The choice of a design concept for a bridge foundation is guided by various factors; several of these factors are indeed of technical origin, like the environmental conditions in a broad sense, but others non technical factors may also have a profound impact on the final design concept. The foundations solutions adopted for the Rion Antirion bridge are described and an attempt is made to pinpoint the major factors that have guided the final choices. The Rion Antirion bridge is exemplar in that respect: the foundation concept combines the simplicity of capacity design, the conceptual facility of construction and enhances the foundation safety. The design of these foundations was a very challenging task which required full cooperation and close interaction with all the parties involved: concessionaire, contractor, designers and design checker.

Geological mapping in various parts of Australia is revealing a number of regional associations of mineralizations with particular persistent stratigraphic horizons. Such associations have been found in the Broken Hill district of New South Wales, in the Nairne district of South Australia, in the Mount Isa district of Queensland, and in the Cloncurry district of Queensland. The question has arisen as to whether such mineralizations are of sedimentary origin, syngenetic with the enclosing formation, or whether they are of epigenetic origin, and reflect the selective hydrothermal mineralization of favourable beds on a regional scale.The purpose of this investigation is to test the use of sulphur-selenium ratios as an objective method of distinguishing between suphide deposits or sedimentary or supergene origin, and sulphide deposits of hydrothermal origin, with particular application to the districts mentioned. At the same time much data has been accumulated as to the selenium content of Australian sulphide ores. The possible use of sulphur-selenium ratios for this purpose was first demonstrated by Goldschmidt and his coworkers (1933; 1935), and later by Carstens (1941). Goldschmidt and Strock (1935) found that pyrite of sedimentary origin had a sulphur : selenium ratio of the order of 200,000 or more, whereas pyrite of hydrothermal origin had a sulphur: selenium ratio of 10,000 to 20,000. Carstensfound that sedimentary pyrite deposits in Norway contained less than 1 g. Se per ton, whereas hydrothermal pyrite deposits contained 20 to 30 g. per ton.

"In 2002, Titanium Corporation Inc. focused its attention on the development of a process for the recovery of valuable heavy minerals, including zircon and titanium bearing minerals from oil sands froth treatment tailings. The development of a process flowsheet to recover the titanium and zircon minerals from the Athabasca oil sand tailings has evolved through many laboratory, bench and pilot scale iterations.Initial development work focused on so-called ‘beach sand’ material, which is tailings material deposited over a period of time close to the tailings pipe discharge. The derived process flowsheet primarily consisted of gravity concentration stages, which is typical of all mineral sands operations. Titanium Corporation’s business plan calls for the utilization of tailings directly from the tailings pipeline – the process developed around the beach material is therefore risky as it differs from the live tailings in a number of aspects, with the effects on the process unknown. Titanium Corporation successfully obtained an intermediate product through a ‘bulk sampling plant’ coupled directly to an Oil Sands operator’s froth treatment tailings pipeline, during the summer of 2005. Subsequent further processing of this material resulted in poor separation or concentration of the heavy minerals due to a number of reasons. A more effective process flowsheet had to be developed.The newly derived process is basically a marriage between mineral sands technology and oil sands technology that can economically concentrate and recover the heavy minerals and entails the incorporation of a flotation process that takes advantage of the entrained bitumen in the feed to separate the heavy mineral fraction from the quartz gangue This paper will describe the newly derived process as well as the successful results of a subsequent on-site concentrator pilot campaign completed during the 3rd Quarter of 2006."

With increasing depth, stresses and stress phenomena are becoming more important considerations in Australian coal mining.A large number of compressive and tensile strength tests was made on coal and rock cubes cut from samples taken in various Australian collieries. In addition, an empirical impact strength test was carriedout on fragments of the same samples, to obtain a correlation with compressive strength.In one colliery, flat-jack measurements were taken to assess stresses in coal ribs and in the roof.INTRODUCTIONBy world standards, some of the New South Wales collieries are approaching depths of cover considered a maximum for bord and pillar the normal Australian coal mining method. Several South Coast collieries are winning coal at depths of about 1500 ft., and future operations are being planned at deeper cover. Some areas of these deep workings produce considerable quantities of seam gas.Phenomena associated with high stress and copious gas under pressure in the seam violent phenoma presenting a danger and a nuisance in mine working - have occasionally occurred, and the phenomena are being investigated as a whole (Hargraves, 1958), and separately as a gas problem (Bolt and Innes, 1959; Hargraves, 1962) and as a stress problem. THE object that the writer has mainly in view in presenting this paper is to draw the attention of those connected with the technical side of the industry to the unsatisfactory and by no means up-to-date methods employed in estimating the tin contents of an ore. At the same time, what is regarded, from the writer's personal experience, as a satisfactory and reliable method is explained in detail. It is a curious fact that for the last 25 years tin·assay methods have made little or no advance, while those now in general use ill connection with copper and lead ores can scarcely be compared with those then obtaining, so greatly have they been improved upon. Though it. is not altogether expected that the method herein advocated will at once meet with general approval, the writer hopes the resultant discussion may bring out points that have hitherto escaped detection.FIRE METHODSThe old Cornish method of smelting with anthracite is now obsolete. "ABSTRACTThe city of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, is historically dominated by houses and three to five storey buildings.The geology in and around the city is such that even very light buildings need to be supported onpiles. The recent increase of the Bolivian economy, notably that of Santa Cruz, has created a demandfor new residential as well as office and industrial buildings, which mostly consist of multi-storey orhigh-rise buildings with significantly larger foundation loads. Foundation piles have become largerand longer, and the load on individual piles is increased. The development has resulted in an increasein the demand for more sophisticated design and construction methods and stricter approach toverifying the quality of the construction processes and results.This paper describes to geology of the Santa Cruz region and how the geotechnical conditions areconsidered in the design and construction of piled foundations. The improvement of past constructionand design techniques, based mostly on bored piles constructed with bentonite slurry, is beingreplaced with new methods of constructing bored piles, e.g. the Full Displacement Pile (FDP) andincorporation of techniques such as enlarging the pile toe, e.g., with the Expander Body. This paperpresents the results of several full-scale tests and discusses the incorporation of the test results indesign and construction.1 GEOLOGY OF THE REGIONSanta Cruz de la Sierra is located in the eastern lowlands and sub-Andean zone of Bolivia, SouthAmerica. The area lies at an elevation of about +400 m and the geology is a Paleozoic (250 millionyears old) sedimentary basin. The soils of interest to civil engineering construction are quaternarywith the dominant minerals being calcite, silica and feldspar. The main agent is the Piray River and itstributaries. Their past meandering over the area has resulted in a sedimentation-erosionsedimentationprocess and a profile dominated by fine to medium sands with intermittent layers ofclay or clayey sand. With increasing distance from the river, the clay-containing layers are thicker.Fig.1.- View of Bolivia with location of Santa Cruz and map of Santa CruzThe upper about 15 to 18 m thick part of the profile consists of normally consolidated layers of clays,silts, sands, in various combination and thickness. Below, the soil is more homogeneous and consistsmostly of sand and gravel. The groundwater table lies typically at a depth of about 6 m in the highestpart of the city and at about 1 to 3 m depth in the lowest part of the city."

The Grand Isle sulfur mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, La. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Co. by the State of Louisiana which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the U.S. Department of the Interior after passage of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. The sulfur deposit was discovered in 1949 when Humble Oil & Refining Co. penetrated more than 200 ft of sulfur-bearing limestone in a zone between 1813 and 2075 ft below sea level. In 1954, Humble drilled ten more sulfur prospect holes, eight of which encountered sulfur ore. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Co. acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Co, the sulfur rights underlying the tracts, and the actual design of the installation began the same month. The first structural contract was awarded in December 1957 and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction has been completed and production by the Frasch process commenced in April 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30 million, of which $8 million is the extra cost incurred by the necessity of offshore operations. More than $22 million was expended before production was started. GEOLOGY OF DEPOSIT Grand Isle is the third largest sulfur deposit in the U.S. The orebody embraces several hundred acres, but its outer limits are yet to be defined to the northeast, east, and south. Most Gulf Coast sulfur deposits occur in a caprock mantle of calcite (referred to as limestone), anhydrite, and occasionally gypsum, which covers the apex of an intrusive mass of salt. Commercial quantities of sulfur are usually confined to the calcite or limestone member. Most often such limestone is completely enclosed by dense anhydrite below and impervious sediments above, which effectively form a closed reservoir. The depth of the Grand Isle orebody ranges from 1800 ft to 2500 ft below sea level. Within the present boundary, the sulfur-bearing limestone varies in thickness from 220 ft to 425 ft, while the sulfur content varies an average of about 15 pct in the leanest hole to an average of about 30 pct in the richest. Rock containing less than 5 pct sulfur is not classed as ore, and holes assaying less than 20,-000 long tons per acre of sulfur in place are not considered commercial offshore. The sulfur enrich-

The utilization of silica particles originated in rice husks as reinforcements of magnesium composites was discussed. By using the solid state reaction of rice husk silica particles with magnesium powder, P/M magnesium based composites dispersed with the magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) and magnesium oxide (MgO) were fabricated. High-purity silica particles were originated from rice husks, one of the major agricultural wastes, via the citric acid leaching treatment and combustion in air. The effects of the silica particle characteristics such as size, crystalline and porous structures, on the reactivity of silica and magnesium to synthesize Mg2Si intermetallic were discussed. Amorphous silica was more useful for this reaction than crystalline one. The reactivity of rice husk silica was superior to that of the conventional mineral silica particles because of not only its amorphous structure but the larger specific surface area due to their pore structures. In the case of the green compact of the mixture of the rice husk silica and Mg powder, the silica particle size was not effective on the reactivity because the coarse particles were fractured into fine ones by cold compaction. The distribution of Mg2Si intermetallics of magnesium powder composites consolidated by SPS process was investigated by XRD and SEM-EDS analysis. Their mechanical and physical properties were also evaluated in detail.

Despite the recovery of approximately six million ounces of alluvial gold from the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand during the last 140 years, a great deal of this having been obtained via sluice boxes and riffle tables, there has been little advance in riffle table technology during this period. In this paper contemporary riffle table design and current operational practices are examined. Studies of gold loss to undersize tailings are described. In addition recommendations derived from recent research carried out in North America are contrasted with gold saving strategies adopted by West Coast miners.

About 200 M tons of coal were imported into Japan in 2007 and Indonesia was its second largest exporter, accounting for about 30 M tons (12% of the total imported coal). Indonesia produced about 200 M tons of coal, about 75% of which was exported in 2007. As the Indonesian government has decided on an energy policy wherein 33% of the country?s primary energy demand will be met by coal by the year 2025, the domestic demand for coal has increased dramatically in recent years. Over 99% of the coal produced in Indonesia comes from surface mines. However, the conditions of surface mines are worsening each year: the stripping ratio is increasing, approaching the economic ratio, and the infrastructure for coal from inland mining areas is insufficient for such intense mining operations. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. However, mining engineers and/or miners in Indonesia do not have a lot of experiences, expertise and know-how concerning the plans and operations of an underground coal mine. In addition, the industry faces a lot of problems which include poor conditions such as a steep coal seam, groundwater problem, stability of highwall, etc. Under these situations, a mine targeted in this research attempts to develop a new underground mine from an open-cut highwall because the stripping ratio in the surface mining area has almost reached the limitation of economic value. This paper discusses the possible development of a new underground coal mine from an open-cut highwall by means of field observation and numerical analysis.

Lonmin, earlier than any other primary platinum producer, had to deal with the concentrating and smelting of UG2-rich ores and concentrates respectively. Smelting was performed at a fairly modest scale compared to the company's industry peers in the platinum group metals (PGMs) industry, and was focused on smelting concentrates obtained through low mass pulls while still maintaining high recoveries at its concentrators. Lonmin gradually smelted larger quantities of UG2 concentrates. Initially two 2.3 MW Infurnco furnaces were commissioned in 1982, followed by three 5 MW circular 3-electrode Pyromet furnaces in 1991. Deep electrode immersions and moderately high hearth power densities were used in all the designs. Lonmin decided to continue with circular furnace technology when it planned its new high-intensity No. 1 Furnace. Neither Lonmin nor the technology supplier and EPCM company foresaw the challenges that scale-up would bring when applied to the smelting of UG2-rich concentrate blends. Superimposed on the high chromite content, was the low base-metal loading, mineralogical difficulties, and fine particle size that resulted from milling of all concentrates (especially UG2 and recycle materials within the smelter). Through a process of fundamental diagnoses of furnace run-outs and wear patterns observed during repairs, the main challenges operating this high-intensity furnace were identified as sulphur vapour corrosion of the copper coolers, uneven and unpredicted movements of refractory bricks with associated copper cooler lift and matte tapblock movement, the formation of three-phase 'mushy' zones, high refractory and taphole wear rates, uncertainty in matte level and associated insufficient matte buffer height, and high furnace operating temperatures. These factors seldom worked in isolation and will be explored in more detail in the paper. The variability in furnace feed characteristics led Lonmin to redesign Furnace No. 1, to invest in backup furnace capacity, and to invest in improved monitoring and control. These improvements consisted of online and high-frequency off-line monitoring of feed chemistry and mineralogy, online pressure monitoring of water-cooled circuits, an alternative matte liquid level measurement in the furnace, and electrode immersion estimation. Improvements were also made at the converters by installing and utilizing optical spectral analysis of the converter flame to characterize converter behaviour and achieve the desired iron end-point for white matte. This paper also briefly discusses the current and future expansion plans, as well as ancillary operations at the smelter such as flue-gas handling and materials handling.

"Currently mine process studies and geochemical waste characterisation are considered as two interdependent studies, necessary for the development of the mine and inclusion in the environmental impact statement (EIS). Geochemical waste characterisation will utilise the simulated tailings produced by the mine process studies team to understand the behaviour of the tailings, but the two teams rarely integrate these to develop a coherent and agreed final design.Thorough mine waste geochemical assessments can develop processes to minimise environmental harm, resulting in substantial savings in the decommissioning, closure and rehabilitation phases, and may also be able to address changes in mineral processing methods that can result in substantial savings in process inputs, or even recovery of metal concentrates.Based on geochemical waste characterisation, the full cost of waste management can be calculated and incorporated into the costing of milling.  This allows for a more effective evaluation of the metallurgy.  A number of examples are presented in which substantial improvements have been made from the collaboration of both the metallurgical and geochemical teams during planning and the metallurgical team and environmental team during operations.*This paper is only available for individual download. "The San Nicolás deposit is a complex fine grained polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit located in central Mexico.Metallurgical testwork was carried out in 1999 and 2000 to develop a flowsheet. During the course of the metallurgical testwork it became evident that it would be impossible to develop an accurate head gradehecovery based model for the projection of metallurgy. It was suspected that variability in mineral texture was a predominate factor affecting metallurgy. For this reason it was decided to evaluate the applicability of QEM*SEM technology to this test program.This paper summarizes the metallurgical testwork and describes the evaluation and subsequent application of the QEM*SEM technology to characterize the mineral texture throughout the deposit. Finally it is shown how the QEM*SEM data are used in the mine block model to project the metallurgy.The QEM*SEM (Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy) is an automated image analysis system developed by CSRO which provides quantitative numerical estimates of the compositional and textural properties of the mineral suite which govern the concentration process.INTRODUCTIONThe San Nicolás deposit, was discovered in 1997 through the application of geological and geophysical techniques. In this paper is presented a review of the changes that have taken place in certain Canadian non-metallic mineral industries since 1909. The fifteen-year period 1909 to 1923, inclusive, has been selected for two reasons. In the first place, statistical treatment of the subject under review has been nearly uniform throughout the period. In the second place, this decade and a half is itself further subdivisible into three well marked quinquennial periods, the middle one covering the period of the great war when industrial conditions were greatly disturbed. It then becomes possible to institute certain comparisons between equal periods before and after the war disturbances. The items selected for inclusion in this review are certain of the more important members of that class of minerals usually grouped together under the heading of non-metallics. They are all minerals of which Canada is known to possess important resources, and which are indispensable to many of our greatest manufacturing industries.

Very few of those occupied in pursuits other than mining have any conception of the extent of boring operations that have been carried out on the gold and coal fields of Victoria, or of the valuable and definite knowledge obtainable by such means. The subject comprises various branches, which it will be necessary to describe in detail. The three main divisions are The Administrative, which includes all financial work and general management. The Professional, dealing with topographical and geological work necessary before any scheme of boring can be laid out, the preparation of plans, the inspection of cores obtained from bore holes, the examination of diamonds, etc. The Mechanical Branch, dealing with the drilling machinery, setting of diamonds, maintenance of stores, etc. In 1877, the Goverpment of Victoria decided to assist in prospecting the mineral resources of the colony by the aid of diamond drill boring, and for that purpose, a vote of £5,000 was passed, with which were purchased three diamond dulls, an American type being adopted.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. This will be the 21st Annual National Mining Museum and Induction Banquet. The four inductees are Lew Eklund, 76, Carrie Jane Billings Everson (1843-1914), ?Colonel? William C. Greene (1851-1911) and Arthur L. Hawkesworth (1860-1905). Lew Eklund founded Eklund Drilling that is now based in Elko, NV. He invented many designs that play a major role in today?s mining industry. His Cyclo Blower and various sampling devices he designed helped to revolutionize gold deposit exploration by allowing mining companies to effectively sample microscopic gold. Carrie Jane Billings Everson discovered and proved a method for bulk oil flotation concentration of mineral ores, the precursor to modern froth flotation methods of minerals concentration. She patented her process in 1886. In the early 1890s, coworkers built and operated demonstration plants incorporating her bulk oil flotation process. ?Colonel? William C. Greene was responsible for the development of the great copper mining properties of Cananea, Mexico. In seven years, he went from ragged cattleman and adventurer to the greatest captain of industry the borderlands have ever seen. Arthur L. Hawkesworth was a master mechanic for Anaconda Copper. He invented the detachable drill bit. His invention generated tremendous savings for the mining industry in time, in dollars and in safer operating conditions underground. His bit?s long lasting contribution to improved mine economics is immeasurable. The 21st Annual National Mining Museum and Induction Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The inductions will bring to 201 the number of mining ?greats? whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

Mesothermal quartz lodes in Paleozoic Greenland Group metasediments of the Reefton area have produced 67 t of gold up to 1951, and recent exploration has identified new gold resources in several deposits, including the largest past producers, Blackwater and Globe Progress. The metasediments consist of alternating sandstone and argillite, metamorphosed to lower greenschist facies and hydrothermally altered near the quartz lodes. We examined and sampled drill core from four prospects, Globe Progress, General Gordon, Merrijigs and Blackwater, to determine the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal alteration in the sandstone units. The sandstones are feldspathic litharenites averaging Q65, FlO and R25, with detrital grains of quartz, feldspar, rock fragments, muscovite, biotite (mostly altered to chlorite), and trace quantities of graphite, apatite, zircon, tourmaline and titanite. Hydrothermal alteration has developed a secondary mineral assemblage of K-mica (muscovite, sericite and illite), carbonate, chlorite, pyrite, arsenopyrite and limonite. The abundance of secondary chlorite is greater at Blackwater than at the other locations studied. Features in the sediments associated with increasing hydrothermal alteration towards quartz lodes include, the development and increasing intensity of colour bleaching and carbonate spotting, increasing quantities of disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite, and the appearance and increasing quantity and size of thin carbonate, quartz and sulphide veins. This is accompanied by increasing concentrations of sulphur, arsenic and antimony as shown in assays, and of volatiles (loss on ignition) and iron as seen in XRF analyses. We were unable to identify consistent trends in the behaviour of potassium, sodium, and calcium that are exhibited by similar mesothermal quartz lode deposits inVictoria, Australia.

Hot briquetting is a reliable, fully developed industrial concept for the passivation of direct reduced iron produced with the various processes of direct reduction. During hot briquetting, the large specific surface area of direct reduced iron is drastically reduced, and therefore the well-known problems caused by reoxidation and overheating are avoided. Even the shipping instructions published by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) confirm that Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) can be handled and shipped without special precautions. From the mid-1970s until today, after extensive pilot testing of the technology, a number of industrial plants for the hot briquetting of direct reduced iron have gone into operation. Additional hot briquetting plants for already established but also for new direct reduction processes are tinder construction or in different stages of planning. This paper describes the characteristics of HBI and its current industrial application for various Direct Reduction Processes.

A new comprehensive insitu instrumentation technique named this RCC Method has been developed for rapid assessment and improvement of the structural stability of underground openings. When applied to tunnel construction, the degree of present and prospective safety of underground openings can be determined in quantitative terms within 10 to 20 minutes of microcreep observation. When applied to mining, roofs and floors can be stabilized by controlling the stress conditions. This stress control method has eliminated the need for intensive roof bolting and extensive floor renewal in all cases where it was applied. Use of this technique is illustrated by field examples from the Seikan Undersea Tunnel of Japan and deep potash mining in Canada. NEW INSTRUMENTATION TECHNIQUE: THE RCC METHOD Failure problems in underground excavation usually arise in weak non-elastic grounds where conventional rock mechanics theories of elasticity are not only useless but also misleading. Presently, discontinuity planes in the ground are being considered a factor in assessing these failure problems, and while this development is interesting academically, it is not of much use in actual excavation work, where it is nearly impossible to identify and quantize all existing planes of discontinuity. Even if such an extraordinary task could be accomplished at an underground excavation site, effective use of the data would be difficult and impractical for rapid excavation work, with the possible exception of rare cases of ideally elastic ground.
