The high mobility of gold within the plant kingdom results in detectable accumulations of gold in many plants. Concentrations vary within individuals, among species, and with seasons. From an evaluation of the chemistry of easily acce sible organs of common pecies in the northern forests, it is concluded that alder twigs (or leaves) and conifer bark scales are the vegetation components of greatest use in the earch for concealed gold mineralization. Maximum anomaly enhancement is obtained from twigs collected in the spring. Examples are given of urvey conducted in the La Ronge Domain using 1) jack pine bark (A nglo-Rouyn and Upise Lake areas) ; 2) alder twig (McLennan Lake) ; 3) black spruce bark (Rod Zone near Mallard Lake, and at Waddy Lake) ; and 4) multi-media (Tower Lake). At the latter two sites gold-bearing till is blanketed with late glacial material. Gold enrichment in the plants suggest that the roots are ab orbing gold from the underlying till. Complex processe control the uptake and retention of gold in plants. An understanding of these processes pem1its biogeochemistry to assist in locating near- urface mineralization .

This study provides an effective determination process of the interface microstructural parameters in the numerical modelling of the mechanical interaction between two different geomaterials involved with frictional-bonded interfaces, such as the interaction between backfill columns and the surrounding rocks, or the soil-structure interaction, by using the coupled finite-difference and discrete-element (FD-DE) method. Three-dimensional numerical direct shear tests were conducted on the coupled FD-DE model of the combined rock-cemented rockfill (R-CRF) specimens with the frictional-bonded interface. With the microstructural parameters determined, the macro-mechanical properties of the interface of the coupled model were calibrated to well fit with the theoretical values of the combined specimen under the direct shear condition assumed according to the Mohr–Coulomb strength criterion. Evident elastoplastic shear behaviour was observed on the interfaces, and excellent agreement was attained between the shapes of the theoretical and simulated shear stress-displacement curves of the coupled models at different servo-controlled normal stresses. Particulate-scale force chains inside the DE model of the CRF specimen were highly consistent with the force contour on the FD model of the rock specimen, demonstrating the shear stress evolution of the coupled model at different shear displacements. Parametric studies verified the effects of the deformation properties of the interface parallel bonds on the shape of shear stress-displacement curves of the coupled models. The test results validated the feasibility and rationality of the coupled FD-DE method for modelling the combined specimens with frictional-bonded interfaces or joints. Furthermore, this study provides valuable numerical modelling experience for investigating the shear behaviour at the interface between cemented backfill columns and surrounding walls by using the coupled FD-DE method.

Mining schools around the world, many unfortunately now closed, were often established to teach the techniques of narrow vein mining and associated processing to students studying part-time while working in the industry. This arrangement ensured graduates (or æassociatesÆ) had a mix of skills and knowledge invaluable to the industry.It is argued that there is still a need to educate students in these narrow vein techniques and that there will be a growing demand for such graduates with a high level appreciation of this type of mining. There is also a need for innovation in narrow vein mining and processing to develop specific technologies and allow the use of techniques applied in æbulk miningÆ to achieve improvements in productivity, safety and economic performance.This paper aims to review the situation with regard to education and innovation in narrow vein mining.CITATION:Hall, S, 2012. BH Note: This price list stresses the point that the number six strength cap should be used with all high explosives. It’s interesting that duPont chose to continue to supply the lesser strength caps – but lowered the price of the #5 or #6 to be closer to that of the #4 and #3. There were imports of the lower strength caps at the time that had to be competed against, hence the price reductions. Another interesting point on this price list is the noting on the “Red Cross Explosives” page that these explosives reduce the danger incurred during the operation of thawing. As noted many times in these articles, this problem was not to be solved for about another 16 years or so.

WHAT information do you have on precision investment casting? Please send me all available information on the removal of paraffin from oil wells and pipe lines. How can I find out how to remove magnesium oxide from lime? I want a good book on the pickling of steel. Can liquid oxygen be used as an explosive in a mine? Where can I get a bibliography on the plasticity of metals? These questions, selected from the scores of questions asked the Engineering Societies Library staff every day, indicate some of the diversity of the requests received. The samples chosen relate to interests of AIME members but the questions that come to the Library by mail, telephone, telegraph, and in person cover all fields of engineering, science, and technology. Some questions can be answered quickly; others require extensive searching. Those that can be answered in a few minutes or ten, twenty, or even thirty minutes are usually done without charge. For the more difficult questions a charge is made. In this way those requiring considerable service pay for it and the Library finds it possible to serve more persons.

An underground mining method for extracting an eight metre (26') coal horizon, containing a sandstone layer. A decrease in the thickness of the rock strata between the number two and number three seams of the Sasolburg Coal Field, has resulted in a total mining horizon approximately eight metres (26') thick. This parting varies in thickness and competency and in some areas is impractical to cut with a continuous miner. In addition, the general mining area is highly jointed. The top seam is first mined to a normal bord and pillar plan with a continuous miner. The bottom seam is then mined by selectively undercutting the stone parting constituting the floor of the top seam. In areas where this parting is between 0.75 - 2.50 metres (29.5" - 98") thick, it is suspended from the primary roof support installed when mining the top seam. Secondary, high extraction retreat mining is then undertaken in the coal pillars adjacent to the suspension supported headings in the bottom seam. Left in-situ, the parting provides lateral support to the pillar sidewalls in both the top and bottom seams, enabling high percentage extraction rates in what was previously thought an uneconomically mineable area. The paper proposed, presents the challenges and practical implications of executing the mining method, including the primary roof control of the top seam and the stone parting between scams.

FREE competition, long the controlling ideal of domestic trade within the United States, has had the fundamental geographical advantage of functioning in the world's largest area of unrestricted commerce. Goods moved back and forth across state lines, unimpeded by customs, and industrial operations have developed rapidly to meet the expanding needs of a pioneer country richly endowed with natural resources. Fifty years ago, antitrust laws were adopted to protect the competitive private enterprise principle. It became illegal for one person to combine with another to restrain trade or commerce among the several states or with foreign nations. The original legislative measures defining this philosophy were the Sherman Act of 1890 and the Clay- ton Act passed in 1914. The development of Europe and other parts of the world was influenced by different conditions which led to a different theory of trade. Here were many small nations, with limited natural resources and a thin market, and they attempted to protect their national economy by tariff walls. International business arrangements for the purpose of diminishing the ups and downs of the more competitive system --crux of the modern cartel operations-seemed a logical device to stabilize production and guard the interests of both workers and consumers. European governments as well as European industrial interests became convinced that if com- petition could be held in bounds the danger of business depressions and un- employment could be reduced.

THE Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, is engaged in the mining and concentrating of copper ores, and, incidentally, in the mining of coal and the production of electric power. The Company has been engaged in these various operations both on the mainland of British Columbia and on Vancouver island for the past forty-five years. This paper will attempt to cover their present operations in the Similkameen mining district of southern interior British Columbia. GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE DISTRICT The Interior Plateau in southern British Columbia ranges in elevation from 3,000 feet to 6,000 feet. In the vicinity of Princet0n, a depression in the Plateau forms a well defined basin which is floored with a series of nearly flat-lying Tertiary sediments containing some workable seams of lignite. From this basin, the upland surface rises gradually t0ward the south, from an elevation of 2,000 feet at Princet0n to 4,000 feet at Copper mountain, and 6,000 feet in the upper parts of the Similkameen basin, where it merges into the rugged and diversified t0pography of the Cascade system, with glacier inhabited peaks rising to over 9,000 feet. The valleys of Similkameen river and its tributaries are wide, having flaring sides and gentle slopes, and are separated one from another by subdued rounded spurs, of which Copper mountain is typical. The drainage of this district is taken care of by Similkameen river and its larger tributaries, such as Pasayten river, and Wolfe, Friday, and Whipsaw creeks. The name Copper mountain is applied to a gently arched, nearly flat-topped spur between the deep valley of Similkameen river to the west and the shallower valley of Wolfe creek tO the east. The mountain is appro-priately named from the number of copper deposits occurring on its sides and summit, some of which have been developed int0 an important producer, known as the Copper Mountain mine.

At present we are witnessing large investments in the iron ore industry, fuelled by demand from Asia. At the same time, there is a changing landscape in pricing of iron ores, with the recent demise of the benchmark system and the evolution of market based index pricing systems. From a customer perspective, it is the behaviour of iron ores in downstream processing that gives them their value; their impact on the sintering or pelletising process and subsequently blast furnace ironmaking. It is therefore important to consider this value when developing projects, making mine planning/cut-off grade decisions, and in setting quality price differentials.This paper describes the use of the Marx value in use (VIU) model to quantify the downstream value of iron ores. The Marx model consists of heat and mass balance modules for sintering, pelletising and a rigorous two-stage heat and mass balance model of blast furnace ironmaking. Mass balance and cost models are applied for steelmaking, casting and rolling. The use of a heat and mass balance allows accurate comparison of the impact of raw material properties on blast furnace operation. The impact of minor elements, such as alumina, silica and phosphorus, and metallurgical properties on ironmaking is described, and examples given for the relative value of haematite, Marra Mamba, and channel iron deposit (CID) ores.

High-Mg-content concentrates are usually treated in Jinchuan flash smelting Furnace. Because the viscosities of high-Mg-content slag is very high, the operation of flash smelting becomes very difficult. To solve this problem, the viscosities of the semi-synthesized FeO-MgO-SiO2 slag of different compositions were measured. The results showed that when in the slag the weight percentage of MgO [w(MgO)] is 6-10%, the ratio of the weight percentage of iron to that of Si02, w(Fe)/w(Si02) is 1.1-1.4 and the temperatures are within 1473-1773K, the slag viscosities increased with the increase of W(MgO) and w(Fe)/w(SiO,). When w(Mgo)<6%, the smelting temperature should be controlled at I 300°C in order to to keep the smooth operation. When w(MgO)>10%, the temperature should be kept above I 633K. When the content of MgO is higher, a lower viscosity slag can be produced by decreasing the ratio of w(Fe)/w(SiO,). The appropriate ratio of w(Fe)/w(SiO,) for Jinchuan flash smelting furnace is about 1.2.

"IntroductionSULPHUR production in Canada from all sources for the year 1953 amounted to about 375,000 tons. Except for 16,000 tons of elemental sulphur derived from natural gas, this production was in the form of by-product pyrites, liquid sulphur dioxide, and sulphuric acid. In the same year, Canadian industry imported 359,000 tons of elemental sulphur from the United States. The cost, including transportation charges, to Canadian consuming plants ranged from $35.00 to $45.00 per long ton, depending upon location.Although most of the sulphur consumed is used in the oxidized form it is often most convenient to buy sulphur in the elemental form, and convert it to sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in situ as required. This is because elemental sulphur is easily shipped and stored, weighs only half as much as an equivalent quantity of sulphur dioxide and one-third as much as the corresponding quantity of sulphuric acid, and is readily converted to these forms in a sulphur burner. A process, therefore, which could economically recover elemental sulphur from sulphide ores would be most attractive.Since the turn of the century, notable improvements have been made in extractive metallurgy, but until recently only limited attention has been paid to the possibilities of elemental sulphur recovery. This has been due to the plentiful supplies of cheaply mined Frasch sulphur which have been available on the world markets."

Magnesium alloys containing nickel, nickel and manganese, lithium, lithium and manganese, and lithium and aluminum were investigated. Melting, casting, and mechanical working techniques and the heat treatment of various compositions were studied. Amenability to cold and hot working was shown for many compositions. The magnesium-nickel and magnesium-nickel-manganese alloys failed to develop superior mechanical properties and were very low in resistance to corrosion. The magnesium-lithium series, although entirely plastic, had low strength properties. The addition of small amounts of aluminum to the Mg-Li base did not affect greatly either the ductility or the strength; further additions developed increased strength, but only at room temperature, and the alloys became brittle with age. Continued study, concentrating on the ductile lithium-rich beta phase as a base composition for ternary and quaternary systems, is recommended.

In hard siliceous sandstone strata overlying coal seams, roof bolting is often the bottleneck in the coal production cycle. In the past, these strata have been drilled by pneumatically operated stopers. Although slow drilling is cumbersome and uncomfortably noisy, the stoper was the most effective drill in these harder strata. However, because of the (U.S.) Coal Mining Safety Act, which limits noise levels for operating drills, FMC Mining Equipment developed the water-through-the-drill-steel method of drilling high-compressive-strength strata. Although water-through-the-drill steel had been developed earlier, the real impact of wet drilling techniques surfaced when the dual-boom roof drilling machines were installed at the Virginia-Pocahontas Division, Keen Mountain, Virginia, in 1974. This paper covers some of the technical details of the water-through- the-drill-steel design and its application.

TEe increased use of heat-resistant alloys (26 per cent Cr, 12 per cent Ni; 16 per cent Cr, 35 per cent Ni; 12 per cent Cr, 60 per cent Ni; etc.) in recent years has been accompanied by continued demands by the consumer for improvement in properties. The manufacturers of these materials, of necessity, have resorted to more critical studies of the basic causes of variations in fundamental properties. To keep pace with the need for augmented information, previous techniques of investigation have been refined and new test methods and instruments created. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the apparatus, experimental technique and precision of measurement that were employed in the exploration of properties of heat-resistant alloys presented in a companion paper. The detailed precautions in experimental procedure essential for attainment of accurate and comparable data at elevated temperatures cannot be too highly emphasized. The Creep Test Since the fundamental concepts of creep testing have been recognized for the past 20 years, present interest is restricted to refinements in equipment and experimental procedure. The creep-test iaboratory constructed for the American Brake Shoe and Foundry Co. is designed to permit I000-hr. tests in the temperature range of I200° to 2 200°F. with a choice of applied stress extending from jo to 50,000 lb. per sq. in. in increments of 50 lb. per sq. in. To simplify the calculation of weight combinations, the loading beams (Fig. I) are provided with counterweights to eliminate the tare. The precision of the knife-edges (10:I ratio) is such that a 10-gram weight placed on the upper specimen grip will be exactly balanced by a I-gram weight attached to the loading shackle. Check of the loading weights proved the maximum error to be 0.06 per cent. Axial alignment is provided by crossed knife-edges in the grip seats. The furnaces are similar in design to those of Crane and Company, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the U.S. Steel Corporation. An 80 per cent Pt, zo per cent Rh No. 19 B. and S. gauge wire is used as the heating element. The details of -construction are shown in the radiograph reproduced in Fig. 2. The windings are held in place on an alundum tube with aludum cement; the distribution of turns is adjusted to give a maximum temperature gradient of , I°F. over a 4-in. gauge length (Fig. 3). To avoid sharp temperature differentials at the ends of the test section, the length of the furnace is four times the gauge length. Este trabalho estuda a obtenção do cobalto metálico a partir da redução de pós de óxido de cobalto (Co3O4) usando como agentes redutores o plasma frio de hidrogênio e o gás de hidrogênio. A redução a plasma foi realizada sob tensão de 540 V e largura do pulso na faixa de 140-170ms, e da mesma forma que na redução a gás foram usadas as seguintes condições: fluxo de 300 cm3/min de hidrogênio, pressão de 530 Pa, temperaturas de 250º, 300ºC, 350ºC e 380ºC e tempos de 10 a 120 min. Os resultados mostraram que o processo de redução ocorre em duas etapas: Co3O4?CoO?Co. Na parte mais externa das partículas parcialmente reduzidas verificou-se a presença de altas concentrações de cobalto e no centro das mesmas, altas concentrações de oxigênio, o que indica que a redução se dá da superfície para o núcleo. Constatou-se que em 300oC após 120 min é possível obter frações de metal reduzido aproximadas de 0,93 quando é utilizado o plasma frio de hidrogênio, enquanto o gás permite obter frações de apenas 0,3. A energia de ativação para a redução por plasma de hidrogênio é de 35,38 kJ/mol, ao passo que a associada ao gás de hidrogênio é de 90,79 kJ/mol.

At Cameco Corporations&apos; Cigar Lake Project, large excavations are developed on the 480 Level and 500 Level must remain stable for at least 15 years to host underground processing infrastructure. Following the successful dewatering of the mine in October 2009, subsequent internal rockmechanics investigations augmented by third party technical investigations; determined that to keep the back of the Water Flush Crusher/Run-of-Mine (WFC/ROMs) excavation stable; required a rehabilitation strategy to mitigate deterioration/deformation of the WFC walls and intersection pillars. The mechanism of failure propagating the movement of the excavation walls is understood to be controlled by the presence of a dominant E-W striking and steeply dipping foliation within a relatively weak and mildly altered rockmass sub-parallel in strike with 14 meters high walls and an intersection span approaching 15 meters. The application of open and resourceful communications between site mining engineers, geologists, contract mining staff, construction management experts, corporate mining and civil engineers, and third party technical experts resulted in a multi-faceted short-term ground support strategy consisting of standard bolting and screening, deep-seated modified-strand cable bolts coupled with heavy gauge mesh straps, rockmass reconditioning using low-pressure grout injection, and horizontal cable-lacing for the intersection pillars applied in lifts using a top-down methodology. The intention of the short-term strategy was to stabilize the excavation so that a long-term structural steel support installation - consisting of composite concrete walls, and arch support applied to the side walls and crown of the back - could be constructed safely. This paper summarizes the evolution of the short and long-term ground support strategy and criteria for the WFC/ROMs excavation developed using elements of civil, mining and hydrogeologic design.

The purpose of this paper is to look at the costs of tailings disposal, and in particular the comparative costs of different disposal methods in different situations. Costs are often the hidden design parameter. We know that they are important but sometimes feel that it is not very respectable to talk about them in public. It is better from a public relations point of view for it to appear that the decision-making process is driven by environmental factors or best practice rather than looking for the cheapest option. But this presumes that the two are mutually exclusive and this need not be so. These issues are discussed later in the paper. It is also commonplace for the scale of the mining operation to change with time, typically involving increased throughput rates and total tonnage. New ideas in tailings disposal make their appearance. The regulatory attitude can change. Having made a decision about the disposal method at the time of original feasibility study and design it is easy to suppose that the mine is æstuck with itÆ. But that also need not necessarily be so. Careful costing of options may reveal that a switch in method could be cheaper in the long run. The designer will often tend to think in terms of initial earthworks and site development costs. Aspects of power consumption, labour, and periodic campaigns to move tailings pipelines and carry out embankment raises are either overlooked or not given the same emphasis. This can distort the evaluation process. It is productive to think in terms of dollars or cents per tonne as a basis of comparison, not just the total sums. Tailings disposal can cost from as little as 10 - 20 ó/t to over $1.00/t which is a big range. There may be good and unavoidable reasons for the high figure but there would need to be to justify being so far over the industry average. At the same time, mining and processing costs, at least for gold, are around $15 - 20/t. Viewed from this perspective tailings disposal will always be a relatively small component of the annual budget.

THE tendency all over Europe, just as it is with us, is to go to the use of turbines for new construction or replacement of old steam or even gas engines. &apos;The lower construction cost and the lower operating cost, when they can have high steam temperatures and pressures, together with their efficiency, is the cause of this change to turbines, both high and low pressure. The present trend is to equip plants with modern, efficient steam boilers, turbines, etc., and gradually work into high-pressure superheated steam equipment to accomplish a saving. One company has just completed a 375 to 400 lb., 700 deg. superheated steam installation and turbo-blowers with this end in view. Some of our new steam plants are using 350 lb. working pressure.

Background of Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting is discussed; especially slag chemistry relating to copper solubility, slag fluidity and impurity behavior. In December, 2000, Mini-pilot Flash Smelting test runs were carried out at Outokumpu Research Oy to produce blister copper from Chilean concentrate and white metal and from a mixture of them. Tested slag types were iron silicate slag, ferrous calcium silicate slag and calcium ferrite slag with different slag compositions and different concentrate/white metal ratios. The test runs were successful. The fluxing effect of copper oxide was clearly demonstrated and ferrous calcium silicate slags remained fluid on a very wide liquidus range. The distribution of arsenic between ferrous calcium silicate slag and blister copper is much higher than between iron silicate slag and blister copper. This successful test run with the new slag type offer new possibilities in Direct-to-Blister process design.
