Resistant Tape A new oil-resistant tape for rapid insulation build-up on splices in large power cables has been announced by Minnesota Mining & Mfg. Co. Designated Scotch brand electrical tape No. 25 is made of synthetic rubber providing greater dielectric strength and resistance to high temperatures. The chemical-resistant qualities of the tape make it suitable for use in oil drilling, mining and underground [ ] cable operations, while the 40-mil thickness and extreme stretch (1500 pct breaking point) make possible smooth insulation wraps on irregular surfaces. Dielectric strength is 15,000 v and 10,000 v at 500 pct elongation. It has an electrolytic corrosion factor of 1.0 and an insulation resistance of 100,000 megohms. Circle No. 1 Hydra-Lift The Pitman Mfg. Co. announces that is now has in production a new model of the Pitman hydra-lift, recently-developed crane with hydraulically-powered boom that can be mounted on the frame of any truck, 1 ½ tons or larger. According to the manufacturer, the new model hydralift model B features a variety of improvements over the original production model, introduced late in 1950. Changes incorporated in the new model, according to officials, not only have resulted in improved crane, but also have given the unit a new profile which distinguishes it sharply from the original model. The two chief improvements in the new model are: a big increase in the unit's safety margin and the fact that it is now shipped almost completely preassembled, cutting the time and cost of installation. Rated capacities of the hydra-lift are based on the tipping factor of a 1 1/2 ton truck, with outriggers down, and thus have not been increased. Circle No. 2

For the first time, the idea of sustainable development was recognised at a high political level at the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 (UNEP, 1992). Then the governments of the world committed themselves to promote sustainable development in their national activities and international co-operation. In 2001, the European Council approved the EU Strategy for Sustainable Development (European commission, 2011). This complements and supports the EU?s so-called Lisbon Strategy (European council, 2000) on competitiveness. The revised Strategy for Sustainable Development was approved in June 2006. Recently sustainability has had an important role in policy and decision-making while the public awareness towards limits of the environment has been rising. However, the indicators of industrial sustainability satisfy primarily the needs of corporate management and global investors. The information is often broad and non-specific and might occasionally even give a false impression. Moreover, contradictions between environmental, economical and social aspects also point out the unreliability of existing sustainability indexes. Therefore, the current state of affairs serves the interests of neither the industry nor the policy makers. Current corporate sustainability indexes and indicator systems need to be assessed with scientific methods encompassing the identification of their strengths and weaknesses. This requires quantitative and qualitative assessment and synthesis of existing indexes and indicator systems, providing new data on the functionality of existing corporate sustainability indicators. Therefore, the assessment lays the foundation for the development of new, more balanced sustainability index. Our first aim in this multidisciplinary article is to analyse existing global sustainability indexes for process industry. Second, we will introduce a first version of a new sustainability index for process industry, which includes the environmental, social and economic impacts of the plant, as well as legislation aspects.

In 2005, Dyno Nobel Canada Inc, DynoConsult and CANMET-MMSL used their pool of expertise in blasting, ground control, open pit and underground mining, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a research project aimed at evaluating the role of electronic detonators in the development of a sustainable energy-efficient rock reduction process. The overall objectives were to improve health and safety in a mining environment and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The study was conducted in a quarry located in Nova Scotia, Canada, with the objective of taking advantage of the higher accuracy and flexibility of electronic detonators towards improving blast efficiency and measuring its impact on productivity in a quarry environment and energy savings. Optimising the blast sequence was the first aspect to be considered before starting to look at designing bigger blasts and achieving productivity improvements, without creating additional environmental concerns, as the quarryÆs location was representing a challenge in itself in the surrounding community. The use of high-speed cameras (500 fps) was an improved means of analysing blast dynamics during the firing sequence. Seismic monitoring and linear superposition techniques were also applied to validate the sequences to be tested in all three specific geological areas. The combination of field measurements allowed to identify the optimal blasting sequences that would then be delivered accurately with the electronic initiation systems. The data from 12 blasts (six with electronic detonators and six with pyrotechnic detonators) carried out in three different geological formations (soft, medium and hard rock) showed that the electronic blasting technology could increase rock fragmentation by 15 to 20 per cent. A more uniform distribution of rock fragment size was also obtained. Blast improvements on downstream processes resulted in a five per cent productivity increase in rock excavation and transportation, a ten per cent energy reduction in primary crushing and a 15 per cent increase in the primary crusher throughput. A prototype soft-sensor based on primary crusher data (eg energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computer process model were developed for online measurement of a rock operating work index. Furthermore, rock samples were collected and specimens were prepared in order to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock materials, evaluate the aggregate crushing work index and examine the development of micro and macro-fractures under binocular and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory testing program. A reduction in rock hardness by about 30 per cent was observed after blasting. However, the impact of the blasting method (eg using electronic versus pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage was either absent or not perceptible within the measurement technique accuracy and the number of samples analysed.

To start my talk, I thought it might be helpful for us to define the term "aggregate", so I went to the dictionary. Webster has several listings under "aggregate", and I found the following: "1. A mass or body of units or parts somewhat loosely associated with one another." Well, I didn't like that term "loosely" so I read on. "2. Crystals of one or more kinds of mineral or rock fragments." That sounded better, but I still read on. "3. Any of several hard inert materials used for mixing with a cementing material to form concrete or mortar." That sounded even better, but it should be a little broader. So I would like to define "aggregates" for you as follows: "Hard, inert fragments of rock or minerals used alone or with cementing agents to form products essential to nearly all types of construction." Usually aggregates are sand, gravel, or crushed stone, but other minerals such as clay or shale can be heated and become aggregates. What are some of the construction uses? Well, we've already mentioned concrete, as used in streets and highways, sidewalks and parking lots, airports and all kinds of building construction, not to mention bridges and swimming pools, and docks and breakwaters, just to list some of the uses. Our way of life couldn't exist without concrete. And you can't have concrete without aggregates,

The aim of this research was to develop a copper recovery process from mine tailings (0.34%Cu) using flotation followed by high-pressure oxidative leaching (HPOL) and solvent extraction. The results of HPOL using the concentrate of mine tailings obtained by flotation under the optimal conditions of the previous study shown that an efficient copper dissolution of 94.4% was achieved in an H2O media, while the copper concentration of PLS reached to be 2.9 g/L. The solvent extraction of PLS obtained from the optimal HPOL showed that 91.3% copper was recovered in stripped solution under the determined optimum conditions, in which the copper concentration achieved to be 44.8 g/L. Finally, a proposed copper recovery process from the concentrate of mine tailings was developed by combination of HPOL and solvent extraction, while a total copper recovery of 86% was achieved.

Open Pit Mine Production scheduling under commodity price uncertainty suffers from an exponentially increasing problem size as simulations and real options flexibility are used to generate and evaluate multiple production schedules. Robustness evaluation techniques attempt to evaluate a production schedule that is generated on a single set of economic parameters against several varying prices and sources of uncertainty. This approach is invalid as the corresponding optimal LOM mine plan will change for each set of evaluation parameters. Using commodity market futures and treasury bonds as production schedule economic input parameters provides fully price and time-value-of-money risked scheduling parameters that maintain a deterministic problem size. This paper will provide comparative analysis of project NPV’s coming from traditional price uncertainty evaluation based on a single fixed LOM mine plan using varying prices versus evaluation based on varying LOM plans that are both generated and evaluated using varying prices. When cross evaluating constant price mine plans against simulations, the upside potential and downside risk of a project are significantly misrepresented. INTRODUCTION The life of mine (LOM) production scheduling problem seeks to answer the question of from where and when to extract a given block within the ultimate pit limit as well as where and when to process it. Solving this problem takes into account the constraints of extracting any particular block while seeking to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the mineral asset as a whole. A direct driver of the value of a block, and there for the entire asset, is the market price of the commodity in question. Complications arise when an optimal production schedule is attempted to be solved under price uncertainty. Many solution methodologies have been proposed in an attempt to optimize under this criterion, yet there are three salient aspects that are overlooked during this process. They are: • Generating a single production schedule and evaluating it against many simulated price paths. • Failing to understand the mechanism describing particular commodity price behavior • Inappropriate risk adjustment In an effort to address these aspects of production scheduling under commodity price uncertainty, we propose a methodology to define the economic parameters as input that is applicable to most if not all production scheduling approaches. This methodology will not only simplify the production scheduling process in terms of establishing block value but utilizes the risk adjustment of real options valuation to avoid the arbitrary blanket risk adjustment of traditional discounted cash flow valuation. Our findings conclude that attempting to optimize around individual price paths is futile and using a market risk adjusted single price forecast provides a justified economic basis for production scheduling while maintaining the same problem size as a deterministic production scheduling problem.

Investigation of an extensive deposit of chromite-bearing actinolite-talc schist situated on the summit of Casper Mountain, 10 miles south of Casper, Wyo., was one of the first projects Undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., Ch. 190, 1st sess.), for which an appropriation became available August 9, 1939. During the previous summer; the Geological Survey? made? a magnetometrical survey of the area in which the schist occurred. It was exposed in several small lenses and two larger ones aggregating about 19?acres in area. Although the occurrence of chromite here had been known for many years, the only work done on the deposit was the digging of? a few shallow pits on some of the more promising outcrops. From August 23 to December 3, 1939, the Bureau of Mines investigated the larger of the two main schist bodies. Twenty-four trenches having a total length of 8,073 feet were dug across the deposit, and its subsurface extension was explored by 3,623 feet of diamond drilling. Over 32 tons of samples were shipped to the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., for reduction, analysis, and ore testing. In all, there were 853 individual samples. Geological maps, based upon examination of outcrops, trenches, and drill cores, as well as a contour map of the area were made by the Geological Survey.

China is the largest coal producer in the world. In 2012, the coal production in China is 3.65billion tonnes, accounting for approximately 49% of global coal production. The raw coal production in 2012 was 3.8% more than the year 2011. 56% of total raw coal has been washed. The increase in raw coal production also promotes technology to be developed and brings separation capacity become larger and larger in coal processing in China. At present, over 40 extra-large scale coal preparation plants (each plant has capacity of more than 10 Mtpa) are in operation in China, the largest one is 32.5 Mtpa. Heavy medium separation are widely used in new built coal preparation, the washing limit for thermal coal feed lower and lower, the equipment selection tends larger which brings the whole washing system simplified, the local equipment developed and manufactured are more and more used. By discussing designs of several typical thermal coal preparation plants and coking coal preparation plants in China, this thesis introduces the current design of China?s extra-large coal preparation plants, and sums up the prevailing design features and trends of extra-large coal preparation plants.

World wide applications for nickel use will be summarized and examples of those uses given. Nickel products are critical to many important aspects of modern society. These products are just as important for modern China as they are in other parts of the world. It is argued that future pattern of nickel use in China should be expected to be very similar to that in the rest of the developed world. Total use of nickel in products in China is already very large. In 2004, it was the largest market for stainless steel (nickel containing) in the world. A survey of Chinese stainless steel applications will be presented. Current high nickel prices have revived speculation about substitution, particularly for nickel containing stainless steels. The presentation will discuss some of the complicating factors that need to be taken into account when considering substitution. These factors are as valid in modern China as they are in other developed economies. Recent substitution efforts and the reaction to them will be examined. The Nickel Institute position regarding appropriate application of the various grades of stainless steel will be discussed. Price-motivated substitution in China, and elsewhere, will occur but it is argued that the extent will probably be limited.

ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. Weak, layered, and fragile rock mass formation, if not supported properly, is subject to roof failure thereby affecting safety and productivity in underground coal mines. Though Central Mining Research Institute – Indian School of Mines Rock Mass Rating (CMRI-ISM RMR) based well-defined support design guidelines are established, still occurrence of roof failures in underground coal mines is a real matter of concern for mining engineers and researchers. Numerical modeling techniques are successfully used by several researchers by simulating rock mass condition for stability assessment of mine openings. The analysis becomes crucial in case of weak and fragile rock formation. The present research envelops the determination of 31 cases of rock load by CMRI-ISM RMR under different geo-mining conditions followed by the development of modified Rock Mass Rating (RMR), i.e., rock mass rating dynamic ( RMRdyn) by incorporating P-wave velocity as a new parameter. The rock load determined using RMRdyn and numerical models was correlated and found in close agreement. In addition, the deviation in rock load determined by all the three approaches, i.e., CMRI-ISM RMR, numerical modeling, and RMRdyn, was compared with the actual field data. The percentage deviation obtained in RMRdyn and numerical modeling is less compared to CMRI-ISM RMR.

A frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulator-demodulator (modem) network has been devised for the Bureau of Mines mine-monitoring systems. This network permits an unlimited number of remote stations to communicate with one central station over the same pair of wires. The network operates at a speed of 4,800 Bd at distances up to 5 miles. This report describes the development and operation of the modems. The theory of operation, schematic diagrams, and printed circuit board layouts are provided. Although the modems were built for a specific application, a more general use is discussed whereby the network would operate with a typical serial channel format.

FOR MANY YEARS lead and zinc have had the so-called protection of a tariff and it is the purpose of the following brief discussion to show what' such protection actually accomplishes with a view to forecasting the possible results of the present copper tariff. In analyzing the subject, tabulations of the United States production, consumption, imports and exports, including ore and concentrates and all of the metallic products, of both lead and zinc have been made for each year since 1900. Of these data, the relationship of the imports and exports and the relative foreign and domestic prices are shown in Table 1. The conclusions drawn from these figures are listed below. 1. The United States is an exporter of zinc. 2. The United States is an importer of lead. 3. The average price of zinc at St. Louis for the last 32 years has been no higher than on the London market even though zinc and zinc ore have "enjoyed" a protective (?) tariff of varying amounts per pound for 22 years of this period. 4. The average price of lead on the New York market for 32 years has been 1.2c. per pound higher than on the London market, the tariff varying from 0.75 to 1.5c. per pound of lead in ore, and 1 to 2c. or more on manufactured lead.

I can assure you, gentlemen, that the president is not going to make an address, so you don't need to squirm in your chairs. I do want to say it's certainly a pleasure to be here. I am sorry that I wasn't here last year. Apparently my absence lent consent, and I think it would be a good warning to every member of the organization to be here for all the meetings for your own protection! It's always a pleasure to be here and meet again with some of our old friends and meet a lot of new ones. It always interests me at these meetings to meet with the rugged individuals that operate the coal industry. They have to be rugged; they couldn't be any other type of men and live in it. I also know that it takes a good rugged man to fight this game nowadays. I feel that the men who operate the coal industry are fighting a battle against socialism. You all know we are the first industry they have their eyes on. If they take over our industry, they will take over everything else.

"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. In 2007, a total of 278 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 44.6% (n=124) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=36; 12.9%) and copper ore (n=35; 12.6%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=45; 16.2%), followed by Alaska (n=28; 10.1%).

"The paper focuses on the results of the research on development of hydrometallurgical process of gold recovery from refractory sulfide flotation concentrates based on fine and ultrafine grinding. Refractory concentrates (the degree of refractoriness is 16.9%-82.6%) were chosen for testing. The efficiency of the process based on fine and ultrafine grinding to treat flotation concentrates with gold intergrown with sulfides and rock-forming minerals was shown. Based on the test work conducted, the process option was chosen. In included grinding of flotation concentrate to the size of 98% minus 20µm in a bead mill, lime treatment with air blow, CIL, filtration and detoxification of liquid phase of the slurry. This process (compared to the basic option) provides the recovery of gold from 82.6%, up to 94.0% and decreases the residual grade in the tailings from 3.3g/t to 1.1g/t at the consumption of 12.6NaCNkg/t. Based on the results of the test work and pilot plant testing, project design criteria of flotation circuit at a Russian plant was developed."
