El texto describe los estudios realizados sobre disparos que se realizaron en la mina deToquepala para determinar los factores que afectan el consumo de explosivos por toneladas de material movido. Para ello, se hace una recopilación de estadísticas diarias de disparos, se ordena la presentación de estas estadísticas y se realiza la interpretación y correlación de los datos señalados con varios niveles de minado y las características de las rocas existentes en ellos. Producto de este estudio se determina la distribución de "razón de carga" por zonas dentro de la mina. Cada zona agrupa "razones de carga" similares, y las zonas entre sí tienen valores diferentes. Finalmente, el conocimiento y la aplicación correcta de estos factores, mejora la distribución de cargas de explosivo y por ende, puede derivar en voladuras más eficaces con la consiguiente economía en el minado .

This paper tells the story of the rapid commercial application of stirred milling technology at Anglo American Platinum?s many Concentrators. The first stirred mill ? a 10 000 litre IsaMillTM; the largest at the time, was commissioned in late 2003. The project development work was presented at SAG 2001. This operation was ?proof of concept? and vindicated the decision to scale up the technology; allowing a rapid and extensive roll-out of mainstream regrind mills as well as several further flotation concentrate regrind mills, over the next six years. Currently 23 stirred mills are in operation with 64 MW of installed drive capacity ? this paper describes the projects? roll-out and the significant results achieved to date. Many operational problems have been solved along the way, some of these will be described. The introduction of the technology has seen a step change in metallurgical results and progressively decreasing operating costs.

Seawater has become a viable alternative for different uses in copper hydrometallurgy. In this paper we review the main physical and chemical characteristics of seawater and how these influence copper production. Reliable data on the use of continental water are reported, and the current use and consumption of seawater in the Chilean mining industry is analysed, indicating the main areas of use and the main problems encountered. Additionally, the influence of the elements in seawaterthat have the most influence on the extractive metallurgy of copper are considered. The Chilean copper mining industry currently consumes approximately 4.1 m3/s of seawater, which corresponds to 25% of the total water used. The use of seawater for the leaching of copper sulphide minerals, such as chalcopyrite, is beneficial because it provides 20 g/L of chloride, thereby improving copper dissolution kinetics.

Many developing countries with little or no previous environmental regulation are now promulgating air quality regulations which require facilities to demonstrate compliance with both process parameter based emission limits and ambient air quality standards. For many companies with operations in developing countries, an air quality compliance program at the facility level is lacking and these companies have very little background information to work with in developing a program for assessing and maintaining compliance. This paper will present a methodology for development of a comprehensive air quality compliance program for operations located in developing countries with new environmental regulations. The experiences of the authors in developing an air quality compliance program for a mining operation located in South America will be used as a basis. A program for meeting new air quality requirements can be developed in seven steps. The seven steps are: (1) regulatory review and project scope; (2) design and implementation of a baseline air quality monitoring program; (3) site visit, (4) development of a complete air emission inventory; (5) dispersion modeling; (6) compliance analysis and compliance plan; and (7) project completion.

i2) twinning in poly crystalline magnesium does not usually occur homogeneously but is concentrated in localized regions or bands inclined at about 45 deg to the stress axis. These bands of twinning are in many ways similar to the Luders bands seen in mild steel alzd Al-Mg alloys. Within a hand the percentage of the volume twinned may approach 100 with no twinning outside the band. Bands are not produced in specimens of grain size a3 x 10-= in. or in samples deformed at temperatures 300°F. Annealing of heavily twinned regions leads to re crystallization textures markedly different from those found in the starting material. The exact preferred orientation appears to depend on the starting grain size, the amount of compres-sive strain and the manner in which it is introduced. MAGNESIUM, with its hexagonal crystal structure, deforms plastically at room temperature by a variety of deformation mechanisms, one of the most important of which is (1012) twinning. In single crystals such twinning occurs on compression parallel to the basal plane or tension perpendicular to it. In wrought polycrystalline magnesium, such as rolled sheet, the preferred orientation is such that almost all the grains have their basal planes nearly parallel to the sheet surface. Therefore, if sheet material is deformed by cold rolling or by tension in the plane of the sheet, deformation of the grains by (1012) twinning is not favored. On the other hand, twins form readily on compression parallel to the plane of the sheet as in a compression test, on the compression side of a bent sample, or at the outer rim of a drawn cup. The first part of this paper deals with the morphology of (1012) twinning in polycrystalline magnesium. Some aspects of this subject were covered by Barrett and ~aller.' Of direct bearing on the work to be reported here are the comments of Jetter' in discussion to Ref. 1. He shows that Mg + 1.5 pct Mn alloy sheet when bent about a transverse axis develops a pattern of transverse bands on the surface of compression. A longitudinal section through the sheet shows that the bands are wedge-shaped and inclined to the rolling direction. The bands were identified as "outcrops of regions in which deformation is localized as the result of the reorientation brought about by (1012) twinning". The second part of the paper treats the recrys-tallization texture of the specimens twinned by compression. Magnesium deformed and then annealed generally recrystallizes with no change in orientation.1'3'4 This statement is true provided that the amount of (1012) twinning occurring during deformation is small. In an isolated observation, Anse15 has shown that, when deformation produces much (1072) twinning, annealing causes new maxima to appear in the pole figure. The second part of the paper elaborates on this point. I) MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES All of the experimental work to be reported was done using the commercial sheet and plate alloy AZ31B (nominal composition: 3 pct Al, 1 pct Zn, 0.4 pct Mn, balance magnesium). This alloy is available commercially in two tempers, -0 (fully annealed) and -H24 (partially annealed), and specimens of both tempers were used in various experiments. This report is in three parts. The first part presents a review of theoretical models which have been developed to study removal operations for various types of materials. In the second part, a brief summary is given of coal cutting research. The majority of this work has been carried out in Britain using chisel type bits rather than the conical picks which are in general use in this country. However, a comparison of specific energies measured for conical picks in the laboratory and in the mine shows very encouraging correspondence. In the third part of the report, analytical models for coal cutting by picks are suggested. An extension of the British "tensile breakage" theory, developed for chisels, is given for picks. The role of crushing and cutting in coal removal is discussed as a theory which combines the two processes is shown to give reasonable predictions for specific energy requirements. Finally, directions in which the existing theory could be improved are presented and the need for further research is emphasized.

Platinum-group elements (PGE) are preferentially associated with chromian spinels, including high-iron chromite, magnesian-chromian hercynite, and chromian magnetite in clinopyroxene-rich upper stratigraphic portions of the Tonsina ultramafic complex in southern Alaska. Ratios of Pt:Pt+Pd are proportional to chromium content in the associated chromian spinels. The maximum PGE content of geochemical rock samples from Dust Mountain is greater than 20.000 ppb (>0.6 oz/ton) with minor gold values. The maximum PGE content of tabled chromite concentrates is 3.430 ppb (0.1 oz/ton) at Dust Mountain. 1.029 ppb (0.03 oz/ton) at Sheep Hill, and 1,749 ppb (0.051 oz/ton) at Bernard Mountain. High-iron chromite at Dust Mountain yields tabled chromite concentrates with Cr:Fe ratios between 0.5 and 1.2. Lower PGE contents are found in more chromium-rich chromitites from Sheep Hill and Bernard Mountain that yield concentrates with Cr:Fe ratios between 1.0 and 2.8. Platinum-group minerals include amalgams. arsenides. PGE alloys, and sulfides. These minerals are between 3 and 40 microns in size and are concentrated along grain boundaries and fractures of metasomatically and hydrothermally altered chromian spinel grains.

When Marco Polo visited China in the 13th century, no one knew what black powder was except the Chinese; they knew enough to make dazzling fireworks with it. But the realization that black powder could also do useful work came much later and, like all important discoveries, it altered the course of history. It was in the 14th century that black powder was first used to break rock in a very crude way; there were no drills and the powder was simply poured into cracks and exploded by setting it afire. Because its energy value was pretty low, the need for something more powerful was felt when the industrial revolution began. In the 1850s, miners began experimenting with liquid nitroglycerine on a limited scale. This was a very sensitive and dangerous explosive. Fortunately in the 1860s, Alfred Nobel succeeded in stabilizing nitroglycerine by absorbing it in kieselguhr-and a new product, dynamite, was born. With it, miners were able to unleash the great energy of nitroglycerine for blasting purposes. But dynamite was still a very sensitive explosive. In subsequent years, other explosives of various strengths and characteristics were developed, such as blasting gelatin, gelatin dynamite, ammonia dynamites, (all containing some nitroglycerine or nitrostarch), and liquid oxygen explosives. These products and their variations supplied the blasting trade for many years. A grained ammonium nitrate product containing some carbonaceous material entered the market in the 1930s. This explosive had below-zero sensitivity-meaning: a No. 6 blasting cap imbedded in it would not detonate it. A more sensitive initiator, called a primer, was needed to detonate this mixture. From Rags to Primacord to Solid-State The first initiator for an explosive charge was probably a rag slowly burning its way to the charge; this method was quite unreliable. Then came the burning fuse, which was an improvement. Next was the nonelectric blasting cap initiated by a fuse. With these initiators, a miner needed quick reflexes and good legs; upon lighting the fuse, he had to run immediately for cover. Development of the electric blasting cap that allowed for accurate timing eliminated this hazard; the electric cap, however, introduced other safety problems because of its susceptibility to extraneous electricity, e.g., ground currents, lightning, and static electricity. These caps also became available in millisecond delays. Development in the mid-1930s of Primacord, a detonating fuse insensitive to electrical currents or impact, further reduced blasting hazards, and is generally acknowledged as the safest known means of initiation. Eventually, Primacord millisecond connectors also became available for delay patterns in blasting. In the mid-1960s, the Primadet delay was introduced; it is a practical nonelectric detonator system that offers the precise timing of electric blasting caps-and is immune to the hazards or effects of extraneous electricity. Recently, Research Energy of Ohio, Inc. introduced a new type of solid-state blasting machine that combines a sequential timer and delay caps. It enables the efficient breakage of rock with a minimum amount of shock, ground vibration, and noise. Improvements in Blast-Hole Drilling World War II created an enormous demand for coal and other minerals in the U.S. and elsewhere. Great efforts and large amounts of capital were spent to find new mineral deposits and develop better mining methods. But while mechanization in mining proceeded at a rapid pace particularly in open-cut work, there was a definite lag in developing new or improved machines for drilling blast holes. The industry continued to depend largely on horizontal, churn, and pneumatic drills. No better machine was available for large scale production. The need for improvement in this phase of mining became more acute in the post-war years. Despite efforts toward further mechanization, mining costs rose rapidly because of mounting inflation and increasingly high wages. In most operations, drilling and blasting the overburden became the principal item of cost. Therefore, whatever size holes were being drilled, the holes had to be spaced so that any foot of the bore hole could be loaded with the maximum load required for the number of cubic yards of material that each foot of the hole was carrying. Emulsion explosives are a common industrial explosive and have a non-ideal detonation behaviour. The detonation performance for a given product changes with the charge diameter, ground conditions, con?nement and density. The burning process of an emulsion explosive has been modelled with an ignition and growth model in the LS-DYNA code. The parameters in the burning rate function are calibrated by the detonation velocities and the detonation front curvature radii from emulsion explosive tests. A Perl program was developed for an efficient estimation of the parameters, and the results show that the calibrated parameters can predict both detonation velocities and the detonation front curvatures.CITATION:Yi, C, Nyberg, U and Johansson, D, 2015. A cada ano a demanda por aços limpos aumenta, tornando o controle de inclusões cada vez mais importante. Durante o refino secundário de aços, ocorrem a eliminação de impurezas, ajuste da composição química e ajuste da temperatura do aço líquido. A remoção de inclusões não-metálicas geralmente ocorre nessa etapa, sendo realizada pela escória. Neste trabalho, foi definido um planejamento de experimentos para que numa segunda etapa, os conhecimentos obtidos possam ser comparados e transferidos para a prática industrial. Inicialmente, foi feita uma revisão da literatura sobre experimentos realizados em fornos de laboratório com amostras de aços e escórias focados na remoção de inclusões. Depois de analisados diferentes arranjos experimentais propostos, alguns trabalhos selecionados foram analisados com respeito às inclusões e às escórias presentes. Finalmente, no planejamento proposto, definiu-se que os experimentos serão realizados em forno resistivo com passagem de argônio. As amostras serão fundidas em cadinhos de MgO na temperatura de 1600ºC e, após 90 minutos nesta temperatura, as mesmas serão resfriadas em água. Alguns parâmetros que poderão ser estudados são a população de inclusões, viscosidade efetiva da escória, teor de oxigênio total e composição de inclusões ao longo do tempo.

A pilot-scale study was performed to evaluate the potential for gravity concentration of gold from -13 mm (-1/2 in.) crushed ore from Ester Dome, AK. 9.04 t (9.94 st) of crushed ore were sampled and processed through a Pan-American jig-Wilfley table pilot plant. Plant products were sampled for assay and material balance calculations. Gold recovery through one stage of jigging and two stages of tabling was 17.4% at a concentration ratio of 615:1. Concentrate grade was 766.3 g/t (22.4 oz/st). The feed grade to the plant was calculated at 1.71 g/t (0.05 oz/st). Jig tailings, primary table tailings and secondary table tailings grades were 1.44 g/t (0.042 oz/st), 1.30 g/t (0.038 oz/st), and 5.47 g/t (0.16 oz/st, respectively. Significant coarse, free-milling gold values were shown to remain in the, jig tailings. Concentrate mineralogy is discussed.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating possible applications of acoustic energy at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies in petroleum production. A phase of this work involves measuring sound velocity through petroleum reservoir rocks. References and abstracts were prepared as a bibliography to make available to others some of the material obtained from a literature search covering the past applications and the present uses of sound. Laboratory and theoretical studies of the various parameters that influence the velocity of sound in porous media account for the wealth of information now available. Velocity of propagation of sound waves in porous sediments as a function of depth is a quantity frequently measured. Velocity logging systems, capable of measuring speed of sound waves in underground formations penetrated by wells, have been developed for interpretative studies. The close relation between acoustic velocity and porosity makes it possible to determine porosity from velocity logs. Most velocity log interpretation in terms of porosity is based on a formula developed by Wyllie and others known as the time-average relation.

Haul truck drivers are at a high risk of developing fatigue due to the monotonous nature of the work and demanding shift rosters. In the mining industry, fatigue is identified as a major contributing factor in several fatal accidents a year. A number of fatigue detection devices are now available, that can contribute to improved fatigue risk management in the mining industry. This paper describes the technology and algorithms behind one particular product which is both predictive and un-obtrusive to the operator. The Advisory System for Tired Drivers (ASTiD), was developed by Fatigue Management International (FMI) in collaboration with the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre (LSRC), both in the United Kingdom. While this system includes a model of the human circadian rhythm as a bias for predicting expected fatigue risk by time of day, it also uses yaw data generated by a solid-state gyroscope in the horizontal plane. Algorithms analyse this data to determine the level of monotony of actual driving conditions and to detect changes in steering control caused by driver fatigue. During normal levels of attention, a haul truck driver applies continuous, small adjustments to the steering wheel. As the level of fatigue increases, steering adjustments become less frequent and more erratic. Differentiating between these modes of control in the highly variable mining environment is accomplished by chromatic processing of the gyroscope data. This paper will go into some detail explaining the principles behind chromatic processing and the specific application of these in detecting fatigue in haul truck operators.Technology in itself is not the solution to addressing operator fatigue, but it plays an important role in ongoing monitoring and maintaining awareness with mining personnel. Furthermore, the specific principles behind ASTiD technology support a risk-based approach to fatigue management, allowing optimisation of the mining operation for productivity as well as safety.

El presente texto describe la mineralización de una de las estructuras mineralizadas de la mina Quiruvilca denominada la veta Papelillo. Para ello, se describe la fisiografía glaciar, la estructura mineralizada en volcánicos de la formación Callipuy del Cretáceo Superior a Terciario Inferior (mayormente de composición andesítica) intruida por pequeños stoks riolíticos, andesíticos y dacíticos. Asimismo, abundan la esfarelita, rubia, galena, marmatita en menor proporción enargita, rodocrocita y cuarzo. La caolinización es la alteración hipógena importante que ubica los cuerpos mineralizados, con texturas mayormente de relleno. Como controles estructurales, está la presencia de cimoides según el rumbo y buzamiento de la veta, la falla de relleno mineralizado fue normal con mayor potencia en los sectores de mayor buzamiento.

This report describes in detail the results of petrographic research conducted on 21 phosphate ores representing important deposits in southwestern Montana , southeastern Idaho , and northeastern Utah . The ores are described and categorized by mineralogical and chemical composition , thermal behavior of organic carbon , and textural constitution . Descriptive and genetic classification schemes applicable to western phosphate ores are discussed ; results from related studies made of the collophane mineralogy are also presented . The latter studies were centered on determining unit - cell dimensions and CO₂ , P2O5 , and fluorine content of collophane concentrates of 11 high - grade phosphate- rock hand specimens selected solely for this purpose . On the basis of this investigation , operational methods have been developed for quantitatively describing textural and compositional features that are likely to be significant in determining the response of phosphate ores to conventional beneficiation treatments ; systems for classifying the ores in relation to these features have been proposed . Studies to date point out distinct textural and compositional variations in the western phosphates and illustrate their importance in determining optimum beneficiation procedure .

Low content of TiO2 and high impurities content of Ca and Mg are the shortcomings of domestic ilmenite. To meet the requirements of the material in the titania produced by chlorination process and titanium sponge industry, enrichment of ilmenite is necessary. In the process of enriching ilmenite, high temperature and reductive condition were beneficial to the formation of anosovite, but the high content of magnesium oxide which was solid soluble in anosovite baffled the following separation. So the effects of pre-oxidation and reductive conditions including reduction temperature, reduction time and hydrogen concentration on the phase composition and metallization rate were studied. The characteristics of reduction samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and optical microscope. Results have shown that the reduction product is mainly composed of Fe, Fe(Mg)TiO3 and TiO2 at 1123K, its metallization rate is about 65%,magnesium exists in Fe(Mg)TiO3.

Direct digestion of phosphate ores by the acid-alcohol method offers improved leaching selectivity for the exclusion of iron and aluminum in the product acid. The leaching kinetics of this process will have a major role in the eventual application of this technology. The Bureau of Mines investigated apatite dissolution to determine the reaction rate and mechanisms of the leaching kinetics. The dissolution kinetics were monitored on various sized fractions of pure apatite. The "shrinking-core" kinetics model was applied to the data to determine the rate controlling mechanisms. For each size fraction, the initial reaction rate was controlled by the dissolution reaction. After an hour the dissolution rate slowed indicating a diffusion controlled reaction caused by the formation of calcium sulfate hemi-hydrate coating on each particle. For complete dissolution of the apatite, the phosphate rock should be ground to near 10 µ m size.

Energetics has been in the business of climate change for more than twenty years. This experience has only served to cement the understanding that decisions taken during design define the environmental and economic performance of any project. The 80-20 rule definitely applies, with 80% of a project’s performance being set through the first 20% of design decisions. This in depth knowledge is used for determining energy price forecasts, future carbon markets and carbon costs, current and future energy technologies, as well as giving a thorough understanding of the processes and technologies in place in the mining industry to work out what the most carbon and energy sensitive decisions during design are. Project selection and design is a gated process where decisions are taken in line with the information available at that point in the evolution of the project. Design decisions are, by their nature, dominated by uncertainty. In order to ensure that robust decisions are taken, it is necessary to ensure that the correct information is brought to bear at the correct decision point. This then defines and supplies the necessary carbon and energy information for design decisions to be correctly made. One of the most significant risks facing design engineers and decision makers in the mining industry is the future cost of energy. Part of this risk is associated with a future cost of carbon, however, a significant part of this risk is the cost, and variability in this cost, of the energy itself. This paper investigates the information required to support good decision taking during the design process.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators accept poor quality evaluations because they are generally unaware of what they should expect.The 2010 draft AusIMM ‘Guidelines for Techno-Economic Evaluations’ were collated by a subcommittee of practitioners and are regarded as best practice.They apply directly to projects and metallurgical plant evaluations, including those with a heavy technical basis. They can be applied to technical problem solving where there are no monetary computations.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators should demand that economic models and evaluations follow the six principles. They should become working tools which are easy to understand, fit for purpose, consistent, rigorous, record sources of input data, have key graphs and are rapid to audit.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo o uso de modelos termodinâmicos da literatura e termodinâmica computacional no estudo de dessulfuração de ferro-gusa através de misturas CaO-Fluorita e CaO-Sodalita. As experiências foram realizadas com a adição de diferentes misturas destes sistemas em ferro-gusa a uma temperatura de 1400°C. Os resultados dos testes foram analisados e comparados com os obtidos pelos modelos termodinâmicos da literatura e o software de termodinâmica computacional ThermoCalc. Através dos modelos da literatura foram calculados basicidade óptica, capacidade de sulfeto (Cs) e partição de enxofre (Ls). Pelo software ThermoCalc foram calculados o teor de enxofre de equilíbrio no metal, fases sólidas, e a quantidade de líquido em cada uma das misturas dessulfurantes utilizadas no processo a uma temperatura de 1.400ºC. O ThermoCalc mostrou-se mais preciso que os modelo da literatura na análise da capacidade de dessulfuração das misturas utilizadas neste trabalho.

The production of low- and medium-Btu gas from coal provides a more economic source of energy for most industrial users than pipeline-quality coal gas (SNG), although the latter has received more publicity. The paper reviews existing and advanced methods of coal gasification, with particular emphasis on the production of low- and medium Btu gas for industrial and utility use. Some of the ways in which coal gasification can be integrated into power cycles and industrial plant energy balances are discussed.
