About a century ago Bunsen and his associates invented the famous burner that bears his name and was to become the ancestor of today's gas appliances. Over the years, Bunsen's invention became the starting point of a highly developed, practical technology that culminated in the gas industry as we now know it. However, it did not occur to the early workers to investigate the scientific potentialities of the new device, and as a result the science of gas-burner performance did not keep pace with the growing industry. It was with the objective of closing the rapidly widening gap between science and technology that the present research was undertaken Its immediate purpose was to provide basic information on the combustion characteristics of .fuel gases, in particular as they affect flashback, blowoff, and yellow tipping. Information obtained in the present research and contained within this report consists of the following: (1) Fundamental flashback and blowoff characteristics have been determined, it is believed, for all fuel-gas mixtures in which the gas industry may be interested. These are critical boundary velocity gradients for flames in free air, on burners with ports at room temperature and pressure. Burner aeration is characterized by the parameter, fraction of stoichiometric. These basic limits are explained, values are presented, and calculation procedure is given for deriving corresponding values of port loading and percent primary air (chs. I and II).

CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal- oil-mixture (COM) business for over five (5) years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August of 1979. For over two (2) years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit. CoaLiquid has conducted commercial scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.

It is becoming evident that traditional methods of econometric analysis are inadequate in estimating-the long-run supply of minerals. Econometrics is limited to extracting estimates from observations of the theory predicts that the least cost deposits will be exploited first.1 The estimation of parameters from past data then must lead to biased projections of the future. Mining conditions in the future will be worse than in the past and it is the impact of the future conditions on cost that we need to know. In this paper we present a methodology for dealing with this problem. We estimate a "cumulative cost" function that yields the long-run marginal cost of mining as a function of cumulative output produced over time.2 This is relatively easy to do for coal mining in the United States where exploration for new deposits is not a major factor in supply. The first step of the procedure relates cost to the rate of output and to the geological conditions of the mine. The second step combines geological information on remaining deposits with the cost function to yield the cumulative cost function. A central theme of both these steps is the interaction of economics with geology. The best deposits are selected first and in each step of the estimation allowance must be made for this fact. The problem of depletion is part of the general problem of structural change. The change through depletion in the nature of the exploitable mineral stock is only one factor that calls for an analysis sensitive to the changing circumstances of the industry. "The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health completed a 15-month study at an underground limestone mine crusher booth that evaluated three research parameters: (1) the effectiveness of a filtration and pressurization system for improving the air quality inside the operator booth, (2) the relative effectiveness of ? > 99 and ? > 95 experimental prototype filters in the system, and (3) the performance of three different cab pressure monitoring devices. The protection factor was quantified monthly using particle counters in the respirable dust range of 0.3 to 1 µm particle size, and gravimetric dust samples were gathered at the beginning and end of the overall study. Under static (closed-door) conditions, the filtration unit offered a gravimetric calculated protection factor between 10 and 31, depending on the filter type and loading condition. The monthly particle counting analysis shows that the ? > 95 filter offers a protection factor nearly five times that of the ? > 99 filter, where n = 15 samples. The booth pressure monitors were tested and proved to be a valid indicator of system performance over time. IntroductionDesigned and installed correctly, enclosed cabs, operator booths and control rooms offer mine workers protection from noise and physical hazards, such as flying rock and debris, as well as a more comfortable environment in regards to temperature and humidity (Organiscak et al., 2016). While it is easy to quantify the operation of a cab’s air-conditioning unit by measuring the temperature, or observe whether the cab offers protection from flying debris, it is somewhat more difficult to quantify its performance in reducing respirable dust hazards.The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting applied research to improve the air quality inside the enclosed cabs of mobile equipment, resulting in the mathematical modeling of enclosed cab filtration systems (Organiscak and Cecala, 2008). The same principles that govern the performance of filtration systems on mobile equipment are applicable to stationary enclosures such as operator booths and control rooms (Noll, Cecala and Hummer, 2015). While stationary enclosures are similar to mobile cabs, the work area can be significantly larger. Workers in booths and control rooms also tend to stay within the enclosure for a greater percentage of the day as opposed to workers on mobile equipment who enter and exit frequently."

It is not unlikely in fact it is probable, that these huge stores of petroleum may ultimately be proven to exist within the present boundaries of the U.S.S.R. The size of the country is almost beyond imagination it is 2.7 times as big as the United States. Great sedimentary basins exist in all its different geological provinces, much of which are entirely untested and barely prospected. Oil in commercial quantities is actually produced from formations in every period from the Devonian to the Pleistocene. In the Emba region alone, 300 salt domes are known with an estimate of 700 still to be found. Only 22 of the 300 have been drilled and all showed oil. Of the 22 domes drilled six are now producing. This report covers the calendar year 1953 and has been prepared and submitted in accordance with the provisions of Sec. 106(a) and Sec. 212(c) of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (66 Stat. 692; 30 U.S.C. Secs. 451-483). During this first full calendar year of operations under the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, the coal-mining industry of the United States attained the best injury records in its history - improving the former best records (made in 1952) by 91 fatal and 10,020 nonfatal injuries. Whereas, the mandatory provisions of the act were intended and designed to prevent major mine disasters, apparently the effects have reached beyond the scope thereof in reducing mine accidents generally.

Technical & Procurement Services Limited (TECHPRO) in Ashford, Kent, UK, have been appointed as Project Managers for the major rehabilitation of the Copper Smelting complex of Nkana Division, Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited, (ZCCM) Zambia. In outline, the overall scope covers three main areas: a) Transfer and implementation of new technology into Zambia for the production of primary copper. b) Replacement of gas collection and gas treatment circuits to guarantee high quality feed to the acid plants. c) Completion of a number of minor projects in the copper smelter and associated utility plants to complement changes in the primary smelting technique. This paper describes the Project Management methodology and style used by TECHPRO to tackle typical problems that arise in retrofit projects of this type. Reference is made specific aspects of the smelter projects to illustrate solutions to the problems. The subjects. addressed highlight the complexities not only of having a -Client 5,000 miles from the Project Office, but also the difficulty of co-ordinating and controlling the performance of min sub-contractors who are also geographically distant.

On Thursday, March 18, 1937, the country was shocked by news of a terrific explosion at the New London, Tex., school, which caused the death of 280 pupils rind 14 teachers. The explosion occurred at about 3:05 p.m. in the largest of the 11 school buildings on the campus. Figure 1 shows this building, market; "Main high school building?, with respect to other buildings, pipe lines, oil wells, and gas lines on the property.

Oxygen breathing apparatus for use in mines was introduced to the United States in 1907. Despite their intended purpose of safeguarding lives, the apparatus led to the deaths of many men because of inherent or developed defects in the equipment, lack of training,, physical shortcomings of wearers, and improper procedures. The Bureau of Mines pioneered in research and training to curb logs of life among users of such apparatus and promoted development of safer equipment and procedures. As a consequence, deaths have been far less frequent. In 1944 the Bureau issued Information Circular 7279, Loss of Life Among Wearers of Oxygen Breathing Apparatus. That publication listed the case histories of 26 deaths that had occurred since the introduction of such equipment to American mining. The author, the late G. W. Grove,3/ asserted that further loss of life could be avoided if good equipment were used, teams were properly trained, and the basic principles of safe procedure were followed. This publication is a sequel to I.C. 7279 and contains information on eight deaths among wearers of oxygen breathing apparatus that were overlooked in the original compilation. It also describes the single death that occurred since I.C. 7279 was published.

According to reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines , Department of Commerce , as of January 1 , 1930 , there were 412 completed refineries in the United States with a daily crude oil capacity of 3,755,585 barrels . This compares with 413 refineries of 3,509,540 barrels capacity on January 1 , 1929 , which indicates that whereas the number of refineries was practically unchanged , the total capacity increased 8 per cent during the past year . Of the completed plants as of January 1 , 1930 , 358 plants , of 3,634,825 barrels total capacity , were operating and 54 , with a capacity of 130,760 barrels , were shut down . Compared with a year ago , this indicates a decline in the percentage of the total refinery capacity that is inoperative . There has been a decided decrease in the number of shut-down plants since 1924 and 1925 , when one plant in every three was inoperative . Many of the inoperative plants of 1924 and 1925 were constructed soon after the boom times of 1920. Some of these were operated for a time but were unable to show a profit during 1923 and 1924 , when an overproduction of crude petroleum was accompanied by demoralized markets for refined products . Prices for refined products improved in 1925 and 1926 , but only a comparatively few of the shut -down plants , then partly obsolete , were able to obtain or renew their crude connections and compete successfully with the larger , more firmly established refineries . After five years or more of continuous idleness , a refinery would be rendered practically useless through corrosion and obsolescence . Consequently , most plants now being carried as " shut -down " have operated intermittently since 1923 . struction . A material change occurred in 1929 in the matter of plants under con- On January 1 , 1929 , there were 14 plants under construction , with a potential capacity of 99,000 barrels per day , whereas on January 1 , 1930 , there were only eight plants of 37,200 barrels capacity being built . This decline was due to the fact that the construction program in west Texas , which was at or near its height on January 1 , 1929 , was completed prior to January 1 , 1930 .

"Thirteen Canadian sulphide ore mines were surveyed for corrosion control. The mines visited were a small, yet representative, proportion of this segment of the Canadian mining and metallurgical industry. Information on metallic corrosion and methods used to control it in underground workings and mills was gathered (a) by discussing corrosion problems with company personnel, (b) by examining equipment and structures during under-ground and mill tours, (c) by photographing corrosion sites, and (d) by collecting and analyzing mine water samples.The corrosion survey, which is summarized in the re-port, leads to the following general conclusions. Mine environments are corrosive, particularly when the mine w1a-ter is acidic. Because of a lack of good corrosion control measures, excessive deterioration of equipment due to corrosion occurs in mines. Mill environments are also corrosive, but in some cases good preventive measures are being taken to effectively control corrosion losses.Ways to reduce corrosion losses in sulphide ore mines and mills are discussed. The main areas for more corrosion research and development are selection of materials of construction, protective coatings, cathodic protection, inhibitors, equipment design, and mining and milling practices."

More and more mining companies are becoming aware of the potential benefits of sensor-based ore sorting and process optimisation. This is reflected by a growing number of analysers that are available for drill hole logging, conveyor belt scanning, ore sorting, slurry analysis, etc. These tools all rely on a specific sensor technology that can be used to detect a material property such as colour, density, mineralogy, or chemical elements. However, all sensors have restrictions on the minerals and/or elements that can be detected or inferred. This is caused by the physical mechanisms behind the technology and depends on mineral concentration and compositional heterogeneity of the ore. Since nearly every ore deposit is unique in composition and characterised by different geological features that drive heterogeneity, no one-size-fits-all sensor solution is available. This makes it difficult for mining professionals to find suitable sensing technologies that can help them solve problems and improve processes for their specific ore types.

Silica, the world's most abundant mineral compound, is composed of the two commonest elements - oxygen and silicon. In addition to being the life-giving constituent of the atmosphere and the major element in the waters of the earth, oxygen comprises almost half of all known terrestrial matter and occurs combined with most of the other ninety-odd elements in the solid crust of the earth; however, a large proportion of the oxygen is combined with silicon. Silicon is second only to oxygen in abundance in nature and constitutes more than one-fourth of all known terrestrial matter. The town of Hedley is some 200 miles due east of Vancouver and lies in the bottom of the Similkameen River valley, at the junction of Twenty Mile creek, at about the 1,700-foot elevation above sea level. The Nickel Plate mine camp is on Nickel Plate mountain at an elevation of about 5,600 feet, four miles slightly east of north from Hedley, to which it is connected by 9 miles of road, and by 10,000 feet of tramway and electric railway. The latter is used both to transport the ore to the 275-ton mill at Hedley and to furnish the mine with supplies. History The Nickel Plate claim was staked in 1898 to cover the sole outcrop of the Nickel Plate system of orebodies. Soon afterwards it was optioned by the Marcus Daly interests of Butte and underground exploration commenced. Early exploration was successful, and a power plant, tramway, and mill were constructed. The mill began operations in 1904. Production under Daly control ensued from June, 1904, to August, 1909, and amounted to 167,000 tons. The Hedley Gold Mining Company was organized and commenced operations in 1909. The capacity of the mill was increased by stages to 200 tons and a steady production, except for short periods in winter, was maintained until 1930. By 1930, gold to the value of nearly $10,000,000 had been produced since the discovery in 1898. The South American Development Company optioned the property in 1932. Active exploration was conducted during 1933 and 1934 by the Kelowna Exploration Company, a subsidiary of the South American Development Company. This work was sufficiently successful that, coupled with the increase in the price of gold from $20.67 to $35.00 per ounce, production re-commenced in December, 1934, and continued uninterrupted until July, i946, when, along with all B.C. gold mines, a strike closed operations. Under the present ownership, the mill capacity was increased to 275 tons.

In 2015, 40 longwall mines provided nearly 60 percent of U.S. underground coal production. During this time, about 80 percent of ground-fall-related fatalities occurred in areas where the mine roof was supported. In an attempt to better understand the status quo of current longwall support practices in the United States, during a period between 2010 and 2017, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) visited a sample of 25 longwall mines representing nearly 50 percent of the currently active longwall mines operating in all of the major U.S. longwall producing regions. The data presented here indicate that the types and amount of roof support being installed in modern U.S. longwall mines have reduced ground-fall accident and injury rates to levels never seen before. However, the complete elimination of unintended roof falls in U.S. longwall mines has remained elusive. The data in this paper can be used by mine operators and engineers to determine where their chosen type and density of roof support occur on the spectrum of observations contained in this database. Additionally, this data can be used to enhance, supplement and support additional research on longwall gateroad support systems.

Grade control is a process of maximising value and reducing risk, through the delivery of quality tonnes to the mill via the accurate definition of ore and waste. It essentially comprises data collection, integration and interpretation; local resource estimation; stope design; supervision of mining and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of geological understanding led by high-quality mapping and sampling to drive appropriate estimation strategies and mining. Gold veins show various complex features relating to erratic grade distribution (nugget effect), variable geometry and internal architecture. These include variations in dip, strike and width, late-stage faulting/shearing effects and geometallurgy. Such variations generally require close geological understanding to ensure optimum grade, minimal dilution and maximum mining recovery. A well designed grade control program will prove to management and stakeholders that by applying geological knowledge, the mining process can be more efficient and cost effective. This paper reviews the issues of grade control in underground gold mines and focuses on integrated mapping and sampling through three case studies.

ANTICIPATING the eventual use of the huge tonnages of nonmagnetic taconites of the Mesabi range of the United States, the Federal Bureau of Mines is classifying and evaluating these deposits in detail. This introductory report describes work begun in 1954 as part of a long-range program to sample, classify, and evaluate important occurrences of nonmagnetic taconite on the Mesabi, range. Included in this report are brief discussions of the geology, history, and potential of the Mesabi range district and mining industry, together with a more detailed presentation of the sampling and metallurgical evaluation of these nonmagnetic taconite deposits. A total of 898 field samples was collected. Most of these were taken in the region between Grand Rapids and Chisholm, Minn., but a few came from the area between Chisholm and Buhl, Minn. Of the total samples, 865 were from open pit bank faces where the greater vertical distances presented by the cherty members facilitated the taking of a large number of samples. Conversely, the narrow face presented by the slaty members confined and limited the areas from which samples were taken. In addition, 33 of the field samples were taken from rock dumps in order to determine, in a preliminary way, the characteristics of these materials.

IN PREVIOUS papers,1 the author has reported the results of experiments on the straining in tension of a single crystal test piece, about 0.6 in. long, of vacuum-melted electrolytic iron containing 1.8 per cent. of silicon. The crystal was originally in the "as cast" condition, and was stressed slowly along a tetragonal axis so that slipping along conjugate gliding planes finally transformed the original cylindrical portion into a pair of fracture wedges. One of these fracture wedges was sectioned along the stress axis in a plane at right angles to the edge of the wedge. A metallographic study of this plane of -section led to the conclusion that slip had taken place in the (111) direction along (112) planes making a V shape with the stress axis. The present paper describes the results of scratch-hardness tests conducted on the same section, in order to determine the distribution of strain hardness therein, followed by annealing, and considers the resulting variations in hardness. These observations supplement those made by Krivobok2 on similar material reduced 25 per cent. by hammering (i. e., by impact) in the cold. In order to investigate ageing effects, two small crystals of the same alloy were also tested.

In 1846 a bill was pending in Congress to reduce, or eliminate, the tariff on coal; the debate caused the same writer to visit the mines on the north side of the James River and to write a letter about them to the same paper.' Omitting the political arguments, his account follows: "July 13, 1846. "Early in the morning we rose, washed, combed, and ate a first-rate breakfast, and then went to the Tuckahoe, mined by Messrs. Sneed and Dietrock. Coal was first discovered here sixty years ago, and mined by Colonel Thomas Randolph, the proprietor of the land. They were worked by him for his smith-shops. Since which time they have been worked periodically, up to the war of 1812, when they were abandoned; and recommenced in 1837 under the management of Dr. W. T.- Scott. Subsequently a Company was formed called Tuckahoe Coal Mining Company, which purchased the whole track at a cost of $30,000. They commenced the sinking of a shaft and went as far as 412 feet, and then pitched the fat all into the fire by hauling off altogether in despair. In 1843 Major Sneed went to work at it, and succeeded. I may here remark that Major Sneed has been the pioneer in this business on the North side of the River, and has sunk more shafts than any other man who has pursued this vocation in Eastern Virginia. The difficulties and expense in sinking these shafts are sometimes immense. The coal on the outcrop or surface is not always a guide to where it may be found imbedded many hundred feet under earth and rock. "The Tuckahoe Pits are on the Eastern end of the coal field, within twelve hundred yards of the Canal, and about twelve miles from Richmond. They employ fifty hands and raise some three hundred thousand bushels of coal per year. It is highly bituminous and excellent for the manufacture of iron. The Tredegar and Belle Isle Rolling Mills are supplied with it. It must be good and of the right kind', or they would not use it. These pits are the only. ones on this side troubled-with gas-of course ventillation is necessary. There is not as much water in this Pit as I have found generally in many others, although they have extended their operations to a considerable distance under ground. I have observed in examining the coal mines, that, where they are sunk over four or five hundred feet, they are annoyed by gas, and where there is a less depth they are troubled with water. It is evident, therefore, that water, in the region of these coal fields, does not run through the earth to any extent, even five hundred feet deep, and the farther you go below that the greater the increase of gas. "We next visited William Cottrell's Pits, situated one mile and a half north of this. He employs some thirty hands, and raises from 4 to 500 bushels per day. "T. & R. Crouch's Pits are one hundred yards north of Cottrell's. This firm employ from 80 to 90 hands, and raise from 8 to 900 bushels per day. They are now
