"The Scheelite Dome tungsten-bearing skarn property, central Yukon Territory, is in metasediments in contact with a quartz monzonite intrusion. Contact metamorphism to biotite-muscovite- andalusite hornfels and calc-silicate hornfels is superimposed on low-grade regionally metamorphosed rocks represented by quartz-mica pelitic schist and muscovite-biotite pelitic schist.Metasediments are likely Precambrian in age, even though Rb-Sr whole-rock analyses indicate an early Paleozoic age (511±41 Ma); this apparently too young radiometric age is due to partial loss of radiogenic strontium during regional metamorphism. The minimum age of the quartz monzonite intrusion is Cretaceous at 90.4±2.6 Ma (K-Ar on biotite) and its initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio is 0.7121. The high initial ratio of the intrusion is due to the addition of radiogenic strontium from the metasedimentary country rocks and perhaps an underlying older basement.Scheelite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite mineralization occurs in diopside-zoisite skarn pods within the calc-silicate hornfels near the quartz monzonite intrusion. The source for lithophile tungsten is probably the same as for the granitic magma, namely Precambrian sialic basement.IntroductionThe Scheelite Dome tungsten skarn property is within the Mc-Questen map-area (NTS: 115P/16),28 km northwest of Mayo, Y.T., at latitude 63°47' north and longitude 136°15' west. The property can be reached by helicopter or by four-wheel- drive vehicle from Mayo.This paper summarizes the geology of the Scheelite Dome property, which has been described in a general way by Little (1959) and Cathro (1969). Geological mapping and sampling were done by the first author (nee Steffler) during June 1979. Field work was supplemented with detailed work at the Department of Geological Sciences of The University of British Columbia during 1979 and 1980 (Steffler, 1980). Whole-rock chemical analyses were done by Cominco Ltd."

U.S.S.R. Resumes Sales of Titanium Sponge. - Against a background of increased U.S. titanium sponge supplies, the Soviet Union is offering limited quantities of this commodity to the U.S. market at approximately $10.00 per pound, down from $25.00 per pound last year.

Equilibrium in the reaction H2(g) + O[in liquid iron, cobalt, or nickel] = H2O(g) has been investigated over wide temperature and composition ranges. Oxygen has been found to obey Henry's Law in each of the three metals at 1550°C. The standard free-energy changes for the above reaction are given by: (1550° to 1700°C) ?Foco = -45,360(±290) + 16.16(±0.16)T (1490° to 1700°C) ?Fo Ni = -48,170(±220) + 16.12(±0.12)T (1465° to 1700°C) where the standard state for dissolved oxygen is the I wt pet solution. If in a vertical, downward miscible displacement, the transition zone between the displacing and displaced fluids is neglected, a criterion for stable displacement can be obtained by considering a small hypothetical protrusion of one of the fluids into the other. This criterion leads to the definition of the well-known critical rate, uc = kg p/p. The consideration is further extended by taking into account the transition zone that develops as a result of diffusion and mixing. A generalization of the previous criterion leads to the definition of another characteristic rate, the stable rate, which in actual miscible drives will be less than the critical rate. In such drives, the entire transition zone is stable at rates less than the stable rate. At rates between the stable and critical rates, the displacement is only partly stable, i.e. part of the transition zone adjacent to the displaced fluid is in an unstable position. From that part of the transition zone viscous lingers will develop. At rates greater than the critical rate the entire displacement is unstable and viscous lingers will develop more strongly. Results of laboratory experiments are in agreement with the expected behavior based on the theoretically deduced stability of the displacement. INTRODUCTION The simplest form of miscible drive in an oil-bearing formation is the injection of a fluid that is completely miscible* with the oil under reservoir conditions. In general, such a fluid, a solvent for example, is less dense and less viscous than the oil present in the formation. If it is injected into a horizontal homogeneous layer, gravitational forces will lead to the formation of a gravity tongue of solvent in the upper part of the layer and the adverse solvent-oil viscosity ratio will cause viscous fingers to develop. If, however, the solvent is injected up-structure into ,a dipping layer, gravity has a favorable effect, because it tends to keep the less dense solvent up-structure. Tongue formation and viscous fingering are consequently reduced and it is even possible that they will be suppressed completely. Viscous fingering and gravity tonguing are the consequences of the instability of the displacement. A stable displacement cannot result in growing viscous fingers and/or growing gravity tongues. Since large amounts of oil can be bypassed if there is viscous fingering and/or gravity tonguing, the stability of a miscible drive is very important with respect to the recovery efficiency of the drive. The stability is of particular importance in miscible-slug drives, as it determines how quickly the miscible slug between the displaced and displacing fluids will be distorted and broken up, after which the drive is no longer completely miscible. Stability is thus a most important factor in determining the success of a miscible drive, and it is considered that the aspects of stability considered in this paper will make a useful contribution to existing theories. Consideration is given only to vertical downward displacements, in which no gravity tongues can develop and which are therefore simpler than downward displacements in sloping layers. THEORY CRITERION FOR STABLE DISPLACEMENT Let us consider a vertical column of a homogeneous permeable medium saturated with oil. A solvent less dense and less viscous than the oil is injected at the top of the column at a constant rate; in the column the velocities of oil and solvent are assumed to be uniform. Diffusion and mixing of oil and solvent will at first be neglected, i.e. we assume that solvent and oil are divided by a sharp interface. An additional assumption is that the interface is horizontal. Continuity of pressures exists at the interface, because no capillary forces are present between the two miscible fluids. Syncrude Canada Limited is presently studying commercial production of heavy minerals from plant tailings of the openpit A lhabasca tar sands operation. When tar sands are processed and upgraded to synthetic crude oil, heavy minerals can be removed f rom the extraction circuit and beneficiated to provide concentrates of zircon and titanium minerals. Calculated recovery rates indicate that crude oil production capabilities of 105,000 barrels per day would provide 26,000 tonnes of zircon and 114,000 tonnes of titanium minerals annually. The titanium minerals concentrate is a mixture of ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile; it could be used as recovered or upgraded to synthetic rutile. With the consrruction of further synthetic crude oil plants in Western Canada, a large reserve of heavy minerals will become available.

"In many gold deposits, a reasonable amount of the gold that remains in the cyanide leach tailing is associated with pyrite. Some gold plants have found it economical to incorporate gravity circuits on the cyanide leach tailing to recover the gold bearing pyrite before subjecting it to fine grinding, then recycling the ground pyrite back to the cyanide leach circuit. For low grade gold deposits the loss of gold bearing pyrite is exacerbated as the broader process economics normally favour a coarse grind (> 150 ?m). An option that has received attention over the last decade is to recover the gold bearing sulphides in the milling circuit by gravity, similar to the widely-practiced gravity recovery of free liberated gold. The modelling and simulation of a gravity gold circuit in a milling flowsheet is relatively simple compared with a gold bearing pyrite circuit, as the recycle advantages and breakage functions for gold and pyrite are quite different. This current work represents an attempt to simulate the gravity recovery of gold bearing sulphides in a milling circuit that also incorporates fine grinding, using relatively simple simulation models. The simulation results are further explored with reference to the economics of this type of circuit.INTRODUCTION It is well known that gold is associated with pyrite in most sulphide gold deposits and that the amount of gold associated with pyrite will vary from deposit to deposit. Most of the gold associated with pyrite is liberated in the grinding circuit during the processing of a gold ore. However, some gold remains occluded in the pyrite and is lost in the final leach tailings. Little information is available in the literature on methods to enhance gold liberation from pyrite by specifically removing pyrite, either in the grinding circuit or from the final tailings stream, and grinding it finer. One of the earliest record of this approach is described by King (King, 1949) where pyrite present in Witwatersrand gold ores was recovered by circular jigs and Johnson barrels followed by fine grinding of the concentrate prior to cyanide leaching. Dominy et al., 1970, provides information on the use of Yuba jigs to recover pyrite from the discharge end of ball mills. Again, the jig concentrate was ground to a fine particle size before cyanide leaching to recover the liberated gold. Unfortunately, no information is provided in these articles on the additional gold recovery from implementing these circuits in a flowsheet. Martins et al., 1993, provides details of a gravity circuit using Reichert cones and spirals to recover gold bearing pyrite from a cyanide leach tailings followed by fine grinding of the pyrite concentrate in a Tower mill. The ground concentrate returned to the front end of the already installed leach circuit. Overall recoveries were increased by some 2% to 4% depending on the amount of gold and pyrite in the plant feed."

High horizontal stresses were recognized to impact roof stability more than 60 years ago. Since then, numerous measurements associated high horizontal stresses with difficult ground conditions. This paper presents case histories illustrating the practical usage of roof stress determinations for helping assess stability, not only in the case of high horizontal stresses but also of low stresses. Examples are given of high stresses associated with faults, mine design changes, quantification of stress shadow effect, and anistrophy. The paper concludes with a comparative evaluation on the effect of various stress fields on ground support requirements.

A computerized moving average technique was developed to interpolate coal seam characteristics between sample points. The interpolative method coupled with multivariate regression analysis and simulation procedures was used to forecast coal properties not readily obtained from an analysis of drill core samples. Coal property forecasts were of two kinds: (1) specific mine property forecasts that are suitable for mine product control and yield a good approximation of the local variation along both the vertical and horizontal axes of the seam, and (2) regional estimates where much of the local seam variation is smoothed out, but the general trends are maintained. Forecasts of the volatile matter, ash, total sulfur, and the heating value for part of the Pittsburgh seam located in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia were in good agreement with independent evaluation data. Spatial configuration for preparation characteristics, particularly, the effect of crushing on sulfur release, low-and high-temperature carbonization properties, the Hardgrove grindability index, the coal hardness index, gasification variables, and hydrogenation factors were constructed for the same area of the Pittsburgh seam. These forecasts may be developed from drill core data collected in the exploration phase of mining. The results, which may take the form of a series of maps, are useful to mining, chemical, and combustion engineers, to economists and mine managers, as well as to coal users for mine design, economic analyses, energy forecasts, utilization studies, mine product control, and environmental control and programming.

"Syncrude Canada Ltd. is developing new concepts in lease-closure landscape design for its Oil Sands Leases 17 and 22 in northeastern Alberta. Closure planning is becoming an integral part of the planning cycles and of the lease operation. By incorporating closure planning into the day-to-day operation, the company will achieve acceptable lease closure in an economical manner. Ultimately, Syncrude will achieve lower operating costs through innovation in mine planning and a reduction in residual liabilities.New concepts being evaluated for lease-closure landscape design include: designing for closure, use of landforms and natural analogs, self-armouring bouldery ground, robustness in design, landform grading, terrain analysis of reclaimed land, geotechnical hazard assessments, choices in closure design timeframes, passive maintenance, determining post-closure monitoring goals, engineering tailings, engineering other substrates, use of test plots and field demonstrations, geomorphologic monitoring of reclaimed lands, defining closure goals, and visiting other mines. These concepts are being formalized under the new discipline of Landscape Engineering."

This paper presents the fundamental study of the temperature distribution in a reforming planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) using mathematical modeling and experimental testing approaches at Versa Power Systems (VPS). In order to investigate the on-cell temperature distribution under high rates of Natural Gas direct internal reforming (DIR), both the computer simulation approach and the experimental testing approach have been developed. In this work, comprehensive in-house DIR and SOFC models were developed and employed for the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based 3D computer simulation. The current SOFC module has been corrected to take into account both the on-cell electrical leaking effect and the stack stage structural resistance. Meanwhile, an instrumented single-cell test jig with multiple thermocouples was built, and a series of experimental tests were performed at various conditions. The numerical results based on the single-cell jigs are in very good agreement with the physical test results.

During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

"IT WOULD TAKE a braver man than I to try to forecast the future of mining exploration far into Canada's second century. Even to look ahead ten or twenty-five years we must review the figures of the fairly recent past -and I have found this quite a time-consuming but interesting job -in order to find trends and project them into future years. The trends to which I will refer are: firstly, the annual expenditure on exploration and its relation to value of output; secondly, the discovery rate and its relation to production initiations; and thirdly, the methods by which discoveries have been, and will be, made. Exploration Expenditures Figures on the annual expenditure on mining exploration in Canada have been collected and published for some years by the Do-minion Bureau of Statistics. These have some unavoidable limitations; e.g., in the varying definition between one company and another of what comprises ""Exploration"" and in the difficulty of getting complete returns. However, although the actual figure for a given year may be subject to question, I believe that the relative figures from one year to another are reasonably reliable. There is also a lapse of time between the collection of data and publication -the last published figures are for the year 1963. In bringing the figures up to date to 1966 I have canvassed eight of the larger mining and exploration companies and obtained their figures for 1963 to 1966 inclusive, and then averaged these for each year and applied the progression to the 1963 figures."

We describe a new software product designed for the net present value optimization of multi-open-pit blended ore operations in which it is desired and/or necessary to dump some or all of the waste rock produced in the course of operations back into the voids created in the process of ore extraction. The software product simultaneously decides over the entire life-of-mine which material to mine in which year, once mined what to do with it, and where to put that material which it has decided to waste, all subject to annual blend and capacity constraints.

Introduction When considering power in Alberta, there automatically come to mind ideas of either hydro or thermal generation, leaving in one's thought an uncertainty as to which one would propose. There is frequently an obvious source of power in some locations on our fastflowing rivers, the major possibilities being described in the report on Surface Water Supply and Water Power of Alberta issued by the Alberta Government in 1948, but it must be realised when reading that report that the sites so described will require extensive geological and other surveys before they can be exploited, and account must be taken also of the transmission distances involved in each instance. From a conservation point of view, where water power can be economically developed and power transmitted to the load centres, this should be done, and our thermal resources should be husbanded for our coming generations, especially if our water resources are falling owing to glacial shrinkage.

A major thrust in Industrial automation over the past few years has been the exploration and incorporation of higher level (supervisory and optimizing) control strategies aimed at more fully exploiting the existing control system infrastructure. There is little doubt that this is worthwhile pursuit, however, one must not lose sight of the maintenance and development requirements of the basic control system. Statistics on loop performance indicate that this too is an area of considerable potential. In this paper the authors look at some of the less elegant, but arguably equally important issues in mineral processing plant control. The focus is on controller structures, loop tuning, sampling, filtering, and some of the other principal components of the regulatory control foundations. In many cases significant improvements In control performance can be achieved by getting back to the basics.

MINING is one of the major industries of the Rocky Mountain region and since the United States became involved in the present World War, all mines have been called upon by the Government for the maximum production of the strategic metals necessary. Operating under the most adverse conditions, such as priority requirements, slow delivery of necessary material and equipment, labor shortages, and freezing of all wages, which still permitted some industries to pay higher rates than were allowable in the mines, thereby drawing labor from the mines; and the United States Employment Service continually giving mine labor certificates of availability; these and many other problems made mine operation particularly difficult. Yet, in spite of these obstacles, the mining industry, either through its own resources or through Government subsidies in the form of loans or premium prices for strategic metal, have and still are making an all-out effort to meet Government demands. They, without question, have played a major role in assisting the war effort.

Northern ecosystems are dominated by a harsh physical environment which dictates a need for biological adaptation. As yet, it is unknown just how these adapted plants and animals will tolerate industrial development. Our work, sponsored by university, government and industry, is part of an effort to evaluate this developmental impact. Our present studies and the results to date will be discussed. Other problems to which the environmental student may address himself in the future to ensure against environ-mental degradation will be suggested.
