Underground coal mines in the United States are in the process of completing installations for tracking and communication systems, mandated by Congress after a number of recent coal mine disasters. Yet, evaluation, modelling and testing of such systems has lagged due to legislated changes, abruptly introduced into the coal mining industry. System installation in a wide array of mine types, configurations, layouts and characteristics has provided a wealth of information regarding their potential in underground environments. Data collected from numerous installations for a variety of systems can be used to further define true capability and accuracy of communication and tracking packages. This paper describes a uniform means of evaluating the performance of a communication and tracking system. Several performance measures are proposed and described. These measures can also be predicted using an interactive software program. This program predicts the signal propagation, given the input mine characteristics and layout, with numerical and visual feedback. New or alternative system installations can also be more accurately designed to potentially minimise initial system cost and time required for trial and error installs. The focus of this research is to develop tools and protocols that can evaluate and measure the effectiveness of installed underground communication and tracking systems.

Coal is China's main source of energy. In 1988, 76.1% of commercial energy consumption was supplied by coal. To provide a rational utilization of its coal resources, China has paid considerable attention to coal preparation over the last 10 years. In 1980, there were only 105 washeries treating about 100 million tonnes of coal, but by 1988 there were 151 washeries treating 171 million tonnes per year. This paper describes the development of China's coal preparation industry; its growth, the equipment, and the technology. Statistics and information on the current status of the industry are also be presented.

Este trabalho aborda um estudo de caso sobre a transferência do conhecimento siderúrgico de colaboradores da empresa para o sistema que realiza o controle de produção da Usina de Cubatão. Este processo de transferência foi realizado em etapas até a implantação do sistema que registra os principais eventos realizados pelas máquinas operacionais. Estes registros são armazenados em banco de dados e com o uso de ferramentas, podem ser apresentados em relatórios e gráficos. Com isso, a empresa possui um sistema de produção muito confiável, por ter condição de analisar e diagnosticar cada etapa do processo de produção e acompanhar com precisão as falhas e acertos operacionais. Quando há estabilidade no processo e todos os eventos acontecem de acordo com a condição normal de operação, o sistema possibilita um controle aprimorado no consumo de gás e da produtividade. O método utilizado é baseado em um projeto de experimentos que examina a influência dos principais parâmetros de controle no processo de produção industrial.

Molten Salt electrolytic processes offer unique opportunities to extract and refine metals where gaseous or metallothemlic reduction, hydrometallurgical extraction and aqueous electrolytic methods are thermodynamically constrained. Production of aluminum and magnesium by molten salt electrolysis are well known commercial processes. Several other reactive metals, such as lanthanides and actinides, as well as beryllium and calcium, make use of molten salt processing for extraction and refining. This presentation describes the science of molten salt chemistry and electrochemistry for winning and refining of several metals. In addition, recovery of metals from waste process salts by molten salt reduction as well as oxidation have been discussed. Material issues in design of molten salt reactors have been included. Various applications have been presented through case studies. Experimental data have been included to justify the suitability as well as limitations of these specific processes.

THE determination of suitable and safe annealing temperatures is one of the most important problems arising in the operation of a copper rolling mill. Certain of the larger mills have worked this problem out for themselves and in these mills the operation has become more or less standardized. In some of the mills pyrometers are used to measure the temperature of the annealing furnaces and careful watch is kept to see that overheating does not take place. In a considerable number of the mills, however, dependence is placed entirely on the judgment of the operator. The almost total lack of literature bearing on this subject seems sufficient warrant for the publication of this paper. The discussion of this subject naturally divides itself into two parts: (1) The effect of annealing temperature on physical properties; and (2) changes in the microstructure of refined copper due to cold rolling and annealing. I. THE EFFECT OF ANNEALING TEMPERATURE ON PHYSICAL PROPERTIES For the purpose of investigating this phase of the subject six test bars were selected, varying in oxygen content between the limits of 0.036 and 0.070 per cent. Published optical microscopic and X- ray diffraction characteristics of the following compounds are critically evaluated and compared with Bureau of Mines data : Tricalcium aluminate , calcium monoa luminate , dodecacalcium heptaluminate , dicalcium silicate , tricalcium silicate , and sodium aluminate . A recommended set of definitive optical and X- ray diffraction characteristics is presented . These values are used to identify products of the lime soda sinter process for production of alumina . Polymorphism of gamma- , beta- , and alpha prime - dicalcium silicate is reexamined , and new data are presented on polymorphism of tricalcium silicate and sodium aluminate by high- temperature X- ray diffractometry . Polymorphism is not observed for tricalcium aluminate , calcium monoaluminate , and dodecacalcium heptaluminate . Bureau of Mines data indicating a stoichiometry of 12Ca0.7A10 for the phase 5Ca0.3A1 0₂ are discussed . A critical review of the literature concerning calcium dia luminate and sodium undecaluminate ( 8 -A10 ) is also included .

A YEAR ago, ,at the Institute's dinner, I closed my A remarks with the words: "The scientist devotes his life to the advancement of learning; the engineer gives his to the advancement of living." May 1 begin tonight where I left off then and speak first of the distinction between science and engineering? This difference is a difference both in purpose and in method: it is the sharp contrast between theory and practice; it marks the broad gap between dream and attainment. Sometimes it happens that the investigator is also the builder and applies what he discovers, yet the distinction between science and engineering serves to point out the broad dependence of the engineer upon his brother the scientist. You remember .the old - saying that "where there is no vision the people perish" translate this into modern experience and we may say that "where there is no science, the engineer fails."

SiO2 and Al2O3 in the metallurgical slag of nickel laterite ore have great recycling values. In this work, Si and Al were extracted from the slag in NaOH based molten salts through alkali roasting and water leaching process for preparing zeolite materials. The extraction ratio of SiO2 increases with increased temperature and appropriately prolonged time, and more than 80% SiO2 can be recycled from the slag after roasting at 550°C. Si and Al from the slag are in the filtered liquor for producing zeolite materials, while Mg, Ca, Fe and other impurities remain in the leached residues. Adding Na2CO3 into the alkalin-slag roasting process can reduce the amount of pure NaOH used with minor decrease in extraction ratio of SiO2, while make better separation of Ca to avoid it getting into the filtered liquor. Adding Al2O3 into the alkalin roasting process can replace part of more expensive NaAlO2 addition that is required for preparing zeotite material, which may bring out a minor decrease in extraction ratio of SiO2 due to formation of NaAlSiO 4 in the filtered residues. Quality X zeolite and 4A zeolite materials can be made from the starting liquor containing Si and Al recycled from the laterite nickel slag through alkali roasting and water leaching process.

It is very seldom that a completely new project is initiated. Most projects consist of a new and different combination of proven techniques or a combination of proven and new techniques. The theme of my discussion today falls in the second category. Proven methods of water transportation and proven methods of bulk material handling were combined with some new techniques which resulted in a new market for the coal industry and a cheaper fuel supply for the power industry. In this respect I refer to the water transportation of coal from the West Kentucky coal fields to coal burning power plants on the west coast of Florida. Peabody Coal Company, Florida Power Company, Gulf Coast Transit, and Mid-South Towing combined their individual requirements and "know how' to make this project possible. I feel the results speak for themselves since it proves that coal can be mined in the West Kentucky coal fields, transported some 1,200 miles by river barge and some 450 miles by ocean going barges, be delivered to power plants on the west coast of Florida and still meet the competitive prices of gas and residual oil. The unique parts of this project concerns the storage and trans loading facilities for coal from river equipment to ocean equipment near New Orleans; the return haul of phosphate and it's trans loading from ocean to river equipment at the same facility and the use of large ocean going barges. In detail it works as follows: Coal is mined in West Kentucky and loaded into 1,500 ton river barges on the Green River. It is then transported some 100 miles to the mouth of the Green on the Ohio River, then 200 miles down the Ohio to it's convergence with the Mississippi, and then 900 miles down the Mississippi to the trans loading facility some 40 miles South of New Orleans. There it is transferred from the 1,500 ton river barges to 18,000 ton ocean going barges and hauled some 450 miles across the Gulf of Mexico to the Gannon Station of Tampa Electric at Tampa entailing a total haul of approximately 1,650 miles.

ALTHOUGH the iron-carbon diagram has undergone many changes in the last 20 years, the region below the eutectoid line and up to approxi-mately 1.7 per cent carbon has been little affected. This region is generally considered to consist of cementite and ferrite. Graphite has been noted occasionally in the hypereutectoid steel region, and the ready formation of graphite nodules in malleable cast iron is a phenomenon difficult to interpret in the light of cementite, supposedly stable at sub-eutectoid temperatures. In this case the graphite formation has been partly explained by the presence of silicon, and many have believed that silicon acts to change the stable state rather than to accelerate reactions so as to arrive at the stable state in a briefer period of time. Consider-ation of this phenomenon indicates that cementite is not the stable phase in the temperature composition zone referred to. In the course of examining a low-carbon steel tube taken from a petroleum cracking still, which had been in service for approximately three years at temperatures somewhat below the eutectoid temperature, observations were made that shed light on this entire subject. The tube in question analyzed:1 C, 0.15 per cent; Mn, 0.49; Si, 0.02; S, 0.023; P, 0.015. The microstructure of the tube after service is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. From these it is evident that cementite as such is absent, and that in its place nodular graphite has been formed. In order to check this observation further, samples taken from the tube were heated at 850° C. for varying periods of time. "THE PRELIMINARY EVALUATION of the orebodies was computerized for tonnages and grades on a 20- by 20-ft grid. The evaluation was based on drill-core intersections over 40-ft vertical projections coinciding with the proposed bench intervals, taking the deviations of the drill holes into account. The computer print-outs gave an ore distribution and evaluation bench by bench and indicated the areas of varying mineralization. The two orebodies have a combined length of 2,200 ft. and a maximum width of 600 ft. They strike almost due north, dip about 85 degrees east and rake to the north. The computer print-outs were used to design an open pit with an over-all waste to ore ratio of 2.58:1. At the outset, the waste to ore ratio was 4:1. The pit is tear-drop shaped, with the narrow end to the south, and at the surface is 2,600 ft long by 1,800 ft wide. Ramps are 100 ft wide, with a 10% grade. The south ramp is left-handed, starts at the southeast and will continue to the bottom of the pit. A second ramp on the west and north walls runs from surface to join the south ramp at 7 bench. This ramp will handle the total pit production when part of the south ramp, from 4 bench to surface, is lost due to the underground operation. Over-all wall slopes are 53 degrees, and are laid out to avoid prominent protuberances which could relax and become unstable and potentially dangerous (Fig. 1) ."

The mass spectra of 14 previously unreported alkylthiophenes are pre-sented. Low ionization voltage data of selected compounds from these 14 and 23 previously reported alkylthiophenes are presented and discussed for their value in supporting fragmentation mechanisms analytical correlations. A comparison with and corroboration of earlier correlations is made. Additional correlations concerning detection of side chain branching and the detection of ethyl-alkyl and propyl-alkylthiophenes are made. A discussion of the possible fragmentation routes and mechanism of fragmentation is given. Speculative structures are inferred s out some of the ions and hence this work provides a basis for suggesting fation mechanisms for the alkylthiophenes according to modern theories ass spectrometry. Verification of these mechanisms must await the availability of isotopically labeled molecules which are labeled in specific lotions that permit the definition of the paths of frag-mentation. Some suggestions for further work to generalize on the correlations and studies made to this point are presented.

Considerable thought and discussion had been devoted toward provision for increased milling capacity at the Allenby concentrator of The Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company operations as early as 1940. During the war, plans for the installation of an additional grindi.ng unit were formulated but were not carried out. It took considerable time after the war to prepare the mine again for its highest rate of production since, with the scarcity of men, development work had been sacrificed in favour of maximum ore shipments. In order to prepare for the expected competitive market in copper, the matter of increasing the capacity of the concentrator was again given serious attention. As ore became available in the mine and the output of the mill was increased, limitations for a satisfactory recovery were observed, due to the overloaded condition of the classifier units at the higher tonnages. From a metallurgical standpoint, the ore from the Copper Mountain mine had always been difficult to treat on account of the finely disseminated character of much of the mineralization and the difficulty of grinding to the desired fineness. This trouble has become aggravated with time as an increasing amount of wall-rock has diluted the ore and lower grade orebodies have been mined. It therefore has been, and is, the practice at the concentrator to maintain the maximum amount of reduction in size of material fed to the flotation units as is possible for the daily tonnage to be milled. This means that all the grinding units are operated for the maximum possible time, and that the classifiers are regulated to return as much feed ?as possible to the mills. The number of tons to be milled for ?the day is determined by the concentrator superintendent after ascertaining the availability of ore from the mine, the condition of the concentrator ore bins, and the need for repairs in the rolls plant. In order to maintain the tonnage des1red, hourly estimates are made of the rate of grinding by weighing the amount of ore contained on one foot of each of the belts conveying the feed to the various ball-mills, and adjustments are made accordingly.

Apart from its role as an essential input to a wide array of agricultural chemicals and industrial processes, sulfur is interesting in that its supply involves competition between primary product and by-product. This general production structure is found repeatedly among markets for metals and other industrial minerals, and research results from the sulfur market potentially carry over to other markets with similar structures. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the recent and prospective market for sulfur. The analysis will rely heavily on simulation using a comprehensive model of the North American sulfur market developed by the author. Emulsion explosives consist of an aqueous oxidizer phase, a fuel phase, and an emulsifier. The ability to use lower-cost sources for any of these raw materials presents an obvious economic advantage to emulsion manufacturers. This paper focuses on using low cost waste drain oils as the fuel phase in emulsion explosive applications. Laboratory studies showed that emulsions made from waste drain oils and agricultural ammonium nitrate prills were usable for emulsion explosives though their shear stability was weak. Customer field results proved that waste crankcase drain oil could replace half of the virgin diesel fuel in emulsion explosives to make an effective emulsion explosive product with a very low cost.

Blasters are well aware of the problems and expense faced when trying to load in wet bore holes; problems of poor coupling and poor density, as well as the expense of higher priced cartridge product. In answer to these problems, I developed a system for dewatering using nozzles with lay -flat plastic liners which I have used successfully over the last few years. I found the system not only gave me better shots than I could have expected in the circumstances, but also dramatically decreased costs. The system has been adopted by two large roading contractors and a quarry operation in Eastern Canada.

In a previous report results were given and a method outlined whereby from a knowledge of the composition of the natural gas and of the inflammability limits of the individual constituents composing the natural gas, the limits of inflammability of natural gas and air mixtures could be closely calculated. This method is based on the application of Le Chatelier's law as modified by Coward, Carpenter and Payman, to apply to a mixture of any number of combustible gases. This law must not be used indiscriminately, because many exceptions have been found. For example, when ethylene, acetylene, hydrogen sulphide, or chlorinated hydrocarbons are present the law may not hold. For a discussion of the rally exceptions which have been found, reference should be made to a report by Coward and Jones. Before this method can be used the inflammable limits of the individual constituents must be known. Also, the composition of the complex combustible mixture, and representative mixtures besides, must be tested both experimentally and by calculation to prove whether Le Chatelier's law may be applied.

"IntroductionDuring 1994, Barrick Gold Corporation, or American Barrick at that period, acquired Lac Minerals Ltd. properties. One of them was the Bousquet Complex. The Bousquet Complex is divided into three distinct sites: one mine (Bousquet 2), one mill (Est-Malartic Division) and one analytical chemistry laboratory (Les Terrains auriferes).The Bousquet 2 orebody was discovered in 1986. An extensive drilling program was initiated during 1987. Its purpose was to define the orebody extent. At the end of 1997, gold production from Bousquet 2 mine reached 1 290 000 oz of gold from a cumulative tonnage processed of 4 175 000 M t.From 1980 to 1990, the Est-Malartic mill was used for the treatment of ore from the following mines: Bousquet 1, Doyon, Francoeur (Richmont mines), Buckshot and 1-20 stope. At present, the mill receives ore from the Bousquet 2 mine.HistoryThe Est-Malartic mill is located close to the town of Malartic in northwestern Quebec. The mill has been in production since the mid-1930s processing mainly clean, free mill gold ore. Active mining from the Est-Malartic mine ceased in 1979 and the mill was switched to custom processing of ore from La Mine Doyon located some 45 km to the west. This custom processing arrangement continued until 1987 when the expanded mill at Doyon became available to process all of the Doyon production. In 1987, Lac Minerals commenced development of a second mine at the Bousquet site located 40 km west of Malartic. This mine, Bousquet 2, is the down dip extension of the La Ronde mine developed by Agnico Eagle. During pre-feasibility evaluations, it was determined that it would be economically more attractive to modify the existing Est-Malartic mill than building a new facility on site. The Est-Malartic mill modifications for processing the high-copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine began in late 1989 and new circuits were commissioned in mid-1990. Modifications included the addition of both gravity and flotation concentration circuits to recover coarse, free gold and the copper. The existing leaching circuit continued to operate on the copper flotation tailings with some minor modifications to the solution handling systems. A S02/Air cyanide destruction circuit was also added at that time."

Mott MacDonald and Project Management Advisors are providing Technical and Project Management services for San Diego County for the Courthouse Commons Project. The Courthouse Commons Project involves the redevelopment of three downtown blocks owned by San Diego County and construction of an Inmate Transfer Tunnel between the County Central Jail and the San Diego Central Court. The tunnel will be 327 feet long, crosses the San Diego Fault and is being constructed using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This paper discusses the history and procure‑ ment strategy for the project, the technical aspects of the transfer tunnel and the con‑ struction progress of the tunnel to date.
