EVEN the weather man joined in a friendly conspiracy to make the fall meeting of the Industrial Minerals Division at Rolla, Mo., Oct. 23-25. the splendid surges that it was. Following weeks of rain, the foliage of the Ozarks was still green, merely enlivened here and there by splashes of autumn coloring. In contrast to the tranquil beauty of the School of Mines campus under smiling Indian summer skies, the pace of the meeting was lively. Registration was larger than at any previous meeting and included an unusual number of prominent names and delegates from all over the country. From 125 to 150 were present throughout the three technical sessions, at the Thursday evening smoker, and also at the banquet on Friday; when students trooped in to the technical sessions the audience was augmented occasionally to over 200.

Underground mine planning is characterised by a series of designs, starting with prefeasibility and culminating in operational. Information on the mineralisation and geotechnical conditions is available in increasing levels of detail, as development occurs. In the recently completed AMIRA Planning and Rapid Integrated Mine Optimisation (PRIMO) project, a methodology for producing good strategic and then tactical designs using new optimisation tools, was developed. At the strategic level, fundamental decisions must be made such as those relating to cut-off grade, bench heights, mining methods, access and haulage systems, properties of the mill, etc. The inputs are the block and financial models, geotechnical data, infrastructure and production costs, etc. Stope definition for strategic designs includes bench RLs (relative levels), orebody envelopes, and design and placement of amalgamated or simplified stopes. If multiple mining methods are under consideration, then stopes need to be associated with these. Access design must take into account decisions such as declines versus shafts, a template for level layouts and the topology of the access network. Some of the geotechnical and physical constraints are relaxed for strategic design stages. Strategic scheduling is high level, from a month to a year at a time. In the PRIMO project, software tools have been developed enabling the mine planner to rapidly produce a large number of such strategic designs. After the designs have been evaluated, the highest value designs are chosen and a small number of these can then be further refined at a tactical level. For these designs, the first step is determination of all stopes meeting physical and geotechnical requirements and constraints, allowing for complex stope shapes. Next, detailed layout of the mine access network is obtained, satisfying all operational and geotechnical constraints. Finally, more detailed scheduling is performed, over shorter time periods. The Melbourne University group has focused on optimal access design. In particular, the access network is optimised for minimum cost, taking into account the cost of haulage and development over the lifetime of the mine. Costs vary over the different parts of the network depending on the quantity of haulage and so a weighted network optimisation problem has to be solved. We have developed two software tools for this task, decline optimisation tool (DOT) and planar underground network optimiser (PUNO). DOT produces an optimal network of declines and crosscuts connecting access points on the levels to a portal or break-out point from existing infrastructure. PUNO designs the level layout, including footwall and hanging wall drives, development drives and connections to vent raises. A survey will be given of the capabilities of DOT and PUNO when used on some recent case studies. Our current goals include incorporating some aspects of ventilation design and modelling the development costs when additional ground support is required. This is an abstract only. A full paper was not prepared for this abstract.

This paper provides a brief overview of the history of the Chaffers Dewatering Project which was successfully commissioned in August 1993. Until the end of 1992 the `Superpit' and the deep mines of the Golden Mile had all been dewatered by a staged pumping system from the 28 level in the Lake View Shaft, which was removed at that time when the Lake View Mine was absorbed into the Superpit. Feasibility analysis had indicated that adaptation of oil industry technology offered the greatest potential for a low cost solution to the problem of dewatering the open pit and deep mines. A KCGM engineer and one of the authors visited the Jackson oilfields to look at the deep well pumping technology in use there in early-1991. In the final analysis a new dewatering station was established in the 23 level crushing station of the Chaffers Shaft using conventional plunger pumps, but the rising main was screwed 178 mm OD (7 inch) casing the suspended from the surface to a depth of 686 metres, and was installed using oilfield personnel and methods. Only the second installation of its kind in Australia, the project achieved the dewatering objective at about half of the capital cost of the more conventional approach and at lower operating costs as well.

No presente trabalho, processos de conformação a frio e recozimento foram aplicados à liga de magnésio ZK60A (Mg-6%Zn-1%Zr) com o objetivo de determinar a cinética dos fenômenos de recuperação e recristalização para permitir o refino de grão. Para tanto, foi desenvolvida uma série de matrizes de conformação para a trefilação incremental de barras circulares da liga ZK60A inicialmente recebida no estado envelhecido (T5), resultando em reduções de 7,8%, 15,4%, 22,6% e 29,4%. Após cada passe de trefilação, as propriedades mecânicas do material foram determinadas. O estudo do recozimento foi realizado em amostras com o máximo encruamento a temperaturas de 400°C, 350°C, 300°C, 250°C, 200°C e 150°C. Pela metodologia aplicada, foi possível avaliar a cinética do processo de recristalização da liga ZK60A e determinar a sua energia de ativação.

In the absence of any subsequent enactment of mining legislation, the Turkish mining law in effect in 1914, when Iraq became a British mandate, is still operative. The Constitution, or Organic Law, of Iraq, adopted by the Constituent Assembly on July 10, 1924, in articles 113 and 114, provides that:3 Ottoman en laws date and thao remained and lave pub- lished on or after that date and which have remained in force in Iraq u to the time of the publication of this law shall remain in force in Iraq' so far as circumstances permit, subject to any modi- fication or repeal in conformity with the proclamations, regula- tions, and laws referred to in the following article, and until they are altered or repealed by the legislative power or the High Court issues a decision rendering them null and void in accordance with the provisions of article 86. (Art. 113.) All proclamations, regulations, and laws by the Commander-in- Chief of His Britannic Majesty's Forces in Iraq, the Civil Commis- sioner, and the High Commissioner, and those issued by the Govern- ment of His Majesty King. Faisal, during the period between Novem- ber 5, 1914, and the date of the coming into force of this Consti- tution, shall be considered to be valid as from the date on which they came into force... (Art. 114.) 4 According to a German authority, it is the Turkish law of March 26, 1906, that, with a few modifications, is still in force. During the last quarter-century, exploration for metallic deposits in Maine has been sporadic with peaks generally coinciding with periods of high metal prices. Known cases of regional or semi-regional evaluations are few; most efforts have been local and usually intensive. On the basis of broad geologic groups, the State has been divided into five fundamental environments: ( 1) coastal metamorphic belt; (2) southern volcanic belt; (3) Silurian slate belt; ( 4) northern volcanic belt; and ( 5) Devonian slate belt. Although not restricted to these areas, exploration in recent years has been concentrated in the northern and southern volcanic belts. Notable examples of recent exploration activity, directed to sulfide minerals, include: ( 1) the Knox County nickel-copper-bearing ultramafic rocks; (2) the Harborside (Cape Rosier) copper-zinc deposit; (3) the Second Pond (Black Hawk) zinc-copper-lead-silver deposit; ( 4) the Big Hill-Barrett lead-zincsilver- copper-gold zones; (5) the Parmachenee copper-zinc belt; ( 6) the Moxie Lake nickeliferous peridotite; and (7) the Attean quartzmonzonite molybdenum-copper occurrences. The Second Pond and Harborside prospects appear to be close to production. Systematic investigations for non-metallic deposits appear to have been aimed principally toward limestone, asbestos, diatomaceous earth, and spodumene-bearing pegmatites. Advances in prospecting methods, high metal prices, a favorable business outlook, increasing cooperation from large landholders, and some discoveries support the probability of increased exploration activity in Maine during the coming decade.

CHANGES in mining practices have evolved so quietly and unobtrusively that perhaps we scarcely appreciate how truly startling these changes are unless we cast our minds back so as to compare the past with the present. Such retrospection is, indeed, necessary when attempting to forecast the future, for it is only by carefully reviewing the past that we can hope to obtain an indication of what the future may hold in store. In this instance, it is not necessary to delve into the very early history of . coal mining, as our purpose will be served if the last three or four decades are reviewed, a period that is still fresh within the memory of many of us. These earlier days might be termed the selective period of mining, for at that time the coal resources of the world had not been tapped to anything like the extent they are at present and this condition enabled the owners and operators to exercise selective powers and only mine such seams of coal as could be most easily reached an worked at the lowest possible cost and which, at the same time, would suit the requirements of the market. Carrying this thought of selective mining still further, the miner, who was then an artisan skilled in all the branches of his calling, was able to select or discard such parts of the seam he was working that the co al sent out of the mine was acceptable to the consumer with just the barest minimum of preparation. Compare these conditions with the? conditions prevailing today, when coal seams of medium height, good quality, and readily accessible have been largely depleted and the operator has been compelled either to carry on his operations under much greater depths of cover where the coal is more costly to win, or else to work seams of lesser height or of poorer quality.

When a company develops a mineral property in a remote area of Alaska, it must consider how best to house its personnel. This Bureau of Mines report examines the economics of two options: company towns and company camps. The price required to maintain a 15% discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) was derived for hypothetical 1,000-st/d cut-and-fill mines and 50,000-st/d open-pit mines located in three different regions of the State, One set of hypothetical mines utilizes a townsite; the other utilizes a relatively new concept, a fly-in camp or commuting operation, in which two shifts of employees operate the mine and all associated facilities for 1 week before being replaced by a second crew. The study shows that operating costs were higher for mines employing the commuting option than for mines having a company town because of the additional wages paid for overtime hours; however, the price required to obtain a 15% DCFROR for the single-product copper concentrate, f.0.b. the mill site, was significantly lower owing to the lower investment costs for the camp-type operation. The economic advantage for those mines utilizing the camp increases from south to north and from the coast toward the interior.

Approximately half of all the fuel energy used in the United states is now pro-vided by oil and natural gas. A persistent and rapid growth in energy demand during the last 3 decades has been absorbed largely by the liquid and gaseous rather than solid fuels. In 1948 the energy provided by coal was substantially the same as in 1920. Meanwhile, the use of oil and natural gas each had increased fivefold. On a per capita basis, the change is more significant. Coal consumption has dropped from about 6 tons per person to 4-1/2 tons, while oil has increased from 4-1/3 barrels to 14-1/3, and natural gas from 7,500 cubic feet to about 35,000. These facts would have only academic interest if the United States had unlimited supplies of all fuels. However, while the Nation's reserves of coal are adequate to meet our needs for centuries, those of oil and natural gas appear limited. It is obvious, therefore, that the security of our liquid-fuel position would be greatly enhanced if the supply could be based in an increasing degree on solid fuels, such as coal and oil shale, which make up more than 95 percent of our fuel reserves, instead of natural oil and gas. In addition, this would create new employment and help to stabilize the market for coal, which may be facing comparatively bleak prospects in the near future unless its position with respect to other fuels is improved.

The performance of the U.S. economy in 1977 was similar to that in 1976 which, in turn, had been a considerable improvement over 1974-75. In 1977 real gross national product (GNP) showed a similar, but some-what slower, growth pattern compared with 1976. Real GNP increased sharply in the first quarter of the year followed by smaller increases for the remaining three quarters. With only two exceptions, the monthly unemployment rate declined or remained steady throughout 1977, falling to a low for the year in December. The inflation rate in 1977 was slightly higher than in 1976, but the rate still remained far below that of 1974-75. Total U.S. output as measured by GNP in current dollars rose 10.8% in 1977. Real GNP in constant 1972 dollars increased 4.9%, and inflation, as measured by the implicit price deflator, rose 5.6%. In real terms, gross private domestic investment for residential structures increased 19.3% in 1977, only slightly below the 22.9% rise in 1976; State and local government expenditures increased 1.1 % in 1977; and personal consumption expenditures for services rose 4.5%.

The overall disabling work injury experience, excluding office- workers, at nometal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, as reported to the Bureau of Mines by operators, was 77 fatal and 7,201 nonfatal injuries during an aggregate worktime of 335,029,685 man- hours. These injuries, fatal and nonfatal combined, occurred at a frequency rate of 21.72 per million man-hours, comprising 0.23 for the fatal and 21.49 for the nonfatal injuries. The combined severity rate of the disabilities was 2,312 days lost or charged per million man-hours, consisting of 1,379 for the fatal and 933 of the nonfatal injuries, The average severity of all disabilities during 1961-63, was 106 days per injury, The number of days lost or charged, excluding officeworkers, at nonmetal mines and mills during 1961-63, was 462,000 days charged to fatal injuries and 312,461 days lost from nonfatal injuries. The outstanding causes for fatal injuries were explosions (18 fatalities occurred in a major mine-explosion disaster in a potash mine in Utah in 1963) and falls of rock or ore from back or side, while most nonfatal injuries were caused by handling materials, slips or falls of persons, haulage, and machinery. The parts of the body most frequently injured during the period 1961-63 were the trunk, hand and finger, and foot and toe, An average of 52,810 men were at work daily, There were 20 nonfatal disabling injuries reported for office- workers at nonmetal mines and mills during the period 1961-63 during an aggregate worktime of 23,088,496 man-hours, These injuries occur- red at a frequency rate of 0.87 per million man-hours, There were no fatal injuries reported.

[The oil-producing district, "Southern Oklahoma," is generally considered to be that part of the: State lying; southwest of the Arbuckle Mountains. It includes six counties: Carter, Cotton, Garvin, Jefferson, Kiowa, and Stephens. At present cost of the oil is produced from formations of Pennsylvania age. The individual crude oils resemble those produced in other parts of the State, except that the sulfur content is rather high. This report is a continuation of a study of Oklahoma crude oils3/ being made, by the Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla. in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma. Analyses are given of 27 samples obtained from 21 fields in the southern part of the State, end the physical and chemical characteristics of these crude oils are discussed briefly. Analyses of crude oils from other Oklahoma areas and publications in which these analyses may be found are listed in tables 2 and 3.]

Introduction The great importance of air warfare during World War II and the introduction of large-scale air transportation and airborne operations created an immediate demand for large quantities of high quality light alloy products. Before this war, the use of magnesium, the lightest structural metal, was barely in the development stage, and considerable research work was needed to overcome difficulties in improving its properties and to attain uniform quality in mass production of magnesium alloy products. The Canadian Bureau of Mines was frequently called upon, by various agencies of the Armed Forces and of the newly established war industries, to examine magnesium alloys that had failed in fabrication or in actual service, and to advise on proper alloys and fabrication methods to be used. Failures in magnesium alloy castings were connected mainly with lack of knowledge of proper founding and surface-protecting techniques. Most of the defects were due to microporosity and faulty heat treatment. To aid the foundry industry, small-scale investigations were started on the effect of various factors in the casting technique in order to improve the quality of the products. These investigations were made in co-operation with representatives of the Armed Forces and the Canadian magnesium industry. This work was later co-ordinated into a broad research programme on magnesium alloys, comprising problems on melting, refining, various casting methods, heat treatment, and testing of properties of standard and special alloys. This research programme? is still in force, and the present paper contains some results of the first series of investigations on magnesium casting alloys carried out at the Experimental Foundry of the Bureau of Mines.

"IntroductionTHE OPINION is held by many persons outside the mining industry, and by some within it, that mine •operators customarily find it advantageous to mine •only the richer parts of orebodies and to leave behind, perhaps permanently, leaner material which could be mined only at a lesser profit. This opinion and the inference which might be drawn from it that 'gutting' of mineral resources is a common feruture• of the mining industry are prejudicial to the intertsts of the industry and deserve careful scrutiny. Oddly enough, a theory of mine economics which gives much support for the opinion was advanced first by members of the mining profession itself, has been repeated •several times in mining literature, and to my knowledge has never been adequately refoted.According to the theory, selective mining of the rich ore first on a large scale will yield substantial gains and these gains do not merely reflect the desire of 'money minded investors' for a quick return but derive from the logical application of compound interest rates and the concept of ;present value. W. O. Hotchkiss and R. D. Parks (1) illustrate the reasoning with a hypothetical example in which an orebody of 4,000,000 tons may be mined either in its entirety in forty years at $1.00 per ton profit or selectively with the recovery of only the richest half in twenty years at $1.50 per ton profit. They show that, with Hoskold rates of 4 and 8 per cent, the present value of profits from mining only the richer 2,000,000 tons exceeds the present value of profits :from mining the whole orebody by about 20 per cent."

This report summarizes the principal activities and results of 15 years of research by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, on methane control in coal mines. This research has investigated fundamental factors regarding the occurrence and movement of methane in coal beds, removal of methane prior to mining, and control of methane during mining. The report includes a bibliography listing the more than 150 publications resulting from the Bureau's methane control program as well as numerous other references, a section on methane recovery and use, a look at the upcoming Bureau of Mines research program, and a brief review of methane drainage practices in other coal-producing countries.

"The rocks of Notre Dame Bay form part of the Central Paleozoic Mobile Belt (Williams, 1964) of the Newfoundland Appalachians. The Central Paleozoic Mobile Belt of the northern part of the island consists predominantly of Lower and Middle Ordovician rocks overlain by Silurian elastic and volcanic sequences and underlain in the marginal zones of the belt by polydeformed metamorphic rocks of the Gander Lake Group (Kennedy and McGonigal, 1972) in the northeast and the Fleur de Lys Supergroup (Neale and Nash, 1963; Kennedy, Phillips and Neale, 1972) in the northwest. The Ordovician rocks of the Central Mobile Belt have been subdivided into a number of local groups in different parts of the region. The Lush's Bight Group was first defined by MacLean (1947) . Recently Marten (1971) has revised the definition of this group, as shown in Table 1 and his revised definition is accepted in the present paper. Plate tectonic models that have been proposed for the development of the Newfoundland Appalachian System have indicated that the mafic volcanic rocks of western Notre Dame Bay represent oceanic crust (Bird and Dewey, 1970; Dewey and Bird, 1971; Church and Stevens, 1970) which marks the remnants of the proto-Atlantic Ocean first proposed by Wilson (1966) . Such models infer that the mafic volcanic rocks constitute the upper part of an ophiolite sequence. Analyses of the lavas show that they are tholeiitic and support this conclusion (Papezik and Fleming, 1967; Smitheringale, 1972) . A complete ophiolite sequence, consisting of peridotites overlain by gabbros, overlain by a sheeted diabase dyke complex which passes upward into pillow lavas, occurs at the base of the Snooks Arm Group (Upadhyay et al., 1971 ) . Sheeted diabase dykes are known to underlie the lowest mafic pillow lavas of the Lush's Bight Group at several localities in Notre Dame Bay (Strong, 1972, and pers. comm.) . However, several conflicting points about the geology of this region suggest that although a typical oceanic crustal sequence of Lower Ordovician age is present, older rocks occur within the ophiolite terrane in several places (Williams, Kennedy and Neale, 1972) ."

The effect of impurities on the flowsheet in the smelting and refining circuits for copper, lead and zinc is reviewed and the interflow of by-poduct metals from copper, lead and zinc plants is pointed out. The principal points of separation of all impurities in the circuits are indicated and the additional steps added to these circuits in order to effect impurity separation me shown. In this day and age, when difficult metallurgy is mentioned, one thinks of the extraction of more refractory or possibly the alkaline earth or rare-earth metals. It is true that the extraction of metals having a high affinity for oxygen and deleterious solubility for that element in the liquid metal, affords some of the most difficult extractive metallurgy problems. When this is coupled with an affinity for hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon a devious approach is required that sometimes rivals the complexity of the metallurgy with which this paper deals. Introduction In 1937, the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, was carrying on an extensive exploratory diamond-drilling programme. Most of this drilling was done on the 4100 level, the lowest working level in the mine. One of the exploratory diamond-drill holes, at approximately 12,500 feet from the portal of the tunnel, encountered heavily mineralized stringers of chalcopyrite and sphalerite in silicified grey schist. The mineralization was encountered just to the hanging-wall of the green mottled schist at a point 350 feet south of the 4100 tunnel. To delimit this new orebody, drifts and cross-cuts were driven on 3500, 3800, and 4100 levels to the hanging-wall in the area of the projected mineralization. On the 3500 level, the top of the mineralized zone was encountered. The zone was thoroughly explored by drifting and diamond drilling. The mineralization, however, was not sufficiently concentrated to be of commercial grade. On the 3800 level, the zone was found to consist of disconnected stringers of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Drifting was continued to the west and a long lens-shaped area of grey schist containing fairly heavy stringers of chalcopyrite was delimited. This lens later proved to be very close to the top of the commercial mineralization of the No. 8 orebody. On the 4100 level, a diagonal cross-cut was driven to the footwall of the downward projection of the mineralized zone. Diamond-drill holes from this cross-cut indicated a zone of heavy mineralization. A drift was driven off the cross-cut parallel to the zone and some distance to the footwall of it. Further diamond drilling disclosed a mineralized zone approximately 300 feet long and 35 feet wide containing sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite. The foregoing development work indicated a fairly large lens of mineralization of sufficient concentration to be classed as ore between the 4100 and 3800 levels. To explore this mineralization at depth, long diamond drill holes, dipping at minus 57° and minus 80°, were planned from some point to the hanging-wall of the orebody. The 4100 level was not suitable for small development headings, due to wider gauge track and larger cars than on the levels above. Therefore, a raise was driven from the diagonal cross-cut on the 4100 level to a point some 70 feet above and just inside the footwall of the orebody. From the top of the raise, drifts were expanded east and west to delimit the ore zone. In addition, a long cross-cut was driven 350 feet to the hanging-wall, and drifts were opened east and west from the end of the cross-cut to provide diamond-drill stations for the exploration of the orebody at depth.

PlannersÆ optimism (or maybe commercial necessity) means that most mine plans use equipment rates that are rarely achieved (Lumley and Beckman, 2009). This lack of understanding of what equipment actually moves is causing erroneous equipment forecasts, leading to incorrect mine development plans and economic evaluations. Compounding this problem is a downward trend in actual equipment performance in some areas. Consequently, the presentation of realistic mine plans that are actually achieved in practice is not a common occurrence. However, rational, fact-based mine planning is available to those who want it. Hundreds of millions of cycles of data from open cut mining equipment has been collected from mines around the world since 1992. This unique and highly valuable databank is growing at an exponential rate and is being used by a number of our big miners to support rational and fact-based decision-making. However, neither the use nor the appreciation of the value of this data is universal. There is a challenge to everyone in the mining industry - how do you access value from it? The databank was drilled into and the results analysed for, the Australasian Mining and Metallurgical Operating Practices (AMMOP) publication (Lumley, in press). For this paper the analysis has been extended to include interpretation of trends for draglines, shovels, excavators and trucks. It investigates trends between coal and non-coal mines and across geographic areas. It is known that mining equipment performance in most sections of the industry is falling. This paper attempts to quantify the fall and provide explanations. The trends are analysed to extract the reasons behind the changes and most importantly, what can be done about it.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2012.
