One of the most frequently asked quesitons is: "Where is copper (price and usage) going?" I will not attempt to forecast either the future price of copper or the future growth of the copper industry; rather I would like to discuss the current trends experienced in the smelting and refining terms and conditions for sales and/or purchases of copper concentrates. A brief review of contract language and terms, together with a review of the common jargon, I believe, would be helpful. To accomplish this review, I will first list what I consider the four basic parts or sections of a basic ore contract and then illustrate basic terms with calculations.

This is the first in a series of progress reports on the longwall subsidence research program at the Bureau of Mines Denver Research Center. As part of this program, the Bureau and the Utah Power and Light Co. are cooperating on a study conducted at the Deer Creek Mine, which is directed toward developing the capability to estimate the surface subsidence resulting from longwall mining in a geologic, topographic, and mining environment common to coalfields in the Western United States. A monitoring network has been established at the Deer Creek Mine to measure subsidence over four adjacent longwall panels. To date, two panels have been mined. Subsidence began as the first panel was mined and continued for 1 year following completion of the panel, during which time the adjacent panel was mined" A maximum of 2.7 feet of subsidence occurred over the two longwall panels mined at a depth of 1,500 feet. Because of the length of time that subsidence continued after mining, the final subsidence profiles and angle of draw have not yet been determined.

Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) are vast structures that respond to site-specific characteristics, rate of production, placement techniques, and the physical and mechanical properties of tailings. As a common denominator, TSFs are in some degree vulnerable to failure due to liquefaction, poor management, slope instability and/or unusual climatic events. In practice, stability of TSFS is determined by calculating a minimum Factor of Safety (FOS) using the Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM). However, it has been proven that relying exclusively on the limit equilibrium approach is not accurate because it is basically a static method that does not take into account the stress-strain distribution and displacement experienced by the constitutive materials of a TSF. In order to overcome these limitations of the LEM, the finite element method - Shear Reduction Technique (SRT) has been used as a more reliable tool for TSFs stability assessment. This paper presents a comparative stability analysis between an upstream tailings storage facility (UTSF), and a water retention tailings dam (WRTD) under static and pseudo-static states using simplified and rigorous LEMs and the SRT. Additionally, and taking into consideration the intrinsic uncertainty of tailings properties, sensitivity and probabilistic analyses in the form of Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) and the Point Estimate Method (PEM) are applied to determine the Probability of Failure (Pf) and Reliability Index (ß) of each TSF. It is shown that the friction angle of UTSF?s foundation and the core?s cohesion of the WRTD are the main variables that govern stability. Further analysis shows that the WRTD has a higher reliability index and a lower probability of failure than the UTSF.

Nucleation theory is applied to martensite nucleation in substitutional iron alloys. Composition fluctuations are neglected, and a steady rate of nucleation is predicted for any composition and temperature. The maximum rate of nucleation (as a function of temperature) is shown to be measurable only for on extremely narrow composition range, being too great or too small outside this range. A number of experimental observations, including completely isothermal transformation in some alloys and composition-dependence of M. temperature in others, are compared with the calculated behavior. IN a previous report,¹ nucleation theory was applied to the formation of isothermal martensite in an Fe-Ni-Mn alloy. The experimental observations of Cech and Hollomon² were accounted for quantitatively. It now is of interest to examine the predictions of nucleation theory with respect to martensite transformation in substitutional iron alloys of other compositions. Since Fe-Ni alloys have received considerable attention, both as to their transformation kinetics and their free energies, they will be treated in detail, although the results apply with equal validity to other substitutional alloys. In substitutional alloys, where composition fluctuations can be neglected in volumes of critical nuclear size, the rate of nucleation of martensite in subcooled austenite is¹ n - Nv exp (—W*/kT) [I] where the free energy of formation of the critical size nucleus is W* = 8192 p (?² s³) [2] In the expressions for n and W*, the symbols have the following meanings: N is the number of atoms per unit volume; v, the atomic vibration frequency; 8, a function of the elastic constants of austenite and the shear angle of martensite; , the austenite/mar-tensite inter facial free energy; and ?fc is the free energy change per unit volume accompanying the transformation. Jones and Pumphrey² have determined the austenite to martensite free energy change as a function of nickel content and temperature for Fe-Ni alloys. Their expression is ?F = 2500 C + 1.25 (1 —C)?FFc cal per mol [3] where C is the atom fraction of nickel, and ?Ffe is the free energy change per unit volume for pure iron as tabulated by Zener4 (or, equivalently, Fisher"). From Eqs. 1 to 3, it is possible to calculate isothermal nucleation rates as a function of temperature and composition for Fe-Ni alloys. The only unknown parameter is (?² s³). The best value of this parameter for Fe-Ni alloys, determined from M. temperatures in a manner to be described shortly, is (?² s³)= 9.92 (10)21 cgs units [4] Taking this value of (?² s³), C-curves for isothermal nucleation were calculated for Fe-Ni alloys of several compositions, and are plotted in Fig. 1. It is evident from Fig. 1 that completely isothermal nucleation of martensite in Fe-Ni alloys can be observed experimentally for only a very narrow range of compositions. Cech and Hollomon find that a nucleation rate of about 10' nuclei per cc per sec is as fast as they can follow dilatometrically, and a rate of about 10-1 nucleus per cc per sec is about the slowest that can be measured conveniently. If the nucleation rate is to lie between the limits 10-1 10 the nickel content of an Fe-Ni alloy must fall in the atomic fraction range 0.299 5 C 5 0.302. Nickel contents lower than 0.299 correspond to nucleation rates too great to follow, and those higher than 0.302 to nucleation rates too slow to measure in a reasonable time.* In view of the narrow corn- position range in which successful isothermal measurements can be made, it is not surprising that only one substitutional alloy has been described' that comes close to being in the proper range.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for mine planners and engineers to evaluate on a conceptual basis if a shaft or a ramp is most suited for their particular underground access requirements. Mine planners and engineers are often raced with the decision of choosing which method of underground access is best suited for their particular requirement. Underground access can be provided by a shaft, ramp, adit, or slope for either exploration and/or actual production operations. This paper will focus on the construction cost and schedule differences between sinking a shaft and excavating a ramp which are currently the most typical access alternatives used in the western United States. It would be wrong to state that one method is superior to the other in every case. There are many variables to be addressed, and the degree of sensitivity of each of them will eventually dictate which method is the most suited to the particular circumstances. This paper compares the construction cost and schedule or sinking a shaft to excavating a ramp at different depths given different ground and hydrological conditions. This comparison provides mine planners with "rules or thumb" that may be applied to the access selection process.

"Half of the input energy to aluminum reduction cell will be lost as waste heat which could be studied for possible recovery. Since price of energy is increasing and the main production cost in primary aluminum industry is energy, so waste heat recovery consideration will be interesting. One of the possible choices for recovering is from aluminum exhaust gases that needs minimum modifications for reduction cell and has no influence on cell heat balance which is vital for the operation. By using heat exchangers with in-line and staggered tube arrangements which placed before fume treatment plant (FTP) we will be able to recover enough amount of heat. The main challenging problem which is necessary to overcome will be the heat exchanger material and its design because of corrosive and dusty exhaust gases from potroom. In this paper, a desalination system with six effects of evaporator is proposed for producing distilled water by using recovered heat from hot exhaust gases. The calculated amount of produced distilled water is around 27,000 / in this specific suggested desalination plant. The suggested desalination plant is based on Hormozgan Aluminum Company data (Hormozal) in Bandar Abbas, Iran which is constructed by the Persian Gulf.IntroductionWaste heat losses arise both from equipment inefficiencies and from thermodynamic limitations on processes. The exact quantity of industrial waste heat is poorly quantified, but various studies have estimated that as much as 20 to 50% of industrial energy consumption is ultimately discharged as waste heat [1]. In order to achieve a final decision for establishing the waste heat recovery plant in any type of industry, a strong feasibility study is mandatory. Also, we need to remember that the possible amounts of energy and suggested process plant for recovery have to be investigated before starting any feasibility study. This kind of study which is important to be finished before moving to feasibility step is mainly a theoretical study, and was done for the Hormozgan Aluminum Company (Hormozal). In addition to the exhaust gases from the potroom, the exhaust gases from anode baking plant appear to have a better potential for waste heat recovery compared to potroom exhaust gases. The average temperature of exhaust gases from anode baking kiln is 120°C higher than the exhaust gases temperature in the potroom. This needs further investigation in a different study, because this study is just focusing on potroom exhaust gases."

This Bureau of Mines report discusses uranium in situ leach mining in the United States to acquaint the public with an overview of this emerging mining technology. This report is not intended to be a technical discussion of the subject matter, but rather should be used as a reference source for information on in situ leaching. A list of in situ leaching publications is included as well as engineering data tables for almost all of the active pilot-scale and commercial uranium in situ leaching operators. These tables represent a first attempt at consolidating operational data in one source, on a regional basis. Additional information is given that discusses the current Bureau of Mines uranium in situ leaching research program. Also included is a listing of various State and Federal permitting agencies, and a summary of the current uranium in situ leaching operators. Finally, a glossary of terms has been added, listing some of the more common terms used in uranium in situ leach mining.

Preliminary to an experimental study of selected physical properties of helium and related gases) the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center conducted a data-gathering literature survey. This report combines the results of the 1961-63 literature search into a usable format. The data accumulated on the physical properties are presented in tables and graphs. The data in the tables were chosen for exact representation and comparison of specific values. An attempt was made to select the most reliable and consistent value available for a given property without extensively analyzing each source reference. The methods of evaluation are discussed later. The graphs show trends and anomalies which may be obscure in tabular form. The abstract highlights the impact of flocculants used in the middle thickener of a copper-molybdenum plant on both process water quality and molybdenite floatability. The study investigates the effect of a starch-based flocculant (wheat starch) on the efficiency of the middle thickener and molybdenite flotation. The findings indicate that the presence of starch influences the settling behavior of particles with different shapes, and the dosage of starch affects both molybdenum recovery and the presence of copper minerals in the molybdenum concentrate.

INTRODUCTION The Sunnyside mines of Kaiser Steel Corp. are lo¬cated on the west flank of the Book Cliff Range, a tongue of the Wasatch mountain range in Utah. The mines are 193.12 air km (120 air miles) southeast of Salt Lake City and 40.23 km (25 miles) east of the town of Price. The area has a semiarid climate with an an¬nual rainfall of 304.8 to 381 mm (12 to 15 in.) and a temperature range of -23.3 to 32.2°C (-10 to 90°F). The base of the Book Cliff Range is approximately 1981 m (6500 ft) in elevation with some mountain peaks in excess of 3048 m (10,000 ft) (Fig. 1). The Sunnyside mines were opened in the late 1890s and have been operated continuously since that time. Kaiser Steel leased the No. 2 mine in 1942 and pur¬chased the entire property in 1950. There are three mines adjacent to one another, each with its separate access, ventilation, and haulage. The three mines en¬compass an area extending 12.87 km (8 miles) along the outcrop and dipping northeasterly 2.41 to 3.22 km (11/z to 2 miles) into the Book Cliffs. During 1975, only the No. I and No. 3 mines were operating to sup¬ply 908 184.7 t/a (1,000,000+ stpy) of clean coal to the Kaiser Steel mill at Fontana, CA. Sunnyside coal is blended with coal from the Kaiser Steel mine near Raton, NM, and with purchased coal from noncompany sources to form the mix for the coke ovens. At that time, Sunnyside operated three longwall units and five to seven continuous miner units. Typical production for that time came from one miner unit pillaring an area not conducive to longwall mining; one or two miner units on construction or modernization projects, and the remaining units used to develop future longwall panels. Longwall mining has been a part of the Sunnyside scene since 1961 when the first panel was set up in the lower Sunnyside seam of the No. 3 mine. Through 1975, 27 longwall panels were mined (Fig. 2). Of the more than 47 173 604 t (52,000,000 st) of clean coal that were taken from the property through 1975, 6 350 292.9 t (7,000,000 st) were mined by longwall methods. Coal was brought to the surface in 4.5-t (5-st) mine cars and crushed to -152.4 mm (-6 in.) before entering the preparation plant. Coarse coal is cleaned by Baum jigs and fine coal (-28 mesh) is cleaned in flotation cells. The coal is reduced to 50.8 x 0 mm (2 x 0 in.) and belted to an aboveground storage pile with a ca¬pacity of approximately 113 398.1 t (125,000 st). The coal is gravity fed through two 1.52-m (5-ft) diam culverts directly into railroad cars, which pass beneath the storage pile through an arched excavation. Eighty-four 90.7-t (100-st) cars make up a unit train which makes the round trip to the steel mill in four days. Additional trains are scheduled in as demands dictate. Loading rates in excess of 13 607.8 t/h (15,000 stph) have been attained. Geology The coal seams of this area are of Cretaceous age and are classed as a medium volatile bituminous coal. coal, with a sulfur content less than 1 % and 6 to (20-mile) zone of the Book Cliffs, and this area is owned or under lease by either Kaiser Steel or US Steel. Coal in adjacent areas is noncoking but an excellent steam coal, with a sulfur content of less than 1 % and 6 to 7% ash. Sunnyside coal contains 40% volatile, 53% carbon, less than 1 % sulfur, and 51/2 to 61/2 % ash after washing. There are two minable seams throughout most of the Sunnyside property known locally as the upper and lower Sunnyside. Separation between the seams varies from less than 300 mm (1 ft) near the southern boundary adjacent to the US Steel Columbia mine, to over 12.19 m (40 ft) in areas of the No. 3 mine in the center of the Sunnyside property. The upper seam varies in height from 1.2 to 1.98 m (4 to 61/2 ft) while the lower seam varies in height from 1.52 to 4.28 m (5 to 14 ft) in areas of No. I mine where the two seams apparently come together. The majority of early work was con¬centrated in the upper seam which has a stronger roof and a lower sulfur content. When Kaiser Steel began mining the No. 3 mine in the early 1950s, it mined in the lower seam beneath the old workings with conven¬tional and continuous mining equipment. Numerous bounces and pressure points created by unextracted pillars and barriers in the upper seam made this a low¬production, high-cost mine and brought about the ad¬vent of the first longwall system. The first unit, while small by today's standards, successfully mined panels that had been all but given up and saved the mine from closure. There were areas that could not even be mined by longwall because of the erratic extraction in the upper seam. The system was successful enough to allow operations to gain access to and develop virgin areas of the upper seam. Development of longwall mining in the No. 3 mine has been confined to the upper seam since late 1964. With the almost complete extraction afforded by the longwall system, it is felt the lower seam can be successfully worked in future years (Fig. 3). In most of No. 1 mine, only the lower seam (or lower seam and upper seam combined) is minable, except in the northwest portion where a rock split has again separated the seam into two 1.83 to 2.13-m (6 to 7-ft) thick beds. In this area, the upper seam or upper split is being mined. The separation between seams at the present workings in this area varies from 0.609 to 6.1 m (2 to 20 ft). It is hoped that most of the lower split can be mined using shield supports and/or what¬ever new technology is developed in the coming years. The coal seams in this area dip to the northeast at an average grade of 10%. The dip near the outcrop reaches 22% and gradually decreases downdip. Over¬burden ranges from a few meters at the outcrop to 762 m (2500 ft) over some of the deeper workings. In the next several years, some overburden will be in excess of 914 m (3000 ft) as the lower mine workings extend ever deeper under the Book Cliffs. To cope with the

The new caving megaprojects that are planned to go into production in the next decade have scheduled horizontal developments at very high rates, which are difficult to achieve. Research has been conducted that seeks to model the construction times for underground developments to determine the feasibility of achieving the planned rates. However, these previous attempts do not consider all the operational aspects that make up the mine development cycle. Here, we present a discrete event simulation (DES) model that individualizes each unit operation of the development cycle to determine the construction rates that new projects will be able to attain. The developed model was applied to the New Mine Level (NML) of the El Teniente Division (DET). The results indicate that it would be impractical to achieve the advance rates scheduled in the original plans if the unit operations of the mine continue to be executed using the status quo. The metres developed after six years in the sections analysed can be significantly improved by changing the maintenance strategy for the equipment (457 metres increase), orepass availability (194 metres increase), and the initial planning sequence (1 598 metres increase). It is recommended that the mine implements a flexible maintenance strategy, defines a strategy to ensure and increase orepass availability to contractors, and makes use of current simulation tools for a more robust development sequence planning.

Several processes for the production of ultra-clean coal for electrode carbon were developed in Germany prior to and during World War II . These processes have been investigated since the end of the war by the British and U. S. Government missions . As the reports of the investigations are not readily available to the public , it is the purpose of this paper to present the information which has been obtained regarding the methods by which ultraclean coal was produced . Almost all the ultra-clean coal was used in the manufacture of electrodes for the production of aluminum and magnesium . Standard raw materials for making these electrodes are pitch coke and petroleum coke , which are nearly ashless . The inclusion of ash in the electrode carbon results in lowered efficiency and impure metal from the reduction process . Petroleum coke and pitch coke were in very short supply in Germany during the war , so that it was necessary to augment the supply with carbon produced from coal . In the emergency , methods were developed to clean coal which had never before been economically feasible . However , a demand for nearly ash-free coal might develop in the United States if a shortage of petroleum coke were to occur at the same time as a strong demand for light metals . Other uses of ultraclean coal are in direct hydrogenation of coal , in production of activated carbon, and for special fuels . Specifications for electrode carbon are rather severe owing to the necessity for producing pure metal . Maximum amounts of impurities allowable in American practice are as follows : Total ash , 1.0 percent ( in finished coke , 0.7 percent ) Silica , 0.08 percent Ca or Na, or their sum , 0.12 percent Sulfur , 2.0 percent Ba , Ni , Cr , Mn , Co , and V are objectionable in very small amounts . The most important process for ultra cleaning of coal in Germany was froth flotation . Froth flotation had been used widely there to process washery -water sludges and to recover coking coal from high - ash fines . Its use was indicated , therefore , when the demand for ultra low-ash coal arose . In two plants the coal cleaned by froth flotation was treated with acid or caustic to lower further the ash content . Another process used on an industrial scale was that of dissolving the coal substance in the middle oil from direct hydrogenation of coal under controlled pressure and temperature . The resulting paste was heated, filtered , and the oil distilled off . The residue was a low-ash organic material that could be carbonized for electrode carbon or could be hydrogenated directly . Several other processes had been developed to the laboratory or pilot - plant stage but had never been used on a commercial scale . These processes included cleaning by centrifugal action , cleaning by electrostatic action , and cleaning by forming a paste with oil in water . The coal-preparation plants at the Carl Alexander mine , Augusta Viktoria mine , and Kőenigin Elisabeth mine are described in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7389 : " Coal Preparation Practice in Western Germany" , by Thomas . Fraser and M. G. Driessen . Most of the special equipment used at these plants is described in the above publication .

This report describes a project conducted by the Bureau of Mines in which the accurate directional drilling of a borehole was demonstrated with the objective of intercepting a designated target. The project was conducted at Navajo Dam in northern New Mexico at the request of the Bureau of Reclamation. Borehole survey and drill logs are provided in an appendix. The trajectory of the demonstration borehole was designed to intercept a 5-ft-radius target at the final or "punchout" distance of 885 ft. The elevation of the borehole at this distance was within the target; the borehole punchout coordinates were 8.81 ft southwest of the target. As a result of the demonstrated accuracy, the Bureau of Reclamation has contracted the accurate drilling of boreholes as long as 600 ft from the inside of a short tunnel, to control water seepage in the right abut- ment. This resulted in a substantial cost savings compared to the orig- inal plan of constructing a longer tunnel and drilling 150-ft boreholes.

A growing demand within the minerals industry for sustainable development and the introduction of carbon taxes have resulted in a significant focus on improving the energy efficiency of comminution circuits. However, in this drive for improved energy efficiency the role of classification has been overlooked. Inefficient classification and large recirculating loads reduce circuit capacity, result in over-grinding and higher specific energy consumption.It is well understood that classification increases mill capacity; therefore, closed ball mill-cyclone circuits have become an industry standard. However, due to limitations in cyclone classification efficiency, the optimum recirculating load is limited to about 250 per cent. A simple relationship quantifying the effect of classification efficiency and recirculating load on grinding circuit capacity is presented in this paper. The possibility of improving the capacity of ball mill circuits by improving classification efficiency is discussed, considering the current practical limitations of classification equipment. Simulation tools were used to evaluate circuits with cyclones and with high frequency screens to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency. The investigation also identified potential benefits to flotation recovery due to a reduction in over-grinding.CITATION:Jankovic, A and Valery, W, 2012. The application of the law of supply and demand to the sale of crude oil is generally conceded, but the motives underlying the buyer's (refiner's) demands are not always obvious to the seller (producer). In some cases this obscurity has led to the conclusion that the refiner may be unnecessarily particular when he selects one crude and rejects another. This preference, however, is very largely the reflection of the refiner's product demands and the quality of the stocks obtainable from the selected crude. The purpose of this paper is to point out critical characteristics of the major classes of refined products and to show how crudes vary in their suitability for such products. With relatively few exceptions, available processing methods and addition agents make it theoretically possible to produce any type of refined product from any crude source, although it may not be economi-cally sound to do so. The widespread application of thermal cracking for converting higher boiling stocks into gasoline is well known. More recently cracking and refining in the presence of catalysts9 have been developed, as well as various processes for polymerizing lighter hydro-carbons into gasolines having desirable characteristics.6 For several years, selective solvents have been applied commercially to refining inferior quality kerosene, Diesel fuel and lubricating oil distillates .3 Improved methods for refining lubricating oils from crude residua,4 formerly suitable only for fuel, are now in use and a number of special solvent processes are available for dewaxing lubricating oils to low pour point.5 These improved refining methods have been developed not only to meet the demand for improved product quality but also to enable the refiner to obtain quality products from crude sources that would not yield such products by the older refining methods. In many cases, the utilization of these modern refining tools necessi-tates an appreciable expenditure for equipment as well as added manufac-turing costs, and their application therefore must be justified economically. Despite the availability of such tools, the added processing costs involved and yields obtainable may render their application entirely impractical. Reverse flotation process is a method used for remove impurities from the most abundant iron ore; the itabirite. In this process, amines surfactant are used which may prevent the reuse of water in processes. The Fenton oxidative processes and the synthesis of nanoparticles are highlighted in catalysts application and in organic substances degradation. This study performed the synthesis of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) to employ them as catalysts of the modified Fenton reaction to degrade an amine surfactant used in reverse flotation and compared with the classic Fenton (Fe2+) reaction. CuNPs were synthesized by chemical reduction, pH 11 with copper sulfate and ascorbic acid. They were characterized by UV-Vis, DRX and DLS and Zeta potential. The nanoparticles had diameters of 125.00 to 17.22nm and stability during 50 days. The tests were prepared with 180mg/L of amine and 1890mg/L of H2O2 in 150 minutes. The degradation was assessed by UV-Vis and FT IR. The results showed that CuNPs degraded 84% of the surfactant while Fe2+ reached 89%. In this way, both processes can be used for surfactant degradation, although the CuNPs method is easier to operate at neutral pH.

Viburnum, located in the foothills of the Ozarks in south-east Missouri, is the site of a modern lead mining and milling operation. Two mines are currently producing a total of 5,000 tons per day and a third mine is in the final development stage, with full production scheduled for late this year (1964). These mines will supply the tonnage required to keep the Viburnum mill operating at a full capacity of 7,000 tons per day for many years. The efficient underground mining operation is completely trackless. Drill jumbos are used to break the ore in a room and pillar method of mining. Transloaders, or St. Joe shovels, and trucks do the loading and hauling. The Viburnum mill has a world-wide reputation as a most efficient operation. This is due to the extensive use of automatic process controls, and labour saving materials handling facilities. The St. Maurice Forges.—The deposits of iron-ore in the St. Maurice district, in the rear of Three Rivers, were probably known to the Indians and .Jesuits, but it is not till 1667 that any discovery is reported. The affairs of the colony were then in the control of the " West India Company," who amongst other monopolies had a right to all mines and minerals." Specimens of the iron-ore were examined in Quebec. in 1668 by the Sieur la Potardière, who reported unfavorably on them. In 1671, Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac, was appointed governor of La Nouvelle France ; and in the original manuscripts relating to his administration some allusion is occasionally found to the St. Maurice iron mines.?
