THE Tri-State district, named from its situation in three States, lies in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the adjacent part of Missouri east of the common corner of the above States. Production in the past eighty years has come from scattered mines within an area of some 35 miles east and west, by 25 miles north and south, although the actual area of the mined ground is but a small fraction of this territory. The land is leased from the individual land-owners, and the size of the tracts varies from 4.0 to 200 acres, the smaller sized tracts predominating. The leases usually call for a royalty of 7% to 15 per cent of the gross receipts of the concentrates, continuous operation during the life of the lease and specifically set out that no ores can be brought in from a foreign lease for custom milling nor can any ore be removed from the lease for milling. The ownership of the tailings remains with the land-owner.

Since the late Dr. Keith Brimacombe, et al, performed tests at the now-closed Asarco Tacoma smelter and the Inco Copper Cliff Smelter on Peirce-Smith copper converters almost thirty years ago, many Pyro-metallurgists have investigated using the technology. To the best of the authors knowledge, except for shrouded tuyere technologies using substantial oxygen enrichments, the core idea of using high pressure air injection has not been implemented anywhere in the world. This paper reviews the fundamentals of this technology and summarizes the basic economic considerations. It also presents the circumstances of where and when high-pressure injection might be justified.

Summary During the last three years the discovery of gold in the belt of volcanic and sedimentary rocks extending eastward from the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake gold-fields has caused a great deal of excitement in mining circles. The area is heavily drift covered, and every aid to the location of veins is eagerly grasped. A knowledge of the physiographic history of the area is of the utmost importance in the application of many of these aids. Evidence is presented to show that glacial erosion has lowered the general elevation very little below the pre-glacial level, and that many glacial erratics have been carried less than three miles southward. Probably a knowledge of the general geology of a: region was never more necessary to the understanding of the distribution and continuation in depth of the mineral veins than in this area. Four distinct granites occur in the region, and gold-bearing veins are genetically associated with only one of these. Two types of quartz-feldspar porphyries have been found, only one of which has any bearing on the locus of the mineral veins. Many other examples of this complexity of associations might be cited, but everyone goes to show that in most cases the economic importance of the deposits can be realized only after the regional geology is understood. A series of sandstone, limestone and shale intruded by granite lies unconformably below the Keewatin lavas. The latter are intruded by a gneissoid granite and are overlain unconformably by the thick series of Timiskaming greywackes and silts. These are intruded by carbonated syenites and syenite porphyries which have since been rendered somewhat schistose.

The Salmita Gold Mine is located 240 air kilometres northea t of Yellowknife on the east shore of Matthews Lake. Salmita is one of several gold showings which are regionally associated with the steep easterly dipping contact zone between mafic, intermediate and fe lsic volcanics to the west and overlying finely laminated argillaceous sediments to the east. The volcanic assemblage forms a narrow 2 m to 7 m wide north to northwesterly trend ing Belt of Yellowknife Supergroup Archaen greenstone rocks. The contact zone exhibits exhalite character and the increased sulphide content provides a di stinct VLF-EM , IP/Resisti vi ty and/or magnetic signature. Gold occurs at or near this contact in three main settings: associated with si liceous vein-like structures; with finely disseminated sulphides within ericitic altered upper fe lsic tuffaceous unit ; or with quartz in narrow shear zones within the overlying sediment . The B-Vein is of the former type with free mi ll ing gold occurring within a highly sil iceous zone having an average widtn of 1.69 m. Alteration is intense within the immediately su rrounding host lithologies and includes the development of si lica, carbonate, sulphide, sericite and chlorite with minor graphite, epidote. tourmaline and scheelite. The mineable zone above the 4th level (-200 m) ha an average strike of 160 m and is divided into three south plunging ore shoots separated by the regional Salmita Shear Zone in the south and by a low-grade structural hiatus in the north. Production from the B-Vein commenced in August 1983 based on a diluted in situ ore reserve of 140,000 t grading 26.6 git Au . As of December 31, 1985, a total of 131 ,537 t grading 27.8 git Au have been mined at a ra.te of 160 t per day and a 96.4 percent recovery, to produce 3,522 ,000 g (113,227 ounces) of gold . Current (January I, 1986) reserves total 45,500 t grading 37 g/t Au down to the 10th level (-500 m) .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines operated a 2,000-g (4.4-lb) batch process development unit for recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from automobile catalysts. Virgin monolith, used pellet, and used monolith catalyst samples were tested. Leaching twice with 1-pct sodium cyanide (NaCN) solution at 1600 C for 1 h dissolved more than 95 pct of the PGM from virgin catalysts and more than 90 pct from used pellet catalysts. More than 85 pct of the PGM was dissolved from used monolith catalysts when a third autoclave step was added. Solid PGM concentrates containing more than 99.8 pct of the dissolved PGM and analyzing greater than 70 pct PGM were recovered by heating the pregnant leach solutions from virgin catalysts to 2500 C and used catalyst to 2750 C for 1 h. The solution after heating contained less than 0.2 ppm. total cyanide. The virgin residues passed the EPA Extraction Procedure Toxicity Test (EP Tox Test), the EPA Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP), and the California Waste Extraction Test (WET) for all elements except Ba. Adding sodium sulfate (Na2S04) to the virgin leach residues reduced the amount of Ba dissolved to an acceptable level. The used leach residues passed the EP Tox Test for all elements but failed the WET and TCLP for Pb.

Any mining engineer with a desire to operate independently, with some financial backing, and with no fear of heavy responsibility and long hours, should be able to make a comfortable living in Mexico. Barring a few inconveniences such as a lack of satisfactory liability or accident insurance, the difficulty of obtaining repair parts or vehicles, and the length of time required to receive returns from shipments, the operation of small mine is not at all difficult. It is, in fact, a little easier to find a good prospect in Mexico than in the U.S.

"A survey of 281 mineral exploration agreements examines the ratios among three ways that may be used to purchase an interest in a mineral property, viz: pay cash, pay shares and make future expenditures on the property.The dollar value of the future expenditures exceeds that of cash or shares by about nine times in most of the 110 agreements that contain cash-expenditure or share-expenditure components. Results suggest that cash and shares are treated about the same in terms of value.Buyers and sellers have opposing priorities for the way that they prefer to purchase a mineral property. These opposing priorities should give rise to a perceived 50:50 balance between cash/share payment and future expenditures to satisfy the idealized situation described by most definitions of fair market value (FMV). This balance between cash/share payments and future expenditures appears to be rationalized in negotiations to a FMV when expenditures are nine times greater than cash and/or payments.On this basis, it is proposed that the FMV of a property may be determined by aggregating the dollar amount of the cash/share payments plus one-ninth the dollar value of future expenditures, as set forth in the respective purchase agreement, and proportionately applying such aggregate to full property value."

"Magnetic surveys made by the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines in 931 and 1932 disclosed a large positive anomaly about a mile south of Bourbon, Mo. 3/ Electrical resistivity measurements made by the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Bureau of Mines in the winter of 1942-43 indicated that the source of this anomaly was in the pre-Cambrian rhyolite at a depth of more than 1,400 feet. 4/In order to determine the character of the material that caused the magnetic anomaly, which might be either a body of magnetite or a large intrusive of basic rock, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes to depths of 1,800 to 2,300 feet. Magnetite in rhyolite porphyry was encountered at 1,600 to 2,000 feet, and this is doubtless the main source of the magnetic anomaly, although it is possible that additional iron ore exists at greater depth.Hole 1 was apparently located southeast of the source of the anomaly and encountered only small stringers of magnetite. Hole 2 penetrated four mineralized zones having a total thickness of 125.7 feet and an average weighted content of 43.52 percent iron and 31.62 percent silica. These zones were tested again by a deflection hole, 2A, which gave nearly identical indications. Hole 3, 500 feet north of hole 2, penetrated 58 foot of mineralized rhyolito containing an average 43.4 percent iron.Metallurgical tests showed that the silica in the ore is tightly locked with the magnetite. After grinding to minus 100 mesh, a 66 percent iron con¬centrate with 7 percent silica was obtained by flotation."

1. INTRODUCTION It gives me great pleasure to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 30th International Conference of Safety in Mines Research Institutes. I would also like to bid a special welcome to all of the international delegates who have travelled to Johannesburg to take part in what surely be a most rewarding session of deliberations. As you come together over next four days, you will have a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and information on strategies and practices for the implementation of sustainable patterns of development. The objectives of this meeting are both timely and far-reaching, as countries around the globe work towards the sustainable use of the world resources. Each of you brings a high level of expertise to these deliberations. I know that you will make the most of this opportunity to address the challenges and opportunities to highlight the most innovative and technologically efficient methods of social protection in order to ensure an increase in the quality of life, health, safety and living environment for the peoples of the Africa. Our country, although endowed with an immense and diverse array of mineral deposits, is perhaps best known in the mining industry for the fact that it is the world’s biggest producer of gold. Although South African gold production has declined over the past years and the industry faces serious problems, it is a myth that the South African industry is moribund. There is a new energy coursing through the South African producers which will ensure their powerful presence for many years to come, based not only on their domestic production but also and probably increasingly on their external operations. Africa features prominently in the latter category.

Calcium chloride is a conspicuous example of a former waste product that has found a place for itself in the onward march of civilization. Formerly considered a troublesome constituent of the effluent sewage of many chemical manufacturing plants and salt works, it has now become a commercial product of substantial importance, with sales aggregating almost six million dollars in 1929. The point has not yet been reached where it would seem profitable to undertake large-scale production of calcium chloride as a main product, but as a byproduct it has become an item that warrants serious consideration by all who are in a position to recover it at sufficiently low cost. The largely increased demand for bromine and for certain magnesium salts, which are likewise potential byproducts associated with calcium chloride in most salt-works bitterns (and brines generally), adds further impetus to commercial research directed toward the fuller utilization of the natural saline resources of the United States.

THE purpose of this paper is to present certain data and observations resulting from a series of experiments dealing with the heat treatment and microstructure of commercial white cast iron and its derivative, malleable iron. In planning the experimental work, particular pains were taken to secure for the tests white cast iron of "normal" composition; i.e., within the composition limits commonly prescribed by manufacturers of malleable castings. A review of the literature leads us to believe that much data of a fragmentary character treating of the graphitization of white cast iron have been of little value, mainly because of the diversity in chemical composition of the materials employed in the tests. Moreover, when feasible, annealing periods at least comparable to those of current practice have been adopted. We wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to the members of the research department of the Eastern Malleable Iron Co. for the white cast iron used in the tests and, particularly, for their active cooperation during the experimental stage of the work. In this paper the following subjects will be discussed in the order indicated: Data on the thermal critical points of white cast iron and malleable iron. Changes produced in tensile properties and microstructure of white cast iron by annealing at different temperatures within the range, 760 to 1100° C. Relation of thickness of wall section of hard iron to microstructure and tensile properties of malleable iron obtained under normal annealing conditions. Notes on mechanics of graphitization of normal white cast iron as observed in specimens quenched after various periods of anneal at approximately 800° C.

These Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing (LPGMP) were prepared by the Sub-Committee on Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing. The Sub-Committee reports to the Executive Committee of the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) which is a Technical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (CIM) and incorporates those members of the CIM who are concerned with the processing of mineral deposits. The LPGMP covers the involvement of mineral processing professionals, referred to as Practitioners in this document, in providing inputs to the estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and providing technical content for internal reports as well as public reports on mineral projects as required under National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101). The LPGMP supplement the CIM Exploration Practice Guidelines (2018) and the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Practice Guidelines (2019) which are referenced in Companion Policy 43-101CP to NI 43-101 and recognized internationally. The LPGMP consist of 3 sections: • Principles of Process Support in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Estimation; • Appendix A – Use of Supporting Studies in Process Evaluation and Assessment for NI 43-101 Documentation; • Appendix B – Glossary of Terms Relevant to the LPGMP. The LPGMP deal primarily with the description of leading practice as it applies to the mineral processing and extraction of base metals, precious metals, and other mineral products by the application of mineral processing technology. Other commodities may be considered with future updates of these guidelines. It is expected that this is a ‘living’ document and that these guidelines will develop in the future to address the requirements of the mining industry, investing public, and mining professionals involved. Clarifications and changes to these guidelines will be done under the guidance of the Executive Committee of the CMP.

The Oatman District produced approximately 2.2 x 10 6 ounces of gold and 0.8 x 10 ounces of silver between 1897 and 1942. A total of 3.8 x 10 tons of ore averaging 0.58 O/T gold and 0.17 O/T silver was extracted from eight major orebodies and a number of lesser deposits. Oatman lies at the center of a trachyte-latite-rhyolite volcanic complex which contains at least one resurgent caldera. The orebodies are typical epithermal quartz-calcite + adularia lode deposits which are very deficient in sulfur. Ore deposition has occurred within dilatant zones on faults which radiate from a common point within-the complex. Fischer-Watt Mining approached the Oatman District with an integrated exploration program utilizing four basic procedures to define the characteristics of past productive areas the results of which were applied to unexplored portions of the vein system. These procedures, listed in their order of usefulness, in defining known and prospective mineralized zones are: vein contouring, detailed alteration mapping, fluid inclusion temperature determinations, and geochemical sampling.

Apogee Coal Company, DBA Arch of West Virginia, faced the challenge of drilling and blasting over one million cubic yards of high temperature overburden at its Ruffner surface operation near Logan, West Virginia. The overburden was removed above the Upper Five Block seam that was previously deep mined, abandoned, and later engulfed by fire. Borehole temperatures were measured above 700” F.

Altered and unaltered coal from the Star-Key Mine near Edmonton, Alberta has been tested under compression and under tension. The test results showed that altered coal samples have an appreciably lower strength than unaltered coal. Altered coal samples do not give a linear load-displacement curve, peak strengths are poorly defined and yielding is observed over a range of loads, so the material can be regarded as relatively plastic. However, unaltered coal samples produce a linear loading curve with a high tangential modulus and an easily distinguished peak strength at which there is a sudden brittle failure. These findings lead to important differences in the theoretical design of ribs and pillars in underground mines in the two coal types. The substantial differences in the strength properties and behaviour of the two types of coal are governed by a higher intensity of cracks in the weathered coal. Two causes of the additional cracking can be suggested-subaerial weathering and subterranean weathering of the coal.

Opportunities to improve mill operations are often cited by mining companies and recognised in many concentrators spread throughout the world but are not always followed through. Copper-molybdenum concentrator operations are challenged by a continuously increasing list of detrimental factors. They include deteriorating ore characteristics and poor mineralogical information on deeper ores, water quality and availability, steel wear and increasing power costs. Rapidly declining productivity, sustainability and environmental factors, new taxes, mining industry global skill set shortages, to name but a few, must also be considered. The days of maximising value by just increasing production or simple cost cutting are fading and will not be sufficient for the future of more complex mineral processing operations and larger plants. As a result, FLSmidth’s Global Process Technology Group has launched a plant and process optimisation program based on mineralogical and metallurgical surveys.Copper-molybdenum concentrators of the future need a paradigm shift. Modelling and simulation tools alone are not the answer to complex mineralogical associations and larger scale equipment and operations. Detailed area by area review aimed at identifying process constraints in terms of equipment and operating practice in conjunction with robust diagnostic work, ie mineralogical and metallurgical characterisation, are mandatory for process optimisation. The navigational beacon, for all operations who want to remain competitive, will be ‘process efficiency’. Since the use of automated mineral analysers has become more readily available and reliable, mineralogical-metallurgical plant surveys have proven themselves as the most efficient tool for optimising plant performance.The following paper will illustrate how operations can move toward eliminating under-performing flow sheets, fixing run-away flotation conditions, maximising individual process equipment performance, preventing shortcuts in Bond work index testing which may cause the failure of comminution models and minimising costly and time-consuming ‘debottlenecking’. As previous plant surveys have shown, the net project cash flow can be increased by 50 to 200 per cent if a combination of robust ore characterisation and plant process mineralogy is performed. The combined plant survey approach has been demonstrated successfully in a multitude of operations. For conventional aerospace aluminium alloys of the 2000 (copper) and 7000 (zinc, magnesium) series the recycling of process scrap from both metal suppliers and aircraft manufacturers is a well-established, worldwide industry. The recent introduction of a new family of alloys that incorporates lithium has posed a new challenge to the recycling industry owing to the high cost of lithium, its high reactivity to the atmosphere and to refractories and its absence from the specifications of all other registered alloys. Various process options for recycling have been identified, but vacuum distillation has been selected as the most cost-effective and technically feasible solution. Experimental work established that the separation of Li from AI-Li scrap is feasible and an industrial process has been designed. The economics of Li recovery are very sensitive to the AI-Li content of the feed material. Owing to the design of aerospace vehicle manufacturing plants it is expected that the swarf will be mixed with other alloys. A method of enriching this feed has been developed that is based on the control of swarf morphology by thermal and mechanical treatments as a precursor to eddy-current separation. After eddy-current separation and vacuum distillation small proportions of Li are retained in the AI residue. The effects of this on the properties of conventional AI-Si shape-casting alloys were investigated and safe threshold levels have been established.

Sampling drawpoints in block cave mines has been a contentious issue for many years. Doubts have been expressed as to the validity of the process used at most mines. This paper outlines the sampling practice commonly in use, discusses the resulting issues associated with reconciliation and drawpoint closure decisions. The paper also looks to the future and highlights issues for some block cave mining operations currently planned to have in the order of one thousand active drawpoints. It is likely that these operations will require a new approach to drawpoint sampling. There are several potential technologies currently available although some appear to be better suited than others to replace the current approaches. CITATION:Ross, I T, 2012. As part of a continuing program of evaluating the Nation's crude-oil resource, this report presents information pertaining to resource, primary reserve, and potential waterflood reserve for 3,209 selected reservoirs contained in 24 oil-producing States, as of January 1, 1968. To that date the selected reservoirs had not been subjected to pressure-maintenance or secondary-recovery operations. These reservoirs also met the following parameters: (1) a minimum of five oil-producing wells on January 1, 1968, (2) a minimum of 50 acres areal extent, (3) a minimum of 50,000 bbl of oil ultimate primary recovery, and (4) the principal reservoir energy was other than active water encroachment. The selected 3,209 reservoirs produced 527 million bbl of oil in 1967, about 17 pct of U.S, total production. Primary oil reserve was 4,983 million stb; in addition, there was 6,043 million stb of potential water- flood oil reserve. Oil resource in the selected reservoirs was 59,547 million stb. A brief history and outlook of waterflooding are presented for each State. Depth and producing rate statistics and geologic distributions of production, resource, reserve, and potential waterflood reserve for the selected reservoirs are presented by States in the appendix. Also included in the appendix are description, history, and technique modifications of waterflooding, and a preliminary cost estimate of a closed-system water-injection project.
