamic motion of the conveyances during hoisting. It can also be undertaken entirely by field testing, or using a combination of simulation and field testing. This paper discusses these techniques and makes cautionary remarks about setting an absolute generic maximum flow velocity for all shafts. "Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in flotation cell design, and one of the areas where attention is being focused is flotation in centrifugal fields which aims at increasing the flotation rates by forced bubble-particle contact.A new cycloflotation device was developed at Laurentian University and tested on the nickel ore of Falconbridge Limited in Sudbury. In comparison with conventional flotation, cycloflotation yielded at least seven times faster flotation rates in terms of the mass of solids floated per unit time per unit flotation volume, while producing concentrate grades similar to those of conventional flotation. These results, which were obtained with a bench-scale ""cyclofloat cell,"" suggest that cycloflotation has the potential of setting a new direction in flotation technology.IntroductionFroth flotation is no doubt the dominant separation technique in the mineral processing industry. Since its inception early in this century, much research effort has been and is still being expended on this process. The intent of this paper is to make mine operators and engineers aware of parameters which affect the loading behavior of passive roof support systems. The strength of a passive roof support element alone is not a meaningful measure of support performance. Passive roof support elements and the surrounding strata act as a system, responding to changes in the physical mine environment due to the extraction of coal and associated redistribution of stresses. The load- ing of a passive roof support element is a function of the stiffness of the roof support structure; a stiffer structure will react a higher load to a converging mine roof than will a more flexible structure. If the stiffness if the support structure is not properly designed, excessive loading will result due to the displacement of the mine roof, causing premature failure of the support. Ideally, the yield strength of a passive support needs to be no greater than that required to support the dead weight of the immediate mine roof, providing the post yield characteristics of the support are compatible with the irresistible convergence of the overburden strata and the support system continues to provide this resistance after reaching its yield load. Idealized design considerations for passive roof support systems in terms load-displacement characteristics discussed. The stiffness and yield characteristics of wood concrete cribbing, as determined controlled tests in the Bureau's Roof Simulator, are compared preliminary recommendations passive roof support utilization also provided.
