"Understanding controls on groundwater and surface water flow and quality at mine sites throughout all mine stages is critical to effectively manage environmental impacts over the entire mine life. Monitoring forms is an essential component of this proof of understanding. Typically, monitoring programs at mine sites have been developed in the framework of existing conditions. However; recognition of the challenges of climate change and the performance of mines during recent extreme events in Australia has highlighted the need to develop monitoring programs that are resilient and responsive to changing environmental conditions. Water monitoring programs need to be effective under a range of environmental conditions, potentially not historically experienced.This emerging challenge requires cross-disciplinary teams to work together to understand issues including: representativeness of background conditions to longer-term conditions at the mine site sensitivity of mine and closure designs to changing climate and hydrologic conditions methods of performance (eg water quality or quantity) failure during extreme climate events such as flood or extended drought.These understandings come together in a detailed conceptual and, in many cases, numerical hydrologic model that considers the mine-water environment under a range of conditions. The groundwater, surface water and water quality monitoring programs that are developed from the conceptual model need to be sufficiently responsive to be effective in the face of such changing conditions, with results in turn informing the conceptual model. Extended drought, major floods and changing weather patterns can alter recharge and discharge areas, oxidation profiles and ultimately, the contaminant flux estimates that would have contributed to mine design parameters and performance. Unless these effects are considered in the spatial and temporal design of the monitoring program and within the parameters monitored, the resultant program may fail to capture data that are critical to evaluating environmental impacts from mine sites.Developing and implementing a water monitoring program that considers these issues can build confidence in mine performance under a range of conditions, leading to increased confidence by all stakeholders in long-term mine performance during and after closure.CITATION:Weaver, T R, Price, A D, Patterson, O and Germs, W J, 2013. "In this paper a review of the current status in recycling technologies for cathode ray tubes is given for both the glass and phosphors. Particular emphasis is placed on the opportunities for the recovery of the rare earth elements (REE) from the phosphor coatings. This is placed in the market context of alternative virgin sources and some of the advantages and disadvantages for REE waste recovery. Future opportunities are explored and also some experimental detail on a low cost leach system is presented. INTRODUCTIONThe disposal of cathode ray tube (CRT) based colour televisions has accelerated world-wide with the development of high definition flat screen panels. The total number of colour CRT televisions that have been sold in the United States in the mid-20th century is estimated to have been over 2 billion (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2007), with high current rates of disposal. It is estimated that of the 20 million televisions annually discarded, 78% are send to landfill (Nnorom, Osibanjo & Ogwuegbu, 2011). However, this easily accessible item of electronics cannot only be turned into a valuable resource using the right recovery procedures, it can also prevent the substantial environmental contamination arising from improper disposal. In this review we focus on previous and current work performed on the recycling of CRT based televisions. Due to the increasing demand for rare earth metals, the main focus will be on the possibilities and challenges of recycling the fluorescent phosphor powders on the CRT’s panel glass.CATHODE RAY TUBE’S GLASS RECYCLINGConventional cathode ray tubes consist of three main parts, the panel, the funnel and the neck (Figure 1). To produce the different colours on the screen, the inside of the panel is coated with a matrix of hundreds of thousands of small phosphor dots. Each dot is one of three types of coloured phosphors, emitting either red, green or blue light. These emit light when excited by a beam of electrons generated by electron guns located in the neck of the CRT. These beams pass through holes in the shadow mask and excite the phosphor coating on the inside of the panel, to give light of variable RGB composition, see Figure 1."

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research and development on a coal-burning gas turbine. This work includes the development of (1) turbine blades resistant to coal ash erosion, (2) equipment to feed coal under pressure to a turbine, (3) an efficient combustion system, and (4) equipment to remove coal ash from the gases that drive the turbine. Initial emphasis is being placed on testing the first turbine ever equipped with blades designed specifically for use with coal as the fuel. Operating tests with this turbine are now in progress. This paper describes the Bureau's coal-burning gas turbine development program and progress on this operating test.

Hatch forecasts that an increasing share of seaborne traded iron ore will be ultrafine, being either concentrate or pellet feed. This provides several challenges for the iron and steel industries, but the principal concern is: how much ultrafine iron ore can be consumed on sinter strands and with a minimal effect on productivity?This paper will identify new supply by project through 2020. Demand will be estimated for sinter production and practical steps will be identified to increase ultrafine consumption in sinter strands. The long-term iron ore price will be forecast to balance supply and demand. "The Sumitomo Toyo Smelter and Refinery commenced its operation in 1971 with three Peirce- Smith (PS) converters. “2 hot – 1 blowing” operation was practiced, that is one of two available converters was blowing and the other was standby in a hot state while the third converter was under repair. After several improvements, the stack time ratio reached around 90%; and processing 5 batches a day became possible.As a result of the expansion program of the Toyo smelter and refinery that started in 2001, the converter operation pattern was shifted from “2 hot – 1 blowing” to “2 hot – 2 blowing” with the installation of second converter blowers and an additional ladle crane.In 2005 a, the fourth converter was installed and “3 hot – 2 blowing” operation began. Also, with improvements experienced in the anode furnaces and the anode-casting wheel operation, today, the number of cycles has been increased up to more than 8.5 a day.The treatment techniques of fugitive gas containing sulfur dioxide from converter furnaces have been gradually reinforced, and the fixation rate of treated sulfur is currently being maintained at more than 99.9%. This paper introduces the operations described above, and the improvements in environmental management techniques for the Toyo PS converter operation."

Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de critérios objetivos para a garantia de validade da mecânica da fratura elasto-plástica monoparamétrica, utilizando o parâmetro integral J como descritor dos campos de tensões, deformações e deslocamentos à frente de um defeito do tipo trinca. O mais importante na vertente monoparamétrica da mecânica da fratura é garantir que os campos de tensões no corpo de prova laboratorial sejam comparáveis com os existentes em uma estrutura real para cujo projeto as propriedades retiradas do corpo de prova serão utilizadas (conceito este denominado similitude). Para estabelecer critérios objetivos para a existência de similitude, esse trabalho comparou os campos de tensões obtidos de estruturas de referência sob alta triaxialidade de tensões (MBL) com aqueles obtidos de corpos de provas de mecânica da fratura em escala de laboratório. A matriz de análise permitiu a determinação dos limites de deformação M para geometrias C(T), SE(B) e SE(T) de diversas configurações e para uma faixa de propriedades de material característica de aços estruturais aplicáveis a vasos de pressão e dutos. Os resultados demonstram a baixa restrição à plasticidade de corpos de prova SE(B) e SE(T) com trincas rasas e os efeitos de profundidade de trinca e espessura nos resultados de M. Ainda, alguns comportamentos inesperados foram evidenciados, como no caso em que (para condições particulares de profundidade de trincas) corpos de prova mais finos apresentaram maior restrição a plasticidade do que amostras mais espessas. Sendo assim, o trabalho oferece uma base objetiva para que a similitude seja garantida nas avaliações de integridade estrutural baseadas na mecânica da fratura elasto-plástica suportada pela integral J, seja com seus valores críticos (Jc) ou curvas J-R.

The assembly procedures for nine different wire rope terminations used in the mining industry are presented in a format and manner to facilitate training and to provide points where inspection of the termination should be performed. The nine terminations addressed are: Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve & Thimble, Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve, Wedge Socket, Swaged Socket, Turn Back Loop with Sleeve & Thimble, Thimble Splice with Four Tucks, U-Bolt Clip & Thimble, Zinc Poured Socket, and Epoxy Resin Poured Socket. The manual was prepared to be used primarily for field type mining operations or training where high capacity machinery is quite limited. It is nut the intent of this manual to suggest that the procedures presented are those to be used by manufacturers or other commercial enterprizes. A different set of procedures may be more appropriate where ideal space and equipment resources are available. The assembly procedures were derived from standard industrial practice, manufacturer's recommendations, and the open literature on the subject. These same procedures were used to prapare test specimens for an extensive series of pull and axial fatigue tests. The results of these tests indicate that these procedures are satisfactory in all respects. This manual is to be used as part of a complete training program. Although a brief glossary is included, there has been no attempt to make this a primer on wire rope. The selection of wire rope termination hardware, like the selection of the wire rope, is a subject not covered by this manual. The reader is cautioned that there are various sources for such hardware and this selection must be done carefully.

THE phosphate-rock industry is built upon natural deposits of rocks and minerals in which the element phosphorus is present as a phoshate. The term ?phosphate rock? is a general one, applied to certain rocks of different degrees of consolidation and of diverese origin, charater and occurrence, composed of intimate mixtures of several phosphate minerals, largely submicrocrystalline, usually calcium phosphates, in commerical quantities, with various impurities. This term includes phosphatized limestones, sandstone, shales, and igneous rocks; nodular phosphates ; residual weathered phosphatic limestones ; vein phosphates ; and phosphatic sediments, both consolidated and unconsolidated.

The Chavara and Manavalakurichi placer deposits have been known since a long time for their rich reserves of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, monazite etc. While detailed work has been conducted on the mineralogy and texture of the bulk placer sediments, reports on the detailed investigations on individual minerals are relatively scanty. Though, limited work pertaining to the chemistry of ilmenite has been carried out by Nair et al (1995) and Ramakrishnan et al (1997), a comprehensive study of the weathering patterns of ilmenite along the longitudinal and vertical profiles has not been, so far, undertaken. Data on the microscopic analysis of ilmenite from the southwest placers, too, is sketchy. The present work deals with the variation of the weathering undergone by ilmenite in the southwest placer deposits based on chemical and mineralogical analyses.

Rail, port and shipping charges represent 30 to 50 per cent of landed costs for Australian coal mines selling to Asia. This proportion is higher for sales to Europe, yet it is in Europe where Australian producers are aiming for increased market share. The landed cost of coal to the international customer is the key parameter which determines market competitiveness. The objective of this study is to examine Australian export coal competitiveness in terms of transport distance. The approach used examines world coking coal and steaming coal production and the transport distances between major exporting regions and importing countries. Reference is made to the importance of land transport costs and a comparative approach for emphasising the relative magnitude of this factor is developed. Models developed are examined in terms of Australia's exports and a conclusion is reached that a reduction in rail freight costs would be an effective measure for improving the competitiveness of Australia's coal industry.

Coal has traditionally been an integral part of life in Kentucky. Coal mining produces a large part of revenue for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and provides a significant number of jobs to the residents of eastern (less in western) Kentucky. Recently, however, the coal industry of Kentucky has had to endure many hardships. The Clean Air Act set forth sulfur dioxide emission standards which have severely affected much of the coal mining industry in Kentucky, because much of the coal mined in Kentucky has a high sulfur content. In this paper, the background around the effects of Clean Air Act on the coal industry is introduced. The economic and social effects of the Clean Air Act on the Kentucky coal mining are addressed.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned & name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled except the deep holes drilled to test geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes are shown on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

Approximately 200 registered. Interest centered 1111 the technical papers which were keenly followed, with substantial discussion: During the entire week of the National Metal Congress (Oct. 3 to 'i), there were also other sessions of interest' to metallurgists, directed by the America11 Society for Steel Treating, American Welding Society, Production Division of the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Iron arid Steel and Machine Shop Practice Divisions of the American Society of Mechanical En,' the Wire Association and the American Drop Forging Institute. The National Metals Exposition at the 174th Regiment Armory was well attended.

"Recent improvements in the resolution of X-ray computed tomography (CT) make it a promising alternative to traditional time consuming, error prone laboratory procedures for mineral liberation analysis, such as heavy liquid fractioning and measurements on polished sections. All indications are that in a few years CT will be well-established in many laboratories as a rapid technique for accurate liberation studies. In this scenario it would be able to provide liberation spectra or washability data in tens of minutes following sampling. However, although CT is a fast evolving technology, its on-line application is unlikely in the foreseeable future.Dual-energy (DE) radiography is another X-ray technique originating from non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and medical fields, which allows retrieval of the volumetric content of valuable components from two-phase particles in a fraction of second. Two radiographic images at different X-ray energies of a single particle or a monolayer of particles are taken in short time sequence. The thickness of the two phases is calculated particle by particle by image subtraction, whereupon particle grades can be derived. The development of the method for on-line applications requires the presentation of non-overlapping particles in the gap in the X-ray source detector measurement couple. Straightforward extension of the principle to multiphase systems is not possible. The paper reviews the state of the art of these two techniques as applied to mineral liberation problems."

"IntroductionThis paper is the seventh of a series describing an investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on underground communication. A review of past work and results obtained has been published. The present paper deals with a study of line-radio or wired-wireless methods of communication, herein electrical energy is transmitted by metallic conductors.The use of line-radio over metallic conductors has been practiced for a number of years, and at present is being used on a large scale in long-distance carrier-current telephone and telegraph. The early work of the U. S. Army Signal Corps and the Bureau of Standards in using ordinary radio transmitting and receiving apparatus for communication over metallic conductors was been descried. Later publications describe commercial applications, and an excellent treatise and resume is given by E. Colpitts and C. B. Blackwell.Scope of ReportThis report contains (1) a discussion of the chief factors affecting carrier-current transmission, with particular reference in application to underground communication for mines; (2) a description of typical underground circuits used for power and lighting; and (3) description of apparatus used and results obtained in line-radio experiments in coal mines near Pittsburgh, with circuit diagrams, and conclusions as to power requirements and limitations for mine use."

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the Co and Mn resource of the West-Central Arkansas District, including field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation, and hydrometallurgical tests. The deposits occur within the Ouachita Mountains and are con-trolled structurally, occurring along the axes of anticlines making up the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of Mn oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilome-lane. Cobalt is concentrated within a particular Mn oxide phase, lithiophorite. Chemical analyses on head samples reported up to 25 pct Mn and 0.17 pct Co. Magnetic separation yielded products with up to 41 pct Mn and 0.22 pct Co at recoveries of 95 pct Mn and 93 pct Co.

Data regarding the composition and physical properties of Florida land-pebble phosphate-waste slime are presented, and the feasibility of dewatering and beneficiating the slime by several different methods is discussed. Chemical analyses, electron micrographs, and X-ray diffraction data showed that principal constituents of the slime included quartz, attapulgite, and flaorapatite. Viscosity of the slime changed with pH; thixotropic, Newtonian, and rheopectic states were observed as the pH increased. Use of various flocculating agents was not effective in improving thickening properties of the slime. Dewatering tests using pressure filtration showed that temperature influenced the filtration rate more than pressure; the filtration rate at 165° C was tenfold that at room temperature. Selective flotation of the slime, using two different processes, gave promising results. About 25 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a concentrate assaying 31 pct P205, Other tests demonstrated that the slime could be successfully fractionated at 20-microns using a hydrocyclone. In hydrometallurgical tests about 80 pct of the phosphorus and alumina were chemically extracted from the slime using sulfuric acid. Limited bacteriological studies made of the slime showed that several types of microorganisms were present and grew in the material despite the presence of fluorine-bearing minerals.

The blast furnace process is the most important process to produce pig iron. The necessary process energy is mainly covered by coke. But the production of coke is connected with CO2-emissions and high costs. A significant measure to reduce the coke rate and with it the CO2-emissions plus costs is pulverized coal injection (PCI) through the tuyeres into the blast furnace. A further increase to substitute coke by coal can be achieved by using the Oxycoal+ technology. This article compares and shows the cost effectiveness and the decrease of CO2-emissions with the help of simplified energy balances for the only coke operation of the blast furnace, the operation using pulverized coal injection and the operation using the Oxycoal+ technology.

Throughout the minerals industry, it is evident that a new wave of technological innovation is needed as the mining sector looks for ways to achieve higher security and safety as well as higher production rates with less investment. Innovation has always been one of the key factors in achieving success within the mining industry. However, its importance will be especially relevant in the coming years if negative trends in commodity prices and new challenges facing the industry (lower grades, deeper mines and economy of scales) are to be overcome and the future sustainability and profitability of the sector ensured.The drive towards fully autonomous operations has begun, with the implementation of automated systems in both surface and underground operations. However, these automated systems are currently planned and realised with well-defined automated tasks within structured environments and isolated spaces. Currently, there is no interaction between automated systems, manned systems or humans, which creates physically isolated environments.For fully autonomous and continuous operations, the automated systems need to operate in environments that enable flexible interactions between automated machines, tele- and manually operated machines and humans.In this paper, we address the automation paradigm considering the synergistic collaboration between humans and automated systems. In this paradigm, humans and machines would interact in a flexible, collaborative and synergistic way without the need for isolation. The implementation of this concept within mining operations will have to be underpinned by science and technological developments and will require adaptation from many fields, including robotics, automation, distributed systems, communication, human factors, pattern recognition and mine design.The paper also presents the research and development work being undertaken at the University of Chile’s Advanced Mining Technology Center, in collaboration with the Chilean mining industry.
