The use of activated carbon for gold recovery has been known for years, but came industrially on stream since the years seventies.Despite several years of experience, the criteria for selecting a carbon have not been clearly determined so far.This paper will try to highlight the user through his experience, on the most important factors which should affect his decision.We will develop:- Physical characteristics - Adsorption characteristicsand try to show that slight variations on these characteristics may have important consequences on the plant design and profitability.

A produtividade de uma linha de moldagem numa fundição é determinada pela vida de banca dos moldes. No processo com resina fenólica alcalina (Alphaset), a cura ocorre devido à reação de polimerização entre a resina e o catalisador orgânico ester. O tempo no qual a reação de polimerização ocorre é influenciado por dois fatores: temperatura e a relação entre a quantidade de resina e catalisador (vazão mássica). Esse estudo procura estabelecer um entendimento entre estes dois fatores no tempo de banca, estabelecendo o mais predominante, para que assim possa-se aperfeiçoar o processo utilizando a quantidade adequada de resina e catalisador, sem perder a produtividade. Para avaliar o efeito da temperatura no tempo de banca foi realizado o teste de gel time com a resina em diversas temperaturas. Para avaliar a variação da vazão mássica da resina devido as diferentes condições de temperaturas foi realizado o ensaio com o Copo Ford. Observou-se que o tempo de polimerização da resina reduz exponencialmente com o aumento da temperatura da resina, sendo o inverso verdadeiro também. O teste com o Copo Ford mostrou que a vazão da resina é muito sensível a temperatura, aumentando quase 40% num acréscimo de 10oC na temperatura.

"Estimation of stress state as well as elastic modulus is important for the prediction of a rock slope deformation in an open pit mine since it can strongly influence the mining-induced deformation of the rock slope. This study applies a method to evaluate regional stress state and Young’s modulus by analysing the mining-induced deformation of ground. The effect of changes in regional strain state due to tectonic plate motion can be accounted for using the proposed method. Mining-induced deformation can manifest itself as changes in ground surface geometry resulting from mining activity. There are three underlying factors that can contribute to the deformation: displacement induced by the effect of gravity displacement induced by the effect of horizontal regional strain incremental change in the horizontal regional strain. The relative displacement arising from the mining excavation at the Torigatayama limestone mine in Japan has been measured by Global Positioning System (GPS). Both the regional stress state and Young’s modulus were estimated by back analysis of the change in distance between GPS stations using a 3D finite element method. It was shown that the reliability of the estimation improved with an increase in displacement due to mining progression. It was also shown that values for Poisson’s ratios of less than 0.10 are reasonable estimates with values for Young’s modulus between about 5?GPa and 10 GPa. The magnitude and direction of the maximum compressive stress in the district surrounding the Torigatayama mine were estimated to be between -6.4 MPa and -4.4 MPa and around N25E respectively.CITATION:Kodama, J, Sasaki, T, Fukuda, D, Kaneko, K, Fujii, Y and Kudo, R, 2014. Com o ensaio de RDI (Índice de Degradação sob Redução), pode-se determinar a geração de finos durante a redução da carga metálica no alto-forno, e com o RI (Índice de Redutibilidade) determina-se a capacidade do sínter em ceder oxigênio para o gás redutor. São ensaios de extrema importância, pois com o RDI é possível medir a degradação do sínter quando submetido a condições redutoras do alto-forno, e com o RI entende-se o grau de redução da carga metálica momentos antes do início de seu processo de amolecimento. Com a instalação deste forno no Laboratório de Redução da CSN, será possível correlacionar os componentes do sínter, e de outras cargas metálicas, avaliando suas influências no produto, e, consequentemente, em suas utilizações no alto-forno.

Para un mayor avance en su producción, las minas de cielo abierto u "open it" de Marcona, utilizan unidades de mayor tamaño en el transporte, puesto que reduce el costo unitario del trabajo. En este aspecto, el objetivo del trabajo describe el uso de máquinas comprendidas para su uso, rendimiento de costo, pala, control de tiempo, tiempo de operaciones y el trabajo con traillas dentro de esta modalidad. etc. Como primer punto, las máquinas cargadoras, las palas mecánicas, etc, incrementan su tamaño constantemente y como tal, las operaciones de transporte cambiaron de uso de ferrocarril a de los camiones con 10,15, 20. 30 y 50 tonelajes por viaje. Posteriormente con el advenimiento de motores diesel, diseño, construcción, perforación y transporte de las máquinas cargadoras, se creó una minería de cielo abierto más económica, flexible y eficiente. En este punto, las operaciones estacionarias, sea con palas o las perforadoras de voladura, utilizaron preferiblemente la energía eléctrica que simplifica la operación y facilita el mantenimiento y las reparaciones. Mientras que las operaciones de perforación, voladura, carguío y acarreo se analiza las características de toneladas rotas por perforación, los cálculos de sobreperforación, los materiales explosivos usados, respectivamente. En cuanto la extracción de palas y volquetes, se evalúa la calidad del disparo, número de voloquetes, capacidad horaria. Finalmente en el trabajo con traillas, se evalúa la influencia del costo de las demoras relativas en las palas y los volquetes, pérdidas de la capacidad potencial de la pala cuando hay insuficiencia de volquetes, asi como las variaciones de la capacidad según la distancia de acarreo.

Among all secondary resources, spent catalyst is one of the most important as it contains valuable metals such as vanadium, nickel, molybdenum, cobalt, and aluminum. Compared with the extraction of metals from minerals, the recovery of valuable metals from spent catalysts has the advantages of a simple process, a short production cycle, lower investment cost, and less environmental impact.

Nas usinas de beneficiamento mineral os gastos com cominuição podem chegar a 80% do total. Diante disso, as indústrias minerais vêm buscando alternativas para a diminuição do consumo energético, dentre as quais destaca-se a utilização de prensas de rolos (HPGR). No presente estudo foram avaliados alguns parâmetros utilizados no dimensionamento de prensas de rolos, tais como capacidade específica, pressão de moagem e energia necessária. Além disso foi avaliado o impacto do aumento da umidade na produtividade do equipamento e determinada a curva de distribuição granulométrica dos produtos e abrasividade do minério. Resultados mostraram que valores de umidade superiores a 5% causam grande prejuízo à capacidade específica do equipamento. Devido à alta abrasividade observada nos ensaios (27 a 48 g/t), percebe-se haver necessidade de estudos mais aprofundados para que se possa aplicar de maneira eficiente a prensa de rolos no material estudado.

"The Scully Mine deposit lies within the group of metasediments that together comprise the rocks of the Labrador Trough. The ore itself still retains the bedding characteristics of the parent rocks and on this basis has been divided into three main members, namely: Upper, Middle and Lower. The Upper and Lower both show many of the bedding characteristics of the cherty taconites of the northern U.S.A.; the Middle member is a coarse-grained friable specularite rock. The ore minerals are hematite (normally present in the specular variety) and magnetite, although the latter rarely occurs in concentrations greater than 20 per cent. Gangue minerals are quartz and the hydrated iron oxides. Manganese oxides also occur as accessory minerals. The outcrop area of the orebody is in excess of 2 square miles, displaying a complex pattern of faulting and folding, which has been formed as a result of at least two orogenic periods."

The problem of estimating pillar capacity in coal mines has motivated development of a variety of empirical equations. Most of these equations have arisen from experience and a very limited set of measurements that have, necessarily, been focused on particular regions or coal fields. Their applicability is often limited to a specific range of pillar sizes. This is of particular concern in the design of large gateroad pillars and small barrier pillars between panels. The result has been a variety of equations and equation coefficients that can calculate load estimates to size pillars. Inclusion of these equations in more sophisticated loading models, such as boundary element methods (e.g. LaModel and MULSIM) has been hampered by absence of a function that describes specific variation of coal strength within the pillar. A singular exception, to our knowledge, is a function corresponding to the Bieniawski pillar strength equation. Because of this, it is the only coal strength criteria inherently available in most boundary element models. This paper presents a general method for deriving local coal strength, as a function of distance from the pillar rib, for an arbitrary pillar strength equation. Integration of this function provides the strength of pillar regions, or cells, needed for boundary element models. The method is demonstrated for the Bieniawski, Maleki and Holland-Gaddy equations. The Maleki and Holland-Gaddy equations contrast strongly with Bieniawski as strengths are extrapolated to large pillars and barriers. This development provides a tool for incorporating any of the proposed empirical equations into a boundary element model, thereby allowing the analyst to choose the most appropriate equation for a particular region, coal seam and/or pillar size.

Copper smelters of various kinds have operated in the Morenci district since 1872, but all have been abandoned with the exception of the present Morenci Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation, which was completed in 1942. During the five-year period starting in 1937, the Morenci ore body was prepared for open pit mining, pilot mill test work was carried out, and a complete reduction works, of which the Smelter is a part, was designed and erected. Actual construction work on the Morenci Smelter was started in the fall of 1940, and warming up of the units began on April 1, 1942. Charging of the reverberatory furnaces commenced on April 18, 1942, and the first anode copper was produced on April 26, 1942. The smelter was originally designed to handle the production of the Morenci Concentrator on a 25,000 ton per day program, but by the time the smelter was in operation, plans were already underway to increase the smelter capacity to handle the production of the concentrator which was being enlarged to 45,000 tons a day capacity as a war-time necessity. This extension to the smelter was completed and the new units were put in operation toward the beginning of 1944. The original smelter consisted of a smelter crushing plant, bedding plant, two direct-smelting reverberatory furnaces with two waste-heat boilers on each furnace, three converters, an anode department, a stack, and all of the usual accessory smelting equipment. The extension consisted of increasing the bedding plant from three to five beds, the reverberatory department from two to four furnaces, and from four to eight waste-heat boilers, and the converter department from three to six converters. A third converter aisle crane was added and additions were made to the flue systems and conveyor systems throughout the smelter; but no change was made in the smelter crushing plant or the anode department, and the same stack was used for all additional Smelter units. A blister casting machine was installed at that time in the south end of the converter aisle to handle excess and emergency production above the capacity of the anode department and in 1947 a converter aisle skull breaker and a lime burning plant were added as the final units for a complete plant. The choice of direct smelting over calcine smelting for the Morenci Smelter was made after careful study by members of the Western organization of Phelps Dodge Corporation and after test runs on direct smelting of Morenci concentrate had been made at the Douglas Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation. The Morenci furnace charge is made up of comparatively high grade concentrate with no ores of smelting grade available and with only flux, a small amount of copper precipitate and the usual amount of smelter secondaries to be smelted with the concentrate. The simplicity of direct smelting for this charge and the large amount of waste-heat steam available from direct smelting operations were factors influencing the decision to adopt direct smelting for Morenci. The design of the Morenci Smelter and the type of units selected followed best experience at the Douglas Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation. A description of the original smelter before operations started was given in an article in the May 1942 issue of Mining and Metallurgy. The purpose of the present article is to describe the enlarged Morenci Smelter, with a discussion of metallurgy and operating practice and to show tabulations of operating and metallurgical results obtained. Because of beginning operations during the early years of World War 11, many problems caused by labor shortage were encountered, but no major difficulties developed in starting the new plant. However, because of labor shortage, full scale Smelter production was not reached until the fall of 1946. Fig 1 shows a general plan of the Morenci Reduction Works. The arrangement of the smelter equipment is shown in Fig 2, a sectional view of the smelter is shown in Fig 3, and the smelter flow sheet is shown in Fig 4. Metallurgy The metallurgy of direct smelting, being more or less fixed by the character of the charge, is not subject to the control available in calcine smelting. Slags may be modified by the addition of suitable fluxes, but the grade of the matte is determined almost entirely by the iron:copper ratio of the concentrate. The direct smelting operation involves distributing the wet concentrate along the sidewalls and in the bath of a reverberatory furnace by means of some suitable feeding device and raising the temperature of the charge so that first the moisture is driven off, then the first-atom sulphur is eliminated, and finally the sulphide portion of the charge melts and runs into the bath, carrying with it the non-sulphide portion which has been partially fluxed to form a suitable slag. The fusion of the non-sulphide portion is completed by contact with the irony converter slag which is regularly being poured into the reverberatory furnace. The smelting rate of the charge is influenced by the mineralogi-cal composition of the sulphide portion of the concentrate and by the composition and amount of the non-sulphide portion including the fluxes added. "In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on the hydrometallurgical processing of molybdenite, with the decline of high-grade and easily handled molybdenum minerals. In this work, a novel method of selective extraction of complex molybdenite concentrate, which is characteristic of high-grade copper ore, has been investigated. The results show that the leaching of chalcopyrite was impacted by the pH of the electrolyte when sodium carbonate and ammonium acid carbonate were added to the electrolyte. The leaching rate of molybdenum reached 99.39%, but chalcopyrite could not be leached at all in 240 min under experimental conditions of liquid-to-solid ratio 25:1, concentration of NaCl 4 mol/L, pH=9, room temperature and agitation speed 400 rpm. The grade of copper in the residue was 21.84%, with a recovery 99.93%. The technology of selective electro-oxidation leaching of molybdenum and recovery of copper from complex molybdenite concentrate is an effective separation method. The diffusion control model can be used to describe the process of leaching of molybdenum. The activation energy of the leaching reaction was found to be approximately 9.21 kJ/mol.IntroductionWorldwide, high-grade and easy-to-handle ore is decreasing, while the proportion of low-grade and complex ore is increasing. Porphyry copper ores with associated low-grade molybdenite are very abundant in China. Molybdenum is a valuable byproduct in the processing of porphyry copper deposits where the molybdenum is present in low quantities in the form of molybdenite (MoS2). In the conventional processing of copper sulfide ores by froth flotation, most of the molybdenite in the ore floats along with the copper sulfides. In this way, a bulk copper-molybdenum concentrate is produced. Afterward, the bulk coppermolybdenum concentrate is treated by differential flotation to obtain a rougher molybdenum concentrate, which requires several successive cleaning steps to produce a final molybdenum concentrate. However, it is widely recognized that flotation alone cannot economically produce a high-grade molybdenite concentrate, i.e., with less than 0.5% Cu. Therefore, in most cases, it is necessary to use a final step of chemical purification of the molybdenite concentrate to reduce the copper content to a level suitable for the market (Antonijevic and Pacovic,1992; Gerhardt et al., 2001; Fu and Zhong, 2003; Reza et al., 2006, Rafael et al., 2013)."

Exports of crude gypsum from Mexico currently comprise about 60% of all domestic shipments, and about 25% of the imported material consumed in the U.S. wallboard industry. However, of growing importance are the domestic markets for calcined gypsum in Mexico including building plasters and wallboard, which account for 55% of the internal demand for natural mined material. This paper will examine the current trends in the production and trade of natural mined gypsum in Mexico and North America and the opportunities and threats that are facing existing and new suppliers in this changing market.

Amostras dos aços inoxidáveis duplex UNS S31803 (duplex padrão) e UNS S32304 (lean duplex) foram investigadas no estado de fornecimento, após laminação a frio com redução de 64% e 62% e recozimento na temperatura de 1055ºC com 20s de encharque. Foram medidas a dureza Vickers e a quantificação das fases, austenita e ferrita, usando o método de contagem por pontos. A textura cristalográfica foi obtida via técnica de EBSD. A textura cristalográfica da fase ferrítica no estado de fornecimento e recozida apresentou as fibras a //DL e q {100} //DN mais intensas, enquanto a fibra g {111} //DN aparece com intensidade menor. Na fase austenítica as principais componentes encontradas com maior intensidade estão na fibra a //DN e na fibra b com menor intensidade.

"INTRODUCTION The largest known deposits of ilmenite and rutile in Virginia are in Amherst and Nelson Counties. Other deposits occur in the State, but their extent is not known. One of the most promising of the latter is the deposit in Roanoke County on the T. M. Bush and the H. L. Hutchins property near Roanoke. A geophysical survey was made of the deposit, followed by core drilling. In April and May 1946, four holes were drilled, totaling 822 linear feet.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. IN the four mills of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. in Peru, some 3000 tons of complex sulphide ores are treated daily, with four kinds of concentrates produced: copper, lead, zinc, and pyrite, each containing values in silver, gold, bismuth, and some other metals. Copper occurs in the various ores as chalcopyrite, enargite, tetrahedrite, tenantite, bournonite, and chalcocite; lead as galena; and zinc as sphalerite and marmatite. Small amounts of silver and tungsten minerals are also present. The gangue consist mainly of shale, quartzite, calcite, rhodochrosite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. In general the values are freed with a relatively coarse grind, about 70 prr cent minus 200 mesh being the finest to which the pulps are ground. In Morococha and Casapalca however. sphalerite particles much finer than this contain inclusions of chalcopyrit r. At Cerro de Pasco the silver and gold are present in all sizes of the ground pyrite.

Estimating the spatial distribution of ore grade is one of the most critical steps to proceed with an investment decision on a deposit. Kriging is the most widely used method to estimate the ore grade, but alternative techniques are being developed. Machine learning algorithms can be used as alternative methods to classical kriging. In this paper, the iron (Fe) grade of a deposit is estimated with the XGBoost algorithm, and the results are compared with kriging estimation results. For the estimations, samples collected from drillholes were used. Due to the different natures of the estimation methods, different steps were taken to perform the estimations. The results show that XGBoost produced higher-range estimates, which is a desired result in ore grade estimation, and the minimum and maximum of the estimates were lower and higher than the kriging estimates, respectively. However, like kriging, the estimation results were smoother than composites, and the variance of the XGBoost estimates was lower than the variance of composites. This means that even though estimation with XGBoost mitigates the smoothing effect, the estimation results suffer from smoothing like kriging.

Este trabalho objetiva o estudo da influência da adição de fibras vegetais de bambu e cana-de-açúcar nas propriedades mecânicas do concreto. Para este trabalho foram confeccionados corpos-de-prova cilíndricos e prismáticos nos quais foram adicionados 2% e 5% em volume das fibras à massa do concreto. Após a cura, conforme NBR 5738 (2003) [1], os mesmos foram testados via ensaios de resistência à compressão conforme NBR 5739 (2007) [2], resistência à tração por compressão diametral, conforme NBR 7222 (2011) [3], resistência à tração na flexão conforme NBR 12142 (2010) [4] e módulo de elasticidade estático, conforme NBR 8522(2008) [5]. Verificou-se após os testes que todos os concretos produzidos atenderam a resistência mínima a compressão de 20 MPa, recomendado pela NBR 6118 (2003) [6] para fins estruturais. Foi observado um aumento da resistência à compressão em relação à mistura padrão. O concreto com adição de fibras de bambu apresentou melhor resistência mecânica em relação ao concreto com adição das fibras de cana-de-açúcar e ao concreto sem adição.

Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than 1/2 in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000.

Computer-aided control of a mining machine places its operator in a safe, remote location, thus reducing health and safety risks. Sensing systems that provide machine position (xy coordinates) and heading (yaw) are extremely useful in aiding remote positioning of mining machines. The US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) developed two sensing systems for position and heading information: a scanning laser system based on the Lasernet sensor and a mechanical position and heading system based on linear-position transducers. The Bureau is also investigating a system from Honeywell, the modular azimuth and positioning system (MAPS), that employs ring-laser gyroscopes (RLGs). This paper presents a brief background and status of these sensing systems as applied to a continuous mining machine (CM). Included are field test results off each system operating in a room-and-pillar research section at a cooperating West Virginia mine.

Exploring for additional ore bodies on the property of the New Idria Quicksilver Mining Co.'s property at Idria, Calif., was done by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. It comprised a study of the geology, mapping, and searching for additional cinnabar by diamond drilling from both surface and underground. Diamond-drill equipment was moved to the project in November 1941, and drilling was completed in.May 1942. Sixteen holes aggregating 2,580 feet were drilled. Diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines developed information regarding ore structures that proved valuable to the operators in planning underground prospecting that led directly to the discovery of high-grade ore.
