The foundry industry is a basic source of structural component for all industry. Millions of tons of castings are produced annually in both ferrous and nonferrous alloys. These castings are subjected to a wide variety of heat treatments, finishing techniques, mechanical tests and machining operations. Through all of these steps the quality of the casting is of paramount importance to the end use of the product. The Quality Assurance Program at Minneapolis Electric Steel Castings Company is designed and established to provide a superior product for both original equipment manufacturers and the mining industry.

An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an intensive leach reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in December 2007. There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every ten per cent of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1 per cent to one per cent additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall four per cent gain in plant recovery. With total gold recovery of 12 per cent in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54 g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600 g/t in the concentrator feed to the inline reactor. The recovery of gold in the inline reactor is in excess of 98.5 per cent. This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory test work prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefi ts of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.

For most practical rock engineering purposes, stress versus strength conditions around underground openings for which rock masses fail and their various modes of failure, are reasonably well-understood and predictable. Some rock masses and particular rock types fail slowly and relatively quietly. However, others can fail rapidly, violently and maybe with the ejection of significant broken rock. In some countries and in some mines, the latter style of violent fracturing and failure of the rock mass is referred to as ‘strain bursting’. It can be alarming and extremely hazardous to nearby miners and machines. For such situations, the design and installation of appropriate ground support, to provide a safe work place, can be challenging. At any particular mine site, it’s often generally understood which local rock masses (rock types) are prone to strain bursting. Competent and strong siliceous rocks and some massive sulphides are often the main offenders. While some neighbouring, equally-competent and strong rocks might also fail, they do so more quietly and without ejection. To understand this contrast, a better understanding of the fracturing process is required other than simple and standard strength versus stress considerations. Suites of standard intact rock properties from numerous Australian mines have been used to define and help understand different high-stress failure styles for component intact rock; especially those prone to violent fracturing (strain bursting). Simple considerations of micro-fracturing (defects in the intact material), plus the available energy at failure versus the energy consumed during fracturing, distinguishes between over-stressed and competent rock types that fracture violently and those that don’t. In the late 19th century, the discovery of rich nickel-copper sulfide ore bodies in Sudbury and the need for tonnage quantities of the metal to be used in nickel steel armor provided the foundation for establishing the Canadian nickel industry. For almost 50 years, International Nickel was the key player. In 1930, Falconbridge Nickel entered the field. These two companies remain the key Canadian nickel producers. This paper discusses the factors that have influenced the evolution of nickel smelting processes. The initial Sudbury ore smelting and nickel copper separation technologies were imported from abroad. It was only in 1937 that International Nickel established a process research laboratory in Copper Cliff The explosive post WW II industrial development created a strong demand for a broader variety of nickel products. For both International Nickel and Falconbridge, R&D became an essential business tool to succeed in the new market scenery. In the last few decades, new technologies were developed and commercialized to respond to the raising cost of energy, society pressing environmental concerns, the advent of nickel laterites as an important source of new metal, the incorporation of new nickel producers to the market, and, therefore, the need to increase productivity. Canada thus became an important exporter of technology. In this paper, the authors review this history with the objective of highlighting the forces that have triggered the most important changes in Canadian nickel smelting.

Most U.S. coal production is bituminous coal. Some 90% of current production comes from a geographical area enclosed in a circle with a 300 mile radius and its center at about Huntington, West Virginia. There are important underground coal production areas in the western parts of the United States as well. Most U.S. coal production comes from fairly level seams, many of which pitch rather uniformly only a few feet per mile. Usually there will be several overlying seams of varying thicknesses, separated by several tens of feet. Fig. 1. 1. Seams have minor local undulations but these? are small enough not to be a major consideration in a horizontal drilling research program.

The problems of slope stability in open cast mines are examined. A criterion, the instantaneous stripping ratio, is suggested for use in the design of pit slopes and as an index of control at all stages of the exploitation of the orebody. This criterion may also be related to safety and to the maximizing of profits. Two approaches to safe design of slopes, one from the point of view of soil mechanics and the other from the point of view of rock mechanics, are described and critically compared. The effect on slope stability of the regional tectonic stress field is discussed. Explanation is given of the application of the Terzaghi effective stress concept to problems in both soil and rock environments, including possible effects when borehole deformation techniques are used to measure stresses in rock in situ. A company embarking on open cast mining is faced with two basic questions: 1) will the venture be profitable and 2) can it be carried out with safety? The two questions are obviously interrelated because both depend upon the slope angles adopted for the pit. The cost of open cast mining depends largely upon the stripping ratio, defined as the volume of overburden that must be removed to the volume of ore recovered. The steeper the slope angles, the more favorable the stripping ratio, but the stability of the slopes, and therefore the safety of men and materials in the pit, require that the angles be made relatively flat. Consequently, the design depends upon a compromise: the slopes must be steep enough to result in economical mining and flat enough to ensure safety. Today there is a world trend towards deeper mining by open cast methods. This is mainly due to the higher cost of underground mining and the lower cost of open excavation resulting from the introduction of large modern earth and rock-moving machinery. Deeper open cast mining has led to a very great increase in the volumes of wasted overburden, and much thought is being given to the considerable economic benefits which would result if pit slopes could be made steeper by even one or two degrees. The result has been an increasing interest in research into slope stability problems in the expectation that the application of scientific principles will provide solutions leading both to economies and to more predictable operation of the mines. In at least four places, the U.S., Australia, Western Germany and Southern Africa, comprehensive investigations are at present in progress, and it is the object of this paper to review some of the more important aspects of these programs. RELATION BETWEEN ECONOMY OF OPERATION AND SLOPE ANGLES The main object of any industrial enterprise in a free economy is to make a profit. In mining, where profits must be made from a wasting capital asset, a further definition of the profit motive is imposed, namely that the economic aim should be to maximize the total possible profit. But since profits deferred for a number of years are not as valuable as profits that are immediately available, it is usual to discount deferred profits at some rate of interest which reflects their current or present value in the hands of the investor. Thus, in mining the logical aim can be defined more closely still: to maximize the present value of the total future profits. In commercial terms the present value represents the market value of the operation as a going concern. Many factors enter into the forecast of current and future profits. They include the volume of production, the price of the salable product and the cost of production. Current profits can be estimated with reasonable accuracy by the operating engineers; but it is the task of economists and management to assess future trends in the mineral markets and in the economy as a whole, and together with the engineers, they can then estimate the future cost and profitability of the mining operations. In open cast mining, the rate of ore production once decided on remains a virtually constant factor unless a major change in the capital structure of the mine is made. It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. "IntroductionON THE LAST DAY of December, 1951, a half-century of steel production was completed in the open hearth department of Dominion Iron & Steel, Limited, in Sydney, Nova Scotia.During that period, almost every known variation of basic steel making practice was used in working out a steel making process which would overcome the difficult metallurgical problems imposed by the use of Cape Breton coal and Wabana ore.This paper is presented as a brief review of these steel making practices, setting forth the fundamental metallurgical factors involved in their success or failure.Establishing the IndustryThe story of steel production at Sydney is closely interwoven with that of coal. The steel industry owes its inception to a desire on the part of the Dominion Coal Company, which was incorporated in 1893, to improve its marketing position by increasing sales of slack coal and providing a year-round demand for its product. Accordingly, the Dominion Iron and Steel Company, Limited, was incorporated on March 30th, 1899, with Mr. H. M. Whitney -who was President of the Dominion Coal Company -as its first President. The new Company was given powers to manufacture and process iron and steel, and to mine all minerals, including coal.A strong inducement to the industry was the bounty offered by the Dominion Government for the production of both iron and steel."

This publication is a revision of the first of a series of four Miners' Circulars originally prepared and issued in 19'29 for use in a course of training designed to prepare mine officials to organize men for rescue and recovery operations. These circulars were revised in 1937 and 1938 and again in 1948. This circular (Miners' Circular 33) discusses mine gases and methods for detecting them. The second of this series (Miners' Circular 34) gives instruction in Bureau of Mines methods of sampling and analysis of mine gases; the third (Miners' Circular 35) describes methods and equipment used for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures used in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in recovery operations after mine fires or mine explosions.

The necessity of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit the impact of anthropogenic climate change means that all industrial processes should investigate their options towards decarbonization. Iron, steelmaking, aluminium, and cement production produce the most industrial emissions. Although most research focuses on decarbonizing these industries, minerals processing industries must be decarbonized to achieve net zero emissions goals by 2050. Incorporating renewable energy sources and avoiding the combustion of fossil fuels are two ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reports on the results from a dynamic process model developed to investigate the feasibility of concentrating solar thermal pretreatment of manganese ores to pretreat carbonate-rich manganese ores for increased ferromanganese smelter productivity and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The results indicate that pretreated ores reduce the energy requirement for smelting significantly for some ores and lowers total carbon dioxide emissions by 13 to 19% compared to the traditional smelting route. A high-level economic evaluation shows that solar thermal treatment is financially viable for low cryptomelane, high braunite ore that is common in the Kalahari Manganese Field.

UOCK bursts are a phenomenon about which insufficient is known. This l.~ statement has a twofold meaning. In the first place, far too many people, both inside and outside of the mining industry, are woefully ignorant of the whole subject, and secondly, as those who are face to face with the problem in the mines realize, our knowledge of rock bursts is inadequate. The first group embraces the general public, who have never been enlightened on the subject, and a great many geologists and engineers who have never shown more than a curiosity about it. Such technical men do not realize what a vital problem it is to our mining industries. They are usually thankful that bursting ground is not their problem, and leave it to those unfortunate enough to run into it. From such men one often hears the pious opinion that if proper mining methods were used there would be no problem. It is hoped that this paper will give these people a different viewpoint. Those in the second group deserve much credit for what they have done and are doing. They are fighting a large and difficult problem. In the pages that follow, I have tried to give a bird's-eye view of that problem, and suggest new ways in which it may be attacked.

"The Sangan iron-ore mines (SIOM) in Iran are located in a remote area, near the Afghanistan border. The deposit of SIOM is containing a geological resource of 1.2 billion tons of mostly magnetite with a Fe grade ranging from 27 to 61 %. The Iranian government plans a stepwise development of SIOM in cooperation with private companies to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. Sustainable development (SD) is an influential ethical concept in mining all around the world. However, a successful realization of a SD is not possible without a foundation on the core values and regarding the specific circumstances of the individual mining country. This paper introduces SIOM and describes SD activities undertaken during its development. From the early stages, these activities have been realized to secure the acceptance of the stakeholders in the region. To evaluate their effects, indicators could be filtered as the ones with the highest priority for the stakeholders. Moreover Islamic values and Iranian regulations and their influences on SIOM have been analyzed. Keywords: Iran, Sustainable Mining, SIOM, Evaluation, Islamic Values INTRODUCTION Mining Industry in Iran The Islamic Republic of Iran holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, gypsum, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, iron etc., with 37 billion tons of proven reserves and more than 57 billion tons of potential reservoirs. Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral rich countries (1). In accordance with the statistics published by Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), there were 5.316 active mines and 84.922 employees in the whole country in 2012-13 (2) and according to the statistics published by Central Bank of Iran (CBI) in 2011 the share of this sector in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country was 1.2 per cent (3). Sangan Iron Ore Mines (SIOM) The deposit of SIOM is one of the largest iron-ore deposits in Iran, also considered to be one of the Middle East’s richest deposits, which contains a total geological resource of 1.2 billion tons of mostly magnetite with a Fe grade ranging from 27 to 61%. It is located 300 km southeast from Mashhad, the capital of Khorasan-e-Razavi Province, and 18 km northeast of Sangan town, in Khaf County, at latitude N34°24’, longitude E60°16’ in the north-eastern Khorasan-e-Razavi Province, 30 km west of the Afghanistan border (4) (Figure 1). SIOM is owned by the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO). IMIDRO intends to develop an open pit mine complex and supporting facilities in SIOM for the production of about 20 Mtpy of iron oxide concentrate and pellets in four developing phases (5)."

The purpose of this program was to demonstrate the feasibility of Illuminating various types of underground coal mining machinery as required by the Federal Coal Mine Illumination Standards Part 75.1719 to 75.1719-4 Code of Federal Regulations Title 30. Nine various machines were illuminated and the illumination systems were evaluated for a 3 month period of operation. Factors evaluated were ease of implementation, reliability, ease of maintenance, acceptance by mine workers and operators, Illumination degradation and durability.

Little drilling has been done in Kentucky and Tennessee in 1923, with the exception of the Kettle Creek area on the Kentucky-Tennessee line. Oil prices fluctuated between $2.86 and $1.36 Per bbl. for light oil. The Kentucky production was slightly over 8,000,000 bbl., being 1,000,000 bbl. less than during 1922. Tennessee production was approximately 8500 bbl., being a decrease of 1000 bbl, over. 1922. During 1923, the first producing well was brought in, in Clay County, Tenn. Production in Tennessee will undoubtedly increase considerably in 1924, and Kentucky production will probably increase slightly. THE year 1923 has been a dull period in oil development in Kentucky and Tennessee, with the exception of the Kettle Creek area along the Tennessee-Kentucky line, in Clinton and Cumberland Counties, Kentucky, and Clay County, Tennessee. The price of oil during the year has been so low that wildcatters have shown little interest in drilling. At the beginning of the year, light oil sold for $2.31 per barrel and medium oil for $2.06 per, barrel. Prices increased to the highest point for the year in February, when light oil brought $2.86 per barrel and medium oil, $2.61. In April, prices had declined 35 c. while in May an additional decline of 25 c. went into effect. During June, prices declined 20 c. per barrel; during July, 45 c. per barrel; remained stationary during August and September, and dropped during November and December to the low price of $1.36 per barrel for light and $1.21 for medium oil. At present, an increase of 29 c. has brought the price of light oil up to $1.55, and indications are that the price will continue to increase during the coming months. It can readily be seen that during 1923 the price of oil was such as to prevent any drilling except that necessary to hold leases and to maintain production enough to take care of overhead expenses.

Geologically, the Williston Basin is a large structural depression of sedimentary rock in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota and Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada. The approximate It-mite of the basin are shown on figure 1; it is roughly circular with a diameter of about 400 miles and contains approximately 120,000 square miles. Although the petroleum potentialities in this area had long been recognized, it had not been vigorously prospected by the petroleum industry because of its geographic location, rigorous winters, depths to possibly productive zones, difficult geological problems, and the fact that more seemingly favorable areas were available for prospecting. With the discovery of oil near Edmonton, Alberta, in the prolific Devonian reefs, an incentive was given to explore for oil in the southeast extension of the same sedimentary trough, the Williston Basin. The Virden field discovery in southwestern Manitoba in January 1951 was a direct result of this southeastward movement. Discovery of this shallow field was followed soon after by discovery of' deep production on the Nesson anticline in North Dakota at Clarence Iverson No. 1 well. North Dakota then became the twenty-seventh petroleum-producing State.

Abstract This paper lists the interests of the Physical Metallurgy and Chemical Research laboratories of the Metallgesellschaft, which were visited by the authors, members of a group of Canadian investigators sent to Germany by the Department of Reconstruction in 1945. The Physical Metallurgy Research Laboratory The following information was obtained from Professor E. Schmid, Chief of the laboratories. It is understood that Dr. Schmid is a former Nazi and was to be removed from his post in November (1945). Aluminium Research The laboratories investigated the corrosion resistance of the high-strength aluminium-magnesium-zinc alloys. The same test procedure as used by V.L.W. was followed and Dr. Schmid co-operated closely with Dr. Brenner on this project. Intercrystalline corrosion was combatted by additions of chromium, titanium, or vanadium, and the work in this field parallels that of Dr. Brenner of V.L.W. * Dr. Schmid reports that Bollenrath and Siebert believe that corrosion difficulties with these alloys can be overcome to some extent by heat treatment. He himself was of opinion that the correct answer lay not only in correct alloying but also in correct heat treatment. The heat treatment involved either interrupted quenching or a change in quenching rate from a solution temperature of 500°C. The procedure is either a slower cooling from solution temperature or an interrupted cooling with a holding period at l50°C. Work had been done on piston alloys, the 11-13% Si, 1% Ni, 1% Cu, and 1% Mg being the favoured material. This is called Lo-Ex and is similar to Mahle 124 or KS1275.

With the increasing demand for metalliferous and mineral raw materials and the consequent depletion of the global natural resource base, the possible utilization of secondary raw material sources is receiving more and more attention. In the present study, we present results from a detailed vanadium deportment study of three basic oxygen furnace slag (BOS) samples known to containing elevated bulk concentrations of vanadium. Complementary analytical methods that were used to quantify the abundance and composition of V-containing phases include SEM-based automated mineralogy, X-ray fluorescence analysis, and X-ray powder diffraction as well as electron probe microanalysis. The vanadium deportment was quantified using Monte-Carlo simulations of the data obtained from automated mineralogy and electron microprobe analysis. The total V concentrations identified by XRF are between 1.7 and 2.2 wt.% V. The most important hosts of vanadium are larnite-, brownmillerite- and portlandite-solid solutions. In two samples Ca carbonates also significantly contribute to the V deportment, while wuestite, lime, and native iron do not contribute significantly to the vanadium deportment. A thorough consistency check identifies considerable uncertainties in the density of the V-bearing phases as the most likely reason to explain remaining discrepancies between measured and calculated V values.

Engineering trends for some years have been toward higher temperatures, both in process work and in steam generation. Progress in design has been dependent upon the development and evaluation of suitable alloys. Elementary knowledge of the limitations of copper-base alloys indicate their unsuitability for the higher ranges of operating temperatures; say, for steam to 950°F. Emphasis upon the more severe conditions perhaps is a reason why more complete evaluations have not been made for copper-base alloys over their range of suitability. However, the few studies made show clearly the need for more accurate evaluations. Some copper-base alloys long looked upon favorably because of superior room-temperature properties are not as desirable as some others perhaps not so "strong" and "hard," as measured by usual acceptance tests. Load-carrying capacity and structural stability arc two important factors. Structural stability as influenced by temperature, by presence of corrosive media, or by the effects of stress itself, frequently is a limiting factor. An early reference to creep properties of the cast copper-base alloys is that of Brown1 (Admiralty gun metal, Cu 87.5, Sn 10.1, Zn 2.3 and Pb 0.08). His tests were similar to present-day stress-rupture tests without measurement of creep elongrttion. Loading was in steps with usually 24 hr. between steps, and continued until failure. He advocated a "useful strength value" of 61/2 tons (I4,560 Ib.) per sq. in. at 572°F. (300°C.). A specimen broken in 1/2 hr. at 572°F. had a strength of 21 tons (26,880 Ib.) per sq. in. The strength values as determined by 1/2-hr. tests and those by the longer stress-rupturc start to differentiate at 392°F. (200°C). This is the temperature at which time at load began to play an important part. Bolton, Price and Hebemann2 give creep curves on 88-10-2 (A.S.T.M. B-60, CU 88, Sn 10, Zn 2) and steam or valve bronze (A.S.T.M. B-6I, Cu 87.50, Sn 6.00, Zn 3.75, Pb 1.70) at 500°F. Direct comparison of the two alloys under 7500 lb. per sq. in. stress showed the steam bronze (A.S.T.M. B-61) superior in creep strength to the 88-10-2 (A.S.T.M. B-60). The steam bronze shows no creep after 700 hr. (1540-hr. test). The 88-10-2 shows a rate of about 7.0 per cent in 100,000 hr. over the last 700 hr. of the test. Creep curves on the steam bronze are also given at the same temperature (500°F.) with loads of 6500 lb. per sq. in. and 8000 lb. per sq. in. These indicate "creep strengths" (creep rate within I per cent in 100,000 hr.) in excess of 8000 lb. per sq, in. for this alloy. THERE is a road into the microscopic realm that has remained untraveled through all these years of intense activity with high-power optical and electron microscopy. The road is worthy of careful scouting by metallurgists and other investigators, for it leads into relatively new country and it makes some areas accessible that heretofore could be reached only by very indirect paths or by the use of imagination. And when the road passes through familiar territory it frequently permits a new view of commonplace things that should prove of value from time to time. An accepted way to interest people in new sights such as this is to present an illustrated travelogue. This I propose to do, using many pictures taken in my recent exploration of this road. In the manner of travelogues, I shall touch briefly upon a large number of different subjects in physical metallurgy and shall, attempt to give an exhaustive treatment of none, for the objective is to provide a means for further research, to interest others in it, and to indicate what appears at the moment to be profitable directions for it to take. The method I shall present involves X-rays, but does not make use of the usual accompaniments of X-ray research such as reciprocal lattices, Fourier series, or the stereographic projection. The method is so simple in its fundamentals that it could have been developed 20 years ago, or perhaps even 30 years ago. It is well to have a destination for our travels, so that when we are through we shall have explored some region of importance, despite our preoccupation with the novel means of transportation and our interest in the sights to be seen along the way. So let us name the Cold Worked State as our destination, and make side trips into the territories known as Recovery, Recrystallization, and Precipitation-hardening. A great many investigations have been made of the nature of cold-worked metal, and a great variety of methods used, many of which are indirect, such as X-ray line intensities, X-ray line widths, calorimetric measurements, and magnetic measurements. Since comprehensive reviews of these investigations have been published in recent years, they need not be discussed here. The investigations that were the direct forerunners of the present work should be first mentioned. In 1931 I became interested in the structure of individual spots in X-ray diffraction patterns.1 When a crystal is placed in the narrow pencil of X-rays in a Laue camera, the spots recorded on the film are not always uniformly black, but may have an internal structure. The meaning of this may be understood from Fig. 1, which represents a narrow beam containing X-rays of many wave lengths ("general radiation") penetrating a crystal in the direction of the arrow and forming a pattern on the vertical film at the right.
