His father was a merchant navy Captain who served during WWII and during David’s early years his family lived in Dublin and Donegal where David went to the local elementary school. In 1954 he moved to London with his parents and attended Highgate School before commencing metallurgy at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London in 1960.

As part of a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates the thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to sulfur (S°). The research described herein is focused on the latter half of the process. It was demonstrated that calcium sulfide could be converted to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), and that ammonium bisulfide could be oxidized by air in the presence of a catalyst, to elemental sulfur, which was adsorbed on the catalyst. Two methods for recovering sulfur from the catalyst were developed: (1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur, and (2) leaching the sulfur from the catalyst with liquid anhydrous ammonia. Over 90 pct of the sulfur adsorbed on activated carbon (the catalyst) was recovered by both methods. Based upon the encouraging laboratory investigations, a hydrometallurgical scheme was proposed for the overall conversion of calcium sulfide to elemental sulfur.

Formability of extruded round AZ31 magnesium alloy tubes with different manganese concentrations was evaluated by performing bending tests and measuring strain along the length of the tubes during the bending process. It was found that an increase in the manganese content from 0.3 % to 0.7% did not exert any significant effect on the values of yield stress, elongation, or compression to fracture. However the hardness tended to increase and the UTS decreased. The compressive ductility was significantly lower than tensile ductility for all manganese concentrations. Consequently, the formability of tubes decreased, causing cracks in areas where compression strain occurred during bending. It was also found that a larger strain occurred in the latter half of the region along the length of tube between the clamp-end and the tube-positioning block. Within this region, alloy tubes with higher manganese concentrations, 0.5 and 0.7 %, there was a clear strain peak within the strain profile, while for the 0.3 % Mn alloy, a more uniform strain profile was exhibited, indicating a more uniform deformation. This was confirmed by microstructural analysis of the specimens.

Introduction The Darwin District is 30 miles east of Olancha which is 220 miles north from Los z4ngeles via U. S. Highway No. 6. The ore deposits occur in the Darwin hills that have been elevated above the Darwin plateau by typical basin and range-type faults. Some of these faults have been active quite recently as shown by the displacemerit of Quaternary (?) basalt flows and the rejuvenation of erosion in Darwin wash. The ore bodies occur as fissure fillings and replacement of favorable beddings in a thick series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites. Rich oxidized lead-silver ores were dis'Overed in the early seventies. BY 1875, Darwin had a population Of about 5000, and by 1880 several small mills and smelters had been built. Early exhaustion of surface ores, the isolated location of the district, and fluctuation Of metal prices caused intermittent operations until World War 11. The district production is estimated at about $3,000,000 prior to 1900 and perhaps $4,000,000 between 1900 and 1945 when Anaconda purchased the major producing mines. 'or the Past two Years, daily production has averaged 75 tons of direct shipping and 150 tons of milling-grade ore. At present, 300 tons of mixed oxide and sulphide ore are treated by flotation, the oxidized lead minerals being activated by addition of sodium sulphide after galena and sphalerite have been recovered from the circuit. Extraction averages 85 pct of the lead, 80 pct of the silver, and about 33 Pct Of the zinc in a bulk concentrate. The mill is designed so that minor changes permit selective flotation of pyritic lead-zinc ores encountered at depth. General Geology The oldest rocks in the Darwin hills are a series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites probably pennsyl-vanian in age. These rocks have been intruded on the Rest by the Coso granite batholith and on the east by a granodiorite stock. Numerous sills and dikes grading from orthoclase granite to gabbro are exposed in the underground workings. The sedimentary rocks have been considerably folded and faulted, the most prominent structure being a northwest pitching anticlinal fold, the crest of which lies just west of the ridge line of the Darwin hills, The east limb of this fold has been intruded by the granodiorite stock and east of the stock the sediments show several closely spaced anticlines and synclines. The minor flexures on the west flank of the major fold are structurally important in localizing the ore in the Defiance and Essex mines of the Darwin group. There are three principal systems of faulting and fissuring, most of which are post-intrusive and premineral in age, with minor amounts of postmineral movement. The Darwin tear fault is the largest, most persistent fault in the district. It strikes N 60 to 75°W, dips steeply south and is traceable for about 10 miles. It is a normal

The Lafitte field, the largest oil reserve in South Louisiana, is in Jefferson Parish, some 25 miles due south of the City of New Orleans. The discovery well, The Texas Company's No. I, Louisiana Land and Exploration Co., in the southeast corner of sec. 19, T. 17 S., R. 24 E., was completed on May 15, 1935. The initial production of this well was 960 bbl. of 34.9º A.P.I, gravity oil per day, through 1/4-in. choke, with a tubing pressure of 1600 lb. per sq. in. Producing depth was 9558 to 9572 ft., the total depth being 9572 feet. The development of the field has been at the rate of three to eight new producing wells per year. Up to Jan. I, 1944, 60 producing wells and three dry holes had been drilled, while two of the original producing wells had been abandoned, Although the field is not unitized, The Texas Company was the sole operator in the field until the Lafitte Oil Co. completed its NO. I Jefferson Parish, near the center of the west line of the NW/4 sec. 20, T. I7 S., R. 24 E., on July 27, 1941. No additional wells have been drilled by the Lafitte Oil Company. Drilling and WeLl-completion Practices All drilling operations have been conducted with the steam-driven rotary equipment mounted on submersible barges. A canal is dug to the well location and the drilling unit is floated into position. The seacocks are then opened and the barge settles to the bottom. After the well is completed, seacocks are closed and water is pumped out of the barge. This procedure permits the barge, with drilling equipment still in place, to be floated and moved off the location. The conventional open-hole and the gun-perforation method of completing wells has been used in this field. Where possible, the initial completion is from the deepest 'sand and recompletions are made progressively up the hole, by plugging back with cement to the upper sand and gun-perforating opposite the new sand. The oil string usually is 7 5/8 in., 26 to 34-lb. casing. Three wells have been completed using 9 5/8-in. 44-lb casing set below 10.000 feet. Fig. I shows the completion and recom-pletion practices on one well in the field. This figure also shows the relative locations of the different producing sands as shown on the electric well log. Structure The structure is an elongated dome, cut by two north-south faults, which divides the field into three segments. The west segment is the highest structurally and contains most of the recoverable oil and gas. The center segment is less important and the east segment is of little value. THE IMPORTANCE of infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectrometry in studies of the structure of coal and similar substances is described. Special experimental techniques have been developed for these studies. Thin sections of coal are preferred, but halide pellets are easier to prepare. Information obtained from infrared spectra on chemical functional groups has been discussed; the importance of both intensities and wavelengths of absorption bands has been emphasized. Functional groups assigned include aliphatic and aromatic CH, methylene and methyl groups, hydrogen-bonded hydroxyls, hydrogen-bonded and chelated carbonyls, phenolic structures, minerals, and aromatic structures that are benzenoid or polynuclear. Infrared studies of structures of coal extracts, distillates, and reaction products of various processes, both chemical and physical, are discussed. Coallike infrared spectra of chars of model compounds have been utilized extensively in studies of coal structure. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of coals show a lack of fine structure and low spectral intensities. These results have been applied to the questions of the chemical and physical structure of coal, particularly the question of polynuclear aromaticity of coals. The color of coal is also treated. The physical-chemical origin of the color of coal may be due to free radicals, as interesting correlations of ultraviolet-visible spectra with electron paramagnetic resonance have been obtained. The optical color of coal has been explained and simulation of the color changes observed in thin sections has been carried out, The spectra and structure of coal derivatives and other carbonaceous materials are also discussed. Possible sources of error in absorption spectral measurements are pointed out. Limited measurements of the ultraviolet-visible reflectance spectra of coal are described.

A fundamental study was conducted with the purpose of establishing an environmentally sound recovery process for recycling of valuable metals, by combining scraps containing such metals. As an example, direct extraction and recovery of neodymium (Nd) in magnet scraps was investigated by utilizing liquid metal as an extraction medium. It was found that liquid magnesium (Mg) is a suitable extraction medium and can extract Nd from iron alloys with high efficiency at around I 100 K. The newly developed extraction apparatus for Nd is a mechanically simple and static device without moving parts, where the Mg extraction medium circulates due to differences in the temperature inside the reaction vessel. This developed device can simultaneously accomplish continuous extraction of metal Nd from scraps, re-extraction of Mg from Mg-Nd alloy and the eventual recovery of pure Mg. As a result, metal Nd with 98 % purity was directly recovered from magnet scraps under certain conditions. It was also shown that the extraction agent Mg could be reused. The results of this investigation show the possibility of establishing a new process for the direct extraction of Nd in pure metal form without oxidization.

"The San Juan Basin, New Mexico contains many heavy mineral beach-placer sandstone deposits of Cretaceous age. Beach-placer sandstone deposits are concentrations of heavy minerals that formed by mechanical concentrations (i.e. settling) of heavy minerals on beaches or in longshore bars in a marginal-marine environment. They have high concentrations of several elements, such as Ti, Zr, rare earth elements (REE), Sc, Y, U, Th, Nb, Ta and Fe. These elements are becoming increasingly more important to industry, because they are used in the manufacture of devices our society uses every day, i.e. cell phones, computers, and alternative energy devices, like solar panels. It is unlikely that any of the beach-placer sandstone deposits in the San Juan Basin will be mined in the near future because of small tonnage, low grades, high iron content, and distance to processing plants and markets. However, as the demand for some of these elements increases because of increased demand and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics. Current studies at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources are focused on the Apache Mesa (formerly Stinking Lake) deposit near Dulce, New Mexico. INTRODUCTION Beach-placer sandstone deposits are accumulations of heavy, resistant minerals (i.e. high specific gravity) that form on upper regions of beaches or in long-shore bars in a marginal-marine environment. They form by mechanical concentration (i.e. settling) of heavy minerals by the action of waves, currents, and winds (Fig. 1; Bryan et al., 2007). Modern examples are found along the Atlantic Coast, USA (Koch, 1986; Carpenter and Carpenter, 1991), southeastern Australia (Roy, 1999), and Andhra Pradesh, India (Rao et al., 2008), where they are mined for titanium, zircon, and monazite (a Ce-bearing rare earth, REE, mineral). Detrital heavy minerals comprise approximately 50-60% of these sandstones and typically consist of titanite, zircon, magnetite, ilmenite, monazite, apatite, rutile, xenotime, garnet, and allanite, among other minerals. Most of these minerals have a high specific gravity exceeding 4 and are dark colored, giving the sandstones a dark color, resulting in them being called black sandstones. Although beach-placer sandstone deposits are found in strata of all ages; the deposits in the San Juan Basin in New Mexico are restricted to Late Cretaceous rocks belonging to the Gallup, Dalton, Point Lookout, and Pictured Cliffs Sandstones (Fig. 2; Table 1; Chenoweth, 1957; Houston and Murphy, 1970, 1977). The beach-placer sandstones are black, dark gray, to olive-brown, resistant to erosion, and radioactive due to radioactive zircon, monazite, apatite, and thorium minerals. Anomalously high concentrations of Ti, Fe, Nb, Th, U, Zr, Sc, Y, and REE are characteristic of these deposits. Similar Upper Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits are found throughout Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado (Dow and Batty, 1961; Houston and Murphy, 1970, 1977; Zech et al., 1994)."

Recent drilling programs have shown that the in-situ coal resources of Nova Scotia are very substantial. The grand totals of the measured, indicated and inferred categories amount to 232 m, 646m and 993 m tons, respectively. This vast quantity of coal occurs essentially in five main fields: Sydney, Mabou, Port Hood, Pictou and Springhill. The largest resources (84% of the total) occur in the submarine area of the Sydney coalfield. With a 65% recovery rate, there are at present 150m tons of proven, recoverable coal in Nova Scotia. At a predicted maximum annual production of 5 m tons, this amount equals a lifespan of 30 years. However, additional drilling, particularly in the Sydney offshore area, holds promise of increasing the recoverable reserve tonnage to at least 350 m tons. This figure may be compared with the 484 m tons production obtained during 191 years of mining (from 1785-1976). The geological appraisal of the remaining coal resources in the five fields mentioned is presented in three-dimensional diagrams, per individual seam and corresponding reserve area. In addition, the submarine extensions of the Sydney and Mabou coalfields are discussed in light of results obtained from off shore oil exploration wells. The terminology and standards of coal resource calculations are pointed out, and the phenomenon of seam splitting and its prediction from geological data is illustrated. The availability in Nova Scotia of either thermal or metallurgical coal is considered in relation to rank and sulphur content. This paper was presented in June 1977 at the 90th Annual Meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia. The coal resource estimates, however, have been updated to include the results obtained with the offshore drilling in the Sydney Coalfield to November 1977.

A mineral pigment is a colored substance dug from the ground, which after treatment can be mixed with a drying oil to form a paint. Not all colored earths, however, can be made into satisfactory pigment. Much depends upon the attractiveness and uniformity of the color and the ease of purification. Mineral pigments are distinguished from chemical pigments by a difference in origin and treatment. Chemical pigments are not found ready-made in the earth but must be synthesized or otherwise obtained from other compounds or elements; for example, cadmium yellow, a chemical pigment, is precipitated from a solution of cadmium chloride, hydrochloric acid, and sodium sulfide.

At the Sinclair Study Site it was found that the deeper the soil the greater the yield of corn, soybeans, wheat, alfalfa, and timothy. Yields at this location were generally lower than those at the Alston Surface Mine. At Alston the non-prime land treatments generally produced greater yields for all crops than did the prime farmland treatments, however, the intermediate soil thickness, 20 cm topsoil over 40 cm of subsoil, gave the best yields, provided it's subsoil had been limed. From a chemical point of view, acidic spoils do not need to be buried by 120 cm or 4 feet of soil, provided adequate lime is applied to these spoils as a barrier prior to placement of good quality topsoil and only forage crops are to be grown. The burial depth must be increased to as much as 75 cm when grain crops such as corn or soybeans are to be grown. This response to burial depth appears to be related to water storage needed by the crop and not due to toxic effects of the spoils. A conventional farm tractor-mounted subsoiler increased yields of soybeans and corn the first one or two years, but the effect was diminished with time. Subsoiling did not produce significant increases for alfalfa or wheat. However, ripping with a bulldozer produced significant yield responses, especially for corn and soybeans, that have lasted for at least three years. The ripping effectively reduced the bulk density at least within the zones through which the ripper had passed. Liming the upper 20 cm of subsoil significantly increased yields of alfalfa, corn, and soybeans. There also appeared to be an interaction between this lime treatment and soil depth. Yields of some grain and forage crops may be high enough to meet target levels for bond release for prime farmland. Based on the present study, one should not expect corn yields to be high enough to meet bond release. This statement should not be considered final since the experiment is not complete.

Local communities are undertaking an increased role in mine project decision making processes, associated with growing pressure and expectations from regulators, financiers and the general public. This is particularly evident in international projects within developing economies. Environmental and social issues are often complex. Solutions demand difficult choices and trade-offs between sustainable development dimensions: economic growth, social equity and environmental integrity. Proactive stakeholder engagement can play a critical role in assisting decision-makers in determining the operational reality of sustainable development by jointly exploring project trade-offs between proponents and affected stakeholders. Good stakeholder engagement has other potential benefits, ranging from reduced financial risk due to regulator delays, legal disputes or negative publicity to increasing market share through good public image. Approaches to consultation and disclosure have changed from short-term regulatory based focuses, to longer-term, strategic tools for relationship building, proactive risk management and new business identification. Approaches to consultation form a significant opportunity to contribute to overall social sustainability. This paper discusses, based on authorsÆ experience, the broader concept of stakeholder engagement and its contribution to social sustainability of the mining industry. The focus is on key considerations for an effective stakeholder engagement. Three case studies outline how broad based, proactive stakeholder engagement can contribute to improved operation and overall sustainability. The case studies include: a greenfields project in Ghana; a long-term mine in Australia; and an open-pit mine in Vietnam.

The analysis of water produced with crude petroleum has interested oil producers since inception of the industry. Records of the first analysis of mineralized water produced from an oil-productive formation are obscure, and references to the first use of brine analyses to assist in solving problems of petroleum production are not available in the technical literature. However, many early reports of the Federal Bureau of Mines5-8 and Federal Geological Survey,9-11/ as well as articles in engineer and geological journals12-14/ placed special emphasis on the importance, interpretation, and application of water analyses. One of the earliest applications of water analyses, and still a major one today, is for identification of intrusive waters in oil wells. This may be done by comparing the chemical constituents of a sample of water indigenous to the oil-productive formation with those of samples from upper, water-bearing formations within the same general area. Some earlier investigators recognized the need for Analyzing samples of all waters encountered in drilling operations. Ambrose15/ stated, in part, "In wells being drilled, the engineer should grasp every opportunity to get a true sample of water from each sand. . .," and, "The waters of each oil field are chemically different from those of another field." The validity of the latter observation and the importance of the former one have been borne out by comparing the results of analyses of many samples and noting the differences in relative concentrations of like constituents of waters from the a geological formation in different localities or oil pools.

"INTRODUCTION The Butte district of Montana is well-known as one of the biggest historic producers of copper in the world. It is also a classic example of a porphyry Cu-Mo system that has been overprinted by zoned, polymetallic (Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag) lode mineralization. After copper, silver was the next most important metal mined from Butte, with over 700 million ounces of total Ag production between 1880 and the present day. Although many papers have been written on the mineralogy of the early porphyry Cu-Mo mineralization and the high-grade Cu-rich lodes in the center of the district, relatively little information exists on the mineralogy of silver in Butte. The purpose of this paper is to summarize past and present silver production trends for the district, and to combine previously published work with new research to examine the mineralogy of silver in the Butte mining district. BUTTE HISTORIC SILVER PRODUCTION According to a recent USGS compilation1, Butte is one of the most Ag-rich porphyry deposits in the world, both in terms of average Ag grade (8.6 g/ton) and total production + reserves (Fig. 1). It is also the 2nd biggest Ag-producing mining district in the U.S. (after the Couer d’Alene district, Idaho). Annual silver and copper production data for the Butte district, compiled from various sources2,3,4, are summarized in Figure 2. Peak production of Ag and Cu was in 1917. While Ag production gradually declined in the ensuing decades, Cu production remained strong until the years leading up to the closure of the Berkeley Pit in 1982. In 1984, mining of the nearby Continental Pit resumed under a different operator, and continues to the present day. The Continental mine produced an average of 35,000 metric tons Cu and 575,000 oz Ag per year between 1984 and 20044. These figures do not take into account a period of mine closure in 2001-2003 due to an unexpected hike in utility prices. The long-term decline in Ag/Cu ratio of ore mined in Butte (Figure 3) is due to several factors, including: 1) changes in metal prices; 2) a downwards decrease in Ag/Cu ratio of most of the lodes with depth below surface; and 3) a shift in mining methods from selective underground mining of high-grade veins to open-pit mining of the bulk rock."

The mining industry, both here and internationally, is continually developing increasingly sophisticated software to compute mineral resource estimates, but these processes cannot compensate for a flawed geological interpretation of the geology of the economic commodity(s) concentrations. Quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) is becoming increasingly common in association with the sampling and assaying practices within the industry. However, it is rare in the case of a geological interpretation associated with mineral resource estimation. Why? In the context of this paper, QA/QC relates to the use of statistical and graphical tools to show that the geological economic commodity concentrations have been appropriately domained. Domaining is essential to improve the chance of getting a mineral resource estimate right. Commodity value and acceptable concentration variation within a mineral resource can be ingredients that make mineral resource estimation difficult to get right. But it is possible to get it right a very high proportion of the time. It is more likely to occur when inappropriate data consolidation is minimised. In any case, inappropriate data consolidation is significantly reduced when the geological interpretation is strongly consistent with the data and it is demonstrable. To achieve quality global estimates of geological domain concentrations, it is essential that the geology of the prospect is understood sufficiently that the deposit is appropriately domained. Appropriate domaining occurs when sample populations are separated in such a way that only data in harmony with each other within the population contributes to the domain's concentration estimate. The paper will use four brief case studies to illustrate how QA/QC can be used to display data and validate the underpinning geological interpretation through its associated domaining to get it right when it comes to a mineral resource estimation.

The results of designing, constructing, installing and operating a ventilation monitoring system throughout an entire commercial coal mine is presented. Measured parameters were airflow, methane, carbon monoxide, temperature, relative humidity and differential pressure. A central computer provided for automatic system operation. Preliminary tests of two remotely controlled ventilation regulators were performed in conjunction with the monitoring system.

Cable sheaths made from common lead have been used to protect underground cables since the beginning of the power-cable industry. Only within the last few years, however, has a systematic study of the production methods and of the causes of failures in cable sheathing been undertaken. Recent increases in the use and demands for service made upon power cables have emphasized the importance of high-quality cable sheaths. It was customary for the users to attribute the cause for their sheath failures to the lack of purity of the lead, but this contention has not been borne out by field and laboratory inspection of the sheaths. During the past two years the writers have had an opportunity to examine various types of sheaths that were removed from power cables after failure. These samples were obtained from various parts of the country and represent, it is supposed, the production of the principal cable manufacturers. Aside from corrosion, the common field difficulties can be classified either as mechanical or structural, as outlined below, and when structural irregularities are found they can all be attributed to manufacturing causes and in no way reflect the purity of the lead. This paper presents a brief picture of the quality of coal produced in Eastern Canada for use in thermal generating stations. It describes, in particular, the characteristics of coals burned in six power plants -two in New Brunswick and four in Nova Scotia. Each station is dis-cussed in turn, and comments are made on the coals used therein with regards to origin and physical and chemical properties affecting station operation. A table of coal data shows, at a glance, the wide variation in the quality of coals received by these stations from producers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. "The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy." T HIS is the opening statement in a paper which was presented by Mr. D. A. Pirttinen at the Coal Division's Toronto meeting in April, 1960. In bringing the power engineer's viewpoint to the coal producers' attention, Mr. Pirttinen made a survey of utility steam plants operating in Canada, and the results of this survey formed the basis for his paper, which he titled: "Generating Station Coal Quality.

Recovery of gold from refractory ores was studied by pressure oxidation as the method of ore pretreatment followed by bromination of oxidized residues. Three different ores were examined, Au-Ag, Au-Ag-Te, and Au-silver free ore. Pyrite was the major host mineral for gold in these ores. The effect of pressure oxidation parameters (temperature, pressure of oxygen, time, and pulp density) on subsequent bromination under standard conditions was examined. Bromination of residues produced under standard pressure oxidation conditions was examined as a function of: temperature, bromine and sodium bromide concentration, and time. Recovery of gold on activated carbon, from the pulp after bromination, was studied too. Recovery of gold from silver containing ores was lower (87-91%) than the recovery of gold from silver free gold ore (97%). In each studied case, the presence of activated carbon in the pulp further increased the recovery of gold.
