The efficient management of the distribution of goods and services is important throughout the minerals industry. From the scheduling of processing plant operations, to the routing of work crews in mines, to the planning of product development, vast amounts of time, energy, and money are wasted due to poor planning and scheduling. Thus, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating computational algorithms that can be used to minimize the economic losses related to scheduling and allocating resources. Although there is commercial software available for tackling many scheduling problems, there has been little relief provided for solving the difficult traveling salesman with time windows problem (TSTW). The TSTW problem is a "derivative" of the classic traveling salesman problem, and can be used to minimize the distance traveled by vehicles or personnel to visit all points on a tour, with the additional constraint that each point on the tour must be visited within a specified time window. This paper is a survey of published work in which genetic algorithms have been used to efficiently solve the traveling salesman problem and its more difficult derivative, the TSTW problem. A genetic algorithm is a search algorithm based on the mechanics of natural genetics, and has been used to solve a broad spectrum of engineering optimization problems. Results indicate that the versatility, searching power, and simplicity of genetic algorithms can be used to provide substantial improvement in the area of scheduling and resource allocation.

This work presents design features of an innovative in-line mixing helical (coiled) reactor for flocculation and flotation as a solid-liquid separation process for suspended particles (including liquid droplets). The device has been named flocs generator reactor (FGR), a compact system whereby the flocculation of particles is assisted by the kinetic energy transfer from the hydraulic flow through the reactor and/or by the injection of microbubbles (30 - 70 ¦m). The flow mixing presented a plug flow regime with a low dispersion degree, promoting the required hydrodynamic conditions to disperse the polymer flocculant (cationic polyacrylamide) and to generate æstrongÆ flocs of Fe(OH)3 or clays (as colloidal model systems) with aggregation using an anionic polymer, Al2(SO4)3 and poly aluminium chloride (PAC), and oil emulsions destabilisation with a high molecular weight cationic polymer. The solid-liquid separation of the flocs was then achieved either by settling or by flotation with microbubbles. This paper discusses advances in this new in-line flocculation-rapid flotation device to remove æaerated aggregatesÆ, aggregates with entrained and entrapped bubbles. Studies were carried out with different models of FGRs (varying the length:volume ratio) and process efficiency (mainly kinetics) evaluated as a function of polymer concentration and some operating parameters, namely, feed flow-rate, air:solids ratio and residence time. Results showed that the aerated flocs are readily floated with rising rates in the order of 120 mh-1, values higher than those obtained for the settling of the non-aerated flocs (18 - 24 mh-1). The FGR requires short residence times and generates dense, well structured flocs (with a mass fractal dimension, dF of about three) which withstand high shear forces. Mechanisms involved appear to include small bubble formation and their rapid occlusion (entrapment) within flocs, nucleation of bubbles at floc/water interfaces, polymer coiling as a result of æsalting outÆ effects at the aqueous/air interface and plug flow type of mixing (flocculation). Successful examples of emulsified oil and solids removal from water are shown and because in all cases high efficiencies were obtained (>90 per cent removal). Due to the high process efficiency and high loading capacity shown, the FGR appears to have good potential as an in-line flotation-separator device in applications requiring high rate solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separations.

Twenty-two samples of West Virginia coals were carbonized at 9000 C by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Eighteen samples represented the Coa1burg, No. 2 Gas, No. 2 Gas and Peerless, Powellton, Eagle, Big Eagle, Lower Eagle, Sewell, Fire Creek, and Pocahontas No.6 beds in Fayette County, and four samples represented the Sewell and Fire Creek beds in Greenbrier County. Expansion characteristics of the majority of samples were determined in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. Chemical analyses were determined for all coals. The coals in Fayette County are high-volatile A, medium-volatile, and low-volatile in rank, and the Greenbrier coals are medium-volatile in rank. Most of the coals are chemically suitable for metallurgical coking. All coke strength indices are within acceptable limits for metallurgical coking coals. All the high-volatile A coals contracted and the medium-and low-volatile coals expanded in the sole-heated oven expansion test.

Buoyant levels of world economic growth and recovery in intensity of metals usage suggest that demand for minerals will remain relatively strong into the 1990's. Supply constraints, low stock to use ratios, financial and political factors imply lower elasticities of supply for minerals in the future. The outlook for minerals and metals prices from a pro-ducers viewpoint is, accordingly, promising.The recent recovery in world minerals prices, following strong growth in the world economy over the last few years, makes it appropriate to consider the structural forces at work in the formation of world demand and supply of minerals. This paper will review past trends and consider some of the main economic issues facing the mining industry in the 1990's.

L?arrivée de nouvelles technologies sur le marché des foreuses portables combinée au besoin des mines à mieux consommer l?énergie électrique ont permis d?identifier le potentiel de deux nouveaux type de foreuses présentement utilisées en Afrique du Sud, à savoir les foreuses électriques et les foreuses hydrauliques actionnées à l?eau. Grâce à la collaboration de mines Niobec et Géant Dormant de Cambior Inc., ainsi que d?Hydro-Québec, le potentiel réel d?économie énergétique des foreuses portables hydrauliques et électriques par rapport aux foreuses conventionnelles à air comprimé a été évalué pour des roches dures et moles. Ainsi, cet article a pour objectif d faire ressortir ces potentiels d?économie énergétiques. En outre, les résultats pour une mine mécanisée et une autre mine de type filonien, dans lesquelles on retrouve des conditions de terrain différentes, seront présentés. Les résultats montrent un potentiel d?économie énergétique d?environ 70% pour la foreuse électrique et d?environ 50% pour la foreuse actionnée à l?eau. Ces résultats montrent qu?il est possible d?obtenir une meilleure efficacité énergétique par mètre foré. Ainsi, il apparaît maintenant intéressant de poursuivre les travaux de développement des deux technologies pour les applications de forage vertical et de tensionnement des boulons, et de viser à accroitre le taux de pénétration de la foreuse électrique pour le rendre équivalent à celui de la foreuse à air comprimé.

I DESIRE to make it perfectly clear at the outset that I fully realize the hazardous nature of any attempt to estimate the quantity of iron-ore or any other mineral in the ground. I should not have had the temerity to venture upon an inventory of the iron-ore supplies of the United States except for the requirements of the Conservation Commission. During the preparation of this inventory I have been impressed by the wide diversity in estimates of those best qualified to. hold an opinion, and I am therefore prepared in advance for criticism of my figures. Inasmuch as this report was prepared in large part for unprofessional readers, I considered it necessary to classify and describe the commercial iron-ores in a somewhat elementary manner, in order to explain the reasons for the large element of uncertainty in the estimates. I have therefore given a chemical and a geological classification of iron-ores, which place the commercial deposits in six classes: (1) magmatic segregations in basic igneous rocks; (2) contact-deposits formed in connection with igneous intrusions; (3) concentration-deposits; (4) replacement-deposits; (5) bedded-deposits, and (6) gossan-deposits. The iron-ores are further distinguished under two classes available and not available. This classification is in large measure arbitrary, and it, is evident that it will vary front time to time. In the available class are placed those ores which can be worked at a profit under conditions essentially as they exist at present. Since it depends wholly on the question of costs, the various factors which affect cost will determine the classification of any particular deposit. One of the most attractive subjects for technical writers is the gigantic industry of the manufacture of sulphuric acid. This is no doubt, natural when we take into account that it has grown in this country during the past twenty years, from a production of 60,000 tons in the year 1867, to that of nearly 450,000 tons in 1887. We may well excuse much of the literature which but repeats the same old story, as it serves to bring to the public notice, at proper intervals, the hidden resources of our land; and this constant application of essential truths will sooner or later be the means of freeing us from dependence upon the Old World for necessary chemical products. The present increase in manufacture of this acid in the United States is almost wholly from pyrites ores, which we have in unlimited quantities close at hand. The largest consumption of such acid is for treatment of other native products, petroleum, rock-phosphates, etc.; and, considering the knowledge we have gained during the past twenty years, it is safe to say that the industry is but fairly established, and the causes which have operated to place us in our present proud position are but natural incentives for a further growth and an increased consumption of the many other undiscovered or undeveloped resources of our American soi1. In one of his earlier editions Muspratt says: " It would seem that the manufacture of sulphuric acid, though as extensively carried on as any other business, yet seems to be the least understood; and the ignorance of some manufacturers appears to be only equalled by that of writers, who, in their description of the production of this acid, give figures of apparatus, and vaunt as improvements, things which have been exploded for years. It is possible to find in the works of eminent men drawings of apparatus, for the production of sulphuric acid, which never could possibly have worked one day—some, in fact, could never have worked at all."

When Dame Nature shook her horn of plenty and distributed her bounties over the face of the earth, she blessed the Pacific coast with many riches, but with these she added many offsetting disadvantages or handicaps, designed, no doubt, to effect a proper balance between wealth and economy. Nowhere is the application of the law of compensation more aptly illustrated than in the matter of fuel and power resources. A glance at the map of the Pacific northwest will show that west of the Coast Range batholith we are bounteously supplied with coal, with timber, with water power, and with tributary resources of oil from California. Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, all contain large resources of coal; Oregon and California to a lesser degree, but, compensating the golden state for its deficiency in this respect, oil was placed in the treasure ,chest. Timber, of wide variety and in lavish quantity, covers the forests from tidewater to mountain slope, and within this protected watershed area flow streams which give the Pacific coast states the largest single share of the potential water-power resources of the country. Something over 40 per cent. of the total estimated horsepower of the United States is to be found in the Pacific states, and British Columbia has 15 per cent. of the total for Canada; but of this total less than 10 per cent. has been developed.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study examined spontaneous heating episodes in coal mine pillars in an active underground coal mine. The information obtained from these incidents was then analyzed to learn which sampling methods provided the earliest indication of pillar heating. The objective of this study was to discover if the location of future events of pillar spontaneous heating could be inferred from the available information. The spontaneous heating-prone area in this evaluation involved pillars located just inby the mine portals. Several detection methods were used to determine gas levels outside as well as inside the affected pillars. It was hoped that, by incorporating external and internal sampling methods into an organized pro-gram, locations undergoing spontaneous heating could be determined more readily. This study found that by drilling small-diameter boreholes into the pillars, then obtaining gas samples from the affected pillars, the ability to locate early spontaneous heating episodes was improved. However, the ability to accurately predict future spontaneous heating events remains in question.

INTRODUCTION Mineral commodities are normally separated into three generic classes-metals, nonmetals, and energy minerals including oil and gas as well as the solid fuels. Metals, the focus of this chapter, encompass a large number of different substances. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, for in- stance, has commodity specialists following trends in over 40 metal products of importance to the country's economy and well being. Ranging from aluminum to zirconium, the metals display an incredible degree of diversity. Some such as lead are heavy, others such as magnesium are light. Some such as copper are good conductors of electricity. Others such as silicon are semiconductors. Mercury is found in liquid form, while some metals melt only when heated to extremely high temperatures. Iron and steel, aluminum, and copper are consumed in particularly large tonnages in a multitude of end uses, while many minor metals are needed in only small amounts in a few highly specialized applications. The use of some metals can be traced back into history for millennia, indeed back to the bronze and iron ages, while the commercial consumption of aluminum and other newer metals is less than a hundred years old. Some metals are extracted from large open pits, others are dug out of deep underground mines, and still others are processed from the sea. Mining and processing can be relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive, though in most instances highly sophisticated technology is necessary and the costs are high. Some metals are produced mainly as byproducts of other metals. Some are recovered in large quantities from the scrap of obsolete equipment and demolished buildings. Some are mined in only a few locations and traded worldwide, others are produced in many different countries. Some are sold by numerous firms at fluctuating prices determined on competitive commodity exchanges, others are produced by only a handful of firms and sold at stable producer-prices. This diversity makes the metals interesting, indeed fascinating, to study. Yet, it also poses problems, for each metal in its own way is unique. There is no general model or economic analysis applicable to all metals. Rather each must be considered individually, so that the analysis or model takes explicit account of its particular features. This means that a single chapter cannot begin to cover comprehensively the economics of all metals, and no attempt to do so is made here. Instead, we will concentrate on illustrating the usefulness of relatively simple economic principles, particularly those associated with supply and demand analysis, in understanding the behavior of metal markets. The next section begins by exploring the nature of metal demand. It is followed by an investigation of metal supply- from individual product production, from by- product and coproduct production, and from secondary production. The final section then illustrates the usefulness of the concepts introduced in earlier sections by using them to analyze

TANTALUM metal has a number of unique properties which give it widespread application in modern technology and in research. In electronic apparatus involving high temperatures in vacuo some of the refractory metals become brittle. Tantalum retains its ductility at elevated temperatures, and this property, together with its low vapor pressure and its ability to absorb gases, make it important in this field. Its chemical inertness in the presence of acids, halogens, and other corrosive media, makes it useful in chemical apparatus and in neuro and orthopedic surgical applications. As an addition to tungsten carbide in steel-cutting grades of cemented-carbide tools, the carbides of tantalum and of its sister element columbium have found considerable use. The present-day method1 of manufacturing tantalum is to sinter a powder compact of the metal in vacuo. Because tantalum- columbium alloys are difficult to work and since tantalum ores almost always contain columbium, the two metals must be separated chemically, the products of the separation being generally in the form of potassium tantalum fluoride and potassium columbium oxyfluoride. These salts are used in fused-salt electrolytic baths from which coarse metallic powder is deposited as a sponge at the cathode. Finer powder can be made from the coarse product or from tantalum scrap by first submitting it to an embrittling heat treatment in hydrogen and then crushing it. The fine hydrogen- containing powder may subsequently be degassed in vacuo at a high temperature. Prompted by the success of others2,3 in the magnesium reduction of titanium and zirconium halides, one of the authors under- took4 an investigation of the thermo- chemistry of the reaction between solid magnesium and gaseous tantalum penta-chloride, a subject which had not previously been studied. He found that the heat of formation of tantalum pentachloride is approximately 364,250 cal per mol at temperatures lower than the melting point of magnesium. A value of 83 units was found for the standard entropy at these temperatures. With these values, it was shown that magnesium and tantalum pentachloride are capable of reacting exothermically at temperatures less than the melting point of magnesium, and that no great violence is to be expected when these substances are heated together. The exothermic nature of the reaction indicated that the process should be efficient and should not require much externally applied energy. Tantalum pentachloride is not commonlv made commercially, and any process using it therefore involves the subsidiary problem of producing and handling this substance. Gold and precious stones were mined in Egypt in prehistoric times. This mining, carried on at intervals, extended over thousands of years, until about 1300 A. D. Then ensued a dormant period of several hundred yoars. In the mean- time Europe made great rogress in mining practice, metallurgy, and geology and sent out various expeditions during the nineteenth century to investigate ancient mines. But the exploratory work produced no material results, and not until the beginning of the present century did actual mining recommence. The reopening of old gold mines in Rhodesia aroused interest in London and Paris, and these cities provided the capital necessary for the investigation of the ancient minee in West Africa and Egypt. Speculation resulted in the division of most of the uncultivated area of Egypt and the Sudan into huge concessions, and a number of expeditions were made; but after an unprecedented activity in West Africa, roaction set in, and the flow of capital ceased. The production of strontium (Sr) metal from its oxide via an aluminothermic process under 1–5 mbar pressure was examined in this study. SrO of 99%purity by weight was used in the experiments. The effects of stoichiometry and the duration of the process on the efficiency ratio of the metallic strontium were examined. The effects of functional additives (BaO, CaO, CaC2) were also examined. Characterization was carried out using X-ray diffraction spectrometry (XRD), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and flame photometry techniques. The highest Sr efficiency ratio obtained was 96.89% in the experiment conducted at 1250 °C with 300% Al stoichiometry and 300% BaO stoichiometry.

This study delves into the satisfaction levels of indigenous communities in Apurimac-Cusco, Peru, concerning mining activities in their region. Our primary objective is to elucidate the interrelationships among observable variables, which are conceived as linear combinations of multiple factors. Employing the statistical methodology of exploratory factor analysis, we aim to pinpoint the pivotal factors influencing the progress of mining activities in Apurimac-Cusco. Through our analysis, we have identified eight key factors that exert a significant impact on mining’s sustainable development in the area. These factors encompass diverse facets, ranging from the support offered by mining company to communities, environmental considerations, education, economic factors, provision of basic services, transportation and communication, support for social organizations, and social-health-related aspects. This research endeavors to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics surrounding mining activity satisfaction among the indigenous population, offering a basis for further exploration and policy development.

Advanced technology, including automation and computerized information systems, is being adopted in mining at an ever-increasing rate to improve safety and productivity and to decrease overall costs. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report focuses on the human factors issues related to advanced technology. Among the significant facts discovered were the following: Experts studying tile design adoption, and implementation of new technology have stated repeatedly that human factors specialists should be involved from the early planning stages, through design and fabrication, and up to and during production, since human factors has been consistently identified as the biggest obstacle to the efficient utilization of new technology. Also, middle management is generally the greatest obstacle to the adoption of advanced technology, this technology can give rise to worker alienation, boredom, stress, job insecurity, and a sense of isolation; training most of the present work force is more cost effective than hiring new workers; workers are willing to accept new technology if they are given a voice in its implementation; the social and the technical systems should be jointly optimized; and with the intro¬duction of advanced technology, the cognitive or mental, rather than the physical, aspects of human-machine interaction must be emphasized.

The Buick Concentrator is a highly automated operation which utilizes a process control system for continuous monitoring and control. The process control system development, installation, and application to the concentrator grinding and flotation circuits are presented in this paper. The design and implementation of analog field sensing instrumentation, a continuous on-stream X-ray analyzer, grinding and classfication circuit controls, and a recent digital process control system utilizing a centralized computer are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the project planning and installation of the digital control system including a presentation of future plans for continuing application of computer control.

"The intact rock constant, mi, is one of the three basic input parameters required for the widelyused Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Values for the constant should ideally be determined by statistical analysis of laboratory test data. In this paper the influence of the inclusion or exclusion of tensile test data on derived values is discussed. We firstly investigate the relationship between direct tensile strength (DTS) test values and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) test values based on a literature search, finding that the correlation between the two test types is DTS = 0.9*BTS, independent of the lithology being tested. Secondly, using the shear strength database of Douglas (2002), we examine the influence of confining pressure range and the inclusion or exclusion of DTS and BTS test values on calculated values of mi.Chief amongst the influences was the exclusion of tensile data in the calculation procedure, particularly when the Hoek triaxial confining stress range requirement (?3?max = 0.5?c) was not satisfied. Based on a reasonable 1:1 relationship between R (the ratio of unconfined compressive to tensile strength), use of actual tensile data in the calculations for the Hoek brown failure criterion is considered to be a simpler and more robust approach to the use of a tensile cutoff based on empirical criteria such as that of Fairhurst (1964). We advocate the fitting a failure curve using compressive and tensile test data as the most reliable means of calculating mi, while at the same time satisfying requirements as originally advocated by Hoek relating to the appropriate triaxial confining stress range (?3?max = 0.5?c) and sufficient (>5) evenlyspread data points. In the absence of triaxial data the use of R provides a practical means of obtaining estimates of mi that are more robust than guideline values."
