The geology and early history of the discovery of potash in Saskatchewan as described by Heber Cole (1) and R. V. Thompkins (2) has dealt with the distribution of the salt beds and their potash content. From the many bore holes through the Prairie Evaporites the outlines and contours of the series have been well established. The thickest section of the salt beds lies to the north of the "barren" area and forms a belt running easterly to a point west of Yorkton. The "barren" area is a region where the salt has been redissolved and the strata have slumped down, to fill the voids. This area is of interest from the standpoint of rock mechanics. The potash-rich beds extend both east and west of the region. mentioned and the top of the Prairie Evaporite is at a depth below 3200 feet from the surface near Saskatoon and dips southerly at an average rate of about five feet to ten feet per mile.

"In the application of the BIOX® technology, high tailings grade (2-16 g/t) may be generated with a decrease in overall gold recovery, which sometimes make it economically unattractive. This paper investigated the causes of the high tailings grade by using samples from the Bogoso BIOX plant. Partial chemical analysis, diagnostic tests and cyanidation optimisation studies were conducted to invoke understanding into the high tailings grades. Diagnostic study on the tailings showed 48.34% of gold in carbonaceous matter, 17.12% in quartz, 13.40% as liberated gold, 11.51% imbedded in sulphides and the remaining 9.65% in carbonates. Optimum cyanidation recovery of 90.4% was established for the BIOX concentrate at 7 kg/t NaCN, 40-50 g/L activated carbon and residence time of 40 hours. The recovery was sensitive to carbon and cyanide concentrations but additional cyanide was not economical. High preg-robbing indices of 72.7% and 64.4% were recorded for the BIOX product and the flotation concentrate respectively. This confirms the inability of the BIOX process to deactivate carbonaceous matter, which remains a serious precursor for low overall gold recoveries and high CIL tailings. INTRODUCTION Gold ores may be broadly classified as refractory and non-refractory. Non-refractory ores are easy to treat but refractory materials require complicated flowsheets for metal extraction (Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001; Marsden and House, 2006). As near surface non-refractory gold deposits are getting depleted, the increasing price of gold and increasing demand for gold, have encouraged many gold producing companies to treat refractory ores for gold recovery. The refractory behaviour of these ores may be due to the presence of sulphides, tellurides, cyanicides and/or carbonaceous matter. Refractory ores do not respond well to conventional cyanidation as the gold is either occluded by or in solid solution in sulphides, or is in association with cyanicides (Marsden and House, 2006). Further, carbonaceous matter preg-robs gold during leaching (Osseo-Asare et al, 1984; Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001). The two major causes of refractoriness are the presence of sulphides and carbonaceous matter, and these render the ore double refractory (Nyavor and Egiebor, 1992). Oxidative pre-treatment processes such as high pressure leaching/oxidation; biological oxidation, ultra-fine grinding and roasting are required to render refractory ores amenable to conventional cyanidation (Marsden and House, 2006). Biological oxidation, however, has become the preferred pre-treatment route because it is more environmentally friendly and convenient even where only partial oxidation is required. Comparative tests have demonstrated that bioleaching can achieve the same or better results than roasting or pressure leaching in terms of gold recovery (Yannopoulos, 1991; Brierley, 1997). Further, biological treatment processes are more cost-effective, environmentally friendly and safer."

The topic of the industrial applications of mineralogy is a vast field which can be adequately covered only in a large book or by a two or three semester course. This paper recalls experiences of the writer in this field, a task requested by the Process Mineralogy Committee. Therefore, this paper is largely an account of the industrial mineralogy problems I was involved with, since my student years, Although I will treat each application only briefly, it is hoped that they will illustrate to the students in the field how varied are the applications of mineralogical methods. In this respect, I want to emphasize that it is important for mineralogy teachers to point out the usefulness of mineralogical methods much more often in their courses. Not only does that help prepare young individuals for industrial careers, but also it arouses their feeling of consciousness of public responsibility which is an important attribute for the world's scientists. When professors utilize the varied applications in their teaching of mineralogical methods students then understand better the significance of learning those methods and appreciate the many years of necessary university preparation. The first time I was involved in an application of mineralogical methods was about 1944 as a student of Professor Paul Niggli. He was asked to study the problems of ice crystallization on wings of airplanes. The ice formed at high altitudes and during the winter. This was not outside his realm of expertise because he was the main initiator of the Snow Research Institute on the Weissfluhjoch in Switzerland. I believe that the work of this Institute was an important factor in stimulating much of the snow research subsequently carried out at the United States Army Snow Research Center, which was located at that time in Willmette near Chicago. Dr. Bader, one of Paul Niggli's former students, was the Director of Research at Wilmette at that time and for quite a number of years thereafter. A mineralogist-crystallographer can make important contributions to a better understanding of the problems of snow and ice formation, avalanche hazards, and the prevention of hail. Effective management of ore loss and dilution is essential for successful grade control and short-term mine planning due to their significant impact on the economic, environmental, and technical aspects of open-pit mining operations. Factors influencing ore loss and dilution fall into two categories: (i) controllable factors like mine equipment selectivity and blast design and (ii) uncontrollable factors such as spatial heterogeneity of ore and waste blocks on a bench. This paper focuses on the second category by applying spatial entropy concept to capture heterogeneity at the scale of selective mining units. In this paper, global spatial entropy is used to assess the impact of spatial heterogeneity between ore and waste blocks on the magnitude of ore loss and dilution, while the local spatial entropy can guide the allocation of blast movement monitoring balls pre-blast. High values of the global spatial entropy indicate increasing potential of ore loss and dilution, which reduce profit. Furthermore, the study investigates the relationship between spatial entropy, cut-off grades, blast movement, dig-limits optimization model running time, and profit through a number of case studies. The results show that changes in cut-off grade and blast movement can significantly affect spatial entropy post-blasting and increase ore loss, dilution, and profit reduction, revealing the need for controlled blasting at specific bench sections. Additionally, the results demonstrate an exponential increase in profit reduction due to ore loss and dilution with a rising global spatial entropy.

Este trabalho objetivou comparar, por meio de experimentos desenvolvidos em uma fundição, através da adição de três inoculantes diferentes (IM-22 com FeSi-Ba/Zr, G 20 com FeSi-Ba) e IMSR 75 com FeSi-Sr), para observar as características da vida util de ferramentas na usinabilidade das peças, microestrutura e propriedade mecânica. A metodologia da pesquisa se baseou em analisar principalmente pelo processo de fresamento o ferro fundido cinzento GG-25 inoculado diferentemente, denominado de acordo com a Norma DIN EN 1561. As formas de avaliação dos resultados terão como base uma análise quanto ao desgaste da ferramenta, acabamento superficial, análise microestrutural, composição química e propriedades mecânicas do material da peça. Os resultados mostraram que dentre os inoculantes aplicados o com Sulfeto de Estrôncio (SrS) apresentou-se mais estável termodinamicamente que as amostras inoculadas com os outros dois inoculantes, pois ele levou a uma variação da energia livre de Gibbs mais negativa e portanto mais favorável a formação de núcleos com raio crítico (rc) maiores, o que permitirá uma solidificação com nucleação heterogênea. Todavia o respectivo inoculante também foi mais eficiente na formação de uma microestrutura mais estável, com maiores quantidades de células eutéticas e vida útil do inserto mais longa quando usinado.

I went to the University of Michigan, where I got an A.B. degree in 1902; then to the Michigan College of Mines at Houghton, graduating from there in 1904 with a B.S. and an E.M. What was your first job in the mining industry, Mr. Turner, and what were you paid? In the summer of 1902, 1 was a field assistant for the U. S. Geological Survey in southwestern Idaho and southeastern Oregon, working under Israel C. Russell, professor of geology at the University of Michigan, who incidentally, had just returned from an expedition to study the effects of the eruption of Mt. Pelee, on Martinique. I was paid $60 a month and found; in addition to doing geologic and hydrographic work, I cooked many of the meals for a party of four, and wrangled four horses. I slept for four months under the stars, without a tent.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current literature on the use of calcium chloride and ligninsulfonates as dust suppressants with respect to potential adverse effects on health or the environment. Calcium chloride poses little internal hazard to man and animals, but toxicity to vegetation in and around the area of application should be expected. The effects, however, should be considerably less than those observed from using calcium chloride as a road deicer. Except for trout, ligninsulfonates seem to pose little direct systemic toxicity problems in aquatic organisms, animals and man or any problem with local vegetation. Because of a greater volume of information on its use and effects, calcium chloride is recommended over ligninsulfonates.

HOLDING the annual dinner-dance of the Institute at the Waldorf-Astoria had become such a tradition that there was widespread regret when it became known that the demolition of the building to make way for a huge office structure would perforce bring to an end the long and enjoyable series of gatherings our Institute had held there. This year the . Commodore was the place at which it was held and the commuters on the New York Central and the New Haven railroad systems, at least, found it a more convenient place for them. Except for the famous "Hoover" dinner, which will probably set a mark for all time, it was the largest dinner the Institute held, 1000 being present, and it taxed the facilities of the hotel to the utmost.

Traditionally, there have been three main methods for iron removal in the hydrometallurgical production of zinc. These methods are atmospheric precipitation of jarosite or goethite and pressurised precipitation of hematite. Jarosite precipitation is without doubt the leading and the most commonly used technology for iron removal. However, jarosite precipitation has some drawbacks, such as a low iron content (and, thus, high residue volume), high moisture content after filtration and often a high zinc content. These features make any environmentally acceptable way of using or disposing of jarosite more expensive, as compared to hematite and goethite. The importance of environmental regulations has grown in the zinc industry during the last decade, which will have an increasing effect on new investments. Hematite has several advantages over jarosite, such as a high iron content, low moisture and low zinc content. An important advantage of hematite is that it is suited for further use in the cement industry. However, until now the need for autoclave equipment has limited the spread and implementation of hematite precipitation in the zinc industry. Outokumpu Technology Oy has recently developed an alternative method for iron removal, which is the atmospheric precipitation of hematite. A patented method for precipitating hematite at atmospheric pressure is presented and compared with conventional methods for iron removal. The process conditions, the quality of the hematite precipitate and the environmental aspects are also discussed.

To meet the business objectives of a metallurgical project, there is often a need for new and untried technology or equipment, whose very novelty can present serious risks to meeting those objectives. The key risk management approach is a rigorous stepwise progression from theoretical evaluations and laboratory tests to pilot plant trials. These must be followed by demonstration-scale trials before final construction of a commercial scale plant, paying particular attention to the magnitude of the scale-up between phases. Success depends on following a well-defined program, not eliminating any steps, and ensuring adequate resources are available to the development team. Chapter 6 discusses the nature of technology risks to metallurgical plant projects, and the rigorous management practices needed to identify, analyze, evaluate, and avoid or mitigate them.

"The importers and manufacturers who import or produce products with packaging containers are charged a recycling fee in Taiwan. The amount of waste packaging containers used for calculating the recycling charge is based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers which might be underestimated. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explores its distribution. The sampling survey and ratio estimation are conducted for estimating the recycled amount; while the refuse sampling method for municipal solid waste composition is employed to estimate the un-recycled waste packaging containers. The estimated total amount of waste packaging containers in 2011 generated by households in Taiwan is 696,511 m.t., of which, 79.49% of the waste packaging containers were recycled and 20.51 % were landfilled or incinerated. This study shows that the amount of waste packaging containers declared by importers and producers is underestimated around 20%.IntroductionWaste packaging containers including iron cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, paper containers, aluminum foiled paper packs are officially announced to be recycled in Taiwan. In order to create the economic incentive for raising recycling performance, associated manufacturers and importers are charged a recycling fee to subsidize recyclers. The amount of packaging containers declared by importers and manufacturers is used for calculating the recycling charge and recycling rate. The importers and manufacturers might underreport their producing (importing) amount to pay less recycling fees. Therefore, the estimated waste packaging containers based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers is usually underestimated. Related previous studies about waste packaging containers recycling in Taiwan are done by Hsu and co-workers [1-4]. Hsu and Kuo [1] estimated total production values of recycling and evaluated the performance of recycling performance based upon the estimated production values. Hsu and Liu [5] provided a cost analysis of recycling for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Bor, Chien, and Hsu [2] presented a market-incentive recycling system for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Hsu and Kuo [4] provided an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes for waste packaging containers recycling. Lee and Hsu [ 6, 7] explored the distribution, fee rates, and collection rate of waste containers. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explore its distribution."

"INTRODUCTION The Denver region coal field, covering an area of approximately 7,640 square miles, extends from the Wyoming State line to the middle of El Paso County, Colo. The coal in this region is subbituminous in rank. Much of it is used as domestic fuel. During the last decade the production of coal in this field has remained fairly constant at an average of 2,600,000 tons per year. This production has come from 50 to 60 mines, 88 to 90 percent of the production being from the section of the field north of Denver.According to the Standard Specifications for Classification of Coal by Bank of the American Society for Testing Materials 4/ the coals in this region are classified in the Subbituminous B and C group. On the as—mined basis, they contain about 22 percent moisture and average 9,600 B.t.u. per pound. They are noncoking and slack to a variable extent when exposed to the weather. This is characteristic of subbituminous coals."

O presente estudo objetivou avaliar as diferenças no processo de flotação entre as frações -0,150 +0,038 mm e -0,038 mm, bem como a redução de custo no processo de flotação. Verificou-se que as frações apresentam resultados bem distintos em recuperação mássica, recuperação metalúrgica, seletividade, razão de enriquecimento e teor de sílica no concentrado, condições ideais de adição de reagentes e qualidade final de concentrado e rejeito entre as frações e também se comparada a ao experimento controle, composto com a mesma amostra sem ser fracionada. Através dos testes executados segundo o planejamento fatorial, foram estabelecidos os pares de variáveis ótimas para a flotação para cada fração distinta e as possíveis otimizações utilizando-se a ferramenta estatística. Os resultados obtidos dos testes de bancada apontaram que a amostra composta e as frações separadas apresentam comportamentos distintos quanto às variações dos fatores dosagem de amina, dosagem de amido e pH de flotação e que os resultados do processo melhoram significativamente em relação ao processo sem o tratamento fracionado.

Retreat mining is one of the most hazardous operations conducted underground. One of the keys to miner safety and an efficient recovery of the reserves is to design adequately sized production pillars to prevent pillar squeezes, excessive pillar spalling, severe floor heave, roof falls, and pillar bumps. Currently, few pillar design approaches are available which consider the abutment pressures generated by the gob. The Bureau of Mines is developing a method called Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) to aid in the design of retreating sections. Back analysis of 42 case studies indicates that ARMPS can be helpful in predicting stability during retreat mining operations.

"The common-held view of the future of copper mining is one of declining quality of mineral resources and increasingly limited long-term development options. This decline, in turn, is viewed as inevitably leading to increasing economic, socio-political and environmental costs. As a result, new technologies and innovations will be required to mitigate cost escalation. The future is therefore typically summarised as a battle of a ‘below-ground’ declining quality asset base pushing costs upward versus ‘above-ground’ technology and innovation driving costs downward. The role that high quality new mineral discoveries could play in mitigating industry cost pressures is typically understated, if considered at all. New high quality discoveries can be mined at lower cost than existing assets and potentially if discovered in the right locations within a more amenable contemporary environmental and socio-political setting. Such deposits, once discovered, would improve the overall quality of the industry asset base, as well as benefitting their owners substantially through higher margins. However, to target new high quality deposits explorers need some understanding of the nature of high quality copper mines in the long-term future. Conventional scientific and economic techniques for analysing the future of copper supply, generally by studying the project pipeline, ignore as yet undiscovered resources and also struggle to fully incorporate the multiple internal and external factors that could impact upon copper mining practices in the future.Scenario analysis is specifically designed to consider multiple factors interacting in the future, and is thus more creative than simply looking at the visible project pipeline. The use of scenarios is therefore potentially capable of providing insight into aspects of the future of copper mining about which little is currently known or that remains considerably uncertain. In this study, the Oxford University Scenarios methodology was employed to analyse different plausible futures for copper mining and the consequent implications for exploration targeting strategies. The scenario analysis highlights two key dimensions or axes that serve to map out potential industry futures: firstly the technical and economic optimisation of the existing industry; and secondly the generation of new prospects or ‘search space’ for the copper industry. These two axes in turn frame four different scenarios for the future of the copper mining industry. These copper mining scenarios are then compared to the 20 largest existing copper mines and projects, and their owners, to determine if any represent an appropriately robust exploration targeting proxy: none do. The paper therefore concludes that efforts by industry are required to generate mine concepts that would be viable across all scenarios, and thus act also as exploration targeting proxies. In the interim, companies will have to seek to build portfolios that create an overall robust asset base, out of individually less robust assets. Failure to do this implies that consequential, irreversible strategic decisions lie ahead for the copper mining industry, which may be a threat to both incumbents and the very industry itself. It is usually assumed that chemical specifications are sufficient for steel to be used for case carburizing, and if the steel analyzes within the ordinary limits specified for steel for this purpose, no difficulty traceable to the steel used should be encountered in obtaining satisfactory results in the case carburizing and hardening. Much work has been done to determine the effect of various alloying elements on the rate of carbon penetration, etc. but, to our knowledge, little if anything has been published in regard to the effeet of the quality of the steel on the final results in the hardening of case-carburized steel parts. The writers believe that the structure of the case both before and after quenching is greatly affected by the actual condition of the steel itself as made, and that for good results in the case-carburizing and hardening departments, the steel should be of the best possible quality as regards non-metallic impurities. It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the presence of excess dissolved oxides in the steel, as made in the melting furnace, affects permanently the results obtained in carburizing and hardening and that it is possible that the presence of dissolved oxide call result in total unfit-ness of low-carbon steel for case hardening purposes. When races and rolls for roller bearings are made from a low-carbon steel, case carburized and hardened, it is of primary importance that the results of this treatment be of the highest quality. It is necessary, therefore, that in the case-carburizing work each detail be rigorously checked to avoid any defects which would cause the loss of much time and material. The case carburizing with which this paper deals was done in under-fired oil furnaces. The temperature of each furnace is controlled by means of a platinum platinum-rhodium thermocouple, in connection with a potentiometer indicator and potentiometer recorder. The temperature of each furnace is registered every 15 min. by an operator, who is continually checked by the automatic recorders.

"Refractory materials are essential for all high-temperature applications in industry. Depending on the position in the furnace and specific process requirements, refractories are produced from several raw materials, such as dolomite, magnesite, bauxite, graphite or chromite. Most of these raw materials are not rare but strict quality requirements limit the producers of refractories to only a few deposits in the world. Thus, raw material supply is a critical factor for the production of refractories and accounts for 40-50 % of the total costs of refractories.A possible way to lower dependency on raw material supply is recycling of spent refractories. Main challenge in recycling is the separation of different brick types from each other and the removal of impurities, such as steel or slag. The European FP7 project REFRASORT aims to apply sensor-based sorting for separation of spent refractories. Sensor-based sorting is known from food industry, recycling and mineral processing and has proven its reliability. Nevertheless, some adjustments are necessary compared to applications in mineral processing because of other sensor-types and a higher number of products in one sorting step. This paper presents the results of feasibility tests for sensor-based sorting of refractories with near infrared spectroscopy and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Both sensors showed the potential to identify different brick types but the most promising results were obtained using LIBS technology. INTRODUCTIONRefractories are solid, ceramic products, which can sustain temperatures of more than 1500°C, without losing their stability or shape. Bricks of refractories have to withstand corrosion in contact with liquid steel or slag. Various high temperature applications, such as the production of glass, steel, copper or cement, require high quality refractories. The quality requirements of refractory bricks are strict, because small impurities can lower the thermal strength significantly."
