The cost and availability of iron ore and natural gas, government support, and proximity to the growing Southeast Asian market all contribute to the competitive position of the area. Owing to the lead-time required, this is an ideal time to develop a new project to supply semi-finished steel to Asia for rolling to a finished product. A project contracted now will start up in about three years, when the market should have recovered.

Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) is a prominent activity in the extractive industry: considering only gold, it produces about 20% of world market supply. Despite this fact, ASM is generally associated with negative aspects of its environmental impact, and operational research is generally neglected. This paper emphasizes the peculiarity of the drilling and blasting systems of small underground mines in selected South American Countries. Such Countries, while having large mineral deposits and well recognized large-scale mining activities, at the same time still present on their territory ASM activities that are archaic, highly inefficient and dangerous for the safety of its operators. This paper documents drilling and blasting activities from gold mining in Ecuador and Chile. First, are described the outdated and often non-rational techniques employed by miners, to provide a general framework of the current methods. Then, it is shown what can be improved and how the current methods can be modified. Finally, are shown some field applications and the comparisons of the results obtained. One case shows how blast pull efficiency can be increased of from 82% to 98% by changing non-rational applications of explosive products. Another case shows how, by rationalizing blast designs, drilling and blasting costs can be reduced by 9% per month, the advance by blasting increased by 29% and the blasting efficiency increased from 70% to 90%. Finally, it is concluded that examples of application show how operational improvements are easily applicable on the field, relying only on tools and resources of artisanal mining, but combining solid engineering bases with confidence-gain and respect for the experience of the miners.

Introduction More and more women engineers are joining the traditionally male mining industry. Are they successful? Do they encounter special problems? How do men in mining respond? How can the mining industry effectively use its female resources? What contributes to the success of a woman in mining? What can male engineers do to ease the entry of female professionals into the workforce? An STM survey conducted last spring provided some answers to these questions. All BS graduates in mining, mineral engineering, and extractive metallurgy from 1960-1979 were surveyed. Nearly 60% of the female graduates, from 17 universities, completed questionnaires. The women were asked why they chose mining, how they relate to predominantly male co-workers, what job skills they have gained, and what areas of work they most enjoy. They were also asked how problems of a two-career family are solved. Data were gathered on salaries, titles, specialties, and products handled. Respondents, assured of confidentiality, are identified only by title. Many male mining executives were also questioned for their advice to women in mining. Profile of the Survey Participant The "typical" female mining engineer works with coal, is employed by an operating company, feels she works very hard to prove her abilities, does not want to be treated as an anomaly, and someday wants to be an independent consultant. Of the respondents, 44% listed coal as the most familiar product, 12% said copper, and the rest listed products from industrial chemicals to oil. Titles varied widely but women managers are rarely found. However, the majority of the survey population graduated after 1976 and thus lacks substantial experience. Of 102 female graduates, only 25 graduated before 1977. Since then, there has been a steady increase. The American Association of Engineering Societies reported that in 1980 more than 100 degrees were awarded to women in minerals engineering. Education Highly Valued Twenty-two percent of the women surveyed had graduate degrees, 38% planned further education, and 12% listed a PhD as their goal. The majority of graduate degrees are in technical fields. There were only two MBAs. Five women intended to pursue law degrees, and one woman, with a mining engineering degree and an MBA, is a part-time law student. Along with advanced education, the women agree that production experience is needed for career advancement. However, only 28% of the women have worked in production. Many women, especially younger grads, commented that these are the toughest jobs to get. This is a universal complaint, from males as well as females, though women seem to encounter more opposition. Several women mentioned they were small or slight of build and managers tended to shy away from hiring them for production jobs. Two-Career Marriages The most difficult problem for two-career couples is relocation. Whose career takes priority? Fifty percent of the women said transfers or offers would be examined on a case-by-case basis, weighing pros and cons for both parties. The husband's career took priority with 47% of the women; their own careers, with 3%. These statistics conflict with comments from two employee relations managers. Both said most female engineers they've encountered are married to men who follow their wives' careers. Seventy per cent of the married respondents said their husbands were also engineers. Four said their husbands were engineers at the same company. Some male and female engineers met on the job; others joined the company as a "package deal." Both partners being engineers can ease relocation problems, since an area or company offering one spouse a job can often provide a spot for the other. A company may benefit by getting two new hires for the relocation costs of one. Most companies contacted have policies that allow married couples to work at the same division, but discouraged them from working in the same department. With 40% of today's marriages ending in divorce, one risk is that one or both parties may quit. One personnel executive said there were several couples, each spouse in a different discipline, who were work¬ing out very well at his division. However, he recognized the potential for problems if, for instance, one gets promoted and the other doesn't, or salary increases are unequal. The personnel executive said he has actively recruited married couples, and would again, were each person competent.

"In ports, piled berths are designed and constructed for berthing of ships with a finite draught. Piles in a bridge foundation also have a large free stand above scoured level. The piles of these structures have to withstand large horizontal forces imparted by the impact of the approaching vessels or due to longitudinal and transverse action in a bridge. It is also imperative that these piles have to project out of the dredged / scoured bed. These piles are normally designed as slender compression members subjected to bending also. They are subjected to vertical load tests for assessing the soil resistance. Lateral load tests, as a rule, are also stipulated. IS and IRC codes stipulate a deflection criteria for lateral load test to arrive at the capacity. These tests are usually conducted on a working pile by jacking out two piles. At the time of the test, pile will be free headed. But in service, piles are fixed head. There is a large difference in deflections between a fixed head and a free headed pile. Besides, a free headed pile will be subjected to a much higher bending moment than the fixed head one. This will put the working test pile under risk of breaking during the test. The problem is analyzed with case studies. INTRODUCTION Vertical capacity of piles is assessed by static formulae. This formula is based on the soil properties obtained from random soil exploration and laboratory and in-situ testing. Since soil is not a homogeneous medium, properties can vary. The design parameters taken for computations may be different from the ones at the interface of the pile with the soil. The best way is to find out is by a load test. The code IRC:78-2014 has rightly stated that initial load test is part of the design process. This is true with the vertical load test. But there are certain problems with the purpose and inference of the lateral load test. In both the tests the criteria for acceptance is the quantum of movement of the point of application of the load. In the former, the movement is vertical and depends more on the compression of the soil than the compressive strain in concrete. But in the latter, this movement is partly on account of the flexural rigidity of the pile and partly due to the horizontal compressibility of the soil. The role of rigidity of the pile is more when compressibility of the soil is higher. Lateral load test is done by jacking one pile against another because it is difficult to get an independent horizontal reaction. Please see Fig.1 Photo."

Toronto as a geographical area provides an exceptionally wide variety of subsoil stratiphication. Tunneling consequently required a very wide range of adaptabilities to meet its changing conditions. This discussion will provide a summary of work performed in both earth and rock formation using three of our recent works to describe a Contractor's experience. The general subsoil stratigraphy is known to consist of deposits laid down during the Illionian Glaciation followed by the Samgamon Interglacial Stage and finally the Wisconsin Glaciation. All these deposits are underlain by shale bedrock of the Dundas formation. As a whole the Dundas formation is predominantly a greyish blue, thinly bedded shale. The engineering characteristics of the shale vary considerably, however, between a blue clay (argillaceous) shale and a much lighter (in colour) silty and sometimes sandy (arenaceous) shale, and occasional limestone layers. The Illionian deposits are usually found to be layers of pebbly clay till and an overlaying layer of contorted varved-clay. These glacial deposits can be overlain by a thick layer of sandy silt to silty sand which is identified as the Samgamon Interglacial sediments. Because of the action of erosion the Wisconsin till sheets, many times separated by interstadial sands, can vary greatly in their number of layers from zero to three or more.

Steel and concrete piles and power-actuated hammers have developed almost entirely within the past 100 years. Prior to that time, piles were mostly timber, driven with a drop hammer or a maul. The Engineering News Formula ? for timber piles driven with a drop hammer at a factor of safety of six ? was promulgated by Wellington in 1888. Steel com­panies supplied fabricated and rolled shapes for piles in the early 1900's. The thin shell and then uncased concrete piles originated about that time. Now leads have become sophisticated to accurately spot a pile at any required batter. Hammers have grown to phenomenal size and vibratories are being accepted at full value.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) identified hearing loss as the most common job-related disease in the United States in its 1996 National Occupational Research Agenda. Previous studies by NIOSH have shown operators of surface drill rigs without cabs are commonly exposed to A-weighted sound levels exceeding 90 dB. During hammer-drilling, A-weighted sound levels exceeding 100 dB were recorded at the operator station. NIOSH collaborated with a local drilling company to design and install a partial cab between the operator and the drill steel in an effort to reduce the sound level at the operator station. Sound level measurements in the field show the partial cab reduces the A-weighted sound level by 5-9 dB at the operator’s left ear and 2-5 dB at the operator’s right ear while hammer-drilling. This paper will briefly discuss the preliminary design of a cab and the testing of materials for construction of the prototype. Explanation of the ideas behind the prototype design and fabrication will be covered. Finally, the field test method and results will be discussed in detail.

They are gone now. Gone like that long ago generation that gave them birth. The Homestake Mine, nestled in the northern Black Hills, closed in 2001 after 125 years, the longest run of any major American gold mine. The Homestake Mining Co., which guided its destiny for those many years, is gone too. It merged with Barrick Gold. The Hearst family, which guided the early destiny of both, has long since gone beyond its mining heritage and into the national and even international spotlight. The mine and the company passed from the scene with as little fanfare as heralded their birth, amid the Black Hills gold rush of the 1870s. They both grew into American mining legends, as did the town they sired and nurtured, Lead. In a real sense, the mine and the company symbolized one of the last links to a vanished world and a mining era.

"The Witwatersrand Basin is the heart of South Africa’a gold mining industry. The cluster of gold mines located in the Witwatersrand Basin generates a significant amount of mine tailings, which have adverse effects on the environment and ecological systems. In addition, disposal costs are very high. The exponential population growth in the Witwatersrand area has resulted in pressure on the reserves of traditional building materials. Quarrying for natural construction material is very expensive and damages the landscape. This work therefore examines the use of gold mine tailings in the production of bricks.Different mixing ratios of gold tailings, cement, and water were used. The resulting bricks were then cured in three different environments - sun dried, oven dried at 360°C, and cured in water for 24 hours. The bricks were then tested for unconfined compressive strength, water absorption, and weight loss. The results showed that the mixture with more cement than tailings had a compressive strength of approximately 530 kN/m2. It was also found that the best brick curing system was in a water environment. Bricks made from tailings cost more than conventional bricks because of the higher quantity of cement used, but the manufacturing process consumes less water. Overall, the results indicated that gold mine tailings have a high potential to substitute for the natural materials currently used in brickmaking.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc. "Wireless communication in the mineral processing environment is not as simple as it is in the home or office environment. The correct design of a wireless network in the mineral processing environment can offer a more flexible and lower cost installation than the transitional fiber networks. However with the flexibility of a wireless solution, also comes some limitations. By reviewing the plant requirements along with weighting the wireless benefits and limitations it is possible to design a network that combines the robustness of a wired solution with the mobility of a wireless solution. This paper addresses some wireless design considerations and it looks at some real life examples in the following areas: •,Meshed wireless network for high levels of redundancy •,Wireless instruments (such as HART, Modbus and others) •,Portable devices for mobile operators •,Network monitoring for plant personnel (it’s no longer just for IT people) INTRODUCTION Typical networks used in the mineral processing environment consist of a fiber network infrastructure with industrial switches used to connect the network devices. These fiber networks can be redundant or put into a ring topologies to offer a higher level of availability. Fiber networks have the benefits of: •,Immunity to noise from power and grounding issues •,Ability to span long distances (2km for multimode fiber and 20km for single mode fiber) •,Maintainable “off-the-shelf” technology Fiber networks however have some drawbacks, such as: •,Relativity high initial installation cost for cable trays, poles, trenches and pulling and termination of cable. •,Fixed geographic topology, adding future fiber drops may be challenging and expensive. •,Mobile users are not considered. Integrating a wireless network with a fiber network can offer the best of two worlds, a reliable high speed backbone for mission critical activities and a wireless network for remote applications and mobile users."

The Fifth International Heavy Minerals Conference (HMC) was held Oct. 16-19, 2005, at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort in Ponte Vedra, FL. With SME as sponsor, the 2005 conference marked the first time that the HMC was held in North America. The conference is held every two years and provides an important forum for professionals in the heavy minerals and related industries to meet and discuss issues related to heavy mineral exploration, mining, processing and marketing. Previous locations included Australia and South Africa. The conference consisted of technical presentations, field trips to heavy mineral operations, a trade show and social activities. It was appropriate that Ponte Vedra was selected as the location for the conference. Ponte Vedra, located on the Atlantic Coast 17 km (10 miles) southeast of Jacksonville, FL, is the birthplace of heavy minerals mining in North America. Ponte Vedra beaches were mined from 1916 to 1929 in what was then called Mineral City. Though Ponte Vedra is now a golf and beach resort, there are still four heavy mineral mines operating within an hour’s drive. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site.

Coal bumps are brittle, violent failures associated with high stresses and competent host strata. To study bump mechanisms, conditions in the vicinity of a deep longwall mining face in bump-prone strata were monitored using three discrete systems. First, a microseismic monitoring network recorded mining-induced seismic events throughout the mine and surrounding strata. Second, pressure variations and distributions on the longwall shield legs across the face were recorded. Last, tomography surveys imaged seismic transmission properties ahead of the face. Results from the three systems were correlated in an effort to increase understanding of mining-induced stress redistribution and bump potential. An initial, one-week study showed that the correlation between averaged tomogram values and seismically active areas had a coefficient of correlation (R) of 0.89. Further results of these studies demonstrate that the tomography system is capable of imaging heavy shield-leg loading and bump-prone conditions prior to them disrupting the face operations.

The twenty-fourth of a series of semiannual surveys pertaining to motor gasoline marketed in the United States was made by the Bureau of Mines in August, 1931, The first part of a report giving the results of that survey as they pertain to specification data is given in this paper. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will discuss the results off other determinations made on the samples, including octane number ratings on the individual samples (to be made by the Bureau of Standards) and results of the determination of gravity, color, doctor test, and "gum" content by the copper dish method and the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method. "Many power-based grinding models exist, and most operators are familiar with Fred Bond's ""third theory"". Bond's model is most commonly used to describe primary and secondary grinding to product sizes above, for example, 100 µm. Operators sometimes use Bond's equation to describe grinding in situations where it is not appropriate, such as fine grinding below 50 µm. Using an alternative model would be a better choice in this situation.Bond's equation is one in a large family of models. Related equations better suited to fine grinding include the “signature plot”, Von Rittinger's model and Charles' equation. These models have a similar form to Bond's and can be fit to industrial regrind mills and laboratory tests using the simple regression tools in the charts of computer spreadsheets. Operators will find that fine grinding calculations are both easier and more accurate when using the alternative equations to fit their regrind milling surveys or when performing laboratory regrind mill scale-up for plant design.None of these models are new: Charles' equation was published in 1957 and Von Rittinger's model was proposed in 1867. A quick refresh how to apply these equations can turn these oddities from the undergraduate curriculum into useful tools for plant optimization. They can be fit to any type of mill including stirred and tumbling ball mills.IntroductionBuilding a case for fine grind modelling requires reviewing some theory before building a framework for doing fine grinding calculations. The actual calculation procedure recommended is easy and can be applied by plant metallurgists. Don’t be frightened by the theory; the end result is reasonably simple.The observation that mineral breakage is related to the absorption of energy is usually attributed to Von Rittinger (1867). Lynch and Rowland (2005) describe that the ability to empirical test and calibrate energy models of breakage didn’t exist until the widespread adoption of electric motors in the mining industry during the 1930’s and 1949’s. A series of technical papers published by the Allis Chalmers company during the 1940’s demonstrate that they were attempting to do such a calibration using Von Rittinger’s model which is usually stated as: “the energy consumed in the size reduction is proportional to the area of new surface produced.”"

The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of a new 3-yr research program with three primary goals: 1) understanding controls on metal concentrations in the lakes; 2) using mesocosms to test a variety of remediation strategies; and 3) verifying and improving an existing coupled physical-geochemical model with the goal of improving predictions of pit lake water quality. Initial data from two summer surveys in the Main Zone pit lake reveal elevated dissolved metal concentrations (e.g. [Zn] as high as 800 µg/L) present in a two-meter-deep mixed layer, and elevated particulate metal concentrations towards the bottom of the water column. Hydroxide sludge, a byproduct of ARD treatment, is being discharged to the surface waters of the Main Zone pit lake. The sludge sinks rapidly to the lake bottom, leading to deep waters with elevated levels of dissolved O2 and total metals. By contrast, the deep waters of the proximal Waterline pit lake are mildly reducing, manifested by depletion of O2 and elevated levels of dissolved Fe. These reducing conditions have led to elevated levels of As (up to 1500 µg/L) in Waterline pit deep waters. The contrasting behavior of these two pit lakes, as well as the processes controlling metal concentrations in the lakes, will be discussed.

The immediate roof at the test site consisted of laminated clay shale that is likely to be susceptible to weathering. With seasonal dry-wet cycles in the mine ventilation air, the roof in the intake air would deteriorate and lose integrity over time. In many instances, the weathering-prone roof would gradually scale off piece by piece between bolts and over the entry corners. In some long-term entries, roof weathering could develop up to 2-3 ft deep with columns of bolted roof hanging under the upper intact roof. If wire mesh is used, the roof bags down and reduces the entry height, and the weight of the bagged roof tends to pull the bolts out and poses a safety hazard. An effective measure is always sought to support this type of weak roof that is sensitive to moisture degradation. One solution is to seal the roof shortly after entry development to prevent moisture penetration so that roof integrity can be maintained for the long term. In this application, a polymer-based sealing material was tested in the Rockspring mine for weathering protection and reinforcement. The material is a one-component polymer powder for spray application onto the roof and rib. The sealant material is mixed with water in the spraying nozzle to apply to the roof and rib as a paste. The product sets within 5-10 minutes and forms a membrane as thin as about 1/8-in. The membrane will quickly develop tensile and bonding strength within minutes and completely cure within a few days. Through sealing, bonding and lateral reinforcement, the integrity of the weak roof can be maintained. The material has been tried in a long-term evaluation over several months in a set of main entries in the Rockspring mine owned and operated by Rockspring Development, Inc., affiliate of Foundation Coal. Preliminary evaluation has shown that the material is an effective and economical solution to ensuring the long-term stability of weathering-prone roof.

Over the past twenty years the 3 MW DC arc furnace at MEFOS has been frequently used for development of new processes. These processes include recovery of valuable metals from slag, sludge and dust from steel and other metallurgical industry, treatment of ashes from power plant and incinerators, smelting reduction of minerals and zinc recovery from EAF dust. The process characteristics of the DC arc furnace operation in terms of: ? selective reduction, ? total reduction, ? process stability and flexibility, ? dust carry-over, ? thermodynamic conditions provided in the hot spot area, ? precision in composing slag products These are analysed and described in this paper based on technical results from selected test campaigns over the years and thermodynamic considerations. The electromagnetic properties of DC arcs beneath the electrode have been studied by CFD simulation. The calculated result enables us to understand some interesting technical phenomena observed. The heat balance has also been considered based on data obtained from test campaigns and heat balance calculation.

Vitrinite reflectance forms the basis of a study of coal rank variation in two areas of the Upper Hunter Valley, New South Wales, on the northern margin of the Sydney Basin. A selective analysis procedure, based on samples rom twenty-two boreholes, has resulted in a small range of reflectance values for each sample and consequently a high degree of significance for calculated mean values. The patterns of rank distribution derived from these data have facilitated an interpretation of the rclative timing of coalilication and deformation in each area.This study provides support for the suggestion by several authors that there were at least two periods of folding in the tJpper Hunter Valley. In the Hebden-Ravensworth area, minor folding took place after most of the coalilication was completed.To the west, in the region of the Muswellbrook Anticline, coalification occurred during or after the formation of this major structure. Tectonic instability during deposition of the Singleton Super-Group, in the region of the Hunter-Thrust on the basin margin, is evidenced by rank variation suggesting differential subsidence across this zone.

CODELCO is considering the implementation of high-density tailings management at the Chuquicamata mine in northern Chile for its long term disposal plan. To achieve this, CODELCO commissioned the design, construction, and operation of a 70 t/d pilot plant, fed by existing tailings. The testing programme was completed in May 2011, and consisted of laboratory rheological and characterization assessments, pipe loop testing, beaching trials, and analyses of deposition behaviour for solid contents ranging from 57?68% (w/w). This paper describes the characteristics of the pilot plant, the testing programme, the beach trial analyses, and the resulting beach profile predictions based on the stream power theory. CODELCO also used other predictive beach slope methods, such as the equilibrium slope concept, which are not discussed in this paper. The final beach profile for design will be selected after an expert analysis of all methods has been completed.
