The construction of a water treatment plant in Dandenong, Victoria, required detention tanks and a pumping well. The design provided by the Engineer used conventional rectangular cast-in-situ reinforced concrete walls within a sheet piled cofferdam. It was decided to construct the tank and shaft using the diaphragm walling technique as an alternative and, for the shaft in particular, this involved a “circular wall”. Except where cutters are used, joints in diaphragm walls have to be made between colinear panels, with waterproofing provided by dumb-bell water stops held within trapezoidal forms. This means that the circle has to be approximated by a number of straight sides, which in this case was twelve. The requirement was to design the reinforcement for the strange shaped panels. Finite element analysis was used, in the first stage using an axisymmetric model to determine the profile of lateral earth pressures with depth. In the second stage a horizontal slice was modelled, without gravity which normally operates from the top to the bottom of the page. By considering appropriate possible earth pressures at different depths, a range of bending moments was calculated, which was used by the structural engineers to design the rebar. The tanks were successfully constructed, and inclinometers were installed in both the tank and the shaft. Measured deflection profiles show that the design was moderately conservative.

Operating difficulties during 1977 with the Imperial Smelting Furnace operated by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited at their Cockle Creek zinc-lead smelter were found to be caused by premature softening of sinter in the upper shaft of the furnace. This soft- ening was shown to be a consequence of raw materials and operating policies which led to unusually high levels of both lead and silica in a sinter of low basicity. A programme of softening tests and micro-examination of a range of sinters established that premature softening occurred when lead and silica increased to the point where a lead-calcium silicate with a low lime content became the major continuous phase in the sinter. This information was used to define a range of compositions which kept the softening temperature acceptably high for furnace operations.

Aços bifásicos ou Dual Phase são caracterizados por uma microestrutura ferrítico- martensítica, a qual consiste em uma matriz de ferrita equiaxial com 10 a 20% de martensita dispersa na forma de ilhas. Neste trabalho, utilizaram-se amostras de aço baixo C, micro adição de Nb e Mo, na condição laminada a frio (BFH). As simulações físicas nesse material, em escala laboratorial, foram conduzidas com o objetivo de avaliar a evolução microestrutural após redução de espessura através de laminação a frio e recozimento intercrítico com temperatura de encharque de 800 °C e permanência por 180 segundos na temperatura máxima, seguido de resfriamento sob duas proposições: em água (criticar a fração de austenita formado no encharque em função do potencial para recristalização da ferrita) e ao ar (inferir na formação de ferrita epitaxial e subsequentes transformações bainítica e/ou martensítica no decurso do resfriamento). Utilizando o auxílio da microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), observaram-se que para obtenção da microestrutura característica de um aço DP seria necessário o ajuste dos parâmetros de recozimento em função do percentual de redução na laminação a frio, ou seja, aumentando o percentual de redução do material é necessária a diminuição da temperatura ou do tempo de encharque para que sejam obtidos resultados adequados as características de um aço DP.

Field testing of GPS mining applications has confirmed the technical and operational viability of GPS for precise, centimeter-level positioning in harsh taconite environments. GPS hardware has provided consistent availability exceeding 90%, with precision in certain applications of ± 0.07 foot at 95% confidence levels. Despite these technical successes though, challenges persist in achieving effective GPS integration. These challenges include the acceptance of new job tasks by mine personnel, the capacity of typical mine data communications infrastructure and the need to design GPS interfaces for new mining equipment.

Iron Road Limited (Iron Road) is currently evaluating the feasibility of producing 21.5 Mt/a of high-grade (>66 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 3.7 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate can be produced via a conventional grind and low-intensity magnetic separation flow sheet. Due to the comparatively coarse magnetite liberation size (106 µm), consideration was given to enhancing both the grind economics and coarser product sizing via gravity separation.This paper outlines the test work, flow sheet design and engineering design of a gravity beneficiation circuit (GBC) conducted by Mineral Technologies for Iron Road. The resulting circuit optimisation necessitated mass balance simulation by Iron Road’s SysCAD model to quantify the resulting changes in mill recirculation load. This included the determination of project-critical grinding power and energy requirements with and without the GBC installed into the primary ball mill classification circuit. The outcome of this work was the design of a GBC, including spirals and up-current classification, which led to a substantial reduction (33 per cent) in ball mill recirculating load and power requirements, together with a favourable coarsening of final product size due to the relatively coarser gravity concentrate. This has led to a significant reduction in project design capital and operating costs. A further benefit of this approach is increased recovery of (paramagnetic) hematite and lesser titano-hematite via gravity separation compared to an all-magnetic separation approach.CITATION:Hunt, A G, Showers, G J and Botman, P, 2015. With the advancement of industrial science and technology, more and more catalysts are used. The spent catalysts produced are solid waste products, which cause environmental pollution if they are not treated. At the same time, the spent catalysts contain some precious metals such as platinum in concentrations that are often higher than in their ore resources. Therefore, the recovery of valuable metals in spent catalysts is a hot research topic at present. However, due to the complex structure of the spent catalysts, dealing with them is a lengthy process. The first step of recovery, enrichment of the spent catalyst, becomes particularly important. In this paper, a pressure solution method is investigated for this purpose, in which the alumina carrier is dissolved and platinum is enriched in the leaching residue.

The main challenges in most low grade iron ore deposits are finding the optimum flowsheet for beneficiation to achieve a final concentrate from both technical and economic viewpoints. Dry preconcentration techniques are being used to assist in reducing the amount of ROM feed to the plant. In this paper the benefits of utilising a dry cobbing magnetic separation technique for upgrading the product of HPGR in a closed circuit with dry screen 4 and 1.4 mm by performing a pilot scale test work was investigated. The experimental test work was done on two sample types of Yogi BIF magnetite iron ore located in Western Australia. Prior to magnetic separation studies, detailed characterisation of the feed materials including physical, chemical, mineralogical and magnetic properties were carried out. Furthermore, the effects of process parameters: drum rotation speed (1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 m/s), magnetic field intensity (1100 and 3800 gauss) and feed size (minus 4 and 1.4 mm) were investigated. The results revealed that sample type1 with 33.90% Fe could be upgraded to 41.51% Fe by using a stage of 1100 gauss dry magnetic separator with 69.12% weight recovery and 84.36% Fe recovery at a size of 4 mm. Also for sample type2, it is possible to increase Fe grade from 29.84% to above 36.68% with 75.58% weight recovery and 90.32% Fe recovery by applying one stage of 1100 gauss dry magnetic separator to a 4 mm size sample. The blasting process involves a complex interaction of a delayed sequence of moving sources of seismic energy which produce nonlinear behaviour near the blast holes. A deterministic description of this nonlinear behaviour represents a formidable problem. The modelling of blast vibrations remote from the blast source may use some of the primary features of the blast design such as charge type, charge weight and initiation sequence. Such modelling of blast vibrations usually assumes linear behaviour remote from the blast holes. Site specific charge weight scaling laws may be used to predict the blast vibration levels with relatively poor accuracy. An important ingredient which is missing from charge weight scaling laws is the seismic source wavelet emanating from each blast hole. The present paper considers some approaches which may be used to determine a suitable source wavelet. The wavelets are suitable for use in the region where linearity may be assumed. In that region, it is possible to model the attenuation and scattering of the seismic wave as it propagates from the blast source to the measurement location.

Control of the dust produced by continuous mining machines in coal mines is conventionally attained by water sprays from fixed nozzles mounted on the frame of the machine behind the cutting head. In the tests conducted under this contract a so-called "wet-head" machine was used, where the spray nozzles were mounted on the rotating head itself, close to the coal-cutting bits. The tests were conducted at the Robena Mine of U.S. Steel Corporation, using Lee-Norse machines. Operating the wet-head machine and a conventional spray machine in turns in the same section, it was found that the wet-head produced approximately 25 percent less respirable dust and 60 percent less total airborne dust than the conventional spray machine. The wet-head also greatly improved the visibility of the cutting bits from the machine operator's position. Several difficulties had to be overcome before any meaningful tests could be conducted, including excessive pressure drops in the piping system and plugging of the nozzles from internal water contamination. The major obstacle, however, was the rotating water seals on the wet-head, which leaked excessively after only a few hours of operation. Only after several changes and plant and laboratory tests was a design found which permitted conducting the underground tests without appreciable water leakage.

O coque é produzido a partir de misturas, de carvões minerais com diferentes propriedades, formuladas para atender os requisitos operacionais do processo de coqueificação e a garantir a qualidade do ferro-gusa que será produzido nos altos-fornos. Além disso, está mistura deve ter o menor custo possível uma vez que a maior parte do carvão metalúrgico utilizado no Brasil é importado, representando assim uma grande parcela do custo do aço. O grande desafio do setor é obter misturas de carvões que atendam a coqueria e produzam coque com alta qualidade e baixo custo. Para tanto, é necessário uma otimização de vários processos, desde a compra e transporte do carvão até sua estocagem, formação das misturas e abastecimento da coqueria. Com isto, este trabalho vem com o objetivo de sugerir uma otimização e planejamento da mistura de carvão para a coqueria com a utilização de rejeitos plásticos de menor valor agregado na mistura que possibilitem a produção de coque com menor custo e com a qualidade exigida no processo de fabricação de aço.

Researchers associated with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), are investigating injuries (fatal and nonfatal) attributed to water well drillers during well drilling activities. Injury data, obtained from various sources, suggest that many water well drillers are experiencing unnecessarily high insurance premiums and very avoidable citations or violations from the direct result of accidents, injuries, and fatalities occurring throughout the water well drilling industry. Expensive insurance premiums and unnecessary citations are the direct result of poor health and safety practices. Visits to numerous water well drilling sites were conducted by NIOSH personnel to characterize and identify the injury data collected and to provide inexpensive strategies to prevent, minimize, and eliminate safety and health issues associated with water well drilling activities.

Seven mines with important production records in the Coeur d'Alene lie adjacent to the Gem stocks —the Frisco (Gem), Hercules, Interstate, Rex (Sixteen to One), Success (Granite), Sunset, and Tamarack. Old records are incomplete, but available data given in Table I show these mines have produced 10.550,721 tons of ore containing more than 50 million oz of silver, more than 1.5 billion lb of lead, and about 1 billion lb of zinc (approximately 1.25 million tons of lead and zinc combined). Average ore grade is 4.8 oz of silver per ton, 7.2 pct Pb, and 4.6 pct Zn. This impressive production represents about 12 pct of the District's yield. At present metal prices, with modern beneficiation, the gross value would be more than $400 million. THE GEM STOCKS The Gem stocks, considered to be outliers of the Idaho batholith of Late Cretaceous age, are located in the northern half of the Mullan quadrangle, and extend from the town of Gem, Idaho, along a strike of N30°E for a distance of approximately five miles. They occur as two major masses of monzonitic rocks commonly referred to as the North stock, which covers an area of 1.1 sq miles, and the South stock, which covers 2.6 sq miles. The areal pattern is roughly club-shaped, the North stock representing the handle and the South stock the head of the club. Two and a half miles west and five miles northeast are two groups of smaller stocks, isolated from the main masses but of the same general rock type. This discussion is limited for the most part to the North and South stocks. At the north end, where the intrusion is about 3200 ft wide, the walls are about parallel and dip very steeply west. At the south end, where the mass is about 7000 ft wide at surface, the walls dip away from each other at moderately steep angles. An aeromagnetic survey' detects and outlines with surprising accuracy the two main stocks. as illustrated on the magnetic contour map (Fig. 2). Of particular interest is the location and shape of the magnetic anomaly representing the South stock. The anomaly is centered over the south end of the outcrop, and a westerly extension joins it with a smaller anomaly over the Dago Peak stocks. The latter anomaly, likewise, is located over the south end of the isolated stocks. This pattern suggests the intrusion has greater extent at depth to the south and west. Though correlation between the Dago Peak stocks and the larger masses is suggested, the controversial aspects of the Dobson Pass fault, which separates the two areas, casts doubt on a correlation. Topographically the monzonite stocks are ignored by the drainage pattern indicating these rocks, and the invaded rocks of the Lower Belt Series react similarly to erosion. The drainage patterns of Nine Mile and Canyon creeks cut indiscriminately across the monzonite-Belt contact, resulting in both valleys and ridges in the southern end of the intrusion. Nine Mile Creek traverses diagonally the entire five-mile length of the stocks. The monzonite rocks of the intrusion are referred to locally as granite, but granite is rare and the rocks comprise a wide variety of types. Their characteristics, described in detail by F. L. A pelotização é o método de aglomeração de minério que oferece o melhor custo benefício. No processo, é necessária a adição de um aglomerante para conseguir as propriedades desejadas. Entre estes, o cimento é um dos destaques pela facilidade e custo. A adição de pozolânicos no concreto na construção civil para o aumento da resistência é de longa data. Neste trabalho, se estuda o efeito da adição de 1% de SiO2 ou bentonita na mistura das pelotas autorredutoras. Realizam-se ensaios de compressão a frio, compressão após tratamento térmico 950°C, Teste de abrasão a quente, teste de quedas, além de difração de raios-X. Como resultados obteve-se um incremento da resistência a compressão a frio e a abrasão a quente com a adição da bentonita, porém com ambos pozolânicos tem-se uma perda de 50% na resistência a compressão após tratamento térmico a 950°C.

Henderson Mine has been transporting molybdenum ore using a rail haulage system for the past 21 years. Due to the age of this system, limited performance, and obsolescence, a capital investment decision was imminent. Henderson used this opportunity to evaluate other transportation methods and continuously improve their mining practices. These efforts resulted in a new mine plan for Henderson, which ensures that Henderson will continue to supply high quality molybdenum into the 21st century. This paper will discuss the dramatic changes taking place at the Henderson Mine as a new production level is mined. These changes include the installation of an underground crushing, conveying, and truck haulage system, as well as increasing the scale of the panel caving process. Each of these topics will be discussed, as will their rock mechanics and material flow implications.

O inchamento é um grande problema durante a redução de pelotas de minério de ferro. Várias mudanças podem ser feitas nas pelotas para minimizá-lo. Conforme o sínter utilizado se torna cada vez mais básico, pelotas mais ácidas são desejadas. A adição de MgO, assim como a modificação da basicidade binárias das pelotas pela adição de CaO são soluções que têm sido apontadas. Dessa forma, este trabalho estudou os efeitos do MgO a da modificação da basicidade binária nas seguintes propriedades de pelotas: compressão a frio, porosidade e índice de inchamento. Foram preparadas pelotas com até 5% de MgO e com basicidades entre 0,67 e 1,5. O aumento do teor de MgO causou aumento de porosidade e queda de resistência. A basicidade diminuiu a porosidade e causou aumento de resistência nas pelotas de basicidade 1,0. Tanto o aumento de basicidade quanto a adição de MgO diminuíram o inchamento.

The diverse nature of inadvertent mine fires does not lend them to general treatment. But evolving from the unfortunate fires over past years is a simple principle in dealing with all fires to bring combustion under control. Control, in brief, means that the products of combustion, themselves possibly still with fuel values, are not revitalised by addition of fresh air. There are problems with fire- fighting, especially with water, as this may lead to production of CO and H2. Panel ventilation upstream of the fire must be controlled to direct all air over the fire. Some advantages in fire fighting are found by the use of "sails". Early diagnosis of fires and early treatment are essential for safety of personnel and safeguarding and recovery of property. Preparedness extends to up to date documentation, but first hand knowledge also is invaluable to the diverse personnel gathered to fight a fire, and in the decision making Involved.
